It took place just down the road in Goshen on June 24th and 25th. Though it happened 6 months ago, I still recall many of the tips, techniques and conversations from this workshop.</p>

  45. <h2>Featured Potters</h2>
  46. <h3>Todd Pletcher</h3>
  47. <p><img decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3945" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare125-300x450.jpg" alt="Todd Pletcher" width="300" height="450" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare125-300x450.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare125-80x120.jpg 80w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare125-680x1020.jpg 680w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  48. <p>Todd was the host and did a fantastic job pulling off this great experience. Unfortunately for the Michiana pottery community, it was also like a big going away party because Todd and his family moved to the other side of the world soon after it was over. The most noticeable thing about Todd&#8217;s work is probably his wavy rims. He showed us how he created those rims and some of his different handle styles, among other things.</p>
  49. <h3>Eric Botbyl</h3>
  50. <p><img decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3943" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-25-300x200.jpg" alt="Eric Botbyl" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-25-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-25-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-25-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-25.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  51. <p>Eric runs the <a href="http://companiongallery.com/">Companion Gallery</a> and makes his own pottery in Humboldt, Tennessee. He is known for his &#8216;scragglers&#8217; which are highly altered, textured wheel thrown pieces. It was great watching him use simple tools to make such complex surfaces.</p>
  52. <h3>Matt Schiemann</h3>
  53. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-3944" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-13-300x200.jpg" alt="Matt Schiemann" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-13-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-13-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-13-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-13.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  54. <p>Matt made the trip from St. Petersburg, Florida to help fire the train kiln and demonstrate his making techniques. Matt is a second generation potter making functional, mostly wood fired work. He also helps run the <a href="http://www.moreanartscenter.org/center-for-clay/">Morean Center for Clay</a>.</p>
  55. <p><span id="more-3861"></span></p>
  56. <h2>Handle With Care Workshop</h2>
  57. <p>There were so many things covered by Todd, Eric and Matt that it would be nearly impossible to explain everything here. And since I&#8217;m writing about it 6 months later, you&#8217;ll be lucky if I remember half. So I&#8217;ll stick with mostly what I wrote down in my notebook.</p>
  58. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-6/" rel="attachment wp-att-3961"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3961" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-6-680x454.jpg" alt="Handle With Care Workshop" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-6-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-6-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-6-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-6.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  59. <h3>Making Pots</h3>
  60. <p>The workshop was called Handle with Care. There was a focus on handles but the overall theme seemed to be about caring enough about details to make your work better. All three acknowledged the time it took to focus on details but that is what makes their work &#8220;theirs&#8221; and the reason it stands out from other potters&#8217; work.</p>
  61. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-16/" rel="attachment wp-att-3964"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3964" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-16-680x454.jpg" alt="Todd's wavy rim" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-16-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-16-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-16-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-16.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  62. <blockquote>
  63. <p style="text-align: left;">You can always control how hard you work.<br />
  64. -Todd Pletcher</p>
  65. </blockquote>
  66. <p>Matt hates trimming. After he throws the form he pushes extra clay at the bottom down to the wheel head with a wooden tool or rib and cuts it away.</p>
  67. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3947" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare014-680x453.jpg" alt="Matt trimming" width="680" height="453" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare014-680x453.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare014-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/handlewithcare014-300x200.jpg 300w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
  68. <p>This was a small revelation. I don&#8217;t mind trimming, but even getting rid of excess clay will save some time when I trim later. Eric doesn&#8217;t trim much of the bigger pots he makes. He trims the rest on a chuck.</p>
  69. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3948" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-8-300x450.jpg" alt="Eric squishing a bottle" width="300" height="450" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-8-300x450.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-8-80x120.jpg 80w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-8.jpg 667w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></p>
  70. <p>Eric said that it is always good to use your own work.</p>
  71. <blockquote>
