classic paper masking technique. I guess I just love the way I can overlay colors and play with fun patterns.
2.
3.
4.
5. These first few designs are inspired by late 60's early 70's Vintage psychedelia. Bold vibrant colors with an Op Art designs cause me to recall some decadent vintage fabric finds.
6.
7.
8. Vibrant Vintage
9.
10.
11. Bold contemporary flare
12.
13. I also threw some Boho style patterns in there too. Like this classic lantern pattern with a forced perspective twist.
14.
15.
16. Lantern swirls
17.
18.
19. Boho chic
20.
21. I loved working with the bold clean lines of this chic arrow pattern.
22.
23.
25. ----Workshops----
26.
27. I will be hosting a silk marbling workshop at The Loaded Brush on May 13th.
34.
35. I would just like to catch up on what I had been up to for the last bit of 2017. I've been quite productive.
36.
37. I had the privilege to make a series of collaborative works with the artist Chelsea Rose(aka: @LucidRose). We made a total of ten pieces on wood panel. Each piece was marbled first, Then Chelsea adorned the ebru art with an original painting of a creature or scene from the world of Lucid Rose
38.
39.
40. Joint Efforts
41.
42. We created the ten pieces for the 10th Annual Portland Big 500 Art Show. The Big 500 is a neat show that happens every December. It has 500 local artists contribute art for a massive display that spans three different neighboring galleries.
43.
44.
45. First come, first serve
46.
47. The whole show is "cash & carry". Meaning if you want a piece just pull it off the wall and pay for it then take it with you. This first come style creates quite the commotion.
48.
49. I also held a Silk Marbling workshop at The Loaded Brush in Portland.
50.
51.
52. Another successful Ebru workshop
53.
54. Its been a while since holding a silk workshop. I had a blast and we all had some great marbled results. So, I decided to hold another silk marbling workshop this Spring.
55.
56. ----Workshops----
57.
58. I will be hosting a silk marbling workshop at The Loaded Brush on February 11th.
59.
60. Thats all for now!
61. Are you interested in commissioning custom art or booking an ebru art lesson, workshop, demo, party, or performance? Contact me at art@dannyebru.com
62.
63. Peace & Love,
I put together a medley of patterns to be cut up and used like a stencil to make layers in the marbling.
65.
66. The designs were mostly patterns built from simple geometric shapes.
67.
68.
69. A cosmic circle mandala
70.
71. I really like the circles. I don't use black to often in my work, but in this case it wouldn't be the same without it.
72.
73.
74. Concentric perspective
75.
76. Forcing the perspective a bit really makes it feel like the pattern continues beyond the frame.
77.
78.
79. It keeps going... and going
80.
The goal this time was to create a beautiful goddess. The Hindu Goddess Lakshmi to be precise.
109.
110.
111. A sign of auspicious fortune!
112.
113. The Goddess Lakshmi represents luck, wealth, and beauty. People look to Lakshmi to lead them to both material and spiritual prosperity.
114.
115.
116.
117.
118. After making the screen print and ebru mixed media pieces I grabbed my stencils and spray paint and made some mixed media pieces of a different variety. I have been enjoying finding ways to include the new transparent spray paints into my art. Since Lakshmi is associated with wealth and gold I used my transparent yellow paint to enhance the design.
119.
When I'm done with a piece I scan it, and I'll frame it. Then if I want to get any photos of a piece after it is framed I'll have to shoot it from an angle to avoid reflections and glare from the glass. It is those angled photos that inspired these tilted perspective honeycomb designs.
A few of them even dragged me out of my marbling studio.
188.
189. I'm really excited to share the public art installation I did in the Alberta Art District of Portland.
190.
191.
192. Marbled monolith
193.
194. I was commissioned by Alberta Art Works to marbleize a working ATM on the corner of Alberta St. and 15th Ave. in Portland, Oregon. I designed a decoupage mosaic gradient concept that would allow me to permanently wrap the machine in handmade marbled paper.
195.
196.
