46.
The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum in Long Island City recently announced that David Huang’s “Hands Toward the Universe” has triumphed in its third annual Open Call for Artist Banners.

 47.
Huang’s creation will adorn the museum’s outdoor spaces from May 2024 until May 2025. His interpretation of this year’s theme, “love and labor,” impressed the judges, earning him the top spot amid a field of remarkable entries.

 48.
Runners-up Jacqueline Qiu and Derek Zheng also showcased exceptional talent in this year’s competition.

 50.
Launched in 2021, the Open Call aims to spotlight and uplift emerging AAPI artists from across New York City’s five boroughs, aligning with the museum’s commitment to fostering community engagement through the arts.

 51.
This year’s theme draws inspiration from Isamu Noguchi’s designs for public spaces—such as gardens, plazas and playgrounds—which seamlessly blend into communal life, enriching public experiences.

 52.
Each finalist brought a unique perspective to the table. David Huang, a Taiwanese migrant and Brooklyn-based illustrator, uses his art to navigate and express his identity and experiences. Jacqueline Qiu, a multidisciplinary artist from New York, merges Eastern and Western art philosophies through her textile work. Derek Zheng, a filmmaker and illustrator residing in Queens, explores narrative depth through sequential imagery.

 89.
On May 12, 24th Street between 38th and 39th Avenue will be closed to traffic for the pedestrian-friendly outing.

 90.
Activities at the four-hour event will range from cookie decorating with the health-conscious Little Chef Little Cafe, to chalk mural making with Queens Collaborative, a community organization that hosts Craft Club and a second-hand art supply shop, as part of its effort to make creative practices accessible to all. Magician Nathan Thompson will also perform a show of tricks.

 91.
For grub, there will be hot dogs and veggie dogs cooked by performer and solar cooking enthusiast Steven Wendt. He uses the sun’s rays, giant Fresnel lenses and a rotating spit to cook real hot dogs. Popcorn and drinks will also be available.

 92.
“The Chocolate Factory Theater is a community space with artists at its center. We are incredibly excited to get to know our neighbors and make new friends and supporters by opening our doors wide. 93.
Children can also attend a Drag Queen Story Hour, which includes readings in English and Spanish. 94.
Starting at 3 p.m., DJ LIIIAM will host a special request dance party, with songs suggested by attendees throughout the event. Although his set will only last 30 minutes, he will invite everyone to participate and dance it out together.

 95.
There will also be a screening of “A Cake For Me” by Yuby Hernandez, a Dominican-American filmmaker who follows the artistic paths of a director and her mother through the lens of cake. 120.
Last November, when New York Mets owner Steve Cohen and Queens community leaders unveiled the proposal for Metropolitan Park, local restaurant owner Manji Singh was all in.

 121.

Photo courtesy of Queens Future LLC

 122.
To Singh, the owner of Jackson Diner in Jackson Heights on 74th Street, the $8 billion proposal to transform the 50 acres of asphalt around Citi Field into a sports and entertainment park seemed like an idea whose time has come.

 123.
The list of amenities attached to the proposed park reads like the greatest hits from a business owner’s wish list: a music venue, food hall, park, waterfront development, casino and hotel and conference center. In other words, life — and foot traffic.

 124.
“It will significantly increase traffic in the wider community and help small and large businesses alike,” said Singh.

 125.
Singh’s view is one with a wide lens. A second-generation restaurateur, Singh inherited his business from his father, who immigrated to the United States in the 1970’s from Punjab India. In 1983, the senior Mr. Singh purchased American Diner in Jackson Heights, a busy breakfast, lunch and dinner joint on 74th Street.

 126.
Mr. Singh added Indian dishes to the menu, and slowly, as the neighborhood became more Indian, the American fare disappeared. He adopted the name Jackson Diner and passed it down to his son and it’s been a mainstay of the neighborhood ever since.

 127.
Their North Indian blend of curries and tandooris have attracted marquee names through its doors — Hillary Clinton, Harrison Ford and Sly Stallone, to name just a few.