  72. <p style="text-align: left;">I&#8217;m always asking myself, &#8220;What&#8217;s wrong with this? How could this be better?&#8221;<br />
  73. -Eric Botbyl</p>
  74. </blockquote>
  75. <p style="text-align: left;">Todd showed us a couple different styles of handles that he makes. He weighs out the clay for each handle on a scale and attaches and then pulls the handle from the pot. There was a lot of good discussion about handles from all three guys.</p>
  76. <p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-23/" rel="attachment wp-att-3967"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3967" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-23-680x454.jpg" alt="Todd Pletcher handle" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-23-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-23-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-23-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-23.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  77. <p style="text-align: left;">The video of Pete Pinnell&#8217;s thoughts on cups was mentioned:</p>
  78. <p><iframe loading="lazy" title="Pete Pinnell: Thoughts on Cups" width="500" height="375" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WChFMMzLHVs?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe></p>
  79. <p>Matt adds texture to his plates and then pulls clay at the edge up and folds it over inside to create a smooth rim.</p>
  80. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3949" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-15-680x454.jpg" alt="Matt's textured plate" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-15-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-15-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-15-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-15.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
  81. <p>Eric explained some things about his pitchers as he transformed one right before our eyes. He uses the rim as a template for the lower line about 2 inches below. The &#8216;adam&#8217;s apple&#8217; came from Don Reitz. The spout is almost straight up and is sharp but not thin enough to make it brittle. It was awesome to see him cut, dart, fold, alter and add texture to many different kinds of pots.</p>
  82. <p><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3950" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-24-680x454.jpg" alt="Eric making a scraggler cup" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-24-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-24-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-24-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-24.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></p>
  83. <h3>Influences</h3>
  84. <p>Matt&#8217;s father was a potter and his undergrad professor so of course that is a big influence. He also mentioned Don Reitz, Matt Long and Yoshi Fujii. He also likes Tara Wilson&#8217;s use of clean forms in a wood fire and Ben Carter&#8217;s work ethic and contribution to the clay community.</p>
  85. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/?attachment_id=3951"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3951 size-medium" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-21-300x200.jpg" alt="Matt Schiemann wood fired cup" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-21-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-21-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-21-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-21.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  86. <p>Todd mentioned Greg Stahley for his use of lines. Dick Lehman and Mark Goertzen, a pair of Goshen potters, also had a big impact on Todd and his work, especially while he worked for them. He said that he has a new set of influences which are mostly female, including Deb Schwartzkopf.</p>
  87. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-18/" rel="attachment wp-att-3966"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3966" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-18-300x200.jpg" alt="Todd Pletcher, Dick Lehman" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-18-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-18-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-18-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-18.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  88. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-22/" rel="attachment wp-att-3952"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3952" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-22-300x200.jpg" alt="Todd Pletcher wood fired cup" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-22-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-22-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-22-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-22.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  89. <p>One of Eric&#8217;s biggest influences is Kristen Keiffer.</p>
  90. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-20/" rel="attachment wp-att-3953"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3953" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-20-300x200.jpg" alt="Eric Botbyl wood fired cup" width="300" height="200" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-20-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-20-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-20-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-20.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
  91. <p>Speaking of influences, I can see the influence of these three guys and the workshop in my work over the past few months. Some of the techniques or design elements may have been present before the workshop but they are more refined now. My handles have improved incrementally each time I&#8217;ve made them since the workshop. I also feel a little bit better about taking time to get details right or explore new forms or ideas.</p>