197. Paper patchwork
198.
199. The installation took 10 hours, 1.5 quarts of glue, and over 260 individual pieces of original handmade marbled paper to complete.
200.
201.
202. A closer look
203.
204.
205.
206.
207. 360 coverage
208.
209.
210.
211. But that's not all.
212.
213. I also had a live ebru art performance along side a Turkish music band and a bellydancer.
214.
215.
216. that's three times the Turkish-nes
217.
218. Local Portland band Ritim Egzotik focuses their effort on Turkish and Persian music. We met a little while back and right away knew we would want to do live performances together. Accompanying Ritim Egzotik was a bellydancer named Henna. We got together for an art show that featured art from different religions from around the world.
219.
220.
221.
222. It was my first time working along side live music. It was a ton of fun. I hope we get to work together some more.
223.
224.
225. live ebru
226.
227. But wait, there's more.
228.
229. I also held my annual paper marbling workshop for the Portland Mini Maker Faire at OMSI.
230.
232. DIY
233.
234. It is always fun hosting workshops at the Maker Faire. I get such a diverse group of kids, adults, and seniors. All of them completely fascinated and eager to learn more.
235.
236.
239.
240. With all these projects behind me I'm ready to dive back into my work in the studio. Really looking forward to all that marbling time.
254.
255. If life is a dream, this is the dreamer. With eyes closed and the third eye open, in a state of enlightened omnipotents.
256.
257.
258. We are the dream and the dreamers
259.
260. The design is inspired by Sri Shiva. The Mahadev, Shiva is All and is in all. Shiva is the Tantric Revealer of all that is.
261.
262.
263. Har Har Mahadev
264.
265. For this project I decided to do a stencil layer in place of a second screen print layer or second marbling layer. I cut a stencil of the silhouette shape and used to lay down a fill color with spray paint. I would then screen print the design on top of the painted silhouette.
266.
267. While working on this project I discovered the new Montana 94 transparent spray paint colors. I really like the way they look, and I love that I don't lose the marbling behind the design.
268.
269.
270. The Revealer
271.
272. Even more images available on my flickr.
 273.
274.
275. In Other News
276.
277. ----Workshops----
278.
279. I will be hosting a small workshop at OMSI on September 11th as part of the Portland Mini Maker Faire.
My normal dimensions for masking projects is 8"x 10" or 11"x 14". I have been working in those sizes for years, but the urge to go bigger was ever present. So, I started cutting some big masks, and started a dynamic collection of large ebru art originals.
288.
289. The dimensions I'm working with now is 18"x 24". I used to only marble paper this size for my screen print projects. Now I am quite comfortable masking marbled patterns at this size too.
290.
296.
297. Three of the big ebru pieces are mandalas. With two of them being chakra mandala interpretations. Plus a new large Sri Yantra mandala. I intend to make a chakra mandala for each of the primary seven chakras.
298.
307.
308. I'm going to keep working on big pieces. I want to finish up the chakra mandalas, and I have a few patterns in mind for future pieces too.
309.
310. I really liked cutting on a larger scale. However I will still be making the smaller original sizes too. I love how much detail is packed into to the patterns of the smaller sizes.
326.
327. I started by drawing up some images. I then turned the drawings I liked in to designs that I could cut out. Then the cut up designs were used as masking while taking the ebru mono-print. The masking is then removed to reveal the final image.
328.
329.
330. Triple lotus design
331.
332. The Lotus flower is a symbol of perseverance and enlightenment. The Lotus is a flower that rises out of the mud to bring beauty to the world with its presence and harmony to the mind with its essence.
333.
334.
335. The lotus is also associated with beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality, and eternity
336.
337. I also created a design with Shiva's Trishula and a sanskrit Shiva prayer.
338.
339.
340. Om Namah Shivaya
341.
342. You might notice that two of these pieces have a very fine combed pattern. I recently spoiled myself with a new super fine toothed comb. I don't know how I went so long without it.
360.
361. I present Narasimha! One of the avatars of the Hindu deity Vishnu.
362.
