48.
In a 2012 deposition reviewed by the Times, Kennedy said a worm “got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died.” He said the cognitive issues later resolved. Around the same time, the Times reports, Kennedy was also diagnosed with mercury poisoning, which can also result in cognitive issues.

 49.
Though they sound like something straight out of a horror movie, parasites can and do affect the human brain. Here’s what to know.

 50.
How do parasites get into the brain?

 51.
According to the Times‘ reporting, Kennedy said he did not know which type of parasite affected him, but experts told the Times it likely came from the larvae of a tapeworm sometimes found in pork. People can ingest a tapeworm’s eggs by eating contaminated food or water, resulting in the parasitic infection cysticercosis—which is called neurocysticercosis when it affects the brain.

 52.
Most often, people contract neurocysticercosis not directly from eating pork, but through exposure to fecal contamination, says Scott Gardner, curator of the Manter Laboratory of Parasitology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. If someone eats undercooked pork carrying a tapeworm, they may later pass the worm’s eggs through their feces. If the affected person does not properly wash their hands after using the bathroom, they may spread the worm’s tiny eggs to household surfaces or to food and water, potentially leading people to ingest them and get sick, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). When the eggs hatch and larvae get into tissues like the brain, they form cysts there.

 53.
Read More: Ticks Carry More Diseases Than Lyme. Here’s What You Need to Know

 54.
Neurocysticercosis is rare in the U.S., but it is more common in parts of Asia and Latin America, says Gardner. As of 2017, the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases estimated that only about 1,500 cases were diagnosed in the U.S. each year. A 2012 study estimated its mortality rate to be around 0.06 deaths per 1 million people in the U.S.

 55.
Toxoplasma gondii is another far more common parasite that can affect the human brain, resulting in the infection toxoplasmosis. It can be spread via exposure to feline feces, as well as eating undercooked meat or shellfish or drinking contaminated water, the CDC says. The CDC estimates that up to 40 million people in the U.S. carry the parasite, though many don’t know it.

 56.
How dangerous are brain parasites?

 57.
Surprisingly, brain parasites don’t always cause serious issues, says Tajie Harris, an associate professor of neuroscience at the University of Virginia School of Medicine who has studied brain parasites. “We acquire a lot of infections that we never really notice or attribute to these viruses or parasites that do end up in our brains for the long-term,” she says. “Most of them go into this dormant state and cause us no problems in our lifetime.”

 58.
Harris’ research, for example, has shown that the brain launches such an effective immune response against T.gondii that many people never develop toxoplasmosis symptoms. When people do experience symptoms, which can be treated with antiparasitic medications in combination with antibiotics, they may develop flu-like muscle aches and swollen glands. Severe toxoplasmosis, which is most common among infants and people who are seriously immunocompromised, can result in damage to the brain, eyes, and other organs. Some studies have also linked the infection to mental-health issues, although Harris says that science is less settled.

 59.
Read More: The New Vaccines to Get in 2024

 60.
Neurocysticercosis can also remain dormant for some time. People do not typically develop symptoms until cysts caused by the parasite die, which can take months or even years, the CDC says. Symptoms can include headaches, seizures, confusion, and difficulty focusing and balancing. In serious cases, the condition can lead to excess fluid around the brain, which may be fatal. Typically, neurocysticercosis can be treated with antiparasitic drugs, sometimes used in combination with anti-inflammatory medications and surgery.

 61.
Dr. Michael Schulder, professor and vice chair of neurosurgery at Northwell Health in New York, says the symptoms Kennedy apparently suffered, including memory loss and brain fog, are not typical for neurocysticercosis and would likely be associated with a “particularly large cyst that put pressure on the brain.”

 62.
The parasite also does not eat the brain, he clarifies. If it did, the sufferer would have permanent damage. “It may not be gross damage that would prevent you from leading an independent life,” Schulder says, “but it would certainly prevent you from functioning at 100%.”

 63.
How can I prevent brain parasites?

 64.
Good hygiene and food preparation practices are important. Health authorities emphasize the importance of thoroughly washing your hands after using the bathroom, changing a child’s diaper, or handling a cat’s litter box. And make sure to wash fresh produce and cook meat to a safe temperature, which for pork is at least 145°F.

 65.
But, Schulder says, the average person shouldn’t spend much time worrying about parasitic brain infections—particularly not rare ones like neurocysticercosis. “In a society where public health and public hygiene measures are typically taken, and we have a Food and Drug Administration that oversees production of food and how it’s made available to the public,” he says, brain-invading parasites shouldn’t be a major concern.

 88.

