41.
An important message that businesses learned during the pandemic was that nothing should be taken for granted. Actions that they had performed for years on end, like being allowed to trade at normal hours and having a fully staffed office were no longer a given, and organisations across Australia were required to find innovative ways of conducting business amidst myriad COVID restrictions. Companies had to adjust their operations to both meet their compliance obligations and provide customers with an assurance that it was safe to do business with them. An important way that businesses worked at overcoming this challenge was by adopting clear, structured processes. Particularly, the ISO 45001 Occupational Health and Safety Standards helped businesses across Australia achieve and maintain work health and safety goals, reduce costs, and continue to meet customer demands, and businesses yet to certify to it should look to do so by early 2022.

 42.
ISO 45001 helps businesses be proactive

 43.
The ISO 45001:2018 OH&S Standards is an internationally recognised Business Management System that helps companies across the world develop and maintain an Occupational Health and Safety Management System, and proven successful WHS strategies. It replaced the OHSAS 18001 Standards, distinguishing itself by adopting a proactive approach to achieving and maintaining compliant OH&S practices.

 44.
While OHSAS 18001 focused on controlling identified workplace risks, ISO 45001 places a firm emphasis on identifying potential risks before they can impact staff, thereby preventing workplace injuries and accidents from occurring.

 45.
The past two years have been extremely challenging for businesses, and companies across Australia are hoping that 2022 will be a more productive, less stressful year for their operations. By certifying to ISO 45001, companies advance from the ‘hoping’ to the ‘doing’ stage, by taking straight-forward action to prepare their business for 2022, ensuring they are in the best position to deal with any challenges they may encounter.

 46.
Some ways that ISO 45001 can help companies

 47.
How ISO 45001 certification helps your business achieve its WHS goals will depend upon several factors, including its industry, size, work type, and so on. However, it is important to note that these Standards can be applied to all businesses, regardless of whether they are a family run store operating from a single location, or a national corporation with offices across Australia.

 48.
Some of the ways ISO 45001 can help organisations include:

 49.

 50.
Minimising operational expenses: ISO 45001 helps businesses understand, meet, and maintain the scope of their OH&S obligations. Through the heightened safety focus that certification brings there will be fewer workplace injuries and increased productivity, both of which will help reduce the company’s overall expenses.

 51.
Increased employee engagement: Another advantage to certification is utilising its top-down approach to developing compliant WHS practices. This means that all staff will be involved in the development and maintenance of the business’ OH&S practices, from senior management to floor staff. All employees will be trained on their role and responsibility when it comes to WHS practices, and what they need to do in the event of an incident.

 52.
Strengthen the confidence of stakeholders and develop new growth opportunities: By certifying to ISO 45001 organisations are proving that they are committed to compliant WHS practices. This can reassure existing stakeholders and customers that they should continue to deal with your company, while also leading to new growth opportunities. Lots of organisations that are 45001 certified want an assurance that their trading partners comply with the same Standards. Through certification, your business is demonstrating that it is committed to maintaining compliant WHS practices, which mitigates concerns from businesses who may be reluctant to work with uncertified organisations.

 53.

 54.
Begin 2022 in a strong, safe position

 55.
While luck can certainly play a part in good fortune, most successful businesses achieved their goals through a combination of hard work, preparation, and determination. It is about identifying clear operational goals, and then working to achieve them.

 56.
Businesses that want to ensure 2022 is a safe year for their staff, and a productive one for the operations, should start preparing. By implementing these Standards, companies will be in a stable position for beginning the new year, as they will have straight-forward processes in place for preventing and managing WHS risks.

 57.
Reading this blog has probably left you with some questions about how these Standards can be specifically tailored to your operations, how long the process takes, how it can be done with minimal operational disruption, and so on. Please contact our Health and Safety consultants today by filling out this online contact us form, or by calling them for a short, no-obligation consultation. Simply tell them a bit about your company, including information about its industry, work type, and location, and they can discuss with you how these Standards could be implemented across your workplace to help it realise its operational goals. Wouldn’t you agree that idea doesn’t sound risky?

 80.
Please click here to contact us for more information.

 81.
With 2020 and ’21 being two of the most challenging years for organisations in recent memory, many companies are committed to making 2022 a great year for their business, and firmly putting the past behind them. One of the ways businesses are working to achieve this is by demonstrating that their worksites remain are a safe space for staff, customers, and all onsite visitors. This kind of reassurance goes a long way towards reassuring potential customers, who may be mindful of the steps businesses are taking to guarantee their safety whilst onsite. Therefore, a great way to greet 2022 is with a commitment to safe, compliant working practices, by implementing a certified Occupational Health and Safety Management System. Doing so helps businesses show that they are facing the future with a commitment to compliant safety standards.

 82.
ISO 45001:2018 is a business work health and safety system

 83.
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 45001 OH&S Standards is the most recent internationally recognised Business Management System that is committed to helping organisations develop compliant work health and safety practices that meet a world-class standard.

 84.
With Australian cities finally moving out of lockdowns, businesses committing to getting things back to as close to ‘normal’ as possible, and with the working year almost over, now is the perfect time for businesses to work with qualified health and safety consultants to implement the ISO 45001 Standards prior to the new year commencing. This will put them in a safe, secure position for starting 2022 confidently, as they will be able to reassure both staff and customers of their onsite safety.

 85.
The Standards provide an internationally recognised framework for identifying and preventing workplace injuries, meeting OH&S legal obligations, and ensuring that a businesses OH&S practices are routinely audited to ensure that everything is operating as it should be.

