In fact, there&#39;s a variety of new electric cars offered by a number of car makers. From the domestic American made Chevrolet Volt to the Japanese Nissan Leaf, these new models of electric cars are going to change the way we drive.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The EVs, as they are called, will require an electric charging station. Think of it as a gas station right in your own garage. Better yet, EV charging stations will soon begin appearing all over the nation. Any commercial parking area today will have the option to install EV charging stations for the convenience of their EV driving customers. The dealerships will also need charging stations to demonstrate the new electric vehicles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So, which EV charger is the right charger for your home? You do have a choice. There is the 120 volt charging system that can plug right into any household wall socket, preferably in your garage. This charger can fully charge your EV in 10-14 hours. This standard charging system comes standard with all of the new Electric Vehicles.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;How would you like to have to stand at a gas pump for 10 hours pumping gas? Obviously, you&#39;re going to have to plan your driving habits. Your EV will have to be parked at least 10 hours per day, most likely while you sleep.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What if you could fully charge your EV in 4 hours? What would that be worth to you? Let&#39;s face it; these cars aren&#39;t cheap to begin with! To fully charge your EV in 4 hours, you&#39;ll need a level 2, 240 volt rapid electric vehicle charging station rated at 20 amps. These are available from the EV manufacturers as well as from a number of 3rd party providers.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In order to install a 240 volt level 2 rapid charger in your garage, you&#39;ll need a licensed electrician or electrical contractor. Both the Nissan LEAF and the Chevrolet VOLT require the use of one of their own certified electrical contractors&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href=&quot;http://xovacharging.com/&quot;&gt;http://xovacharging.com/&lt;/a&gt;. Soon you may be able to hire your own electrical contractor if you sign a waiver, however initially the electric vehicle car manufacturers want you to use their certified installers who have been trained to their specifications. The electrician will need to install a 240 volt electrical outlet in your garage and also to install the charger on the wall near the outlet.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So what&#39;s involved if you decide to purchase the optional 240 volt, 4 hour charger?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;First you will need to purchase the rapid charging station either from the electric car dealership or from a 3rd party provider (if allowed). Then you will need to hire either the dealers electrical contractor of one of your choosing.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The electrician will need to acquire a double pole, or 240 volt circuit from your electrical panel. This means that there must be space in your panel to accommodate 2 additional circuit breakers. A 240 volt circuit breaker is commonly referred to as a double pole breaker. If there isn&#39;t any room for additional circuit breakers, sometimes the existing breakers can be replaced with tandem breakers. Tandem breakers are 1/2 the size of a standard breaker. Two of them will fit in the space designed for one full size breaker. By doing this, it&#39;s possible to create enough space for a new double pole circuit breaker. Once that is established, a 240 volt copper wire, size 8 gauge, is installed from the panel to the garage to carry the power required for your 240 volt EV charger. Eight gauge wire is recommended by the manufacturer. The manufacturer also recommends installing a sub-circuit panel in the garage for the charger, but I do not believe that is absolutely necessary.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So how does the electrician get the 240 volt circuit wire from the panel to the garage? Often times, the panel is a combination circuit breaker panel and electric meter box all in one. In a perfect world, this box will often be found on an exterior garage wall. However, it can also be located on the opposite side of the house! If the panel is on a garage wall, the installation is much easier and less costly. The closer the circuit panel, the less time and material it will require. If it&#39;s not on a garage wall and is located further away, then creative measures may be necessary.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If your house has a crawl space either above or below, that&#39;s the best case scenario. In that case, a short section of electrical conduit will be installed out of the bottom or top of the panel and turn into the crawl space to carry the wire across to the garage. Worst case scenario, is when there is no access above or below the house. These are the most challenging.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;You will want to hire an experienced electrician that takes a great deal of pride in his workmanship. The electrician will be required to install electrical conduit from the panel to the garage. Exterior wiring of 120 volts or higher must be protected inside electrical conduit, either metal or PVC. Usually the conduit will be fastened to the exterior of your home. Sometimes, to avoid what some may call an unsightly addition to the exterior, the conduit may be buried in the ground.