50. <p>하지만 나를 감탄하게 한 건 그의 똑똑함이 아니었다. <strong>그의 기억력이었다.</strong> 그는 숫자를 참 잘 기억했다. 그리고 오랜 시간이 지나서도 숫자를 꽤 정확하게 떠올리는 능력이 있었다. 예를 들면 이랬다. “유저 증가율이 이번달에 20%라고 하는데, 지난달에는 24% 아니었던가요? 4%정도 감소한 원인이 뭐죠?” 또는 이랬다. “마케팅팀에서 2400만원 예산 집행을 해서 15%의 유저 증가가 있었구요, 지난번 1800만원을 집행했을 때에 비해 두 배의 효과가 있었습니다.”</p>

54. <p>그 외에도 나를 감탄하게 한 일들은 수없이 많았다. <strong>그리고 그 때마다, 그렇게 기억력이 높은 사람 아래에서 일한다는 건 어떤 기분일까. 얼마나 긴장을 하게 될까 생각했다.</strong> 실제로 마케팅실은 그렇게 기억력이 좋은 ‘똑똑한’ 사람들로 채워져 있었고, 회사에 많은 기여를 하고 있었다. <strong>특히 회의 진행이 효율적이었다.</strong> 일반적인 회사에서 회의 시간에 누가 뭔가를 질문하면, “아, 그건 지금 제가 기억이 안나는데, 나중에 자료를 찾아보고 보고드리겠습니다.” 라고 반응하는 경우가 참 많다. 사실 그 중 절반은 말만 하고 실제 보고하지도 않고, 또 절반은 질문을 한 사람이 질문한 사실을 잊어버려서 그냥 지나가버리기가 일쑤다. 그렇지만 그가 있는 회의에서는 그렇지 않았다. 대부분의 경우 즉시 숫자를 대답했고, 바로 기억하지 못하는 경우에는 즉시 그 숫자가 어디에 있는지 찾아내서 대답하고는 했다. 의사 결정이 훨씬 빠르고 효율적이었음은 두말할 필요도 없다.</p>

58. <p>전형적인 이과 성향이었던 나는, 학창 시절에 항상 원리를 바탕으로 한 수학과 과학은 자신이 있었지만, 역사, 지리, 사회, 도덕 등의 ‘암기’를 기반으로 한 과목에는 약했다. 그래서 나에게 ‘기억력’은 우선순위가 아니었고, 암기력이 좀 부족해도 논리가 강하면 상관없다고 생각했다.</p>

62. <p>하지만 그 마케팅실장의 기억력은 나를 감탄케 했고, 그 또한 나와 같은 전공인 ‘이과’였다는 사실을 알고 있기에, 나는 &#8216;이과이기 때문에&#8217; 라는 핑계거리는 사용할 수 없었다.</p>

66. <p>그 때부터 연습하기 시작했다. 숫자를 외우는 연습을 했다. 그리고 내가 지시한 일들을 기억하는 연습을 했다. 기억력과 암기력이 원래 나쁘다고 생각했던 나이지만, 계속 훈련을 하다보니, 그리고 그 훈련을 20년 이상 해오다보니, 이제 구체적인 내용을 꽤 정확하게 기억할 수 있게 되었다. 특히 회사 인수 금액 등 중요한 숫자들을 꽤나 정확하게 기억해서 시간이 지나도 쉽게 떠올려서 언급할 수 있게 되면 뿌듯함을 느낀다.</p>

70. <p>스타트업을 시작하고, 회사를 운영하게 되면서, 그 때부터 연습해온 ‘기억하는 능력’ 덕에 시간을 아끼고, 일을 빠르게 진행시키고, 올바른 결정을 내렸다고 느낄 때가 많다. <strong>그러면서, 좋은 기억력이 모든 리더에게 꼭 필요한, 그리고 필요함을 넘어서 매우 필수적인 자질이라고 확신을 가지게 되었다.</strong></p>

74. <p>상사가 하는 최악의 행동 중 하나는, 직원에게 일을 시켜놓고, 조사를 시켜놓고 자기가 잊어버리는 것이다. 처음엔 직원이 열심히 그 일을 한다. 그래서 결과를 보고한다. 그 사이에 상사가 이내 지시를 잊어버렸다는 것을 알면 힘이 다 빠진다. 그 다음에 상사가 또 일을 시킨다. 이번엔 대충 한다. 어차피 시간 조금 지나면 잊어버릴 것이므로. 어떤 경우엔 아예 일을 하지도 않고 시간이 좀 지나 상사가 지시한 내용을 잊어버리기만을 기다리기도 한다. 이런 회사에서 중요한 일들이 착착 진행될 수 있을까?</p>

