60.

Of late things have been hard.

 61.
My heart is broken. Broken again, for the 3477th time this life.

 62.
“Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time,” wrote E. B. White, to a despairing Mr. Nadeau. The actual first paragraph of White’s letter said:

 63.
“As long as there is one upright man, as long as there is one compassionate woman, the contagion may spread and the scene is not desolate. Hope is the thing that is left to us, in a bad time. I shall get up Sunday morning and wind the clock, as a contribution to order and steadfastness.”

 64.
I must say, on this journey, I have met some extraordinary people. Amazing, wonderful people. They hail from disparate walks of life, different races, different cultural backgrounds. Some are immigrants, no two from the same country of origin.

 65.
They share a love for Freedom.

 66.
They are passionate. They are quirky. They are independent. They tend to be wildly intelligent and creative and brimming with life.

 67.
They tend to be honest.

 68.
Right now some feel inconsolable.

 69.
I feel fortunate to have encountered these souls, who are all, as I am, beset with difficult feelings.

 70.
People I considered friends have shown their true colors. I know now who really has my back. It’s painful and it’s good.

 71.
I counseled some lovely friends: “We must think of ourselves as the Londoners during the War. They thought God had forgotten them. God-Goddess-All-that-Is hadn’t forgotten them then, and hasn’t forgotten us now.”

 72.
But E.B. White that masterful wordsmith said it better:

 73.
It is quite obvious that the human race has made a queer mess of life on this planet. But as a people we probably harbor seeds of goodness that have lain for a long time waiting to sprout when the conditions are right. Man’s curiosity, his relentlessness, his inventiveness, his ingenuity have led him into deep trouble. We can only hope that these same traits will enable him to claw his way out.

 74.
Hang on to your hat. Hang on to your hope. And wind the clock, for tomorrow is another day.

 75.
So tomorrow I will rise too early, as always. Luminate coffee with coconut creamer and coconut sugar, beguiling and delicious. I will wind the clock.

 103.

My latest on Medium Online is “The End of the Beginning: Eight of Sabin Howard’s Doughboys Get Ready to Go Back to Europe.”

 104.
I wrote it to share–to celebrate–a milestone: Sabin and his stalwart team have finished principal sculpture on the first grouping of eleven figures from A Soldier’s Journey.

 105.
I’m so proud of our sculptors Sabin, Charlie, and “Raymond.” They’ve worked with focus and dedication through long hours and difficult situations.

 106.
I’m also terribly proud of our good-spirited models. They also worked hard over the last year, especially during the quarantine months. Everyone has made sacrifices and accommodations for the good of the project.

 107.
This achievement is hard-won. It’s sweet for us.

 108.
It makes it worthwhile, almost, to have to deal with the belligerence and incompetence of outside parties. They’re a necessary evil. Doesn’t make them easy to handle. I brace myself before every phone call, conference, meeting, and visit. I’m always relieved when contact concludes.

 109.
It’s true that I have a particular failing in not tolerating fools gladly. My shrink has been yelling at me for a decade about that. Regarding my lack of patience for a**holes and idiots: it’s not exactly ego syntonic, it’s just not exactly ego dystonic, either.

 110.
But back to the trolls. What’s the point of being an aggressive jerk with people who are working hard, in good faith, toward a mutual goal? It mystifies me.

 111.
We were actually threatened with a “bloody fistfight” because the global pandemic posed challenges for our shipping plans. Do you believe that? HELLO: THERE’S A GLOBAL PANDEMIC.

 112.
And we were threatened after we had formed a quarantine pod, lived together, and worked together, all toward this end: meeting our deadlines.

 113.
The “bloody fistfight” folks are petty and unhelpful. Then there are the incompetent folks: “Thank you for your patience while we slowly and belatedly attend to an important matter that you told us about two months ago and then again last week. That matter we assured you was well in hand a month ago.”

 114.
Grr.

 115.
And there’s the guy who actually tried to tell me what to write. I thought I managed that situation well. I explained that my diction could have been worse. I didn’t tell him to go f**k himself.

 116.
It’s frustrating. I’m frustrated. I surmise that everyone living within a 75 mile radius of Washington DC is some species of awful. People far from the Beltway incorrectly assume that one political party is awful and the other is okay, depending on their personal predilections, and which media they allow to them what to think. It’s actually far more widespread than that. The whole DC area is toxic. Political party doesn’t matter.

 117.
The sole exception is our brilliant attorney. But he’s from the heartland and he lived in Germany for a while. He hasn’t been spoiled with the DC power-lust.

 118.
And so this is difficult for me. And yet, and yet… Sabin and the team have completed the first 28% of A Soldier’s Journey, and it’s beautiful. Uplifting, gripping. My husband’s skill is amazing. I’m so proud of him and so proud to have served the process in my way.

 119.

 171.
The world is rife with panic and pandemic.

 172.
People are sick. People are dying. The COVID-19 respiratory illness is sweeping across the globe. No place will be spared.

