This experience has proven to be a tour-de-force of sorts. Countless memories, the grooming of tomorrow’s generations, and breathing modern life into the beautifully mythic art has lent me—and all those participating—a rather incredible chapter. What seems on the surface to be another delightful community theatre production has, in fact, transformed into an all-encompassing experience audiences are sure to enjoy and remember. Equal parts comedy and psychological thriller, this classic style murder-mystery brings us seven of the most quirky and untrustworthy characters one may find. In the middle of it all is a short-tempered inspector attempting to unearth the darkest deviant of the group. Bound to a countryside guest-house due to the worst blizzard in decades, the sleazily entertaining cast of characters struggle to find alliance with another who can be trusted. Packing a twist-ending that’s sure to leave most audience member's mouths agape, the suspense boils to a wonderfully crafted reveal, tying together loose ends for a family of the past torn apart and once forgotten. “The Mousetrap” is as enjoyable as it is the gold-standard of the “whodunit?” formula. Alongside this timeless script sets a fantastically talented cohort of performers. Therein lies the serendipitous layers of childhood nostalgia and full-circle connectivity. Some of my earliest and most fond memories of childhood were found in the early ‘90’s at the basement of the Legion Club watching late-night Yorkshire rehearsals. The versatile talents of Sue Roush (Mom) and Karla Ott consistently on full display, giving their all to the art they believed in and sharing it with the York community. Now, here we are! It’s my turn to direct these two lovely women in a show that continues to leave its mark on theatrical history. For a young budding performer, my early teen years hit at a perfect time in York’s history. I was granted the opportunities to play leading roles in the Playhouse’s first two installments of the Summer Children’s Theatre Program. Through more than a decade of wonderfully-imagined shows, and more than 1, 000 kids on stage, the Children’s Theatre remains a staple of summer fun, collaboration, and excellence in York. Making this endeavor all the more exciting is the presence of Connor Mogul, William Wilton, and Clare Wilton. All three of them—wildly talented in their young ages—are products of the Children’s Theatre work. Watching them grow into fine adult creatives, and blend beautifully with a cast comprised mostly of those in generations before, they’ve managed to hold their own and belong. I would also mention the amazing contributions of Emily Petersen, a fellow Children’s Theatre alumnus, growing a successful career in the community, a dependable YP board-member, and delightfully talented actress who takes on a leading role in this show. Perhaps the biggest surprise, outside of the mind-bending-ending, is the arrival of YP newcomer, Theresa Christiansen. She’s proven to be a burst of theatrical energy and commander of the stage. I’m so grateful she finally crossed that threshold daring to audition. Hers is a presence that should most assuredly be seen often on our stage. Lest we forget the remarkably talented backbone of the cast, C. Danielle Deal and Kelle Widger, who are regular and incredibly versatile ornaments of the YP stage. They bring a level of experience, chemistry, and powerful performances that spark a contagious spirit of fun. As an individual that’s been involved with the Yorkshire Playhouse off-and-on in one capacity or another for the better part of sixteen years, it is indeed a treasure to be a part of this production, at this time, with these marvelous people. Agatha Christie’s, “The Mousetrap”, is one-hundred-percent certified, grade A, high-quality art. The community of York will undoubtedly enjoy this venture thoroughly. After walking - on Boxing Day 2015 - on an extremely windy, cold day we were delighted to see the centre open and in particular the cafe. We received a warm welcome and a hot cup of coffee - much needed. Enjoyed looking around the centre and current art exhibition. Worth a visit just for the cafe Derrick S, Having a bit of spare time just popped in for a quick drink. But had a soup as well. What can I say but wow!! This place must be what everyone dreams about. With views to die for binoculars provided by cafe. Wish I could go again...it looks like it's well supported by the locals and what a assets... A Very Nostalgic First Visit Bob of B, Matlock, United Kingdom A very good local museum that fills what has, in the past, been a serious gap in the town. Newbiggin has a fascinating history and deserves it's story to be told. As an exiled Newbiggin native, I found the displays very nostalgic and, particularly the audio-visual presentation, extremely emotive, but it does concentrate, quite rightly, on the fishing side of the town. I hope the small section on Newbiggin Colliery will be expanded. Great centre WillStaffordshire, Staffordshire This is a small centre in a lovely building. The exhibition is well displayed and gives a great insight into the local community and the brave volunteers. Debris washed up on a beach but no bodies have ever been found. Woodhall, widely known as "Slippery Sean", was friends with Serbian gangsters on the Costa del Sol. He was days from settling a costly divorce. Sensational claims are being made that a group of businessmen who went missing in a mysterious plane crash staged their deaths and fled with millions of pounds. The four debt-ridden Britons were officially on board a small Brazilian charter plane that crashed along the country's coastline last May. A rescue operation was called off when