363.
364. I'm the avatar, you gotta deal with it.
365.
366. He sits in strength. Containing the ferocity of a lion. With cunning wisdom and patients, he waits to strike down even the most defiant of demons.
367.
368.
369. WIP screen from outlines to hand painted.
370.
371. I choose to hand paint my silkscreens. It is a process that can take a couple weeks to a month to do. This time allows me to really get in touch with the imagery and poor as much energy and intention into the design as I can.
372.
373. I really like the handmade feel. To me it comes across as much more authentic and timeless.
374.
375.
376. He waits to strike down even the most defiant of demons.
377.
378. While the first Narasimha piece had multiple layers of marbling, This one has different techniques added to the process, such as stenciling and a squeegee drag.
379.
380.
381. In Other News
382. I was part of large group art show that happened in Portland. The show, "Burning Season 3", contained a balanced mix of fine art and street art.
383.
384.
385. My Ganesh piece making its first public appearance.
386.
387. Local artist from Portland and artist from California and as far as Texas all came together to present a mind blowing event that included a unique blend of mediums and styles, with 2d and 3d art, body painting, an interactive graffiti art section, and live funk and hip hop music.
388.
389.
390. Stencilled Buddha heads with some good company.
391.
392. All and all it was quite the show, and I can't wait until the next one.
JW Marriott asked me to perform at the grand opening of their new resort in Los Cabos.
398.
399.
400. JW Marriott, Los Cabos, Mexico
401.
402. It was a brand new beachfront resort. There was fancy lighting and live drummers everywhere, while Chelsea Rose and I were doing live marbling on a pair of 8 foot trays for onlookers.
403.
404.
405. I am a warrior of art or something
408. Preshow smiles from Chelsea Rose
414.
415. I also produced an exclusive line of paper for JW Marriott to mark the occasion. The paper was made available to the guests who were invited to the opening.
431.
432. I made all new work to display for both shows. It was a blast working on mediums I don't always work with. The first show required me to work on wood panels for the first time. While the second show demanded vinyl records.
433.
434.
435. Wood panels at the Portland Big 500
436.
437. The Portland Big 500 is an annual group show featuring local artist working on identical wood panels. This show happens every year, but this was my first time participating.
438.
439.
440.
441. I actually really enjoyed working on wood panels. The pieces all came out great. Plus I sold over half the pieces I submitted.
442.
443.
444.
445.
446.
447. I am definitely going to try doing more work on wood in the future. So keep an eye out for them.
448.
449. Next was the vinyl show at Future Shock PDX. This was my second time taking part in the all vinyl record art show. But this year I utilized 45s.
450.
451.
452. marbled and stencilled and on display in Future Shock
453.
454. The 45s were a fun twist on working with vinyl.
455.
456.
457.
458. And so was the clock kit.
459.
460.
461. Unfortunately time slipped right off the wall and broke
462.
463. Some of the un-sold pieces will be available in my etsy shop if you are interested.
I have quite the collection myself.
469.
470. However my collection has grown rather large since I started making ebru art buttons. You see, I recently got a button machine, and I find the process fun. Plus its a great use of my smaller marbled papers. But, well, its gotten out of hand.
471.
472.
473. So many buttons!
474.
475. I do have my favorites. It's amazing how much can fit on a space just bigger than an inch(1.25" to be exact).
476.
477.
478.
479.
480.
481.
482. I told you there are a lot of them
483.
484. Luckily for all the button heads out there, the buttons are available on my etsy shop. 507.
508.
509. The Loaded Brush, Portland, Oregon
510.
511. For the last three months I have done at least one event every three weeks. Thats a lot of seats containing new marblers, both amazed and passionate about their new interest. Honestly, I couldn't be happier to share my passion, especially since its been so well received.
512.
513.
514. ASW's Catalyst Gallery, Orange County, California
515.
516. I went back to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry for my forth year of the Portland Mini Maker Faire. Its fun introducing wee ones to marbling. At times the kids seems to grasp it better than the adults accompanying them.
