  88. <p>&#8220;This additional testing did not detect any live, infectious virus. These results reaffirm our assessment that the commercial milk supply is safe,&#8221; the FDA said in a <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/alerts-advisories-safety-information/updates-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">statement</a>.</p>
  89. <p>The FDA&#8217;s findings come after the agency disclosed that around 1 in 5 samples of retail milk it had surveyed from around the country had tested positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza, or HPAI H5N1. The U.S. Department of Agriculture this week also <span class="link"><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/milk-bird-flu-cow-testing/" target="_blank" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http="" rel="noopener">ordered testing requirements on cows</a></span> in response to the outbreak, which has affected growing numbers of <span class="link"><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/fresh-egg-producer-us-bird-flu-chickens-texas-michigan-plants/" target="_blank" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http="" rel="noopener">poultry</a></span> and <span class="link"><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bird-flu-hits-us-dairy-cattle-first-time-what-it-means-for-milk-supply/" target="_blank" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http="" rel="noopener">dairy cows</a></span>. </p>

  94. <p>Positive so-called PCR tests in milk can happen as the result of harmless fragments of the virus left over after pasteurization, officials and experts have said, prompting the additional experiments to verify whether or not the virus found in the milk was infectious. Those tests found it was not.</p>
  95. <p>&#8220;The FDA is further assessing retail samples from its study of 297 samples of retail dairy products from 38 states. All samples with a PCR positive result are going through egg inoculation tests, a gold-standard for determining if infectious virus is present,&#8221; the agency said.</p>
  96. <p>While health authorities have said that milk from visibly sick cows is being discarded before entering the supply chain, officials have acknowledged the possibility that cows could be spreading the virus in their raw milk without symptoms or after they have otherwise appeared to recover.</p>
  97. <p>The FDA said it had also tested several samples of retail powdered infant formula and toddler formula, which the agency said were all negative for the virus. </p>
  98. <p>It is unclear what other foods the FDA has tested. An agency spokesperson did not answer questions about whether dairy products like cream, which can be pasteurized differently, have also been surveyed.</p>
  99. <p>No beef cattle have been detected with the virus, the USDA <a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/hpai-dairy-faqs.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">has said</a>, although it remains unclear whether the department has surveyed retail beef products for the virus.</p>
  100. <p>So far, <span class="link"><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/rare-human-case-of-bird-flu-contracted-in-texas-after-direct-contact-with-dairy-cattle/" target="_blank" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http="" rel="noopener">only one human infection</a></span> has been reported this year, in a person who had contact with dairy cattle in Texas.</p>

  108. <p>Though growing evidence is now confirming the safety of pasteurized milk, an additional challenge also remains for health authorities as they grapple with the possibility that dairy industry workers could be unknowingly exposed to the virus. </p>
  109. <p>Unlike <span class="link"><a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bird-flu-outbreak-egg-prices-2024/" target="_blank" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http="" rel="noopener">poultry</a></span>, which quickly die off or are culled after H5N1 infections, cows largely go on to recover after a month or two.</p>
  110. <p>Other animals have also not fared as well during the outbreak: the USDA <a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/hpai-livestock-testing-recommendations.pdf" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">said</a> Friday that deaths and neurological disease had been &#8220;widely reported&#8221; in cats around dairy farms. Officials have said they suspect cats had been drinking leftover raw milk from infected cows.</p>
  111. <p>&#8220;We know that the illness in cattle can go on for several weeks. So that puts workers at an ongoing risk. And thus, the period for monitoring will be longer,&#8221; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention&#8217;s Sonja Olsen told reporters this week. </p>

