<content:encoded><![CDATA[In having an opportunity to facilitate a short session today on the issues with KS3 PE and the future of KS3 PE it has got me thinking about the confidence on our leaders of PE in schools. And I’m sat on a train for 3 hours too!
Sir Michael Wilshire commented recently (something like – I can’t quite remember!)  there are no bad teachers only ones who lack confidence and self efficacy. And in this time of new curriculum with language like ‘multi skills’ and ‘competition’ being heavily prominent no wonder there is a lack of confidence. 
As a true advocate of ‘real PE’ – where the focus is on the holistic development of all learners is at the centre of what I believe in the future of KS3 PE lies in a change in mind-set of of leaders. A shift in focus from sport outcomes to ability outcomes where all pupils (through sport and physical activity) share success. Progress measures (New Assessment worries) therefore reflect developing abilities not how well they can forward roll! 
The future of KS3 PE must be rooted in holistic development and leaders must step away from coaching sports as their PE programmes engage les than half of learners. Do we have the confidence in our profession to change mind-set?

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Bath Spa Students continue to develop their strong link with Springfields Academy.
11 PGCSE students under the tutelage of Kirk Bizley performed with flying colours today at the Academy. It was their second visit and this time they were given the task of planning and delivering to a range of learners from some of our very vulnerable ASD to some true SEBD pupils from Downland School, Devizes. They also were tasked with planning and delivering an assembly.
The sessions were not judged or graded but what was really evident was that these PE trainees are excellent and are working hard to meet the needs of learners across the spectrum of ability.
Well done!

<content:encoded><![CDATA[We are all finding things a challenge day-to-day and you need ideas, people and events to come together to make a day like today so special.
The Mid Wilts Partnership Basketball Level 2 event was held today at Devizes School with teams from Sheldon School, Lavington School, Devizes School and Corsham School. There was also a team made up of 3 EBD/complex needs Special Schools – namely St Lukes School (Swindon), Downland School (Devizes) and Springfields Academy (Calne). 
A bold attempt to join 3 schools to form one squad of players to compete on a level playing field with their mainstream school peers. 
In previous posts I have mentioned the difficulty these able bodied but emotionally and socially disabled learner have when entering such an event. From the outset they are labelled as ‘special’ quite often crumble from the pressure of performing with peers who are emotionally and socially more competent. 
Today was different. 
The 9 players were brought together and played brilliantly. The basketball was raw and rushed but the effort and attitude was immense. The first games were lost by a single basket and when we managed to beat Sheldon School B team, there was a palpable feeling of real teamship and togetherness. It was during our second win against Devizes B team that I saw the thing that lifted my day. Joe, a 4ft nothing player, from St Luke’s School found himself in the centre of the key and scored a swish turned to the team gesturing his elation only to be scooped up by John, a 6ft 4 behemoth from Downland School, and carried over the half way line in celebration and in eagerness to continue to defend the following attack.
The final pool game saw a thrilling match against Devizes A that our team led throughout the game only to be denied in the last minute by 2 quick baskets leaving the team dissapointed. However their wins ensured they had a place in the Semi Final and although beaten by the eventual winners, Sheldon A, they could only walk away with their heads held high.

In reflection the achievement today can only be made better by realising that it was a year 9 event and with all 3 Special Schools together our total cohort of year9 pupils to choose from was 36. The teams we were playing against, wining against and getting to the semi final against have cohorts of 200-300.

The Academy is surfing through some choppy waters and with our 3rd visit from OFSTED in 10 months I have felt a need to reach out for 2 things that would help my colleagues and I to ride the waves while smiling. Original ideas are great but let’s be honest, we have all got our golden nuggets from impressionable others.
1. What simple, quick, easy to roll-out piece of pedagogy do you use to be outstanding more of the time
The comfort-stretch-panic curve on the wall in the gym. A tool to gauge learning, understanding, reflection and progress. See previous blog posts – developed from Create Development resources. 
new technology… Using the iPods and iPads to good effect… Not just as a camera
2. Dealing with the scrutiny – coping mechanisms, strategies that enable you to welcome OFSTED, rather than wilt away from them.
@RUloveskiing: they are just people. Do you believe in what you do? Believe in yourself. 
@princeqts: different day, same class. Just go with your normal flow. Two days and they will be gone! 
Believe in your systems and structures. If your curriculum is based on sound principles where pupils know what they learning and how they are getting there and of course your teaching demonstrates this… Life is easier….

<content:encoded><![CDATA[Stepped out of the SLT role to spend a wonderful 2 hours with PE colleagues from across North Wiltshire at the joint Training a Twilight at Sheldon School.
I was asked to lead a session on the use of iPads and IPods in PE. I started by saying that I had not planned a session but brought 15 iPads and 6 iPods. The aim of the session was to generate a discussion at every level about how PE practitioners can utilise these tool to enhance learned progress.
We played with ‘Coachs Eye’, discussed Socrative (wifi issues did not allow us to use it). Shared QR code orienteering and social networking. We also discussed the use of personal mobile devices in schools and policies for the safe use of Twitter.
It was brilliant to meet Lizzy from Devizes School the PEScholar Guru who I need to learn a thing or 2 from.

After a very pleasant summer break it has been a slight shock to the system this week. Saying that, PE has started on a positive note…. New instructors who are keen and quality, new displays the frame the learning and new pupils with their open minds ready to fill up with new learning!
I have been lucky enough to be promoted to Assistant Principal which presents another new challenge too!
