78.
..meaning the, classic, storied, glorious, TRUE SIXERS uniforms that we signed the petition for, and that we outscooped everyone about. The kind of unis that never get old, to sum it up.

 79.
Few hours before unveiling the 2009/2010 jerseys, Sixers said via Twitter, in reply to a tweet by your fav guido blogger, that the new uniforms would have been “a nice blend of old and new”. As soon as I read that, I started having a bad feeling…

 80.
I think that by simply going back to our 1982/83 jerseys – ok, minus the short shorts – we would have done a better job.

 81.
But I don’t want to sound too negative or only complain: they are still a HUGE IMPROVEMENT over the ugly ones we wore for more than a decade.

 82.
Let’s see the half full part of the glass: it’s nice to definitely get rid of the nonsense black jerseys. And the fact that the new ones have our old logo on (the real, Sixers logo !!) is a big plus, that’s true.

 83.
But the red ones look “too Clippers” to me (hey, I love the Clippers and I think their jerseys are very cool… but it’s their jerseys !), and the white ones…well… uhm… they look like… a missed chance.

 84.
Not horrible, not bad, and not even mediocre, don’t get me wrong.

 85.
More like “coulda/shoulda”, if you know what I mean.

 116.

I just came out of a 30 minute conference call with Ed Stefanski, where 5-6 bloggers, including my sorry arse, had the opportunity to put him several questions.

 117.
Too busy to have the full transcript, check www.sixers.com lately or other (better, LOL) blogs such as Depressed Fan, Recliner GM, Philadunkia, Real GM, The 700 Level or Liberty Ballers (all attending, all their links on the blogroll), anyway here are some of the thoughts he expressed:

 118.
– were seriously interested in signing Warrick but Bucks’ offer was better for him cuz it guaranteed him more playing time. They have 13 players under contract now and want to reach 14.
119. – were also interested in Ramon Sessions but they are so pleased with what they are seeeing in Jrue that decided not to go after him
120. – (answering my question) confirms my feeling that Sixers are currently the 4th team in town and that Philly is mainly a football city
121. – doesn’t believe that having our own D-league team would help
122. – EXPECTATIONS ARE “making the playoffs” and “making some noise” in them (pretty realistic if you ask me)
123. – extremely happy with Jrue, his natural position is PG but he thinks that Holiday can play WITH Lou Williams
124. – seeing Holiday in the gym every day they realized he’s very strong, a good finisher, his shot is better than expected, even if he has to work on making the release quicker. He’s a “willing defender” which is highly appreciated
125. – open competition for 2 guard but thinks that the lineup will be LW, Iguodala, Thad, Brand, Sam
126. – Thinks team has a lot of versatility and a lot of different lineups can be used
127. – thinks that Kapono signing is underrated cuz nobody talks about him (LOL)
128. – Jason Smith had 4 full months after being totally cleared to do anything on the court, has showed very good signs, can shoot and added bulk (250 if I got it well)
129. – similar for Brand, he’s “on a mission”, did a lot of rehab also in LA, he’s fully healthy and wants to show what player he is
130. – Willie Green’s situation is “interesting” (LOL), WG is in competition for minutes at the two but he says that in NJ they played with Kittles and Lucious Harris as back up PGs and can’t exclude that the same won’t happen here (= that’s pretty scaring, LOL)
131. – has no problem with int’l players (my question again), in NJ they drafted Krstic, Planinic, Nachbar, Sixers didn’t sign them so far only cuz of circumstances but they are looking at foreign players
132. – Flip Murray wasn’t signed cuz he asked for a “sizeable payday”
133. – Andre Miller wasn’t dealt last year cuz the offers they got weren’t interesting, same for sign & trade options this summer. They are happy with what he did in helping us to the playoffs
134. – Iguodala will play some point as well
135. – thinks playoffs experience for young guys will be a huge factor in their growth

 136.
I’m sure I missed a lot more so check the sites I told you for full coverage, this is the best I could do.

 193.
I think this departure will make the Sixers worse. Possibly much worse. It’s a huge loss. Probably underrated by most analysts and fans.

 194.
If you followed this site you know I am a great fan of Andre Miller. I think he’s a really good player and was instrumental in getting us to the last two playoffs (short, I know) runs and making our kids better.

 195.
Portland did a nice move by signing him and expect Miller to have solid seasons there, it will be a great addition for the young Blazers core. I I will try to follow Portland closer next year and I wish Andre the best.

 196.
What will happen on Sixers side? I think we have to consider this move (?) from two standpoints.

 197.
But I have to be honest, overall I think Ed Stefanski and management blew this one.

 198.
FINANCIALLY

 199.
Of course NOT extending a 33 y/o PG when you already have a young, promising (?) PG (???) could make sense. Especially with a shrinking economy, low attendance numbers, (reportedly) even lower season tickets renewals.