  150. <p class="">Columbia University said Friday that it has banned a student protest leader from campus after a video resurfaced Thursday that showed them saying Zionists &#8220;don&#8217;t deserve to live.&#8221;</p>
  151. <p class="">A university spokesperson said the student, Khymani James, has been &#8220;banned from campus.&#8221; The university did not provide any further details on the circumstances surrounding the ban or offer any information on disciplinary proceedings. </p>
  152. <p class="">In a statement Friday night about the ongoing protests, Columbia officials said a person whose &#8220;vile videos&#8221; had recently surfaced has been banned. It did not name James. </p>
  153. <p class="">&#8220;Chants, signs, taunts, and social media posts from our own students that mock and threaten to &#8216;kill&#8217; Jewish people are totally unacceptable, and Columbia students who are involved in such incidents will be held accountable,&#8221; the statement said.</p>
  154. <p class="">James, a junior and member of the group Columbia University Apartheid Divest, or CUAD, and a self-identified spokesperson for the student encampment at Columbia, is seen making the comments in a clip of the video verified by NBC News. </p>
  155. <p class="">&#8220;Zionists, they don&#8217;t deserve to live comfortably, let alone, Zionists don&#8217;t deserve to live,&#8221; James said in the video, which has been circulating on social media. </p>
  156. <p class="">&#8220;The same way we&#8217;re very comfortable accepting that Nazis don&#8217;t deserve to live, fascists don&#8217;t deserve to live, racists don&#8217;t deserve to live, Zionists, they shouldn&#8217;t live in this world,&#8221; James added.</p>
  157. <p class="">The resurfaced video comes amid a wave of <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/columbia-protests-live-update-encampment-continue-college-negotiates-p-rcna149111" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pro-Palestinian encampments and protests</a> against <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/israel-hamas-war-gaza-strip-conflict" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Israel&#8217;s war against Hamas</a> in Gaza that have been established on college campuses across the United States. The demonstrations have, at times, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/rep-ilhan-omars-daughter-students-suspended-barnard-college-refusing-l-rcna148445" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resulted in arrests</a> and some pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel protesters have clashed. Jewish students have also reported instances of antisemitism. </p>
  158. <p class=""><a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/columbia-stalemate-continues-student-protesters-still-camped-lawn-rcna149573" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Talks between protesters and administrators</a> about dismantling the encampment at Columbia, which has been in place since April 17, are ongoing, the university has said. Protesters there and on other campuses have<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/business-news/college-protesters-divest-from-israel-what-it-means-rcna149147" target="_blank" rel="noopener"> called on schools to divest</a> from companies that do business with Israel.</p>
  159. <p class="">James, who uses he/she/they pronouns, said <a href="https://twitter.com/KhymaniJames/status/1783731034330185905" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a statement</a> posted to X on Friday that their comments were &#8220;wrong&#8221; and that they &#8220;regret&#8221; them, adding &#8220;every member of our community deserves to feel safe without qualification.&#8221;</p>
  160. <p class="">James added that they wish they had said instead that, &#8220;Zionism is an ideology that necessitates the genocide of Palestinian people. I oppose that in the strongest terms.&#8221; </p>
  161. <p class="">According to the <a href="https://www.adl.org/resources/backgrounder/zionism" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anti-Defamation League</a>, &#8220;Zionism is the movement for the self-determination and statehood for the Jewish people in their ancestral homeland, the land of Israel.&#8221; </p>
  162. <p class="">It does not necessarily refer to Jewish people as a whole, as Jews do not have to be Zionists. </p>
  163. <p class="">James said in the statement that the comments were made before they were involved with CUAD and that both it and the Gaza Solidarity Encampment &#8220;have made clear&#8221; that their comments on the video &#8220;are not in line with the CUAD community guidelines.&#8221; </p>
  164. <p class="">&#8220;Those words do not represent CUAD,&#8221; James said. &#8220;They also do not represent me.&#8221; </p>
  165. <p class="">It’s unclear whether James is still serving a a spokesperson. James did not appear to be at the protests Friday. </p>
  166. <p class="">CUAD said in an Instagram post earlier Friday that James&#8217; &#8220;words in January do not reflect his views, our values, nor the encampment&#8217;s community agreements&#8221; and that the group remains &#8220;committed to our peaceful protest and will continue to call for the University to divest from the Israel&#8217;s brutal genocide against Palestinians.&#8221; </p>

  203. <p>In his autobiography Spare, Harry said he killed 25 Taliban fighters while serving in the Army &#8211; a claim that led counter-terrorism officers to say he might need extra security.</p>
  204. <p>Royal expert, Maureen Callahan, said her father was a veteran of the Vietnam War and through him, she learnt soldiers never talk about what they saw and did while serving.</p>
  205. <p>But since Harry&#8217;s revelations in Spare, the royal commentator fears the safety of soldiers in the region may have been compromised.</p>

