The study also predicts that 169 million deaths will be associated with drug-resistant infections by that year.

“These findings highlight that AMR has been a significant global health threat for decades and that this threat is growing,” said Mohsen Naghavi, a professor at the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation and the study’s author.

Read More: 25% of Antibiotic Prescriptions Are Unnecessary. Here’s Why That’s So Dangerous

AMR is becoming an especially large problem for the elderly. Adults above the age of 70 have experienced an over 80% increase in deaths attributed to AMR from 1990 to 2021, while deaths among children have decreased by more than 50%. All populations over the age of 25 experienced an increase in deaths attributable to antimicrobial resistance, the study found.

The Global Research on Antimicrobial Resistance (GRAM) Project carried out the study, which saw over 500 researchers collect and analyze data from 204 counties over a 30 year period, in what is the first global analysis of AMR trends. Based on that data, the researchers forecast that South Asia, Latin America, and the Caribbean will have the highest AMR mortality rates by 2050.

AMR occurs when microorganisms that cause disease such as bacteria, viruses, or fungi no longer respond to medicines used to treat them. Overuse and misuse of antimicrobials are the main drivers of AMR, according to the World Health Organization.

But millions of deaths could be averted via better prevention of infections, improved healthcare access, and new antibiotics, the GRAM study found.

The study’s results come ahead of a U.N. high-level meeting on AMR, which will convene in New York City on Sept. 24.

The FDA regulates pads and tampons as class I or II medical devices, and there’s no general law requiring ingredient disclosure for products in those categories, unlike food or cosmetics, Scranton explains. But a shift took place in October 2021, when a New York State law spotlighting pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period underwear went into effect; it called for “a plain and conspicuous printed list of all ingredients which shall be listed in order of predominance,” printed on or attached to the packaging. While it didn’t hit the federal level, the law had a “national impact,” marking a significant move toward transparency in the US, per a 2022 <a data-offer-url="https://womensvoices.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/label_report_period_products_ENGLISH_final.pdf" class="external-link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://womensvoices.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/label_report_period_products_ENGLISH_final.pdf"}" href="https://womensvoices.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/label_report_period_products_ENGLISH_final.pdf" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">WVE report investigating the ingredients disclosed on menstrual products.

Even before then, though, the tide was starting to turn. For instance, Playtex phased out its scented “Fresh Balance” tampons in 2020. Nicole M. Harris, the head of marketing at Edgewell Personal Care, tells SELF that while there’s still some demand for scented products, a lot of consumers have more nuanced views on fragrance: “Scent is, by and large, not something that women want to associate with products that are going in an intimate part,” she says. “So they want to take care of the odor but not through means of a perfume or an added fragrance… Added fragrance in feminine care products is not widely available or a growing space. If anything, it’s going the other direction.”

Biber agrees: “Everyone’s trending towards a ‘less is more’ approach.”

In fact, in November 2021, the official Tampax brand account <a data-offer-url="https://x.com/Tampax/status/1461756480370192391" class="external-link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://x.com/Tampax/status/1461756480370192391"}" href="https://x.com/Tampax/status/1461756480370192391" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">wrote in response to a tweet, “As of Spring 2021, we said goodbye to scented tampons and we no longer manufacture products that contain fragrance in the U.S.!” But while the brand’s Pearl Super Scented tampons are no longer available on the Tampax website, they are available in what appears to be the official Tampax store on Amazon US, as well as Kroger.com and Walmart.com. And P&G offers Always scented pads, which are currently available on its website. (A spokesperson from Proctor & Gamble, the parent company of Tampax, confirmed receipt of SELF’s detailed list of questions, including a question about whether or not Tampax still manufactures and/or sells scented period products in the US, but did not respond prior to publication.)

Around the same time Playtex stopped manufacturing its Fresh Balance tampons, it launched a line of products branded as “Odor Shield,” which claims to have “2X more odor protection” on its packaging. It isn’t branded as a scented product, but rather “an odor neutralizer,” Biber says. Similarly, she notes that certain Carefree pads also have “odor control” technology. “They’re unscented,” she says, “but to get at that odor control, if you were to open up the product, there would be a scent associated with that odor neutralizer.”

