Davie was closed from Burrard to Broughton and all manner of kiosks were set up to trade all kinds of wares and opinions. I wandered from end to end. There were loads of art, local one of a kind handmade bags and dresses, food stalls and the usual hawkers of scarves, peasant dresses, paraphernalia and hats. I&#39;m not much for main stage performances at street festivals so I didn&#39;t stick around to watch.&lt;br /&gt;

It&#39;s true. I haven&#39;t had any sort of fashion plan. No flags I&#39;ve been meaning to wave. I simply put on clothes that please me viscerally. Most are hand me downs from friends (and so remind me of them), value village scores (for the win), or gifts from a fashionable brother (which makes me feel lucky). My yellow pea coat has followed me from Edmonton to Victoria to Calgary to Winnipeg, Madrid, London, and Vancouver. The mary janes are newer, I got them during the famed Spanish rebajas (sales) in Madrid last summer. I love wearing my black Camper boots in the winter and black mary janes the rest of the time. The combination of coat and shoes was inevitable. Little did I know I would be unwittingly channeling the charmingly impetuous, irrepressibly mischievous, &lt;a href=&quot;http://www.madeline.com/&quot;&gt;Madeline&lt;/a&gt;, the feisty French girl created by Ludwig Bemelmans. I did not grow up with the stories. I have never seen nor read any of the classic Madeline. How I&#39;ve gone this long without knowing this character, astonishes me! That I happen to now dress (unknowingly) like her gives me a thrilling shiver of amusement. I must find her stories and devour them! I need to know about this girl. I have a feeling I&#39;m going to be smittened. I don&#39;t know why I&#39;m channelling the fashion sense of a little Parisian girl but that&#39;s what I&#39;ve done and it&#39;s damn hilarious.

By then the party had packed up and all had turned pumpkin. I left London 6 months ago yesterday. And it is only now (3 countries and 1 year later) that I sleep in my own bed, in my own space again. Yes, it&#39;s been a long journey to find a home and I&#39;ve had a lot of help from friends and strangers along the way. I couldn&#39;t have predicted the way this story has unfolded when I packed up my life in Madrid and got on a plane to London. But here I am. Although Chinatown is a popular tourist attraction, as it is one of the oldest Chinatowns in North America, it is also where many lower income Chinese residents live as opposed to the more affluent Chinese who have built many Asian-theme malls in Richmond to service their needs. I&#39;m told by the connoisseurs that the finest Chinese food is not to be found in Chinatown, but in Richmond. I lived in barrio Lavapiés in Madrid for 4 years and saw really exceptional graffiti come and go and come again, and then later I lived near London&#39;s Shoreditch graffiti scene, where I saw eye candy everywhere I looked. So needless to say, I had higher expectations from Vancouver than the polite murals I&#39;ve seen decorating store fronts. I was later schooled as to why there&#39;s this muzzle on Vancity&#39;s graffiti scene. Turns out that there&#39;s a city bylaw that requires property owners to have graffiti removed within 10 days after being served a notice from the City or pay the city&#39;s removal cost. Ouch. These days it&#39;s the City of Vancouver that sanctions and funds some of the better murals seen around town through its graffiti-management program. I guess that explains the general lack of beautiful and/or politically edgy street art on the walls around here. The raw thin beef slices cooked in the broth as I gave the bowl a stir after I loaded on the fresh Thai Basil and bean sprouts. Can&#39;t get fresher than that. I don&#39;t have a photo of it because I was just too busy eating and slurping, and my only thought of maybe writing something for this blog occurred to me long after the bowl&#39;s concave face was gleaming and empty. And this my friends is a testament to how yummy it was. My mind could barely focus on what my dinner companion was saying, my head just nodded as I slurped. I ordered the Laksa because it&#39;s one of my favourite Malay dishes and it didn&#39;t disappoint. The bowlful of tofu, boiled egg, shrimp, chicken, fish cakes and noodles in a coconut curry broth was just the right combination of spicy and coconutty. While this typical curry Laksa from Singapore was tasty, at some point I will have to find a place that does Sarawak Laksa, which has a base of Sambal belacan, sour tamarind, garlic, galangal, lemon grass and coconut milk, topped with omelette strips, chicken strips, prawns, fresh coriander and lime OR go visit my mommy in Edmonton and have her make me some ;) Mmmm. Anyway, back to Hawkers. My dinner companion is vegetarian and we were pleased with the amount of selection she had to choose from. She ended up getting the Mee Siam, which is thin rice noodles (vermicelli) smothered in a spicy, sweet and sour, peanut gravy. Yum.
