71.
Hi Vicky. Thank you for inviting me.

76.
Tell us a little bit about yourself, Katherine.

77.

78.
79.
80.
81.
Well, I have been around for a while. I’m originally from Wales but I moved to Spain when I started working as an English teacher in 1987. I’ve lived here ever since. These days I live in a rural area in the north of the country. There are only nine inhabitants in our village so it’s very quiet and peaceful.

82.
83.
84.
85.
In terms of my professional life, I started out teaching private classes. Later, I got a teaching job in a school. After a few years I started teacher training, then writing professionally. These days I mainly work as a writer, but I continue to do teacher training and teaching now and then.

86.
87.
88.
89.

90.
Could you describe your typical week ?

91.

92.
93.
94.
95.
The good thing about being a freelance writer is that I can decide how to organize my time. That means there’s no such thing as a typical week. Right now, I’m in the middle of running a ‘Writing ELT materials’ course with my business partner, John Hughes, so I have to build in time for that.

96.
97.
98.
99.
Most weeks are a combination of two kinds of work: actual writing and the peripheral work that goes with it, such as meetings or reading through briefs from publishers. I’m usually doing other things too. This week I’m writing an article for a teaching journal and I’m planning a workshop for a convention in March.

100.
101.
102.
103.
It isn’t all work though. I’m increasingly aware of the importance of self-care. I start every day with a walk and I swim every day. I take plenty of breaks away, short ones where I pop outdoors for a breath of fresh air or longer ones when I might read, do some chores or watch TV.

104.
105.
106.
107.

108.
How do you progress from a teacher to a materials writer?

109.

110.
111.
112.
113.
There isn’t just one pathway. I was given the opportunity to write a primary coursebook when a commissioning editor attended a workshop I gave at a TESOL Spain convention. This first writing experience was very positive and I decided I’d like to move into writing full time, so I approached another publisher. The coursebooks became a kind of CV. If you’ve written something for a publisher, you’ve proven you can do the essentials – not only write, but follow a brief, keep to a schedule, work with an editor and respond well to feedback.

114.
115.
116.
117.
Anyone wishing to become a materials writer needs to get their work seen. Presenting at a conference, giving a webinar, sharing ideas through a blog are all good ways for publishers to find you. It also helps to show what your specialism is. If you know a lot about phonics, for example, make sure everyone knows.

118.
119.
120.
121.

122.
What are the essential skills needed to get into materials writing?

123.

124.
125.
126.
127.
I think we can divide skills into different areas.

128.
129.
130.
131.
First, there are the skills you gain through teaching, for example, knowing how long an activity might take.

132.
133.
134.
135.
Then there are skills related to the writing process and the principles of writing. These include things like knowing how to design a sequence of exercises that flow well and achieve the key objectives.

136.
137.
138.
139.
There are also skills which are specific to different contexts, such as self-study resources for Business English students or materials delivered via an app.

140.
141.
142.
143.
Finally, if you want to work for a publisher, you’ll need to consider skills of teamworking and collaboration, as well as time management and responding well to feedback.

144.
145.
146.
147.

148.
Please comment on the following “Designing appropriate materials is not a science: it is a strange mixture of imagination, insight and analytical reasoning.”

149.

150.
151.
152.
153.
Oh! I wondered who said that. It’s lovely. I see that it was written by Graham Low, University of York. It’s cited quite frequently. I’m not surprised as it’s spot on. I would maybe adapt it and say, “Designing appropriate materials is not a science: it is a mixture of creativity, insight, analytical reasoning and hard work.” Creativity is key. We can all make materials that are mediocre but what the best ones have in common is a spark of imagination, something that engages the learners and perhaps prompts an emotional response.

154.
155.
156.
157.

158.
What are your golden rules about materials writing you would like to share with new colleagues?

159.

160.
161.
162.
163.
I’ll try and keep it to three.

164.
165.
166.
167.
(1) Keep things as simple as possible, from the wording of an instruction to the design of a page, and everything in between. Simplicity is everything.

168.
169.
170.
171.
(2) Always keep the end-users in mind while writing. This means the students as a group and as individuals, and also the teachers who might be using the materials.

172.
173.
174.
175.
(3) Respect copyright laws. We should behave impeccably in this respect so that students have good models to follow.