 89.
The color of our hair is created by the pigment-producing cells, called melanocytes, located in each hair follicle. In the process of generating the pigment for our hair, these cells also produce some other chemicals, one of which is hydrogen peroxide (yes, the stuff that bleaches your hair). When we’re young, our bodies also produce enzymes to neutralize that hydrogen peroxide and other free radicals so our hair keeps growing in with color. As we age, however, those neutralizing enzymes become less active than they once were, which means that hydrogen peroxide starts to build up and sap color from our hair, leaving it a lovely shade of gray—and, eventually, white, once the strand has lost all its pigment.

 90.
Although most gray is related to a natural part of the aging process, a significant environmental factor is UV exposure, which can accelerate hair aging. One study—on mice, not humans—demonstrated that not only did UV exposure produce gray hairs, but it also decreased the diameter of the hairs and shortened the shafts of the roots. To be more specific, exposure to UVA rays (those longer wavelengths) damages hair pigment, while UVB exposure (shorter wavelengths) damages hair proteins, specifically keratin. So sunlight, which carries both UVA and UVB, is a double-whammy for hair damage.

 91.
In addition to UV exposure, other lifestyle factors contribute to going gray, like smoking, anemia, poor nutrition, low B vitamins, and untreated thyroid conditions, says Hadley King, MD, a dermatologist based in New York City. Genetics can also play a role; if your parents went gray at a younger age, you probably will too.

 92.
One contributing factor that might be a bit more in our control is stress. Scientists found that the body’s “fight or flight” response can contribute to turning hair gray. Remember those pigment-producing cells, the melanocytes? When you’re under stress, you release a hormone called norepinephrine, which basically causes your body to go into overdrive—and burn through stem cells at a much faster rate. This means that, as your hair’s pigment-producing melanocytes die off (they typically live about 3 to 5 years), there aren’t enough active stem cells to replace them all… and some hair starts to grow in without pigment, i.e. turn gray.

 93.

Is reversing gray hair possible?

 94.

 95.
Maybe, especially if you’ve just discovered your first strands of silver. “We know that during periods of stress, individual hairs on your head can go gray. And then they’ll turn back once the stressor is removed,” says James O’Sullivan, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research associate in developmental biology and cell metabolism, who has been involved in research on the topic.

 118.

 119.
More than that, though, it’s how we’re wired. “We believe those who were sensitive to ostracism were at an evolutionary advantage,” Dr. Williams says. “If you were ousted, you were going to die. But if you could pick up on it quickly and change your behavior accordingly, your genes were going to continue on in the future.”

 120.
Adapting to avoid that fate might be why we still experience rejection like a punch to the gut—literally: “There’s overlap in the brain between physical pain and social pain,” Dr. Williams explains. “We use the same neural architecture to detect and experience both.” Even wilder, some research has shown that people feel better in the face of rejection when they pop acetaminophen first. (But Dr. Williams calls that more theoretically interesting than practically applicable—put down the Tylenol, please.)

 121.
Pain aside, the psychological effects of feeling excluded are no joke, either. “It threatens the need to belong,” Dr. Williams says. “It threatens the need to maintain a reasonably high self-esteem. It threatens the need to feel that you have control over your social situation. And it threatens your sense of being acknowledged and worthy of attention.”

 122.
All of those things are the building blocks of what Dr. Williams calls “meaningful existence.” In other words, uh, why wouldn’t you care?

 123.
How to soothe the sting of rejection

 124.
So what can you do about this inconvenient and (literally) painful experience? To short-circuit the sting altogether, not much, according to Dr. Williams: It’s a natural reaction that’s hard to override, he says. But you can get better at responding to the negative feelings that inevitably pop up.

 125.
In the moment, you can focus on making yourself feel better—or at least stopping yourself from stewing. That can look like concentrating on your breathing until the initial pain passes, distracting yourself with a good song or funny video, or reaching out to people (or animals) who do make you feel supported, says Dr. Williams.

 126.
If the feeling sticks around, you might need to examine it more closely. Asking yourself “What am I feeling and why?” tends to be a good place to start. Sure, you may be hurt because you weren’t invited to that dinner party, but you may also be: sad because you want to be friends with those people; annoyed because you think they forgot about you; inadequate because you assume there’s a personal reason why they didn’t include you—or any number of emotions for any number of reasons.

 127.
Once you zero in on the specifics, you’ll have more information on how best to address the problem or at least cope. Your feelings might be hinting at anything from “I assumed the host would’ve invited me—it’s probably time to check up on that friendship” to “Damn, I wish I knew more people who threw dinner parties. Maybe there’s a local group for that.”

 128.
Your overall mental health and coping skills make a big difference in how you weather the social pangs of daily life, too. “While people’s first response to feeling excluded is pretty uniformly negative, we do see individual differences in how quickly some people recover compared to others,” Dr. Williams says. For example, if you deal with depression or anxiety, you may be more likely to ruminate, which can make you feel worse, he explains. For that reason, he recommends bolstering foundational mental health skills like mindfulness, self-affirmation, emotional regulation, and resilience.