 200.
If you think the Wachovia center had too often too many empy seats in the past two seasons, expect the holes in the standings to be more next year. And it’s not that hundreds of Miller fans will stop buying tickets, of course: it’s more that the team will win less games, I’m afraid.

 201.
I think that Sixers could have offered Miller the same 3 year/21 mill deal that he got from Portland, especially with the third year being a team option. It’s a reasonable amount of $ for a player of his value, to me.

 202.
I said numerous times that a contract around 2 year/16 mill would have been fine, a right mix between mantaining flexibility for the summer of 2011 – when we’ll have three expiring contracts (Dalembert, Green and Kapono, for around 23 mill) – and the needing to, well, win games, go deeper in the playoffs… those kind of things that in the League MIGHT count, you know ???

 203.
To sum it up, the (understandable) need to save money on a veteran’s contract could become a boomerang for Sixers, in terms of decreased box office revenues, depleted roster and so on.

 204.
I am just a blogger, I don’t know what were ownership’s guidelines: probably they weren’t willing to spend big money on him, period.

 205.
But at the end of the day, we lost Miller and got NOTHING in return, that’s the hurting truth. The “sign & trade mode” Stefanski talked about some weeks ago resulted more into a “sign (with another team) while Sixers are left with crap”. Bad (non) move, really.

 206.
TECHNICALLY

 207.
Again, I have to be honest: I don’t feel so confortable with Lou Williams as starting PG next season.

 208.
First, I don’t think Lou is a PG. Second, he’s coming after a pretty disappointing season. Third, he’s handed a starting spot after having showed… nothing to deserve it. Not a great message, for him and his team mates, I think. Sixers are basically saying “you will be a starter because we don’t have a better option”.

 209.
On the other side, to complete the picture, – and also to throw in some optimism, in pure S4g style… – we have to consider that:

 210.
1) in Jordan’s system you don’t need a traditional PG (= Miller), while a combo guard (= Williams) could work well. True.

 211.
2) Lou Williams is still very young, extremely talented and can improve. No need to go on details about the areas where he has to improve: defense, defense, defense, defense; then decision making, looking more for his team mates and less for his shots (even if I think he will NEVER be a pass-first point guard), leadership. And defense, too. That’s a lot of work to do. But he has all the skills to get it done.

 212.
3) Sixers’ will probably sign another PG to fill a backcourt that as of now is not only thin but also overall poor: no disrespect but TODAY Williams, Green & Holiday form probably the worst rotation of guards in the NBA. Wanna go with them vs Rondo-Allen, Nelson-Carter-Pietrus?

 213.
The names that I am hearing aren’t exciting (I’d still take Tinsley, even with the baggage, over Flip Murray, Arroyo etc) but it’s crystal clear that an addition has to be done, and will be done. NONE of the available PGs are better than Miller.

 214.
4) Iguodala, that is not happy for Miller’s departure:

 215.

“I aint gone lie, I’m still a lil bitter over this dre miller situation. I knew he wasn’t comin back, but reality is settin in…”

 216.
will probably play the two at the beginning of the season. I hope he does good there because we would need that badly.

 217.
A line up of Lou Williams – Andre Iguodala – Thaddeus Young – Elton Brand – Sam Dalembert looks good for another playoffs run and another first round exit.

 218.
Good luck in Portland Andre Miller, you are a good player, a good guy and I really liked what you did for this team. You will be missed.

 219.
Have great holidays everybody, see you at the end of August !!

 247.
Sixers just released this ‘shocking’ practice video:

 248.
I have few comments to make.

 249.
1) nice to see Dalembert practicing in offseason, he has a reputation for being lazy and not working on his game during the summer.

 250.
Good sign, he’s showing some serious committment (or fear to lose his starting spot? LOL).

 251.
2) his accent (french?) is sweet, I never listened to him speaking in interviews before. He really seems a good dude… too bad he drives us nuts with all his dumb plays…

 252.
3) Jason Smith looks BIG. He worked hard in the weight room, evidently. Props to him.

 253.
He is still explosive, though (did you check the dunks? similar to the ones he got us used to in his rookie year – like in the pic) and seems on his way to full recover.

 254.
I am a Jason Smith fan and I hope he will be back at 100% and contribute next year. Enough of him in press conferences and presentations, we need his arse on a bball court, and with a (classic) Sixers jersey on.

 255.
4) I like Jrue Holiday’s shooting form. He has nice mechanics. He has to extend his range clearly but he has a solid ‘shooting fundamentals’ base to build on.