If you’re confused by this, that’s because it is confusing. The gist: Just because a product, including pads or tampons, is labeled “unscented” doesn’t necessarily mean it’s also “fragrance-free,” unless otherwise specified. To be truly fragrance-free, a product shouldn’t contain any fragranced materials or “masking scents” at all. As for the “unscented” label? That “means it doesn’t smell like anything; it doesn’t mean there’s no masking ingredient,” <a data-offer-url="https://www.instagram.com/thebeautysharkginger/?hl=en" class="external-link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.instagram.com/thebeautysharkginger/?hl=en"}" href="https://www.instagram.com/thebeautysharkginger/?hl=en" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Ginger King, MBA, a cosmetic chemist based in New Jersey, tells SELF. “If there’s a bad odor, you can use a [masking] ingredient to cover it so you don’t smell anything. It doesn’t mean it’s not fragranced.” Various chemicals have functions that aren’t necessarily “adding” scent to a product, she explains, but rather making one last or simply covering it up.

The everyday running shoe category is packed, and it’s one where legacy lines continue to jostle for the top spot with their newest and latest. Take the Adidas Ultraboost, which first hit shelves in 2015 as a “crossover hit of high-performance running and fashion,” and continued to hone its running chops in subsequent iterations.

Which brings us to the <a data-offer-url="https://www.adidas.com/us/ultraboost-5x-shoes/IH0638.html" class="external-link" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLink","outgoingURL":"https://www.adidas.com/us/ultraboost-5x-shoes/IH0638.html"}" href="https://www.adidas.com/us/ultraboost-5x-shoes/IH0638.html" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Adidas Ultraboost 5X ($180, adidas.com), a new running shoe that touts its “most energy return yet.” But is it really as springy as promised? I slipped on a pair to find out.

Who these shoes are for

While the Ultraboost line may have gotten its start as a lifestyley hybrid, the Ultraboost 5X is geared toward runners and a particular type of workout: the everyday run. That means it’s made with easy miles in mind, so things like comfort (it has higher cushioning packed with more, um, boost) and stability (there’s a molded external piece on the back of the heel for support) are likely going to take priority over features that promote high speed or quick pick-up.

Out of the box

The first thing I noticed? The stretchy, sock-like upper that I really enjoyed with the 2023 Ultraboost Lights is back with the 5X. Not only does this feature help with the fit (more on that below), but it creates a sleek, streamlined silhouette that looks pretty cool outside of your run too.

<cm-unit/>

The shoes were also lighter than I expected, which is always a nice surprise for kicks with a good deal of cushioning. And I loved the color too: The neon orange, pink, and gray along the stack gave a nice (but not-to-much) oomph to the white and gray upper.

Fit and feel

I actually got two sizes of the Ultraboost 5X to try, and I’m so glad I did. My normal running shoe size—a half size above what I wear for street shoes—felt way too big. When I tried the half-size down, there was no longer any slippage, so that was the pair I decided to take out and about. (While I go a half-size up in pretty much all of my running shoes, I wasn’t terribly surprised that the 5X fit kind of big for me—I had the same thing happen with the Ultraboost Lights, and needed to go down a half for those too).

What was it like to witness her two previously separate worlds—r.e.m. beauty and Wicked—come together? ”It was special and also kind of hilarious because since the last time I had seen my beauty team in person, I was completely bleach blonde and an entirely different human being,” says Grande.

That was on purpose. When creating her beauty look as Galinda—a collaborative effort between Grande, hair and makeup designer Frances Hannon, hairstylist Gabor Kerekes, and makeup artist Nuria Mbomio—it was “important to completely erase familiarity,” says Grande. “To look in the mirror and see someone else, and for people watching to see a character and not me.”

“We tried many different eyebrow shades, so many different toner concoctions,” says Grande. “And so many different wigs because they all tell different stories. I’ll never forget when we finally landed on the perfect combination. Our director, Jon M. Chu, was like, ‘That’s her.’”

So, yes, consider this official confirmation that Grande did not just cover up her naturally-dark brows for the film: She bleached them. And even though filming wrapped in January, she still is. “I actually am still bleaching them, but I’m toning them a little bit in between brown and blonde,” she says. “[I’ve got] sort of like gingery, strawberry blonde eyebrows right now, just because I really like it and I got very used to it.”