  245. <p class="">Charles “will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation,” the palace said in a statement. The palace also revealed that the king’s medical team is “very encouraged” by the progress of his recovery but did not disclose any further details.</p>
  246. <p class="">Joined by Queen Camilla, the king will visit an unnamed cancer center Tuesday and meet medical specialists and patients.</p>
  247. <p class="">“This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements his majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead,” the palace said in a statement. He will also receive Japanese Emperor Naruhito for a state visit in June.</p>
  248. <p class="">Ahead of the anniversary of Charles’ coronation May 6, he and the queen “remain deeply grateful for the many kindnesses and good wishes they have received from around the world throughout the joys and challenges of the past year,” the statement added. </p>
  249. <p class="">Charles, 75, has been restricting himself to private duties since being <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/king-charles-cancer-diagnosis-royal-health-speculation-rcna137414" target="_blank" rel="noopener">diagnosed in February with an unspecified form of cancer</a>. Doctors <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/king-charles-cancer-caught-early-prince-harry-flies-home-rcna137410" target="_blank" rel="noopener">discovered the cancer</a> after the king was hospitalized with an enlarged prostate, although the palace says that he does not have prostate cancer.</p>
  250. <p class="">The king’s “treatment program will continue” and “doctors are  sufficiently pleased with the progress made so far,” the palace said Friday. “It is early to say” how much longer the king’s medical treatment will last, it said, but his medical team is &#8220;very encouraged by the progress made so far and remain positive about the king’s continued recovery.”</p>

Weeks of speculation over her health and whereabouts were only fueled when her team posted a photo that had been manipulated by the princess.</p>

But both she and Charles have declined to specify either what type of cancer they have or details about their prognosis.</p>

  332. <p>The arena originally announced on Monday that Kay&#8217;s performances would instead take place on 29 and 30 April, with Kay saying he was &#8220;truly gutted&#8221; by the delay. However, the comedy gigs will now move again, to late next month.</p>
  333. <p>He wrote: &#8220;Tickets will be transferred, or refunds given if the new dates aren&#8217;t suitable. It&#8217;s very disappointing but your safety is important, and I won&#8217;t compromise that.&#8221;</p>

  440. <p class="">The <a href="https://www.fda.gov/food/alerts-advisories-safety-information/updates-highly-pathogenic-avian-influenza-hpai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Food and Drug Administration said Thursday</a> that traces of the bird flu virus have been found in 1 in 5 samples of pasteurized milk, providing a more detailed picture of how much of the milk supply has been affected.</p>
  441. <p class="">The tested milk came from a nationally representative sample, with more of the positive results coming from milk in areas with infected herds of dairy cows, the FDA said. A spokesperson declined to say how many samples were tested.</p>
  442. <p class="">As of Thursday, bird flu had been detected in <a href="https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections/livestock" target="_blank" rel="noopener">33 herds in eight states</a>: Idaho, Kansas, Michigan, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota, Ohio and Texas.</p>
  443. <p class="">Richard Webby, an influenza virologist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, said the number of positive samples is consistent with numbers he&#8217;s reviewed from smaller sample sets.</p>
  444. <p class="">&#8220;But the number does seem high if the number of infected farms is indeed only 30-odd,” Webby wrote in an email. &#8220;Clearly there are more infected animals out there than being reported.&#8221; </p>
  445. <p class="">The FDA first said Tuesday that it had found <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/bird-flu-virus-found-pasteurized-milk-though-officials-maintain-supply-rcna149084" target="_blank" rel="noopener">viral fragments in commercially sold milk</a>, triggering the Agriculture Department to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/usda-orders-dairy-cows-tested-bird-flu-moved-state-lines-rcna149121" target="_blank" rel="noopener">issue a federal order</a> mandating that all dairy cows be tested for bird flu before they are transported between states. </p>
  446. <p class="">Health officials maintain — and experts agree — that pasteurized milk is safe to drink. The FDA detected small pieces of the virus in milk, not live, infectious virus. </p>
  447. <p class="">“Right now, all indication is that pasteurization is effective,” said Dr. Andrew Bowman, a veterinary epidemiologist at Ohio State University.</p>
  448. <p class="">The FDA said Tuesday, “To date, we have seen nothing that would change our assessment that the commercial milk supply is safe.” It is conducting studies on the effects of pasteurization on the bird flu virus in milk and expects to release results in the coming days.</p>
  449. <p class="">The virus, a strain of bird flu called H5N1, is concerning to public health officials because of its high fatality rate: More than half of the people who have contracted the illness have died, according to the <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/flu/avianflu/hpai/hpai-interim-recommendations.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention</a>.</p>
  450. <p class="">However, the virus does not spread easily between people, and while it can cause severe illness, the only two cases reported in the U.S. — one in the current outbreak and one in 2022 — have been mild.</p>
  451. <p class="endmark">The concern is that it could one day mutate in a way that makes it spread between people more easily.</p>