 128.
The way Singh sees it, Metropolitan Park will add considerably more “sizzle” to the area, a year-round entertainment destination for locals and tourists alike. “More people coming to Queens to enjoy its diverse cuisine and ethnic heritage is a positive development,” he said. “In my experience, baseball games and tennis venues next door have increased restaurant traffic to my restaurant. Having events year round will further benefit every business in the area.”

 129.
To get to this proposal stage for Metropolitan Park took a lot of time. Over the last three years, Steve Cohen, alongside fellow investor Hard Rock International, have met with community groups, elected officials, Mets fans and those who live and work in the surrounding neighborhoods — business owners like Singh.

 130.
There have been 15 community workshops, hundreds of meetings with local leaders and over 40,000 door-to-door conversations with neighbors. Hundreds of ideas have been bandied about.

 131.
“Travel is a good source of revenue for Queens, especially considering that the whole 50 acres of land is going to be developed,” said Singh, who added: “There is no place in Queens to go for what is being proposed at Metropolitan Park. People must travel to Belmont or Manhattan, or further for entertainment. Now, it’s in their backyard.”

 132.
Quick facts about Metropolitan Park

 133.
● An investment of $8 billion
134. ● Nearly 15,000 good-paying permanent and construction jobs
166.
The number of vehicle thefts across northern and southern Queens increased during the 28-day period from April 1-28, compared to the same period of time last year, according to the latest crime stats released by the NYPD Monday. At the same time, grand larcenies were down across the borough.

 167.
Over the course of the 28-day period, vehicle thefts in northern Queens went up 24.3%, from 169 reported cases in 2023 to 210 in 2024.

 168.
Both the 109th and 114th Precincts experienced the most significant rise in vehicle thefts in northern Queens. The 109th Precinct, which covers Flushing, Queensboro Hill, Whitestone, College Point and Bay Terrace, had reported cases jump from 29 last year to 45 this year. 170.
The 109th Precinct saw the deepest drop in grand larcenies over the 28-day period, with reported cases falling from 123 last year to 104 this year.

 171.
In southern Queens, vehicle thefts increased 15.2% over the same 28-day period, compared to the previous year, from 125 in 2023 to 144 in 2024.

 172.
The 106th Precinct, which covers Howard Beach, Lindenwood and Ozone Park, experienced the biggest jump in vehicle thefts during the 28-day period. Reported cases there went up from 9 last year to 22 this year.

 173.
Grand larcenies in southern Queens decreased 10.8% over the 28-day period, from 260 in 2023 to 232 in 2024.

 174.
The 106th Precinct had the sharpest decline in grand larcenies at the same time as having the biggest increase in vehicle thefts. Reported grand larcenies there fell from 54 last year to 45 this year.

 177.
The total number of reported major crimes – murder, rape, robbery, felony assault, burglary, grand larceny, and vehicle thefts – remained mostly static, with slight increases across both northern and southern Queens during the 28-day period compared to the previous year. In northern Queens, major crimes increased 0.74%, from 1,221 last year to 1,230 this year. At the same time, southern Queens experienced a 0.87% increase, from 807 last year to 814 this year.

 205.
Community members and leaders gathered at Paseo Park in Jackson Heights Friday to celebrate the unveiling of a new outdoor mural installation.

 206.

Photo courtesy of Council Member Krishnan’s office.

 207.
The mural, known as “Painting Paseo: 26 Blocks of Joy,” is the largest outdoor mural installation in the borough. It was created by 26 different Queens-based artists, each adopting a city block of the open street. Each artist applied their own style to their granite cube, using a coordinated color palette to ensure the final work was a cohesive gallery walk.

 209.
Among those present for the unveiling were Council Member Shekar Krishnan, Alliance for Paseo Park Board Chair Luz Maria Mercado, Make the Road New York Deputy Director Becca Telzak and artist and Epicenter NYC Co-Founder Nitin Mukul.

 211.
This project was made possible thanks in large part to a grant provided by Krishnan through the NYC DOT Art Arteventions program. The project was also produced by the Alliance for Paseo Park, in collaboration with Epicenter NYC, Make the Road New York, South Asian Youth Action and The 34th Ave. Open Streets Coalition.

