42.
KOTA KINABALU: Deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi wants more young people in Sabah to be exposed to technical and vocational education and training (TVET) to meet the demand by foreign or domestic investors for skilled workers.

 43.
Zahid, who is also the rural and regional development minister, said he was recently offered by China to send 2,000 Malaysian students to join TVET programmes with full scholarships in the country, and wants to ensure that 500 places are filled by Sabah youths.

 44.
“This is also to ensure that young people in Sabah are trained and given high-tech jobs,” he said at the Putatan Umno division’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration here tonight .

 45.
Also present were Sabah Umno secretary Jafry Ariffin and Putatan Umno division chief Jeffrey Nor Mohamed.

 46.
Zahid, who is the Umno president, said Sabah received RM11.34 billion in investments last year which he said must be translated into economic development for the people in the state, especially in terms of more job opportunities.

 47.
“Investment is now forthcoming because of Sabah’s huge potential and this means more job opportunities. So, young people must be equipped with TVET knowledge,” he said.

(Bernama pic)

 71.
PETALING JAYA: Umno is a national party and not a Malayan one, as it fights for all citizens, including Sabahans, its president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

 72.
Zahid also said the decision to set up a Sabah chapter was not aimed at breaking up the Sabah-based parties, but to unite Malaysians under a common banner, Bernama reported.

 73.
He said it was the people of Sabah who wanted Umno to expand its wings in the state, adding that former chief minister and Usno president, the late Mustapha Harun wanted East Malaysians and West Malaysians to come together.

 74.
“Umno initially had no intention to enter Sabah, but we were invited by its people.

 75.
“Sabahans wanted Umno to flourish in the state,” he was quoted as saying at an Aidifitri celebration organised by Putatan Umno in Kota Kinabalu tonight.

 76.
Zahid recalled that when he was the Umno Youth information chief, he had travelled to Sabah with forms to recruit members when the party was set up in the state.

 77.
In 2017, former chief minister Harris Salleh revealed that he was among the state’s four Malay leaders who officially wrote to then prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to invite Umno to Sabah in 1986.

 78.
According to the Daily Express, Harris said the other three were Sakaran Dandai, Said Keruak and Ghani Gilong.

 79.
He said the decision to invite Umno to Sabah was because Parti Bersatu Sabah had failed to honour the pre-election agreement with Usno on the formation of a coalition government after the 1985 general election.

 80.
It was also done with the hope that through Umno, a Sabahan could become the prime minister.

 103.
PETALING JAYA: Usaha membawa masuk Umno ke Sabah suatu ketika dahulu bukan untuk memecah-belahkan parti-parti Sabah, Sarawak atau Semenanjung, sebaliknya bertujuan menyatukan rakyat bawah payung yang sama, kata Zahid Hamidi.

 104.

(Bernama pic)

 156.
PUTRAJAYA: A syndicate that stole subsidised diesel at a nondescript location in Klang was busted when a team of enforcers from the domestic trade and cost of living ministry raided the premises on April 16.

 157.
The raid led to the arrest of two men, both Malaysians, aged 48 and 67.

 158.
The ministry’s enforcement director-general, Azman Adam, said the syndicate used fake vehicle registration plates.

 159.
He said the premises was an illegal storage facility used to transfer subsidised diesel before it was sold on the black market.

 160.
“A further inspection of the facility uncovered 9,000 litres of diesel as well as equipment used for the illegal activities,” he said in a statement today.

 161.
Azman said a lorry, several intermediate bulk container tanks and a skid tank containing diesel, a motor pump, documents and other equipment were seized from the premises. Their total value was estimated at RM88,300.

 162.
He said the case is being investigated under the Control of Supplies Act 1961 (Act 122) to identify individuals or companies involved in the diesel distribution chain.

 163.
The companies would be investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

(AP pic)

 185.
SHANGHAI: Formula One stewards dismissed an Aston Martin protest over the results of today’s Chinese Grand Prix qualifying after Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz was allowed to take part in the final phase despite crashing and stopping on track.

 186.
Sainz brought out red flags in the second phase when he ran wide and spun across the track, brushing the tyre wall, at the final corner.

 187.
But after stopping for a minute and 17 seconds, he returned to the pits for new tyres and front wing and completed qualifying when the track was re-opened.

 188.
The Spaniard will start seventh on the grid.

 189.
Aston Martin, who had Fernando Alonso qualify third for tomorrow’s race but teammate Lance Stroll 11th, had protested an alleged breach of article 39.6 of Formula One’s sporting regulations.