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I have installed miles and miles of electrical conduit on the exterior of people&#39;s homes over the years. If your electrician is proficient at bending and installing metal or PVC conduit, then he can do a good job without detracting from the appearance of your home. Knowing how to properly bend electrical metal tubing (EMT) has become a lost art among many of the younger residential electricians.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you plan to install a 240 volt rapid charger in your garage for your EV, and you will be required to run electrical conduit on the exterior of your home, then you&#39;ll want a conduit expert in order to get a nice, neat job. Conduit can be painted, but a neat installation is critical. Bad conduit installations can really &quot;ugly up&quot; a house. Not all electricians are skilled at conduit bending. It takes a lot of practice. Many handymen and even some less reputable electricians will simply staple plastic jacketed cable (Romex) right to the exterior of the house. It serves the purpose, but it&#39;s not legal. All exterior 120 volt wiring or higher must be inside electrical conduit. This is also the rule when running exposed AC wire on a surface wall indoors as well.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you can live with a 10 hour charge time, then you won&#39;t need to spend any additional money for a level 2 rapid charging station. If you wish to fully charge your EV in 4 hours, prepare to spend a little more money. I think things will evolve as time goes by and maybe the charging systems will become more efficient and less charging time will be required. What is it that pharmacy technicians do in a pharmacy. Most people figure they help the pharmacist enter prescriptions and count pills. This is true for an outpatient pharmacy, also called a retail pharmacy, but there are many roles for pharmacy techs in healthcare&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href=&quot;http://sourcing-force.com&quot;&gt;sourcing-force.com&lt;/a&gt;. The rest of this article will discuss the job description of pharmacy techs in a retail or community setting, and provide a bulleted list of tasks. Future articles will cover different pharmacy settings for pharmacy techs and the job descriptions and tasks associated with them as well.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Community/Retail Pharmacy: I have worked retail, and I prefer other settings; however, it is where a large percentage of pharmacy technician jobs are found. What a pharmacy technician can do is determined by the state they work via state laws and rules. In general, technicians cannot provide clinical information to patients or be the final check for prescriptions. In some states, technicians are allowed to provide information on over-the-counter (OTC) medication (ie, medications that do not require a prescription, such as, acetaminophen and ibuprofen). Specific roles that pharmacy technicians can have in a retail pharmacy include: general technician, lead technician, buying technician, compounding technician, and billing/insurance technician. In most pharmacies, pharmacy technicians are general technicians with some of the above listed skill sets. When you go into a larger and busier pharmacy, you can actually have job differentiation where people have assigned specialized tasks (based on the needs of the pharmacy).&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Pharmacy technician tasks for retail pharmacies include, but are not limited to:&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Collecting patient information (insurance and personal information as needed)&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Entering and processing prescriptions in the computer system&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Filling and selling prescriptions&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Requesting refills from doctor offices for patients&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Compounding medications that are not commercially available&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Ordering medications&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Restocking shelves&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Answering the phone&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Working with insurance companies on approving payment for certain medications&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Maintaining the cash register and conducting accounting functions&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Retail pharmacies tend to get a bad rap from within the pharmacy profession. Although I prefer hospital (which will be the topic of the next article), I enjoyed my time in a retail pharmacy. I was able to get to know the customers (I like say patients) personally. It is a great feeling when a long-time customer comes to the pharmacy and you know them by name, maybe a little about their family, and most important you know their medical history. Because of this relationship, you are able to ensure that the patient&#39;s medication regimen is optimal, as a technician you can help determine if there are generic alternatives to medications prescribed in order to help the patient save money.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In summary, retail pharmacies are the most common type of pharmacy, and therefore the place where the majority of pharmacy techs are employed. Due to an increasing elderly population (thank you baby boomers), retail pharmacies will continue to increase in demand. If you find a pleasant retail pharmacy to work in, and good staff to work with, a retail pharmacy technician position can be a positive experience.