“When I see dark brows on me, I feel like I’m looking at an alien,” she continues. “It’s quite interesting… so 1726656997 I’m somewhere in the middle, but I plan to keep it up for quite some time. I’m doing it myself now. I have a little brow kit labeled ‘Galinda brow.’ I have a pink spoolie. It’s very fun.”

Today, her brows are complemented with a wash of duochrome eye shadow across her lids that shifts from pink to silver depending on the light—it’s “Save Me This Dance?” from the Ozdust Eyeshadow Palette ($55), Grande tells me. The shade names (like “Thrillifiying!” and “Darlingest”) are “all very specifically and Wicked-ly Ozian,” she says. “There’s lots of Galinda-ified language.”

According to a press release from the brand, the new supplement is supposed to “boost the body’s GLP-1 levels, reduce hunger, promote insulin sensitivity, and support healthy weight management.” The capsules are meant to be taken once daily for three to six months for best results, per the brand’s website.

These drugs are available only by prescription to treat conditions such as type 2 diabetes and obesity.

While Lemme’s new supplement has “GLP-1” in the name, it does not actually contain any of the synthetic hormone. So despite its clever marketing, it’s not an over-the-counter version of Ozempic (and because it’s a supplement and not a drug, it’s not as well-regulated by the FDA).
Here, we’ll dig into the research around the new supplement’s ingredients, what we know about their safety and efficacy, and whether it’s worth your money.

Ingredients in Lemme GLP-1 Daily

The main active ingredients in this supplement are lemon fruit extract (200 mg), saffron extract (176.5 mg), and red orange fruit extract (400 mg). All are herbs that have been used in traditional medicine practices. Here’s what research says about their effect on weight loss and GLP-1 levels.

Lemon fruit extract

Lemon fruit extract is a citrus flavonoid that comes from lemon juice and peel. There’s very limited research on the extract in humans, but here’s what we know so far: Last year, a double-blind, randomized controlled trial in Food Science & Nutrition found that Eriomin (a brand-name lemon fruit extract) had a moderately positive effect on gut flora, GLP-1 levels, and blood sugar. But this study was very small (only 30 people made it to the end of the 12-week period) and all participants had prediabetes—meaning we can’t say whether these positive results extend to people without prediabetes. It also makes no mention of how Eriomin affected participants’ appetite or weight.

Another July 2019 study in Phytotherapy Research found similar results, in that Eriomin slightly improved blood sugar and GLP-1 levels, but this study was also small (involving only about 100 people) and again only included people who had prediabetes.

Both studies only followed participants for 12 weeks, so we don’t know much about its long-term effects. This also means no safe or effective dosage has been established.

Saffron extract

Saffron is an antioxidant-rich spice that’s often used in holistic medicine for its purported benefits on sleep, mood issues, and inflammation, per a February 2022 article in Nutrients. The few studies that have looked at its effect on weight discovered little positive results.

While one older 2010 study in Nutrition Research suggests saffron extract may slightly reduce snacking when compared to a placebo, it did not cause significant weight loss. More current research also shows the extract has little to no effect on weight, BMI, or waist or hip circumference (though taking it did slightly decrease waist-to-hip ratio in some people), according to a July 2022 meta-analysis of 25 studies in Phytotherapy Research5.

Overall, there’s not enough evidence to show that saffron can help you lose weight or help control blood sugar.

Red orange fruit extract

The third main ingredient in Lemme GLP-1 Daily is red orange fruit extract, aka Morosil—an extract from Silician Moro blood oranges. It’s widely advertised as a natural supplement to help facilitate weight loss and reduce abdominal fat. But the studies examining its effects are mostly sponsored by companies selling the extract as a supplement, meaning there’s a potential for findings to be biased.

For example, one February 2022 double-blind, randomized controlled trial in Nutrients found participants with overweight who took Morosil for six months saw reduced BMI and improved body composition. More specifically, participants lost about 4.2 percent of their body weight, compared to 2.2 percent with the placebo. That said, this study was also small: Fewer than 200 people completed the full six months. And it was funded by Bionap—a company that sells Morosil—so there’s also a potential conflict of interest at play.

Another January 2015 randomized controlled trial in Natural Product Research had participants with overweight (who were otherwise healthy) take Morosil for 12 weeks. After four weeks, participants saw a significant reduction in BMI compared to the group who took a placebo.