517.
518.
519. We made prints with the Maker cat printed on them.
520.
521. I do enjoy sharing the technique, but what about the people out of town who can't make it to one of the workshops.
522.
523. Well, I have been thinking about that for a few months. I came to the conclusion to make a booklet as a start. The booklet details supplies, preparation, pattern design, and printing. You can buy the downloadable booklet here, and the printed booklet here.
524.
525. The booklet was just the start though. I have also started making detailed video tutorials. The videos are all available on my Patreon.
526.
527.
528. Here's a sneak peak. Help me make more videos by supporting me on Patreon
529.
530. Now I can share my how-to marbling workshop experience with people all over the world. And more importantly I can share it for a very accessible price. Because the magic of marbling should be for everyone. For as low as $1 a month you will have access to my marbling prep videos, and $5 a month for access to everything else, including marbling pattern, print effects, and more.
531.
532. Come show your support and feed your interest.
Variety is the key to life after all. Got to keep the process fresh and make the most of my work.
547.
548. Laughing Buddha, Hotei, Budai, the Future Buddha. No matter how you know him, he is a pure symbol of contentment and the essence of Zen. However he was always humble, gaining joy from his work and not asking for much more from life.
549.
550.
551. Just for a laugh.
552.
553. I spent a couple weeks painting the design into the screen mesh.
554.
555.
556.
557. Once I had the screen all painted in and ready for printing, I was ready to marble some paper. After a great marbling session I made some test prints of the Laughing buddha. Then I cut out the silhouette of the design from the test prints, and that was how I made the stencil for the color fill on the Laughing Buddha. I used some Montana spray paint to fill in the color. Then lined up my screen and started printing.
558.
559.
560. The big reveal.
561.
Lots and lots of triangles.
582.
583. The fun thing about geometry kicks is all the cool mosaic patterns I can make. I have been using my stencil/masking technique with layers of ebru to create these geo-mosaic patterns.
584.
585.
586. Nothing can beat Triangleman
587.
588.
589. Grandiose trinity
590.
591. Triangles are often associated with creativity, harmony, proportion, manifestation, illumination, and ascension. Plus triangles are inseparable with the number three. Linking triangles to all the great mythos and disciplines of the world.
592.
593.
594. Three is the birthing of true wisdom
613.

 614.

 615.

 616. You see just like there are many different patterns to make in the tray, there are many alterations to the printing process. Many of which create new fascinating looks. Many of the different printing styles are regular features here such as the drag, masking, ripples, layers, spanish waves, and standard printing. The moire has always been on my list of must know techniques.

 617.

 618.
619. As you can see below, I have made great strides toward mastering this style too.
620.
621.
622. There is a bit of 3D illusion to it.
623.
624.
625. There is some depth and dimension to it too.
626.
627. The moire is a fun technique, and its not to far from the ripple and wave printing styles I have such a blast making.
628. Check out these ripple and wave details from recent prints of mine.
629.
630.
631.
632.
633. I like when the ripples are so dramatic they look more like folds.
634.
635.
636.
637.
638.
639. You will definitely see more of these printing styles gracing this blog in the future. I can't get enough of them.
640.
641. In Other News
At the time It was unable to share, but now I have the time to do a recap.
652.
653.
654. Be aware of now.
655.
656. I was actually just finishing this project when the Moen gig started. However this is the first time I am able to talk about it.
657.
658. My intention was to create an image of a monk praying with his Mala(prayer beads) and opening his third eye. But first I had to stretch a screen.
659.
660.
661.
662. Then I started by cleaning up a sketch on the computer. I printed it out then I outlined the image on to the screen I stretched.
663.
664.
665.
666. Painting in the design on the screen took a couple weeks. But before I knew it I was ready to print.
667.
668.
669. Give it a pull.
670.
