The BAYC NFT collectibles is a collection of 10,000 Bored Ape NFTs and just recently the project sales volume has risen exponentially as it rests just below Cryptopunks with $49.5 million in sales last week. Moreover, BAYC’s official Twitter account revealed the project donated 66.45 ether (over $200K) to Orangutan Outreach.
42. Bored Ape Yacht Club Sees Massive Sales This Week, Donates Over 66 Ether to Charity
43. On August 3, Bitcoin.com News reported on the Cryptopunks project and how one punk owner wanted to sell a rare Cryptopunks NFT for $91 million. At the time, Cryptopunks held the top position in terms of seven-day NFT sales, and today the NFT project still holds the top spot with $117 million sold last week.
45. However, the Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) project has skyrocketed to the second position this week capturing $49.5 million in weekly sales. Over 1,500 BAYC NFTs were sold during the week and just recently five BAYC NFTs sold for over $500K per unit. The $500K BAYCs sold this week include Bored Ape #7345, #7090, #8650, and Bored Ape #8650.
47. This week the project has also announced it donated over $200K worth of ether or 66.45 ETH to the New York-based Orangutan Outreach nonprofit. The company is all about protecting the “red apes” and focuses on orangutans located in Southeast Asia and the Indonesian island of Sumatra. BAYC detailed that it leveraged the Giving Block to donate to the organization.
48. “Good afternoon, apes. We just donated 66.45 ETH (~208k USD) to Orangutan Outreach via the Giving Block,” the Twitter account said.
50. The BAYC project’s NFTs also gives owners access to a gated community of NFT ape collectors. For instance, owning a BAYC gives access to the Swamp Club and fellow apes also started a follow group #apefollowape on Twitter. BAYC also launched “The Bathroom” which lets apes leverage a pixel paint canvas. The official BAYC Twitter account has 48.7K followers to date and the project’s follower count has grown exponentially during the last few weeks.
52. Rumor has it Mark Cuban owns his an ape similarly to the famous people who allegedly own Cryptopunks like the rapper Jay-Z. Allegedly, the chairman of Vaynerx, Gary Vaynerchuk has shared a screenshot of his ape. It’s not the first time BAYC donated to animal charities as the project sent funds to a slew of animal-centric nonprofits on June 30.
53. “It’s an exciting day for us here at the BAYC,” the project tweeted at the time. “We just donated 135 ETH (currently ~$291,000) to animal charities! We started the Bored Ape Kennel Club collection to reward members and give back, but never imagined we’d have this level of impact. Thank you, apes.”
81.
By John McCrank

  82.
NEW YORK (Reuters) -The dollar fell on Wednesday after U.S. inflation data showed consumer price increases eased in July, taking some pressure off the Federal Reserve to begin scaling back the monthly bond purchases that are part of its toolbox to support the economic recovery.

  83.
The , which measures the greenback against a basket of other major currencies, was down 0.17% at 92.915 at 3:05 p.m. ET (1905 GMT). (Graphic: World FX rates https://tmsnrt.rs/2RBWI5E )

  84.
Earlier, the U.S. currency hit 93.195, its highest since April 1, and not far off of its 2021 high of 93.439, but it sold off after data showed the consumer price index rose 0.5% last month after climbing 0.9% in June. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the CPI rose 0.3% after increasing 0.9% in June.

  85.
Economists polled by Reuters had forecast overall CPI would rise 0.5% and core CPI 0.4%.

  86.
While prices are still rising, the Fed has said it expects inflationary pressures to moderate over time as supply catches up with demand following months of COVID-19 lockdowns.

  87.
“The CPI report was enough to cause a bit of profit taking for the U.S. dollar, but at the end of the day, it’s not a game changer for the Fed,” said Kathy Lien, managing director at BK Asset Management. “They’re still going to be announcing taper,” likely within the next six weeks.

  88.
The greenback had enjoyed a lift from last week’s better-than-expected U.S. jobs data, as well as from remarks by Fed officials about tapering bond purchases and, eventually, raising rates, sooner than policymakers elsewhere.

  89.
Looking forward, the Fed will depend on data when it comes to the timing of the dialing back of its asset purchases, said Edward Moya, senior market analyst at OANDA.