78. <p>이렇게 기억력이 나쁜 (또는 기억을 굳이 하려고 하지 않는) 상사가 하는 또 하나의 행동이 있다. <strong>바로 부하직원 또는 비서에게 ‘메모’를 시키는 것이다.</strong> 직원은 그러면 필기 로봇이 된다. 비참한 일이다. 필기는 하지만 권한은 없다. 그가 하는 일은 필기한 내용을 상사에게 보내거나 (그러면 기억력이 나쁜 상사는 또 대충 읽고 넘긴다), 필기한 내용을 바탕으로 회의록을 정리해서 다른 부서와 공유하는 것이다. 생각해보라, 그렇게 어떤 직원이 보낸 회의록을 진지하게 대한 경험이 있는지. 상사가 직접 정리해서 공유한 내용이 아니면, 또는 상사가 그 회의 시간에 있었던 일들을 상세히 (적어도 다음 2주 동안에) 기억하지 않는다면, 회의록에 있는 내용의 90%는 시간이 지나면서 차차 잊혀지고, 장시간 회의에 소모한 시간은 점차 무의미해져가고 만다. 그리고 나서 다음 회의에 또 똑같은 내용을 다룬다. 그리고 그 내용의 90%는 다시 잊혀져간다.</p>

82. <p>지금부터 연습해보자. 기억력은 선천적인 능력이라 어느 정도 유전자에 의해 결정되긴 하지만, 얼마든 훈련에 의해, 그리고 도구의 도움을 받아 향상시킬 수 있다고 생각한다. 꾸준히 연습하면, 언젠가 자신의 기억력에 감탄하는 날이 올 것이다. (말은 이렇게 하지만 나도 사실 자신이 있는 영역은 아니다. 매우 외향적인 성격 탓에 만나는 사람들이 많다보니, 몇년 전에 만났던 사람을 기억하지 못하는 경우도 종종 생긴다. 너무 죄송하고 민망한 일이지만 &#8211; 이것도 좀 더 훈련을 통해 향상시켜보려 하고 있다.)</p>

167. <p>태어나서 처음 해 본 크루즈 여행 &#8211; 나이 든 사람들만 하는 건줄 알았는데, <strong>사실 어린 아이가 있는 가족이 하기에 정말 좋은 여행 방법</strong>이다. 실제로 어린 아이를 둔 가족들이 많이 보였다. 배 안에서 내가 제일 좋아했던 공간은 16층에 위치한 짐(Gym). 망망대해와 멀리 있는 섬을 바라보며 트레드밀에서 뛰는 기분은 최고다. 4월에 했던 1주일의 <a href="https://www.royalcaribbean.com">캐리비안 크루즈 여행</a>(플로리다 &#8211; 케이만 제도 &#8211; 자메이카 &#8211; 바하마스 &#8211; 코코 아일랜드)의 경험이 좋아서 11월에 또 <a href="https://www.msccruises.com/int">지중해 크루즈</a>에 다녀왔다. 바르셀로나에서 출발해서 마르세이유 &#8211; 제노아 &#8211; 로마 &#8211; 팔레르모 &#8211; 말타 &#8211; 를 거쳐 바르셀로나로 돌아오는 일정. 배에서 자고 먹는 것이 모두 해결되고 키즈 클럽도 잘 되어 있어 아이들도 좋은 시간을 보낼 수 있다. 배 안의 극장에서 매일 밤 하는 공연들도 볼 만했다. 앞으로도 종종 이런 방법으로 여행하게 될 것 같다.</p>

179. <p><strong>어린 시절부터 동경해 마지않던 회사로부터 갑자기 사외이사 제안을 받았을 때의 느낌이란</strong>, 그 기분이란. 올해 초, 에스엠이 큰 변화를 겪으면서 사외 이사 의석을 늘렸는데, 그 과정에서 추천을 받았다. 김규식 변호사/의장을 비롯해 이승민 파트너 변호사, 김태희 대표 변호사, 문정빈 고려대 교수와 <a href="https://economist.co.kr/article/view/ecn202302220064">함께 이사회에 합류했다</a>. 매달 있는 이사회에 참석하며 케이팝 제작 과정에 대해 많이 배웠고, 시가총액 2조원이 넘는 큰 회사가 어떻게 움직이는지 배웠다. 형식적인 거수기가 아니라 긴 토론을 거쳐서 결론을 내리는 정식 이사회를 만들기 위해 모두가 노력하고 있고, 그렇기에 이 일이 나에게 의미가 있다.</p>