671. Once again I combined layers of masked marbling with screen printing to achieve my finished look. But this time around I went one step beyond. I used liquid frisket to paint a lotus design that would reveal itself through the layers of marbling without the outline of a screen print to define it. This was my first attempt at utilizing hand painted frisket instead of hand cut paper masks. In the end I am ecstatic with the results.
672.
673.
674. Peace comes from within.
675.
676. Many times I find myself creating small projects to break up the bigger projects. So while I was creating intense amounts of blue paper for Moen I was also knocking out little pieces for local group art shows.
677.
678.
679. Bill Murray Show, at Good Gallery.
680.
681.
682. Bling Show, at Splendaporium Gallery.
683.
684. I even broke new ground by starting to marble old vinyl records. I marbled a small stack of vinyl and painted Mudra hands on a couple of them with acrylic paint.
685.
686.
687. Vinyl Show, at Future Shock.
688.
689. Creating and showing artwork wasn't all I was up to.
690.
691. I also hosted two sold out ebru workshops.
692.
693.
694. Paper Marbling at the Loaded Brush.
695.
696. The first workshop was a paper class. It was a blast as usual.
697.
698. The second workshop was a silk scarf class. I had four full scarf sized trays in operation at this workshop. Thats a lot of liquid size.
699.
700.
701. Silk Marbling at the Loaded Brush.
702.
703.
704. More silk Marbling at the Loaded Brush.
705.
706. So that about sums up my hectic fall/winter. I am just now starting to catch back up with the world. I will be starting new projects soon, and I have a couple more workshops on the horizon.
707.
720.
721.
722. I started talking with Derse, a representative for a potential client, early in the fall. While everyone else was planning Thanksgiving, I was planning the first phase of production for my new gig. I would be doing ebru for faucet and fixture giant, Moen. They wanted live ebru art as well as a hands-on experience in the Moen lounge booth at KBIS(Kitchen, Bath, and Interior Show) for 2015. I was also commissioned to create multiple pieces to be used as display around the Moen lounge booth, the Moen show floor booth, and a special Moen Spa event outside of KBIS. Thats not all. I was also tasked to create an exclusive custom edition of 500 handmade ebru papers for Moen to hand out at KBIS 2015.
723.
724.
725. Using the big tray for a big order.
726.
727. I started by making the display pieces for the Lounge area. I designed and printed pieces on kozo paper(my favorite) to be scanned and reproduced on a larger scale. Then quickly jumped into production of the custom edition papers. Moen requested multiple blues with white in a freestyle pattern printed with a ripple effect.
728.
729.
730. Check.
731.
732. I had to dedicate a whole room to prepping, drying, and cutting paper to fill the order within the deadline. Not only did I skip out on Thanksgiving but I also worked though Christmas while marbling away day after day. I was able to fill the custom edition order, ship it out and move on to the next phase of the project.
733.
734.
735. Custom edition details.
736.
737. The next phase was to create custom original ebru art to display in the Moen show floor booth. I was given a design guide for each section, so I could work within the interior designers vision to create a impressive comprehensive display.
738.
739.
740. The colors really pop off all that black.
741.
742.
743. The curve in the swirled ebru kinda reflects the curve in the faucet.
744.
745. With all the custom orders filled I turned my full attention to the show. I still had to prepare everything so I could travel to Las Vegas and not only perform for the two million people roaming around the convention floors that week but also host a hands-on demo for thousands of curious/adventurous/artsy people too. So I boxed up a good portion of my ebru art studio and workshop supplies then shipped it to Las Vegas in preparation for the show.
746.
747.
748. Moen lounge booth
749.
750. As you can see the Moen lounge booth was quite large. In the center was my workstation where I did all my performance work. We had a camera capturing everything I did and displaying it live on a monitor over my head. I produced 8-10 big paper pieces a day during my performances. The pieces I created were then won as prizes in a social media sweepstakes held during KBIS 2015 by Moen.
751.
752.
753. Moen lounge performance.
754.
755.
756. stirring things up for convention goers.
757.
758. Their was a style guide controlling the colors I used, but I use the chosen colors a lot anyways so it was still fun and natural. I made some pretty nice pieces during my live performances.
