TEACHERS WHO WANT TO ACCESS SUPPLIES Supplies from Project Teacher are available to any teacher in the greater Wichita area. For details on store hours, head to the link in the “related links” section in the right-hand panel on this story. Stay up-to-date with KAKE News: As school districts across Kansas face budget cuts, a program is hoping to lighten the financial load to teachers. Project Teacher is a non-profit organization that helps give free school supplies to educators. On average, school supplies can cost teachers anywhere from $1, 000 to $1, 500. Some fear that budget cuts could fuel that cost. COMPETING FOR NEW GRANT Now, the program is looking for help to get access to a grant through State Farm. The non-profit has made it as a top-200 finalist for a $25, 000 grant, said Terry Johnson, director of Project Teacher. Project Teacher is a network affiliate with the Kids in Need Foundation. It’s one of 36 free school supply stores nationwide. The grant money would be used to pay for shipments of about $500, 000 in free school supplies for teachers. “Really opening our doors more often for teachers to come in and get supplies for their classroom, ” Johnson said. “So teachers can come in, they can shop for free No strings attached and they're able to come in and get supplies for their kids for teaching resources and even teaching resources for their classroom.” HOW YOU CAN HELP Johnson would like the community to help Project Teacher win the grant contest. The projects with the most online votes will the grant money. The top 40 competitors out of the 200 finalists will win money. People can log in through their Facebook accounts to vote. Each person can submit 10 votes to the cause that they support – all 10 votes can go to one cause. We’ve attached a link to the voting page on the “Related links” panel on the right side of the page. SUCCESS AFTER KAKE STORY In January, the program started an online fundraiser to and collected about $2, 100 to pay for a freight truck of free supplies. Now the program’s facility, located at Central and Tyler, is packed with more than $150, 000 in notebooks, pens, books, backpacks, duct tape and other essentials. KAKE News shared a story on air, and Johnson credits that story to aiding the campaign. “It definitely helped to keep our shelves stocked throughout the next school year and even further beyond the next school year as well, ” he said. “Teachers come in, especially with different budget cuts the schools are having to make. They're able to come in and get resources that they would be spending hundreds of dollars on for absolutely free.” HOW YOU CAN HELP In addition to giving your online votes to Project Teacher’s grant competition, they can use two forms of help throughout the year. 1. Donate money. The organization is able to get freight trucks full of school supplies from various vendors. However, the program has to pay for the shipment for those items. This can cost the program a couple thousand dollars for one shipment, but the supplies they get can amount to hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In order to be eligible to take the Certified Emergency Nurse Exam, one must have a current, unrestricted nursing license or nursing certificate that is equivalent to a Registered Nurse in the United States. It is also recommended, though not required, to have at least two years of experience as an emergency room nurse in the United States. To apply to take the CEN exam, an application must first be requested from the Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN). This can be done by filling out an online form on their website. The application can then be filled out and mailed with the appropriate fees to BCEN. Currently, it is $220 for an Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) member to take the exam, and $360 for a non-member. Once the application has been received by BCEN and approved, a handbook and an authorization letter will be sent to all qualified applicants. These materials will be sent within two weeks from when BCEN received the application in the mail. Once these materials are received, an exam may be scheduled with Applied Measurement Professionals by calling the phone number provided in the handbook. The exam must be scheduled during the 90 day testing window, and it must be scheduled at least four days in advance of the desired exam date. Exams are given at Applied Measurement Professionals sites in major metropolitan areas in the United States Monday through Friday, twelve months a year. Details on specific site locations can be found on the Applied Measurement Professionals website. It is recommended that one schedule their testing date and time as soon as possible after receiving the authorization letter in the mail. This can help in making sure that the desired test date and time are received. The Certified Emergency Nurse exam is a computer-based examination. It consists of 175 multiple choice questions. 150 of these CEN test items are scored, and 25 items are pretest items. The pretest items are not scored. There is a maximum of three hours in which to complete the entire CEN examination. Thirteen subject areas are covered on the CEN examination, and they are as follows: Cardiovascular Emergencies (17 items), Gastrointestinal Emergencies (9 items), Obstetrical, Genitourinary, and Gynecological Emergencies (10 items), Maxillofacial and Ocular Emergencies...

