Let’s get started. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">What is a blog?</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">A blog is an online journal where people can express their views and opinions. It is also used for education, information and sales. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Today the main purpose of blogging is connecting to your relevant audience, boosting traffic to your website, and monetizing it. Once your blog gains fans and an audience it is possible to sell your own products and services. You can also run ads on your blog to make money, but that isn’t highly recommended. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why are you starting a blog?</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">It is important to know your ‘why’. Without a solid ‘why’ it might not work. Your intentions should be clear from the beginning. So take some time and figure out the message and purpose of your blog. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Check out my extensive guide on <a href="http://thedigitalrabbit.com/successful-freelancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how to be a freelancer</a> and how blogging is an integral part of it. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Now let’s dive right in!</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">1. Select the Perfect Niche</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Once your intentions are clear and you’re ready to start, the first thing is to come up with a topic and then narrow it down to a niche. If you’re already an expert in a particular field then that’s a great start. You can also choose a topic you are most drawn to and learn as much as you can about it. This process can take place while you start. You don’t have to be an expert to start. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">2. Pick a Domain Name</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">After you have selected your niche you need to pick a domain name that is relevant to your topic, short and easy to remember. Your domain name is your unique address on the internet. Domain names ending in dot com are recommended. If that is not available you can go for other extensions as well. Before buying a domain name consider which host or platform you will be using. More on that later. The reason being, some hosts or platforms will give you domain names for free for the first year. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">3. Get Web Hosting</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Selecting good hosting is one of the most important<a href="https://getflywheel.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> </a>decisions you will make. Do your research thoroughly. The performance and functionality of your blog depend on your host. You don’t want to lose traffic because your site keeps going down. But some don’t. So check what you’re getting. An SSL certificate is important as Google will drastically drop the rank of your website if you don’t have one. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">5. Choose a Blogging Platform</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">At this stage, you’ll want to decide what platform you want to use to build your website. The most popular platform (also known as Content Management System or CMS) is WordPress.org.</p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Wix and Squarespace are other popular options that are much simpler to use. Research them all and pick the one most suited to your need and budget. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">6. Choose the Perfect Theme</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Choosing the perfect theme is usually a fun process. The design of your theme, fonts and colours is what will make or break user experience on your website. How the information is laid out is also another factor to consider. When in doubt go with the simpler option. Also, make sure the theme you select is mobile responsive. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">7. Start Writing Content</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Now that you’re all set up, start writing. Fill in your About and Contact pages. Customise your Home page. And start writing blog posts. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">When you write blog posts make sure you research the content, do keyword research and get your SEO Title and Meta Description right. Download an SEO plugin, preferably Yoast SEO. You will need to prepare content for the <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://moz.com/learn/seo/title-tag" target="_blank">SEO titles</a> and <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://moz.com/learn/seo/meta-description" target="_blank">description tags</a> of each page. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Use images where required. Make sure you fill in the alt text when you use an image. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">It is best to plan your content in advance and set up a schedule you can follow. Write one blog post everyday. Create original and quality content.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">8. Promote your Content</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Start submitting your blog to search engines. It will help get your blog indexed. For Google use Google Webmasters. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Use bookmarking sites like Scoop.it and Reddit to submit your blog every time you write a new post. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Use social media like Facebook, Instagram and Youtube to get the word out there and promote your blog. Monetize your Blog</h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">After you have gained considerable followers and subscribers you can think about monetizing your blog. Remember your blog is not always about making money. Many clients also tell us that they hesitated to find remote work because every ‘opportunity’ required upfront investment. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">And we tell them that, with very few exceptions, you should never, ever pay to work from home. Period. That bears repeating — Don’t pay to work from home. Those are usually scams. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Stay Away From Multi-Level Marketing</h2> <p class="has-large-font-size">So-called “opportunities” to work from home that require you to pay a fee or cost money are scams. The biggest culprits are those disguised as network marketing, multi-level marketing (MLM) or direct sales. But they are pyramid schemes that I highly recommend you never sign up for. Not only are they costly and time-consuming, but there are so many better options to create a remote career that won’t make you pay. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size"> <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="https://www.ftc.gov/sites/default/files/documents/public_comments/trade-regulation-rule-disclosure-requirements-and-prohibitions-concerning-business-opportunities-ftc.r511993-00008%C2%A0/00008-57281.pdf" target="_blank">The Case Against Multi-Level Marketing</a> highlighted the dreadful state of MLM. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Based on 15 years of research, it was found that: </p> <ul><li>100% of MLM companies are recruitment-driven </li> <li>99% of recruits lose money</li> <li>Less than 1% of MLM participants make any profit </li></ul> <p class="has-large-font-size">The study concluded that:</p> <blockquote class="wp-block-quote has-text-align-left is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow"><p>“MLM as a business model is flawed, unfair, and deceptive. Worldwide feedback suggests it is also extremely viral, predatory, and harmful to many participants. This conclusion does not just apply to a specific MLM company, but to the entire MLM industry. It is a systemic problem.” </p><cite>THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION</cite></blockquote> <p class="has-large-font-size">The bottom line? MLM is expensive, yields little (if any) results, and does not offer a sustainable way to earn an income from home. Even if you’re desperate to start working from home, remember MLM is not the answer. There are better options to work from home without investment. </p> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Get Clear On What You Want (And What You Don’t) </h2> <p class="has-large-font-size">Wanting to work from home is excellent. There are a lot of benefits to remote life, including more time with family and friends, better-earning potential, no commute, and being able to work from anywhere in the world. But just a desire to work remotely isn’t enough. You are trying to work from home, but the distractions are getting the best of you. How can you be more efficient with your time so that you don’t spend an hour of your workday unloading the dishwasher or responding to the group texts about your best friend’s baby shower? Let’s look at some tips:</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Time Blocking</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Someone taught me how to do this only a few months back, and it has been life-changing as I work remotely as a Virtual Assistant. Check out my <a href="http://thedigitalrabbit.com/virtual-assistant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Top 7 Skills Needed to be a Virtual Assistant</a>.