89.
FACE THE FACE
90. A Speed Show on the Post-Digital Self

 91.
curated by
92. Anika Meier & Aram Bartholl
93. 5.7.2019, 7:00 – 10:00pm
94. Internet Cafe – Midnightshop
95. Schönhauser Allee 188, Ecke Torstr., 10119 Berlin

 96.
Participating artists:
97. Lisette Appeldorn, Jeremy Bailey, Nadja Buttendorf, Petra Cortright, Constant Dullaart, Tom Galle, Lauren Huret, Johanna Jaskowska, Andy Kassier, Hanneke Klaver, Lynn Hershman Leeson, Echo Can Luo, Ines Marzat, Jillian Mayer, Andy Picci, Selam X

 98.
Social media algorithms have a preference for faces. People prefer friends to strangers and are more comfortable with the familiar in general. This preference applies to their own faces, too. Studies have shown that people like their mirror-reflected face most because that is how they are used to seeing themselves. “The selfie,” writes Nathan Jurgenson, “lets us share that mirror-view, what we see when contemplating our self, considering what we are.” Science is not yet convinced of what the critics are absolutely sure of: people who take selfies are narcissistic exhibitionists.

 99.
These days, when a person takes a photo to their plastic surgeon, it is of their own face. Smoothed and beautified by Snapchat and Instagram filters, it is the new ideal. Filters make people feel attractive. Masks and filters function as a barrier between the individual and the world, and people have always felt the need to change themselves by wearing makeup, getting plastic surgery, donning masks ,or using filters that simultaneously hide and reveal. Mask culture, thousands of years old, is currently undergoing a digital renaissance. Software-driven face-recognition apps on smartphones enable a new, shared experience of this ancient tradition. “The self one tries to express tends to be new, exciting, confessional, sexy, etc., because it plays as an advertisement. Identity is a series of ads for a product that doesn’t exist,” writes Rob Horning on digital identities.

 100.
In the early 1980s Lynn Hershman Leeson addressed the ways media changes the view of the self and promotes stereotypical norms in her series “Phantom Limbs.” Jeremy Bailey has been playing with floating, 3D objects in front of the camera since the early 2000s. The elaborate hardware and tracking programs he began with have now completely disappeared into the smartphone. Petra Cortright started using commercially-available webcam software with basic effects and folklore-inspired filters to create her series of YouTube portraits in 2009.

 101.
Now, a new generation of net artists is reflecting on the presentation of faces in the digital age. @AndyKassier, for example, explains in his video how to make the perfect selfie, while @jillianmayer gives tips on how to hide from surveillance cameras with makeup in her tutorial. @andypicci uses filters to criticise the desire for image cultivation in the era of social media and @johwska addresses the sort of beauty ideals promoted by celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner every day. The @selamxstudio collective, in turn, shows what happens when a beauty AI does Kylie Jenner’s make-up.

 102.
——————————————————————————————————————-

 104.
UPDATE:

 105.
Documentation

 106.
It has been a while since the last Speed Show but the concept is live and kicking!! The audience was very interested and enthusiastic about the show. In shortage of computers we decided to run this show with two pieces per computer in a split screen version which also reflects our smart phone era today. Thanks to all the artists participating in the show, thanks to everyone showing up last friday! Thanks to Kenan from Midnightshop-Internet cafe for having us!

 158. “We are surrounded by technology that decides our fate in every instance of our lives. These technologies are often invisible, they are these mysterious spells that work in the background… but you can make them visible, and as artists we have a duty to make these things visible; in the case of AI, to show people that this is nothing to be scared of. That it can produce beauty, something unseen, a new aesthetic.” – Lukas Rudig, Beauty_GAN

 182.
Speed Show LA: Manifesto

 183.
7:00-10:00 PM, Thursday, February 18, 2016 fb-event
185. 401 S Vermont Ave, Koreatown,
186. Los Angeles, CA 90020

 187.
Statement:

 188.

A manifesto is a published verbal declaration of the intentions, motives, or views of the issuer, be it an individual, group, political party or government. A manifesto usually accepts a previously published opinion or public consensus and/or promotes a new idea with prescriptive notions for carrying out changes the author believes should be made. It often is political or artistic in nature, but may present an individual’s life stance. [Wikipedia]

 189.
Manifestos have always played an important role in art movements. The tutorial for how to become a successful artist could be “Step 1: Write a manifesto!…” Sometimes the manifesto itself becomes the art work, or in other cases the opposite happens. A kind of unwritten manifesto is in place, an art scene influencing and quoting each others’ work with their own set of rules and aesthetic ideas. It also happens that an art work has strong manifesto qualities itself or that a single piece represents a whole generation of art. Computer code is by definition a manifesto, a set of rules which are interpreted by the machine. While we’ve been looking at screens and talking about the Internet, the physical manifestation of art work has played a particularly important role over the last ten years.

