Baker founding gift. The Dean’s House was designed by Coolidge Shepley Bulfinch and Abbott. Construction was completed in 1929, two years after the dedication of the first 12 HBS buildings and just two years before the death of George F. Baker, the prominent banker who funded the construction of Harvard Business School’s original campus. The brick, 10, 978-square-foot Georgian Revival-style building includes a gracious entry hall, study, living room, dining room, kitchen, and pantry on the main floor, with a circular staircase leading to a sitting room, bedrooms, and baths on the second and third floors. The surrounding garden was part of Frederick Law Olmsted’s original landscape design. At the time of its completion, the Dean’s House was on the outskirts of campus, far enough from Baker Library to allow room for future structures. HBS Deans lived at the house until 1980, when it came to be used primarily for social functions. Dean Nitin Nohria revived the in-residence tradition when he was named Dean in 2010. About the Donor Construction of a Dean’s House was important to George F. Baker (1840-1931), who believed that Dean Wallace B. Donham and his successors should live in close proximity to students and faculty. Although a Dean’s residence had been part of the original campus design, plans for its construction had been eliminated to reduce costs but reinstated at Baker’s insistence. A prominent financier, philanthropist, and president of the First National Bank of New York, Baker was an extraordinary business leader. At the age of 23, he invested $3, 000 to become an original shareholder in the First National Bank, where he worked as a teller. Just 14 years later, he became the bank’s president. Under his conservative management, the institution remained financially sound throughout the panics of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Baker’s business acumen extended to serving on the boards of more than 40 corporations, including several failing railroads that he bought and revitalized. He also had great success investing in the utilities, steel, and rubber industries. Although he famously kept a low profile, leaders of business and government consistently sought and received his advice. Baker appreciated the impact of unsteady economic times, and his 1924 gift to the School was understood to be an endorsement of the need for professional management education. When Harvard Overseer Bishop William Lawrence approached him for a $1 million donation to help build the new campus, Baker refused. After consulting with his son, Harvard College graduate George F. Baker Jr., the elder Baker told Lawrence he preferred to contribute $5 million “for the privilege of building the whole school.”</p>]]></content:encoded>

A year later, India Inc has somewhat tempered its expectations. Given that it seems like we are all now playing a part in a big sound-and-light production, what does one make of the noise around start-ups? Despite some mutterings of a bubble, most agree there is a new wave. This has had a major impact on industry as well as India’s business schools. A major part of the impetus for this shift from corporate jobs to start-ups is coming from the B-schools. This is a big universe of new ideas and a lot of fresh energy coming into the industry. What is helping this new phenomenon is the easy availability of guidance and handholding by experts and, most important, finance—thanks to the ever-ready band of venture capitalists and angel investors who are ready to back new, untried ideas. The business schools are thankfully aware of this development as most institutions are weaving entrepreneurship into their course curriculum to give support to young businessmen. It is in this backdrop that Outlook presents its annual ranking of India’s 100 Best B-Schools (in association with our research partner Drshti Strategic Research Services). Like last year, there are no surprises in the top 15 as the rankings here remain more or less constant with little changing among India’s top business schools. The real churn is at the mid-level colleges, where some have improved positions by vitalising parameters. The churn at lower levels continues—there are many new names making it to the Outlook rankings this year. What is also visible is an overall improvement in scoring by colleges, a trend that started last year showing that most colleges have got their act together and have been engaged in improving their systems. This is more visible in the lower ranks than in the upper ranks. Last year, looking at a good response in participation by B-schools to our survey, we had increased the list from 75 to 100. This year, following another round of good participation, we have maintained that. Considering all that enthusiasm in the start-up space, Outlook presents the ultimate guide to setting up a start-up. Believe me, it’s a cracker. There are also stories and columns that go deep into the issue of entrepreneurship. The global gurus spin wisdom, Steve Jobs is dissected, and we serve up an entrepreneurship quiz (give it a shot on pg 108). Given a scenario where B-schools are faced with new challenges, we look at the various issues facing them and how they are coping