  99. <h3>Thoughts</h3>
  100. <p>Matt talked a little bit about critiques and was even kind enough to give some of us a personal mini critique if we had our pots with us. He has his students come with at least five questions they want answered. For some critiques, the person being critiqued doesn&#8217;t get to talk for the first five minutes. It&#8217;s good to hear other thoughts about your pots because it can spark new ideas or refine some of the details.</p>
  101. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-17/" rel="attachment wp-att-3963"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3963" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-17-680x454.jpg" alt="working" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-17-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-17-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-17-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-17.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  102. <p>Eric and Matt both agreed that the weight of a pot should match the perception of the pot.</p>
  103. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-7/" rel="attachment wp-att-3954"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3954" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-7-680x454.jpg" alt="Matt and Eric" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-7-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-7-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-7-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-7.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  104. <p>I asked them about signing or stamping their work. Todd likes his handmade stamp and stamps everything with his mark. Matt and Eric said that some customers or collectors want the pot to be signed. Eric signs the bottom but said that you should be able to tell who&#8217;s pot it is from across the room. Matt has a little four-square stamp signifying a window that he worked under but is still trying to come up with a better idea.</p>
  105. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-3/" rel="attachment wp-att-3955"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3955" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-3-680x454.jpg" alt="Matt Schiemann, Eric Botbyl, Todd Pletcher" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-3-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-3-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-3-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-3.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  106. <p>As it turns out, pottery is a lot like life:</p>
  107. <blockquote><p>You&#8217;ve got to meet the external pressure with equal or greater internal pressure.<br />
  108. -Eric Botbyl</p></blockquote>
  109. <h2>Firing the Train Kiln</h2>
  110. <p>I tried to be at Todd&#8217;s as much as I could to get to know the guys and soak up all the knowledge I could. It was a lot easier since I was on summer break. I met a few new people and got to talk to Matt, Eric and Todd quite a bit. There were a lot of good conversations about pots, politics and life experiences.</p>
  111. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-2/" rel="attachment wp-att-3956"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3956" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-2-680x413.jpg" alt="Train Kiln at Night" width="680" height="413" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-2-680x413.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-2-120x73.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-2-300x182.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-2.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  112. <p>According to my photos, the kiln was loaded on Monday before the workshop and fired Monday and Tuesday until about midnight. It cooled down for a few days and we got to open it up during the workshop.</p>
  113. <p><a href="http://artbyfuzzy.com/2016/12/20/handle-care-workshop/hwc-10/" rel="attachment wp-att-3958"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3958" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-10-680x454.jpg" alt="Train Kiln pots" width="680" height="454" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-10-680x454.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-10-120x80.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-10-300x200.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/hwc-10.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>

