From the problematic materiality of plastics to the metaphors of plastic thought, the first three-course meeting of TdMS 2.0 explored the opportunities for transdisciplinary exchange among the students and faculty for the remainder of their courses. The discussion often returned to the politics of plastic: its utopia of transformability, its problematic durability, the scale of its production and consumption, the question of its desire, its post-consumer use. Mitchell Joachim’s (http://www.terreform.org/) architecture studio displayed methods and design provocations for radical domestic-scale upcycling of plastics. Gregg Lambert’s (http://www.syracusehumanities.org/) seminar presented and discussed the metaphors of plasticity running through modern media discourse. And Keith Edmier presented work-in-progress of his students exploring mold-making processes in their Introduction to Plastics course.