That said, studies on Morosil have been small and short in duration. More research is needed to determine its long-term effects, safety, and ideal dosage.

It’s also important to note that no research has looked at the effects of combining these three ingredients, so we don’t know how they interact with one another.

Do these supplements actually work? (And are they safe?)

While there is some research to support that Eriomin and Morosil separately affect GLP-1 pathways and lead to slight weight loss, they’re not nearly as effective as traditional GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy, which have been proven in clinical trials to improve GLP-1 levels and promote significant weight loss in people with overweight, per a January 2022 trial in JAMA. There’s still a lot more research to be done on this supplement’s ingredients—including their efficacy, how they work when combined, and what’s considered a safe dosage.

One good thing to note: Lemme confirmed to Well+Good that its GLP-1 Daily supplements have been third-party tested by NSF (a reputable consumer goods testing organization). NSF certification ensures that what’s listed on the product label is actually in the supplement itself, and in the amounts claimed, without additional (potentially harmful) ingredients like heavy metals. This kind of testing, however, does not review the supplement’s safety or efficacy.

The bottom line

Ultimately, if you are considering taking a GLP-1 supplement for weight loss or to improve your blood sugar, start by talking with your doctor. They can determine whether a GLP-1 supplement is safe or right for you and possibly recommend other ways to manage your weight.

Meghan Garcia Webb, MD, previously told Well+Good that there are more effective strategies for weight and blood sugar management than taking a supplement, and those include:

In an art form that values how high your leg can go or how far backward you can bend, there was some truth to that. But probably not enough truth to justify just how much I was stretching: before dance class, during lulls in rehearsal, after dance class, at home watching television.

At some point, I learned I shouldn’t be holding all those static stretches before exercising or dancing. But my near-constant stretching continued—after the boutique fitness classes I took nearly every day, after every run, sometimes more at night—even as I mostly stopped dancing and my fitness goals changed: Rather than trying to be the best dancer I could be, I was just trying to be a healthy adult who could do the activities I loved (like running and hiking) without getting injured.

All that stretching wasn’t hurting anything, but as someone with no mobility issues and lots of natural flexibility, it probably wasn’t helping much either. I don’t necessarily blame myself for my stretching overkill: The post-workout stretch is so ubiquitous and so closely tied to the workout itself that it’s easy to think no session is complete without one—and that the more, the merrier.

There’s no arguing that stretching is a vital part of a well-rounded workout routine. But for active, healthy people exercising multiple times a week, skipping some of those post-workout stretches will probably do…absolutely nothing. As a matter of fact, stretching just two or three times a week is enough to maintain muscle integrity and joint range of motion, according to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM). And whether those sessions happen after a workout or some other time in your day makes little to no difference.

But stretching is only becoming more popular, not just as a workout add-on but as an activity of its own, with stretching studios and classes proliferating over the past several years. A couple minutes of scrolling on fitness influencer Instagram might even have you think that the right stretching routine is the key to curing all your aches and pains or finally “hacking” your recovery.

In reality, stretching is important, but not magical, and we only need a little of it to reap its benefits. So why do we have so much stretching guilt?

Why we stretch to begin with

The purpose of stretching is to help our bodies move better. How, exactly, stretching does that depends on what kind of stretching you’re doing, says Heather Milton, RCEP, CSCS, an exercise physiologist at NYU Langone’s Sports Performance Center.

Dynamic stretches, like shoulder circles or leg swings, involve moving through a joint’s range of motion, she says. We typically do dynamic stretches as part of a warmup prior to working out “so we have full range of motion to move when we’re doing that activity,” Milton says. “[Stretching] activates muscles and helps lubricate the joints and increase our body temperature, which allows us to do that activity with more ease.”

Static stretches are what most of us think of when we think of stretching: reaching down to touch your toes to stretch your hamstrings or hanging out in a low lunge to stretch your hip flexors. “It’s pushing to a point where the muscle is on a stretch, which is typically closer to the end range for that joint, and holding that position,” Milton says. “We’re telling the nerves that contract the muscle to quiet down by holding that position for a more prolonged period of time.”

Static stretching is more about maintaining or increasing long-term flexibility, whether our muscles are tight due to lots of repetitive exercise, from sitting for long periods of time, or just from getting older.