  115. <p>Matt brought a large amount of wood firing experience and made some alterations to the stoking. This paid off in a pretty even firing which reached temp sooner than previous firings in Todd&#8217;s kiln. In fact the front of the kiln got <em>too hot</em> and some pieces were lost. But to make up for that, the middle and back came out with fantastic results.</p>

  153. <p><span id="more-3904"></span></p>
  154. <p>I set up next to <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/DavidGamber">David Gamber</a> who hauled his pots all the way from New Jersey. Nearby were southern Michigan potters <a href="http://www.fauversfolly.com/">Peter Fauver</a> and Greg Allen. Across the aisle was <a href="http://matthewwrightpottery.wixsite.com/matthew-wright">Matt Wright</a>, a grad student at Texas Tech who creates ceramic drums! We had a handful of younger Goshen potters including <a href="http://www.smisiukceramics.com/">Sadie Misiuk</a>, <a href="https://krabillpottery.wordpress.com/">Seth Krabill</a>, <a href="http://www.alechooglandceramics.com/">Alec Hoogland</a>, and <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/DeLoozePottery">Garrett Delooze</a>. <a href="http://companiongallery.com/portfolio/eric-botbyl/">Eric Botbyl</a> from Tennessee and <a href="http://www.troybungartstudios.com/">Troy Bungart</a> are pottery tour veterans from other stops in previous years. <a href="http://pisowpottery.com/">Joel Pisowicz</a>, who I met at the Michiana Christmas sale was also there this year next to our fantastic host, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/shop/MoeGlassNPots">Moey Hart</a>.</p>
  155. <div id="attachment_3927" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3927" class="size-large wp-image-3927" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping-680x393.jpg" alt="Garrett, Eric, Brett Kern, Troy" width="680" height="393" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping-680x393.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping-120x69.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping-300x173.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/prepping.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-3927" class="wp-caption-text">Garrett, Eric, Brett Kern, Troy</p></div>
  156. <p>We had nice weather and the attendance seemed to be pretty solid again. I counted at least 134 people that passed through my booth on Saturday and 85 on Sunday. This lead to 23 transactions on Saturday and 12 Sunday. Altogether, 47 pots and one magnet left with happy customers: 26 on Saturday, 21 Sunday. Sunday&#8217;s total is slightly inflated because I had a special sale which allowed customers to pick three $10 pots for $20. Four customers took advantage of this offer which reinforces the idea that people love the feeling of getting a deal. These $10 pots are mostly one-off small cups or little experiments of form or glaze. I have raised the prices on my larger mugs and cups but I don&#8217;t want to completely overlook people that aren&#8217;t ready to invest such an amount into one of my handmade items.</p>
  157. <p>Like the weekend before at the Middlebury Fall Festival, I set up a social media giveaway. I had another small group of participants. The winner this time was a potter out of Fort Wayne who made it to a few stops on the tour.</p>
  158. <p>Moey hosted another fantastic stop and kept us well fed with smoked meat and plenty of other food. It was great to talk to the other potters and learn about their work. And one of my favorite parts of the tour is trading pots. I picked up some great stuff this year.</p>

  162. <p>My wife was a little disappointed that I didn&#8217;t bring home any big mugs&#8230; but I guess she could always start making her own pots to trade!</p>
  163. <p>Thanks to everyone who came out and supported us. Especially the return customers and friends that have supported me through the years. I hope to see you on the Michiana Pottery Tour next year!</p>

  201. Less Visitors</h2>
  202. <p>The turnout seemed to be down this year. I heard that there were some vendors that didn&#8217;t return as well. Friday evening was apparently homecoming at the local high school which probably stole some potential visitors. Then it rained for a while on Saturday morning. The sun finally came out and it turned into a nice day but perhaps some people had already moved on to other things.</p>
  203. <div id="attachment_3916" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3916" class="size-large wp-image-3916" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4-680x510.jpg" alt="middlebury fall festival: demo" width="680" height="510" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4-680x510.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4-120x90.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4-300x225.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival4.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-3916" class="wp-caption-text">demonstrating</p></div>
  204. <p>Usually, less visitors = less sales. That was true for the weekend. I still sold enough to cover the booth fee and enough extra to make it worth hauling all my stuff over there, but it was by far the lowest number of sales so far. Plus I had a pretty good number of demo pots that made it home and into the kiln. So even if I didn&#8217;t sell anything it wasn&#8217;t a waste of time. And it&#8217;s always fun to meet people and talk about pottery.</p>
  205. <h2>New Pottery Wheel</h2>
  206. <p>Speaking of pottery, I made a fairly large purchase over the summer. I bought myself a portable pottery wheel so I didn&#8217;t have to haul my full size electric wheel to Middlebury and back again. Though it was a relatively large business expense, it is already worth it.</p>
  207. <p><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3912" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel-680x445.jpg" alt="artista wheel" width="680" height="445" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel-680x445.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel-120x78.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel-300x196.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/Artista-Wheel.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  208. <p>I set it up on a collapsible picnic table. It felt a little awkward compared to my usual throwing position but it worked. Plus I had half the top of the picnic table to put my tools and pots.</p>
  209. <div id="attachment_3918" style="width: 690px" class="wp-caption aligncenter"><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" aria-describedby="caption-attachment-3918" class="size-large wp-image-3918" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3-680x510.jpg" alt="middlebury fall festival: my view" width="680" height="510" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3-680x510.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3-120x90.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3-300x225.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/middlebury-fall-festival3.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a><p id="caption-attachment-3918" class="wp-caption-text">my view</p></div>

