35.
The Cincinnati Reds battled early and often in their series opener in St. Louis against the Cardinals, eventually plating big runs in the Top of the 9th to run away with an 11-6 victory.

 36.
 37.
Sal Stewart got the scoring going with a mammoth solo homer off the facade of the second deck in the Top of the 2nd, and he legged out an infield single in the Top of the 9th to give the Reds an 8-6 lead and vital insurance run at the time. Of course, Tyler Stephenson followed Stewart’s infield single with a bases-clearing double to put the Reds ahead by what became the final score, putting a game on ice at that juncture that had been a see-saw affair for two hours prior.

 38.
 39.

 40.

Sal Stewart is on an absolute heater to start his big league career 🔥

MLB's No. 30 prospect (@Reds) raises his OPS to .919 after a three-hit game — including a 112.6 mph homer off the second deck: pic.twitter.com/Tgl1OV6oDZ
— MLB Pipeline (@MLBPipeline) September 16, 2025

 41.

 42.
 43.
Reds starter Zack Littell was primarily responsible for the early see-saw, as he retired 12 straight Cardinals hitters at one point before St. Louis managed to punch their way ahead in the Bottom of the 6th. He was dominant at times, vulnerable at times, and that’s pretty much the scouting report for him that we’ve come to know in his month and a half as a member of the Reds.

 44.
 45.
The win brought Cincinnati back to .500 at 75-75, and drew them back to within 2 games of the final National League Wild Card spot with the New York Mets idle on Monday. Meanwhile, the Arizona Diamondbacks thumped the San Francisco Giants on Monday night to move to 76-75, said loss dropping the Giants to an indentical 75-75 record with Cincinnati heading into the final week and a half of the 2025 regular season.

 46.
 47.
As for the totality of the Reds on the evening, it was a refreshing reminder that there is offensive talent on this squad even if we’ve failed to see it nearly as often as we’d like down the stretch. Elly De La Cruz, who was finally dropped from the #3 spot in the lineup after struggling with the bat for months, chipped in with a double and a pair of walks in something of a get-right game, but the early returns of Sal Stewart in the big league lineup are that he’s a cog around which they need to build going forward.

 48.
 49.
The 21 year old bashed his 4th homer of his brief career as part of a 3-hit night, scoring thrice and driving in a pair while looking anything but overmatched at the dish. The ripple effects of what he’s already capable of doing at the plate against Major League starters will – or should – dictate what Nick Krall and Co. do to rectify their offense this winter, as Sal has staked an immediate claim to a corner infield position on this roster going forward.

 50.
 51.
Let’s just hope he can spearhead a two-week miracle for this Reds club to finish the 2025 campaign with aplomb.

 125.
Miracle.

 126.
 127.
Fresh off being swept at the hands of the citiless A’s, the Cincinnati Reds are beyond having their backs up against the wall in the race to make the National League playoffs. They are firmly in a position where they need an absolute miracle for that to happen.

 128.
 129.
They’re 2.5 games back of a New York Mets club that already gave them an 8-game losing streak on which to build momentum (which the Reds did not seize). They’re now behind both the San Francisco Giants and Arizona Diamondbacks in the jockeying Wild Card spots, closer in the standings to the St. Louis Cardinal (who are a meager 73-77) than they are to a team in a current playoff position.

 130.
 131.
The Reds are under .500, and yet we’re still trying to find relevance here with 13 games remaining. And, of course, they’re about to face their nemesis – those very Cardinals – on the road in St. Louis when the home team in the series has the chance to spoil absolutely every last inch of hope the Reds still have.

 132.
 133.
St. Louis even activated Nolan Arenado just in time for the series opener on Monday night, too.

 134.
 135.
Cincinnati will be sending Zack Littell to the mound again, while the Cardinals will counter with Matthew Liberatore. That’s a lefty on the bump for the Cardinals, something that’s haunted the Cincinnati offense for years now, though the hope is that Sal Stewart (who’s in the lineup at 3B) can help mitigate that problem going forward.