  90.
“It’s all going to be all about next month’s employment report and if that does not impress, tapering, as far September goes, might even get pushed out towards the end of the year,” he said.

  91.
In Europe, investor sentiment has declined, with a survey showing a third straight month of deterioration in Germany as rising global COVID-19 cases keep markets on edge.

  92.
“Investors have to take on board the possibility of news on Fed tapering at a time when COVID is still very apparent in various parts of the world,” said Rabobank analyst Jane Foley.

  93.
“The consequence of this is likely to be a firmer dollar,” she added, especially if the euro breaches its 2021 low.

  94.
The euro gained 0.16% against the greenback, to 1.17395, following six straight sessions of losses and having fallen as low as 1.1706 in early deals in Europe, near the year’s low of $1.1704.

  95.
Sterling gained 0.2% to 1.38645 against the dollar, pulling back from a two-week low.

  96.
The yen was up 0.12% at 110.445, after dropping for five consecutive sessions against the dollar.

  97.
South Korea reported a record number of COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, while outbreaks in China, Southeast Asia and Australia grow steadily.

  98.
The Australian dollar and the New Zealand dollar , seen as riskier currencies, rose after the U.S. CPI report, last up 0.33% and 0.5% respectively.

  99.
In cryptocurrencies, bitcoin touched $46,787.60, its highest since May 17. was last up 1.5% at $46,304.54, while ether, the second-biggest cryptocurrency, was up 2.7% at $3,226.18.

  122.
Investing.com – The dollar was down on Thursday morning in Asia. However, the U.S. currency held near a four-month peak as the U.S.’ latest inflation data tempered bets of an earlier-than-expected tightening of its monetary policy.

  123.
The that tracks the greenback against a basket of other currencies inched down 0.02% to 92.898 by 1:08 AM ET (5:08 AM GMT). It fell 0.19% on Wednesday when it rose as high as 93.195, a level not seen since Apr. 1.

  124.
The pair was steady at 110.41.

  125.
The pair inched down 0.09% to 0.7365, with Australia’s Canberra entering a lockdown and Sydney aiming to tighten its existing restrictive measures. The pair edged down 0.11% to 0.7033.

  126.
The pair inched down 0.04% to 6.4757% and the pair inched down 0.01% to 1.3871.

  127.
Data released in the U.S. on Wednesday said the rose 0.3% month-on-month in July, a pace that was slower than expected. With the labor market recovery a condition for the U.S. Federal Reserve to begin asset tapering and hiking interest rates, the debate on whether the current inflationary pressures are transitory continues.

  128.
Kansas City Fed President said on Wednesday that conditions are already in place to begin asset tapering, thanks to the current spike in inflation, recent labor market improvements and the expectation for continued strong demand.

  129.
Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan told CNBC that the Fed should announce its timeline for asset tapering in September and begin the process a month later. Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin told Reuters it could take a few more months before the U.S. job market is sufficiently recovered.

  130.
However, some investors still expect the Fed to announce a tapering of stimulus within 2021, potentially as soon as September.

  131.
“The general consensus emanating from the Fed currently is that the time to taper asset purchases is nearing,” Commonwealth Bank of Australia (OTC:) strategist Kim Mundy wrote in a research note.

  132.
“Growing expectations for a near-term taper can support the dollar,” the note added, with Mundy expecting an asset tapering announcement in September depending on the strength of August’s labor market data.

  157.
By Kevin Buckland

  158.
TOKYO (Reuters) – The dollar held near a four-month peak against major peers on Thursday after retreating overnight as a cooling in consumer inflation tempered bets for an earlier tightening of U.S. monetary policy.

  159.
The , which measures the greenback against a basket of six rivals, was little changed at 92.881, following a 0.19% decline from Wednesday, when it rose as high as 93.195, a level not seen since April 1.

  160.
“Further slippage in coming days (for the dollar is) likely, but it’s unlikely to develop into anything meaningful,” Westpac strategists wrote in a client note.

  161.
The dollar index “should continue to find support in the 91.5-92.0 area” and “could see new highs beyond 93.50,” when taper talk gathers momentum later this quarter, they wrote.