 86.
The implementation process is straight-forward. Businesses that work at implementing these Standards must first conduct a gap analysis of their existing work health and safety practices to ascertain which of their practices meet the ISO 45001 requirements, and which don’t. Upon identifying the ones that don’t, businesses must then work at refining their processes to ensure they all meet the high standards outlined within ISO 45001.

 87.
One of the key aspects of ISO 45001 is that it ensures all staff within a business are actively involved in the development and upholding of its work health and safety practices, from the top down. Thus, both senior management and floor staff will be involved in the businesses occupational health and safety strategies in several ways; from actively working with the Standards to ensure their strategies are compliant, to developing clear reporting processes, to educating all staff on what they should do in the event of an incident.

 88.
ISO 45001 promotes both physical and mental wellbeing

 89.
The past two years have introduced a number of additional worksite risks that staff may be exposed to, beyond physical risks. Stress, worry, burnout, and other mental health risks can all impact staff in numerous ways, and it is crucial that businesses develop compliant processes for promoting the mental wellbeing of their employees.

 90.
ISO 45001 has several clauses that businesses can work with to develop nurturing practices that demonstrate to staff that they are concerned about both their physical and mental health. Further, ISO 45001 requires businesses to adopt a proactive approach when it comes to worksite safety, by actively identifying and eliminating potential OH&S risks, before they can impact workers.

 91.
Make 2022 all about 45001

 92.
Businesses should be doing everything they can to ensure 2022 is a productive, safe year for all their employees. Doing so will not only help keep their staff safe, it will also maximise productivity and profit.

 93.
Regardless of the size or scope of your operations, it stands to benefit something from ISO 45001 certification. One of its central benefits is its applicability, as every business, from a multi-billion-dollar national company to a family run store, stands to gain something from its implementation.

 94.
Our safety consultants can assist throughout this process

 117.

ISO 45001 certification helps businesses demonstrate a commitment to safe working practices.

 118.
To understand the importance of compliant, structured occupational health and safety practices, just imagine what it would be like without them. If there were no regulated processes in place, each business would have to adopt their own approach to work health and safety, and incident handling, and some approaches would probably be far superior to others. People who happen to be working at a company that practices effective OH&S strategies would have their needs provided for, but individuals at companies with less methodical approaches would be out of luck. To ensure that staff everywhere are provided with a safe, compliant work environment it is crucial that all businesses meet their OH&S regulatory obligations, develop compliant work health and safety practices, and demonstrate a commitment to the safety of everyone onsite. Organisations can work towards achieving these goals through the implementation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System.

 119.
An approach to workplace safety that is second to none

 120.
Specifically, the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards is an internationally recognised Business Management System that helps companies achieve some complementary goals, including:

 121.

 122.
The development of compliant, safe, and healthy workplaces. This is achieved through providing effective OH&S guidance to enable companies to develop strategies relating to the prevention of work-related injuries and accidents.

 123.
Meeting and maintaining its legal, regulatory, and other relevant OH&S obligations. In addition, businesses will be able to develop clear documentation processes, so they can easily prove what actions they have taken to meet their work health and safety obligations.

 124.
Helping companies develop strategies for periodically reviewing the success of their OH&S practices. Through a structured auditing process, businesses will be able to best understand which of their OH&S practices are successful, in that they are doing what they set out to do, and which need to be improved upon. Through this, companies will strive for continual improvement, and the development of a compliant workplace that everyone feels safe in.

 125.

 126.
One of ISO 45001’s key strengths is that it is applicable to all businesses, no matter their industry, work type, size, or location. It provides clear solutions, that can be implemented across an operations, for ensuring the health and wellbeing requirements of staff are met, and controlling any risks that staff may encounter in their role.

 127.
It is clear why ISO 45001 is integral to staff safety. Through its implementation, businesses stand to receive the following benefits:

 128.

 129.
Preventing work safety incidents from occurring: When it comes to effective OH&S practices, prevention beats cure. It is far better to identify potential safety risks and take steps to mitigate them before they impact workers, than attempt to deal with them after an incident occurs. ISO 45001 certification helps businesses develop forward-thinking procedures to prevent accidents from occurring.

 130.
An overall reduction in expenses: Through ISO 45001 certification, companies will develop smoother, safer practices, and minimise staff downtime. This means that the business will be an overall more productive workplace. Further, the reduction of onsite incidents can help keep insurance costs down, furthering the businesses position as a safe, cost-effective operations.

 131.
Make all staff feel valued: A truism in business is that happier staff are more productive. ISO 45001 certification demonstrates to staff that a business is concerned about their physical and mental wellbeing, and is taking appropriate steps to provide them with a safe working environment. Through this, staff can fully concentrate on their work duties, free from any work safety worries.

 132.

 133.
Our OH&S specialists are here to answer your questions

 134.
This article has just briefly touched on some of the primary benefits of implementing the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards. However, there are many more, and the specific ways it helps your business achieve its goals will depend on many factors, including its industry, size, location, and so on. That is, although all businesses will benefit from certification, the specific advantages it will bring to your organisation depend on these factors.

