I’ve always liked the idea of having a fashionable oppa (오빠) and for a time I fixed my standards to these men especially those of Korean dramas: Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo’s Jung Joon Hyung, My First, First Love’s Tae O, and What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim’s Lee Young Joon. I’ve lived in my fantasy as a female lead with these handsome fashionable men as my male leads (Well, it’s a fantasy so might as well dream about the finest men there are on planet Earth, right?).
Korean dramas have been my form of escape and entertainment and they quite struck down with me and more often than not, Korean male leads have set a high standard on men – I mean visually, personality, and style. And I know all the ladies watching out there are screaming how we’d all like to have one Korean male lead in our lives.
Looking back at all the kdramas I’ve watched, there has always been a holy trinity of things you would always find: First is the Korean beauty and skincare which most female leads follow in their nightly routine or injected somehow in the story or a scene. Second is a visually-appealing male lead with an equally visual god of a second lead which tugs a lady’s heart out of proportion. And third is top tier fashion style alluring the viewers of the scenic fashion culture in Korea.
Contemporary South Korean fashion has been growing a steady consumer base with the influence of K-idols and the popularity of kdramas. There are also fashion bloggers and vloggers alike who contribute to advancing the trend to a global scale. But before South Korea became a leading capital of fashion in South Asia and vying for a top spot in global fashion, how did it look?
<h2>History of Fashion in South Korea</h2>
Hanbok (한복) is the classic piece of Korea’s fashion and one of the most common fashion choices during the Joseon period from 1392-1897. Today, hanboks are still immensely present with historical kdramas, the incorporation in many cultural and historical landmarks in Korea such as enabling tourists to wear one while touring, and traditional Korean festivities and ceremonies. H
anboks can be very simple pieces mimicking the everyday life of most Koreans during that era but can also be lavish like royalties. A typical Korean hanbok consists of a blouse on top and loose-fitting pants or skirt for the bottom. Women wear what’s called a ‘jeongi’ (전기) which is a blouse or jacket paired with a ‘chima’ (치마) or skirt. 
The 20th century of Korean fashion is marked by the Japanese occupation and entry of Western influence which powered the modernization of fashion. The conservative culture of hanbok evolved into men wearing suits and women with new hairstyles. 
One of the most famous hairstyles back then was the ‘flapper’ style of the West which dubbed women as a ‘new woman’. Social lifestyles have urged changes in the fashion culture of Korea. 
The militaristic style that has been used as common themes in many Kpop music videos traces back to the Second World War which pushed through the liberation of Korea from Japan and then into the Korean War. Hanbok was still worn up to this day though mainly by women and the war has also created a shortage in fabric which required clothing to be simple and made in dark colors. 
By the 1950s following the end of the Korean War, the fashion culture slowly became vibrant with newer hairstyles born and swimsuits rising in popularity. One monumental fashion scene was the opening of the International Western Clothing Company in Seoul in December 1954. This has provided the first fashion education in South Korea and has also marked the production of clothing in Namdaemun Market and Dongdaemun Market. 
And three years later, the first fashion show was held showcasing the collection of Korea’s first fashion designer, Nora Koh. It also marked another grand moment in Korea’s fashion history wherein fashion designing has been officially labeled as a new career. 
The 1960s welcomed the new wave of fashion, the launch of Korea’s first fashion magazine Uisang, and the establishment and opening of the first professional modeling school. By the 1970s, fashion trends shifted from the designer to the consumer – that is, the consumers became the trendsetters. Off the rack clothing brands and brand-focused stores were also developed during this time. 
Although modern fashion flourished alongside urbanization, the 1960s through 1970s also experienced a harsh and conservative environment under the rule of Park Chung Hee. Instead of cowering down, the youth utilized fashion as an expression of protest and resistance. 
Punk clothing and miniskirts with bold accessories became the trend. Fashion movements did not stop with the assassination of Park Chung Hee in 1979. T-shirts, jumpers, blue jeans, Reebok shoes – the casual clothing line – became the embodiments of protests. 
KPop which catalyzed the K-Fashion and K-beauty culture and industry entered the scene in the 1990s with Seo Tae-ji and Boys. Korean fashion designers were also getting international recognition by this time. From here on, KPop became a powerful influence over K-Fashion with its unique spin on fashion incorporated in their music videos as well as the personal influence of K-idols with their hashtag ootds.
<h2>Contemporary South Korean Fashion: The Evolution of Streetwear Fashion</h2>
The contemporary South Korean fashion is the leading fashion movement to this day and has a big consumer base and following across the globe. It is worn, innovated, and popularized by many K-idols like G-Dragon with his debut with the group Big Bang in 2006. 
G-Dragon has been dubbed by Vogue as one of the biggest Asian fashion moguls. He had established his position in many elite fashion circles and he had grabbed himself luxury brand ambassadorships and associations with the likes of Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Givenchy way before luxury brands tied with Korean idols for endorsements. He was also credited with the current trend of airport fashion among idols. 
In 2015, the prestigious fashion weeks happening over in the cities of Paris and Milan opened in Seoul further cementing South Korea in the global fashion industry. Seoul Fashion Week happens twice a year in March for the Summer/Spring and October for Fall/Winter. It is sponsored by the city of Seoul and conducted by In Motion WW and prides Seoul fashion as inclusive and diverse. 
Seoul Fashion Week has three events. First is the Seoul Collection which features the high-end collection of Korean fashion. Second is the Generation Next which features a fashion design program for designers with 5-year experience or less which encourages unique appearance and creative thinking. And lastly is the Seoul Fashion Fair which aims to build partnerships to compete in the global fashion market. 
Aside from the Seoul Fashion Week, big KPop idol groups have also been headlining local and international brands. The limelight of the fashion scene is expanding and is being defined by BTS and EXO in the male fashion arena while Blackpink and Red Velvet are taking the storm of luxury brand ambassadorships for women. 
In recent fashion development and evolution, Jung Kuho, Executive Director of Seoul Fashion Week in an article published by hypebeast.com in 2017 shared that the Seoul fashion scene “is very much involved with street culture; the city is not really into high-end fashion but more so into affordable streetwear that is influenced by K-pop stars and K-entertainment.” 
The fashion culture is fast and trend-driven. Logo hoodies, statement denim, and fun denim color the streetwear fashion landscape. Brands like Supreme, Balenciaga, OFF WHITE and Vetements are still in as Koreans are still crazy for it. 
<h2>What walks on the runway, walks on the streets</h2>
Definitely what people see walking down the runway is reflective of the scene in the streetwear fashion of South Korea especially now that consumers are the trendsetters especially K-Idols and Kdrama actors.