759.
760.
761. Live art.
762.
763.
764. Live art dripping on my arm.
765.
766. As I mentioned before, there was also a hands-on demo for the artsy and adventurous convention goer. We had eight smaller trays for the hands-on demo set up on the left side of the Moen lounge booth. The demo area was being run by a trained crew of four that I brought with me to the convention so I could focus on my performances. People were invited to put on an apron to protect their clothes and were shown how to make there own little ebru paper to take home(or take to the office I guess).
767.
768.
769. The lovely Chelsea Rose at the hands-on demo station.
770.
771. Over on the right side of the booth we had treats. There was infused fruit water and gourmet marbled chocolates to enjoy while catching a live ebru show or waiting for their own papers to dry.
772.
773.
774. Packaged and ready to go! Plus Marbled chocolate!!
775.
776. The show was a great success. I made some amazing ebru pieces. We handed out all my postcards. People all over the KBIS 2015 convention were buzzing about Ebru. And we saw plenty of repeat visitors.
777.
778. Big thanks to Moen, Derse, and my Las Vegas crew for helping make it all possible.
779.
780. Hard to believe I spent three months on the Moen Project. But thats not all I was up to. I also held two sold out workshops, and participated in three different group art shows around Portland. I will be talking about all those events in a separate blog entry.
781.
783. ----Workshops----
784.
785. I have my second paper marbling workshop at the Spark Arts Center in NE Portland, Oregon. Coming up on February 13th 7-9pm. We will be hand marbling paper to the theme of Valintines Day while enjoying sips of wine.
786. *sign-up for workshops in advance.
This year seems to follow suit.
 792.
793.
794. I started the month with an instal at the 77 Salon in the Pearl Art District of Portland, Oregon. My Ebru art will be there for the Month of September. I also helped Chelsea Rose hang her solo art show at Future Shock. We decided to displayed all her collaborative art pieces too, including the piece she made with me.
795.
796.
797. Our piece is in the middle, "Wormhole".
798.
799. Once I was done with hanging art around town I switched focus to workshops.
800.
801. I hosted an advanced ebru workshop for a small group of Oregon based paper marblers. I passed on techniques like the Spanish wave, the ripple, and the drag, along with some other tricks that I favor when in the studio.
802.
803.
804. Fresh papers drying on the line.
805.
806.
807. The group hard at work.
808.
809.
810. Contemplating the possibilities.
811.
812. The advanced class was fun, but the fun was just beginning, because a couple days later I held a workshop at OMSI(Oregon Museum of Science and Industry) during the 2014 Mini Maker Faire. The Mini Maker Faire brings in kids of all ages to get hands-on with all sorts of DIY projects. I enjoyed introducing paper marbling to some of the Mini DIY enthusiast.
813.
814.
815. Started the workshop with a group demo
816.
817.
818. Then I let the kids play.
819.
820.
821. Helping the little ones.
822.
823.
824. Dapper Maker cat 2014.
825.
826. While at the Mini Maker Faire I was visited by Oregon's Marbling bigwig, Peggy Skycraft. We had fun talking shop and comparing methods. Maybe we will get together and do a project in the future.
827.
828.
829. Marblers unite.
830.
831. I still have one more workshop to go this month. Next week I will be teaching at the Loaded Brush. We will be marbling silk scarves on September 21st, 2-5pm. We made a short video mash-up of me doing some ebru designs at the Loaded Brush to help entice people into giving this ancient artform a try.
832.
833.
849. I'm having far too much fun in the process.
850.
851.
852. A vibrant bold triple spiral.
853.
854.
855. Doubling up to the hexagonal spiral.
856.
857. Playing with spirals isn't all fun. The hard part is making all the spirals look unique, not repetitive. Color and design go along way to add distinction among the spirals.
858.
859.
860. A hint of 3D in this one.
861.
862.
863. Down the rabbit hole we go!
864.