Caring for infants is a tremendous responsibility. We take that responsibility very seriously. We have spent years developing an infant program that is well thought out. Every detail has been meticulously planned from the design of the infant center to the selection of equipment, toys, curriculum and activities to the screening and training of infant caregivers. Parents can rely on our loving, dedicated staff of infant caregivers, chosen for their warmth and affectionate personalities. They provide nurturing, age appropriate stimulation and lots of love. Music, including classical, is played in the infant center daily. Recent studies have shown the enhanced effect of music on babies. They say music unlocks the creative spirit and strengthens the mind (The Mozart Effect). Infant rooms are packed with toys and equipment similar to the toys and equipment you have at home for your baby. Caregivers sit on gliders while holding, cuddling and feeding our little ones. There is even a private nursing station for Moms. The Learning Experience® (TLE) Infant Centers are immaculate, colorful, well equipped, safe environments. Parents feel self-assured and confident that their infant is being cared for in the most loving way. Each baby has his or her own crib. Cribs are NEVER shared at TLE. Parents are asked to place their shoes in a personal "shoe cubby" at the infant center entrance so that they can quickly slip on a foot cover before entering the infant center. Infant caregivers are required to wear TLE hospital scrubs. Infant caregivers never wear street clothes when caring for our infants. Keeping the infant environment sanitized and disinfected is important and we have put definitive procedures in place to insure cleanliness. Staff is required to adhere to all sanitary measures. Toys and cribs are disinfected nightly. Changing tables are disinfected after each individual diaper is changed. Caregivers are required to wear gloves and place a specially designed sanitary paper on the changing pad before each baby's diaper is changed. Diapers are placed in plastic bags before being deposited in a lined diaper pail which is emptied several times a day.

How can you find out if a school is accredited? There are two major resources to find out if a school is accredited: Some accrediting associations and their institutions appear in both the CHEA and USDE databases, while others appear in just one. How can you find out if a school is accredited by a reputable organization? Here is a list of all accrediting organizations recognized by CHEA or USDE. However, an accreditor being recognized doesn’t ensure that other schools will accept transfer credits from an institution accredited by that organization. Such is the case with the Distance Education Training Council (DETC), an accreditor that specializes in distance education. While many online schools are accredited by the DETC, and although the DETC is recognized by both the CHEA and the USDE, many colleges and universities don’t accept transfer credits from DETC-accredited schools. As such, the most universally reputable accreditation for an online school is one from one of the six major regional accreditors, which accredit schools in the following locations: North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA): Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Navajo Nation, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS): Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and several international locations. Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC): California and Hawaii, the territories of Guam, American Samoa, Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, the Pacific Basin and East Asia, plus areas of the Pacific and East Asia. Students are advised to plan out their educational course of action before enrolling and to check with schools to which they might transfer to determine their credit acceptance policies.

The aim is to reach one million children. By Tomoya Sonoda and David Youngmeyer An ongoing Back to Learning campaign in the Syrian Arab Republic has reached more than 400, 000 children, including Muhammad and Shaza – but much more help is needed. DAMASCUS, Syrian Arab Republic and AMMAN, Jordan, 31 October 2013 – A Back to Learning campaign in the Syrian Arab Republic has reached more than 400, 000 conflict-affected children with school bags and education supplies. Although the campaign has had much success and is ongoing, “[S]ecurity and communication difficulties continue to hamper access and limit the distribution of school supplies in some areas, ” says UNICEF Syrian Arab Republic Representative Youssouf Abdel-Jelil. Cooperation, for children Ongoing conflict has left almost 4, 000 schools – or around one in five – damaged, destroyed or sheltering internally displaced families. Some two million children in the country have been displaced. Some one million were believed to be out of school inside the Syrian Arab Republic during the last school year. In cooperation with the Ministry of Education and other partners around the country, UNICEF is supporting the Back to Learning campaign, which aims to reach one million conflict-affected primary school–aged children in all 14 governorates. Education supplies, which, in addition to school bags, include 5, 000 teaching–learning kits, 3, 000 recreation kits, and 800 early childhood education kits, have been delivered to Damascus, Homs, Idleb, Tartous, Ar-Raqqa, Deir ez Zour, Quneitra and Rural Damascus governorates. Back to Learning has been possible, in part, because of the generous support of Kuwait, which has provided more than US$3 million towards the campaign. © UNICEF Syrian Arab Republic/2013/Sonoda Displaced children continue their education beneath a UNICEF-provided tent classroom, in Tartous. The ongoing conflict has left almost 4, 000 schools – or about one in five – damaged, destroyed or sheltering internally displaced families. Essential supplies As part of the campaign, each child receives a UNICEF school bag that contains learning supplies: notebooks, ballpoint pens, pencils, erasers, colouring pencils and a set of rulers. For children displaced by the conflict, who may have left their homes in a hurry with little more than their clothing, these supplies are essential for them to continue their education. “I am happy to receive this bag, ” says Muhammad, 9, who fled Aleppo with his family a year ago and now goes to school in Tartous. “When I was in Aleppo, I had no chance to go to school. School was closed due to conflict.” Addressing the straining schools of Tartous Tartous is a relatively peaceful area in the west that has witnessed the arrival of waves of children and families displaced by fighting in governorates including Aleppo, Homs and Idleb.