 173.
Italy is quarantining. Have the Italians stopped their millennia-old practice of bussing on both sides of the face in greeting?

 174.
I bet they have. Kissing is for the inviolate.

 175.
The macrocosm is a mess. In the microcosm, in the tiny whimsical, poignant slice of All-That-Is that is my personal life, a chaos stew bubbles.

 176.
One friend died of a drug overdose.

 177.
Did she intend to die?

 178.
I was close to her during grad school. I remember her talent, her intellect, and her bright smile. Could I have done anything else to help her?

 179.
A beloved family member succumbs to cancer, by degrees. He’s in palliative care now. It’s hard to watch a good man die.

 180.
A beloved friend is mentally absent. Something has claimed her wonderful intelligence. She tells me the same stories over and over, sometimes beginning the anecdote mere seconds after finishing it.

 181.
I have pulled away from a friend whom I love. I can not tolerate her lack of truthfulness and lack of consistency right now. Usually I can shrug off her failings because I remember my own flaws, and because I have in mind her many wonderful qualities: her extraordinary generosity, her capacity for lovingkindness, her playfulness. But right now, the lack of truthfulness and lack of dependability feel like too much chaos, in a world that is seething with chaos.

 206.

Since August 26, I’ve been ensconced in an office in my husband’s new studio. Sabin and his team are sculpting the National WWI Memorial.

 207.
I have a life in the studio.

 208.
I’m the project manager. I’m also Human Resources and CFO of Sabin Howard Sculpture LLC.

 209.
There are plenty of non-glamorous, essential tasks in this job for which I roll up my sleeves and apply the grease of my elbows. I’m not just talking about sweeping the floor, emptying trash, and lugging around bronze sculptures, though I’ve done that, too.

 210.
I mean things like running payroll, signing checks, tracking hours spent on each figure… Project management is a first cousin to juggling. You know, 1000 balls in the air, and they’d all better stay afloat.

 211.
Along the way, I engage in more pleasurable activities–like writing articles. Here’s my latest on Medium, entitled, “The Many Faces of Sabin Howard’s National WWI Memorial.”

 212.
Given our interest in WWI, a friend took me to the DGA to see 1917 when it came out. Great movie! Highly recommended! I wrote a review.

 213.
I take photographs almost every day; our daughter put together a video for us. Her YouTube video shows us getting back to work after the holiday break.

 214.

 215.
And here’s a video that I put together. It’s a little rough but fun–it shows Sabin and his crew taking the memorial relief outside into daylight to see it out doors, the way visitors will see it once it’s installed in Pershing Park, Washington DC.

 216.
So I do find ways to exercise my own creativity on this journey alongside my husband.

 239.
One of my dear ones marches inexorably toward his passing. Another dear one walks this journey with him, holding his hand.

 240.
I admire her patience and resolve. She’s been stronger than she ever imagined possible. It’s marvelous and poignant to take in her acceptance and her softness in the face of an unimaginable loss.

 241.
Even for one like me, who sometimes sees through the veil, this process of dying is a panorama of terrible grandeur. Sometimes my breath barely comes in beholding it.

 242.
I pray for ease and peace for him.

 243.
I pray for solace and the sure knowing of love for her.

 244.
I pray that the Great Mystery will hold them both tenderly in this moment when neither can avoid the truth of our core essence.

 245.
And I pray for myself that I may honor and support them in ways they can receive.

 281.
It’s been an intense month as we prepared to get to this moment, when Sabin and his team are actually sculpting.

 282.
 283.
 284.
 285.
We had a brand new studio–unfinished–to contend with. Indeed, guys were still in the studio grouting tiles when we started work the first day!

 286.
 287.
 288.
 289.
The team of sculptors is first rate and the models are terrific.

 290.
 291.
 292.
 293.
We had photographers here on Day 1 and Sabin was captured talking about sculpting. It’s a short, sweet YouTube video:

 357.
I emailed this letter to Portland Mayor Tom Wheeler

 358.
 359.
 360.
 361.
Dear Mayor Wheeler,

 362.
 363.
 364.
 365.
Like millions of Americans, I am shocked by the violence of Antifa in Portland, Oregon.

 366.
 367.
 368.
 369.
In particular, I am horrified at the assault on journalist Andy Ngo.

 370.
 371.
 372.
 373.
But the trouble in Portland has been going on for a while.

 374.
 375.
 376.
 377.
My husband and I have been hearing reports of how bad things are in your city. Last spring when our daughter in her last year of medical school was creating her list for internship and residency, we counseled her against Portland. She has a close childhood friend in Portland, and she liked the program where she interviewed, but we advised her to look elsewhere to complete her medical training.

 378.
 379.
 380.
 381.
We discussed with her how Antifa controlled Portland and harassed citizens who were not in line with their radical beliefs. That was before Antifa attacked Andy Ngo.