 135.
To find out more about how your business can work at developing a safe, productive work culture, please contact our specialist consultants today by filling out this simple online contact us form, or by calling them on 1300 802 163. 159.
Blurb: Occupational Health and Safety legislation has changed significantly over the past year, and it can be a challenge for business’ to successfully meet their obligations. However, by certifying to the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards, business’ will be able to develop a proven successful, methodical approach to work health and safety. Anitech has a free webinar on this topic on the third of March, and by attending business’ will gain first-hand insight into some effective strategies that can be implemented to help them develop a safe, compliant work environment.

 160.
Effective work health and safety practices is a huge concern for business’ across Australia right now, as strong OH&S procedures demonstrate to staff, customers, and regulatory agencies that a business understands two important, interrelated, issues: Firstly, that it recognises that there is a wide range of OH&S rules, regulations, and laws that it has a duty to be aware of, and following on from that, a commitment to effective OH&S practices demonstrates that the business recognises the need to take the necessary steps to ensure it successfully complies with existing legislation. Different states, industries, and business types have distinctive work health and safety standards that they are required to meet, and all business’ have an obligation to understand what policies apply to their organisation, and work at achieving them.

 161.
Staying on top of your OH&S obligations can seem like a complicated, cumbersome task, unless it is conducted in a logical, methodical manner. Therefore, it is recommended that business’ develop a systematic approach to meeting their work health and safety requirements, through the implementation of an OH&S Management System, which helps organisations understand the scope of their OH&S requirements, conduct a thorough gap analysis of their existing systems to ascertain where they are at now in relation to OH&S practices and then compare it with their set objectives. Doing this will give business’ a clear idea of what exactly what steps need to be taken to ensure their work health and safety practices meet their workplace obligations.

 162.
To help business’ get a better understanding of this process, and make them aware of some of the challenges business’ are currently facing in relation to developing effective OH&S practices across their workplace, Anitech is hosting a free webinar on this topic, on Wednesday, the third of March, at 11am Victorian time. Titled How business’ can get the edge by implementing the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards, it will be hosted by Anita Patturajan, director of Anitech, and the two key speakers will be Anitech’s Integrated Management Systems specialists, Julian and Fadi.

 163.
They will be explaining to business’ the many benefits implementation or migration to the new ISO 45001:2018 Standards can bring to their organisation, the key distinctions between these new standards and the older ones that are being phased out, and they will be discussing some of the real-world OH&S challenges that business’ they have worked with have faced, and how successful certification to these standards helped them overcome those difficulties.

 164.
What business’ will learn from attending this webinar

 165.
Some of the key issues that will be discussed at the webinar include:

 166.

 167.
How the certification process differs for business’, depending on whether they are wholly implementing these standards, or performing a migration to from either OHSAS 18001 or AS/NZS 4801, the previous OH&S standards. The process of certifying to these standards will differ slightly for individual business’, depending on whether they were previously certified to an older standard, or need an entire implementation. Julian and Fadi will explain the key differences between these two processes, what individual business’ can expect from the procedure, and discuss some of their first-hand experiences they have had helping business’ get ISO 45001 certified.

 168.
The key benefits these new standards offer over the previous ones. They adopt a more holistic approach, and include clauses to help business’ support both the physical and mental wellbeing of staff. They will explain how the wider scope of ISO 45001 means that business’ certified to it are working towards strengthening their entire operations, developing a clear paper trail of their processes, and demonstrating to staff, customers, and regulatory agencies that they take the issue of effective OH&S management seriously.

 169.
An introductory overview of how the implementation of a Business Management System helps organisations align their daily practices with their long-term business goals. This will be discussed in an accessible, jargon-free manner, so all business’ that attend will be able to learn about what a Business Management System is, how it helps companies achieve their goals, and how its structured, systematic approach works to ensure that everything is running as it should be.

 170.
An open discussion about some of the current OH&S issues that business’ are facing, and how the ISO 45001 Standards can help them to successfully overcomes these challenges. This will include a ten-minute Q&A session, in which attendees will be able to ask Julian and Fadi any questions they have relating to these standards, such as how they could be applied to their particular business, some of the challenges business’ may face throughout the implementation process and how to overcome them, and so on.

 171.

 172.
There are a limited number of spots available for this webinar, so anyone interested in attending should book their spot at the earliest convenience. You can do so by following this link Webinar Registration – Zoom.

 173.
However, it is recommended that business’ do not delay in finding out how these standards could be tailored to their organisation, to help it achieve its objectives. OH&S legislation has changed a lot over the past year to ensure that business’ are COVID-Safe and that staff are provided with supportive work environments. There are a number of COVID related challenges that business’ may face this year, that they need to stay on top of, and certifying to these standards will help organisations achieve this goal.

 174.
If you want to ensure you are meeting your existing obligations, and have effective strategies in place for ensuring your business practices meet changes in legislation, then please give Anitech’s safety consultants a call today on 1300 802 163, for a brief, free-of-charge consultation. 199.
Blurb: Business’ have faced many Occupational Health and Safety challenges over the past year, and they have a responsibility to ensure their workplace meets work health and safety legislation, and provides a safe, supportive environment for staff. Later this month, Anitech will be hosting a webinar on how implementing the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards can help business’ meet their legal requirements, improve staff morale through the development of a supportive work culture, and uphold their reputation as a safe business to conduct dealings with.