 212.

Photo courtesy of Council Member Krishnan’s office.

 213.
“We must continue to reimagine our streets. As the council member and chairman of the City Council’s Parks Committee, I’m proud of the activists in our community who’ve spent two decades fighting for public space from Diversity Plaza to Travers Park to Paseo Park,” Krishnan said. “I’m proud to have funded this project and collaborated with Alliance for Paseo Park, Make the Road New York, Epicenter and other community organizations. Public art unites us, enhances safety by signaling that this space belongs to the people and brings us closer to making Paseo Park a permanent public space for all to enjoy. Seeing color and vibrancy in Paseo Park, reflecting the diversity of our community, is crucial.”

 214.

Council Member Krishnan speaks during the unveiling of the mural. 215.
The mural is meant to reflect the diversity of the Jackson Heights community. This is also reflected through the backgrounds of the artists, as they span four separate generations and various cultural backgrounds. Some artists are Queens natives, while others are newcomers. Some of the artists are recent immigrants, while others have cultural backgrounds from countries like Bangladesh, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, India, Armenia, Japan and more. They range from experienced muralists like Zeehan Wazed, to graphic designers, a storyboard artist and even a local middle schooler.

 217.
“The Open Street known as Paseo Park has made 34th Avenue safer, more vibrant and joyful,
218. and gained notoriety as a world-class expression of public space,” Rodriguez said. “The 26 Blocks of Joy being finalized this month unifies the 1.3-mile corridor and perfectly demonstrates the energy and enjoyment Paseo Park brings to the community. I would like to thank Council Member Krishnan, the Alliance for Paseo Park and Make the Road New York for their support of this captivating NYC DOT Art project.”

 219.

Photo courtesy of Council Member Krishnan’s office.

 220.
Among the designs included in the mural are a three-dimensional interactive map of the park, a three-dimensional model of a Vintage VW bus, a guide to local birds spotted at the park, a DJ stand where kids can spin records, a tribute to the dogs of Paseo Park and ginkgo leaves swaying in the wind.

 222.
“This project, with artists from across Queens is an important step toward our mission to safeguard Paseo Park as permanent public space for generations to come,” Mercado said. “Like this mural project, the process of creating our shared park must be community-led and draw from the diverse backgrounds and experiences of Jackson Heights neighbors.”

 223.

Photo courtesy of Council Member Krishnan’s office.

 224.
The artists for this mural were chosen based on an open call last fall. Those who were chosen spent the winter months designing and painting a single granite cube. The final result from this is an outdoor gallery walk showcasing the diversity of all 26 artists across the 26 blocks.

 225.

(Left to right) Organizer Dawn Siff and artists Amethyst Monet, Zeehan Wazed, Afzal Hossain, Kirsten Magnani, Nitin Mukul, Ondine Crispin, Damaris Chamorro and NYC DOT’s Leah Rosofsky pose next to Wazed’s mural. 226.
“As a participating artist and co-organizer of this ambitious undertaking, I am genuinely thrilled to see our open street transformed by this labor of love from the Queens arts community.” Mukul said. “This project, the formation of Paseo Park and the founding of Epicenter NYC were all in some way connected to helping our neighbors navigate the pandemic, and frankly demonstrate the resilience to make the neighborhood even better than before.”

 227.

Photo courtesy of Council Member Krishnan’s office.

 228.
“As our neighborhoods are often struggling with lack of open space, we are thrilled to be part of making these 26 blocks filled with stunning mural installations a reality,” Telzak said. “The Paseo Park is a crucial open space for our communities to be able to enjoy walking and exercising through the streets of Queens with friends and family while embracing the mural created by diverse artists.”

 257.
A persistent panhandler was punched out by an angry commuter on board a northbound E train at the Queens Plaza subway station on Sunday, Apr. 21.

