.
Classeq says a desire to stay ahead of the curve and create an offer capable of transcending its increasingly global customer base was key to the recent overhaul of its undercounter dishwasher portfolio.

.
.
.
.
Earlier this year the company unveiled a transformation of its core product line, streamlining the range from 16 models previously to just four now.

.
.
.
.
Crucially, the new SKUs carry significantly more features as standard than customers would have received when purchasing Classeq’s base-level undercounter machines before.

.
.
.
.
The re-engineering of the range has seen the brand focus heavily on simplicity – both in terms of use and set-up as well as cleaning and servicing.

.
.
.
.
But why overhaul the product range in the first place, especially after the company has continued to post strong growth in recent years.

.
.
.
.
“We all know that complacency can get you in trouble at times, and no matter how tempting it is to rest on your laurels, we owe it to the market and to our customers to move ahead,” explains managing director Andy Salter.

.
.
.
.
“Plus, we had motivation – we wanted to deliver the best possible machine to operators and be ahead of the market. My fear was that the time would pass us by, and two years later, we would be playing catch up rather than leading the way. Working in chaos only leads to poor results, rushed product development, and subpar output.”

.
.
.
.
The new Classeq C400 and C500 models were officially rolled out in the market at the beginning of last month. Every model now includes a drain pump, rinse booster pump and chemical pump, all cabinets and doors are double-skinned, and each is fitted with a colour coded display.

.
.
.
.
The repositioning of key internal components in both models is designed to make servicing and maintenance even quicker, while operators and service technicians can now access machine data through an app.

.
.
.
.
Although it has its business roots firmly planted in Stafford, UK, where manufacturing takes place, the company retains an increasingly global outlook.

.
.
.
.
Accounts from its most recent financial year show that almost 45% of its £24.5m turnover came from sales outside of the UK.

.
.
.
.
Expanding the business and the supply of machines worldwide is not without challenges, as Salter acknowledges: “Thinking globally, we have to recognise that technical expertise can vary greatly, and training engineers may not always be easy. This is where our simplicity ethos really comes into its own.

.
.
.
.
“Our machines are designed to be simple inside and out, for both the operator and engineer, meaning our focus and commitment had to be on improving the usability and accessibility of our machines.

.
.
.
.
“We want our machines to deliver not only the best results but also the best experience. That meant removing all barriers to a wonderfully simple experience with the machine. Whether that’s installation, service, and maintenance, or everyday use, the simplicity of the new undercounter range fulfils that. If someone (with minimal training) can install and use the machine, that means we can expand into new markets more organically.”

.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
Salter insists the emphasis on improving the functionality while increasing the simplicity holds the key to its future success, particularly overseas.

.
.
.
.
“With over 47 years of supplying the UK market behind us and the experience of working with a great network of distributors, we feel we can take these learnings and increase our international sales significantly in the next three to five years with the improvements we’ve made.”

.
.
.
.
Prior to the new units being made available in the market, ran trials with customers domestically and abroad in order to gather feedback.

.
.
.
.
“We wanted to know if the product was reliable and simple to use, of course. But essentially, were the results better? This is ultimately something we cannot afford to lose sight of.

.
.
.
.
“The sole purpose of our equipment is to produce a clean glass and plate; so, what’s the point of improving our systems if we don’t focus on the core intention of the product?

.
.
.
.
“Our trialists were impressed with the results, which they pointed out were markedly better. They also loved the inside of the machine and how well it was designed and put together.

.
.
.
.
“It took us roughly two years from making the decision to improve our range to having the machine ready to launch. This just demonstrates why you cannot afford to rest on your laurels.”

.
.
.
.
Salter says the range has also received a positive response from distributors, vindicating its decision to reconfigure the offer.

.
.
.
.
He hopes partners feel well-supported when it comes to marketing and technical assets. “I know training teams on a new product and updating websites and sales material is all extra work. I appreciate all that work; it shows a great commitment to Classeq from our partners. It’s our strong partnerships that make Classeq such a success.”

.
.
.
.
With end-user customers becoming savvier with their spending, and more selective about what their site needs, it is not lost on Salter that factors such as price, environmental impact, usability, longevity and reliability all have a part to play in influencing brand choice.

.
.
.
.
“This is part of what really drove the development of the new range. Restaurant groups who may not have considered Classeq before now are,” he says.

.
.
.
.
“Our research and development never stops, there’s always more than one project running in parallel, and with the new undercounter range now launched, rest assured that another project will come to the forefront.