 190.
The very first Speed Show took place in Berlin in the summer of 2010. Six years later, after many Speed Shows world wide and a couple years break, I am very pleased to present the first Speed Show in Los Angeles. More than 20 artists, international and local, from LA, will present a wide range of art from classic works to brand new pieces. It is again an interesting moment (like in 2010) to take a look at the different generations of net artist, Internet artists, art under the influence of the Internet etc … A lot has happened since 2010. Different art scenes developed and moved on, the art world got closer to the Internet and Snowden drained our comfortable bath of naivety. LA 2016! Time for a new manifesto?

 245. The 3D Additivist Manifesto blurs the boundaries between art, engineering, science fiction, and digital aesthetics. We call for you –artists, activists, designers, and critical engineers – to accelerate the 3D printer and other Additivist technologies to their absolute limits and beyond into the realm of the speculative, the provocative and the weird. 281. Joan Heemskerk and Dirk Paesmans, collectively known as JODI, are rightfully venerated for their countless contributions to art and technology, working as an artistic duo since the mid-90’s. Generally referred to as pioneers of “net.art,” that oft-misunderstood “movement” combining the efforts of artists using the internet as a medium circa 1994, JODI is revered not only for their artistic meditations on the increasing presence of new technology in our daily lives, but also for their fuck-if-I-care attitude toward both the establishments of the technology and art worlds. JODI’s famous five-word “acceptance” speech—if you could call it that—for their 1999 Webby Award in art, simply read, “Ugly commercial sons of bitches.” (Rhizome)

 306. “The California state automobile license plate is arguably the sexiest form of unique alphanumerical government identification. I’ve created a simple text editor which places text typed via the user’s keyboard onto California state license plates, 7 characters at a time. …”Text editor” is probably too flattering a label for it, but it does have a blinking cursor and wraps words at the edge of the page. 326. American Reflexxx is a short film documenting a social experiment that took place in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Director Alli Coates captured performance artist Signe Pierce as she strutted down a busy oceanside street in stripper garb and a reflective mask. The pair agreed not to communicate until the experiment was completed, but never anticipated the horror that would unfold in under an hour. The result is a heart wrenching technicolor spectacle that raises questions about gender stereotypes, mob mentality, and violence in America. Directed by: Alli Coates. Signe Pierce (b.1988) is a photo, video, and performance artist uses who her body, her lens, and her surroundings to frame questions regarding the perception of actual reality within an increasingly digital society. Through defining emergent networks and layered instructions, he has defined a unique area of visual experience that builds upon concrete art, conceptual art, experimental animation, and drawing. While dynamic, generative software remains his core medium, work in variable media including prints, objects, installations, and performances materialize from his visual systems.

 336. “Been super busy moving out of LA and then in Puerto Rico (don’t ask- I don’t know why) I def won’t be able to swing making something for the speed show – which bums me out cuz I really wanted to. You can use the computers are gay thing if you’d like. But the way I see it – it’s an Aram Bartholl piece not a Borna Sammak piece ;-) Xoxo – we’ll get it right next time” (Borna) “Borna Sammak is a cutting edge contemporary artists I know but often struggles to deliver work on time. Therefore I show his strong quote above in lack of an actual piece.” (Aram)

 341. Alexei Shulgin & Natalie Bookchin’s “Introduction to net.art” serves as a self aware, tongue-in-cheek manifesto for the net.art scene of the 90’s. The central component of the work is its text – a simplified beginners guide to net.art, followed by DIY instructions on how one can become a net artist. Steps are listed such as “Preparing Your Environment”, followed by potential modes of working and genres one might adhere to for the production of successful net.art. Other sections include “What You Should Know”, “Critical Tips and Tricks for the Successful Modern net.artist”, and “Utopian Appendix (After net.art)”. In 1999 this text was exhibited engraved in stone. This piece effectively embodies the transgressive, and humorously self-aware style of the 90’s net.art scene. (Rhizome)

 346. A two channel 3D computer animation diptych recreating an online flame war about degrees of expertise around the computer fantasy game Everquest. The specific points of contention may appear recondite at first glance, but gradually the unfolding narrative acquires an unexpected pathos and reveals a glimpse into the shifting codes of masculinity. Eddo Stern works on the disputed borderlands between fantasy and reality, exploring the uneasy and otherwise unconscious connections between physical existence and electronic simulation. His work explores new modes of narrative and documentary, experimental computer game design, fantasies of technology and history, and cross-cultural representation in computer games, film, and online media.