  162.
The euro was little changed at $1.17435 after retreating from a four-month low of $1.1706 on Wednesday, which brought it just two tenths of a cent from the weakest level since early November.

  163.
The dollar was mostly flat at 110.40 yen, after pulling back from a five-week high of 110.80 overnight.

  164.
The consumer price index rose 0.5% last month, in line with economist estimates but down from the 0.9% advance in June. Inflation eased in some areas where Fed policymakers had indicated price pressures would likely prove temporary, such as used cars.

  165.
The Fed has made a labour market recovery a condition for phasing out its asset purchase programme and raising interest rates, while generally viewing current inflationary pressures as transitory, although there has been debate about how long those pressures could last.

  166.
The Fed is “likely to take some comfort” from the CPI report, David de Garis, an analyst at National Australia Bank (OTC:), wrote in a note to clients.

  167.
“For now, the focus returns more fully to the rate of improvement in the state of the labour market.”

  168.
De Garis says a taper announcement is likely to come in November or December, but could possibly come next month.

  169.
Kansas City Fed President Esther George said on Wednesday the standard for reducing the bond-buying programme may have already been met by the current spike in inflation, recent labour market improvements and the expectation for continued strong demand.

  170.
Dallas Fed President Robert Kaplan, in an interview with CNBC, said the U.S. central bank should announce its timeline for reducing massive bond purchases next month and start tapering them in October.

  171.
In an interview with Reuters, Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin said it may take a few months more for the U.S. job market to recover enough that the Fed can start to reduce its support for the economy.

  172.
“The general consensus emanating from FOMC members currently is that the time to taper asset purchases is nearing,” Commonwealth Bank of Australia (OTC:) strategist Kim Mundy wrote in a research note.

  173.
“Growing expectations for a near-term taper can support USD.”

  174.
Mundy expects a taper announcement in September if jobs data for August remains strong.

  175.
Elsewhere, bitcoin traded around $45,000 after touching $46,787.60 on Wednesday, the highest since mid-May.

  176.
Smaller rival ether stood around $3,100 after advancing to $3,279.99 overnight for the first time since May 19.

  218.
Investing.com – The dollar edged lower in early European trading Thursday, as signs of cooling U.S. inflation relieved the pressure on the Federal Reserve to start reining in its massive bond-buying program.

  219.
At 2:15 AM ET (0615 GMT), the , which tracks the greenback against a basket of six other currencies, traded around 0.1% lower at 92.898, retreating from Wednesday’s high of 93.195, a level not seen since the start of April.

  220.
was flat at 110.41, after pulling back from the five-week high of 110.80 reached overnight, was marginally higher at 1.1741, after falling to a four-month low of 1.1706, while the risk-sensitive fell 0.1% to 0.7365.

  221.
The U.S. increased 0.5% last month after climbing 0.9% in June, the largest drop in the month-to-month inflation rate in 15 months. Excluding the volatile food and energy components, the rose 0.3% after increasing 0.9% in June. That was the smallest gain in four months and the first deceleration in the so-called core CPI since February.

  222.
Fed Chair Jerome Powell has consistently said high inflation numbers will turn out to be transitory as the economy fully reopens, limiting the need to quickly tighten monetary policy, and these figures will provide some support to this view.

  223.
That said, the weakness in the greenback is limited, with many analysts still expecting the Fed to announce a tapering of stimulus this year, potentially as soon as next month.

  224.
“Prices continued to rise from the previous month and, on a year-over-year basis, CPI growth remained unchanged at 5.4% (it was expected to slow to 5.3%),” said Kathy Lien, an analyst at BK Asset Management.

  225.
“So while Federal Reserve officials may be relieved that price pressures did not accelerate more rapidly, the continued increase in CPI keeps the central bank on track to announce [a] taper in the next six weeks.”

  226.
This point of view was backed up Wednesday by comments from Kansas City Fed President , who indicated that the standard for reducing the central bank’s bond-buying program may have already been met given the current levels of inflation and recent labor market improvements.

  227.
Elsewhere, edged lower to 1.3868 despite U.K. growing 4.8% in the second quarter, a sharp increase on the quarter after the first quarter’s 1.6% drop.

  228.
This report is likely to invigorate discussions about fewer asset purchases from the Bank of England.

  229.
fell 0.2% to 8.6079 ahead of a meeting of the Turkish central bank later Thursday. The bank is widely expected to keep its benchmark interest rate steady at 19%, to the likely annoyance of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, after Turkish consumer inflation climbed more than expected in July.

  230.
Turkey’s central bank raised its inflation expectations in its latest quarterly report on July 29 but projected a significant drop in price growth in the final quarter.

  251.
Americans have been spoiled for decades by an environment of low inflation. Now that inflation is back — for however long that lasts — we need to change the way we think about our incomes, investments, debt and spending.

  252.
Inflation changes everything, and sometimes in surprising ways. If we don’t factor inflation into our calculations, we’re going to get fooled time and time again by what economists call “the money illusion.” The danger is that we might believe we’re doing better financially than we really are because we’re paying attention to nominal figures instead of what our money can buy.

  253.

  254.
Breaking news: U.S. inflation shows signs of moderating in July

  255.
The money illusion

  256.
Investopedia explains the money illusion this way: “People have a tendency to view their wealth and income in nominal dollar terms, rather than in real terms.”

  257.
“In other words,” says Wikipedia, “the face value (nominal value) of money is mistaken for its purchasing power (real value) at a previous point in time.”

  258.
Amid low inflation, such as the period from roughly 1990 to 2020, the purchasing power of a dollar didn’t change that much from year to year, so people could sort of get away with ignoring how inflation was slowly eroding their income and wealth. But that denial is no longer tenable.

  259.
We see the money illusion everywhere, and it’s going to be a problem as long as inflation remains high. For instance, we often hear of people bragging that their home’s value has doubled in 10 years. We hear politicians griping that gas prices are the highest they’ve been since 2014.

  260.
And the market cheerleaders tell us that the Dow Jones Industrial Average
307.
Those people are pretending that the nominal price of houses, equity shares or gallons of gas today is directly comparable to what it was months or years ago. It’s like your smug granddad lecturing you about how a candy bar “ought” to cost a nickel, just as it did back in the day.

  308.
Everyone knows a nickel isn’t worth what it used to be and we should start acting like we know it.

  309.
Wages are really falling

  310.
Sometimes the money illusion clouds how we see the broader economy. If we look at the 4% increase over the past year in nominal hourly earnings, we’d think workers were doing OK and that maybe higher wages are pushing up selling prices, which would be a worrisome sign that the current spate of inflation is going to become permanent.

  311.
But real wages aren’t even keeping up with inflation. Real earnings are down 1.2% in the past year and have fallen at a 3.3% annual pace so far this year. Inflation isn’t a wage-push story.

  312.
Another example: There’s been a lot of news recently about how Americans are bingeing on credit this year. But the economists and journalists responsible for this story line are suffering from the money illusion.

  313.
Yes, in nominal terms, household debt rose in the first half of the year. But in real terms, debt was unchanged. What’s more, real credit-card debt has dropped by $179 billion since the end of 2019; it’s as low as it was in 1999.

  335.
Americans are still deleveraging, just as we have been for more than a decade. It’s only the large run-up in inflation this year that makes it seem as if debt levels are rising. We’re going to pay back this debt with inflated dollars, so it makes sense to analyze it in real terms.

  336.
We shouldn’t let our brains give us the wrong idea about what’s really going on.

  337.
The money illusion makes it seem as if our incomes, our assets, our debts and our spending are all bigger than they really are. What matters most is what our money can buy.

Results were also affected by a difficult comparison with the year-ago quarter at the height of the pandemic—and a push by the company to reduce the sale of some low-price, low-margin items on the site.

  368.

  369.
For the quarter, eBay (ticker: EBAY) posted revenue of $2.7 billion, up 14% from a year ago, not including the company’s Korea business, which is accounted for as a discontinued operation. In June, eBay announced an agreement to sell an 80% stake in that unit to the Korean retailer eMart for about $3 billion in cash.

  370.
Adjusted for that business, the company’s guidance for the quarter was for revenue of $2.58 billion to $2.63 billion, eBay explained in a presentation on quarterly results.

  371.
EBay repurchased $1.5 billion of common stock in the quarter. The company has increased its buyback program for the full year to $5 billion from $2 billion.