 256.
He’s working with Mc Kie, let’s hope he doesn’t imitate Blue with the ultra-slow shot release (LOL).

 257.
In a period with few real Sixers news, this was a nice break.

 288.
Yes, no blockbuster trades at the horizon, no all star signings, apparently.

 289.
Still I managed to get some info that I wanted to share with readers.

 290.
No breaking news or anything shocking, I warn you.

 291.
But still it’s important to make some things 100% sure.

 292.
So here is what Sixers4guidos just learned:

 293.
NEGOTIATIONS WITH ANDRE MILLER

 294.
Few days ago Stefanski said that Sixers were in “sign-and-trade” mode. No updates since, so that should give us an idea about the situation with Andre Miller and the likelihood of his return.

 295.
= no Andre Miller in 2009/2010 (not good news, to me).
296.
297. COMPLETING THE ROSTER

 298.
The fact that Sixers are looking for three more players to round out the roster, and reach 14, is confirmed: Stefanski said “a guard, a swingman and two big men”.

 299.
No direction about specific skills they are looking for in those players (off/def minded, young/vets, specialists etc), but Stefanski has a list of players at those positions he is keeping his eye on in regards to the team’s needs.

 300.
(I hope Calvin Booth didn’t make the list, same for Kevin Ollie)

 301.
MAKING THE SUMMER LEAGUE AND SPLITTING THE TEAM WITH THE NETS

 302.
As coach Jordan said in Orlando, this particular instance worked for Philly and New Jersey because Sixers and Nets have many links and various relationships. Coach Frank followed up by saying, “In these economic times, look, you’ve got to be fiscally very responsible and I think you just have to be prudent in the decisions you make”.

 303.
“Every group is different. This worked for us and Philly and it made sense, and who knows what the future holds.” So there was basketball thought and a financial component that Sixers took into consideration.

 304.
(still doubtful about the effectiveness of the decision, from a mere bball perspective I mean, but whatever, no big deal. That’s why it’s called SUMMER League, after all)
305.
306. ABOUT JORDAN & DALEMBERT RELATIONSHIP AND THEIR RECENT CONVERSATION

 307.
“There wasn’t ever anything that needed to be cleared up between them”, it’s said, nor was there any animosity between the two. It was a good chance for them to meet face-to-face and they both came away with optimism.

 308.
Jordan said that everyone is going to start with a clean slate – Sammy included – but if players are unable to fulfill or accept the roles that are defined for them, he will hold them accountable and make necessary adjustments.

 309.
(Good news. Still amazed by how can anybody talk to Sam for three consecutive hours… shoulda have taped that, LOL)

 310.
THE ELTON BRAND SITUATION

 311.
Brand is cleared and has been working out this off-season both in Philadelphia and Los Angeles and he will be ready for the start of training camp. A story on his off-season will be up on Sixers’ official site soon.

 312.
(cool. Few talked/talk about Brand, if you noticed. I think he will bounce back and have a good season)
313.
314. INT’L SCOUTING (OR LACK THEREOF)

 315.
Courtney Witte recently returned from New Zealand for the Under 19 championships. While it can’t be said anything about bringing in a non-american player this season, if there is a player available that Sixers’ scouts think would fit, they would certainly pursue him.

 316.
(Euro Championship 2009 will start in Poland this September, Sixers will keep an eye on the event for sure.

 317.
BTW I’ll try to cover it on Sixers4guidos 2.0: let’s just hope the next int’l Sixer will fall in the Nocioni/Scola/Kleiza rather than the Rentzias/Giricek/Bavcic category…)

 343.

In a pretty quiet period with (no) real Sixers-related news, Hoopshype made this nice interview with former Net Bostjan Nachbar.

 344.
Why I post it here?

 345.
First because I have to prove I am alive, second because it’s an interesting read, especially in terms of understanding the economic situation of int’l bball and reminding the differences between european and NBA hoops, third because there is a fun Sixers reference at the end, as you will check.

 346.
Since the quality of the video from Hoopshype is not very good, I found another video of the same play, that you might ‘enjoy’:

 347.
 348.
So much for the “intimidating presence”.

 349.
Sam got shawnbradleylized there…

 372.

Free agent point guard Mike Bibby has agreed to a three-year deal worth an estimated $18 million to return to the Hawks, according to two people familiar with the situation.

 373.
What does this mean for the Sixers? GOOD NEWS. For Miller fans, I mean.

 374.
1) one less option for Sixers. Bibby, rumored to get interest by Stefanski, won’t come to Philly.

 375.
2) one less option for Miller. He won’t go to Atlanta.

 376.
3) setting a reasonable range for Miller’s new contract. Bibby is two years YOUNGER than Miller and will make 6 mill per year, for the next three. Same contract of Artest, btw, both for length and amount of $. Funny, uh?