 200.
Organisations across Australia have faced innumerable challenged over the past year, which has seen many have to alter their entire operations, including the way they conduct business with their supply chain, how their staff perform their duties, how their workspace is laid out, and so on. It can be challenging for some business’ to even keep up with some of the legal and regulatory changes to workplaces, including new Occupational Health and Safety laws, rules for how many staff can work onsite at the one time, and check-in policies onsite visitors are required to perform to be allowed onsite. To give business’ a better idea of some ways they can get a hold of their OH&S responsibilities, Anitech will be hosting a webinar later this month on how an OH&S Management System can help business’ keep on top of their work health and safety responsibilities.

 201.
How business’ can get the edge by implementing the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards is the title of the webinar, and it will be hosted by industry professionals and health and safety specialists with years of experience. They will be explaining to business’ how implementing the new ISO 45001:2018 OH&S Standards will help them better understand the scope of their work health and safety responsibilities, what steps need to be taken to both ensure they are meeting their responsibilities and maintaining accurate documentation of their processes, and some effective ways to develop a supportive, safe work environment, where potential work health and safety threats are mitigated before they can lead to workplace injury.

 202.
It will be an informative session, where the hosts will clearly explain the benefits these new work health and safety standards have over the previous ones that are being phased out, and attendees will come to understand how these standards adopt a preventative approach to OH&S practices, as they work at auditing a business’ existing processes for potential risks, and then proactively minimising the impact of risks on operations.

 203.
By attending you will be able to have your questions answered

 204.
The webinar will comprise of two main parts; initially there will be a presentation by the host, and specialists, in which they will outline some of the OH&S challenges business’ are currently facing, and how the ISO 45001 Standards will help them satisfactorily address these challenges, by:

 205.

 206.
Helping an organisation to streamline and strengthen their daily operations. The Standards require business’ to conduct a thorough audit of their existing processes to identify potential weak points, inefficiencies, and areas of concern that, if left unaddressed, could result in a potential workplace injury. Business’ are then required to implement appropriate measures to not only mitigate the threat, but to also ensure that the chances of reoccurrence are significantly minimised.

 207.
Ensuring that an organisation not only meets their legal obligations, but is able to provide sufficient documentation outlining what OH&S practices they have implemented, and how these practices align with workplace legislation. By doing this, business’ are both able to easily chart their own progress regarding their work health and safety practices, and to provide proof to relevant parties outlining what the organisation is doing to ensure it maintains compliance. By taking these active steps, business’ are able to uphold the reputation of their organisation.

 208.

 209.
Following the presentation, their will be a short Q&A session, in which attendees are can have their own questions answered about anything pertaining to the standards, such as how they relate to their business-type or industry they work in, what the implementation process is like, some of the ways the standards might help them streamline their processes, and so on.

 210.
Attending this webinar will give business’ an understanding of the scope of potential OH&S risks that they may be exposed to, and what steps they should be taking to address these concerns, and publicly demonstrate that they are adequately meeting their legal obligations. The webinar will be hosted on the 3rd of March at 11am Victorian time. Please follow this link Webinar Registration – Zoom to RSVP your attendance.

 211.
However, if reading about some of the issues business’ are facing regarding this matter, and how the ISO 45001 Standards can help them sufficiently address these matters, has made you want to learn more about how the standards can help your business ASAP, then please give Anitech’s safety consultants a call today on 1300 802 163, for a short, free, consultation. All you need to do is give them a brief overview of your operations, and some of the OH&S challenges it faces, and they will be able to discuss with you how these standards could be implemented across your operations, in a clear and easy manner. Doesn’t that sound like a safe bet?

 236.
With the first month of 2021 almost behind us, it is great to see that the year is already off to a positive start. Business’ are slowly going back to ‘normal’, and the past couple of weeks has seen organisations across Australia welcome their staff back to onsite working. While this is certainly a positive development and a step in the right direction, it is important to note that there have been significant changes in federal and state government laws regarding employees in the workplace. Business’ have a duty to both familiarise themselves with these changes, and then ensure that their workplace is modified to reflect these laws.

 237.
Fortunately, there is an easy way for organisations to ensure that they are both meeting their legal obligations and demonstrating a commitment to the safety of their staff, through the implementation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System. The ISO 45001 OH&S Standards are a globally recognised, proven successful, set of work health and safety standards that companies can implement to ensure that they are meeting their OH&S legal responsibilities, that they are on top of changes to workplace regulations, and that their staff and onsite visitors are given clear instructions of what they should be doing to help uphold a COVID-Safe workplace.

 238.
An OH&S Management Systems helps business’ improve the health, safety and wellbeing of their employees

 239.
The individual states and territories across Australia will have unique workplace rules and regulations, regarding upholding a COVID-Safe work environment. For example, recent changes in Victorian workplace rules and regulations include:

 240.

 241.
Requiring all staff and visitors who are onsite for more than fifteen minutes to use their mobile phone to sign in with the QR Code on display, for the purposes of contact tracing.

 242.
Business’ working within certain industries requiring people to undergo a temperature test to gain admission into the premises.

 243.
Many staff juggling work from home and the office, which sees them onsite for a few days a week and working from home the remainder of the time. This ensures that workplaces are not running to capacity, and that adequate social distancing measures are in place between staff.

 244.

 245.
The ISO 45001 OH&S Standards can help business’ get on top of their workplace obligations, by providing them with effective, proactive strategies to develop safer, more supportive, work environments. This is specifically achieved through some of its clauses requiring companies to identify relevant legislation pertaining to their business type and ensure that the legislation is available to them.

