108.
ISBER 2024 Annual Meeting: Dreaming Beyond Barriers—The Future of Biobanking

  109.

  110.

  111.

ISBER would like to present ISBER Program Co-Chairs, Cassandra Griffin, Gregory Grossman and Amanda Moors' article on ISBER 2024 Annual Meeting: Dreaming Beyond Barriers—The Future of Biobanking

  112.
The International Society of Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) Annual Meeting (https://www.isber.org/page/2024Annual) is recognized as the premier event in the field of biobanking. Delegates from around the world meet to network, learn,
  113. share their expertise, experience, and progress—contributing to the advancement of biospecimen science. This year, the global biobanking community will convene in Melbourne, Australia, April 8–12. Themed “Dreaming Beyond Barriers: The Future of Biobanking,”
  114. this meeting will reflect upon and celebrate the impact of the biobanking community, its innovation and resilience in overcoming barriers, and shared dreams for the future. This annual meeting will also celebrate the 25th anniversary of ISBER, honoring
  115. its pioneers and impact, with a look toward the pivotal role that ISBER will play in building the future.

  116.
Biobanking is a multidisciplinary field and covers many domains from biomedical and pharmaceutical innovation to agricultural enrichment and environmental conservation. The field of biobanking is evolving as rapid changes in technologies, regulations,
  117. and stakeholder needs affect our discipline. Staying abreast of the latest advances and changes is critical to assure a repository's sustainability, relevance, impact, and utilization. As a leader in the field, ISBER is committed to keeping its members
  118. not only informed in this changing landscape but also empowering them to be drivers and innovators of positive change. ISBER's commitment here can be seen in the newly published fifth edition of the ISBER Best Practices (https://www.isber.org/page/BPR),
  119. which members will have the opportunity to learn more about at the meeting. Coming together as a community at this meeting allows us to collaboratively build and shape the future.

  120.
On a global scale, we are now, more than ever, facing new challenges arising from the impact of communicable disease, aging populations, environmental instability, political unrest, resource scarcity, and questions around the social and ethical applications
  121. of new technologies. As leaders and stakeholders, we have a critical role to play in devising strategies to address these challenges and with new challenges come the need for insight and innovation—the transformation of dreams to reality. In Indigenous
  122. Australian culture, the Dreaming or Dreamtime embraces the integration of the past, present, and future. It provides a holistic way of life, a moral code, and rules for interacting with each other and the natural environment. With this ethos of collaboration
  123. and unity, our community can Dream Beyond the Barriers imposed by the past, explore the challenges of the present, and harness opportunity for a harmonized global approach to the future of biobanking and biospecimen science.

  124.
Our host city, Melbourne, is a vibrant metropolis of art, culture, and innovation—a “foodie” and coffee lover's paradise. It presents thriving scientific, medical, and conservation research sectors, driven in partnership with robust and integrated industry
  125. support. A truly global city with a multicultural population and proud indigenous history, its spirit of partnership and collaboration makes it a prime location to reunite with old friends and foster new relationships. We will begin the conference
  126. with a Welcome to Country ceremony by members of the indigenous community, honoring the land and its connection to people and culture.

  127.
We have developed a rich program with symposia covering topics such as biobanking for personalized medicine, environmentally conscious biobanking, social and human factors, Rising Stars in Biobanking, and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence
  128. and blockchain. The meeting will feature international speakers, posters, interactive workshops, and round table discussions. Supported by a strong industry and trade presence who maintains a commitment of collaboration with ISBER, it's sure to be
  129. a melting pot of ideas, opportunities, and solutions—a biobanker's dream! The in-person meeting will be held from April 8–12, and with social events including speed-networking, fun runs, site visits, and a 25th anniversary soiree celebration, this
  130. event is one not to be missed! For those unable to attend the in-person meeting, the virtual meeting will run from May 28–29, featuring highlights from the Melbourne event and further opportunities for engagement.