176.
177.
178.
179.

180.
Would you like to share your plans for the future?

181.

182.
183.
184.
185.
I love my work but ultimately, I’d like to work less and relax more. One of the downsides of being a freelance writer is that it isn’t easy to plan big chunks of time off. But that’s something I’m working on, especially longer term. Ideally, I’d like to work three months on and three months off. That would be perfect.

186.
187.
188.
189.
In this line of work, you never quite know what’s around the corner. I’ve just signed a contract to write a series of graded readers so that’s quite exciting and will keep me busy for the near future. There will be other projects too, but I have no idea what.

190.
191.
192.
193.
John and I have lots of plans bubbling away too – courses to run, talks and workshops at conferences, and books to self-publish. No peace for the wicked, as they say.

Again, with the MA students, we discussed what academic writing is, its main features and covnentions. We also spent time on critical reading and its importance as well as critical writing. We went through ways of synthesising sources in our paragraphs and structuring strong arguments in order to convince our readers. The students posed interesting questions during the lecture/workshop on the difficulties of choosing adequate and reliable sources as well as on the ways we can make use of when critically analysing our sources in order to support concrete arguments. It was a pleasant evening and I was honored to talk to them. Many thanks to Dr Ianthi Assimakopoulou for inviting me every year.

294.
295.
First of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to give this interview and I would also like to welcome you! For people who might not know you, you are the coordinator of IATEFL’s ESPSIG. Can you please share some details about your professional background?

296.

297.
298.
299.
300.
I work as Lecturer in English at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences in Zurich, Switzerland, a position I have held since 2012. My main work is in the School of Life Sciences and Facility Management, where I teach with a specific focus on EAP and ESP.

301.

304.

305.
EAP has developed significantly as a field over the past few years and now it seems it will change even more. How do you feel AI will affect EAP overall?

306.

307.
308.
309.
310.
I think the question of AI is one that is at the forefront of everyone’s minds at the moment working in the field of education. The question really should be considered from two perspectives: positive impacts, and challenges and ethical concerns. Many aspects of the more positive perspective have the potential to affect all areas of the learning process, e.g. personalised learning, assessment, language resources, accessibility, and even content creation. The one area I feel is more specific to EAP is that of Academic writing assistance, particularly the availability of feedback on cohesion, clarity and coherence, three absolutely crucial elements of
the academic writing process. On the other hand, students often now will rely on AI to produce an academic piece of work, and then will be uncertain, or not bother to check, on the quality of the content produced. As we all know, the writer needs a deep awareness of what the output should look like, and the danger of over-reliance on AI is that this step will become lost. The danger of a lack of critical thinking skills is thus a very real one, and I therefore believe that EAP/ESP courses should henceforth focus more on the process of producing a piece of academic work, rather than assessing the final output.

311.
312.
313.
314.

315.
Regarding the SIG, what are the challenges you have faced since you were appointed to this position? How did you manage to overcome them?

316.

317.
318.
319.
320.
One of the main challenges I have come across is being in a position of having to manage both a group of people and a great many tasks without being seen in a superior position, which of course is not the case as coordinator of a SIG. I think it is often the case that committee members look to you as the person having all the answers, which again is not (always) true, and, at least for me, I have found the need to turn to head office for advice often. Another challenge is having to be involved in, and try to resolve, conflict, particularly when your own background is not one which includes a managerial role.

321.
322.
323.
324.

325.
How do you see the SIG in the future? What are your short-/long-term goals?

326.

327.
328.
329.
330.
We now have a new position on our committee, that of Outreach Officer. Our goal in this regard is to access the four corners of the Earth, in particular those in which we have not had, to date, as many contacts and members as we could have. Additionally, following the pandemic, we are starting to arrange face-to-face conferences once again, as we feel our members benefit greatly from the networking and professional exchange opportunities these afford. In fact, we are in the process of working on 2 upcoming face-to-face events, so watch this space… On a more short-term basis, we are always looking to gain more members for
our SIG, as well as committed committee members, so please do get in touch if you would like to join us!

331.
332.
333.
334.

335.
If you could start as IATEFL ESPSIG’s coordinator over again, what would you do differently?

336.