 136.
 137.
Also, manager Terry Francona finally, mercifully dropped Elly De La Cruz in the batting order after he’d struggled terribly for the better part of three months. Elly’s hitting 7th tonight, while Miguel Andujar will bat 3rd and DH.

 138.
 139.
First pitch in St. Louis is set for 7:45 PM ET in what may well end up the final relevant game of Cincinnati’s season should it once again not go their way.

 164.
 165.
In 6 starts, he pitched to a tidy 1.17 ERA (381 ERA+), efforts that were good enough to be valued by Baseball Reference at 1.9 bWAR. A two-win pace across just 6 GS extrapolated across a typically healthy ~30 start season for a pitcher would be, well, extraordinary. All that in his first actual season of pitching as a professional.

 166.
 167.
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of noise in all of the above statements.

 168.
 169.
For one, Lowder’s peripherals weren’t rosy at all despite the surface excellence. He managed just a 22/14 K/BB ratio during those 30.2 IP, pitched his way into (and out of) jams in most every outing, and leaned hard on his bullpen – Tony Santillan, in particular – to strand runners he’d left on-base. More importantly, though, is that we’re here at the end of the 2025 season and I’m talking only about the way he debuted at the end of 2024, since that’s unfortunately the most recent body of work we’ve got to go on with Lowder.

 170.
 171.
He’s been fighting injury for the duration of the 2025 season. Injuries, rather, with first a worrisome forearm injury and later a left oblique injury having derailed any chance of him proving that he could truly make it at the big league level in a larger sample, and as of this weekend he’d not appeared anywhere since 1.1 iffy innings with AAA Louisville in mid-May. But with the Reds pitching staff looking haggard and just under two weeks remaining for them to find a way to sneak into the playoffs, it’s hard not to get excited about Lowder making his return to the AAA mound with some decent results on Saturday.

 172.
 173.
 174.
 175.
Lowder threw 25 strikes among the 34 overall pitches he threw for the Bats across 2.0 IP, striking out a pair while walking none. He did allow a run on a pair of hits, but as the above video reveals he also had both his slider and change-up working – as well as his patented ability to locate both inside and away.

 176.
 177.
It’s awfully encouraging to see given how much time he missed due to both injuries, but the timing of it hopefully means he can sneak his way back onto the Reds roster for at least an appearance or two out of the bullpen before the season’s totally over. Heck, it may even be the case that he can make it back for a decent-leverage appearance in a game that actually means something should the Reds find a miracle run of form across their final four regular season series amid this farfetched playoff chase.

 178.
 179.
At worst, he has at least put himself back in a scenario where he’ll enter the offseason free from rehab and can build up to the 2026 season in normal fashion. That’ll be vital for him for the obvious reasons, but also because the Reds have (on paper) the kind of glut of starting pitching options that will make them the envy of the rest of baseball, and that envy is often the precise right time for a front office to strike and make some trades.

 180.
 181.
Seriously, the staff options heading into 2026 are pretty absurd:

 244.
 245.
Surely the Cincinnati starting rotation wouldn’t suffer from those same dimensions, no. That was the one infallible hallmark of this particular club, that their starters would perpetually find ways to deke short porches and slice and dice their way through any lineup in any park – in any conditions.

 246.
 247.
That didn’t happen in Sacramento this weekend, sadly. On Sunday, the Reds once again jumped to a meager lead only for one of their absolute best starters to give it right back, with A’s sluggers smashing and bashing them to bits in the AAA ballpark they’re playing in en route to Las Vegas.

 249.
This time, it was Nick Lodolo getting slugged, as he yielded a trio of dingers and 5 ER in 5.1 IP. That came on the heels of Hunter Greene getting bonked around on Saturday, and while the Cincinnati bats did manage to hit a trio of balls over the walls in the park themselves, it was the artists former known as Oakland who did so with many more runners on base and at much more opportune times.

