It was a far cry from the old method of passing out and collecting index cards with student information, and then taking the time to enter contact information myself into Excel. Can you believe I used to call this convenient? It was just time consuming enough that I really wanted a better, more efficient alternative.

The layout of the website itself is rather minimal, and navigation is a breeze. As for user-friendliness, creating quizzes is easy and straight-forward. You can also import a quiz in one of two ways: from a shared quiz or from an Excel file. The latter requires you to download one or both of their templates (depending on your version of Excel) and enter the information that way.

There are two free smartphone apps: Socrative Teacher and Socrative Student. They offer the same functions that the website does. Socrative 2.0 is in development. It brings a new way of navigating the site, but right now it seems that there are some bugs that need fixing. I wouldn't try it out just yet, as it appears you need to create a new account to use it (how does that make sense?).

The survey I gave includes questions like telephone numbers, email addresses, a written agreement to the syllabus, if they have internet access at home, and identifying the type of learner they are among other things. It took about 5-10 minutes for everyone to take it, and when they were done I was able to instantly download all of the student data as an Excel file for super easy access!

If anyone is interested in checking out or using this awesome tool I have shared my student survey publicly. There are lots of tips on that page!

In my class: I tried this as an incentive system for what was possibly an insubstantial amount of time. It did not work for my needs, but I would be willing to try it again. I needed something in which I could multi-manage a large number of students and be able to write and enter notes on behavior, rather than pick from a set. ClassDojo could have great potential in the classroom where behavioral issues are not a persistent issue, where the teacher can quickly assess a student (positively or negatively) through a couple of clicks. To use ClassDojo to get the most out of it and remain consistent, I would suggest using it for a full cycle during each class - meaning, award each student once.

In the works:
On the Class Dojo boards educators are sending in requests for improving the service such as: include partner/group picker, adding comments, student access between all classes, device syncing, avatar animations, etc.

Teachers
-Create and archive multiple classes.
-Attendance taker (web only)
-Random button! With Cel.ly these two services are combined, look better, and are still user-friendly. Remind101
I have signed up with both services to check them out. Remind 101 has a minimal and simplistic interface, with the sole purpose of mass text. The thing I really like about it is that it prompts the user to enter their name, so students/parents can be easily identifiable as part of the recipients. Cel.ly is slightly more packed: more customization options for public/private, mass/personal/chat text, online/cellphone use, and polls. Honestly, I like them both. Minimalism or customization? That is the question.

Real world-application!! - A few weeks ago, I was able to do a small classroom presentation/ professional development activity in one of my classes. I presented the book "Digital Teaching Platforms - Customizing Classroom Learning for Each Student" edited by Chris Dede and John Richards. After a short presentations of the book's topics, I had my classmates participate in a think-pair-share activity with a twist! The twist occurred during the pair and share as they texted to a cell chat I created hosted by Cel.ly. As they were discussing in pairs, they texted their thoughts and questions, which (were supposed to stream on the board) for everyone to see. As new messages started streaming on the board from other groups, it would give each micro-group-pair a way to participate in the larger discussion while still keeping it to a micro-sized pair. Rewind. Due to technical difficulties (aren't there always some?) the interwebz died, and I was unable to stream the "cell" conversation. However, because it is foremost a texting service, my peers were still able to send and receive texts, so they didn't miss out on the conversation, even though I couldn't stream it.

PSSST If you've read this far then get excited about the Cel.ly iPhone app! If you have ever seen young children with a tablet in their hands, the result is stunning and they become immersed in seconds. Taking advantage of that level of engagement, iTooch is educational and incorporates touch-screen technology to get students to understand, exercise, and master several topics across many grade levels. iTooch has something for every kind of learner: fun visuals and sounds, appropriately worded questions for each grade level, reading/writing practice, touch-screen interaction for the kinesthetic learner, and can be approached by a single student or in pairs. Students mastering the topics can receive extra hints or different levels of difficulty for scaffolding. Each title contains several topics and related exercises as well as lesson overviews and concepts that can aid the teacher as well as the student.

Best of all, you don't have to be in a classroom to take advantage of this great educational tool. Since it is available as an app, anyone with an iPhone or iPad can access it and start learning, reviewing, and just keeping sharp!