 258.
Police from the 108th Precinct in Long Island City and Transit District 20 reported that the assault occurred just after 8 p.m., when a 55-year-old woman approached an unidentified female, who struck the victim multiple times in the face with a closed fist, causing pain and bruising. The assailant ran off the subway station at Jackson Avenue and Queens Boulevard in an unknown direction.

 259.
According to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation, the victim had asked her attacker for money repeatedly and the assailant grew annoyed with the harassment and moved to another car.

 260.
When the beggar followed her into the next car, that is when the fists flew. The victim refused medical attention at the scene and the angry commuter remains at large.

 261.
The NYPD released a surveillance photo of the suspect as she came through the Queens Plaza turnstile and described her as having a medium complexion with a medium build, approximately 30 to 40 years of age, 165 pounds with black curly hair. 287.
The Hunters Point Parks Conservancy (HPPC), a non-profit organization that helps manage Long Island City’s waterfront parks, is calling on the city to provide a multi-purpose sports facility for local schools and residents as it looks to complete the massive Hunters Point South affordable housing development.

 288.
The City’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) plans to develop the two remaining city-owned parcels of land on the Long Island City waterfront – Parcels D and E – and is hosting a Community Visioning Workshop on Wednesday, May 1, from 6-8 p.m. at Sunnyside Community Services at 43-31 39th St.

 291.
In February, the HPD announced plans to build up to 900 apartments on Parcel E, with at least 60% of units earmarked to be affordable.

 292.
Parcel E sits just north of the Gotham Point complex where the Newtown Creek meets the East River and west of the massive Malt Drive development. It is one of seven city-owned sites that makes up the Hunters Point South development, which covers a 30-acre area along the Long Island City waterfront.

 293.
The city has developed five of the seven sites, building more than 3,000 units, commercial retail space, and community facilities. Parcels D and E are the only sites yet to be developed, and the city has announced that it is ready to build them.

 294.
The city is set to issue two separate request-for-proposals (RFP), one for each of the two sites.

 295.
HPPC, which advocates for the green spaces along the Long Island City waterfront, is calling on the HPD to develop Parcels D and E in unison to ensure that affordable housing and recreational space are included in the development.

 296.
HPPC President Rob Basch urged members of the community to attend Wednesday’s meeting to demand that active sports space be included in the development of Hunters Point South.

 297.
“They (the HPD) say they want to have a visioning session, that they want to hear what the community wants. I think they’ll hear that the community needs active sports space,” Basch said. “We need an active sports space, not a property with a courtyard in the middle where 10 people can sit and read a book. That’s not what we’re looking for.”

 298.
Basch noted that Long Island City boasts the fastest-growing population in the city. He added that Long Island City’s parks and green spaces have not kept pace with the rapid rise in population, pointing to a 2021 Open Spaces Profile from Partnership for Parks that ranked the district 57 out of 59 in New York for parks and open spaces.

 299.
“We all recognize the need for more affordable housing. However, Long Island City and particularly the Hunters Point area has done more than its share to address these issues,” Basch said.

 300.
“Our council district is ranked 57th out of 59 districts in terms of the percentage of parks and green spaces in our community. In order to have a healthy, growing, sustainable and happy community we need more parks and green spaces.”

 301.
Basch said there are three schools situated within two blocks of Parcel E, adding that school children are currently forced to play on the Oval, a multi-function green space located in Hunters Point South Park.

 302.
“The Oval is not adequate. It’s not really a sports field and to have three classes playing flag football is not appropriate,” Basch said. “My feeling is that if you get a nice sports field in there, the schools will be able to use it during the day, and then at night and on weekends, it will be available for community use.

 303.
“In the overall picture, if you don’t have essential green spaces, you’re not going to have a healthy growing community. Kids need a place to run. Running around the Oval is not really sufficient,” Basch added. “An indoor gym is nice, but being outdoors in the fresh air is essential.”

 304.
HPPC said in a statement that the Hunters Point area has “done more than its fair share” to address the issue of affordable housing in the city and said the neighborhood “urgently” needs recreational space.

 305.
“We encourage HPD to think creatively on how both Parcels can be considered in unison to provide the housing and recreational space that is urgently needed,” HPPC said in a statement.