 129.
As for what not to do, Dr. Williams warns against a common reaction: Avoidance. It can be tempting to steer clear of social situations where you may feel left out, but that tends to make the problem worse. “What that means is you don’t put yourself out there,” Dr. Williams says. “You don’t allow others to reject you so you become more reclusive or at least less likely to be socially proactive.” And all that, in turn, can make you more sensitive to the whole feeling you were trying to avoid in the first place.

 130.
If all else fails, try finding solace in how universal it is to feel like the odd one out. “It’s a relief to know that we all find this painful,” Dr. Williams says. “It’s not a problem that you feel this way. It’s how you deal with it that makes a difference.”

 269.

 270.
(NEW YORK) — All dogs coming into the U.S. from other countries must be at least 6 months old and microchipped to help prevent the spread of rabies, according to new government rules published Wednesday.

 271.
The new rules require vaccination for dogs that have been in countries where rabies is common. The update applies to dogs brought in by breeders or rescue groups as well as pets traveling with their U.S. owners.

 272.
“This new regulation is going to address the current challenges that we’re facing,” said Emily Pieracci, a rabies expert at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention who was involved in drafting the updated regulations.

 273.
The CDC posted the new rules in the federal register on Wednesday. They take effect Aug. 1 when a temporary 2021 order expires. That order suspended bringing in dogs from more than 100 countries where rabies is still a problem.

 274.
The new rules require all dogs entering the U.S. to be at least 6 months, old enough to be vaccinated if required and for the shots to take effect; have a microchip placed under their skin with a code that can be used to verify rabies vaccination; and have completed a new CDC import form.

 275.
There may be additional restrictions and requirements based on where the dog was the previous six months, which may include blood testing from CDC-approved labs.

 276.
The CDC regulations were last updated in 1956, and a lot has changed, Pieracci said. More people travel internationally with their pets, and more rescue groups and breeders have set up overseas operations to meet the demand for pets, she said. Now, about 1 million dogs enter the U.S. each year.

 277.
Dogs were once common carriers of the rabies virus in the U.S. but the type that normally circulates in dogs was eliminated through vaccinations in the 1970s. The virus invades the central nervous system and is usually a fatal disease in animals and humans. It’s most commonly spread through a bite from an infected animal. There is no cure for it once symptoms begin.

 278.
Four rabid dogs have been identified entering the U.S. since 2015, and officials worried more might get through. CDC officials also were seeing an increase of incomplete or fraudulent rabies vaccination certificates and more puppies denied entry because they weren’t old enough to be fully vaccinated.

 279.
A draft version of the updated regulations last year drew a range of public comments.

 280.
Angela Passman, owner of a Dallas company that helps people move their pets internationally, supports the new rules. It can especially tricky for families that buy or adopt a dog while overseas and then try to bring it to the U.S., she said. The update means little change from how things have been handled in recent years, she said.

 281.
“It’s more work for the pet owner, but the end result is a good thing,” said Passman, who is a board member for the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association.

 282.
But Jennifer Skiff said some of the changes are unwarranted and too costly. She works for Animal Wellness Action, a Washington group focused on preventing animal cruelty that helps organizations import animals. She said those groups work with diplomats and military personnel who have had trouble meeting requirements, and was a reason some owners were forced to leave their dogs behind.

 306.
It’s also worth noting that if you smoke; have a substance use disorder, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol; or have a family history of heart problems, you’ve got a much higher chance of developing heart disease than someone who doesn’t fit that description, Frederick L. Ruberg, MD, the chief of cardiovascular medicine at Boston Medical Center, tells SELF.

 307.
2. You’re inexplicably dizzy or sometimes pass out.

 308.
When you faint, it usually means your brain is not getting enough blood flow, often because your blood pressure just plummeted. And repeatedly passing out for seemingly no reason is definitely not normal, Dr. Ruberg explains. While fainting at rest is the most tell-tale sign that a big health issue is at play, if you’re working out and constantly feel on the verge of passing out, that’s also a problem, Dr. Ruberg points out. “It’s normal to feel a little short of breath while exercising. It’s not normal to just lose consciousness if you really feel like you’re going to pass out when you’re exerting yourself.”

 309.
Still, you don’t have to fully collapse to suspect a heart issue. Feeling overwhelming dizziness while you’re at rest or moving can be cause for concern too, Dr. Ruberg says. But before you let your health anxiety run wild, keep in mind that a ton of other things can cause these symptoms, like vertigo, dehydration, low blood sugar, or an ear infection. So bring them up to your doc, especially if you’re dealing with other unusual symptoms.

 310.
3. You feel (some sort of) pressure in your upper body.

 311.
There’s a huge array of things that can cause a weighty, tight feeling in your upper torso—after all, it’s where your lungs, parts of your digestive tract, and heart all kind of squish together. However, chest pain tends to be a prominent sign that heart disease might be present, says Dr. Bart. “It signals that you’ve got a problem with your blood supply.”