Features

iTooch Elementary: math, science, ELA and health; ranging from grades 3-5, available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch

iTooch Jr High School - subjects math, ELA, health; grades 3-5; available on iPad

iTooch SAT (awaiting iPad release) - subjects math, critical reading, biology, US History

iTooch English (awaiting iPad release) - TOEFL Prep

Each title/section/subject are priced at 5.99. What Livebinders can do that a physical binder cannot, is that it's made to organize information found on the web such as websites, videos, and images, plus you can customize it by adding your own notes and documents. It's easy to collaborate with others on a joint Livebinder in order to pool resources and presentation materials.

Uses: One use I would love to incorporate in my own teaching is the use of Livebinders as an e-portfolio for students. They could use it to sort all of the digital content they have created, as well as post any other projects or presentations to it for easy access and sharing. As a collaboration project in ELA, student could do a book study focusing on several themes or aspects of a book, and put it all together in a comprehensive binder for publishing, sharing, and evaluation.

Resources: With the implementation of the CCSS framework, new livebinders are popping up with fantastic CCSS resources for all subjects. Do a quick search for "Common Core" + your content area and discover some fantastic materials! Traditionally, when a timeline is assigned as a classroom activity, it is expected that this will involve a gathering and use of paper materials, scissors, markers, glue, and magazines, not to mention - the high probability of the classroom ending up a mess. Dipity provides an alternative to that, and it covers the technology component that is integrated throughout most state standards (like the CCSS). The web integration of this app contains a much better function of resource-gathering and quality (photos, videos, texts, links to other pages) than sifting through any magazine. Dipity can be created and edited individually or by groups, and displayed and embedded in class blogs or just about anywhere else, creating a valuable audience of peers, parents, teachers, and others.

In recent news, the teacher strike in Chicago has been something that gained a lot of attention. The Catalyst Chicago journal has published a Dipity timeline showing the process and negotiations that took place before, during, and after the strike. Take a look!

Applications
For Students

ELA / ESL / foreign languages: literacy timeline showcasing important life literacy events (should be fun and interesting with the ethnically diverse class)

Ice Breaker or "About Me" introduction activity

Goals: pick a general future date on the timeline to accomplish some goals by (like "Graduate high school!")

pick the day's date and name personal expectations of the class, general interests, something fun they remember doing in a class, and something boring

make timelines of books / novels / authors' lives / character's lives / historical events / economics / sports / scientific discovery or development / the possibilities for customizing this are endless!

For Teachers

Ice Breaker: introduce yourself to students with an "About Me!" I wanted to dedicate this first post to responding to this through introducing a simple and user friendly web 2.0 tool, Voki. This can be a valuable tool for ESL and foreign language teachers, as well as for teachers of literacy. Teachers can use the basic Voki account in their instruction materials, or upgrade to a classroom account where students can make their own avatars and engage in their own writing, listening, and reading, and speaking. This type of engagement adds a new dimensions to enhancing courses. The features Voki integrates no doubt play an important role in language literacy and provide students with examples of language in action.

User Friendliness and Features: Voki is in its basic form a talking avatar.

As far as avatar creation goes, you can choose your avatar's look from several sets of features: clothes, accessories, backgrounds, and voices

Anyone can create an avatar and share it regardless of having an account set up or not

Share links through email, direct links, embed code for your site, and social media publishing, and educational platform publishing

Record your own voice through a microphone, by phone, or choose text-to-speech

Integrated stop, pause, replay, and edit features

Text-to-speech available in several languages

Voki Classroom allows the creation and management of content for class accounts ($2.50/month or $29.95 /year)

Can you add to the following uses? 21stcenturyedtech.com suggests 20 more ways to use Voki in classrooms.
For teachers:

assigning homework

differentiating on tests or quizzes

introducing a new lesson or activity

For students:

ice breaker activity

giving a speech

reviewing/showcasing a novel, important figure, or event

giving voice to foreign language (and other) presentations

compose music or poetry

Guides to get you started and inspired:

Avatar-Making Guide by Jennifer Barnett

Classroom Getting Started Guide and Classroom User Guide by Voki

Lesson Plans: Voki provides you with an easily searchable database of lesson plans to use or get inspired by

Let's talk about it: Let's make this interesting! If you would like to create a banner that links to this page (i.e. this validation result), do the following:

 1. Download the "valid RSS" banner.

 2. Upload the image to your own server. (This step is important. Please do not link directly to the image on this server.)

 3. Add this HTML to your page (change the image src attribute if necessary):

If you would like to create a text link instead, here is the URL you can use:
