54.
No, it may not be the words you’re thinking. But my re-discovery of 3 very common 4-letter words come from a very recent experience with hip replacement surgery and how it always changes my perspective. (See video – it’s the reason you haven’t heard from me recently.)

60.

61.
62.
63.
64.
The first 4-letter word is STOP. We rarely stop – I am that person who is always moving. For a long time, I thought that “movement” – especially fast movement – made me feel exciting and dynamic. But, I think it mostly made me tired and distracted. Having to get a new hip has slowed me down in the best way – enjoying my life more with no lack of vitality. In fact it’s increased it!

65.
66.
67.
68.
The second one is REST. No one has time to rest, right?! When I ask clients what they do to rest, they look at me like a deer caught in headlights, desperately searching for the elusive answer. After all, we’ve been taught that if you don’t focus on accomplishment every freakin’ minute, you might miss something! And, there’s ALWAYS something to DO! Making calls, social media, marketing, answering e-mail, family issues, and worrying about – well, almost everything else. We don’t rest unless we value it and make time for it.

69.
70.
71.
72.
(But, did you know there are practices that focus exclusively on rest because it calms your nervous system?) My dear friend, Helen Hodgson teaches classes here in Hermosa Beach, and she introduced me to Yoga Nidra. (Not to be confused with yoga.) Life-changing. (The practice is available on You Tube too!). Check it out.

73.
74.
75.
76.
My third 4-letter word is LOVE. Are you loving your life? Not just what you’re doing, but your schedule, your rhythm, the people around you, and the way you spend your time? Do you experience a variety of activities, not just working? Is your life filled with zest? It’s not that easy these days, I know.

77.
78.
79.
80.
The traumas I have experienced over the years have ALWAYS led me to an awareness that less is more. When I “stop,” “relax,” and focus on living a life I love, everything just works! My health is more robust, I’m better for my clients and I’m a far more attractive magnet for money. But how do we do that?

81.
82.
83.
84.
Let me know if you experience any of these challenges and if you’d like an invitation to a free workshop addressing overcoming these stresses and thriving because I’ve found some things that work – no hip replacement required!!

124.
Were you taught that if you really wanted something badly enough, all you had to do was work really hard to get it? (My story entirely.)

125.
126.
127.
128.
Of course, if you don’t achieve that goal, the opposite is that, well, you didn’t work hard enough. This is the American Dream in action.

129.
130.
131.
132.
Unfortunately, the American credo isn’t quite right. The actual result is often not experiencing the pinnacle of your dreams, but rather suffering stress, exhaustion, health issues, and burn out.

133.
134.
135.
136.
Recent studies from Berkeley showed a whopping 72% of entrepreneurs deal with at least one mental health condition caused by stress and burnout. Yikes!

137.
138.
139.
140.
And the cure is simpler than you might think. For me personally and many of my clients, we keep “pushing through” our tasks “until we get it done.” (The American way). This means working when very little energy is left in the tank, putting a strain on well-being and work performance when we need to stop, take a break and come back more refreshed.

141.
142.
143.
144.
How long is the time we can work non-stop? Recent data shows our actual attention/energy span is no more than 2 hours, usually less before our brain needs to take a break.

145.
146.
147.
148.
Meaningful breaks during the day can help you recharge and come back to work with a fresh answer. That break does not have to be long – just doing something different from what you have been doing for 10 -20 minutes.

149.
150.
151.
152.
Our Fired Up for Success System has an actual step in our process called “Rejuvenation,” because most of us have been taught to just keep pushing well past our limits to meet expectations and deadlines. This is like driving a car hard without expecting to put gas in it.

153.
154.
155.
156.
But there’s other habits that contribute to our energy drain as well. So, I created a fast 10 Question Questionnaire so you can how your Personal Energy Management habits stack up.

206.
You know the word: “OVERWHELM!”

207.
208.
209.
210.
I mean how could you NOT be overwhelmed today, you may be thinking.

211.
212.
213.
214.
I used to say the word a lot, but one day I was talking to a friend about the state of my very justifiable overwhelm, and then I OUTLINED in DETAIL all the many reasons I was overwhelmed. Afterwards, I just felt depressed. Talking about it just made it so much worse. It certainly didn’t inspire me to get to what I needed to do. Talk about NOT being fired up!

215.
216.
217.
218.
One client decided to eradicate the word from her vocabulary. But it proved to be more challenging than she thought. What can we say instead? Here are some thoughts: “I have challenges I want to talk to you about.” Or “I need to prioritize some things.” Or “I am making choices.” In other words, it’s about shifting from being a victim of “too much to do,” to being pro-active, prioritizing, and making decisions about what works for you. That’s much more empowering!