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Rob Hoopi is a hospital pharmacy manager at a large community hospital. Formal pharmacy technician education programs require some classroom and laboratory work in a variety of areas, including medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy recordkeeping, pharmaceutical techniques, and pharmacy law and ethics. Technicians also are required to learn medication names, actions, uses, and doses. Many training programs include internships, in which students gain hands-on experience in actual pharmacies.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;How to be a good pharmacy Technician? What kind of criteria do one need to be a good pharmacy technician?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;1. Prospective pharmacy technicians gain their working experience as an aide in a community pharmacy or volunteering in a hospital before the actual employment. Applicants with mass experience managing medicine inventories, counting tablets, measuring dosages, and using computers as much as skillful in most of the clerical work is definitely an added bonus&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;2. To learn and grasp the knowledge of pharmacy technician&#39;s fast, a background in chemistry, English, Biology, Chemistry and Health education of any type may be beneficial.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;3. Gain the certification and other qualifications. Both the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board and the Institute for the Certification of Pharmacy Technicians, administer national certification examinations. To be eligible for either exam, candidates must have a high school diploma or GED, no felony convictions of any kind within 3-5 years of applying, and no drug or pharmacy related felony convictions history before. Employers, often pharmacists, know that individuals who pass the exam have a standardized body of knowledge and skills.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;4. One should get recertified every 2 years with 20 hours of continuing education within the 2-year certification period and at least 1 hour must be in pharmacy law. Continuing education hours can be earned from several different sources, including colleges, pharmacy associations, and pharmacy technician training programs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;5. Strong customer service and teamwork skills are needed because pharmacy technicians interact with patients, coworkers, and health care professionals 98% of their time&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;6. One need to have good skills and strong background in Mathematics, Spelling, and Reading as the pre-requisite to be a good pharmacy technicians. Successful pharmacy technicians are alert, observant, organized, dedicated, and responsible. They should be willing and able to take directions, but be able to work independently without supervisory and constant instructions.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;7. Someone whom are familiar with medical terminology and well aware of all the medications, pills, injection fluids which are in the pharmacy in their scientific terms as well as more layman names.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;8. Good interpersonal skills to deal with a wide variety of individuals in a team. He should be a team player, and mix along well with the rest of the team mates.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;9. He needs to be someone who is adaptable to performing multiple tasks. He need to be capable to handle all kinds of instructions given by the pharmacists at any one time. A pharmacy technician must be precise when they deal with medications and the necessary doses for different patients, which will either heal or kill the one who consumed them; therefore details are sometimes a matter of life and death. Thus, the responsibility of the pharmacy technicians is very important as they deal with medications.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;11. Candidates interested in becoming pharmacy technicians cannot have prior records of drug or substance abuse.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;12. Good pharmacy technician deserve a good career advancement. In large pharmacies and health-systems or even government hospitals, pharmacy technicians with significant training, experience and certification can be promoted to supervisory positions, mentoring and training pharmacy technicians with less experience. Properties are typically purchased at less than a 20% discount to after-repair value (ARV), which equates to around the same net sale proceeds using the traditional realtor process. Financial gains from the transaction are also borne by the seller. Do you train to get the glory of a $3.00 piece of plastic? Do you train to learn how to fight? If you do a &quot;martial sport&quot; and that is your intent and purpose and you realize that you will never do a back flip in a street fight, that&#39;s fine, drive on. If you train in a &quot;mixed martial art&quot; format and you realize that ring fighting is still different from street fighting that&#39;s good also and you are getting closer to the real thing. Many times we delude ourselves into thinking that what and how we are training is the best way. It never ceases to amaze me when I hear comments like &quot;My style is better that your style&quot;. [And my instructor can beat up your instructor!] On any given day someone can kick your butt. Maybe it has something to do with star alignment or something or maybe your karma is off that particular day. I have actually had people come into my dojo and make statements such as &quot;My instructor says this punch cannot be defended against.&quot; He was right. I could not defend against it. I was laughing way to hard to even try a block or deflection. Another was a couple of young men that asked what I would do if choked from the side. This was the infamous TV choke. You know, both hands around the throat. So the young man steps to my side to suppress my arm as he is choking me. He squeezes my throat as I do a five-finger testicular constriction. He lets go and runs out of the dojo. What does that tell you about his training or about my old age and treachery?