with the pace at which industry’s demands are changing. Start-ups are redefining rules in the classroom, and the B-schools are changing too. Similarly, with the corporate sector constantly in the spotlight, we look at how the reservations debate in the private corporate sector has completely died down. On the other hand, the Modi government is keen that the sector stop complaining and get down to doing what it does best—dreaming big, jumping in, taking risks. Is he, and RBI governor Raghuram Rajan, being unfair to India Inc? We look at the facts. Actually, there will be many failures in this start-up game. That’s how the model works. But are Indians ready for this? The students joining B-schools seem aware of the risks. Outlook’s package as well as its rankings assume special significance in such times and will help students take informed decisions. As always, choose wisely. In the issue dated October 5, 2015, in the table for India's Top 100 B-Schools, Rank 62 and 72 should read as Jaipuria Institute of Management instead of Jaipuria Institute of Science. Similarly, Rank 93 should be Pune Institute of Business Management instead of Institute of Business Management. The error is regretted. Methodology For 2015 Outlook Drshti B-School Survey Weightages 2014 120 Infrastructure & facilities 180 Personality Development & Industry exposure *** In order to rank India’s best B-schools, Drshti Strategic Research Services (Drshti) designed a detailed, rigorous methodology involving inputs from all the stakeholders—B-schools, recruiters, faculty and students. The initial task comprised drawing up a comprehensive list of B-schools across the country which offer a two-year full-time management course, and are recognised by a government body like the AICTE, NAAC and AIU. They also had to be at least five years old— with a minimum of three batches passed out—to be eligible for our rankings. Parameters and sub-parameters considered essential when rating a B-school have been evolved in consultation with industry experts and weightages assigned accordingly. Most of the parameters and sub-parameters are unchanged from last year to ensure consistency and comparability. However, weightages were revised upwards for parameters like incubation centre/entrepreneurship cell, management development programmes and average package. At the same time, there is a marginally increased emphasis on research facilitation and industry exposure. Various B-schools across India were contacted for participation—130 colleges responded, providing their objective data. This includes 24 institutes which did not participate last year.</p>]]></content:encoded>

Notes HBS Professor Youngme Moon, Senior Associate Dean and Chair of the MBA program, “While our MBA Program is focused on educating outstanding people with business experience who are looking to develop themselves as leaders, and our Executive Education programs are designed to further strengthen the capabilities of established leaders, CORe is designed to provide basic business fundamentals to segments of the population we’ve never directly addressed before: undergraduates, graduate students in non-business fields, and people who have just begun their first jobs in business but want a better foundation so they can thrive earlier in their career.” CORe will launch in June, initially with a limited cohort of students drawn from the greater Massachusetts region of colleges and universities; applications will be available in April on the HBX website (hbx.hbs.edu). In addition to CORe, later this year HBX will introduce a series of specialized courses for executives on topics such as entrepreneurship and innovation; disruptive innovation, growth, and strategy; and the microeconomics of competitiveness. Over time, HBX expects to roll out more courses that build on the HBS faculty’s influential research. Finally, HBX will introduce HBX Live, a virtual classroom that collapses geography and allows participants worldwide to interact directly with one another and a faculty member in the same way they would in a campus-based HBS class. Harvard Business School has partnered with the public broadcasting company WGBH to create a state-of-the-art space that will allow virtual engagement with up to 60 participants at a time. HBX Live will launch in Summer 2014 and be available initially on an invitation-only basis. Its early focus will include lifelong learning opportunities for HBS alumni and enhancing the School's modular Executive Education programs. HBX is the newest in a number of initiatives supporting Harvard University’s overarching efforts to infuse innovation into teaching and learning. In May 2012 Harvard and MIT announced the creation of edX, a non-profit online learning platform that would expand the reach of higher education by developing Internet-based courses that could be taken by students of any age, anywhere. Today there are more than two dozen Harvard-based learning experiences on topics ranging from history to neurosciences to national security, all developed by HarvardX—a Harvard-wide initiative that enables faculty to build and create online learning experiences and conduct groundbreaking research in this rapidly evolving space.