865. As you can tell, I still jump at the chance to create optical illusions. Nothing is what it seems. Trust not your eyes.
866.
867.
868. The rainbow bridge, Antahkarana.
869.
870. No spiral collection is complete without an illustration of the Golden Ratio. Known as the Golden spiral, or fibonacci numbers, my rendition leans more toward an abstract image, but keeps true to the 1/1.61 sequence.
871.
872.
873. Mystic golden spiral.
874.
875. ----Workshops----
876.
877. I will be hosting an all ages workshop at the OMSI Maker Faire this September 14th at OMSI in SE Portland, Oregon. We will be hand marbling paper and bookmarks.
But I finally have a moment to share what I have been up to.
888.
889. In May I had an awesome group of people in my marbling workshop at the Loaded Brush. Everyone in the group picked up the technique quite quick and started turning out some great pieces.
890.
891.
892.
893.
894.
895.
896.
897.
898.
899. I have been doing some vending whenever I can. With Summer finally showing up I was able to get out to the Last Thursday Artwalk on Alberta in Northern Portland's Alberta Arts District. Since the art walk is in danger of mayoral disruptions, I chose to do a minimal display. I managed to do pretty well despite the small set-up and looming police presence.
900.
901.
902.
903. I have also been doing the big art and craft market around town, the Portland Saturday Market. Don't let the name fool you, I only sell at the market on Sundays.
904.
905.
906.
907.
908.
909.
910.
911. I also recently released a new ebru video onto youtube. The camera is underneath the tray shooting up through the liquid size. I demo the first two base patterns of ebru and follow that up with a bit of a freestyle pattern.
912.
913.
914.
915. On the 21st of June I will be hosting a live demo at the Lake Oswego Festival of Arts. Stop by and check out all the different artist Oregon has to offer, and don't forget to swing by and say hi.
916.
917. Are you interested in booking an ebru workshop, demo, party, or performance? Contact me at art@dannyebru.com
921.
922. What started as an offering to do commissioned portraits for my patrons turned into a small but awesome pop art ebru series.
923.
924.
925. "Lately things just don't seem the same."
926.
927. The portraits are made from a single uncut piece of paper. I implemented the use of paper masks, a.k.a. stencils, to define the shapes of each portrait. Each color and pattern used bring a unique new life to the highly recognizable classic pop images. Each finished piece in this small series has two vibrant layers of original ebru.
928.
929.
930. Using the light table to aline the stencil.
931.
932. Jimi Hendrix(the visionary), Jim Morrison(the poet), and Bob Marley(the heart), the subjects of my pop art ebru series are all musicians I grew up listening to and reading about. Their music and lives have a strong influence on who I am today. So in a way these are portraits of my inspirations.
933.
934.
935. "Strange times have found us."
936.
937.
938. "Live the life you love."
939.
940. You can collect all three pop ebru images from my etsy shop! I have archival prints available at a great price.
941.
942. -----In Other News-----
943.
944. I recently took a trip over to the M. Graham paint companies manufacturing warehouse. M. Graham is one of the paints I use the most to create my ebru art. It was interesting learning and watching how paint is made. Especially since it is such a important part of my art.
963.
964. The Tea Zone is an awesome little tea house located in the heart of downtown Portland's art district, The Pearl.
965.
967. Hanging at the tea house.
968.
969. The selection of work I am showing at the Tea Zone is a combination of Eastern symbolism and abstract expression pieces that I have created over the last three years.
970.
971.
975. Back room of the tea shop.
976.
977. The back room of the tea shop is also known as the Camellia Lounge. This sweet ambient tea house transforms into Portland's premier Jazz bar in the evenings.
978.
981.
982. So if you are picking up art supplies, or just enjoying the bustle of downtown, take a minute to pop in to the Tea Zone and peep my work up close.
989.
990. The Pacifica Institute invited me to perform my ebru art at their annual Oregon Legislative dinner. I put together a 15 minute set of traditional ebru imagery and patterns for the members of the Oregon Legislators to enjoy.
991.