This drama has been one of the most famous romantic dramas in 2016 which told a coming-of-age story inspired by the life of Olympic gold medalist Jang Miran. Jung Joon Hyung played by Nam Joo Hyuk is a swimmer and a definite campus crush. I know ladies would love a bit of his sporty physique and clingy boyfriend vibes. 
<h4>Athleisure </h4>
Athleisure is a trend that is here to stay. With the mix of comfort and style, everyone’s trying to cop out this style. In a story published by the Business Insider, Deirdre Clemente, a professor of history at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas said that “Athleisure is the new casual.” 
It’s the sum of innovation. Activewear for athletes has always been on the lookout on creating better fabrics to improve the performance of their athletes and style brings more on the table especially in the consumer base. It has garnered the votes of celebrities and a common fashion style when they’re not walking the runway or going on a quick stylish weekend. 
The athleisure style is also well-executed in the growing fashion of South Korea with idols using this style during their off-duty days or also known during preparation for a comeback season. It’s like the comfortable version of avant-garde fashion which mixes high-end style with functionality. 
<h4>Oversized Everything </h4>
To dress as a campus crush, you can style with oversized items like oversized sweaters, large-sized hoodies, or baggy pants. This trend is reminiscent of the 90s grunge era which made its entrance in Seoul Fashion Week. 
Oversized can be a drowning style so make sure you keep the balance when working on this one. You can cop out oversized sweaters – the style depends on your style and preference but it’s good to keep a simple pattern or style (like an asymmetrical hem) on your closet which you can use on many different occasions. 
There’s also the large-sized hoodies which girlfriends like to steal and one of the staple campus crush trends. Baggy pants and loose fittings are also hot on the trend.