In simpler terms, stretching improves flexibility and mobility, which allows our bodies to have access to their full range of motion. “When we don’t have that, we run into problems,” says exercise physiologist Tom Holland, CSCS, CISSN.

One of those problems could be compensatory injuries, where one part of your body has to overcompensate for another’s tightness or lack of mobility, according to Holland. “That leads you to do your activities of daily living and your exercise in a way that’s not natural,” he says. “Your muscles aren’t going to fire the way they should, and that’s where we get hurt—and not necessarily in the place where you’re tight.”

Stretching vs. warming up vs. cooling down

Stretching, warming up, and cooling down all play a role in optimizing our exercise routines and keeping us as injury-free as possible. But the three are often conflated with one another, leading to some of the confusion many of us have about when we should stretch—and why.

Case in point: Show up to any local 5K race, and you’ll probably see runners leaning up against a tree to stretch their calves with the intention of “warming up.” But as Milton points out, not only do the static stretches that are still so commonly done pre-exercise don’t warm your body at all (because, by definition, you’re not moving while you’re doing them). But studies have shown1 that holding static stretches can temporarily reduce our muscles’ strength and power by 10 percent or more, and may even predispose us to injury when done pre-workout.

An actually-effective warmup involves dynamic stretches geared toward the specific activity you’re going to do, and gentle cardio like jumping jacks or butt kicks. “The purpose of the warmup is to get the blood flowing and raise the core temperature,” Holland says. “It’s low-level aerobic activity that gets your body ready.”

Warming up is “basically moving slowly from a rested state to an exercise state,” Milton says. “The cooldown is the reverse of that.”

For many of us, it’s the cooldown that’s long been synonymous with stretching when, really, it’s all about “moving from a highly sympathetic active state—when your body is under the good stress of exercise and your sympathetic nervous system is turned on and your heart rate is up—toward a parasympathetic state—slowing down the heart rate and the respiratory rate,” Milton says. “We want to move away from that sympathetic state at the end of a workout in order to move toward recovery.”

Could some static stretches be part of that post-workout cooldown? Absolutely. But do they have to be? Not really. Your cooldown could instead be some breathing exercises, a post-workout meditation, or a post-run walk—whatever is going to downregulate your nervous system and help you transition out of exercise mode.

“Everyone tends to do a lot of something a little bit when we’re supposed to do a little bit a lot.” —Tom Holland, CSCS, CISSN

What stretching can—and can’t—do

That said, it does make sense to get your stretching done post-workout, considering it’s best to stretch when your body is already warm. But it’s more about efficiency than efficacy because there’s no evidence to suggest doing your stretches immediately following a workout is any more effective than doing your stretches, say, later that day while you’re watching Love Island, says Gregory Rubin, DO, a sports medicine physician at the Hospital for Special Surgery at Naples Comprehensive Health.

“You’re not preventing any injuries by doing it right after,” Dr. Rubin says. It’s not affecting your recovery, nor will it affect whether you experience delayed onset muscle soreness, or even if you get overuse injuries2 from activities like running. “There’s no clear tie between stretching and athletic performance,” he says.

What stretching can do is help prevent those injuries and pain points that stem from overly tight muscles or lack of mobility, such as hamstring strains or lower back pain. Just don’t make the mistake of thinking stretching will be the fix to anything that feels tight or painful, says Ari Kaplan, PT, DPT, a physical therapist at ATI Physical Therapy. Sometimes we’re tight because our body is trying to protect itself in response to another issue, one that likely can’t be fixed with stretching.

“Anytime we have something where we stretch it and we’re not gaining motion or long-term relief, that often indicates that there’s something else going on,” he says, such as a postural problem or an overactive muscle.

How much should you *really* be stretching—and when?

When I look back on why I used to stretch so much, I realize I had the misconception that being more flexible would somehow make me a healthier, fitter person overall.

But in reality, unless your sport or activity demands some specific hypermobility (like ballet, gymnastics, or pitching for baseball), we really only need as much flexibility as supports our natural range of motion. When you push for mobility that goes further than that, you can injure yourself because, at a certain point, “it’s not just muscle flexibility that may be limiting you,” Milton says. “It’s joint mobility—and that’s okay.”