  131.
On behalf of the ISBER 2024 Chairs, Cassandra Griffin (Australia), Dr. Gregory Grossman (USA), and Amanda Moors (USA), along with the Program Taskforce and Local Engagement Taskforce, we welcome you to join us at the ISBER Annual Meeting 2024 in Melbourne,
  132. Australia!

  161.
ISBER would like to present the following ISBER Corner article on, The Experts Speak: Challenges in Banking Brain Tissue for Research to our membership, by A. Rush, C. Weil, L. Siminoff, C. Griffin, C.L. Paul, A. Mahadevan and G. Sutherland.

The acute shortage of human brain tissue to fuel the research that scientists, clinicians, and patient advocates say is necessary to advance the treatment of neurogenerative diseases is slowing scientific discovery. Brain biobanks play an essential role in accelerating the development of innovative neurotechnologies, yet remain limited in numbers, and narrow in their scope and the distribution of samples. Biobanking whole brains shares many common activities with the broader field of human tissue biobanking. Although both streams of biobanking ultimately aim to facilitate health and medical research, some aspects of brain banking are unique. These particularities of brain donation and banking present unique challenges for internal and external brain banking stakeholders.

First, whole brains are not able to be collected or stored through the same clinical pathway as other biobankable tissue, for example, remnants from surgical cancer removal, as specialist postmortem expertise and facilities are required for retrieval. This has both practical and governance implications for brain banks, affecting their ability to facilitate and access brains. To the public, the whole brain can be perceived as special or different than other bodily organs and tissue for potential donation for research. This can impact on the choice to participate in brain donation programs, particularly as the final choice to consent is generally reliant on third party family members. Finally, from a researcher perspective, the human brain displays greater functional and cellular heterogeneity, and more complex neural pathways relative to lower mammal brains. These characteristics can render alternative experimental resources less desirable and create a greater demand for whole brains.

We asked four brain banking experts to discuss their perspective on the same question: What are the most pressing challenges for brain banking in the current health and medical research landscape?

Please click the following link to view the article:
https://www.liebertpub.com/doi/10.1089/bio.2024.29135.ajr

  225.

Please join us for a virtual program on Friday, March 3, 12:30 Japan Time (11:30 – 2:30 pm Singapore Time; Thursday, March 2 7:30 pm Pacific Time) entitled "Discussing the International Use of Biospecimens and Associated Data".

  226.
This will be an open forum discussion about the Asia Pacific landscape governing the access and sharing of biospecimens and associated data. We will be discussing the variable infrastructure for and familiarity with biobanking across the region and explore the importance of diversity within and representativeness of biospecimen collections. The event is free and open to all interested in promoting the sharing of biospecimens and data in an ethically and socially responsible way.

  227.
Why?

  228.
Despite national and international efforts to come together on recommendations that would ensure diverse, well-characterized samples are collected, handled, used, and shared in ways that consider and secure the patients' rights while also allowing for research and innovation to flourish, the current environment is complex for both patients and researchers to navigate.

  229.
With this forum, we are aiming to convene individuals from across the Asia Pacific region who can help us explore the challenge from a broad range of perspectives with the goal of understanding the current status and identifying a path towards strengthening global research with biospecimens in an ethical and socially responsible way.

  239.

ISBER would like to present ISBER President, Clare Alloca's article on, Priorities and Future of the ISBER Standards Community of Practice and Pediatric Special Interest Group to our membership!

  240.

  241.
A key driver for ISBER's structural evolution is our desire to provide increased opportunities for engagement. As an introduction to some of these opportunities, a series of town halls is describing the objectives and plans for selected communities of
  242. practice (CoPs), working groups (WGs), and special interest groups (SIGs). The first of these town halls was held on December 13, 2022. Hosted by the ISBER Board of Directors (BOD), this first town hall addressed the work of the standards CoPs and
  243. the pediatric SIG. We wanted the membership to understand the priorities of each group and some of the new initiatives that are under development.