Korea experiences rather chilly and frigid weather most time of the year and jackets are one of the most staple items in the closet. And for this year’s trend, the jacket gets a unique Korean spin with dramatic puffed sleeves or leather jackets with edgy details like asymmetrical hems. 
These are usually worn with simple white clothes underneath to make the jacket shine. If you’re looking for a next-door vibe, get one statement jacket!

Statement tees are level ups of your basic shirts which gives additional personality to your outfit and definitely screams boy next door (boyfriend) look. You can style it up with a denim jacket to give a more defined look.

It was 2012 when I started college and I distinctly remember getting close with my freshman roommate after we watched a few of her kpop recommendations. First of which was Taeyang’s Wedding Dress (which was honestly a tearjerker!). 
But I didn’t get hooked until a year later during my sophomore year when I got introduced to the first boys who would turn out to change my life forever. You’ve probably heard this in all kpop anecdotes but it’s true. It wasn’t some monumental change in preference because I’ve been watching kdrama for years. Nor was it a grand gesture of high scooping me from my lows, lulling me of pain and giving me comfort. It was just casual yet over time I realized it was one of the best decisions I have ever made in life and laughingly, I have only made a few bests in my twenty-five years of existence.
EXO was my first dive into kpop and I literally learned how to sing Don’t Go in Korean – my favorite XOXO B-side track. After them, I’ve learned to explore more into kpop and found myself addicted to BTS which has become my main bias group, Seventeen, Twice, Red Velvet, and Mamamoo to name a few more.  And the more I got into kpop, not only did they influence my music and perspective, so did my fashion style. 
When people think about Korean music videos, they simply jump to an image of “bubble-gum aesthetic” with bright coloured, mismatched, and highly eccentric outfits – a product of South Korea’s expressive and unique fashion. And they’re not wrong. Back when I started “stanning” them, I was introduced to their loud and boisterous music video and fashion aesthetics. 
I remember watching Girls’ Generation’s (SNSD) I Got A Boy music video which featured colorful outfits with each member having an individual style that leaves an impact image on your mind just like Sunny’s mint green curly hair dressed up with an oversized denim jacket with leopard print, denim shorts, printed leggings, and boots. There’s also GOT7’s Just Right in 2015, a true bubble-gum music and aesthetic. One of the most memorable outfits back then for me was Mark’s yellow hoodie with printed donuts with his blonde hair and pink bangs highlight. This was the music video that has attracted a lot of fans and formed the strong fanbase of ahgasses.
But if you’ve ever watched and explored more kpop music videos or paid a bit of attention to the “Hallyu Wave” as people would like to call it, you’d know that kpop has always been known for its unique take on fashion and haven’t shied away from different genres. And as a major industry in Korea’s entertainment, they have influenced a lot of fashion styles and even set trends!
Case in point, F(x) wore the tennis skirt style during their promotions for “First Love” and after two years in 2016, a tennis skirt craze overcame Korea. Fans were quick to point and agree that this was the impact of F(x). Another style that trended from a music video was the iconic colored pants from SHINee’s Juliette. You must have probably bought a pair or two of these colored skinny jeans dubbed by Korean media as “SHINee’s trend”.
KPop is also known for its artistic take on revolutionary social change shown through the usage of military concepts in their music videos – that is, camo, elaborate trench coats, and combat boots. 
Brown Eyed Girls donned the urban fit with a twist ditching the usual all army green ensemble to a style closer to their sexy signature. In their music video for “Sixth Sense”, the girls wore plastic-y burgundy trench coats, thigh-high boots, hot pants, and tops with gold tassels – a fashion statement that calls for freedom of speech by “shaking the norms and reinterpreting set concepts”. 
In the boy group arena, B.A.P. shows off the same level of revolutionary vibe with their music video, “Power”. They were dressed in “camo cargo pants and jackets, tag necklaces, wheat Timberland boots, and black suspenders labeled ‘army’ ” as they sang about justice and revolt against the system. 
BTS, the most popular boy group in South Korea and internationally-acclaimed music artists, has also shown different shades of the Korean male fashion with their music videos. They started with “No More Dream” branding themselves with a hip-hop rebel concept talking about dreaming out of the box. A first of their dark and wild vibe. 
The group also featured the schoolboy concept with their Boy in Luv music video and then transitioned to more pastel aesthetics with Boy with Luv coupled with denim. They also repped in pink – BTS Jin’s signature color – putting together different shades and textures which perfectly conveyed their message. 
They also picked up the streetwear style using it to depict the ‘effortless yet cool’ vibe who called out on the haters and the naysayers with their famous “Mic Drop” music video teasing “Did you see my bag?”.  And who can ever forget their sexy suits in Blood, Sweat, and Tears with BTS Jimin and JHope’s iconic choker and v-necked style? They put in a regal look in lustful undertones – a simple yet elegant take for a suit.
The KPop industry has set precedent for trends and boundary-breaking fashion. They have always been bold in a fashion-forward movement and have helped Seoul solidify its position in the fashion arena aligning with major cities like Paris and Milan. 
<h2>What is the personal role of idols in influencing Korean fashion?</h2>
KPop is considered South Korea’s number one cultural export. After the popularity peak of the culture of dramas, beauty and skincare, Kpop is becoming the next trend. This trend development was termed as the “Hallyu wave” coined in the 1990s by a Chinese newspaper used to encompass the influence of Korea in many different aspects across the globe. It cemented its global influence with the catchy “Gangnam Style”  in 2012 by Psy which has overtaken local and international music and has put people in a “Last Song Syndrome” or LSS.
Now highly influenced by Korean idols, South Korea has become South Asia’s leading fashion capital championing expression and individuality in style. Though most idols have curated styles banking on capital consumerism which encourages fans to purchase what they wear or to put forth the brands that they are endorsing for public exposure, not everything they wear is a “forced” fashion choice. <h3>Big Bang’s GDragon (GD) aka Kwon Jiyong: The Rebellious Fashion Staple Name</h3>
I think no fashionista list is ever complete without GD at the forefront and it can even be counted as blatant disrespect to South Korea’s fashion culture to not include him.