Choosing a college can be hard, especially for students who want to study in a foreign country. With more than 18, 000 colleges and universities around the world to choose from, according to the International Association of Universities, the options for where to study are seemingly endless. While some students might relish that abundance, others can feel overwhelmed by the choices. These four questions can help students focus their search and calm their nerves. 1. Can I speak the language? It seems like an obvious question, but it is an essential question, says Aaron DeBono, education abroad adviser at the University of Melbourne. "The biggest drawcard is always the language of instruction, " DeBono says. "This is by far the most important factor being considered when students are choosing a study destination." Students don't necessarily have to speak a country’s primary language to study there, but they should narrow their search to schools that teach in a language they are comfortable with. "Just because they don't speak Swedish, for example, does not mean that they should not contemplate an exchange to Sweden, " DeBono says. "Many students are in fact surprised to learn that the further north one travels in Europe, the wider the range of subjects that are on offer to students in English." [Discover four free tools to help students improve their English skills.] 2. What are my career goals? It takes a mature student to ask, "What do I want to be doing in 10 years?" But that is precisely the kind of student who tends to study in a foreign country, says Elaine Vincent, former vice president of enrollment at the American University of Rome. "These students tend to have very specific career goals, and choose their college on that basis, " says Vincent, now an admissions coach with My College Planning Team. Focusing on the big picture can help students narrow their options to a country, city and college that can provide the academic programs, as well as the career and cultural experience, needed to reach their goals. Students interested in international diplomacy might steer their search toward countries that are hubs for the United Nations, such as Kenya, Switzerland and Austria, Vincent says. "Those who are interested in agricultural development may do well in Rome with a plan to seek an internship in one of three agencies housed in Rome, " she says. "Africa offers a wealth of opportunities to learn first-hand about microeconomic policy, gender equality or natural resources management."

Let's be real: How long has it been since you put on your CERT gear and practiced your CERT skills in a full-scale exercise, featuring realistically moulaged victim actors in an authentically damaged disaster site? At Lorton exercises, we can really make a mess and simulate "big and bad." Or, for our recent CERT graduates, how'd you like to test your skills in a disaster response scene that's 10 times bigger and more intense than what you went through? Does anyone else smell smoke? Join us Saturday, June 6, from 7AM to 3PM at the Lorton Training Site (home of Fairfax County's elite urban search and rescue team, Virginia Task Force 1) for a that will push your CERT training to the limit! Welcome to Fairfax County Urban Search and Rescue's Lorton Training Site. Used by professional first responders who need a realistically damaged urban disaster scene, the Lorton Training Site at the former Lorton Juvenile Detention Center provides a unique opportunity for CERTs to train in an authentic disaster scene. Views of the authentically damaged Lorton buildings. ! The more, the merrier! See the registration page for more info.) Does this bring back any memories? Reminder: It's just makeup. We're looking for responders and victim actors to play in the exercise (as well as a few more controllers, evaluators, and ham radio operators). We'd especially like to invite trained CERTs from other programs in the National Capital Region to participate as responders (so we can work together like we do during CERT CONs). Also new this year, especially for our Local Neighborhood CERT Teams: You can register and respond as a team. Just choose the "Create a team" or "Join a team" options at signup. (And don't worry if you're not on a team, or you want to work with CERTs from other jurisdictions - you can still sign up for the drill as an individual!) For only $7 (victim actors pay nothing), you'll receive breakfast and lunch from one of Fairfax County Fire & Rescue's Canteen trucks, as well as the opportunity to take an exclusive tour of the Lorton Training Site used by Virginia Task Force 1.