219.
220.
221.
222.
Of course, this really is reflective of a deeper issue: how do we manage our energy? Studies are consistently showing that managing our energy is far more effective than managing our time, and I’ll talk more about that later!

298.
Valentine’s Day can be a loser if all this love is dependent on “GETTING LOVE”… from others in order to FEEL loved. But, what if feeling loved, nurtured and taken care of was not dependent on anyone else? What if you could do it yourself? The answer may be on the tip of your nose!

299.
300.
301.
302.
You can. It’s called SELF LOVE, and that is the best kind – at least the most reliable kind – of Valentine love, and there is no better holiday to practice it than on this one. Here’s 5 tips on creating a day filled with self-love:

303.
304.
305.
306.

307.
Start the day with a gratitude list of anything (absolutely anything) good that has happened to you in the past 24 hours. Feel your heart open and love pour out the more grateful you are. Gratitude is the foundation for all abundance; it’s always a good practice.

308.
309.
310.
311.
Give yourself a total day off from your critical inner voice. Protect that fragile inner part of yourself that carries your greatest passions and hopes – and greatest fears. Talk gently and kindly to yourself all day and feel the wellspring of good that open up for you.

312.
313.
314.
315.
Do something passionate. Endorphins, here you come! Self-Love is about connecting to yourself – what you love and desire. Most of our time is spent on “getting stuff done.” This is a great day to take a painting class, ride your bike, go to Zumba, get a massage or anything that nurtures your true nature. It’s important to get back in touch with who you really are and what you really want. It is truly the source of all your success and happiness.

316.
317.
318.
319.
Do something for someone less fortunate. Some of us spend way too much time focusing on what we don’t have, comparing ourselves with others, and bemoaning our fate. A few hours working with a homeless person, volunteering for at risk kids, or getting help for someone with an addiction problem or anything like that can change your entire perspective very quickly. Suddenly, life is not so bad, your problems not so big and your heart is filled with gratitude and love.

320.
321.
322.
323.
Get Support. Why would you send yourself out in the world alone? It’s YOUR responsibility to make notes of those who love you and make you feel good about yourself and to then SPEND TIME with them. DO NOT spend time with anyone who echoes those critical voices! Join activity groups, special interest groups, networking organizations, masterminds and any form of support. They will bolster you and you won’t feel so alone.

324.

325.
326.
327.
328.
So why is a success coach talking about loving yourself on Valentine’s Day? If you look at the 5 tips above and applied them to your career or business, I think you can see it could have a dramatically positive impact. In fact, look at it also as a formula for a wonderful Valentine’s Day filled with self-love and good feelings – with or without a partner!

329.
330.
331.
332.
Happy Valentine’s because if you’re reading this, I love you for sure!

380.
Of course, my own aging has dramatically changed that. But, as I approach what would have been my Mom’s 96th birthday this week (she passed away at the ripe age of 91 in 2018) I wanted to take a moment and honor a woman who taught me the basics about living life with gusto and passion – NOT JUST AT 65, BUT AT ANY AGE and pass them on to you.

381.
382.
383.
384.
#1 STAY ENGAGED WITH WHAT YOU LOVE.

385.
386.
387.
388.
She was never a “do what you love-the money will follow” kind of lady. But she was a “stay engaged with everything you love” kind of person.

389.

390.

391.
392.
393.
394.
This photo is Mom at 90. We are at some roadside restaurant in Arizona, but Mom was dressed impeccably because she, well, always loved to be well dressed. ( She was with all of 3 adult her children who were celebrating dressed in jeans and sweatshirts for her birthday.)She then went back to her assisted living home where she was enormously popular and involved in Bingo, Bunko and Bridge and some other “B” games, I’m sure. She went on bus rides and outings and to her “Red Hat Women” lunches and to things that absolutely exhausted me. She continued her other favorite hobbies like volunteering at the SPCA and bird watching. The point is she was engaged with meaningful activities, and that’s what I want to keep doing as well. (I love what I do so I’ll probably keep doing it a long time.) What kind of activities are you doing that you love and keep you engaged?

395.
396.
397.
398.
#2 KEEP DOING WHAT YOU LOVE, BUT SHIFT WHEN YOU NEED TO CHANGE DIRECTION. TAKE RISKS.