That was GD’s take when asked about his rebellious trendsetting style. Even as new generations of idol groups come and go and with younger male idols trending for their fashion style, GD remains a style icon and unbeatable in the fashion arena. 
In 2017, he was named by the Business of Fashion in their “500 People Shaping the Global Fashion Industry” alongside high-end fashion names. He has forged his way through the global fashion circle and formed a close friendship with Karl Lagerfeld even becoming the Chanel’s muse way before the luxury brand ambassadorships of Korean idols trended. According to Vogue, GDragon is “one of the biggest Asian fashion moguls”. He was the first idol to be invited in Paris Fashion Week and has close associations with other luxury brands such as Givenchy and Louis Vuitton. It was even reported that LVMH (Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton) has invested $50 million to YG Entertainment – the entertainment agency handling GD and Big Bang – in 2014.
GD’s style is often described as unisex in beauty and temptation with his heavy eyeliner, slim figure, and feminine dressing style. Throughout his KPop career which started from 2006, he has experimented with a lot of styles ranging from dramatic, edgy, and dark to military, eclectic punk, denim on denim casual style, to color craze. 
He has sported different hair colors – one of the many iconic KPop characteristics – and has labelled him as the ‘iguana idol’. He has never been one to be afraid of experimenting and getting out of his comfort zone. One of many fan favorite hairstyles of his was his 2012 cotton candy fluff during his “Crayon” promotions. Another one that stamps its position on the fan-favorite list is his platinum faux hawk which he rocked in 2013 with his “Crooked” promotions. Though even as a style icon, GD had also headlined the bad hair days with his dubbed ‘tamago hair’ during the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) which he acknowledged through a tweet.
Aside from being a luxury brand ambassador, he is also associated with streetwear fashion through brands like Ambush and KTZ. He has also made his footprint as a fashion icon with his brand PeaceMinusOne in 2016 run with his stylist Gee Eun which featured caps with long straps and clips. 
<h3>SHINee’s Key aka Kim Kibum: The Genderless Avant-Garde Fairy </h3>
Key has been one of the “key” names in South Korean fashion culture following his debut with SHINee in 2008. He flaunts avant-garde style – a combination of high fashion and function – in his daily outfits and is known for styling designer brands to a comfortable and casual look. 
In a youtube collaboration with JAYKEEOUT x VWVB in 2018, Key shared his perspective on content creation and his role as an “ambassador of genderless fashion”. He expressed that at first, he wasn’t always comfortable promoting genderless fashion and noted that it wasn’t in his stylistic preference. As mentioned before, Korea is yet to break through old conservative boundaries and embracing new concepts such as genderless fashion. Yet, he realized how this style suits him well and makes him stand out which is why he decided to embrace it and push the acceptance of genderless fashion in society.