203. <p>원래 꾸준히 운동에 관심을 가지고 건강한 패턴으로 살아왔음에도 불구하고 2022년 말에 했던 건강검진 지표가 맘에 안들어 <strong>식사와 생활 패턴을 확 바꾸었다</strong>. 탄수화물을 극적으로 줄이며 밥/빵/떡/면을 거의 안먹고(원래 바지락 칼국수를 그렇게 좋아했었더라는), 소고기 및 돼지고기도 특별한 식사가 아니라면 잘 먹지 않는다. 아침은 삶은 계란과 사과, 그리고 그릭 요거트, 점심은 참치 샐러드, 저녁은 다양한 종류의 한식을 먹는다. 매번 식사 후에는 운동하거나 걷고, 저녁에 펠로톤 자전거로(<a href="https://sungmooncho.com/2023/07/09/peloton/">펠로톤 예찬 글 참고</a>) 30분 정도의 강도 높은 운동을 하고, 일주일에 한 두번은 강한 근력운동을 했다. 그 결과, 10개월만에 거의 지방만으로 8kg이 빠졌고, 혈압도 낮아졌으며, 중성지방 및 간 수치가 크게 낮아졌다. 심뇌혈관 나이는 내 나이보다 7살이 더 낮게 나왔다.</p>

483. <p>솔직히 나는 애슐리가 쓴 버전이 더 재미있었고 유익했다. 월터 아이작슨은 물론 이 시대에 가장 영향력 있고 대단한 전기 작가이긴 하지만, 자신의 해석과 경험을 넣지 않아 책이 좀 드라이한 경향이 있다. 그 전에 썼던 스티브 잡스 책도 그랬고. 수많은 사람들의 증언과 고증을 통해, 최대한 객관적으로, 그리고 찬양이나 칭찬 없이 그 사람을 있는 그대로 (괴짜에 미치광이에 참을성 없고 신경질적인) 묘사하는 것은 좋은 점이었지만, 한편으로 그를 매우 가까이 대한 사람으로서, 진심으로 그 사람을 어떻게 생각하는지에 대한 내용은 빠져 아쉬움이 있다. 인간적인 면을 묘사하지 않는 것은 아니지만, 때로는 지나치게 인간적이어서 우리가 그들의 벌거벗은 모습을 직접 대면하게 만든다는 점은 좀 불편하기도 하고, 어떤 면에서는 &#8216;꾸며진 모습&#8217;이 더 익숙한 우리에게 많이 어색하기도 하다.</p>

531. <p>내가 차트메트릭 조직을 짜고 운영하는 철학과 유사한 면이 있어서 재미있었다. 많은 큰 회사가 그러하듯 &#8216;기획 -&gt; 디자인 -&gt; 개발 -&gt; QA&#8217;로 짜여진 제품 개발 과정을 나는 별로 좋아하지 않았다. 물론 제품이 없이 QA를 한다는 건 말이 안되고, 기획이나 디자인 없이 개발하는 것도 쉽지 않은 일이라 이 절차를 완전 무시할 수는 없지만, 그래도 나는 &#8216;엔지니어링&#8217;이 분리되지 않고 기획 또는 디자인과 융합되는 것을 항상 선호한다. 다시 말하면, 어떨 때는 (특히 회사 초기에는 더욱) 기획이나 디자인 없이 엔지니어링이 먼저 시작하도록 한다. 비록 &#8216;못생긴 제품&#8217;이 나올지라도 상관 없다. 나중에 얼마든지 개선할 기회가 있으니까. 기획과 디자인에 시간을 많이 쓴 후 개발에 들어가면, 가장 큰 문제가 기획과 디자인에 얽혀서 혁신을 할 기회를 놓칠 수 있다는 것이다. 물론 기획자와 디자이너가 누구냐에 따라 달리기도 하지만. 어쨌든, &#8216;기획자&#8217;가 혁신을 드라이브하기보다는 팀에서 제일 &#8216;똑똑한&#8217; 사람이 혁신을 드라이브하는 것이 맞다고 생각하고, 꽤 엔지니어가 팀에서 가장 똑똑한 경우가 꽤 많다.</p>

