Indonesian language grew and developed from Malay language which has been used as a lingua franca throughout Southeast Asia. Malay language was even used before Indonesia’s independence in 1945, both among the Indonesian society and between the Indonesian society and the Dutch who at that time colonized Indonesia.</p> <p>The use of Malay language began in the 7th century with the discovery of evidences in the form of inscriptions scattered in various cities, such as Palembang, Bangka, Jambi, Gandasuli, and Bogor. During the reign of the Sriwijaya Kingdom, Malay language was also used as the language of culture in Buddhist textbooks, the language of inter-tribal relations, and the language of trade (both between Nusantara tribes and with traders from outside the archipelago).</p> <p>The development of the use of Malay language is clearer from the heritage of the Islamic kingdom, with evidences in the form of inscribed stones and even literary results, such as Syair Hamzah Fansuri, Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai, etc. The spread of Malay language to various parts of the archipelago occurred simultaneously with the spread of Islam. This language is easily accepted by the people of the archipelago because it does not recognize the level of speech. In addition, Malay also absorbed the vocabulary of other languages, such as Sanskrit, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Portuguese, and Dutch. For example, the words “bendera” and “pesta” from Portuguese “bandeira” and “festa”, “alfabet”, “filosofi”, “haram”, and “halal” from the same word in Arabic, “dirgahayu” and “nama” from Sanskrit “dirghayu” and “naam”, respectively.</p> <p>It was only on October 28, 1928, within the Youth Pledge (Sumpah Pemuda) that Malay language was officially renamed Indonesian language and pledged as the national language. The youth meeting that produced the Youth Pledge was called the Youth Congress (Kongres Pemuda). This meeting was sparked by the growing sense of brotherhood and unity of the Indonesian people who share the Malay language.</p> <p>Along the way, Indonesian became more widely used during the Japanese colonization due to the ban on the use of Dutch language in Indonesia. This language also began to be used in the realm of politics and government, replacing Dutch language.</p> <p>The day after Indonesia’s independence was proclaimed on August 17, 1945, the 1945 Constitution (UUD 1945) stipulated an article that read “The State Language is Indonesian” (Bahasa Negara adalah Bahasa Indonesia). At this point, Indonesian was officially used in all spheres of Indonesian life, especially those related to government and state.</p> <p>After independence, an institution that took care of linguistic affairs was formed, namely the Language Development and Development Agency (Badan Pengembangan dan Pembinaan Bahasa). This institution continues to strive for the development, guidance and protection of Indonesian language and literature to this day. It may seem ridiculous that one word can have two opposite meanings, but it is important for translators to recognize this oddity to avoid translation errors. For example, the word “<strong>seed” </strong>means to sow seeds on the ground, but it can also mean to clean the seeds from the fruit. This makes a sentence that says “seed a watermelon” can be interpreted differently without understanding the contextual background.</p> <p>Since every language evolves naturally and influences each other, word development in every language is inevitable. In some cases, many translators are unaware that such adaptations have given birth to many new English contronyms of one word to be used differently in other situations. </p> <p>The word “<strong>bolt</strong>” may be the clearest example of word development in English. Previously, the word bolt was an English verb that meant to secure or fasten something. In its development, this word then became a verb meaning to leave or run away. This development probably came from its noun meaning a projectile that usually travels fast. </p> <p>What is important for the translator is to understand the context in which the words are translated so that it will not lead to errors that contradict the intended meaning. This knowledge is very important because contronyms in English can change the whole meaning of the translated material. Therefore, every translator should be aware that every part of the language has been translated correctly to prevent such mistakes.</p> <p>In some fields that require accurate translation, such as the legal and medical fields, it is essential to be aware of words that have multiple and sometimes contradictory meanings, otherwise, mistakes in translation can be costly.</p> <p>The word sanction, for example, is an example of an English term that can have two very contrasting meanings when applied in the legal field. There are no effective </em><strong><em>sanctions </em></strong><em>against illegal gratuities.</em></li></ul> <p>Without contextual understanding, both “sanctions” in both sentences can be interpreted as punishment. However, the first sentence can be interpreted differently in a slightly different context when “they” ask for permission to enact new regulations for a desired purpose.</p> <p>The word sanction should give us a clear picture of how the contronym should not be underestimated in translation to every language. Some languages may have different ways of perceiving each meaning, but like the use of the word sanction in translation to or from English, it should be done more carefully to avoid translation errors.</p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What are common pitfalls translators face with English contronyms?</strong></h4> <p>Language is dynamic in nature since it is not a static entity. It evolves and adapts over time as a result of various factors, such as cultural shifts, technological advancements, social changes, and interactions between different language communities. That is the reason why translators must be careful and understand each aspect of the language thoroughly before attempting to translate important material. </p> <p>The opposite meaning of the word so-called contronym or Janus words is a real challenge for every translator that they require high language awareness to recognize and deal with such kind of ambiguity. With this awareness, translators will have a better understanding that some exceptions in translating various linguistic constructions must always rely on background and context to avoid mistakes that may be fatal. </p> <p>In mankind’s history, there were countless translation errors due to ambiguity including contronyms that have multiple interpretations. These kinds of mistakes often have expensive consequences and take a large number of lives. An example of this occurred during the war when a truce message was ambiguously taken as a declaration to continue fighting, leading to unmeasured actions on either side that cost many lives.