 190.
Stroll would have made the top 10 had Sainz not continued.

 191.
The article states that “any driver whose car stops on the track during the qualifying session or the sprint qualifying session shootout will not be permitted to take any further part in that session”.

 192.
The stewards ruled that past practice was for a car to be allowed to restart and continue so long as the driver received no outside assistance.

 193.
“It is clear that the plain language of article 39.6 suggests that so long as a car ‘stops’ on the track during a qualifying session, that car should not be permitted to take further part in the session,” the stewards said.

 194.
“However, it was clear from the examples cited by a number of the team managers present and the (governing) FIA, that this was not how this rule was applied by the teams and the FIA in the past.

 195.
“The FIA team explained that so long as the car was able to restart and continue from a stopped position within a reasonable time, that would ordinarily be permitted.”

 196.
The stewards said a typical time allowed would be 30 seconds.

 197.
“Absent clear guidance in the regulations or an agreed, established practice of when too long was too long, we considered that this was a discretion best left to Race Control,” the stewards said.

 198.
They cited examples from past races in Canada, Monaco and Azerbaijan where cars had been reported as ‘stopped’ but subsequently allowed to continue without complaint.

 220.
No time has yet been set for the resumption of flights.

 246.
BARCELONA: Norwegian third seed Casper Ruud defeated Argentina’s Tomas Etcheverry 7-6(6), 6-4 today to book a spot in the Barcelona Open final.

 247.
The world No 6, who has not dropped a set so far as he cruised to his fourth final this season, is still seeking his first tour-level title since lifting the trophy in Estoril last April.

 248.
The pair were neck and neck in the first set on Barcelona’s clay until Ruud took his first chance to break for a 4-2 lead before Etcheverry, seeded 13th, returned the favour in the following game.

 249.
The Argentine saved two set points to take it to a tie-break, only to see Ruud clinch it having saved one set point himself after a 76-minute set.

 250.
It was just as close in the second but Ruud proved too strong for Etcheverry, playing in his first ATP 500 semifinal.

 251.
“Those three finals losses this year have been making me hungrier,” Ruud said.

 252.
“I’m gonna dream about (clinching the title) tonight.

 253.
“Last week I put a bit too much pressure on myself. I play my best when I’m cool and don’t think too much about it out there. That’s what I did today.”

 254.
Before his defeat by Stefanos Tsitsipas in Monte Carlo last week, Ruud lost finals in Los Cabos and Acapulco earlier this year.

 255.
He will face either Tsitsipas or Dusan Lajovic in the final tomorrow.

 278.
PETALING JAYA: Hotel bajet terpaksa menaikan harga susulan impak ketiadaan kawal selia terhadap penginapan jangka pendek yang “tumbuh bagai cendawan”, kata Presiden Persatuan Hotel Bajet & Bisnes Malaysia (MyBHA) Sri Ganesh Michiel.

 279.

 285.
MyBHA mendesak dilaksanakan kawal selia terhadap unit kediaman atau rumah kedai diubah menjadi unit atau bilik kediaman jangka masa pendek, yang kemudiannya dijual melalui portal agensi pelancongan dalam talian tanpa memerlukan apa-apa lesen perniagaan.

 309.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Budget and Business Hotel Association (MyBHA) said Sarawak budget hotels will only raise their rates if nothing is done to resolve threats to the industry in the state.

 310.
Its president, Sri Ganesh Michiel, said the association’s members have no intention of indiscriminately raising their rates.

 311.
“We appeal to Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s tourism, creative industry and performing arts minister, and the relevant authorities to immediately assist budget hotel entrepreneurs or operators especially in the state, in ensuring the sustainability of their businesses,” he said in a statement tonight.

 312.
Ganesh was responding to Karim’s warning two days ago against budget hotel operators raising their rates indiscriminately, saying it could be detrimental to the efforts to revive the industry.

 313.
MyBHA had previously warned of 30% to 40% rate hikes over the next three months because of various factors that impacted operational costs.

 314.
Ganesh said some of the threats the budget hotel operators faced in Sarawak included the failure to regulate online travel agencies and short-term rental accommodation (STRA).

 315.
He said STRAs operated without valid business licences.

 316.
Ganesh also said no action had been taken against unlicensed accommodation providers, which affected licensed operators.

 317.
He said these issues had been highlighted at the AGM of the association’s Sarawak chapter on April 18.

 318.
“We continue to support the state government’s ambition to attract a high volume of tourists, but the government must ensure that the beneficiaries of tourist arrivals are registered and licensed tourism or hospitality industry entrepreneurs,” he said.