 246.
They are then required to cross-reference their legal obligations with the risk assessment portions of the standards, and thus develop pre-emptive strategies that work at keeping their workplace safe whilst also meeting their legislative requirements. Further, the Standards help business’ adopt a forward-thinking approach when amending their business systems or organisational structure, as they are required to factor in their legal obligations when developing, enhancing, upholding, or streamlining their existing management system.

 247.
Then, to prove that they are meeting their legal obligations, business’ will be required to develop a means of demonstrating, both internally within the operations and externally to relevant parties, how they are meeting their legal obligations, the steps they are taking to minimise potential risks from impacting operations, and so on.

 248.
The ISO 45001 OH&S Standards have been in effect since 2018, and are replacing the previous OH&S Standards of OHSAS 18001 and AS/NZS 4801, and companies that were previously certified to one of those standards have until September 2021 to migrate. The migration process is easy and hassle-free, as it cross-references the OH&S Standards that business’ have already met through certification to the older standards, and then simply works at ensuring the rest of their operations meets the requirements outlined in the new ISO 45001 guidelines.

 249.
By certifying to the ISO 45001 Standards your business is demonstrating to staff, customers, and stakeholders that it recognises that there have been significant changes to workplace legislation over the past year, and that it is taking the necessary steps to ensure that it is meeting its legal and regulatory responsibilities, and providing staff and onsite visitors with a safe, supportive workplace. Further, the standards help business’ to:

 250.

 251.
Cross-reference existing legal requirements with the individual requirements of their organisation. Business’ may be subject to different workplace laws, depending on factors such as the size of their organisation, how many people are required to be onsite at one time, the sort of work it performs, and so on. The standards help business’ to understand how existing workplace laws apply to them, and what steps they need to take to achieve regulatory compliance.

 252.
Confirm that meeting their legal responsibilities remains a key priority to the operations, by developing processes to ensure that attaining their OH&S legal requirements is a factor always taken into consideration when the company changes its operational structure. For example, if the company makes the decision to expand its operations and hire new employees, then the standards would help the business to ensure that appropriate action is taken to ensure that social distancing requirements and other legal obligations continue to be met, and if need be, appropriate organisational adjustments are implemented.

 253.

 254.
The ISO 45001 Standards protect business’ by ensuring everything is done the right way

 255.
A core strength of the ISO 45001 Standards is that it has a number of clauses and requirements business’ must demonstrate that they have met in order to achieve certification, which in turn, ensures companies are meeting their legal obligations. Through certification to these standards, business’ are able to demonstrate to their staff, stakeholders, customers, and regulatory bodies that they have conducted a thorough risk assessment of their worksites, identified a number of potential OH&S risks and taken active steps to ensure they don’t become a health and safety issue, and have a clear incident reporting procedure in place, so that in the event of an issue, everyone onsite knows what to do to minimise harm to themselves and others, whilst getting the issue safely under control.

 256.
Depending on the size and scope of your business, as well as the duties it carries out, your company stands to gain from the ISO 45001 OH&S Standards in any number of ways. If you want to know more about how these standards could be specifically tailored to your organisation to ensure it gets the utmost benefit from them, then please give Anitech’s safety consultants a call today on 1300 802 163.

 257.
Give them a run down of your company, and relevant information such as the number of staff you need onsite daily, and they will be able to explain to you how these standards can be specifically tailored to your organisation, to ensure that it achieves regulatory compliance and remains a safe, supportive environment for staff. Doesn’t this sound like a great business strategy?

 283.
One of the most effective tools available to companies looking to develop a safe, supportive, and compliant workplace, is information. The more informed management, staff, customers, and clients are about their rights and responsibilities, the better a business can serve its customers, meet its legal obligations, and reassure all staff that their health and safety requirements will be provided for whilst onsite. With many organisations across Victoria now having their staff return to the workplace, it is the perfect time for employers to both meet their legal obligations and promote a safe, supportive environment. This can be done by ensuring their workplace is adequately providing COVID-Safe logins, visible signage, and informative posters, to keep everyone onsite in the loop about what they must do to keep both themselves and others safe.

 284.
The Victorian Government has an informative website outlining both what business’ are legally obligated to do to ensure a COVID-Safe workplace, as well as additional, non-required, steps that companies are encouraged to take, to demonstrate their commitment to staff and visitor safety, and how they are taking an active role to ensure staff are informed about potential risk factors, and what they can do to mitigate the threat.

 285.
The website gives business’ a host of information, including an overview of The Victorian Government QR Code Service, a contact tracing service which sees everyone onsite for more than fifteen minutes using their mobile phone to sign in with the QR Code, to aid in contact tracing.

 286.
A clear sign regarding safety

 287.
The website also contains a collection of free-to-download health questionnaires, and a collection of free signage and posters, informing people of social distancing requirements, reminders about when are where people are required to wear a mask, as well as signs reassuring customers that your business has implemented COVID-Safe practices, and that they can safely frequent the premises.

 288.
It is advised that business’ visit this site, as it has dual benefits. Firstly, by downloading some of the free signage and posters, and then displaying them around their workplace, companies are actively helping to inform staff and visitors about ways they can stay safe, what steps the business is taking to ensure their health and safety is provided for whilst onsite and joining in the efforts to get workplaces back to normal. In addition, by visiting this site, business’ may learn something that they were previously unaware of in relation to how to stay safe, or be informed of innovative ways to curb the virus through the spread of knowledge.