wreckage from the twin-engine Cessna washed up after several days. However, the bodies of the four men and two Brazilian pilots have never been found. The passengers had links to companies that were in financial difficulties and one was less than a week away from settling a costly divorce. Brazilian authorities are still trying to solve the crash riddle but Foreign Office officials last night confirmed that death certificates had been issued to the British families. That has brought some closure to the relatives but a Sunday Express investigation into the flight's central character has discovered doubts over the official version of events. Speculation has been rife among former associates of Sean Woodhall, 43, a convicted fraudster known as "Slippery Sean", that he staged the crash. Among the passengers were 46-yearold Alan Kempson - an acquaintance of Sir John Major - and accountant Nigel Hodges, 52, who both ran sub-prime mortgage broking company Diamond Lifestyle Holdings. Three days before the crash, its shares were suspended from the stock market due to massive funding problems. It is now in liquidation. Also on board was father-of-five Woodhall, who had links to a suspected £100million property scam and was due to settle his divorce within days. Born Sean Lovelock in London in 1965, he grew up in Cambridgeshire but made his business career in the Birmingham area. At 30 he changed his name to his mother's surname, Woodhall, after a row with his father, Ron. In 1999 he married Victoria McLeod, now 39, and two years later was given an 18-month suspended sentence for his part in a fraud with franchising venture Advan. Following that conviction, Woodhall took his heavily pregnant wife to the Costa del Sol where he tapped into Spain's booming property market. For the next few years he worked closely with Staffordshire-based Ocean View Properties, a company run by his friend Colin Thomas. It sold "off-plan" luxury Spanish apartments to British investors, including star sportsmen such as Aston Villa's Gareth Barry, ex-Leicester City captain Matt Elliott and former England cricketer Paul Nixon. The company, which owes more than £100million, is being investigated by the police and the Insolvency Service. According to former business associates, charming Woodhall, who was a serial adulterer, mingled with ruthless Serbian gangsters on the "Costa del Crime" and became one of the area's most well-known faces. A Spanish lifestyle magazine even featured him as one of the region's model businessmen. He also dealt with controversial Spanish developer Ricardo Miranda, who was named by the Sunday Express last month as being a central figure in the alleged Ocean View scam. As funds from Ocean View customers went missing, Miranda and Woodhall, who lived in the same Marbella complex as Sir Mark Thatcher, eyed Caribbean business opportunities. The museum was also highly commended for the Inspiration award category for their submission ‘The Future of Woodhall Spa Museum. The awards celebrate the work taking place in museums, historic houses and heritage sites across the county. This year the entries were judged by David Sleight (Dean of Public Engagement, University of Lincoln, Emma Tatlow (Visit Lincoln Partnership Manager) and Steve LeMottee (Executive Director of East Midland Museum Service). The Cottage Museum recently underwent a significant redevelopment supported by funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Jackie Goodall, who played a key role in the redevelopment and is closely involved with a variety of heritage initiatives, was presented with an award to acknowledge her ‘outstanding contribution to Lincolnshire Heritage’. Woodhall Spa Cottage Museum has an exemplary track record of delivery. Volunteers engage in opportunities presented but don’t overstretch themselves. Plans are measured and exciting and push the boundaries of a volunteer run museum. Projects aim to raise awareness of, and access to, the collection and the facilities that are on offer. The success of this approach and the work of the volunteers has resulted in the following achievements: 2015 September – the John Barker Trophy, Community Building Volunteer Award was presented to Rodger Pickavance. The award is presented by Community Lincs annually and recognises the work of those volunteers who, willingly and freely, give their time and effort to manage and maintain Lincolnshire community buildings. Rodger was the development project leader for the work mainly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund grant. July – the Education Programme won the prestigious Sandford Award for Heritage Education. It recognises and promotes quality and excellence in education provision across the Heritage Sector. Volunteers at the Cottage Museum worked towards the Sandford Award over the course of the past two years. June – the Cottage Museum won the award for Customer Care at the East Midlands Heritage Awards which recognise excellence and innovation at museums across the region. The Cottage Museum was also shortlisted for the Award for Engaging Children and Young People for it’s young Person’s Museum Guide and the Wendy Golland Award for Quality Research for its research into the history of The Petwood Gardens. 2014 September – as part of the 70th anniversary of WWII’s Battle of Arnhem in the Netherlands, a day of events to honour the brave servicemen who took part, was organised by the museum. Hundreds of veterans, dignitaries and families gathered in Woodhall Spa on September 6th to commemorate the region’s involvement. The event was co-ordinated by Jackie Goodall with the help of a team of volunteers from the museum and the local communities in and around Woodhall Spa.