 250. <img src="https://platform.redreporter.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/132/2025/08/gettyimages-1247174547.jpg?quality=90&strip=all&crop=0,0.0029286007145828,100,99.994142798571" alt="" title="" data-has-syndication-rights="1" data-caption="PHOENIX, AZ - FEBRUARY 15: Nick Krall, General Manager of the Cincinnati Reds, speaks to the media during the Spring Training Cactus League Media Day at Arizona Biltmore on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 in Phoenix, Arizona. 251.
Sunday’s loss rendered the Reds swept, the second such time that’s happened of late after their remarkable (surprising?) run of sweepless series to begin the 2025 campaign. It also sunk them to a sub-.500 record for the season at 74-75, their quest to sneak into the playoffs also dented as they slipped to 2.5 games back of the final National League Wild Card spot.

 252.
 253.
The loss today stings, obviously. The losses all series, though, belie something much more consequential at this juncture of the season: an utter and distinct lack of momentum, and an even more subdued identity itself.

 254.
 255.
What is this Reds team right now? It’s not a platoon offense that puts fear in opponents hearts in certain matchups, that’s for sure. The starter pitching just struggled against a club that’s been out of the playoff race for weeks already, and its bullpen was positively shelled throughout. They don’t sock homers at all, and they’ve largely eschewed running the bases in a manner that defined them throughout the David Bell years.

 256.
 257.
The quote the inimitable Office Space, it’s hard not to ask the collective Reds the question of what would you say…you do here?

 258.
 259.
The loss surely meant a brutally austere flight back across the country to Cincinnati on Sunday evening, and the Reds will welcome the St. Louis Cardinals to Great American Ball Park to begin play in a three-game series on Monday evening. It’s that, four against the Chicago Cubs, and a trio against the Pittsburgh Pirates to wrap the season’s home slate at GABP before they head to Milwaukee for a three-game set to finish the regular season.

 260.
 261.
Whether or not this team has the ability to reinvent itself in time to make an epic push for a playoff spot remains to be seen, but the A’s sure seemed to expose that inability in spades all weekend long in Sacramento.

 329.
The Cincinnati Reds did what they’ve done often of late in the darkness of Friday night – jumped out to an early, albeit meager lead in Sacramento against the A’s.

 330.
 331.
Will Benson’s 2-run dinger off the wall beyond the centerfield wall was brilliant and beautiful, though in hindsight it seemed to only set the yardage for how hard you’d need to hit a baseball to have it clear the batter’s eye altogether.

 332.
 333.
The A’s rallied off Cincinnati ace Hunter Greene, pushing the Reds once again to their bullpen earlier than manager Terry Francona would have ever wanted. Nick Martinez, who the Reds gave a Qualifying Offer to this offseason which he accepted for some $21.05 million, then came on in a bulk relief role, limiting the A’s to just a lone run over 2.2 IP while the bats clawed their way back – Tyler Stephenson, in particular, came up large with a 3-run shot over the right field wall that put the Reds right back in the thick of the conversation.

 334.
 335.
When Francona turned to the arms who’ve done so much of the heavy lifting at the back end of the bullpen, though, things immediately went to crap.

 336.
 337.
They’re overworked. That’s been readily evident since long before this particular occassion. Still, as Graham Ashcraft saw all of his offereing pelted around the diamond for hits and Scott Barlow couldn’t find the strike zone to save his life, it became clear that the Reds were about to find their fortunes dashed once again by the rebuilding A’s in one of the biggest spots of their season.

 338.
 339.
Nick Kurtz, who is going to win the American League Rookie of the Year Award this year, was taken 4th overall in last summer’s MLB Draft out of Wake Forest, just two picks after the Cincinnati Reds selected pitcher Chase Burns out of Wake Forest, too. It represented something of a dichotomy of approaches between the two clubs – the Reds jumping to take another talented pitcher as they’ve done so often with their high picks during their rebuild, while the A’s took a mostly positionless bat who could sock the hell out of the ball.