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another issue that really irritates me is: are you being taught to fall properly? If not, go get your money back because you are being cheated. Of all the neat martial art goodies that we are presented it will probably be taking a proper break fall that will save your butt. Has mine having slipped on the ice while wearing my cop boots, dumping my motorcycle in the desert after having hit an unexpected muddy spot and also on a parachute jump where the DZ was infected by frozen irrigation ditches. I landed in the middle of one and if I had done a proper parachute-landing fall I probably would have broke my leg. Knowing how to fall can save your butt in a fight should you be taken to the ground, slip or get knocked down.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;A few years back I offered to let a young man use me as a punching dummy while he prepared for an up-coming tournament. He was young, strong and fast but every time I started a counter offensive he would turn his back to me and cover his head. You are a product of your training and nothing more. He would do the same thing in a street fight with deadly results. You will absolutely perform exactly as you train. The more you train a specific way the more your response will be as you have trained. This is as true for martial artists as it is for grunts. Train like you fight, fight like you train. A good reference to read is &quot;The Talent Code&quot; by Daniel Coyle.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Unlike fair fights, self-defense has no rules, just the application of correct principles. Hit any and all openings for your opponent will give you all the opportunity you need to defeat him or her. Hit hard and fast and don&#39;t stop until your opponent can no longer present a threat. My concept is to deliver 1-5 strikes which include knees, kicks, elbows, palm heels, eye pokes, etc. then throw your attacker to the ground as hard as possible. Then depending upon the tactical situation, finish him off with a constriction (an arm bar or a strangulation technique) or if the situation warrants, use your Cold Steel. Just make sure you can justify your actions. Better to be judged by twelve than carried by six.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Another concern I have is about the folks that are conned into taking a &quot;self defense&quot; course be it two hours at the local community center or other such venue lasting as long as six weeks. The training needs to be done to such an extent that it builds &quot;muscle memory&quot; and you just can&#39;t do that in a single two-hour class. Self-defense skills are perishable and must be practiced on a regular basis to be retained. For us martial artists to be able to claim mastery over a technique we must do it about 5000 times. You might be able to do that in a weekend if you are into self abuse but otherwise how many years does that take? Depends on the depth and intensity of your training. Some courses are good as they stress realism to a degree. You cannot get totally real without someone getting seriously hurt but you can induce enough of an adrenalin dump to get a good idea of what to expect. You must also train in the environment you expect to fight in. Yes we use mats most of the time to encourage longevity but occasionally the crusty old fart has everyone line up for break falls on the concrete floor. Someone even said it wasn&#39;t a good workout unless we drew blood. I&#39;m not sure of that, but...&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;An excellent source of information is available in books but reading about self-defense and getting on the mat are two different critters. One book I do highly recommend is &quot;Meditations on Violence&quot; by Rory Miller. In fact I make it mandatory reading for my black belt students. Avoidance is the best tool of self-defense you have and your brain the greatest weapon. A lot can be said about tongue fu and the ability to talk your way out of a confrontation.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;When you have no other course of action but to fight then you must flip the switch and become a human buzz saw. You will probably get hit but unless you are unconscious or dead you keep fighting. It ain&#39;t over until it is over, never quit.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Train hard. Bumps and bruises will heal with time. Not all of the lessons are found in the dojo. Be alert to your surroundings and don&#39;t be afraid to tell someone to back off or get lost. Listen to your instincts and act on them. It is best to never know if your skills would have been put to use in that dark alley you decided not to walk down because it didn&#39;t feel right.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;What possible benefit could tearing a deck of cards or bending nails have for a mixed martial artist?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Surely it would make more sense to train with specific grip equipment like grip machines, grippers, plate pinches and thick bars than trying to tear decks of cards, rip phone books, and bend steel, right?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Don&#39;t be so quick to dismiss feats of strength. They actually have much more benefit than meets the eye. Doing feats of strength is actually a good way to cross-train for Mixed Martial Arts. Here&#39;s why.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;In MMA, to a degree there is an element of viciousness, mental toughness, pain tolerance, and other intangibles.