</p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Get out your calendar (paper planner…google…whatever works) and think about the tasks you need to accomplish today. Next, think about how long each task will take you. Now- block off periods during your day to GET THOSE TASKS DONE! For example, if you have to work on a project for your boss that’s due Friday and you think it will take you about 2 hours, block it off on your calendar from 9-11 am first thing in the morning when your brain is awake and active! </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Here is the kicker though- YOU CANNOT WORK ON ANYTHING ELSE DURING THAT TIME!</p> <p class="has-large-font-size">This is the beauty of time blocking! Then maybe you block 11-12 for lunch, 12-1 for folding laundry, 1-3 for more work-related tasks and then 3-4 for taking a walk or exercise. Turn your phone to airplane mode or Do not disturb or add an app such as <a href="http://calm.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Calm</a> to help get you in the work zone with music to help you relax and focus. Do NOT open Instagram to see your friend’s new cute baby or start folding the laundry sitting on the bed during your designated work time. DO YOUR WORK! Get it done and check that project off. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Designated Work Space</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">In order to stay efficient while working remotely, you also need to have a designated workspace. I talk about this and more in <a rel="noreferrer noopener" href="http://thedigitalrabbit.com/remote-life/" target="_blank">TIPS ON ADJUSTING TO REMOTE WORK-LIFE</a>. Have a set office space so you can limit your distractions around the house such as the tv, being in the playroom while your child is playing or sitting at the kitchen while your husband cooks. If you have a difficult time finding an office space in your house, maybe going to the closest coffee shop to work is more up your alley. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Use the right tools to make your work much easier</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">Using the right tools and systems can make you quicker, better and more efficient. Technology today makes it super simple to plan, manage, oversee and execute tasks. They have put together an extensive list that covers all areas of working remotely. </p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Leave Personal life for later</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">We all know that the dishes aren’t going to load themselves into the dishwasher and as much as we would like the laundry to fold itself, it’s just not going to happen. It can be easy to get distracted by all of the house chores that need to be done during the day while working from home but keep yourself on a schedule and schedule time to do those tasks in addition to your work hours. Maybe first thing when you get up you spend an hour going through the house from 8-9 am and doing chores and again at the end of your workday. You slide out of bed and slip into your comfiest sweatshirt and yoga pants. You go downstairs and grab a fresh cup of coffee. Now it’s time to go to work… but you don’t have to leave your house.</p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Does this sound like an amazing morning? Is this something that you want? The remote work-life/work from home trend is here to stay and even more now than ever with the Corona Virus Pandemic currently happening. Some of you may be missing the hustle and bustle of the office life but many of you may realize that working from home is something you actually like and want to keep doing. You can read all about how amazing it is to work from home in my other blog, <a href="http://thedigitalrabbit.com/work-from-home/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ultimate Guide to Work Online from Home in 2020</a>.</p> <p class="has-large-font-size">YOU DECIDE THAT WORKING FROM HOME IS FOR YOU AND YOU GO FOR IT! NOW, HOW DO YOU ADJUST FROM the 9 to 5 OFFICE LIFE TO BEING AT HOME 24/7?!</p> <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://mlvebvfbx4tg.i.optimole.com/w:1024/h:683/q:mauto/ig:avif/f:best/http://thedigitalrabbit.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/laptop-computer.jpg" alt="remote work life" class="wp-image-907"/></figure> <h3 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>HERE ARE SOME TIPS:</strong></h3> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">– <strong>Set Aside a Work Space</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">When you live and work in the same place and are there all of the time, you have to have a designated workspace. If you have an extra room, great! Make it into your dream office! Do you have a loft area? A basement? Even an area in the kitchen where you could create a workspace? Do whatever works for you in your home. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Some things to keep in mind: Although it sounds great to sit in your bed with your laptop all day, this will start confusing your body and it will be hard not to sit in bed and work at 11 pm at night. It is best to keep work and your personal life as separate as you can in order to have a better work/ life balance. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Speaking of a better work/ life balance…</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">– <strong>Have Set Work Hours</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">If you are a W-2 employee of a company that works remotely, you may be obligated to work the typical 9 am-5 pm with an hour lunch break. Others that work remotely may get to set their own hours, such as a Freelancer. You can learn more about what a freelancer does <a href="http://thedigitalrabbit.com/successful-freelancer/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">HERE</a>. Make sure that you sit at your desk/ workspace during work hours and shut your computer off when it is your personal time or family time and leave work in that designated space. This will create more normalcy as if you were going into an office. This also helps to limit distractions while you are at home. Although it would be great to sit in your bed and binge-watch your favourite Netflix show (Mine is The Office!) while you work, this might not be the most productive use of your workday.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">– <strong>Communicate with Other Humans</strong></h3> <p class="has-large-font-size">While working from home can be the dream for most introverts, there <em>are</em> extroverts that do remote work also. Humans NEED human interaction, and if you don’t get that for days or weeks at a time, you might just go crazy working from home. Try going to work at your local coffee shop 1 or 2 days a week. Get a change of scenery and talk to the barista for a few minutes. You may even end up meeting some other remote workers like yourself. If you work on a team, try using a messenger system like <a href="http://slack.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Slack</a>, <a href="http://discord.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Discord</a>, <a href="https://gsuite.google.com/products/chat/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Google Chat</a> or <a href="http://voxer.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Voxer</a>. </p> <p class="has-large-font-size">Working remotely can be an amazing opportunity.