337.
338.
339.
340.
I would assert myself to a greater extent, albeit gently, right from the beginning, and trust that I am acting in the best interests of the SIG and the committee members as well as, of course, our members. Further, time allowing of course: I would try and invest more time in team building activities and developing strategies for conflict resolution as a group. Finally, particularly important when working with people with different cultural backgrounds, I believe, is the necessity to establish a culture of regular feedback, providing constructive feedback to team members and being open to receiving feedback as well. Continuous improvement is essential.

574.
Chris Sowton needs no introduction. He has been working in the field of education, in a wide range of different roles, for 25 years. He has worked in and travelled to different places of the world, and he has also been an active member of the IATEFL GISIG. He has edited and authored many books including 50 steps to improving your academic writing, 50 steps to improving your grammar, Unlock Level 4 Reading and Writing Skills Presentation and many more. Today, we are discussing his new book, Teaching in challenging circumstances, published by Cambridge University Press.

581.
582.
Vicky : First of all, I would like to thank you for agreeing to give this interview and I would also like to welcome you!

583.
584.
585.
586.
Thank you for inviting me. The IATEFL blog is great and it’s nice to be able to share information about my new book with you, and I hope it will be of interest and practical use to IATEFL members.

587.
588.
589.
590.
Vicky : Chris, your book ‘Teaching in Challenging Circumstances’ has just been published. So, what circumstances can we define as ‘challenging’?

591.
592.
593.
594.
In the introduction to TiCC I discuss this very point, quoting our illustrious President Harry Kuchah Kuchah in so doing! Harry makes the point that the term difficult circumstances, which has been more commonly used in the past, may be patronizing and limits ELT professionals to pathologizing these contexts. He asks: who decides what is difficult? This is one of the reasons I use the term challenging circumstances instead. Phrasing it in this way also highlights the pragmatic nature of the book, and recognizes that however hard a teaching situation is, learning can still take place.

595.
596.
597.
598.
In terms of what makes a situation challenging, there may be factors which can contribute to this. For example, insufficient textbooks and learning resources, conflict between the official language of instruction and the teachers’ / students’ ability in that language, the existence of different pedagogical views and belief systems, when teachers and institutions are on the front line of challenging political social change, where teachers are expected to be a ‘catch all’ for wider problems in society, and when teachers are paid poorly (if at all) and they have little job security and cannot unionize. I would also say that teachers can self-define what they personally think are challenging circumstances – if they feel they are challenging, then they are.

599.
600.
601.
602.
Vicky : I assume your initial idea about the book came way before the COVID era, probably from what you experienced as evident educational inequality across the world, which also happens to be the focus of your PhD, if not mistaken. Can this book, though, have practical value to the teachers who have been experiencing the emerging conditions due to the pandemic?

603.
604.
605.
606.
Yes, although the book was conceived pre-COVID, much of it was written in Spring 2020 during the first lockdown in the UK. Many of the book’s big themes are even more relevant in the COVID and post-COVID, for example: making your classroom (whether physical or digital) a safe space; being inclusive and empowering students; teaching writing interactively and collaboratively; checking learning effectively and humanistically; engaging with the local community and environment; and supporting and caring for yourself and others.

607.
608.
609.
610.
Vicky : You state that developing our teaching skills can have the most immediate impact in such circumstances. At the same time, you consider the need for changing the mindset crucial. Would you like to elaborate more on this?

611.
612.
613.
614.
In challenging circumstances, teachers can sometimes feel heavily oppressed by the “big things” weighing them down, such as the textbook, the curriculum, the ministry of education, their school principal. There is a value in recognising that within your classroom, with your students, you have the capacity to make huge and significant changes to those children’s lives – whatever else is going on outside those four walls (and even if there aren’t four walls). I’m not saying this is easy. It’s not. But if you have to be in a classroom, and you have to use that textbook, and you have to listen to that principal – you may as well try to do the best job you can, especially as those 20, 50, 100 students in front of you will only ever get one chance at their education. And for many of them, school may be the best and safest place in their whole world.

615.
616.
617.
618.
Vicky : In your book, you present a lot of practical strategies as you seem to consider them a more concrete and essential way (without overlooking theory, of course) to help teachers in such situations develop their teaching skills and help their students. Can you give us some examples of the kind of such strategies and activities?