  244.
The town hall began with an introduction from Clare Allocca, president of the BOD, who noted that ISBER continues to support the biobanking community through its technical groups—CoPs, SIGs, and WGs. It is intended that the combination of these group
  245. types offers an array of fora for discussions, networking, idea incubation, education, and product development. The first presentation of this town hall would describe a CoP: standards.

  316.
ISBER 2022 Annual Meeting: Biobanking—Shaping the Scientific Journey

  317.

  319.

Article By: Emma Snapes, Dayong Gao, Anusha Hettiaratchi, William Schlief and Birendra Kumar Yadav

  320.

  321.
Biobanking is increasingly recognized as intrinsic for accelerating the scientific journey. At this year's ISBER annual meeting, our first ever hybrid meeting and first in-person event since 2019, educational sessions and activities focused on how to help build a new understanding of the biobanking landscape and contribute to a strong vision for the future.

  322.
The in-person portion of the meeting welcomed 405 delegates to Atlanta, USA. The program featured a total of 50 talks, 63 poster presentations, 39 exhibitors, 14 workshops, and 17 roundtable discussions. Many delegates noted how nice it was to finally get together in person after three years of virtual events.

  323.
The virtual portion of the meeting was hosted subsequent to the in-person meeting and welcomed an additional 157 individuals. The virtual portion enabled individuals who were unable to travel to watch the educational sessions, participate in discussions, view the poster presentations, and visit with exhibitors. With concerns regarding climate change and other global issues, our members can expect ISBER's hybrid meeting model to continue to provide greater global access to our educational activities.

  324.
In total, the annual meeting welcomed 552 individuals from 45 countries, continuing ISBER's 20-year reputation as the premier global biobanking event. Thank you to our cochairs Emma Snapes, Billy Schleif, and Rohit Gupta for leading the planning of such an excellent event, and the ISBER 2022 Scientific Program Committee for their contributions and expertise.

  325.
As biobanking continues to shape the scientific journey in a new world, we hope you will join us at our next annual meeting from May 3–6, 2023 in Seattle, USA either in person or virtually. As with every year, the meeting will bring together biobanking practitioners and leaders from all over the world, providing opportunities for academia, industry, pharma, and government agencies to learn, connect, discuss, and collaborate.

  333.
ISBER Launches New Biobank Assessment Tool!

  334.

  335.

  336.
Vancouver—October 3, 2022— The International Society for Biological and Environmental Repositories (ISBER) announces the release of the updated ISBER Biobank Assessment Tool (BAT), available at https://www.isber.org/page/BAT.

Previously known as the ISBER Self-Assessment Tool, the new BAT provides biobanks the ability to improve their practice by assessing their procedures compared to the ISBER Best Practices. Upon completion, the biobank will receive an individual report to learn where they align with Best Practices and where they have opportunities for improvement. This tool is ideal for biobanks who want to analyse how successfully they have implemented the ISBER Best Practices.

“ISBER’s goal to bring standards of practice to biobanks around the world has been advanced through the Biobank Assessment Tool. Our recent rebuild of the tool brings in the current ISBER Best Practices, reinforcing our commitment to enabling biobanks to undergo continual improvement, growth, and effective facilitation of research. I am delighted to say that the BAT tool is available to all ISBER members and encourage its use in biobanking facilities” said Ms. Clare Allocca, President of the Board, ISBER.

“More biobanks are now working towards implementing a quality management system, for example the ISO 20387—BAT is helpful as a tool to follow up on key indicators since it can be used repeatedly,” said Ms. Karolin Bergenstråhle, who led the development of the tool.

The BAT will meet the needs of biobankers. “ISBER Best Practices are a key tool to increase the quality of modern biobanking,” said Ms. Mieke De Wilde, Chair of ISBER’s Standards Advisory Committee. “By using BAT, biobankers can identify gaps that need to be addressed while implementing ISBER Best Practices”.

The assessment is confidential and aimed at helping biobanks and biobankers strengthen their practices through the identification of areas in need of improvement. The updated tool will be live and available October 3, 2022.