 340.
 341.
Both methodologies have their valid points. Oakland’s, Sacramento’s, Vegas’s had the upper hand on Friday, however, as precisely one day after Burns pitched some medium-leverage relief innings after an arm scare every pitcher on the planet will face, Kurtz sent a ball 493 feet into the stratosphere to both win a game and seal a highlight memory to everyone who ever had the chance to witness it.

 342.
 343.
Kurtz’s homer – a grand slam, naturally – cleared the batter’s eye some 70 feet further than Benson’s homer earlier in the game and put the game completely on ice. It gave the A’s an insurmountable 11-5 lead and sunk the wherewithal of every Reds player in the stadium to a new low.

 344.
 345.
It also sunk the Reds right back to baseball purgatory – right at the .500 mark for the season.

 346.
 347.
Yeah, they’re still ‘close to a playoff spot’ and ‘not mathematically eliminated’ with barely two weeks of the season remaining. But they’re also a whiff away from having lost more games than they’ve won, an indicator far more important to their overall progress than potentially managing to sneak into the expanded postseason as the game’s 14th best team.

 348.
 349.
Last night burned, and burned bad. Their hopes were dashed in the most epic possible way – by a player they don’t have doing something nobody else on their own roster could do if they tried right now, a clear example of being bested completely by something they can’t even replicate at their best.

 350.
 351.
Maybe they’ll pick themselves up off the mat again, as they’ve done a couple times already this season when things looked bleak. This time, though, it just felt different.

 419.
Chase Burns returned to the mound in Sacramento on Friday night, and that’s the positive takeaway from this game that you should file away into your long-term Cincinnati Reds planning folder.

 420.
 421.
The rookie fireballer had been sidelined for over a month with a flexor strain in his prized right throwing arm, but returned in a relief role for Terry Francona’s club on Friday in their series opener against the roving A’s of Las Vegas-Oakland-Sacramento. Unfortunately, I’m beginning this recap of a vital game in a playoff push with details of a reliever instead of, y’know, all the other things that would otherwise be important because the rest of the Reds didn’t exactly do much of anything worthwhile on the day.

 422.
 423.
The A’s swatted a trio of solo homers on the day – two off Reds starter Brady Singer, and one eventually off of Burns himself – while the Reds stranded an entire fleet of runners in a brutal 3-0 series opening loss late Friday night. Burns’surrendered homer came in his second inning of work after he looked positive electric in a 13-pitch first inning of work, his velocity once again touching triple digits while he worked in his patented devastating slider, to boot.

 424.
 425.
That came on the heels of another otherwise rock-solid outing from Singer, who fired 6.0 IP of 2 ER ball – both earnies coming via solo long-balls courtesy of the A’s.

 426.
 427.
The small-ball Reds, meanwhile, had getting to first base firmly in their wheelhouse on the evening. Leadoff man TJ Friedl was on four times – twice via walk, once via HBP, and once via a single – and the team put their leadoff man in damn near every single inning without being able to get them around to score. The Reds coaxed five walks on the game to go with their six hits – including a leadoff Will Benson triple thanks to A’s outfielder JJ Bleday losing the ball in the lights – yet still couldn’t figure out how to get any of those runners around to score.

 428.
 429.
Not even after A’s starter JT Ginn was forced out due to injury in the Top of the 5th could they figure things out, what with the A’s bullpen entering play sporting a bottom-five ERA and the second-highest walk rate among all relief units league-wide.

 430.
 431.
The frustrating aspect of it all is that the New York Mets, who the Reds are chasing in the National League Wild Card chase, lost again on Friday, meaning a win yesterday could have pushed the Reds to within a half-game of a playoff spot. Instead, the Reds squandered the opportunity while their Wild Card chasing rivals from San Francisco delivered an epic walk-off grand slam over their own rivals the Los Angeles Dodgers to instead move ahead of Cincinnati in the race.

 432.

 433.
The Reds now find themselves again on the mat as they’ve waited until the final two weeks of the season to finally push down on the gas. Hopefully, they won’t squander any more opportunities offensively while in Sacramento, one of the most offensive friendly environments they could possibly ask for.
