4. 5 Great Benefits for Children Learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

 5.

 6. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, commonly referred to as BJJ, is a great activity for children of all ages. When taught to children, BJJ instructors focus on creating an environment of fun learning and practical skills. Boys love it because it focuses their physical energy into productive outlets. Girls love it because it teaches them self-reliance and confidence. BJJ is great for children from as young as five years old all the way into adulthood.

 7.

 8. There are numerous benefits for your children with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, such as:

 9.

 10.

 11.

 12. #1 - Fitness

 13.

 14. Childhood obesity is a growing problem in Australia. Children that are overweight are setting health patterns that will shape their adult life. Studies have shown that childhood obesity is associated with a number of physical, psychological, and social consequences. The number of overweight children in Australia has tripled in the last twenty years. Experts call this trend an epidemic.

 15.

 16. BJJ is a great fat burning exercise that will quickly show results. Children that have routine exercise have a stronger self-image, focus better in school, and are far less likely to experience obesity-related ailments, such as diabetes.

 17.

 18.

 19.

 20. #2 – Self-Confidence

 21.

 22. Sports is a very impactful way to teach your child self-confidence. The skills that your child will learn on the mat directly translate to the skills they will need as an adult. BJJ is taught to a group of students and in this way we form a team to support and encourage one another. Grappling, though, is ultimately an individual sport. Teaching your child how to deal with pressure and overcome adversity will benefit them their entire life.

 23.

 24. The impact of self-confidence carries over to academic performance, the types of friendships formed, and your child’s decision-making.

 25.

 26.

 27.

 28. #3 – Bully Proof

 29.

 30. Bullying is unfortunately a widespread phenomenon throughout Australia. It ranges to face to face bullying like in the schoolyard to cyber-bulling through text messages and Facebook. The impact of bullying on children cannot be overstated. It can stunt emotional and intellectual growth as well as lead to feelings of depression and despair.

 31.

 32. Martial arts is a great way to teach your child how to cope with bullying. All of our classes focus on dealing with bullies in a safe and effective way. The best way to focus on bullying is to be solution focused and to make your child bully proof.

 33.

 34.

 35.

 36. #3 – Discipline

 37.

 38. Achieving success in any sport, and in particular Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, takes dedication and patience. Because BJJ is fun and engaging, most children won’t even realize that they are fostering core values that will serve them throughout their life. Discipline allows your child to understand the pay-off for hard work and the commitment it takes to reach goals.

 39.

 40. BJJ instills in each practitioner a sense of “never give up”. Every failure is a chance to learn and improve and every victory is a celebration of the hard work it took to reach that milestone.

 41.

 42.

 43.

 44. #5 – Control

 45.

 46. If your child ever gets in a situation where they are physically threatened or bullied, BJJ is the safest option not only to protect your child, but also to protect the other child. Other forms of martial arts focus on striking with fists or kicks. BJJ is known as the gentle art, because it involves no striking or inflicting injury.

 47.

 48. Children in BJJ classes are taught to bring their opponent to the ground and maintain a controlling position. This allows your child to remain safe without having to hurt their aggressor while an authority figure arrives, such as a teacher, or until the other child calms down.

 49.

 50.

 59. Life Insurance of a Different Kind

 60.

 61.

 62.

 63. It is estimate that 56% of all Australians have life insurance. Like all types of insurance, this money is for the big ‘what if’. For home insurance, it’s what if something happens to my home like a storm or a fire. For health insurance, it’s what if I get sick. There’s all types insurances to cover every aspect of your life – travel insurance, income protection, car insurance, and more.

 64.

 65. Martial arts training is very much like life insurance. Ignore all of the other benefits for a moment, such as the health, confidence, and friendships, and just focus on what impact it could have on you or your loved ones in that What If moment.

 66.

 67. Sure, none of us expect it to happen. None of us want it to happen, but sometimes there are moments where you must act or suffer dire consequences. Life insurance is about what happens after you die. Martial arts is about what happens to keep you alive.

 68.

 69.

 70.

 71. Cheltenham, England August 2014

 72.

 73. Around 2AM in the morning, a woman was attacked and punched by a male assailant. He wrestled her to the ground with the intent of perpetrating a sexual assault. The most terrifying position for a woman is having a rapist between her legs.

 74.

 75. This woman, who remains unnamed for her own privacy, trained Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and kick boxing for two years. Having a person between the legs on the ground, known as the guard, is a position of strength. This woman, alone and severely out-muscled, used her training to render the attacker unconscious with a triangle choke.

 76.

 77. Without this training, she surely would have been raped and possibly even murdered.

 78.

 79.

 80.

 81. Paris, France August 2015

 82.

 83. A suicidal terrorist bordered a passenger train. On his person, he carried an assault rifle, a pistol, a knife, a petrol bomb, and over 270 rounds of ammunition. He bordered the train with the aim to kill as many people as possible.

 84.

 85. The first person that he encountered was Spencer Stone. Stone, a tourist and off-duty US airmen, had ‘life insurance’. He had achieved the rank of blue belt in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu while stationed in Portugal. One of the fundamental aspects to BJJ is training self-defense for real life situations.

 86.