Being very flexible comes with its own issues, after all. “With mobility comes susceptibility to injury,” Holland says. “The more mobile a joint is, the greater the likelihood of injury.” And at some point, the flexibility of a muscle begins to compromise its strength. “You can lengthen the muscle to the point that you may actually lose some power,” Dr. Rubin says. “You can tip the scales of your athletic performance.”

So how much—and when—should you really be stretching? When it comes to dynamic stretches, consider them a must as part of your warmup every time you work out or play a sport, Milton says.

For static stretches, as long as you don’t have any mobility issues or injuries, incorporate them into your routine a few times a week—whether that’s after a workout or some other time. (Just make sure your body isn’t cold when you do them.) Holding stretches between 15 and 30 seconds is plenty, according3 to numerous4 studies5, and stretching all your major muscle groups shouldn’t take you more than a few minutes.

Stretch only to the point of mild discomfort, not pain. If you’re holding your breath, you’ve probably gone too far, Milton says. Remember: As long as you don’t have any significant joint or muscle tightness, stretching can just be about maintaining the mobility you already have, she says.

“Everyone tends to do a lot of something a little bit when we’re supposed to do a little bit a lot,” Holland says. “It’s way more simple than people make it out to be.”

A family drama dipped in southern charm and served with a saucy side of romance, Hallmark’s The Chicken Sisters is an eight-part original series based on the NY Times best-seller of the same name and Reese’s Book Club selection penned by KJ Dell’Antonia. Headlined by a stellar cast of women—Schuyler Fisk, Genevieve Angelson, Lea Thompson and Wendie Malick—the show is set in the fictional town of Merinac, where a generations-old rift between dueling fried chicken restaurants leaves the founders’ families fractured and the locals taking sides. (New episodes are available to stream every Thursday on Hallmark+.) We recently caught up with Fisk to talk about working with friends and the best beauty advice her mom, Sissy Spacek, has shared.

What was the best thing about working on The Chicken Sisters?

Well, first of all, it was such a gift to work on a show that is so smart and funny and well-written. From the start, I knew that I was in really good hands with our creative team, helmed by the brilliant Annie Mebane, which allowed me to relax and enjoy the collaboration. Speaking of collaboration, it was so much fun to work with Genevieve, Lea and Wendie. We worked intense, long days for an extended stretch of time. And we all bonded and developed a real trust and friendship. It sort of felt like we were all at summer camp together. I also loved getting time over the course of the season to really sink into Amanda and to explore different sides of her.

Do you have any beauty or glam secrets to share from on-set?

Our hair and makeup team on the show was amazing. The makeup trailer was always everyone’s favorite place to be. Cindy Barlow, our makeup department head, used a lot of products on me that I also use in real life. My ride or dies would have to be Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions Mascara ($26) for lashes that are full and gorgeous but also that stay put and never bleed! and Buxom’s Power-Full Plump Lip Balm in “Big-O” ($20) for the most perfect pinky lip stain. It goes on clear but somehow gives your lips exactly the color they need. I’ve never gotten more compliments on a lip color than this!

What are some of your all-time favorite beauty products?

I use, and love, Mad Hippie’s vitamin C serum ($34). On top of that, I use One-Skin’s OS-01 face lotion ($120). I love an oil cleanser and my favorite one is Living Libations Best Skin Ever ($32). For body, I love the Uni Body Serum ($43). The smell is sooooo good. I also have really become a fan of Dieux’s Forever Eye Mask ($25). They are reusable silicone eye patches that you use over your own eye cream. They work so well and I love that I can reuse them. I used them every morning filming the show. Also, I love Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Vanish Color Corrector ($32) in Fair. I used this on the show and in my real life when I’m especially tired. It is truly magic!

What is some of the best advice your mom ever gave you?

My mom has always told me to remember that “you meet the same people on the way up that you do on the way down.” Being kind to everyone is a big thing for her. Anytime she encounters someone extra gruff in life, her mission is to find something wonderful about them and to make sure they know she recognizes it. She usually becomes good pals with everyone on a set.

As far as skin care, the best advice she’s given me is to “always use sunscreen” and to “never forget your neck.” My mom also told me that I never have to feel pressured into wearing foundation—on camera or off. Both my mother’s skin and my own has a lot of freckles. Covering it up with anything too full-coverage makes us look so different and not like us. We both like to keep our beauty routine very simple, natural and light.

Are there any beauty traditions your mom passed down to you?