 312.
Again, it can be hard to pinpoint where exactly the pressure stems from, but Dr. Bart tends to hear a few common phrases from her patients. “Some people describe it like an elephant sitting on their chest,” she says. “Others describe the pressure as much more subtle, or they’ll feel nothing at all. There’s a whole spectrum and everyone’s different.” You might also notice some pain radiating down your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back, or even liken the sensation to indigestion, per the American Heart Association.

 313.
You could also feel nauseous, puke, or break out in a cold sweat. So how can you tell if it’s your heart rather than a case of food poisoning? That can be really challenging, but Dr. Bart says that any sudden pain you can’t explain is worth bringing to a doctor—anything “not your usual,” she notes.

 314.
4. Your heartbeat skyrockets out of nowhere or you’re having unexplained panic attacks.

 315.
Your pulse can ramp up for any number of reasons—say, you’re out for a run, you guzzled a bunch of coffee, or your crush just sent you a spicy text. But if your heart seems to flutter uncontrollably at rest, or it’s not beating as steadily as it once did, an underlying heart issue might be at play. “Palpitations can feel like this thumping in your chest, and you can sense that your heart is beating irregularly,” Dr. Bart explains. “You might suddenly get dizzy and feel like you need to sit down.”

 414.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced new rules Wednesday aimed at preventing dogs with rabies from coming into the United States.

 415.
Under the new regulations, all dogs entering the U.S. must appear healthy, must be at least six months old, must have received a microchip, and the owner must verify the animal either has a valid rabies vaccine or has not been in a country where rabies is endemic in the last six months.

 416.
Dogs coming from a country that is considered at high risk for rabies and who received a rabies vaccine from another country must meet additional criteria. Those include getting a blood test before they leave the other country to make sure the animal has immunity against rabies, a physical examination upon arrival and getting a U.S. rabies vaccine. If the dog doesn’t have a blood test showing immunity, it must be quarantined for 28 days.

 419.
These are much stricter requirements than existing regulations for dog importation — for those who want to adopt from abroad and for those traveling internationally with their pets.

 428.
But, U.S pet owners shouldn’t panic, says Dr. Emily Pieracci, a CDC veterinary medicine officer. “This really isn’t a big change,” she says. “It sounds like a lot, but not when you break it down, it’s really not a huge inconvenience for pet owners.”

 429.
Rabies was eliminated in dogs in the United States in 2007, but unvaccinated canines can still contract the disease from rabid wildlife such as raccoons, skunks or bats.

 430.
And rabies remains one of the deadliest diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans around the world. Globally, about 59,000 people die from rabies each year. The illness is nearly always fatal once a person begins to experience symptoms.

 431.
Today, pet dogs in the United States are routinely vaccinated against rabies.

 432.
“This new regulation is really set to address the current challenges we’re facing,” Pieracci says. Those include an increased risk of disease “because of the large-scale international movement of dogs,” she adds, as well as fraudulent documentation for imported dogs.

 433.
The U.S. imports an estimated 1 million dogs each year. In 2021, amid a surge of pandemic-inspired dog adoptions, the CDC suspended importations from 113 countries where rabies is still endemic because of an increase in fraudulent rabies vaccination certificates. The countries include Kenya, Uganda, Brazil, Colombia, Russia, Vietnam, North Korea, Nepal, China and Syria.

 434.

 435.

 436.
That suspension will end when the new rules go into effect Aug. 1.

 437.
“This will bring us up to speed with the rest of the international community which already has measures in place to prevent the importation of of rapid dogs,” Pieracci said. “So, we’re playing catch-up in a sense.”

 438.
The new regulations replace rules that date back to 1956. Those rules only required that dogs be vaccinated before entering the country.

 447.
“As you can imagine a lot has changed since then,” Pieracci says. “International travel has increased dramatically and people’s relationships with dogs have changed since the 1950s. During that time, it really wasn’t common for dogs to be considered family member. They didn’t sleep in peoples’ beds. They certainly didn’t accompany them on international trips.”

 448.
The new rules won praise from the American Veterinary Medical Association. The organization “is pleased to see the implementation of this new rule that will help protect public health and positively impact canine health and welfare,” said Dr. Rena Carlson, president of the AVMA in a statement to NPR.

 449.
Dog rescue advocates also welcomed the changes.

 450.
“This updated regulation will allow us to continue bringing dogs to the U.S. safely and efficiently,” Lori Kalef, director of programs for SPCA International, said in a statement.

 451.
“We have seen that dogs have been a lifeline for U.S. service members during their deployments. One of our key programs reunites these service members and their animal companions here in the U.S. once they have returned home,” she said. “The CDC’s commitment to improving its regulations has a profound impact on the animals and service members we support, and this new policy is an important piece of that effort.”