Or when a male celebrity endorses a female cosmetic brand, the angle is usually like men wanting to see women in that certain product. Key is also one of the few artists during his time who is personally involved with the style that he shows on stage. As he said in one interview with SHINee that he discusses what he wears with his stylists. His popular daily style includes a “shorts suit” and a variety of caps and hats. 
Like GD, Key is also one who never shied away in trying different hair colors and styles. And when it comes to iconic hairstyles, Shawols will approve that Key’s eccentric half-shaved hair during the “Lucifer” era may top the list.

It can change not only how they are on that specific time, but also their future as a nation. There can be many reasons for war to happen. It can be done to control a country’s natural resources. Other wars happen for religious or cultural reasons. Some happen because of political balances of power. One particular reason for war is done to settle arguments about land or territory and power. This is the cause of the 1950 Korean War.
Nowadays, we often hear news about North Korea and South Korea’s conflicts. This conflict has started ever since the end of World War II. After the Imperial Japanese occupation in 1945, Korea was divided into two parts: North Korea and South Korea. The Northern part became a communist government ruled by the Soviet Union. However, the Southern part was a non-Communist government ruled by the United States. This alone sparked a lot of conflicts between the two. The border was set at 38th parallel in 1948 which made it official. As a result, there were two sovereign states caused by the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the United States.
The Korean War sparked in 1950 when North Korean Communist army crossed the border at 38th parallel and invaded the non-Communist South Koreans. They quickly overran South Korea but the United States came quickly to South Korea’s aid. General Douglas McArthur, the general that was assigned to oversee South Korea quickly sent orders to the US Forces to keep the Northern army at Pusan. The war went on for three years until 1953. When Eisenhower became President, he organized an audience with the communists and signed a peace treaty at Panmunjom which ended the Korean War. Korea returned to its divided status with two sovereign states: South Korea and North Korea. Nowadays, tensions still run high between North Korea and South Korea.
They both have laws preventing citizens from the other side to cross the border, except for a few conditions. It’s easy to enter South Korea but traveling to North Korea is impossible. The nearest that you can get to North Korea is the DMZ or North Korean demilitarized zone. This is along the border that separates the two sovereign states and you’ll even see their military officers stand face to face and feel all the tension. If you’re from South Korea, you cannot enter the DMZ but if you have a foreign passport, they will allow you to enter.
Keeping track and learning about the Korean War is not very exhausting and time consuming as it only lasted for three years unlike major wars like World War II. The main focus of this war is the conflict between the two sovereign states of Korea: South Korea and North Korea. Luckily for you, there are a lot of movies made to make things interesting. Taegukgi provided a great emotional resonance for the people of South Korea that’s why it became such a big hit. It also was truly an epic movie to watch. It featured a lot of battle scenes – from fighting in the hills of the 38th parallel border, to the more specific battles like the urban warfare in Pyongyang.
This movie also had top quality of cinematography, acting, and special effects. Taegukgi was South Korea’s first movie about the Korean War to have such a big budget which was very critical. The high acceptance and appreciation of the netizens to this film paved the way for the other movies that you’ll probably see in this list.

The movie focused mainly on the soldiers of both armies and how they pondered over and over again about the reason why they keep on fighting the war. As it turns out, the only reason they’re doing this is because the war has been their way of life for the past three years. It seemed like a mandatory thing to do for them. The movie teaches us that war is brutal and senseless. 
The movie comes with a lot of action – from suspenseful sniper attacks to countless number of human charge attacks. The movie never had any intentions to have an ideological meaning. They only wanted to show everyone how it was to be a Korean soldier in the time of the Korean War. 
<h2>Pohwa Sogeuro / 71: Into the Fire</h2>

To be able to keep the perimeter safe, the South Korean army officers fought alongside the US military forces.
They faced the most feared North Korean army, the 766th Unit, at a middle school located in Pohang. This movie featured a lot of great actors and artists including the famous K-Pop singer T.O.P. as one of the protagonists of the movie. This movie never failed to show the intense sacrifice of the 71 student soldiers as they face the enemy’s very intense firepower and lose a lot of people along the way.

