Produced by surf radio icon Phil Dirt, Radio Waves is a collection of live material culled from KFJC and KPFA station recordings from 1992-98, and includes an EP of four tracks from a concert in 2001.<br />Anyone who has listened to the band's previous CDs, like Guitar Noir or Nomad, knows that The Aqua Velvets can hang-ten, musically speaking. But let's face it, surf guitar cover bands are a dime a dozen ever since the Pulp Fiction soundtrack came out. While The Aqua Velvets play perfectly good covers of all the surf classics ("Diamond Head", "Walk Don't Run", "Apache", and "Pipeline"), what sets them apart from the other Dick Dale and Ventures cover bands are their original songs, which are a fusion of disparate influences.Their original tracks, "Bravado", "Gringo", and "Mexican Rooftop Afternoon", emulate the moody spaghetti western soundtracks of Ennio Morricone. "Holly Tiki" and "Surfmania" are the most surf-friendly numbers, while "Swampabilly Hop" is pure Rockabilly. On "Martini Time" and "Green Sunshine" they just let loose and have fun, mixing up the tempos dramatically for expressive effect. Then the band drifts into loungeville with mellow tunes, like "Guitar Noir" and "Subterranea", which sound like the haunting soundtrack for a hard-boiled surf/detective movie waiting to be made.<br />Even with all the genre exploration, with 25 songs on two CDs, The Aqua Velvets can get a bit monotonous. However, diehard fans will be stoked to hear these live recordings, and it's a good introduction to newbie grommets. Over half the album, however, consists of covers, most of them highly unexpected; these include the Monotones' doo wop hit "Book of Love," and the smooth Elvis Presley chart-topper "All Shook Up," and the 1940s staple "In the Mood." Performances are very sloppy and off-the-cuff, yet somehow endearingly humorous; Robyn Hitchcock's surreal between-song patter adds to the fun. Recording quality is slapdash, with occasional distortion present; instrumental balances are at times rather haphazard. Wisely, on Anthems they focus on where they are now: cautionary tales such as "Fame and Fortune" and "Iceman" come from the perspective of those who have already been through these kinds of crises. Musically speaking, Anthems for Doomed Youth is also more mature; lead single "Gunga Din" trades in slow-burning reggae-punk that is more considered and contemplative -- at least before it catches fire at the end -- than much of what the Libertines have done before. At times, the album sounds surprisingly tame, thanks in part to Jake Gosling's manicured production; that the Libertines chose a former One Direction collaborator is another reminder of how far removed they are from the early 2000s, when they worked with Mick Jones. But for every moment that could use a little more grit, like "Belly of the Beast," there are more that make the album's subdued sound a strength. The reflective, self-referential title track proves that the Libertines' gift for mythologizing hasn't gone anywhere, while "Dead for Love" and "You're My Waterloo" -- which the band has had in its pocket since 1999 -- boast a polish and grandeur that they didn't always have time for back in the day. Similarly, the tempo shifts and complex structure of "Barbarians" are tight instead of shambling, suggesting that on a level of craft, they can even surpass where they've been. The Libs save Anthems' out-and-out rockers for last, almost as if they're conserving their energy: "Glasgow Coma Scale Blues" and "Fury of Chonburi" are the closest the band comes to reliving the good old days, while "Heart of the Matter" is an anthem fueled by venom. Palm trees framing a cat's eye moon over the golden gate bridge. A view only obtainable from Treasure Island. Its easy to forget that San Franscisco was the home of Sam Spade--a place where Vertigo could be made--Mort Sahl could tell topical jokes between jazz sets, or people would pass around a jug of wine at a poetry reading. This music has all the ambience of the cool, old, San Fransciso of pulp detective novels, beats and cool jazz. I absolutely totally do not understand the remarks of those reviewers who were disappointed in this cd. Comparisons with previous Aqua Velvets releases is unfair. This collection of tunes stands on its own merits.
