He was popular in jazz in the 1950’s and 1960’s and switcheed to pop and world music in the 1970’s wihout losing his ability to improvise. “Push Push” was the title track of his 1971 album. Duane Allman, who was a frequent session man at Muscle Shoals Studio (where the album was recorded), accompanies him on guitar.

 225.

“Mocktail” is a portmanteau for “mock” and “cocktail.” It’s a drink that looks and tastes like a cocktail but contains no alcohol. If you’re the designated driver, or don’t drink, or would prefer a non-alcoholic drink, a mocktail is a perfect substitute.

 226.
The non-alcoholic Blue Lagoon has blue Curaçao syrup, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, what the British call lemonade (lemon or lemon-lime soda, such as 7up or Sprite), plain soda, and lemon slices. Click the picture above for the recipe. The actual Blue Lagoon cocktail has vodka in place of the plain soda.

 234.

The Shirley Temnple was made in the 1930’s and named for the adorable child actress, who thought they were too sweet. It’s made from Grenadine syrup, lime juice, ginger ale, and a Maraschino cherry. The recipe has mutated somewhat to where some people use lemon-lime soda (7up or Sprite) either in combination with or instead of ginger ale, but ginger ale is the preferred soda for the drink. If you use cola instead, it’s called a Roy Rogers.

 235.
Most mocktails are simply the cocktail minus the booze, such as the Virgin Mary, Virgin Piňa Colada, and Virgin Margarita. Use your favorite search engine and look up “mocktail recipes,” and knock yourself out.

 378.
A good week last week, the second week of the A to Z Challenge. I had a post on the A to Z Challenge blog about not losing heart. I’ll have another post on the Challenge blog this Wednesday, as well as a Turntable Talk post on Dave’s blog on Thursday.

 379.
This past week has been a windy and rainy one. Hoping for better weather this week, and I do believe we’ll have one.

 380.
Many thanks for your comments, especially on my Saturday A to Z post.

It was written by the band and released in November of that year. It reached #1 on the Hot 100 and the Houl Soul Singles chart in 1975, and also reached #10 on the Disco/Dance chart.

 578.

Up until about 4th grade, my brothers and I would go home from school at noon, where Lillian, the woman who kept an eye on us and cleaned the house until Mom got home, would give us our lunch. We loved Lillian, and Lillian loved us.

 579.
In July of 1966, Mom and Dad sat us all down and told us that they had decided to buy a new car, since the 1959 Chevy Biscayne was dying a slow and terrible death. This would mean that they would have to let Lillian go, and it would also mean that we would have to stay at school for lunch. We were bummed, but we did need a new car, because the old car had a widening hole in the floorboards of the back seat, and soon it would be big enough for one of us to fall through, and for whatever reason they didn’t want that to happen.

 580.
As we were shopping for Back To School, we were told that we could each pick out a lunchbox (i.e. a lunchpail) to take to school. We went out to one of the local department stores (Rogers Park in those days had a lot of them) and each of us picked out a lunchbox. Jim and Kip chose Batman lunchboxes…

 596.

When school started, we were sent, lunchboxes packed with ham sandwiches, bag of potato chips, a couple of cookies, the matching Thermoses filled with milk. At noon, rather than leaving the building and walking home, we lined up outside the lunchroom until Mrs. Johnson, who looked and acted like a prison matron, led us in. We sat at two separate tables, boys at one, girls at the other, and quietly ate our lunches. Most of us who stayed for lunch lived so far from school that, by the time they got home from school, it was time to turn around and go back. In contrast, Jim, Kip, and I lived about two blocks from school and could sit and watch Bozo’s Circus until about 12:30 and make it back before the afternoon bell rang. Nevertheless, Dad decreed we were to stay at school for lunch, and we didn’t question him. We finally bought our new car in early October, and something about it made eating at school and dealing with Mrs. Johnson almost worth it.

 597.
By the beginning of November, Dad was at home all day in his pajamas and robe, sitting in his chair, fighting off what he and the doctor decided was a bladder infection. The Sunday after Thanksgiving, he was taken to the hospital in excruciating pain, the bladder infection having gotten much worse. On Christmas Eve, they performed surgery and discovered that what they thought was an aggressive bladder infection was metastatic reticulosarcoma, a non-Hodgkins lymphoma. He died on January 25, one month to the day after Christmas.

 598.
Soon after that, Lillian, who had been stting at home waiting to be called for another job, saw Dad’s death notice in the paper, called my mother and offered her services, gratis, until the end of the school year. Our lunchboxes were relegated to a shelf in the pantry, we once again came home for lunch, and at least that was back to normal.

 599.
I think we threw out the lunchboxes as part of our preparations to move a few years later. Had we kept them, we could probably have made a pretty penny selling them…