.
.
.
.
“It’s important that we continue to look forward and stay ahead. Our ongoing goal is to create a machine that is so coveted that our end-users come to our distributors asking for a Classeq. They know the quality of the machine, the quality of the company, and how easy we are to work with.”

.
.
A total of 32 companies have joined the Ceda community since last the middle of last year, comprising 18 new members, seven associate members and seven silver partners.

.
.
.
.
In addition, three silver partners have upgraded their membership to become Platinum Partners.

.
.
.
.
Ceda has widened its circle to include more consultants, software suppliers and equipment suppliers, and said it would continue to try and identify other businesses that can add value to the group.

.
.
.
.
Steve Hemsil, community development manager at Ceda, stressed that the increase in membership levels did not signify a relaxation of its entry criteria, insisting all new-comers have still had to meet the highest standards set out by the association.

.
.
.
.
“Since the 2023 conference we have looked to add companies into the Ceda community that provide our members with a more diverse knowledge base,” he said.

.
.
.
.
“That provides greater opportunities for everyone associated with Ceda to connect, as well as building on Ceda’s reputation of providing our members with support, knowledge and a competitive edge.

.
.
.
.
“This is a strategy that will continue throughout 2024 while ensuring the high standards and values of everyone associated with Ceda are maintained.”

.
.
.
.
Ceda’s annual conference takes place in June at St George’s Park in Burton upon Trent.

.
Lockhart Catering Equipment has launched a fully comprehensive modular food display range aimed at elevating buffet operations.

.
.
.
.
The new Podium range encompasses catering display trolleys – with or without drop leaves for maximising space with minimal storage constraints – and customisable inserts including trays, box risers, bread bins and tea chests.

.
.
.
.
Manufactured in the UK and made from sustainable FSC certified European prime oak, the series is available in natural wood, rich brown, grey and black.

.
.
.
.
Operators can mix and match to create unique configurations specific to their requirements, while shelves on the trolleys can be adjusted with a simple realignment of a screw via Allen key, to subtly tilt forward.

.
.
.
.
The trolleys are equipped with breakable swivel castors for easy movement, allowing users to conveniently load the trolleys in kitchens before wheeling them into the main function for guests to enjoy.

.
.
.
.
Detachable inserts such as bread bins can be easily removed so staff can return to the kitchen for refills without disrupting the whole buffet, before being slotted neatly back into place. This also enables easier cleaning after service for improved hygiene.

.
.
.
.
Simon Britten, head of marketing at Lockhart Catering Equipment, said the range is all about providing flexibility for caterers.

.
.
.
.
“Whether it’s used in office board rooms, conference centres, spas, restaurants, hotel bars or room service, Podium’s versatile products make it easy for operators to create attractive displays that are customised to suit the style of food served,” he commented.

.
.
.
.
Meanwhile, the company has also hailed the success of a recent Foodbuy & Compass Group Innovation Day that it organised at the Business Design Centre (BDC) in Islington.

.
.
.
.
The event gave all suppliers who have permanent showrooms within the BDC an opportunity to present their latest innovations and sustainability credentials to invited senior culinary and brand personnel from the Foodbuy & Compass Group.

.
.
.
.
Each visitor was given a guided tour of the showrooms and details on the latest products and innovations from suppliers.

.
.
.
.
Gemma Bowen, national account manager at Lockhart, said: “We have a very close relationship with Foodbuy & Compass Group and to have over 100 invited guests register for this one-day event is fantastic.

.
.
.
.
“We are indebted to our wonderful suppliers for putting on such an interesting range of talks and insights, as well as to Foodbuy & Compass Group for allowing such a high level of personnel to attend on the day.”

.
Bunzl’s proposed £339m all-cash takeover of Nisbets has received clearance from the UK’s competition watchdog.

.
.
.
.
The distribution and services giant announced its plans to acquire an 80% stake in the Bristol-based catering equipment provider on 26 February, with the deal subject to regulatory approval.

.
.
.
.
Earlier today it confirmed the deal has been given the green light after the Competition & Markets Authority (CMA) confirmed in a response to a briefing paper that it has no further questions on the transaction.

.
.
.
.
Senior officials from both Nisbets and Bunzl had indicated to Catering Insight in recent weeks that they did not expect the deal to hit any regulatory hurdles, but were unsure how quickly the deal would be waved through.

.
.
.
.
Despite the scale of both Nisbets and Lockhart – the catering equipment supply business already owned by Bunzl – sources were confident that the fragmented nature of the catering supply market and clear differences in terms of customer base would prevent any opposition from the CMA.