767. <p>그 결과는? &#8216;일은 일이고 개인은 개인이다&#8217; 라는 철학이 중요해진다. 회사가 아무리 거지 같아도, 일하는 환경이나 업무가 마음에 들지 않아도, 월급 통장에 꼬박 꼬박 돈만 들어오기만 하면 그만이라는 생각을 하게 된다. 그래서 &#8216;<strong>워라벨(work life balance)</strong>&#8216; 주의가 생겨난다. 어떻게든 &#8216;<strong>워크(work)는 줄이고 라이프(life)는 늘리자</strong>&#8216;라는 생각. 일은 일일 뿐이라며 일을 통해 버는 돈을 취미 활동에 올인하는 사람도 있다. 돈을 위해 일하는 사람을 비하하는 것이 아니고 취미 활동이 안좋다는 것도 아니다. 나 역시 한때는 돈을 위해 일했고, 그렇게 해서 번 돈이 내 꿈을 이루는 초석이 되었으니까. 그리고 또한, 일과 놀이가 적절히 균형을 이루는 삶도 중요하다. 다만, &#8216;돈을 벌기 위한 인생&#8217;을 살다보면 자신의 꿈을 이루는 날이 자꾸 미뤄지고, 어떤 불행한 경우엔 너무 늦을 때까지 이를 깨닫지 못하고 삶을 마감하는 경우도 있다는 것이다. 얼마나 안타까운 일인가.</p>

771. <p>전에도 언급했지만, 유재석 또는 신동엽 같은 방송인을 보다보면, 그들은 <strong>적어도 자신도 행복하고 다른 이들도 행복하게 하면서 돈도 많이 벌 수 있는 길을 찾았다는 점에서 운이 좋다</strong>는 생각을 한다. 물론 그들도 스트레스가 많을 것이다. 방송인이기 때문에 할 수 있는 일, 할 수 없는 일들의 제약도 많아서 일상 생활에 불편함도 있을 것이다. 불필요한 무고로 상처를 입기도 할 것이다. 하지만 이 모든 일들에도 불구하고 다시 일어서서 그 자리를 지키고 우리를 즐겁게 하는 것은, 그들이 진심으로 자신의 일을 사랑하고 즐기고 있기 때문이라고 생각한다. 적어도 그들은, 눈을 감는 순간 &#8216;다른 인생을 살았다면 좋았을 것&#8217;이라는 생각은 안하지 않을까?</p>

820. <p>내가 애플이나 테슬라 제품을 좋아하는 이유가 하드웨어와 소프트웨어가 어느 하나만으로는 의미가 없도록 기가 막히게 조화를 이루어서인데, <strong>펠로톤도 그런 면에서 애플 제품을 연상시킨다</strong>. 이런 아름다운 제품을 사용하다보면 그 제품을 만든 사람들의 노력과 철학이 느껴져서 기분이 좋다. 계속 자전거 안장 위에 앉고 싶도록, 그리고 일단 시작하면 중간에 포기하지 않도록 하는 요소가 세 가지 있는데, 천재적인 디자인이라고 부를 만하다.</p>

824. <p><strong>첫째, 대시보드</strong>. 자전거 운동에서 가장 중요한 두 가지 요소는 속도(cadence / rpm)와 저항성(resistance)이다. 그 두 가지의 결합으로 시간당 칼로리 소모량이 정해진다. 당연히 펠로톤 대시보드에는 이 두 가지가 항상 표시되어 있는데, 수업을 하는 동안 강사가 목표 케이던스와 저항성 범위를 준다. <strong>내가 그 목표 안에 들어가면 노란색으로 바뀌고, 벗어나면 흰 색으로 바뀐다</strong>. 이게 아주 미세한 건데, 양쪽을 같이 노란색 범위 안에 들게 하기 위해서 노력을 하지 않을 수가 없게 만든다. 내가 범위 안에 들었는지 안들었는지 강사가 실시간으로 볼 수 있는 것도 아니고 다른 펠로톤 멤버들이 보는 것도 아닌데도 이 안에 들도록 노력하게 만든다는 것. 별 것 아닌 것 같지만 기가 막힌 디자인이다.</p>