 351. It is only natural that, without much reflection, humans continue to perform the functions which they were born to execute– producing new generations of children at a rate of 131.4 million births per year. But does anyone ever consider asking their children whether they want to be alive? Does anyone ever deliver a document stating terms and conditions, risks and benefits of being alive to their children? This Confidential Parent/Unborn Child Agreement will assure a fair disclosure of what is to be expected if one chooses to experience being alive. Born on a Kibbutz in Israel and immigrated to the US on her own when she was twenty-two, Merav Tzur received her MFA from UC Berkeley and BFA from California College of the Arts. Her work has been shown at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Kroswork Gallery, SOMArts Gallery, SFPAI, A Simple Collective, and Root Division and in Israel.

That’s why this show aims to provide a sort of snapshot to appreciate the internet cafe as something of a non-place with its strange aesthetics. Through the work of eleven young international artists and designers, the internet cafe as a place will be resuscitated and put into a modern context. The various internet art works show, reflect, explain and question current internet phenomena. There will be websites, videos and installations.☞ Come along, bring your friends and enjoy some art and music in the internet café atmosphere!

 434. 网吧 Internet Cafe Dongsibei Dajie 74
435. 网吧东四北大街 74, Beijing

 436.
Astrid Myntekær, Anna Viktoria Eschbach and Antonie Angerer are inviting you to a day with net-art at a local Netcafe Wangba
437. in Beijing, China.

 438.
The SPEED SHOW format:

 439.
Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on them for one day only.

 440.
Speed-show is a concept conceived by the artist Aram Bartholl in 2010 and the show in Beijing will be part of a larger number of exhibitions, which have taken place globally for the past five years. https://speedshow.net

 441.
As an art form, making works for the Internet is a practice dating back to the early 1990´s. Making art for internet-browsers has meant the aesthetics of the works created have drastically changed over recent years. True to the genre we are showing art works at a local net-cafe outside of conventional art spaces.

 442.
The show will feature online works, videos, gifs, performance and live pieces from:

 443.
Ai Weiweiwei // Olafur Eliasson // Michael Bodenmann // Jiajia Zhang // Barbara Signer // Michelle Proksell // Netizen.net // Hannah Heilmann // Lillemon // Ida Kvetny // Min Liu // Martin Kohout // Shuang // Bing Bin // Jerome Araki // Astrid Myntekær // Quangquan // Hangfeng // Michiel Hilbrink // Sandra Vaka Olson // Kristoffer Ørum // Daniel Stempfer // Andrew de Freitas // Abby Lee Sarver // Katy Roseland // Katrin Hornek // Lin Ke // Xiao Ding // Kyle Skor, Chen Xi // Malwina Migacz // Frank Kai // Ren Lun // He Yu // Sun Xiaoxing // Han Xu//Xiaoshi Vivian Vivian Qin

 444.

https://speedshow.net

 448.

 452.
———————————————————————–
453. DOCUMENTATION
454. ———————————————————————–

 455.
It was a fun event. Many different artist from all over the world and many people rediscovering Internet Cafe. It was quite a challenge to do this show in China, since you have to register one computer each with one passport, therefore even before the show started we were organizing a crowd of people registering a computer to each.

 456.
In the end it was super nice to actually have these works -often decontextualized in huge commercial galleries in China- in an environment, that in an age where internet is mostly carried around still questions the way of exhibiting new media and web based art.

 503.
What is Network Art?

 504.
Network art could be described as artworks that use the Internet as a specific medium. Just as painters use a canvas and a brush, net artists use the Internet and write computer code. Often, network artworks make us reconsider the Internet (both technological and cultural), exploring the playful, political and aesthetic possibilities of the medium, rather than just that ‘thing’ we use everyday.

 505.
What’s this speedshow[2.0] btw??

 506.
The SPEED SHOW is a concept initiated by German artist Aram Bartholl in 2010. The idea is to turn a public place like a cyber/internet café into a gallery space, an evening exhibition for browser-based network art. Nearly four years later, the Internet has been embedded in our everyday practices, most people have Internet access on their smartphones, and Internet cafés are becoming a thing of the past. In Hong Kong Internet cafés have all but disappeared. How does one create a SPEED SHOW if there are no existing public places dedicated to browsing the internet?