</p> <p>In many cases, there are also translators who rely too much on the use of machine translators to get quick results with little effort in language conversion. However, current machine translators are not perfect for full-scale translation. Many language elements cannot be translated perfectly thus it can damage the originality of the language. Therefore, language awareness of translators, interpreters, and editors is still playing a vital role in the success of translation.</p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>What techniques can translators employ to minimize translation errors related to English contronyms?</strong></h4> <p>Although contronyms are a real challenge in translation, any translator can minimize errors related to contronyms or other ambiguities by using the following techniques:</p> <ul class="wp-block-list"><li><strong>Context Analysis</strong> – The technic requires translators to analyze carefully the context in which the contronym appears. Take into consideration the whole words, phrases, and meanings of the surrounding text or sentence. By understanding the context, it will help identify the intended meaning of the expression.</li> <li><strong>Meaning Research and Verification</strong> – Thorough research to find out the various possible meanings and interpretations of a word that contains contradictory meanings. Consult dictionaries, glossaries, and reliable language references to gain a comprehensive understanding of the word and its possible conflicting meanings.</li> <li><strong>Source Text Analysis</strong> – Carefully examine the source text and the message it is trying to convey. Be careful to consider the tone, intent, and audience. The number of native American English speakers now exceeds that of British English speakers worldwide thus it makes the standard American language a formal language in many universities and professional interactions.</p> <p>It is worth noting that the American language was historically brought by settlers from England who came to this continent around the 17th century. Along with the arrival of other settlers from other European countries, such as the Netherlands, France, Germany, and Spain, this language evolved into the American language that exists today. </p> <h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Adaptation to Indigenous American Language</strong></h4> <p>Linguists claim that American English is a linguistic melting pot that evolved from a variety of languages which makes it sound different from other English dialects. Although early American English mostly developed from British English, the interaction with other languages of the other settlers, immigrants, and the Native American languages later gave the language some unique and distinct characteristics from its origins. </p> <p>Some animal names like chipmunk, coyote, opossum, and raccoon are taken from their original names as the natives call them. It could be simply said as a standardized language system specifically in the American writing system. In the context of communication, there is more than one type of language or specifically called ‘dialect’ that is distinctively spoken in some areas of the US. Although the dialect in the US is not as many as in UK English, several variations are very notable and become interesting in linguistic discussion. </p> <p>In some arguments, Americans are believed to only speak one type of English but with many variations of accents. But the linguistic evidence has proved that there are several regional dialects in the US. These regional dialectal variations are apparent in the different sound and pronunciation styles, lexicon, and even syntactic arrangement of English in different regions of the US. </p> <p>The birth of these dialects has a longer history than how English entered the United States. In the 17th century, English was more homogeneous throughout every region in the US. The colonialization of the British empire in this region had made the language dominant over other languages brought by settlers from Western Europe and immigrants from Africa and Asia. </p> <p>In 1776, the United States of America declared their independence from the British Empire which meant they also proclaimed language independence from their mother country. However, at that time the Britisher accent was still considered to have a higher level than the American English style. These sentiments create social class divisions that group people by race, cultural background, education, and wealth. </p> <p>As great migration continues in the 19th century, the emergence of local accents and dialects enriched the English varieties in the US. The local accent was created by smaller heterogeneous communities spread in some regions in the US. These communities often consisted of people with different languages, social statuses, and cultural backgrounds which created differences among the communities. </p> <p>However, many social groups were formed containing people of similar status and background. The new generation among these groups acquired the particular language accent of their group and some others even adopted unique language features born from both assimilation and isolation. Thus, the next social generation had spoken new regional dialects that have distinct features from the mother language.</p> <p>Today, there are at least four recognizable regional dialects in the US which are the Southern, New England, Northern, and Midland dialects. Among these regions, several subgroups are speaking notable accents. Beyond these regional dialects, American English also consists of other English varieties which are not bounded by regional dialects. African-American vernacular dialect, for instance, is a style of English spoken by African American sociogroup. Although this dialect seems closely related to the southern dialect, they are always consistent in many regions that have strong hip-hop culture.