 306.
“We know how essential parks are to mental and physical health, and we cannot have a healthy growing community without the appropriate parks and green spaces. We now have an opportunity to help correct some of these past shortages. New and existing residents deserve access to safe, clean, and welcoming open space.”

 307.
The HPD’s announcement of plans to develop Parcel E in February coincided with its study finding that affordable apartme

 308.
gives us a great opportunity to make up lots of ground in our fight to create the housing our city desperately needs,” HPD Commissioner Adolfo Carrión Jr. said on Feb. 8.

 309.
The planned development of Parcel E is part of the HPD’s efforts to plan affordable housing projects on 24 public sites by the end of 2024.

 310.
“We look forward to working with community residents to craft a vision for this site and see that vision come to fruition,” Carrión Jr. added.

 331.
Dozens of Sunnyside residents and community leaders came together Monday morning to celebrate women’s history and to honor one of the neighborhood’s most influential figures—the late Lily Gavin—at the first annual Lily Gavin Memorial Sunnyside Women’s History Breakfast Celebration.

 332.
The event, held at Sunnyside Community Services, paid tribute to Gavin, referring to her as the “mother of the Sunnyside BID,” whose efforts helped form the organization and have left an indelible mark on the neighborhood.

She was a founding member of the Sunnyside BID and, at one point, led the Sunnyside Chamber of Commerce. She was also responsible for raising money to repair the Sunnyside Arch sign years ago.

 335.
Dirk McCall, the executive director of the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District, spearheaded the celebration. The event featured musical performances and discussions of the vital role women have played in shaping the area. Pete’s Grill provided the food.

 336.
Special honors went to four notable local figures. The first award named after Lily Gavin was given to Debra Markell-Kleinert, the long-serving district manager of Community Board 2.

 408.
His father’s struggle with the incurable disease, which affects almost 1 million people in the country, inspired him to participate in the fundraising event. Amenn says that his father’s inability to work due to his disability has also taken an emotional toll on him.

 409.
“Every day, I see him make an effort to try to get better by making sure he is going to his doctor’s appointments, working out, and doing what he can to make sure we don’t view him as weak,” Amann said. “Seeing him struggle with it, and I’m always with him because he is disabled now, is hard.”

 410.
Come May 4, Amenn will join hundreds of others in a one-of-a-kind experience where participants climb up and down the stadium steps serpentine-style until the finish line. The annual event is also held at Gillette Stadium in Boston and Oracle Park in San Francisco.

 411.
To be able to climb, participants must raise at least $250 that goes towards finding a cure. But Amenn set an ambitious goal of raising $6,000, and is very close to reaching it.

 412.
His team, “Queens Finest,” which is made up of two of his friends who have been supportive throughout the difficult journey, has already raised over $5,550, making them some of the top fundraisers for this year’s climb.

 413.
The trio work together at Donovan’s Pub in Woodside and say they’ve bonded like brothers over the years. Amenn noted that his friends have been a crucial support system for his family.

 414.
“It’s definitely hard watching my dad with this disease, but what gives me hope is the increase in awareness that is happening,” he explained. “I’m sure the more that we can get the word out there, and the more research that’s conducted, maybe it can be one of those things of the past.”

 440.
The Port Authority announced on Monday a historic milestone in the ongoing $19 billion transformation of JFK International Airport, where a record $2.3 billion in contracts have been awarded to Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBE).

 441.

Photo courtesy of the Port Authority

 442.
The JFK redevelopment also demonstrates a significant focus on working with local contractors, awarding more than $950 million in contracts to Queens-based businesses to date.

 443.

Photo courtesy of the Port Authority

 444.
“When we embarked on this historic, $19 billion public-private effort to transform JFK into a world-class international gateway, we pledged that the economic opportunities generated at the airport would flow fairly to the neighborhoods surrounding the airport,” Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton said. “Working with our private partners at JFK and with our JFK Redevelopment Community Advisory Council, we have turned that pledge into economic reality for hundreds of MWBEs and local businesses.”