 377.
(Six millions per year is also what Kapono will make until 2011, but I’m digressing…)

 378.
This deal means that the original request of 3 years at 10 mill per year made by Miller’s camp is out of the market. They will have to calm their arses down downsize it.

 379.
The 2 year-16 mill proposal I (nearly) randomly made here few posts ago looks even too generous now… maybe something in the 12-14 mill territory could be more realistic. And eventually get the job done.

 380.
Again, I am all for keeping Miller. For two years. At a fair price.

 381.
Time works in Sixers’ favor. Portland is perhaps the only (good) option left for Miller, but the TrailBlazers will probably make offers to other FAs, such as Lee, that won’t come for cheap.

 382.
Interesting situation here.

 410.
Andre Miller, through his agent, says he wants to stay in Philly.

 411.

“Andre has a strong interest, a strong desire to come back”.

 412.
Ed Stefanski likes Andre Miller and thinks Sixers are a better team WITH him.

 413.
Ricky has always been a great fan of Andre Miller too and would like to have him back next year. And the year after.

 414.
In the meantime, the first day of free agency in the NBA was extremely interesting, with Pistons throwing crazy money at Ben Gordon & Villanueva (!), Clippers getting Q Rich for Zach Randolph (!!) – another proof that the “There must be a reason why they are GMs in the NBA and you are just a blogger” is wrong – and Portland reportedly close to make a huge offer to Turkoglu.

 415.
Rumors pile up, and since we are talking PGs, the three year offer ready for 36 y/o Kidd is the most shocking one to me, especially coming from a team in rebuilding mode like New York.

 416.
Back to Sixers’ PG situation, if the request of 30 millions for 3 years reported by Tom Moore is true, I would say ‘goodbye Andre’.

 417.
I assume the Dalembert+Green-for-McGrady trade will not go down, so Sixers have to mantain their flexibility for the summer of 2011, when with Dalembert, Green and newly acquired Kapono coming off the books they will have around 23 millions in expiring contracts.

 418.
So the third year, in any Miller deal, should be a TEAM option. Which of course the Millers (Andre & Andy, his agent) will be reluctant to accept.

 419.
Any two year deal with Andre Miller is fine for me. I’d leave the GM to decide the amount of $: 16, 18 millions? You pick, I think those would be fair deals for current NBA standards. With two more years of Andre, Jrue Holiday will have the chance to grow as a PG – with Miller as tutor – and (hopefully) be ready to take the helm in 2011.

 420.
There might be another possibility: sign Miller for ONE year. For a higher amount of money, perhaps. 10 millions? 11? I would like that, also. Then again, that’s not what Miller & Miller are looking for, but one year from now the situation might be totally different and surely there could be more options for a very good PG like Andre.

 421.
There are two facts that can play a role during the (long, they say) negotiations with Miller:

 422.
1) the US economy. But we have seen different signs in this sense. For all the Boozers & Korvers (wisely) picking up their player options for next year, you see Portland on its way to give a 30 y/o player a (too) large five year deal, NY willing to sign a free agent until he will turn 39 (that would make Darrell Armostrong look like a rookie), or a franchise UNDER the cap, that seemed to be in financial troubles – and uninterested in seriously making the team better – adding a loser like Randolph and his 35 millions owed for the next two years. The NBA is crazy.

 423.
2) the boatload of PGs just landed in the NBA through the draft (9 in the first round). This can help the Sixers. Not saying every rookie will start and kick out the former starter, but, you know, a lot of teams now have many options for the spot and can entertain trades.

 424.
A solid veteran like Miller will always find a job and get paid big $ for it, but maybe his requests will be downsized a bit. This year, I mean.

 425.
To sum it up, I think Sixers are better off WITH Miller, but not at any price. I have faith Stefanski will do the right choice.

 426.
Yes, Miller has his well known flaws (defense vs quicker opponents, 3 pt shooting etc) but watching the team WITHOUT him has always been a pretty awful show. I like his silent leadership, the ability to always make the better choice, the clutchness.

 427.
We need him to continue in our process of growth, and I think Thad Young, Speights, Jason Smith, Lou Williams and the same Iguodala will greatly benefit by playing another year with Miller.

 428.
NOTES: I received an email announcing that on July the 4th there will be this ‘The best dunker in Philly’ event.

 429.

We are setting up an outdoor basketball court on Ben Franklin Parkway between 21st and 22nd this Saturday (July 4th), and will begin the competition at 4pm. The event is FREE and is part of the “Party on the Parkway” event already happening that day. (Btw…I heard Sheryl Crow and The Roots are doing a free concert that night!)

 430.
If anyone is interested, it should be fun. For me, getting there is a little complicated (LOL).

 431.
Reportedly, former Sixers Marc Jackson & Reggie Evans will NOT compete in the contest
