20.
Buehler returns to dominant form with 6 scoreless innings against the Reds.

Walker Buehler looked extremely sharp in his home whites Friday night at Dodger Stadium. His pitching was equally as sharp on the mound in the 4-0 Dodgers win over the Reds for his first win at Dodger Stadium in two years.

 21.
The Dodgers right-hander looked like he was more comfortable back on the mound at Dodger Stadium compared to his first two starts on the road.

 22.
Buehler is back.

 23.
Buehler needed only seven pitches to retire the Reds in the first inning to make a statement right away. He pitched six innings for the first time since making his official return, a promising start. The command of his curveball was noticeably improved. He struck out seven and walked none.

 29.
 30.

 31.
The Dodgers lineup was noticeably different with the absence of Mookie Betts. It was merely a scheduled off day for Mookie who watched his teammates pick him up from the dugout.

 32.
Grant Ashcraft also pitched two scoreless frames, and it was clear that a Mookie-less lineup would need a spark from someone else to work. Nonetheless, the offense made Ashcraft work, and the Reds starter had already made 44 pitches in two innings.

 33.
Jacob Hurtubise got the first hit of the game against Buehler, a two-out single in the third. It also happened to be Hurtubise’s first major-league hit.

 34.
Dodgers Turn The Pages

 35.
The Dodgers finally got a man on base and into scoring position in the third after a Enrique Hernandez leadoff walk and wild pitch. Miguel Rojas’s groundout moved Kiké to third, but Shoehi Ohtani failed to convert the run by grounding out.

 36.
Andy Pages continued to impress with a RBI single to break through in the fourth against Ashcraft. Gavin Lux got the job done with a scoring groundout to make it 2-0 Dodgers.

 37.
There was a sketchy moment when the gloves of Miguel Vargas and Andy Pages collided, and the ball popped out and gave Jake Fraley a triple. It looked like Pages called off Vargas whose inexperience showed in the moment. Buehler wasn’t fazed with the ineptitude in the outfield and induced a pop-up and ground-out to get out of it.

 45.
The Dodgers scored their third run in the fifth. Miguel Rojas continues to contribute defensively and offensively. Miggy Ro doubled, and Freeman’s RBI single brought him home.

 46.
Teoscar Hernandez, RBI leader, knocked in the Dodgers fourth run of the night with a little smacker past the infield in the bottom of the eighth.

 47.
Michael Grove, Daniel Hudson and J.P. Feyereisen each pitched a scoreless inning out of the bullpen to defend Walker’s dominant start.

 83.
Walker Buehler (0-1, 7.36 ERA, 7 ⅓ IP) makes his third start since returning to the mound for the Dodgers. Last time out, against the Padres, Buehler allowed three runs on five hits including two home runs in 3 ⅓ innings (77 pitches).

 84.
Graham Ashcraft (3-2, 4.12 ERA, 1.443 WHIP) takes the mound for Cincinnati.

 85.
Mookie Betts is out of the Dodgers starting lineup tonight after starting the first 47 games of this season. Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernandez are now the only remaining position players who have started every game this season for the Dodgers.

 138.
With the new bat speed metrics unveiled this week at MLB.com, a lot of smart folks have dissected them thoughtfully in hopes of figuring out what is useful and what might not be. In his The Advance Scout newsletter, Noah Woodward noted the skill of Freddie Freeman with his approach at the plate, and how the Dodgers first baseman is able to be more direct to the ball.

 139.
“He’s able to meld strong decision making with an adaptable swing in ways that no other hitter can,” Woodward wrote. “You can see this ability in his wide bat speed distribution.”

 140.

 141.
Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz is off to an incredible start this season. He’s hitting .270/.370/.503 with nine home runs, a 145 wRC+, and we already saw his impact on the bases in the series opener. On Thursday, De La Cruz had four hits and four stolen bases, just the second such game ever at Dodger Stadium (Houston outfielder Gerald Young was the first, in 1987).

 142.
De La Cruz was the first person with four steals in a game against the Dodgers since old friend Jayson Werth in 2009.