832. <p><strong>둘째, 리더보드</strong>. 케이던스(회전 속도)와 리지스턴스(저항)의 조합으로 출력값(output)이 달라지는데, 이 수치가 얼마나 빨리 올라가느냐에 따라 내 순위가 정해진다. 실시간 수업을 참여하면 동시에 자전거를 타는 사람들과 실시간으로 비교가 되고, 녹화 수업을 참여하면 그동안 그 수업을 들었던 모든 사람들과 비교가 되며 순위를 보여준다. <strong>이게 정말 강력한 동기부여 요소이다</strong>. 내 바로 앞에서 가는 사람을 따라잡기 위해 노력을 하게 되고, 내가 따라잡으면 그 사람은 다시 힘을 줘서 나를 앞지르고.. 그 사람에게 하이파이브를 보내고 또 받는다. 친구 맺기를 할 수도 있다. 여기에 또 한 가지 미세한 디자인이 들어 있는데, 자전거를 타다가 일시 정지를 하는 시간이 1분 이상이 되면 내 순위가 더 이상 보이지 않고 기록되지 않는다. 그럼 좀 억울한 생각이 드니 결국 끝까지 하게 된다. 일단 시작하면 물 마실 틈도 없이 끝까지 하게 되는 것. 이보다 더 좋은 운동 효과가 있을까.</p>

854. <p>펠로톤을 시작하면서 이제 시간이 없다든지 날씨가 안좋다든지 하는 핑계는 댈 수가 없게 됐다. 새벽 5시에 할 때도, 밤 11시에 할 때도 있는데, 에어팟을 꼽고 30분간 온 몸이 땀으로 흠뻑 젖도록 운동하고 나서 찬 물로 샤워하고 나면 기분이 최상이다. 아, 또 자전거를 타고 싶어졌다.</p>

1005. <p>사실 꽤 자주 받는 질문인데, 수많은 시간동안 고민했던 주제인 만큼 간단히 대답하기는 어렵다. 그래도 한 가지 제일 중요했던 요소를 꼽자면, &#8220;<strong>내가 이 일을 10년 동안 해도 지루하지 않을 것인가?</strong>&#8221; 였다. 이전에 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3F8I0GNuFg">EO 인터뷰</a>에서도 여러 번 강조했던 이야기이고, 지금도 자주 생각하는 주제인데, 이 세상에 한 가지 일을 10년간 지속적으로 하는 사람은 생각보다 그렇게 많지 않다. 게다가 10년간 별로 소득이나 발전이 없어보이면 더욱 그렇다. 우리는, 누군가가 위대해지고, 유명해지고, 뛰어난 실력을 가질 때가 되어서야 그 사람들을 알아보는 경우가 많다. 그래서 얼핏 생각하면 그 사람들은 원래 재능이 뛰어나서 그렇게 유명해졌거나, 그 자리에 올라가게 되었다는 생각을 하기 쉽다. 어제는 학생들이 이해하기 쉽도록 <a href="https://ko.wikipedia.org/wiki/NewJeans">뉴진스</a>의 예를 들었는데, 이제 겨우 15세에서 19세의 나이로 구성된 밴드가 <a href="https://namu.wiki/w/NewJeans">데뷔한 지 1년도 되지 않아</a> 한국 전체를 들었다 놨다 하는, 그리고 이제 세계에서도 알려지기 시작하는 유명한 가수가 되었다는 사실만을 들으면, 마치 1~2년만에 그 정도의 재능이 만들어진 것처럼 생각하게 되기 쉽다. 하지만 방시혁, 소성진, 민희진 대표가 이런 걸 그룹을 구상하며 <a href="https://m.blog.naver.com/ysyangel59/221638708994">&#8216;플러스 글로벌 오디션&#8217;을 2019년 말에 16개 도시에서 개최</a>하며 재능 있는 탤런트들을 발굴한 것이 2019년 말의 일임을 생각하면, 데뷔 전 준비에만 3년이 걸렸다는 뜻이고, 다섯 명의 멤버들은 그 오디션에서 합격하기 전에 이미 최소한 7년은 노력하지 않았을까 하는 것이 내 생각이다. 다니엘은 7살 때부터 이미 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jV1vSVgLSj4">레인보우 유치원에 출연</a>했고, 가장 막내인 혜인도 2017년에 이미 키즈플래닛 등에 출연하고 있었다.</p>