 289.
An OH&S Management System can help business’ with Overall Heightened Sensibility

 290.
In addition to learning about how to stay safe through the spread of knowledge, companies wanting to ensure that their work health and safety practices are both second-to-none and meeting regulatory standards should consider migrating to the International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 45001 OH&S Standards. These guidelines help business’ implement an effective Occupational Health and Safety Management System across all their work sites, catering to both the physical and mental wellbeing requirements of staff.

 291.
These standards adopt a forward-thinking, pro-active approach to developing effective OH&S practices, including working to identify and mitigate potential work health and safety risks before they have a chance to impact operations, developing a clear reporting process that all staff are trained on in the event of an incident, and working with companies to conduct a gap analysis, which compares their existing OH&S practices with what standards they need to achieve, thus giving business’ a clear direction on what they need to do to achieve their OH&S objectives.

 292.
The most valuable kind of knowledge

 293.
It is clear that there are many services available to business’ looking to develop a safe, supportive, workplace. By taking simple steps, such as requiring visitors to log in with a QR Code, having clear signage around the workplace which outlines what people should be doing to stay safe, and publicly promoting what steps your company is taking to be COVID-Safe via social media, your business is helping people stay safe, demonstrating to the public that it is meeting both its legal and ethical obligations, and working towards getting back to normal as quickly as possible.

 294.
If you would like to know more about how you can develop internationally certified, proven successful, COVID-Safe practices for your business, then please give Anitech’s safety consultants a call today on 1300 802 163. It is a quick and easy process, where you simply outline to them the scope of your operations and some of the potential OH&S issues staff may encounter, and they will be able to explain to you how the ISO 45001 Standards could be tailored to the specific requirements of your organisation, to keep staff safe, ensure legal obligations are met, and uphold your organisations reputation as a safe and caring business to work with. 319.
While 2020 was a tough year for business’ across Australia, the successful way many employers handled some of the challenges they faced is a tribute to their strong work ethic, the resilience of their staff, and the willingness of the community to support organisations in need. Business’ across Australia responded to the challenges of 2020 by analysing their operational structure and working out how it could be adjusted and altered to ensure that it still provides the same quality service to customers, but in the safest, most secure, manner. With 2020 almost behind us, companies may be wondering what they can do to ensure next year is a successful one for them, and the answer is simple: continue to reassure their staff and customers that they are a safe and reputable organisation to deal with.

 320.
There has been a lot of concern about safe workplaces throughout 2020, and business’ have been working to demonstrate their commitment to high safety standards, in ways such as auditing their workspace, supplying onsite personal hygiene equipment, and so on. However, while these measures may focus on individual work health and safety concerns within the business, they are only addressing potential OH&S issues on a case-by-case basis, and failing to develop strategies to protect the operations as a whole. However, through the implementation of a certified OH&S Management System, business’ are able to meet their OH&S requirements in a unified manner, ensure that they are not overlooking anything, and keep up with their marketplace competitors.

 321.
Offer safety, security, and productivity with ISO 45001

 322.
In 2018, The International Organization for Standardization released what is now the industry standard across the world for developing high Occupational Health and Safety practices across a workplace, the ISO 45001 Standards. By adopting a holistic approach to developing effective work health and safety practices, these standards ensure the goals of management, individual staff, and the entire operations, are aligned, and working towards the same OH&S goals. They differ from the previous work health and safety standards, OHSAS 18001 and AS/NZS 4801, by applying a preventative approach to work health and safety. This means that the standards help business’ to audit their entire premises, assess workspaces and equipment, and gauge for weak spots, in order to identify potential OH&S risks and hazards, before they have a chance to impact operations.

 323.
Business’ that were previously certified to one of these standards should strongly consider migration to ISO 45001 for the new year. While business’ have until September 2021 to migrate to retain their regulatory compliance, delaying migration stands to negatively impact business’. This is because the new standards provide a more cohesive approach to developing safe work practices, and work at ensuring that employees are both physically and mentally safe. Business’ that are certified to these standards demonstrate to other companies that they have a commitment to go above and beyond when it comes to developing a safe work environment. Further, business’ that are not certified to these standards risk being seen as behind the times, non-compliant, and not doing everything they can to develop a safe, supportive environment for their staff and customers.

 324.
To help make 2021 a successful, safe, and profitable year for your business, it should migrate to these standards as early as it can in the new year. This means that it will start the year in an advantageous position, demonstrating to the marketplace that it is safe to deal with, has gone the extra mile in developing a safe work culture, and is conducting regular audits of its processes to test for weak spots, and then work at mitigating their potential impact on operations.

 325.
Once these risks have been identified, the business is then able to take proactive measures to minimise the potential for injury on staff or the operations, ensuring that the work environment remains safe and productive. This is distinctive from the previous standards, which only addressed work health and safety from a reactive approach, through mitigating the effects of existing hazards. These new standards work to ensure that an incident never occurs in the first place, and that if it does, there is a clear procedure in place for what to do to mitigate its effects, reduce downtime to operations, and keep people safe.

 326.
Three easy steps to migration

 327.
For companies already certified to one of the existing OH&S Standards, migration to ISO 45001 can be completed in three straight-forward, clear steps: A Gap Analysis, the Integration process, and Training staff on the new Management System.

 328.

 329.
Gap Analysis: This step gets your operations from Point A to B. Specifically, it involves conducting an analysis of your existing OH&S practices to ascertain what is already compliant to ISO 45001, and what is not. After identifying where your business stands in relation to ISO 45001 compliance, and what needs to be done to achieve it, the process moves onto the next step.