They become very confused as to why the new visitors were wearing such uniforms and were pointing sticks, what really is a gun, at each other.
The officers from both sides became very fond of the people in Dongmakgol and their innocence. They then teamed up with each other to keep Dongmakdol the way that it is, with all the innocence and pure, kind hearted people. Welcome to Dongmakgol is a film that you will surely enjoy. It has comedy, drama, tension, and a very touching story that can keep you interested. It also offers us the view on how humanity encompasses even the most brutal wars and brings opposing sides together. This incident killed hundreds of South Korean refugees which were fired upon American air strikes and the 7th Calvary troops.
Although this incident happened from July 26 to July 29 of the year 1950, this event only became known in 1999 when a group of Associated Press journalists published a story based on the testimony of both the 7th US Calvary groups and the survivors. It was turned into a book called “The Bridge at No Gun Ri.” The release of this story sparked an Anti-American sentiment among South Korean netizens.
Even though this story isn’t a very big part of the Korean War, it’s still a very important part of Korean history to note for. 
<h2>Wolmido</h2>

To change things up, we added Wolmido to the list. Wolmido is one of the most popular North Korean movies about the Korean War. This movie tells us the story from the Northern side of Korea of the Battle of Incheon in September of the year 1950. This is the battle where the General of the Army, General Douglas McArthur led 40,000 troops using naval ships to protect South Korea. 
The Battle of Incheon was also called “Operation Chromite.” This certain battle lasted for 4 days in Incheon. Wolmido is named after an island off of Incheon’s coast. In this particular movie, a coastal battery from North Korea is placed in Incheon to defend the island. Although there are a few overdramatized scenes, Wolmido will give you a peak on how North Koreans viewed the Korean War. 
<h2>Maiwei / My Way</h2>

Want a movie with the story revolving around a Korean and his World War II experience? Then you’re in for a treat with the Korean movie entitled Maiwei. This movie is inspired by the true life story of the protagonist named Yang Kyoungjong. It all started when he was forced to join the Imperial Japanese army during World War II when Imperial Japanese took over Korea. After being deployed, he got caught by the Soviets in the Battle of Khalkyn Gol, the battle between the Soviets and the Japanese regarding their Soviet – Japanese borders.
Once he was deployed again, now for the Soviet army, he was then caught by the Germans while fighting them on the Easter Front. He was then placed on the Wehrmacht, the German army, just in time for the D-day or also known as the Normandy landings. D-day, secretly known as Operation Neptune, is a historic event wherein the largest seaborne invasion was done by the German army to Normandy, France. During this historic event, he was once again caught by Americans.
This movie is filled with all type of action from the different World War II fronts which you may find interesting. I’m positive that you’re also very interested with the plot of this movie and with the constant times that he was caught by hos enemies. This is a must watch movie because you can learn a lot about the different battles, events and situations during the World War II. 
<h2>Gukjesijang / Ode To My Father</h2>

Have you ever watched Forrest Gump? The next movie is more of a Korean counterpart for the movie Forrest Gump. It’s called Gukjesijang or Ode to my Father. Although most part of the movie isn’t during war time, the most significant scenes are. This movie doesn’t only show us events from the Korean War, but also from the Vietnamese war. 
The story revolves around the protagonist named Yeon Deok-soo as he escapes Korea during the Hungnam Evacuation. He takes a ride on the SS Meredith Victory, an American ship used to transport 14, 000 Korean refugees to Busan. After arriving in Busan, he became a shoe-shine boy and shined the shoes of a man called Mr. Chung. That Mr. Chung turned out to be Chung Ju-yung, the founder of Hyundai group. To be able to let his sister hold a wedding, Yeon went to Vietnam to be a civilian contractor. That’s where he experienced the troubles of the Vietnam war.
The Korean war caused a lot of families to be separated, and Yeon’s case is no exception. He was separated with his father and sister during the Hungnam Evacuation and that’s what prompted the title of this movie. If you’re interested to watch this movie, make sure to prepare a lot of tissues in advance. 
<h2>Hayan Jeonjaeng / White Badge</h2>