619.
620.
621.
622.
I give step-by-step guides to these strategies, explain the rationale behind them, and suggest ways in which they can be used in the classroom. I try to link the strategies to common classroom problems – e.g. using onion-ring grouping as a way of getting boys and girls to work together. I also show how play can be used to improve learning experiences and learning outcomes – e.g. vocabulary tag, running dictation and treasure hunts. Recognising the value of using multilingual strategies in language learning, activities such as simultaneous translation, reconstructing a L2 text from L1 notes and five-minute language takeover celebrates the diversity of the students in your class.

623.
624.
625.
626.
Vicky : Considering how the digital divide has increased currently, due to the mass shift towards online teaching, do you believe it can be eradicated? Or will it lead to deeper inequality?

627.
628.
629.
630.
Digital equity is a huge question, and one which I think will become increasingly important in the years to come. When they begin formal education, children who live in households with lots of books and whose parents read and talk to them have huge advantages over their peers who do not. We’re in a situation now where the same is true for children depending on what hardware or software they can access and how often, whether their electricity supply or Wi-Fi connection is stable, and how much their data costs. Teachers and institutions should ensure that the digital approach used is as accessible to the largest possible number of students. They should ensure that synchronous sessions are not directly sequential, in case students can’t access particular sessions, through no fault of their own. Just throwing a load of old smartphones or tablets at the problem is not going to work. In addition to digital support, there needs to be changes in pedagogy, assessment and educational administration, amongst others.

631.
632.
633.
634.
Vicky : Is it utopian to believe in a more egalitarian future ?

635.
636.
637.
638.
Yes. But we should do it anyway.

711.
I teach English phonetics and British Society and Culture at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. I started teaching while I was a student, and never stopped. Even when I worked for the BBC World Service as a radio producer, translator and announcer at the beginning of my career, I was also in charge of teaching English via radio. I became an IATEFL member on my 24 th birthday, so it has supported me all my professional life; I can’t imagine teaching or thinking about our profession the way I do now if I wasn’t an IATEFLer.

718.
719.
720.
721.
In a nutshell, my work and the work of my team were all about gaining new members and keeping the existing ones happy. For the first three years, I was very involved in creating different membership rates depending on where teachers come from. In this, I was greatly supported by Gerhard Erasmus, who has now succeeded me as Chair of MemCom. In the end, membership rates stayed the same mainly because of Covid and the crisis that followed.

722.
723.
724.
725.
In the last three years, I worked a lot on making the IATEFL Webinar selection more inclusive. I also made sure that the webinar programme ran smoothly. I have my dedicated MemCom team (Syke Annamma Kumaran, Maria-Araxi Sachpazian and Božica Šarić Cvjetković) to thank for hosting the webinars and helping with webinar selections.

726.
727.
728.
729.
I was one of the three volunteers who work on this blog – read articles, suggest edits and in the end publish them online. I immensely enjoyed it. It was great to work with you and Syke on this.

730.
731.
732.
733.
I led the New Ambassadors Working Party on the Board of Trustees. We changed the job description and introduced the first four ambassadors in 2022, and two more this year. It is a scheme that will help promote IATEFL in various parts of the world.

734.
735.
736.
737.
I also started a Working Party which is searching for a new IATEFL patron. It is hard to find a person who will succeed David Crystal: we’ve looked and looked for a suitable patron in the last two years but couldn’t find one for several reasons. What I was also heavily involved in was the Free IATEFL Membership Competition last summer. IATEFL received a donation from Rob Howard, an IATEFL volunteer, that covered eight IATEFL individual memberships. MemCom suggested teachers worldwide write a blog article of 1,000 words for Views, and eight lucky winners would become our members for free. We advertised this in social media – the IATEFL Facebook Group alone has 22,500 members – so we expected a lot of contributions. In the end, we only received eleven articles. It’s popular to moan about how expensive the membership fee is, but, unfortunately, when given a chance to become members for free in exchange for a short article, there was not a lot of interest.

743.

744.
745.
746.
747.
I can think of three big challenges. The first one is very personal: just days before I was to set off for the Harrogate Conference I had a bicycle accident and fractured my shoulder, so I had to stay at home. I wasn’t in Harrogate to attend my last conference as a trustee and couldn’t part with my fellow trustees the way I wished (We were such a good team.), and I couldn’t meet up with many friends and colleagues. It was hard to cope with all that and stay positive. Luckily I could watch the plenaries online, and I attended the AGM via Zoom.