.
.
.
.
Nisbets remains inherently strong in the local and regional hospitality markets, while Lockhart’s strengths lie in sectors such as contract catering and chain accounts.

.
.
.
.
One quirk of the deal is that it will pitch together two of the largest kitchen houses in the UK under the same ownership as Space Group is currently part of Nisbets while Aggora is owned by Bunzl.

.
.
.
.
In theory that collectively creates a combined project and service operation with revenues in excess of £60m by Catering Insight estimates, a figure that edges it significantly closer to the Airedale Group, the largest player in the UK market.

.
.
.
.
While the deal has been cleared in the UK, Bunzl noted that it is still waiting approval from the Irish competition authority, however that is expected to come before the end of June.

.
.

.
The FEA has launched a new industry accreditation to help businesses develop a deeper understanding of carbon reduction, sustainability and cost-saving methods. Here’s what you need to know…

.
.
.
.
We have to do something about climate change. That’s why FEA has launched a new training initiative that gives participants the skills, knowledge and expertise required to address the current energy challenges and demands for improved sustainability.

.
.
.
.
The Foodservice Carbon Professional (FCP) course was developed by FEA in association with Hospitality Energy Saving. FCP aims to provide the entire foodservice industry, from operators to dealers, designers and manufacturers, with the skills, knowledge and expertise required to address the current energy challenges and demands for improved sustainability.

.
.
.
.
For the supply chain, it gives the knowledge they need to advise their customers confidently.

.
.
.
.
Background

.
.
.
.
Man-made climate change is the most important issue facing the world right now. It’s a complex subject, not just taking into consideration the science behind it, but also the changes that society will be required in order to mitigate the effects.

.
.
.
.
Understanding how relatively simple changes can cause significant improvements in reducing energy consumption, for example in terms of how foodservice equipment is selected and operated, will be a key part of how the industry takes action, particularly as hospitality makes up a significant percentage of the energy used in the UK.

.
.
.
.
“The hospitality industry consumes over 54 terawatt hours each year,” says Paul Anderson, chair of FEA. “This works out to 14% of the UK’s service sector energy use – equivalent to 14 million houses – and is more than the amount that the agricultural and food retail sectors use combined. Finding ways to lower this consumption is vital to the government’s plans to meet Net Zero targets.”

.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
The UK’s food industry as a whole produces 35% of the country’s carbon emissions every year. As part of the effort to prevent global temperatures from rising further, the UK’s foodservice industry is targeted to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2050.

.
.
.
.
In 2019, carbon emissions from the foodservice industry were recorded at 48.75kg per capita per year. To bring in the required reductions will undoubtedly be challenging, but it is possible. Embracing new technology as it comes onto the market will be a major element of the effort, but of course the emergence of improved equipment does increase the complexity of choosing the right gear.

.
.
.
.
More sustainable choices

.
.
.
.
Every year there are more and more new developments that promise improvements in foodservice equipment. Having the information to accurately evaluate new equipment and understand the benefits it can bring in terms of carbon footprint reduction and improving sustainability is going to be important through all sectors of the foodservice and foodservice equipment sectors.

.
.
.
.
Dealers, suppliers and manufacturers have already taken steps to improve their knowledge of these issues but until now it has been difficult to be sure that the information is accurate.

.
.
.
.
The FCP course gives participants a grounding in the science of climate change, what the government is trying to do about it through legislation, how this applies to the foodservice sector and how equipment can play a significant role in improving sustainability.

.
.
.
.
They will also learn how to specify, operate, monitor and maintain equipment to minimise environmental impact throughout its working life. FCP is built around a core module, with additional modules tailored to specific categories like refrigeration, cooking equipment and warewashing.

.
.
.
.
More modules are being developed that will allow the course to be precisely tailored to all parts of the foodservice equipment industry, with modules on ventilation, food waste, FOG and beverage equipment due to be launched soon.

.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
Understanding the bigger picture

.
.
.
.
“Giving the foodservice equipment supply chain the knowledge to address the challenges the hospitality industry is facing, in terms of energy usage and the demand for improved sustainability, will allow them to provide relevant information to customers on all the equipment types they rely on,” says Anderson.

.
.
.
.
“The FCP course’s holistic approach will help them understand the bigger picture, in terms of the whole kitchen operation, and provide practical advice and solutions. The next 16 years are going to be a period of profound transformation, not just for the foodservice equipment industry, but the UK and global economy as a whole.