 339.
KABUL: Ongoing downpours have killed another 29 people in Afghanistan over the past four days, the government disaster management department said today.

 340.
Afghanistan was parched by an unusually dry winter that desiccated the earth, followed by a two-week streak of downpours in most provinces that has caused sporadic flash flooding.

 341.
Disaster management department spokesman Janan Sayeq said “29 people lost their lives because of rains” between Wednesday and today, with fatalities spread across ten provinces.

 342.
Seven others have been injured over the same period, he said, while 72 houses have been damaged or destroyed, and more than 2,500 acres of agricultural land swept away.

 343.
More than 100 people have been killed in flooding this month, according to official figures, whilst more than 25,000 families have required aid as a result of the deluge.

 344.
The United Nations last year warned that “Afghanistan is experiencing major swings in extreme weather conditions”.

 345.
After four decades of war, the country ranks among the nations least prepared to face extreme weather events, which scientists say are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change.

 346.
At least 25 people were killed in a landslide after massive snowfall in eastern Afghanistan in February, while around 60 were killed in a three-week spate of precipitation ending in March.

 394.
TULKAREM: The Israeli army said today that its security forces killed 10 fighters in an ongoing raid around Nur Shams, a refugee camp in the north of the occupied West Bank.

 395.
“Security forces eliminated 10 terrorists during encounters” over more than 40 hours, the army said in a statement.

 398.
Residents contacted by AFP said there was a power outage and food was running short in the camp, saying nobody was allowed to enter or leave.

 399.
Since early last year violence has flared across the West Bank, which Israel has occupied since 1967.

(Bernama pic)

 424.
PETALING JAYA: Social media influencer “Lim Sian See” has questioned economy minister Rafizi Ramli’s claim that he was evading authorities by using a pseudonym.

 425.
“Lim” said he found it odd that Rafizi, the PKR deputy president, would want action to be taken against critics when the party had once declared itself to be the “most democratic party in Southeast Asia”.

 426.
“Lim” was alluding to the claim made by PKR vice-president Amirudin Shari in 2022, when he took a swipe at former party deputy president Azmin Ali.

 427.
“How can a party that claims to be democratic want action to be taken against its critics. That reeks of despotism,” he said in a message to FMT.

 428.
“Rafizi should instead counter critics via debates.”

 429.
“Lim” said that if he had defamed anyone by his criticisms, then his detractors should lodge a police report and sue him.

 430.
“But I have never lied or slandered anyone,” he said.

 431.
He was responding to a report by New Straits Times which quoted Rafizi as saying that “Lim” evaded authorities by using the alias “to criticise anyone without facing any consequences”.

 432.
“Lim” also said he had no issue complying with the conditions set by the Pandan MP for their expected meeting, including for him to use his actual name and providing his identity card details and full address.

 433.
Rafizi had stipulated the requirements to ensure the person did not hide behind the “Lim Sian See” persona.

 434.
“Lim” jokingly asked if Rafizi wanted his blood type and vaccination status.

 435.
“He should just set a date as Rafizi made the challenge in February. Now we are approaching the end of April,” he said.

 436.
He also said he was puzzled by Rafizi taking a swipe at him by stating that he craved for attention.

 437.
“If I recall, it was Rafizi who said he wanted to invite me over to the podcast, and now when I follow up on the challenge, I am accused of craving for attention.”

 458.
NAIROBI: With a 19-gun cannon salute and a religious ceremony Kenya today paid a military tribute to its army chief who died in a helicopter accident this week.

 459.
Kenyan president William Ruto, along with deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and opposition leader Raila Odinga, attended the ceremony at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in the capital Nairobi.

 460.
Francis Omondi Ogolla’s coffin, topped with the Kenyan flag, entered the enclosure at 1pm, accompanied by great fanfare before a minute of silence then ensued for the former Chief of the Kenya Defence Forces (CDF).

 461.
Ogolla, 61, and nine other military officials perished on Thursday when their helicopter went down in a remote region in the west of the country, just short of a year since his appointment as armed forces head by Ruto.

 462.
Ogolla, a trained fighter pilot, was killed when his helicopter went down shortly after take-off in the remote Sindar forested area in Elgeyo Marakwet county in northwestern Kenya, some 400km from Nairobi.

 463.
He had been visiting troops deployed in a security operation in the North Rift region, which is plagued by violence caused by armed bandits and cattle rustlers.