  372.
Earnings on a non-GAAP basis were 99 cents a share excluding Korea; guidance on an adjusted basis to reflect the Korea transaction, was for non-GAAP profits of 89 cents to 94 cents a share. Under generally accepted accounting principles, the company earned 43 cents a share.

  373.
“On an apples-to-apples basis, all key business metrics met or exceeded expectations and revenue growth was driven by the acceleration in our payments migration and growth in advertising,” eBay CEO Jamie Iannone said in a statement. “We are simplifying our portfolio and growing our core while delivering significant shareholder value.”

  374.
Gross merchandise value was $22.1 billion, down 7% as reported, and off 11% when adjusted for currency rates. In an interview with Barron’s, Iannone said that the decline reflects a combination of a difficult comparison with the previous-year period, and a concerted push to remove some low-value items from the site. He also noted that as some restrictions on consumer mobility unfolded over the course of the quarter, growth moderated—the same pattern that
377.
For the third quarter, eBay projects revenue of $2.42 billion to $2.47 billion, with non-GAAP profits of 86 cents to 90 cents a share, and GAAP profits ranging from 64 cents to 68 cents a share.

  378.
Iannone said the underlying business is healthy and growing—he says the company now one year into a multiyear turnaround and that the strategy is working. He notes, for instance, that 71% of transactions are now handled by the company’s payments platform, with a target of 90% of all transactions in the September quarter.

  379.
“Our innovation playbook is really working,” he says, with continued strong growth in categories such as watches, sneakers, trading cards, and certified refurbished electronics.

  400.
Sure, high-interest sports like basketball can sustain an athlete’s marketability long after the closing ceremony. But for some more obscure fields such as fencing, synchronized swimming or water polo, the Olympics are a brief window when these athletes must capitalize on their earning potential ASAP before the Games end, and the public’s attention moves on.

  401.

  402.
“The challenge with an Olympic athlete is what happens between Olympic Games,” super-agent Leigh Steinberg told MarketWatch. “If their sport is not prominently profiled and is not a big TV sport, they garner [an] incredible profile in a very short period — and then they can fade away.”

  403.
And he should know: Steinberg, 72, currently represents star athletes such as Patrick Mahomes and Tua Tagovailoa, in addition to several Olympic athletes who participate in less popular sports.

  404.
See also: LeBron James is a billionaire — the first U.S. team sport athlete to do it while still playing

  405.
Steinberg hustled to keep U.S. figure skater Brian Boitano in the spotlight after he became a household name during the 1988 Calgary Winter Games, for example. Boitano won the gold medal for the men’s singles in a final matchup with Canadian Brian Orser, which was famously dubbed the “Battle of the Brians.”

  406.
So Steinberg saw that Boitano was being vaulted into the public consciousness, and he took advantage of the opportunity after the Games. “We created a skate-show for him where he had ownership,” Steinberg said. And Boitano kept spinning his Olympic popularity into regular income and multiple primetime Emmy nominations for the filming of his skate shows “Carmen on Ice” and “Ice Wars.” These projects came out within two years following the 1988 Games, and helped keep Boitano in the limelight long after the Olympic torch was passed.

  407.
True, the Olympic audience is shrinking. The Tokyo Olympics ratings were down 43% from the Rio Games in 2016, although part of the drop could be related to some Olympic events being featured on exclusively on NBC’s
429.
But the Olympics still provide a major platform for athletes to come out of nowhere and make impressions on millions of viewers.

  430.
Steinberg says that athletes in fan-favorite sports such as gymnastics should take advantage of their newfound fame by participating in what he calls the “celebrity-making machine” of the Olympics. So breakout American athletes like gymnast and women’s all-around champion Suni Lee, 100 meter breaststroke gold medalist Lydia Jacoby and taekwondo star Anastasija Zolotic should now be competing for all of the free publicity and photo opportunities they can get, he says, such as “early morning talk shows, late night talk shows, and ‘People’ magazine.”

  431.
So it should come as no surprise that Lee, Zolotic and fencer Lee Kiefer were all on the “Today” show after their wins, or that U.S. gymnast Simone Biles had an August “People” cover. U.S. runner Molly Seidel became a trending Twitter topic when she ran away with the bronze medal in the women’s marathon — and having fitness tracker Strava name her a “Strava legend” will help her brand go the distance.

