182.

To state the obvious, the media is more important to free speech and public debate than a football club or a nuclear power station

There is a tendency in some leftish quarters to quietly enjoy the agonies of the Telegraph and the Spectator as they contemplate the possibility of being owned by a fund controlled by the United Arab Emirates. It’s a bit rich, this line of thinking goes, for the titles – and others with hopes of bagging the loose assets – to be fussy about ownership or the operation of a free market.

Aren’t they part of the unlovely over-representation in UK medialand of non-doms and foreign and domestic billionaires? If the UAE is deemed a suitable owner of Manchester City and, possibly, a slice of Sizewell C, why not trust its assurances that it’ll be a passive operator in the UK and won’t try to throttle free expression as it does at home?

 424.

A meticulously reported story of power, politics and feuding at the heart of a British media empire

Endless column inches have been filled with comparisons between the recently concluded HBO series Succession and the real-life dynastic struggles of the Murdoch clan. But for seasoned media-watchers, there has been a far more dramatic generational handover taking place, and it involves the empire once owned by David and Frederick Barclay.

It’s the story of these twins and the business they built that Jane Martinson tells in You May Never See Us Again. Martinson is a former media editor of the Guardian, now professor of financial journalism at City, University of London (for transparency, I should say that we have been colleagues at both institutions).

 471.
Why own a newspaper in 2023? Ask the very rich men trying to buy the Telegraph | Jane Martinson

 472.

 473.

With debts of £1bn, this isn’t some ordinary financial asset. The desire to own the papers says more about power than profit

So much has changed in the generation since the Telegraph newspapers and the Spectator magazine were last put up for sale in 2004, including how much money they make. Yet one constant remains: the desire of very rich men to own them.

At least a dozen bidders have emerged as potential buyers in an auction meant to kick off this week, while the most recent owners have just come up with an audacious plan to win back control from Lloyds bank. This desire says a lot more about power than profit, and even more about modern Britain.

Jane Martinson is a Guardian columnist. Her latest book is You May Never See Us Again, The Barclay Dynasty: A Story of Survival, Secrecy and Succession (Penguin Business, £25)