 464.
Two military personnel aboard survived the crash.

 465.
According to Ruto, the crew were on a Bell UH-1B copter, nicknamed “Huey”, a model developed in the 1950s and used notably by US forces serving in the war in Vietnam.

 466.
Kenyan media have reported that Thursday’s crash was the fifth involving a Kenyan military copter in the past year with a considerable number old and poorly maintained.

 467.
The Kenya Air Force has dispatched a team of investigators to determine what caused the accident which sparked three days of mourning from Friday across the country.

 468.
Worldwide condolences

 469.
Ogolla’s family said in a statement yesterday that his funeral would be held tomorrow at his home in Siaya in the west of the country, followed by a memorial service in a Nairobi suburb on April 26.

 470.
Ogolla, a married father of two with one grandchild, had headed his country’s air force between 2018 and 2021.

 471.
He had joined the KDF in April 1984, rising through the ranks to command the air force before going on to become vice chief of the defence forces in 2021 and then chief 12 months ago.

 472.
In June 2021, at least 10 soldiers died when their helicopter crashed during a training exercise to the south of Nairobi.

 473.
In 2012, internal security minister George Saitoti, seen as a possible presidential candidate, was another high-profile crash victim as one of six people killed in a police helicopter crash.

 474.
Messages of condolence for Thursday’s crash came in from across Kenya and the African continent yesterday as well as the United Nations, the US and allies.

(AFP pic)

 526.
RIYADH: Dubai’s flagship carrier Emirates and sister airline flydubai have restored normal operations after heavy rains caused severe flooding across the UAE earlier this week, the airlines said today.

 527.
Emirates cancelled nearly 400 flights and delayed many more as a result of a record storm that hit the desert city of Dubai on Tuesday, said a statement released by the airline’s president, Tim Clark.

 528.
Due to the impact of the storm, the airline suspended check-in for passengers departing from Dubai and halted its transit operations through Dubai International Airport, a major global travel hub, leaving thousands of travellers stranded.

 529.
The airport has struggled to return to normal operations after the storm flooded taxiways, forcing flight diversions, delays and cancellations.

 530.
Flydubai also returned to its full flight schedule from the airport’s Terminal 2 and Terminal 3 today following the weather-related disruption, a spokesman for the airline said.

 531.
Clark said Emirates had provided 12,000 hotel rooms and 250,000 meal vouchers to customers who were affected.

 532.
He added it would take days to clear the backlog of rebooked passengers.

 533.
The UAE has suffered the impact of the flooding for days, with roads between the city and Abu Dhabi still partially under water as of today.

 534.
In Abu Dhabi, some supermarkets and restaurants faced product shortages, unable to receive deliveries from Dubai.

 535.
Researchers have linked extreme weather events such as Tuesday’s storm to climate change and anticipate that global warming will lead to higher temperatures, increased humidity and a greater risk of flooding in parts of the Gulf region.

 536.
A lack of drainage infrastructure to cope with heavy rains in countries such as the UAE can put them at particular risk of flooding.

 559.
PUTRAJAYA: Kegiatan penyelewengan minyak diesel bersubsidi yang dilakukan satu sindiket di sebuah premis di Klang terbongkar apabila diserbu Kementerian Perdagangan Dalam Negeri dan Kos Sara Hidup (KPDN) Selangor Selasa lepas.

 560.

 565.
Katanya, syarikat terbabit juga akan disiasat bawah Akta Pencegahan Pengubahan Wang Haram, Pencegahan Pembiayaan Keganasan dan Hasil Daripada Aktiviti Haram 2001 (Amla)

(AP pic)

 612.
SEOUL: South Korea’s leading doctors’ body today rejected a revised medical reform plan from the government, the initial version of which sparked a strike two months ago.

 613.
The ongoing walkout by thousands of trainee doctors has caused chaos in South Korean hospitals, and is in response to a plan to boost annual admissions to medical schools by 2,000 from next year.

 614.
The government yesterday offered its first concession, allowing 32 universities to admit as few as 1,000 medical students instead of the initially proposed 2,000 – but the Korean Medical Association (KMA) said the plan must be abandoned entirely within a week.

 615.
“Since this is not a fundamental solution, the emergency committee of the Korean Medical Association clearly states that it cannot accept it,” Kim Sung-geun, a KMA spokesman, told reporters.

 616.
“For the sake of our country’s future and to protect the health of patients currently suffering, we ask the president … to discuss this again from square one.”