 507.
We propose to think of the entire city as a possible canvas and focus on public spaces dedicated to loitering and discussion, an environment we hope will incite discussion around network art. Since the 90s, many net artists have been experimenting with the Internet as an artistic medium and explored its characteristics.

 508.
Kubrick is a locale comprised of a café, a bookstore, and an art space. Most people bring their laptops to work there. By adding computers showing network art pieces, we transform the space, adding points of interest in this milieu. People in the café use the Internet medium, perhaps without paying much attention to its materiality. The SPEED SHOW focuses on this pervasive medium, looking beyond our habitual usage and its commodified framework, to its nooks and crannies, its textures, and its affordances. The SPEED SHOW turns the Kubrick hot spot into a temporary playground, transforming/translating web and cultural data in real time.

 524.
No-one Ever Cried At A Website – Speed Show

 525.
November 22, 2013, 5:00–6:30 pm EST, Computer training room, Facility for Arts Research, 3216 Sessions Road, Tallahassee FL

 526.
With FSU students: Monique Boileau, Alexis Cooper, Jonathan Davito, Danielle English, Justin Greenstein, Antoinette Janus, Scotty Johnson, Melissa Lidsky, Michelle Medrano, Denise Morrow, Lena Weissbrot, Meghan “Red” Yancey. Curated by: Owen Mundy

 527.
Students from the Fall 2013 Network Art and Typography classes in the Department of Art at Florida State are staging an exhibition titled No-one Ever Cried At A Website (Speed Show) on November 22 5:00–6:30 pm EST at the computer training room in the Facility for Arts Research, Tallahassee FL.

 528.
The exhibition title is modified from an article called, “No-one Ever Cried At A Website,” written by artist/coder Matt Pearson. The document examines how emotion is often forgotten when analyzing technologically-sophisticated works of art such as those which exist on the internet. It reminds readers that painting was once a technology, and asks how beauty, empathy, and interaction can all be triggers for emotional response regardless of the medium for delivery. The prompt for the works in this show, created mostly collaboratively, over the course of 10 days, and specifically for this exhibition, is to address how emotion can be used to engage online audiences to look, listen, and be moved by internet-based art.

 529.
Speed Show exhibition, popularized by artist, Aram Barthol, are arranged as following: “Hit an Internet-cafe (or computer classroom), rent all computers they have and run a show on them for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to be on-line and are shown in a typical browser with standard plug-ins.”

 530.
All the works are posted here: http://web.art.fsu.edu/mundy/2013f_web2/speed-show/

 560.
Transfer3D SPEED SHOW will explore the episodic ideological background as well as trends of art that refer to the issues of three-dimensionality and interactivity. We are reviewing trends that are emerging now, and explore the evolution of three-dimensional object creation. Currently, we are at a pivotal moment where a new world of art is closer to the foundations set by virtual reality. The invited artists dissect these issues and experiment in various techniques with new technological possibilities offered to us by the Internet we have today.

 561.
Just as the ‘Z-buffer’ shows the distance from the observer, Transfer3D SPEED SHOW will present a picture of the observed trends and relationships in the net art that widely employs the medium of 3D design.

 562.
Categories which will be presented at the show: Real 3D, Magic 3D, Fake 3D, Dirty 3D, Glitch 3D, Anti 3D, Pseudo 3D, Augmented 3D, 3D Ready and 2.5 D

 649.
“Graffiti Markup Language (.gml) is a universal, XML based, open file format designed to store graffiti motion data (x and y coordinates and time). The format is designed to maximize readability and ease of implementation, even for hobbyist programmers, artists and graffiti writers. Popular applications currently implementing GML include Graffiti Analysis and EyeWriter. Beyond storing data, a main goal of GML is to spark interest surrounding the importance (and fun) of open data and introduce open source collaborations to new communities. GML is intended to be a simple bridge between ink and code, promoting collaborations between graffiti writers and hackers. GML is today’s new digital standard for tomorrow’s vandals.” http://www.graffitimarkuplanguage.com/

 819. The photos were taken outdoors, along an equidistant radius, establishing the tower as a center point. A circle was drawn on a satellite map to determine the relevant shooting locations by address in order to compose an animated loop in which the tower appears to turn on its axle.

 825. Within the overall loop of “Tick” , there are many smaller loops (or microloops) occurring in concert, all leading nowhere except back to their own starting points. The freewheeling and open subjects of the videos are in this way constrained by very definitive, fruitless cycles – mimicking the obsessive and mythological themes touched upon in VanillaRoyal’s larger collection of works.

