18.

Provided by the Hunting Committee of the ESSFTA The English Springer Spaniel is a dog that enjoys hunting; and the Springer's love for its work shows, especially in its lively, merry tail action, which is particularly animated when the dog is on game. The Springer quarters in a brisk, bustling manner, covering ground within gun range, always showing great desire and no fear of cover. The dog has a bold, hard driving flush that puts the bird up as quickly as possible to prevent it from running out of the handler's range. Speed, for speed's sake alone, is not required; but pottering is not to be tolerated. When the Springer is hunting and seeking body scent, its head is generally up, and experienced dogs use wind to advantage. When trailing, the Springer has its head down, seeking foot scent. Trailing is fast and efficient, yet always under control. Whether on land or water, retrieving is also fast and efficient, always carried out with enthusiasm. Throughout its performance, the Springer should demonstrate its "bidability, " especially in its responsiveness to soft, quiet handling. Dog and handler should always perform as a team.

These Puppies belongs to one of our members A very Cute Springer Spaniel Puppy video. Here is George Springing in the fields set to music Here is George searching for his ball Now for his second appearance, chasing the ever elusive ball This one is of Dixie and Shelby leaping a great height in to the water. 45.

I am not a veterinarian, nor do I represent myself as one on the internet. But I hope that my experiences as a Springer lover might be helpful to someone else in addressing grass awn symptoms in their working dog. We have had four of our own dogs suffer grass awn infections, one with two separate incidents. Jessie and Tai have had surgeries for pyothorax, Tai and Roz have had abscesses removed. When Tigger showed clear symptoms of a pyothorax in 2007, we made the very difficult decision not to treat him because his age and general health suggested that he would not have a positive outcome. Actually, when I dig even further back in my memory, we had two other dogs that were treated for localized abscesses with drains and antibiotics (one later developed a fullblown pyothorax). When the abscess issue first cropped up, this seemed the more normal course of treatment, but perhaps this was more a lack of knowledge of the full extent of the problem than a different syndrome. Knowing what I know now, I’m not sure I would feel that this approach was aggressive enough in light of our subsequent experiences. The increase in the number of grass-awn related infections appears to coincide with the increase in planting of Canada wild rye in conservation mixes in approximately 2001. Seeds recovered from two dogs in Minnesota in 2007 were determined to be Canada wild rye. Several additional samples recovered from dogs in Wisconsin were recently submitted for identification. I have provided details of symptoms and treatments of our own dogs below. Here are the points that I would stress to anyone who thinks their dog might be affected by a grass awn. First, be aware that the symptoms of a grass awn infection can be very vague and nonspecific. It’s very important to be aware of your dog’s behavior, both when s/he is healthy and when s/he is not. If you have concerns that your dog just isn’t him or herself, consider a visit to your veterinarian and make sure that your concerns are taken seriously. These infections can go from barely noticeable to critical in an extremely short period of time. Many veterinarians, particularly those east of the Mississippi that do not have exposure to foxtail infections on a regular basis, or who do not have a lot of working dog clients, will not have a grass awn infection high up on their diagnostic radar. Your dog surviving a grass awn infection may well depend on you being an observant and informed owner, and you may need to educate your veterinarian. Refer him or her to the Grass Awn Project website and/or print out one or more of the articles from the site to put in your file, preferably before you have urgent need of that information.

 54.