 143.
With 30 stolen bases through Friday — 13 more than anyone else in the majors — De La Cruz on pace to steal an eye-popping 108 this season, a number unreached in the majors since 1987, when Vince Coleman’s 109 steals marked his third triple-digit-steal season in a row.

 144.
Sam Miller at his Pebble Hunting newsletter this week was enamored with De La Cruz’s daring on the basepaths, harkening back to the style of the 1980s. “Watching somebody steal 100 bases (or even 80 bases) with intention is a tremendously exciting pursuit,” Miller wrote.

 145.
The last year anyone stole even 80 bases was 1988, when both Rickey Henderson (93 steals) and Coleman (81) did so.

 146.

 147.
Noted grifter Frank McCourt, who dragged the Dodgers into bankruptcy before selling for over a billion dollars in profit more than a decade ago, now has a plan to buy TikTok. I don’t really care about what his plan is, nor has he earned any reason for anyone to trust him, but my favorite part about this story was Ben Smith at Semafor describing McCourt as a “tech critic.”

 169.
Karros made up for lost time by allowing runs in all four of the innings he started against Wichita. He allowed a two-run home run and three doubles, with six runs in his 3⅔ innings, matching his total this season in 34 innings with Great Lakes.

 170.
The Dodgers’ 16th-round draft pick in 2022 out of UCLA also walked a career-high six batters on Friday. He had eight walks in 47 innings in High-A dating back to last August.

 180.
Triple-A Oklahoma City

 181.
Two-time Cy Young Award winner Blake Snell, on a rehab assignment, had his way with Oklahoma City in the Sacramento River Cats’ (Giants) win on Friday. Snell didn’t allow a hit nor a run in his five innings, with 10 strikeouts.

 182.
Oklahoma City didn’t score until Andre Lipcius hit a solo home run in the seventh.

 183.
With multiple starting pitchers called up to the Dodgers this week, Oklahoma City promoted Christian Romero from High-A Great Lakes for a spot start. He kept the game close, just 1-0 into the fifth inning, but three runs in that frame spoiled an otherwise productive Triple-A debut.

 184.
Double-A Tulsa

 185.
Three runs in the seventh completed a Drillers comeback win over the Wichita Wind Surge (Twins). Austin Beck had the tiebreaking two-run single.

 186.
After Karros exited in the fourth inning, Michael Hobbs, Antonio Knowles, and Logan Boyer combined to pitch 5... scoreless innings to help facilitate the comeback on offense. Hobbs (seven outs) and Knowles (six outs) each struck out four.

 187.
Diego Cartaya and Brendon Davis each homered in the win. For Cartaya, that makes three home runs in his last five games.

 188.
High-A Great Lakes

 189.
The Loons fell behind early and dug too deep a hole in a loss to the Dayton Dragons (Reds).

 190.
Right fielder Yunior Garcia had two of Great Lakes’ six hits, and drove in their second and final run with an RBI single in the sixth. The first run came courtesy of a sacrifice fly by third baseman Jake Gelof.

 191.
Starter Jackson Ferris allowed four runs in his four innings, two runs each in the second and fourth. In eight starts this season, the 20-year-old left-hander has a 5.91 ERA in 32 innings with a 25.8-percent strikeout rate and 12.6-percent walk rate.

 192.
Low-A Rancho Cucamonga

 193.
Logan Walker’s RBI triple game the Quakes a walk-off win in a wild back-and-forth game against the Inland Empire 66ers (Angels).

 194.
After De Paula’s second home run tied the score at 9-9 in the sixth inning, the two teams combined to score in the final five half-innings, and Rancho Cucamonga grabbed the lead in each of the seventh, eighth, and ninth innings.

 195.
Kendall George had three singles a walk, and scored four runs. Jesus Galiz also homered for the Quakes. Jeral Perez had a double and two singles.

 196.
Transactions

 197.
Triple-A: Miguel Vargas was called up to the Dodgers, as was right-hander Ricky Vanasco. Left-hander Anthony Banda was acquired from Cleveland for cash. Pitcher Christian Romero was promoted from Great Lakes.

 198.
Double-A: Pitcher Jared Karros was promoted from Great Lakes to Tulsa. Thursday starter Yon Castro was placed on the temporary inactive list.

 372.

 373.
 374.
Home runs by Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and Jason Heyward put LA back in the win column

The Dodgers got home runs from Mookie Betts, Shohei Ohtani, and a just-returned Jason Heyward to beat the Reds 7-3 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium, snapping a brief two-game skid.

 375.
After the Dodgers had consecutive games without an extra-base hit — their first such streak since March 29-30, 2018, and those two games matching their total powerless games through the first 44 games this season — Mookie Betts immediately put an end to that skid by whacking the fifth pitch of the game into the left field pavilion

 376.
That was Betts’ third leadoff home run of the season and 51st of his career, the latter fifth all-time and two behind Craig Biggio for fourth place.

 377.
Betts was on first base after a forceout in the third inning when Ohtani came to the plate on a day in which the Japanese superstar was honored at City Hall. About eight hours after the City of Los Angeles proclaimed May 17 “Shohei Ohtani Day,” Ohtani decreed himself the major league home run leader by going to the opposite field.

 378.

 379.

 380.
Shohei Ohtani joins the pack atop the MLB home run leaderboard with No. 13! pic.twitter.com/z7Ui2rpfxb
— MLB (@MLB) May 18, 2024
 381.

 382.
 383.
 384.

 385.
His 13th home run of the season tied Gunnar Henderson of the Orioles and Kyle Tucker of the Astros for most in the National League. Ohtani’s 30th extra-base hit came in the Dodgers’ 47th game, his quickest to that many extra-base hits in a season, and tied with Duke Snider’s 1955 for the most through 47 games in franchise history.

 386.
Getting results, if not decisions

 387.
Staked to a 3-0 lead, James Paxton continued plodding along and got through six innings for the third start in a row. But he allowed single runs in three consecutive frames, including two solo home runs, to tie the score.

 388.
After walking the world in April, Paxton found the mechanical tweak he was looking for and has only two walks in three May starts, including none in his last two starts. But he’s also not missing many bats.

 389.
Paxton struck out two, giving him 25 strikeouts in 44⅓ innings this season. His 13-percent strikeout rate ranks 102nd among the 103 major league pitchers with at least 40 innings this season. Though he didn’t walk anyone on Friday, he ran the count full to his first three batters of the sixth inning. Tyler Stephenson was the last thing standing between a lead after six innings for Paxton, but instead Stephenson’s solo home run knotted the game up at 3-3.

 390.
With the left-handed Mike Ford leading off, Paxton began the seventh inning too but allowed a single to end his night. Michael Grove entered in relief and immediately picked off Jacob Hurtubise, who was pinch-running for Ford.

 391.
That’s three quality starts in a row for Paxton, and four on the season, but his contrast between results and underlying numbers remains stark. Paxton owns a 2.84 ERA after eight starts, but a 5.12 FIP. That’s the largest difference in the league.

 392.
Regaining the advantage

 393.
Elly De La Cruz threw wide to first base in a doomed attempt to double up Ohtani on a groundout in the seventh. The throw ended up in the camera well, which gave Ohtani second base. Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked to face Will Smith, who immediately made Cincinnati pay with his team-leading 17th hit with runners in scoring position this season.

 394.

 395.

 396.
The #Dodgers are back in front thanks to a Will Smith single! pic.twitter.com/3K782xREf3
— SportsNet LA (@SportsNetLA) May 18, 2024

 399.
 400.

 401.
Then Fernando Cruz uncorked a wild pitch to allow Freeman to score an insurance run, cashing in the intentional walk.

 402.
In the eighth inning, Jason Heyward hit a two-run home run on the day he was activated off the injured list after missing 40 games. His first homer of the season gave some breathing room.

 403.
After the Dodgers got the lead, which made a winner of Grove, Blake Treinen and Daniel Hudson took care of the last two innings. The bullpen eight of nine batters faced on Friday.

 404.
Friday particulars

 405.
Home runs: Mookie Betts (8), Shohei Ohtani (13), Jacon Heyward (1); Stuart Farichild (3), Tyler Stephenson (5)