399.
400.
401.
402.
There came a point when Mom could no longer manage her ample house in Carmel, no matter how much she loved it. She packed up most of what she owned, – and I mean SHE did a lot of it herself, donated a bunch, sold the house and moved to Prescott, Arizona where she could be nearer my brother and sister. She was easily in her mid-80’s suddenly heading out in an adventurous new direction. She found a great place and lived there happily until she passed. By the time she was 90, she had seemed to have had almost no mental decline. My brother, sister and I attribute it to her engaged life and to being able to take the risks she needed. Are you taking all the risks you need to?

403.
404.
405.
406.
#3 STOP COMPLAINING.

407.
408.
409.
410.
Over the years, she had considerable physical problems. She could no longer walk on her own; struggled with narcolepsy, neuropathy and some other “n” words and sported several monitors beneath her cute stylish jeans and periodically visited Emergency Rooms, but nonetheless remained high spirited, engaged, and able to whip through a department store on her walker at amazing speeds (gives new meaning to “shop ’til you drop”) and spent ZERO time feeling sorry for herself. (This is the #1 trait I admire.) While many her age were drooling into a cup, she was making plans. Have you ever focused on just what was going wrong instead of making other plans? (I sure have.)

411.
412.
413.
414.
#4 MAKE PLANS…ANY PLAN.

415.
416.
417.
418.
I think part of why she complained so little is that she was always making plans. She always had another vision. She was re-arranging the bedroom, going thrift shopping, or looking for an exotic trip. She found the perfect traveling companion in my retired teacher-sister, and they went to Mexico enough times that they bought a family condo, and shortly before she passed away, they had just returned from a cruise to Russia.

419.
420.
421.
422.
I am so grateful to this woman (Barbara) who became my mother after my birth mother passed away when I was 11, and took me as her own when she married my dad. I think anyone who knows me well may see that I learned quite a bit from her, and now I get to pass her wisdom on to you.

423.
424.
425.
426.
PS: If you want to talk about enlarging your Passion, Purpose, Visioning, or Community, (or Aging) that’s what we do – and you can blame my mother for it.

459.
For over 30 years professionals wanting to make changes in their lives and career have come to me because they want to know what to do next in their lives. They may be phasing out of a job/career – (or being asked to leave: Downsizing, reorganizing, or policy disagreements). They may be on the retirement circuit. Or they may be feeling a strong pull to do something else without really understanding what it might be, but it is time to do something else and find a new direction in life.

460.
461.
462.
463.
Whatever their reasons, when I ask about their talents, many of these smart, savvy professionals suddenly become uncertain and hesitant, finding it difficult to name many talents at all. Yet, I know – as do their friends and associates, that they are quite brilliant in several ways.

464.
465.
466.
467.
Has this ever happened to you? It has happened to me for sure. It’s an awful feeling to stutter out, “Well, gee, I think I’m good with people.” Heaven knows I do not want to brag about myself. But, to quote the line from the movie, Pretty Woman, “Big Mistake. Huge.”

468.
469.
470.
471.
One of the problems is that when facing uncertainty, we just don’t have the words to sell ourselves. Here’s one of the first things I do with my clients. We do a deep dive into their gifts, talents and abilities using a variety of questionnaires and coaching resources so that they leave crystal clear about who they are. We find the unique exact words that not only describe who they are at their core, but what they have to offer. Because the two primary assets we need to be armed with in life are the right words about ourselves and the ability to express how we can help others. The rest is filling in the details.

472.

510.
One of my clients recently told me she had a difficult time slowing down because she gets so much “energy from being stressed.” So, I just had to comment.

511.
512.
513.
514.
Actually, stress can give a burst of energy from time to time, however, you cannot do it over any extended period of time simply because it will do tremendous damage to your body, …..and sometimes kill you.

515.
516.
517.
518.
But, sometimes you may just get overwhelmed. If it just seems like “too much of everything to think about,” here’s a simple 3 step trick that works for me a lot, and for many of my clients when they’ve tried it!

519.
520.
521.
522.

523.
First identify. What is really stressing you? I mean all of it…. from the phone call with your Uncle Bob, the pressure from your tax lady, the presentation that’s due too soon, your dog who ate the mousetrap and the panic you’re feeling about your dog – and the mouse. WRITE IT ALL DOWN on a big pierce pf paper or yellow pad. Nothing is too big, too little or too unrelated. It’s a basic “brain dump.” Take 24 hours if you can. (Mice live a long time.) I’ve found that seeing what is taking up all that space in your brain helps crystallize the issues and relieve some stress in your head and heart.

524.

525.
526.
527.
528.