748.
749.
750.
751.
The greatest challenge that involved the Board of Trustees and IATEFL, in general, was the Covid crisis. Trustees usually meet four times a year, but in 2020 and 2021 we had a long online meeting practically every month. It was very hard, but as a fellow trustee remarked recently, we are the team that will go down in the history of IATEFL as the Board that saved the association.

752.
753.
754.
755.
The third challenge happened a year ago when IATEFL suggested that IATEFL- named Associates change their name. It was something that previous Boards didn’t deal with even though it had been on the agenda for years. It was very challenging because there was lots of emotion and history that the Board of Trustees had to deal with in an effective manner. You can read a little about that in the March-April issue of Voices.

756.
757.
758.
759.
Despite these challenges I feel that what I have learned and experienced from being a trustee outweighs the negatives by far.

760.
761.
762.
763.

765.

766.
767.
768.
769.
I used to volunteer as a translator of texts by Tony Samara, my spiritual teacher. Recently Tony’s team contacted me again because they need someone to provide spoken translations in Slovenian for Tony’s meditations online. The work will combine translating and working with voice, which as a former radio person I really like. In a way, it is like coming home.

820.
821.
822.
823.
In the mid-90s, as an Erasmus student in Art history at the University of Siena, I participated in an ambitious online project in Linear Perspective led by my professor, at the time, Dr Kim Veltman (a renowned Leonardo da Vinci scholar) visiting professor from the McLuhan Institute for Culture and Technology. For this project, several International students (I was one of them) translated Dr Veltman’s online dictionary in perspective into various languages (his ambition was to translate it into as many living languages as possible). After studying and researching a vast number of sources for approximately 2 years, I submitted my Greek translation to the Institute and was awarded a distinction for it. As the dictionary is no longer shared online, it was suggested to me I share it on Academia.com trying to preserve it and save it. It can now be found here: https://www.academia.edu/106008348/Online_dictionary_in_linear_perspective_Greek_version_

824.
825.
826.
827.
Through those years I was working and translating the dictionary, and much later on, as well, I made two loyal and precious friends: I had the pleasure of enjoying Dr Veltman’s warm and caring friendship until the very end of his life less than 2 years ago. He had been a loyal and supportive friend, as I had been for him too, for a bit less than 30 years. And I became an even closer friend with my classmate and roommate, art historian Beatrice Jockusch, until this very day. For me, this dictionary played an important role in many ways and, ultimately, opened the door to Goldsmiths College and my Diploma and then the MA in Art history.

In the 3-hour interactive lecture, the students were introduced to the main principles of academic writing as a distinct genre, its variations as well as restrictions. We defined ‘academic writing’, and discussed the steps/stages we follow when planning to write an academic essay, the various integral parts of the essay, the various skills we develop when we learn to use academic writing.

932.
Today, I was invited by the Department of English and German Philology (Poltava V.G. Korolenko National Pedagogical University) for a guest lecture on the topic of Learning and Teaching English Across Cultures: constantly reimagining education in the 21st century.

936.
Invited by Tetyana Lunyova and greeted by Maryna Zuyenko (Director of the Department) and Iryna Kohut (International Relations), I had the opportunity to talk in front of their students about teaching and learning English in a world which seems to be constantly on the move. How has the constant flux of refugees impacted our classrooms? And what is the impact of economic migration and International student mobility? Have Universities employed marketing strategies to attract these International students? How have these conditions shaped the new role of ELF? Internationalisation of universities hand-in-hand with ‘Englishisation’? How has the acceptance of ‘Englishes’ shaped our classrooms? Has COVID fast-forwarded the technological developments in language teaching previously discussed by educators and curriculum designers? Considering the new circumstances, what needs to be taught to be productive members of society in the 21st Century? What is the role of soft skills in English language teaching and how significant are they today?

940.
These were the questions asked in my lecture and to these, I tried to give some answers to demonstrate the new ‘scenery’ in our profession. The discussion that followed was exciting and informative. Special thanks to the hosts for their kind invitation.