The best part about owning a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is having fun together. Make your Cavalier Spaniel your constant companion and take him with you whereve you go! Playtime with your Pet It's the easiest thing in the world to have fun with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. The Cavalier Spaniel breed has plenty of energy, intelligence and a healthy dose of curiosity - all the makings of a great playmate. Playtime with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel doesn't have to be complicated or fancy. Though Cavaliers love toys, they love 'homemade' toys just as much as the store-bought variety. Let's start with the simplest, easiest ways to spend happy time with your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are adventurous. Bentley likes nothing better than to get out of the house and explore the neighborhood. He loves to smell new smells, meet new people and sniff his favorite puppy pals. Bentley loves just to chase the leaves that blow down the street! A few words of caution. Always keep your pet on a leash. First of all, it's required by law in most communities. Secondly, you don't want to run the risk that your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will get loose and be hurt. Bentley would blindly run across the street to chase a squirrel any day! Next, when your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy is small, be careful about the other dogs you meet. Until your pet has had all his vaccinations (at about 6 months old), you want to ensure that he doesn't contract anything from another dog. Avoid taking a very young puppy with you to a pet store where you will likely meet other dogs that you can't be sure have been properly vaccinated. How far can you walk with your Cavalier King Charels Spaniel? Farther than you think! Veterinarian, Dr. Joseph Bonaquisiti, takes 10 mile hikes with his Cavalier! But you want to work up your Cavalier Spaniel's stamina gradually over time, if you're interested in long distances. Watch your pet to be sure he doesn't get over-heated or over-exposed to the sun. (Yes, dogs get heat-stroke, too!) Carry a water bottle for your companion and take a rest in the shade if your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is panting or slowing down. The key word in "Cavalier King Charles Spaniel" is spaniel. This breed seems to have the traits you'd expect from a sporting dog. Bentley never had to be "taught" to play fetch. It's was instinctual that if he brought the ball back, someone would throw it for him again! What to throw? Almost anything! Your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will happily chase balls, sticks, frisbees and toys of any kind. Just make sure you don't throw anything that would hurt your pet's mouth. (Rocks are not a good choice.) Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies are so small that a tennis ball is probably too big for them to retrieve. If you can't find a smaller rubber ball to play with, try a rope toy or small stuffed toy. Keep the tennis balls until your Cavalier Spaniel is full grown. Try an over-sized ball, like a beach or basketball. You'll laugh till you cry watching your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel attempt to control a ball that is several times bigger than he is! Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppies wrestle with their littermates, so your pet will occasionally enjoy tussling with you, too! Start off gently, and be sure to teach your puppy a few words that will help you maintain control of the play. For example, rather than saying a generic "No!" when you want to stop wrestling with your pet, try saying "Enough" or "Settle Down" to let him know that the game is over. Here, too, it is helpful to remain in control of the game. Don't allow your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to pull on just anything. Restrict Tug-of-war games to designated toys. If your pet begins to tug on the furniture, for example, you will want to quickly correct the behavior and give him an "acceptable" toy. Tug-of-War is one of Bentley's favorite games. He even plays it by himself! Lindsey tied an elastic bunji cord to the deck railing. Bentley pulls the cord and the elastic cord pulls back! Hours of solo fun! It's helpful to teach your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel the "drop" command. Occasionally, when you're playing Tug-of-War with your pet, say "Drop!" and remove the toy from his mouth until he learns that he is supposed to stop playing and relinquish the toy on command. Reward your dog for dropping on command by throwing the toy so he can fetch it. One other note about wrestling with your Cavalier Spaniel. It is natural for puppies to grab you with their mouths. But there is a difference between "mouthing" and "biting." It's okay for your puppy to grab your hands with his teeth when you're wrestling, but if he bares down too hard, you should snatch your hand away quickly and yell "Ouch!" loudly. This will startle your puppy and make it clear than he was being too rough. Teach your pet the boundaries early, before he becomes an adult dog that may be more difficult to control. Buy a bottle of children's soap bubbles from your local drug store and prepare for hours of fun, watching your pet try to burst the bubbles by jumping up to "catch" them in his mouth! Bubble Hound Bentley's all-time favorite game is catching soap bubbles. He sits below the shelf where the bottle of bubbles is kept and whines pitifully until someone agrees to blow bubbles for him! By the way, if you don't mind soap bubbles inside your house, this is a great game for an elderly person or someone confined to a wheelchair to play with your dog. Your Cavalier King Charles will do all the work as long as you have breath to blow bubbles! You don't have to spend a lot of money buying toys at the local pet store to keep your pet happily entertained. Instead of buying a rope toy from the pet store, take an old sock, tie a knot in it and throw it for your puppy. He'll love it! If you have any empty plastic containers (pill bottles, food containers, shampoo bottles, etc.), wash them thoroughly, remove any labels, and place a penny inside them to make a homemade rattle. Bentley adores plastic containers and creates quite a racket chasing them all over the house! (Note: keep an eye on these homemade rattles. If your Cavalier King Charles Spaniel begins to chew through the container, take the toy away from him. You don't want your pet to swallow any bits of plastic.) How about spending some time in the kitchen making homemade dog biscuits for your favorite friend? You can find lots of free recipes for dog treats on the internet, but here's one taken from Dog Fancy Magazine (February 1999) to get you started: Canine Carrot Cookies 2 cups carrots, boiled and pureed 2 eggs 2 Tablespoons of garlic, minced 2 cups all purpose flour (or rice flour or wheat flour) 1 cup rolled oats 1/4 cup wheat germ Combine carrots, eggs and garlic. Mix until smooth. Add dry ingredients. Roll out on heavily floured surface and cut into bars or desired shapes. Bake at 300 degrees for 45 minutes or to desired crunchiness. The centers will continue to harden as they cool. Brush with egg white before baking for a glossy finish.