 835. “The installation is centered on a cube projected on the outside and within. The image projected on the four faces of the cube is that of a prison cell. A prisoner, in black-and-white striped costume, his eyes shut, has new eyes painted on his eyelids. Each side is a video sequence comprising still images. Inside the cube is a shadow of a barred window and a silhouette of an old man using his hands to create shadow figures of different animals and plants. The shadow artist Albert Almoznino created the act especially for the installation.”

 1305.
Public Access is an exhibition of Internet-based works by a group of artists originating from the Americas. The exhibition is presented as a ‘Speed Show’, which has become popular exhibition format in the US, but is the first of its kind in the UK. Conceived by artist Aram Bartholl in 2010, a speed show entails creating a gallery private view for browser based Internet art in a public cyber-café for one night. The exhibition format is free and can be applied by anyone, anywhere, any time.
1306. Public Access presents a selection of works by Internet artists who address the nature of public participation and relational platforms. Since the advent of social networking, Internet art has occupied a critical position between mass media and social movements, exposing their impact on human behaviour in the public sphere. In an age of increasing dependence on both human and corporate online presence, nearly every online activity is exploited by Web 2.0 software. The spontaneous nature and dynamic context of the Speed Show situates Internet art at its most vibrant in the act of dialogue, connection and exchange.

 1307.
In keeping with the networked modes of distribution, Public Access takes over Living Space; a pioneering social enterprise Internet café in Waterloo that has been offering low-cost Internet access to the local community since 2003. This pop-up exhibition is located in the natural habitat of Internet art as opposed to enclosing it in the traditional gallery environment. Simultaneously the location highlights the fact that the Internet café, once hailed as a utopian blueprint for social hubs, may soon become an obsolete model due to more widespread availability to Wi-Fi via mobile technologies.

 1308.
An exhibition catalogue will be available to download from the Public Access website from 12 June 2012, with written contributions from Marc Garrett, Kenneth Goldsmith and Marialaura Ghidini.

 1309.
Curated by Rachel Falconer, Ruth Hogan, Augustina Matuseviciute and Youna Shin, a group of MA students from the Curating Contemporary Art programme at the Royal College of Art.
1310. This project was realised with the kind support of the Monique Beudert fund.
1311. Drinks sponsorship has been kindly provided by Brooklyn Brewery.

 1354.
Hi there,
1355. you´re kindly invited to the Speedshow of CuratingYouTube.
1356. This Exhibition will take place at Tele-Internetcafe, Torstrasse 124, Berlin Mitte (U8- RosenthalerPlatz) on Thursday, 7th of june 8 – 12pm.

 1357.
Watch me watching:
1358. A Speedshow ( https://speedshow.net/ ) turns Internetcafes into Exhibitionspaces in order to show online art in a simple and independent manner. “Watch me watching” is integrating one of the Internet-cafes main function – the videochat – into it´s exhibition concept. The objective of the exhibition is the act of watching videos as videocontent it self. There are three different video- categories to be identified within this Speedshow: reaction-videos, daily life- documentation as well as artistic reflections.

 1359.
Not only for Berliners:
1360. Even though you´re not able to visit this Exhibition in Person, you have the chance to participate virtually. When the exhibition is opening, you´ll find a link on our website – which will forward you to one of the Google+ Hangouts that are part of the exhibition.

 1361.
more information here:
1362. http://www.curatingyoutube.net/exhibitions/wmw/

 1363.
About the Exhibition- Format:
1364. “The SPEED SHOW exhibition format: Hit an Internet-cafe, rent all computers they have and run a show on them for one night. All art works of the participating artists need to be on-line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser with standard plug-ins. Performance and life pieces may also use pre-installed communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video chat etc). Custom software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files are not permitted.”
1366.
About CuratingYouTube.net
1367. As a label CuratingYouTube.net stands for the exploration of the Web 2.0 phenomena on the example of the online video sharing portal, Youtube. Approaching the phenomena from different angles and views CuratingYoutube.net comprises a variety of projects. Based on the assumption that the fusion of the net and real life has progresses to an extent where there is no difference between the net, that is virtual and real life, one could say, that work in the net is also work on the net and therefore real life.

 1368.
German

 1369.

All art works of the participating artists need to be on-line (not necessarily public) and are shown in a typical browser with standard plug-ins. Performance and life pieces may also use pre-installed communication programs (instant messaging, VOIP, video chat etc). Custom software (except browser add-ons) or off-line files are not permitted. Any creative physical modification to Internet cafe itself is not allowed. The show is public and takes place during normal opening hours of the Internet cafe/shop. All visitors are welcome to join the opening, enjoy the art (and to check their email.)