 87. Together with the aid of a few other passengers, Stone used his training to grapple the attacker, disarm him, and subdue him with a rear naked choke. Despite all of the weapons carried by the terrorist, not a single person was killed.

 88.

 89.

 90.

 91. Morton, Illinois USA October 2015

 92.

 93. While volunteering to teach children chess at a public library, 75-year old retiree James Vernon saw a knife wielding man enter the library. The young man, facing serious court charges, was determined to kill as many children as possible before taking his own life. The library had sixteen children and their mothers, terrified beyond reason.

 94.

 95. Vernon, a US Army veteran, had basic defense training from his time in the service that included a knife disarm. The elderly man confronted the attacker, flipped him onto a table with a hip throw and disarmed him. None of the women or the children were harmed. The attacker was taken into custody.

 96.

 97. Fifty years had passed since Vernon had his self-defense training, but when he needed it most it all came back. His training helped him overcome a stronger, younger, armed opponent.

 98.

 99.

 100.

 101. Martial Arts Saves Lives

 102.

 103. These stories are just a few from around the world where normal people with extraordinary skills save their own lives and the lives of others. Don’t take the risk. If you do find yourself in a dangerous situation where you or those around you are in a life-threatening situation, martial arts training is the best form of insurance you can have.

 104.

 110. Click here to read it.
111.
112. As I read the article it struck me how similar this guy had found learning a language to learning BJJ. So with that in mind I decided to write a BJJ version based on those 10 tips and tricks.
113.
114. 1. Know why you're doing it.
115. Know why you're doing BJJ. To have longevity in a difficult pursuit such as BJJ or any activity for that matter, you need to set goals. Without goals it can be difficult to stay motivated so decide what it is that you want to gain from training
116.
117. 2. Dive in.
118. Learn as much as you can by attending class and open mat sessions regularly as well as drilling and pressure testing techniques that you are developing. This will give your development consistent growth and improvement. Another handy tool is to have a training diary to keep notes, be sure to write down each technique you learn, developments you've gained and problems areas you need to address.
119.
120. 3. Find a partner.
121. Find someone to train with regularly. Have a training buddy that you can try new techniques with, discuss what each of you have learnt and also work on problems you both encounter. A training buddy can be great source of support when you're going through a rough patch. They can help to keep you motivated and plough through when you may be feeling less than enthusiastic about your progress. Your training buddy can even provide a little bit of competition so both of you try to keep up with each others progress. Just ensure that training remains positive and mutually beneficial.
122.
123. 4. Keep it relevant.
124. Train with as many different people as possible. This will help test your game and ensure that what you've been working on crosses over and is relevant. If you train with the right minded people, they will also give you feedback on what is working well, as well as areas that you need to work on. You can then be confident that your game will grow to be well rounded and effective.
125.
126. 5. Have fun with it.
127. Remember why you train...and that should be for enjoyment. Whether you train for the social aspects, competition, self defence or for fitness, we can often get bogged down in 'getting good' mindset when really we should be enjoying the journey. The more fun you have, the more open to the experiences you will be and your overall progress will be more consistent and rewarding.
128.
129. 6. Act like a child.
130. Be prepared to ask why and find understanding in each function of a technique. If you don't know something, don't be afraid to ask for help, even if the question may appear silly. As adults we become very self conscious and don't like to appear as if we don't possess knowledge on a certain subject. Kids differ and if they have a question, they usually feel quite free to ask and therefore benefit.
131. It's also important to play with Jiu Jitsu and feel free to make mistakes. Playing is often where some great discoveries are made.
132.
133. 7. Leave your comfort zone.
134. Test yourself regularly. Be prepared to try new techniques, and fail. Every failure is a step closer to success. Go in competitions and not focus on the win, rather focus on becoming comfortable in an intimidating situation and look for improves within your competition performances instead of the overall result. If you do win....take that as a bonus.
135.
136. 8. Listen.
137. Listen and follow instructions and advice from your coach. Your coach has only your best interests at heart and wants you to succeed. As a coach myself, there's nothing better than watching a student improve and become successful in accomplishing goals. Also listen to any advice higher ranks have to pass on, they've been where you are and have found a way to get through.
138.
139. 9. Watch people roll.
140. Watch higher belts train and look for the differences in their techniques and decision making compared to yours. Follow tip 6 and ask higher belts the 'how's' and 'why's' of what they're doing. It will give you a better insight to the strategy of Jiu Jitsu. Nowadays with the internet we have more access to information than we have ever had in history. Watch videos of top athletes and look at what techniques and strategies they use as well. You may not be able to pick their brain but if you watch enough footage of a particular athlete you should begin to see their methods and application of technique.
141.
142. 10. Video yourself.
143. This may seem an odd one but you will be amazed at what you will pick up when reviewing footage of yourself training or competing. There are so many things we are not aware of while in the middle of a roll and often it isn't good stuff either. You may see how bad your posture is while in the guard, or that you're on your knees more than you realised when on side control. Watching video of yourself can give you an honest view of the areas you need to improve on as well as seeing where you're doing well.
I strongly believe that observing people who live an indigenous lifestyle and comparing it to the daily habits of modern way life to find solutions for health issues that affect our quality of life is a very useful concept.