  432.
This all helps these competitors increase their social media following on Twitter
440.
While the Tokyo ratings were lower, this year’s Games set at least one record. More than 1.4 billion minutes of highlights and clips were streamed from the Tokyo Games, a 37% increase from the 2016 Rio Games, according to NBC. These short clips could be helpful to some of the breakout stars of the Tokyo Games as they grow their fanbase.

  441.
Some early winners: Biles’s Instagram following grew by 53% to 2.3 million since the start of the Tokyo Games; Lee’s followers grew by 511% to 1.2 million; and swimmer Caeleb Dressel now has 359,000 followers — a 52% increase, according to data compiled by Adweek.

  479.
This isn’t just any offering: It’s a $600 million green convertible notes offering. Convertible debt can, eventually, become stock which dilutes existing shareholders’ stakes. That’s one reason for stocks can be weak after announcing a convertible deal. Convertible debt can also generate selling pressure from arbitrage investors, who can sell stock and buy the converts. That way the arbitrage investors can capture only the bond portion of the convertible debt, removing the fluctuations in the convertible debt prices due to the embedded stock option.

  480.
Fisker ended the second quarter with about $962 million in cash on the balance sheet. That was a healthy level relative to other start-up EV producers.
483.
Fisker also announced it will enter into capped call transactions with purchasers of its convertible debt. That limits the potential dilution to existing shareholders by, essentially, having Fisker buy call options on its own stock. The dilution is limited, but the call options cost money.

  484.
It’s a complicated transaction, but companies, including Fisker, are always trying to access capital as cheaply as possible. Fisker wasn’t immediately available to comment on its offering.

  485.
This looks to be the first large debt deal for an EV start-up that went public by merging with a special purpose acquisition company. That list includes Fisker as well as companies such as
535.
What type of car insurance do I need?

  536.
Assessing how much car insurance you need really breaks down into two factors: where you live and what car you drive. Where you live will determine the state minimum required insurance you need to carry in order for your car to be street legal. Most often, this includes a certain amount of liability insurance. In addition to that, the value of the car you drive and whether you own it outright dictates what optional kinds of insurance you may want to carry.

  537.
If you’re shopping for insurance, you’ve probably seen the term “full coverage” mentioned a few times. While there’s no universal definition, it usually refers to a policy that combines liability car insurance, collision insurance and comprehensive insurance.

  543.

  544. Collision insurance: Covers your own vehicle’s damages after an accident, regardless of who is at fault

  545.

  546.

  547. Comprehensive insurance: Covers repairs if your own vehicle is stolen or is damaged in an incident that isn’t a collision with another car, such as a natural disaster or hitting an animal

  548.

  549.

  550.
Neither collision nor comprehensive coverage is mandated by law in any state, but you may need it if you have an outstanding car loan. Lenders often require that drivers purchase additional coverage in order to protect their investment.

  551.
If a car is damaged and declared a total loss, depending on the claim, comprehensive or collision insurance will reimburse the policyholder up to the actual cash value of the vehicle, minus an agreed-on deductible. If the car is being financed, that payout will go to the lienholder.

  552.
State required coverage

  553.
As mentioned, a liability insurance policy is required in some form by almost every state. Liability coverage ensures that if you cause an accident, the other parties’ medical bills and repair bills will be taken care of. It does not cover any damage to your own car or your injuries after an accident you’re found at fault for.

  554.
Liability coverage is broken down into two parts:

  555.

  556.

  557. Bodily injury liability: Covers medical expenses and lost wages for individuals other than the at-fault driver

  558.

  559.

  560. Property damage liability: Reimburses another party for damage to their vehicle or property when the policyholder is at fault for an accident

  561.

  562.

  563.
How much liability insurance do I need?

  564.
Each state sets its own minimum liability insurance requirements, which you’ll often see broken down into three numbers. For example, California requires minimum coverage limits of 15/30/5. That means drivers need to purchase at least $15,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per person, $30,000 in bodily injury liability coverage per accident and $5,000 in property damage per accident.