 445.

Port Authority Executive Director Rick Cotton announced that almost $1 billion in contracts will be going to MWBEs. Photo courtesy of the Port Authority

 446.
With Monday’s announcement, JFK surpassed the LaGuardia Airport redevelopment, which set the previous New York State record for MWBE participation in a public-private project with $2.2 billion in contracts awarded.

 447.

Queens Borough President Donovan Richards greets Port Authority executive director Rick Cotton with a hug on Monday as he announced nearly $1 billion in contracts for Queens-based MWBEs. Photo courtesy of Port Authority

 448.
“The redevelopment of Kennedy Airport is about so much more than new gates and terminals. It’s about upward mobility and pathways to prosperity for thousands of Queens residents from historically marginalized communities who call the airport their workplace,” Queens Borough President Donovan Richards said. “Since ground was first broken, this project has been of, for and by Queens, and never has that been clearer than today, as we break MWBE participation records.”

 449.
Richards co-chairs the Community Advisory Council with Congressman Gregory Meeks.

 450.
“I understand the importance of creating wealth-building and entrepreneurial opportunities for individuals who have historically faced barriers,” Meeks said. “This more than $2.3 billion milestone emphasizes the commitment of the JFK Redevelopment project to drive economic growth that is beneficial to New Yorkers. Most importantly, this development continues to make key investments into local communities not only in Queens but across the state.”

 451.
As the $19 billion project moves forward, additional contracts with MWBE firms will be awarded to meet the Port Authority’s goal of 30% MWBE participation for the agency’s capital projects, consistent with Governor Kathy Hochul’s nation-leading goals for MWBE utilization in state projects.

 452.
“New York remains committed to providing travelers with a premiere experience that includes world-class amenities and record involvement by local minority- and women-owned businesses while ensuring just that,” Hochul said. “This transformative project uplifts these businesses and deepens investments in the community while bolstering the state workforce.”

 453.
Currently, 680 MWBEs have been awarded contracts at JFK with more than 200 businesses based in Queens.

 454.
“This is an impressive milestone, with much more work still to come,” Greater Jamaica Development Corporation President and CEO Justin Rogers said. “While the redevelopment is not complete, the positive impact is being realized.”

 455.
The economic empowerment is impacting the entire borough.

 456.
“We have long advocated for the inclusion of MWBE participation during construction at JFK Airport, and this accomplishment signifies not only progress but also the potential for continued growth within our local business community,” Queens Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tom Grech said.

 457.
Since its inception in 2018, the Community Advisory Council has been working with the Port Authority and its private partners to expand community outreach efforts and develop community-focused programs. This includes a commitment to a 30% MWBE contracting goal in all categories of work.

 458.
“From the start of the redevelopment of JFK International Airport, it has always been clear that M/WBE firms, local small businesses, and Southeast Queens residents can contribute and benefit from the opportunities generated by this $19 billion project,” Speaker Adrienne Adams said. “I look forward to the continued partnership with my colleagues in government that ensures the investments from this project reach our Southeast Queens community and advance more equitable contracting.”

 459.
Assemblymember Alicia Hyndman said the record-breaking milestone underscores the importance of equitable opportunities in major infrastructure projects.

 460.
“As an Assemblywoman representing Queens, I’m proud to see local businesses thriving, with nearly $1 billion in contracts awarded to Queens-based girls,” Hyndman said. “This achievement not only surpasses past milestones but sets a precedent for future developments, ensuring that MWBE participation continues to break records as we work towards the substantial completion of JFK’s redevelopment in 2028.”

 461.
As someone who worked for the JFK Redevelopment Program before entering politics, Council Member Nantasha Williams said she was proud to see the progress and the significant impact it’s making on Southeast Queens.

 462.
“With ongoing construction and continued engagement with MWBE firms, we’re set to surpass even greater heights before the project’s completion in 2028,” Williams said. “This milestone not only highlights the success of the JFK redevelopment but also serves as a testament to the power of collaboration and inclusivity in driving economic growth and prosperity.”