 382.
 383.
 384.
 385.
I said, “Antifa is an aggressive, psychopathic militia—like the Brown Shirts under the Nazis. Don’t be fooled by their claims of trying to help the unfortunate. They are an intolerant and totalitarian group of enforcers who use violence to achieve their goals. And they are being condoned by the Mayor and the governance of Portland. You deserve a safe and peaceful city for your medical training.”

 386.
 387.
 388.
 389.
She is a fine student and a splendid doctor and she was matched to her first choice: it was NOT Portland.

 390.
 391.
 392.
 393.
For your consideration, I am a registered Democrat. So is my husband.

 394.
 395.
 396.
 397.
I wanted to let you know that there are consequences for Portland when a group of thugs controls the city. Wise people avoid Portland.

 398.
 399.
 400.
 401.
Sincerely,

 402.
 403.
 404.

 439.
Of the rainy morning, drinking my coffee: heavy cream and coconut sugar. I am thinking about the week passed.

 440.
 441.
 442.
 443.
Due to PR efforts for the National World War I Memorial that Sabin is sculpting, there’s an article about me in The New London Day. Perhaps now it’s the The Connecticut Day.

 444.
 445.
 446.
 447.
The writer, Lee Howard, no relation to my husband, wrote a wonderful article about my participation in the WWI Memorial as a model in the relief. Howard is a skilled writer and the piece is lovely–warmly written and respectful. He quoted me correctly. He portrayed me with both kindness and some playfulness.

 448.
 449.
 450.
 451.
I particularly liked that he quoted what I said about appearing in Sabin’s amazing relief:

 454.
 455.
“All told, it’s pretty cool,” she said. “Perhaps (someday) one of my great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandchildren will stand in front of the relief and look at my face and feel our connection.”

 497.
Sometimes it feels as if my life has been taken over by Sabin’s mandate. Other times, I think I’m fulfilling an old contract…one that he and I negotiated in the Before Times, when we were deciding to come together during this life for our lessons and our love.

 501.
One of my favorite astrologers told me that I was in a progressed waning Moon cycle, and that feels about right. The light will return to me. Just not yet.

 509.
In the meantime, I’m happy to write about my talented husband. I’m proud of his work! I’m proud of him. It’s about what happens when the ancient art of sculpting in clay collides with the newest digital technology.

 522.
 523.
 524.
 525.
Moreover, we received word that our book The Art of Life was happily ensconced in the Watson Library of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which delighted me, indeed. Sabin and I worked together to write this photo-essay of classical figurative sculpture through the ages, and it was independently published. Take that, Phaidon and Taschen!

 557.
I was invited by a dear friend who’s an Austrian Countess.

 558.
What a gorgeous gala! Filled with music, song, fashion, and delectable food. Not to mention the fascinating people I encountered.

 559.
I loved the ball and enjoyed myself immensely. It was the most beautiful pageantry! It was truly a treat and I recommend it.

 619.
 620.
 621.
 622.
2018 was a helluva year. This is my personal, highly idiosyncratic take on the Best of 2018. I hope you enjoy the list and I hope it inspires you.

 623.
 624.
 625.
 626.
Best Movie: A Star Is Born. I cried like a baby at the end. Love always contains loss, love and loss nest inside each other like Russian matryoshka dolls. And how great was the music?

 627.
 628.
 629.
 630.
Best Book I read: The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by John Gottman, PhD. This was a tough choice, I read a lot of great books. I’ll mention Jordan Peterson‘s 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos; The Coddling of the American Mind; John Medina’s Brain Rules; and Scott Adams‘ Win Bigly. Oh, and I’ve been working my way through Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking Fast and Slow. In the end, I chose the book that resonated most deeply for the way of the human heart. Dr. Gottman’s work is amazing, and he rocks!

 631.
 632.
 633.
 634.
Best Song: Shallow, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. I mean, right?!?!

 635.
 636.
 637.
 638.
Best TV Show: The Big Bang Theory. I’m binge-watching. I keep plunking down the $ on Amazon Prime for each season. It just makes me happy to snuggle up with my husband at night and watch a few episodes–giggling at my own inner nerd as much as at Sheldon, Leonard, and the gang. “Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery…”

 639.
 640.
 641.
 642.
Best Place to Visit: The Dolomites. A world heritage site. Awe-inspiring grandeur. And after a day of hiking up and down the mountains, you get to eat Italian food! How great is that?

 643.
 644.
 645.
 646.
Best Restaurant in Manhattan: The Fairway Cafe. The service is spotty, the noise rattles the windows, and the food is tasty. Go for the yummy eats, not the ambiance. It’s New York for New Yorkers.

 647.
 648.
 649.
 650.
Best Yoga Studio in NYC: Yogaworks UWS. Thoughtful teachers, a caring community. Alas, it closed at the end of November. I miss it.

 651.
 652.
 653.
 654.
Cutest Grandson: Mine.

 655.
 656.
 657.
 658.