529.
Then, classify. Things are usually related. You’re stressed about your presentation because you may not have all the tools you need (Canva, speech coach, etc.) so you’re stressed about both the presentation and lack of tools. All of that is one category: Presentation (but with sub-headings like Canva, Get a speech coach, etc.) We tend to stress over everything individually so you think of it as 5 different subjects to worry over. Often it’s only one or two or three issues that have several components. In this case, one was how to get a good presentation done. Another one might be about your dog. Just the one category of to take dog to vet will take of your dog and the mouse. Classify and bundle everything you can. Suddenly the 10 issues that made you feel so out of control have become maybe 3 or 4. You can handle that!

530.

531.
532.
533.
534.

535.
Take action. Generally, we have a combo of only 3-4 reasons for stress. (I know, it feels like at least 25, but that’s because of the repetitive thoughts about the same thing over and over.) Once identified, you can now begin to divide into the first action step for each one. No more than ONE. That’s because if you do more, you know what will happen?

536.

537.
538.
539.
540.
YOU’LL GET MORE STRESSED!!

541.
542.
543.
544.
But this is just one approach, so if you have others that have worked for you, be sure to e-mail me, and next time I’ll include it in my blog.

545.
546.
547.
548.
So, let’s reduce our stress!!…

549.
550.
551.
552.
IT WILL HELP YOU FEEL MORE FIRED UP!!

553.
554.

603.
I realize Doing vs. Being is an age-old conundrum, and most of us Do because it gives us a sense of control. But, too much Doing results in a newer problem: workaholism, and I have had to deal with this in some form most of my life. (FYI you don’t have to be working to experience it; just talk to an overwrought parent.)

607.
Therefore, my personal advice is not to stop being a “Doer” entirely and spend the week in meditation (although not a bad idea), but it’s a too difficult a shift to make. Rather, choose more activity representing your passions and joys – activities that make you feel more alive! And do them a lot. This summer.

664.
So, I’ll try to keep it simple: we get stuck because our energy and excitement has stalled (or been suffocated.) It may feel like you’re flailing like when drowning – desperately looking for new ideas to save you before you sink. You may feel a little panicked about how to fix it. It’s like going underwater; the more we fight it, the harder it is to stay above the water, and we end up feeling more frustrated and out of control.

666.

667.
668.
669.
670.
Since I see this a lot, I thought I’d share 5 simple steps that have helped others and may help you when you feel like you’re struggling:

671.
672.
673.
674.

675.
STOP!! NOW!! If you find yourself thinking the same ideas over and over, you’re just repetitively processing the same negative information. It will never fix it! So. Stop. (Hardest part of process.)

676.
677.
678.
679.
Reflect. What are you thinking? Literally. Write it the thoughts that are crushing your idea or direction. See the thoughts written down. Something happened. What was it? What are your repetitive thoughts? What fears are you experiencing? Get concrete about what you’re really thinking. By the way, what you think is not a reflection of your possibilities; it is a reflection on what’s keeping you stuck. Big difference, and important for you to know.

680.
681.
682.
683.
Re-visit. Don’t try to “fix” anything yet. Once you’re a little clearer about what’s going on, it’s time to re-visit (or maybe visit for the first time) what is meaningful to you. What do you love doing? Ideally, what are your dreams? What do you want to happen in your life? Feeling more of a sense of meaning and purpose creates energy. Allow yourself to get excited even though you have no idea how any of it could happen.

684.
685.
686.
687.
Resource. Start to explore. What might be your next step? What resources will you need? Slowly, start to make lists so you can prioritize your steps. You might need support. Fired Up operates as a community environment – we can do so much more together than we can do alone. That might be a possibility. We can certainly help you create a new vision of your business, project or future.

688.
689.
690.
691.
Get Accountable. Find a colleague, a friend, a group, someone to report to on a regular basis. Accountability is probably one of the single most important keys to success and accomplishment – whether you’re aiming to be a CEO, write a book, or find a mate. We live in a communal world today, and someone else or a group of someone else’s knowing what you’ve promised yourself, helping you focus on small next steps, are the most enjoyable – (and least painful ways) to get to your goals.

692.

693.
694.
695.
696.
And the best way to get unstuck!!

697.
698.
699.
700.
Can’t think of someone you want to ask for an accountability relationship? Are you interested in exploring either personal or team accountability? We do both and have a rockin’ accountability program called “Fired Up Momentum ™.” You are invited to come and experience it for yourself. But, first, set a time for a few minutes with me, and I’d be happy to help you find some answers to your unique challenges.

701.
702.
703.
704.
https://calendly.com/firedup/30-minutes

705.
706.
707.
708.
You don’t have to share your dreams and desires with everyone; just someone.