 330.
Integration: This step works at integrating and altering your existing OH&S practices to ensure they migrate to ISO 45001 compliance. It allows the business to understand the limitations of their existing OH&S practices, and how through getting them ISO 45001 compliant they have been strengthened, thus ensuring a safer, more productive, work environment for everyone. The ISO 45001 Standards utilise the same High-Level Structure as other ISO Standards, including ISO 9001 Quality Management and ISO 14001 Environmental Management, so if your business has previously certified to these standards, the integration process will be even easier.

 331.
Training: Once the business has demonstrated its compliance to ISO 45001, it should work at training its staff and management on the new OH&S Management System. This ensures that everyone understand their role and responsibility in keeping the workplace safe, know what to do in the event of an incident, and so on. By adequately training staff on the particulars of the new system, your business is ensuring that the chances of potential OH&S risks impacting operations is minimised, as everyone is on the same page about what to do in the event of an incident.

 332.

 333.
When it comes to reflecting on 2020, you can do it from either a pessimistic or optimistic perspective. Pessimistically, you could say that it detrimentally impacted companies across Australia in a myriad of ways, ranging from financial, to safety, to staff morale. However, you could optimistically say that 2020 presented business’ with a unique set of challenges, and many rose to the occasion, finding innovative ways to work, interact with their customers, and so on. Successful business’ work at meeting challenges head-on, and adapting to difficult situations, and these standards help companies do both.

 334.
If you are ready to meet the business challenges of 2021 head-on, then please call Anitech’s safety systems consultants today on 1300 802 163. 359.
For many companies out there, ‘business as usual’ means doing things the way they have always been done; the operations has always utilised this machinery so it is going to keep using it, the business has always had this office set-up so it is going to stay this way, this procedure has always been in place so it is going to stay in place, and so on. While this may, at surface level, appear to keep things running, once you start assessing the processes and procedures you may discover that they are inefficient, expensive, and not as safe as they could be. For business’ in this scenario, they need to find a way to both strengthen their operations and minimise their expenses, and fortunately, there is a simple solution.

 360.
A successful business principle states that it is worthwhile to invest in a small cost now to save significant expenses down the line, and this has never been truer than when it comes to streamlining operations, minimising expenses, and developing a safer, more secure, workplace through the implementation of an Occupational Health and Safety Management System. An effective management system sees companies streamline their operations through utilising a risk assessment approach, in which potential threats, hazards and inefficiencies to the operations are identified, so that more efficient counter measures can be implemented. This not only keeps the operations safe and enhances staff morale, it also works at minimising outgoing expenditure by developing safer, more efficient, strategies to run the business.

 361.
The International Organization for Standardization’s ISO 45001:2018 OH&S Standards help business’ develop an effective OH&S Management System, which works with them to help achieve all their work health and safety goals in a clear, structured manner. This is done by employing a forward-thinking approach, in which potential risk areas are identified before they can impact operations, and then safety measures are implemented to mitigate the possible effects on operations. These standards provide a unified, cohesive approach to OH&S management, by working to not only develop a safe, industry compliant, workplace, but by doing so in a manner that is mutually beneficial to both management and staff, as it develops a supportive, secure workplace. In turn, this works at keeping outgoing expenses down, by reducing downtime, minimising workplace injuries, and developing the most efficient, streamlined work practices.

 362.
ISO 45001 reduces costs by minimising downtime and increasing productivity

 363.
The ISO 45001 standards are replacing the old work health and safety guidelines, the OHSAS 18001 and AS/NZS 4801 standards, and are now the go-to guide for all business’ looking to strengthen their existing OH&S practices, identify potential weak spots and safeguard against them, and develop a cohesive work environment in which all staff feel supported and valued. Business’ already certified to one of the existing standards, that are looking to retain their industry compliance, have until September 2021 to migrate over to the ISO 45001 Standards. However, for business’ looking to get an edge in a tough marketplace, it would be to their advantage to migrate at their earliest convenience, as these standards provide cost-effective, employee-focused, solutions, including:

 364.

 365.
A reduction of overall operational costs: Through the implementation of the ISO 45001 Standards, business’ are able to minimise the costs incurred from OH&S issues. This includes a reduction in the number of overall incidents, and, through the development of a clear, structured process for what to do in the event of an unexpected incident, ensuring that potential harm is minimised, and that no time is wasted working out the logistics of incident management.

 366.
A reduction in insurance premiums: The implementation of these standards demonstrates a commitment to going above and beyond when it comes to operational and individual safety, and as a result, is looked on favourably by insurers. By implementing these standards, insurers are more likely to reduce the costs of premiums, as the business has demonstrated a commitment to workplace safety, and shown evidence of what steps it is taking to keep its staff safe.

 367.
Gaining more business from clients and customers: In a challenging marketplace, business’ can work at getting the competitive edge by demonstrating that they are concerned about their social responsibilities, and are taking steps to ensure that everyone they work with is safe, secure, and supported at all times. This not only upholds their reputation, it can result in an increase in profits, as potential clients and customers are more likely to want to deal with a company that has demonstrated its regulatory compliance, and proven that it is on top of its social responsibilities.

 368.
Improved retention rates through minimising absenteeism: Workplace injuries can negatively impact a business’ ability to operate in many ways. To begin with, they can result in the staff member not being able to do their job for some time, but they can also negatively effect overall employee morale, and the business’ reputation as a safe employer. By implementing these standards, employers are working at developing safe, supportive workplaces, and these are the kinds of environments that staff want to work in, which increases retention rates, and lowers absenteeism. All of this helps develop a safer, more productive, profitable company culture.