.
.
.
.
“We all need to take action now. Educating the industry about the importance of identifying and using sustainable equipment and being able to evaluate the potential of new technology as it is brought to market will be a vital piece of the puzzle if we are to meet these targets.”

.
.
.
.
The FCP course is delivered via FEA Academy, the association’s learning management system. It consists of a range of online modules, using a combination of resources that can be completed at the student’s own pace. There are also webinar tutorials, then a final exam students must pass before being awarded Foodservice Carbon Professional status.

.
.
.

.
HCE has shared details of its involvement in a project to transform the catering kitchens at Fareham College.

.
.
.
.
As part of the South Hampshire College Group, the venue accommodates students aged 16 to 19, with approximately 1,500 students in each academic year.

.
.
.
.
With a number of thriving hospitality and catering courses, Fareham College has a main training kitchen which serves the on-site Avenue 141 restaurant, as well as a skills kitchen with individual cook stations for practical exercises.

.
.
.
.
With rising student numbers and increasingly outdated equipment, Stephanie Couper, faculty director for hospitality and travel, knew it was time for the kitchens to be refurbished.

.
.
.
.
She said: “Our training kitchens were not quite fit for purpose – they were becoming dated, and we wanted to improve the facilities we have at Fareham College to give students a more contemporary industry experience. Using the latest equipment means we can provide a service that is comparable to what they will get working in a restaurant kitchen.”

.
.
.
.
Mike Bridger, project sales manager at HCE, says the design process the company went through involved talking to the lecturing staff to see what their requirements were. In addition, there were a number of people in the M&E-related industry and county architects that were involved, meaning initial Teams meetings often included up to 15 people.

.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
The project had a tight time schedule, with HCE needing to complete it during the summer holidays in time for the new academic year.

.
.
.
.
It had to ensure the flow of the kitchen was suitable to maximise the space the college had and make sure that all the workstations were suitable for a learning environment, while also tackling the key technical considerations around areas such as extraction.

.
.
.
.
Mr Bridger said: “The ventilation system was very complex and with both kitchens having separate workings and controls it was something that we had to be aware of. On this particular project we also supplied all the duct works and the fans and the controllers which were actually put on the exterior of the building on a steel framework.

.
.
.
.
“Fire suppression is an element that is really required when there’s a risk involved, and we tend to put these in in virtually every project that has gas equipment. We also had to maintain some gas here because there wasn’t enough electricity output, even with equipment optimised to work on lower power. ”

.
.
.
.
He added: “It’s fabulous to see the end result. It’s been a team collaboration from the design to installation and it is great to see the finished result.”

.
A corporate caterer that specialises in dispensing meals from ‘smart fridges’ has formed a partnership aimed at eliminating unavoidable food waste generated across its national operations.

.
.
.
.
Foodles said it has partnered with ReFood in a move that will see surplus meals collected from its smart fridges across London and sent to a state-of-the-art anaerobic digestion (AD) facility in Dagenham, where it will be used to generate both renewable energy and biofertiliser.

.
.
.
.
As a fast-growing company with a rising need for sustainable waste management, Foodles said the partnership would unlock new circular solutions which both benefit the environment and have the ability to scale as it expands.

.
.
.
.
The business was founded in 2014 and has pioneered what it calls “a revolutionary approach to tackle mundane corporate catering”.

.
.
.
.
Rather than running a canteen, the business delivers fresh, healthy meals on a daily basis, which are stored in next-generation smart fridges and dispensed to customers much like a vending machine.

.
.
.
.
The concept was originally launched in France, but has since expanded further across Europe – first into Belgium in 2020, before entering the UK in 2022.

.
.
.
.
Every year, the business delivers more than one million pre-prepared meals, with hundreds of smart fridges operational across the continent.

.
.
.
.
Michaël Ormancey, co-founder and co-CEO of Foodles, said: “Since setting up our services in London, we’ve seen a variety of companies sign up to receive daily deliveries. We aim to offer complete flexibility to both employers and employees – in essence, we’ve re-imagined the lunch break.

.
.
.
.
“However, while our cutting-edge approach is far more sustainable than the old-fashioned corporate catering model, uneaten meals must be dealt with responsibly. Our partnership with ReFood will enable us to continue to grow with this sustainable, scalable solution.”

.
.
.
.
As well as Dagenham, ReFood has sites in Doncaster and Widnes. Every year, it handles 480,000 tonnes of waste, using it to generate renewable energy and sustainable biofertiliser.