Another war that the Koreans participated in is the Vietnam War. Unbeknownst to a lot of people, South Korea actually sent more than 300, 000 troops to fight in the Vietnam War. It made them second-largest contribution for this war. During this time, South Korea’s ruler used this opportunity to curry in favors with US. The movie White Badge was released not long after the country sought democracy. 
This movie was declared as the most renowned Korean film about the Vietnam War. It is based on the story of a South Korean veteran from the Vietnam War named Ahn Jung-hyo. This movie shows us the trauma that war brings to a certain person. It shows how hard it is for a person who experienced being in the frontline of wars to adjust to his postwar life with the ghosts of his experiences haunting him every now and then. The movie also showed events from the Vietnam war as shown in flashbacks.
White Badge is a great movie to watch to understand the hardships and sacrifices that soldiers, not just Korean soldiers, have gone through in order to protect our lives. 
<h2>Yeonpyeong Hajeon / Northern Limit Line</h2>

Another movie that revolves around the Korean war is the Northern Line Limit. This movie revolves on the story of the Second Battle of Yeonpyeong’s intense seaborne actions. In June 29, 2002, North Korean patrol boats fired upon South Korean patrol boats because of a maritime border dispute in Yeonpyeong. A similar confrontation had already taken place in 1999. Two patrol boats from North Korea contested the borders and fired on the South Korean patrol boats. A series of back-and-forth attacks killed almost a dozen from each side.
The North Korean patrol boats retreated before South Korean reinforcements came. The title “Northern Limit Line” is the actual name of the maritime border between South Korea and North Korea. This happened at the same time that South Korea is co-hosting the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Japan. The events were being held on South Korea when this border incident happened. This is a good movie to watch as it will show you how gruesome a naval battle can be. It will also show you how courageous and strong-willed you should be to become a sailor in the South Korean Navy.
This movie will make you feel a lot of respect for those men in uniform and all the things they do.

These prove difficult for new groups yet to be exposed to the public. But despite that, 2020-2022 has been an amazing era for rookie idols who have come out to be the best among the rest. 
Here are 9 monster rookie groups who are South Korea’s current cream of the crop. 
<h3>Treasure</h3>
Treasure is a group that debuted under the intense pressure of YG’s survival show, the “Treasure Box.” They debuted in the summer of 2020 and have been popular with local and overseas fans. The group is famous for catchy tracks and creative performances, and we have no doubt they’ll rise to be more popular in the coming years.

Survival shows have been on a roll for the past few years, especially since agencies have seen how effective they are for exposure. The recent “Girls Planet 999”, a survival show created by MNET produced Kep1er, who debuted with a catchy track, “WA DA DA.” The song is 6 months old and currently has 121 million views on YouTube. The group is a wonderful mixture of girls who have already debuted and are looking for new opportunities and new youngsters who are reaching for their dreams.

aespa debuted in November 2020, making them only one and a half years old. But don’t be fooled by that number, for this monster rookie group had experienced what most veteran groups have. Their debut music video “Black Mamba” was the fastest to reach 100 million views, their song “Next Level” went viral with its catchy tune and trendy dance, while their recent track “Savage” was the only song released by a girl group in 2021 to achieve a perfect all-kill. They also performed on various shows in the US, including Coachella and Jimmy Kimmel Live.

Another group that is a product of a survival show is ENHYPEN. The group was formed in the show I-LAND, a group survival reality show by Belift Lab. They debuted in November 2020 with “Given-Taken” and won the “Best New Male Artist” award at the Mnet Asian Music Awards 2021, and had their popularity catapulted with their title track “Drunk-Dazed” in May. ENHYPEN is looking good this 2022 for sure.

IVE debuted in December 2021, making them a 7-month-old group. But their achievements are off the roof! Their debut song, “Eleven” is heard almost everywhere upon its release. Combined with the girls’ amazing talents, visuals, and performance, it is no doubt they’ll reach for more! Their recent song “Love Dive” also received the same (if not, more) love than Eleven, and that’s just two tracks under their belt! We are excited for more!

When Le Sserafim was confirmed to debut in May 2022, everyone was sure that the group would be a huge hit! They have a fantastic lineup, with 3 girls already exposed to the public for participating in Produce48 (2 members debuted with IZ*ONE). Their first mini-album “FEARLESS” sold more than 180,000 copies just two days after its release and entered Spotify Global Top 200 chart, the shortest time a girl group entered the chart with its debut song.