 81.

Updated Statement on Tail Docking and Natural (Undocked) Tails The United States' English Springer Spaniel breed standard states, in its opening paragraph, that Springers are ".a medium-sized sporting dog with a compact body and a docked tail." Breed historians note that Spaniels have been depicted with docked tails since the 16th century. Springer enthusiasts, both field and conformation, dock tails for utilitarian function and to reinforce the breed's moderate, balanced outline, consistent with proper breed type as defined in the standard. Conformation, field, and performance English Springers are customarily and routinely docked in the United States. However, English Springers imported to this country from abroad are not. English Springers with natural, undocked tails may be shown according to AKC rules. While an undocked (natural) tail may not be customary in the U.S., it is acceptable. The ESSFTA does request that while it may be a deviation from the standard, it is weighted appropriately and the determination of your awards is by the assimilation of the overall positive characteristics of your exhibits. The breed standard's description of correct tail carriage - "carried horizontally or slightly elevated" - should be applied when judging both docked and undocked tails. Tails -whether docked or natural - should not be carried more than "horizontally or slightly elevated." English Springers that demonstrate incorrect tail carriage should be faulted. From the U.S. breed standard: The tail is carried horizontally or slightly elevated and displays a characteristic lively, merry action, particularly when the dog is on game. A clamped tail (indicating timidity or undependable temperament) is to be faulted, as is a tail carried at a right angle to the backline in Terrier fashion. Approved by the English Springer Spaniel Field Trial Association

 99.

The time had come to enter the ring. Toby and I took our place in line - I purposely moved him near the back of the line to give Bobby more time to make it to the ring before Toby was judged. Finally, it was our turn, still no Bobby in sight. My heart was pounding! I moved Toby into position for the judge to examine - as I had done hundreds of times before. We got through the examination, and then we had to gait. Whew, Toby performed beautifully! Still no Bobby. When the judge, Joseph Faigel, had completed his examination he stepped back and looked at his large group of competitors. He began to make a cut - he narrowed his group by pulling some dogs to the center of the ring. Toby and I were pulled - but I wondered - was this the good group or the losing group? I looked around, saw all the top names in the center along with me, and breathed a sigh of relief - we made the cut! Before Judge Faigel did anything further, Bobby arrived at ringside and politely asked the ring steward if he could enter and take his place with Toby. The steward asked the judge for permission, it was granted. I felt as if the calvary had arrived! I handed Toby to Bobby and quickly exited the ring. The judge continued on with his decision making process. My heart was pounding as I stood alone at ringside - my group of friends were sitting in their seats where I had planned to be before learning that I would have to show Toby myself. The judge made a second cut and excused more dogs from the ring, Toby was still in contention. Finally Judge Faigel had everyone remaining gait around the ring - he had made up his mind.I couldn't look.a gasp and a cheer went up from the crowd - Judge Faigel had pointed at Toby and Bobby! We won! We won Best of Breed at Westminster KC!! I cheered, I cried, I jumped up and down in my borrowed sneakers!! But the excitement wasn't over yet.now we had to wait until that evening to compete in the Sporting Group. But there was a problem - Bobby had also won the Breed with his Vizsla, who he had been showing longer than Toby. That meant he could not show Toby in the Group and would actually be competing against Toby with the Vizsla. We had to find another handler. Bobby asked the well respected handler (and now AKC judge) Damara Bolte to handle Toby in the Sporing Group that night. She agreed. Evening came, judging time arrived, and this time I was in my seat with my friends watching the glorious sporting dogs compete in the group. The judge was Mrs. Augustus Riggs IV. Her entry of Best of Breed dogs represented a whopping 541 sporting dogs that had been entered that day. She could pick only four to win a group placement. And pick she did! She placed a top winning Irish Setter first, another top winning Labrador Retriever second, then she pointed to a beautiful black and white English Springel Spaniel proudly gaiting around the ring with his brand new handler for third!! Bobby ultimately placed fourth with his Vizsla. Words cannot describe the range of pride, love and emotions I felt when Toby took his position in third place to receive his Westminster Sporting Group rosette! Toby - American & Canadian Ch. Linbrook's Pound Sterling - the founding sire of Northgate English Springer Spaniels - he is behind every dog that we have bred - won Best of Breed and a Sporting Group 3 at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show at Madison Square Garden! Toby became the first black and white English