 617.
Kim said “one week is left” to find a solution.

 618.
The government claims its plan will alleviate doctor shortages for an ageing society, but medical professionals and trainees say it will diminish the quality of education and healthcare.

 619.
The strike, which began on Feb 20, has forced hospitals to cancel essential treatments and surgeries.

 620.
On top of the trainee doctors, who play a key role in emergency procedures and surgeries at general hospitals, more than 50% of the country’s medical students have also filed for a leave of absence, according to the education ministry.

 621.
The KMA warned that if the government does not relent, medical students will likely be forced to repeat a year, senior doctors at general hospitals will start to resign on April 25, and the healthcare system could “collapse”.

 622.
The government’s offer came after President Yoon Suk-yeol’s conservative ruling party suffered a crushing defeat in parliamentary elections this month.

 623.
Initially, there was public sympathy for the government, but polls leading up to the April 10 election indicated that the mood had shifted.

 624.
Nearly 60% of people surveyed in a Dong-A Ilbo poll said the government should adjust the scale and timing of its reform plan.

 625.
The main opposition Democratic Party has also criticised Yoon and urged him to revise the reform plan.

 626.
The government had previously warned of legal consequences if doctors did not return to work, and suspended the medical licences of two KMA officials purportedly for instigating the walkout.

 627.
Proponents of the plan say opposing doctors are simply trying to safeguard their salaries and social status.

 649.

 657.
Pada Khamis, Anwar dilapor berkata projek berimpak tinggi seperti Zon Ekonomi Khas Johor-Singapura (JS-SEZ) dan Zon Kewangan Khas (SFZ) mampu memacu ekonomi Johor mengatasi negeri-negeri lain dalam tempoh satu hingga dua tahun akan datang.

 709.
PETALING JAYA: Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) berdepan cabaran dalam usaha mengekang rasuah kerana tidak berkemampuan mengenakan hukuman terhadap sesiapa yang mengamalkan rasuah ketika pilihan raya, kata sebuah kumpulan pemantau pilihan raya.

 710.
Mengulas mengenai peruntukan pembangunan daripada kerajaan untuk Hulu Selangor, yang diumumkan menjelang PRK Kuala Kubu Baharu pada 11 Mei, Pengarah Tindak Malaysia Danesh Prakash Chacko berkata, proses mendakwa seseorang atas kesalahan rasuah mesti melalui mahkamah kerana ia satu kesalahan besar bawah Kanun Prosedur Jenayah.

 711.

 716.
Menyangkal kenyataan Setiausaha DAP Selangor Ng Sze Han yang mempertahankan peruntukan itu, Chacko menekankan bahawa Seksyen 10(a) Akta Kesalahan Pilihan Raya 1954 menyatakan bahawa rasuah pilihan raya juga merangkumi sebarang tindakan yang diambil sebelum pilihan raya.

 717.
“Pengumuman peruntukan oleh kementerian itu tidak boleh diambil mudah,” katanya.

 718.
Ng semalam berkata, peruntukan itu ialah “perkara biasa” dan tiada kaitan dengan PRK di Kuala Kubu Baharu memandangkan ia diumumkan di luar tempoh berkempen.

 743.
KULAI: About 70% of the properties in Forest City, Iskandar Puteri, have been sold over the past two years.

 744.
This trend is set to continue or increase over the next three or four year, said state housing and local government committee chairman Jafni Shukor.

 745.
“Many unsold properties over the past four years have been sold.

 746.
“For example, in Forest City, which people called a ‘ghost town’, many people do not know that 70% of the properties there have been sold.

 747.
“This is also true for Country Garden and the surrounding areas of Johor Bahru,” he told reporters after a Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house at Hutan Bandar Kulai here today.

 748.
Jafni was asked to comment on the number of properties sold in Forest City so far.

 749.
He said the state government was committed to addressing the issue of unsold properties.

 750.
On another matter, he said the state government’s initiative to enhance the efficiency of work processes and governance to reduce red tape or bureaucracy in the government delivery system could prove to be a catalyst for further progress.

 751.
This could be seen through a recent statement by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who expected Johor to become the most developed state in Malaysia following the implementation of several high-impact projects.

 752.
He said this was true as Johor menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi had engaged actively with investors from Singapore and China to obtain fresh investments.

 753.
Last Thursday, Anwar said he expected the Johor-Singapore special economic zone and the special financial zone in Forest City to drive Johor’s economy to surpass other states within the next one to two years.