  211. <h2>New Tables</h2>
  212. <p>Other than the portable picnic table, I also had two more 6&#8242; folding plastic tables bringing my total to four. I only set up three of them but they are pretty convenient. I can fit at least two in my Civic even after I put my shelves in. And they have handles so they are pretty easy to carry, even two at a time. The 6&#8242; size also seems to be pretty flexible when it comes to arranging my booth. The 8&#8242; tables that I&#8217;ve used before only fit into the booth a limited number of ways.</p>
  213. <h2>Social Media Giveaway</h2>
  214. <p>I dipped my toe into the waters of in-person contests and giveaways. I didn&#8217;t promote it much other than putting up a couple small signs. I tried to make it easy to enter so contestants only had to take a picture of something in my booth, post it to social media and tag my account. For every 10 likes their post received they got an additional entry. There were 7 or 8 entries but two of the entries got a lot more likes than the others.</p>

  364. <p>My application was accepted and I was paired with Lori and Jeff and their awesome space, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OurPlaceOnMain/">Our Place on Main</a>. They live upstairs and use the downstairs as a space to host events. I hauled my pots over there the weekend before the event. They provided me with plenty of tables and nice black table cloths. I had gone through, checked prices and re-packed my pots the day before so setup was quick.</p>

  366. <p>Wednesday evening I arrived a little early to finish setting up and added a few new pots fresh out of the kiln. People started showing up around 4:45. Our musician, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/dougharschmusic/">Doug Harsch</a>, came a little after 5:00 and started playing. Great singing and playing. Even a few Dylan tunes.</p>

  375. <p>There was a steady stream of people until it was close to the end of the event. Towards the beginning I was really busy and made 3 sales right in a row. I made 6 sales on the night for a total of just over $200. Not bad for a 3 hour event. I also had a lot of positive feedback.</p>
  376. <p><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3853" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display-680x383.jpg" alt="elkhart artwalk display" width="680" height="383" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display-680x383.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display-120x68.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display-300x169.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/elkhart-artwalk-display.jpg 800w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  377. <p>It was fun meeting new people and talking about my work. It was a little hard to hear over the music sometimes but it was a fun atmosphere. Even though they didn&#8217;t buy anything, my favorite visitors were my wife, daughters and a surprise appearance by my mom. It was fun to have them there for a little while.</p>
  378. <p>Around 8:00 I wrapped things up and went over to <a href="http://www.artsonmain.org/">Arts on Main</a> for the artist gathering. I got to see some work by Ben Roseland at the gallery and meet some of the other artists that participated in the ArtWalk. I only wish that I got to see some of the other artist&#8217;s work at the other locations.</p>
  379. <p>Three awards were handed out. Going into the event I thought that my best shot would be that one of my pieces might be <em>considered</em> for the &#8220;Best Funky-Eclectic Piece&#8221; award. But that award came and went. And I barely mentioned the ballots for the &#8220;People&#8217;s Choice&#8221; award to my visitors. So imagine my surprise when they called my name for the &#8220;Best Body of Work&#8221; award!</p>
  380. <p><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter wp-image-3858 size-large" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body-680x709.jpg" alt="best body of work" width="680" height="709" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body-680x709.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body-115x120.jpg 115w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body-300x313.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/best-body.jpg 1000w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  381. <p>What?!</p>
  382. <p><a href="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website.jpg"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-3850" src="http://brandons37.sg-host.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website-680x383.jpg" alt="Elkhart Artwalk website and awards" width="680" height="383" srcset="http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website-680x383.jpg 680w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website-120x68.jpg 120w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website-300x169.jpg 300w, http://artbyfuzzy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/website.jpg 1638w" sizes="(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px" /></a></p>
  383. <p>And the second best part, after some confirmation that I&#8217;m making progress in my work, is that there was a cash prize for each award!</p>
  384. <p>So it was definitely a worthwhile event. I hope to return in the future.</p>