  565.
The risk of purchasing the minimum amount of car insurance is that a driver may not be totally covered after a car accident. If a California driver carrying the bare-minimum coverage causes $35,000 in property damage, they wouldn’t have enough liability insurance to cover the costs. The remaining $30,000 would have to come out of their pocket, and if they were not able to pay, they could be sued.

  566.
As a general precaution, insurance experts recommend choosing the largest liability limit you can afford. That helps to protect your wallet and protect you from lawsuits in the event of an at-fault accident.

  567.
The average price of liability coverage in 2018 was $644.11, according to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC). Higher coverage limits usually mean a higher premium, but other factors like your car, driving record and credit score also shape the price of an insurance policy.

  568.
Other required coverage

  569.
States may also mandate additional coverage besides bodily injury and property damage liability coverage. Here are some other common types of insurance you might need to carry depending on where you live:

  570.

  571.

  572. Uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist coverage (UM/UIM): Uninsured motorist coverage comes into play if your car is hit and the person at fault has insufficient liability insurance or no insurance at all. It offers assistance for medical expenses, lost wages and car damage.

  573.

  574.

  575. Medical payments (MedPay): MedPay covers medical bills for the policyholder and other passengers, regardless of fault.

  576.

  577.

  578. Personal injury protection (PIP): Similar to MedPay, PIP insurance pays for medical bills. It also covers lost wages, funeral expenses and child care in certain situations.

  579.

  580.

  581.
Each of these coverages is required in certain states but can be purchased optionally elsewhere.

  582.
How much car insurance do I need when financing?

  583.
Taking out an auto insurance policy on a financed vehicle may mean purchasing more than just liability coverage. As mentioned, lenders generally require car owners to carry collision and comprehensive coverage because these types of insurance pay for damage to a vehicle that the lender legally owns.

  584.
Newer cars may be more expensive to insure if they have a high value or are expensive to repair, so a lender may ask for higher coverage limits. That usually means a larger insurance premium for the car owner.

  585.
Gap insurance

  586.
In addition to comprehensive and collision coverage, a lienholder may ask that a driver purchase gap insurance as well. “Gap” stands for guaranteed asset protection, and the coverage assists the policyholder when a financed car is totaled.

  587.
After a total-loss accident, if your insurer pays out the actual cash value of your car and it does not cover the amount you still owe on the vehicle, gap insurance pays the difference. For example, if you owe $15,000 and your insurer values your vehicle at $10,000 after a total-loss accident, gap insurance will pay the remaining $5,000 balance.

  588.
Optional types of insurance

  589.
Outside of liability and full coverage insurance, there are a number of add-on policies that insurers offer to give drivers greater peace of mind on the road. These include:

  590.

  591.

  592. Roadside assistance: Covers breakdowns, lockout services and towing needs

  593.

  594.

  595. Rental reimbursement: Covers rental car or taxi services if your primary vehicle is in the shop due to a covered repair

  596.

  597.

  598. New car replacement: Usually only applies to newer vehicles and will help you purchase a new vehicle if your car is deemed a total loss

  599.

  600.

  601. Umbrella insurance: Extra insurance beyond normal policy limits that can be used to cover injuries, property damage and other liability claims

  602.

  603.

  604.
Not all insurance providers have these options, so be sure to ask about the coverage you want when getting a quote or contacting an insurer for information.

  605.
Frequently asked questions

  606.
What is recommended for car insurance coverage?

  607.
In order to drive legally, you’ll need to carry the minimum liability insurance required in your state. Additional coverage will depend on whether the vehicle is owned or being financed, the car’s value, your income level and your personal coverage preferences.

  608.
How much insurance is required for a financed car?

  609.
Lenders usually require a car owner to purchase liability and comprehensive coverage when financing a car to financially protect it from damage. The lender may also ask for gap insurance to ensure a loan can be paid off if the car is totaled.

  610.
What does 100/300/50 represent on an insurance policy?

  611.
Liability coverage limits are often represented by three numbers, such as 100/300/50. In this case, it would mean the driver has $100,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per person, $300,000 worth of bodily injury coverage per accident and $50,000 worth of property damage coverage per accident. These are the maximum amounts your insurer will pay out after an accident you cause.