 369.

 370.
Work Health and Safety means Working Hard, Securely

 371.
With an effective OH&S Management System providing myriad regulatory, financial, and cultural benefits to organisations, it would befit companies to work at migrating to the ISO 45001 Standards as soon as they can. The initial costs incurred through the implementation of these standards pale in comparison to the financial savings that business’ stand to gain from it, as well as the peace of mind that comes from regulatory compliance, and the development of a safe, supportive work culture. The implementation of these standards across their operations not only shows staff and management that you have their interests at heart, it demonstrates to the wider community that your business is a socially responsible one that is secure to deal with.

 372.
If you would like to know more about the range of benefits your organisations could potentially accrue through the utilisation of these standards, then please give Anitech’s safety systems consultants a call today on 1300 802 163. Tell them about your business, its size, scope, industry type, and any issues unique to its operations, and they will be able to explain how the standards could be applied to it to ensure your business takes full advantage of the potential safety, financial, and other workplace benefits. What could be dearer to a company than that?

 397.
Things change in the business world all the time, due to unexpected events and issues within the larger marketplace creating a domino effect, which impacts the entire marketplace supply chain. This means that deadlines and release dates can get pushed back to a more suitable date when they can be released at a less stressful time. This is a reality that business’ from all different industries must deal with, with wholesale, retail, and even the committee for internationally certified business management solutions often being required to change their plans due to unexpected events in the marketplace.

 398.
The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the ability of business’ to function this year, and as a result, the International Organization for Standardization’s original deadline of March 2021 for migration from either AS/NZS 4801 or OHSAS 18001 health and safety management systems to the internationally certified, globally improved guideline known as ISO 45001 OH&S Standards has been extended until September 2021. This is to give business’ needing to migrate a bit of breathing room, and time to deal with other challenges, before migrating to the new standards. However, companies stand to benefit from migrating sooner rather than later, as migration to the new occupational health and safety standards can result in a streamlining of operating, reduced downtime, improved staff morale, and in general, a happier, more productive, work environment. This is because the ISO 45001 Standards approach the issue of effective occupational health and safety from a much broader perspective than the previous standards, and take into consideration factors such as employee morale, staff participation, pre-emptive measures, and a number of other factors that were unaddressed in the previous standards. This means that by complying with the new ISO 45001 Standards, business’ not only ensure that their operational OH&S practices are meeting regulatory compliance, they actively develop a safer, more supportive, work culture. Due to these additional benefits the implementation of these standards brings to companies, it is a good business strategy to migrate as soon as possible.

 399.
Further, by migrating to these standards, business’ will:

 400.

 401.
Be able to develop and promote a positive occupational health and safety message and culture across the workplace. The ISO 45001 Standards operate on the philosophy of engaging staff through participation, hearing them out, and allowing them to actively contribute to a positive discussion about the OH&S direction of the company. This extends beyond simply informing staff of your business’ OH&S goals, but rather actively developing a safe, supportive work culture, where all employees are aware of their OH&S responsibilities, trained on what to do in the event of an incident, what the chain-of-command is, and so on. This means that in the event of an incident, all staff will know exactly what to do, who to report the issue to, what their individual responsibilities are, and so on, active steps which will significantly reduce the time taken to resolve the issue.

 402.
Be able to develop a forward-thinking approach to dealing with potential OH&S risks. The OHSAS 18001 standards were concerned with controlling existing hazards, while the ISO 45001 Standards adopt a more proactive perspective to dealing with potential hazards, through a risk-based analysis approach. This requires business’ to recognise potential OH&S risks before they have even occurred, and not only take active steps to minimise their effect on operations, but also to assess the situation from a possible improvement perspective. This means analysing the potential risk and not just working at mitigating it, but actively taking steps to develop a safer, more secure, more efficient in lieu system that works more effectively than the previous one ever did.

 403.
Be able to recognise and develop strategies for dealing with non-physical work health and safety risks. 2020 has been a pretty stressful year, and the changes to the way in which we work may have affected the mental health and well-being of employees. The ISO 45001 Standards provide business’ with strategies for promoting and developing a safe, mentally supportive, work environment, which fosters positive mental health in supportive ways, and provides support services for those in need. This contrasts with the previous standards, which solely addressed work health and safety hazards in the physical environment.

 404.

 405.
Migrate to the new standards today to get a competitive head start

 406.
While business’ can wait until September 2021 to migrate to the new standards, from an operational perspective it makes much more sense to migrate at your earliest convenience. In such a competitive marketplace, many business’ are at risk of losing their market share to a host of competitors, and anything that sets your business apart from the pack will help it stand out, and retain the faith of its staff, clients, and customers. This can be the crucial difference between a business struggling to make ends meet, and one that is thriving within the challenging environment.

 407.
If you would like to know more about how migrating to these new OH&S standards could help your organisation streamline its service, maximise productivity, and develop a safer, more supportive work environment, then please give Anitech’s safety systems consultants a call today on 1300 802 163. First give them a rundown of your organisation, such as its size, industry type, and specific OH&S requirements, and then they will be able to discuss with you how your business could migrate to these standards in a smooth, efficient manner, in a way which effectively implements an efficient OH&S Management System, as well as lays the groundwork for a more supportive, productive, safer work culture. Isn’t this exactly what staff, clients, and customers want from a business?