I clearly remember watching my mom do her nightly skin-care routine when I was a kid. She prioritized it. And she never, ever skipped washing and moisturizing her face. She has always taken great care of her skin.

We still share and talk about products all the time. We love products that are clean. She’s been a fan of the brand Mad Hippie for years now and got me hooked on their vitamin C serum. We love to try out different sunscreens. Currently, we both use and love Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen ($22).

You’ve been involved with a lot of different industries—music, acting and more—are there any other fields of work you’d love to get into?

I love the arts so much and the collaborative nature of it all. I love the idea of dipping my toe into the theater world in the future, especially musical theater. I’m also super interested in design and always have been. My dad is a production designer and artist and growing up I’d watch him create these worlds for films, and it’s always been so inspiring to me. Design is a passion of mine as well, and I especially love when form meets function. If you leave me unattended for too long in your home, you may return to find me rearranging your furniture or organizing your cabinets!

That doesn’t mean you have to stick to a traditional breakfast, lunch, and dinner arrangement, she notes. Study how your appetite or hunger cues fluctuate throughout the day and over the course of about a week. If you notice your appetite is most active in the mornings, lean into that craving and schedule your biggest meal then, Morin says. Or maybe you have a hard time tolerating heavier meals, so you can plan to munch on smaller snacks throughout the day.

3. Try nutrient-dense smoothies, drinks, or soups.

If you just can’t bring yourself to eat solid food, consider whipping up a smoothie, a hearty bowl of soup, or other foods that slide down easy. Morin says it can help you feel full faster and longer and “pack a punch of calories for a small volume.” She suggests adding some olive oil or cream to your soups for healthy fats, and tossing nut butter or spinach in your smoothies for protein and vitamins.

If the foods you can stomach aren’t necessarily all-stars in the nutrition department or you’re trying to get more variety, you can try mixing nutritious options with your palatable foods, Morin says, like sprinkling fruit over yogurt (or ice cream!). You can also buy pre-made protein shakes or nutritional supplement drinks like Boost and Ensure if they go down easier and you want to save energy by skipping the food prep step.

And don’t sleep on a bowl of creamy mashed potatoes! Spuds are high in vitamin C and potassium and are considered a “complete protein,” which means they contain all nine essential amino acids that your body can’t produce on its own. (If you make it a sweet potato, you get some vitamin A too.) So in addition to being fairly cheap and easy to prepare, they can do a lot for you nutritionally.

4. Opt for cold or room temperature foods.

Sometimes your medication-induced nausea can make your mouth water in that I’m about to barf kind of way. In this case, a big ol’ plate of warm steak and mashed potatoes that’s wafting strong notes of butter and garlic may only lessen the odds you eat anything. So instead, go for cold or room-temperature foods, Garcia recommends, because they’re less likely to have potent smells that might turn you off.

Cheese and veggies like carrots or celery sticks are solid options that are easy to pick at with your hands, don’t need to be prepared, and offer a nice boost of protein, calcium, and vitamins, Garcia says. Dry cereal is another good option because it tends to be fortified with the nutrients you need and won’t force any unwanted scents up your nose.

5. Drink fluids throughout the day—but not too much.

Hydration is always key to staying healthy and just feeling good overall, but if you’re dealing with a funky appetite, you’ll want to be extra mindful about drinking enough water—just don’t overdo it. That’s because dehydration can shrivel your appetite even more, but drinking too much all at once or too close to mealtimes stretches the walls of your stomach, which sends “I’m full” messages to your brain, Morin says. So maybe take a few days to log your water intake and reflect on how it’s affecting your appetite; you might be able to pick up on patterns that can help boost your desire to get some food in your system. You can also try snacking on hydrating foods like watermelon as opposed to things like salty chips, which may prompt you to quench your thirst a little too rapidly.

6. Make mealtimes enjoyable.

Family dinners and brunch with your friends should stay on the menu, even if you can’t bring the appetite you once had. In fact, more (hopefully fun!) social gatherings that are centered around food might give your appetite a boost, Morin says. Research shows that people who eat with others tend to consume more compared to when they’re dining alone because you’re more likely to share food or feel more relaxed and joyful in these scenarios. That said, it can be a little awkward to stare at others chomping on their meal without doing the same. So maybe start with at least one social meal a week, Morin suggests, and see what it does to your food intake.
