Star Trek: Discovery‘s Sonequa Martin-Green will star alongside Donnie Wahlberg in Boston Blue, CBS’ upcoming spinoff of the long-running Blue Bloods series.

The series is set to debut this fall and will follow Detective Danny Reagan (Wahlberg) as he leaves New York City and his family to take a position with the Boston Police Department. He will be partnered with Detective Lena Silver (Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family.

“I’m gonna have to get a really good Boston accent, just so I can throw it out at times,” Martin-Green told reporters at a CBS press event. “We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. Being Detective Lena Silver, who is coming from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too. I’m super excited for this partnership, and to be back in the CBS family.“

Wahlberg added, “I’m incredibly grateful for the years on Blue Bloods, and incredibly grateful to be able to keep the the traditional Blue Bloods alive and move it forward into a new worth with new friends and new situations. We are really really working on this universe in a way that I think the Blue Bloods viewers are gonna be very happy, very excited, and a whole new world of viewers are gonna be able to discover us, too.“

Blue Bloods fans can probably expect some familiar faces to show up, as Wahlberg said, “There’ll be connective tissue to the old family. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories and still telling the Reagan stories.“

The original series was one of CBS’s most-watched dramas, and many cast members didn’t want it to end. Tom Selleck, who starred in Blue Bloods as Frank Reagan, the New York Police Department Police Commissioner, said that everyone involved wanted to return for more. “I can’t figure out why they didn’t start streaming it, do 10 episodes a year,” he said. “But I’m not the boss. Everybody wanted to come back. And I think with this cast, it would have been a gift for the audience. I don’t make those decisions. I’m prepared to celebrate and commemorate this show, but I’m still getting used to it.” Maybe he’ll make an appearance in Boston Blue.

Actors don’t always meet the real-life figures they portray, but Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) got to do just that when he hung out with Ringo Starr. The actor is set to play the iconic drummer in Sam Mendes’ The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event alongside Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) as John Lennon, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) as Paul McCartney, and Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as George Harrison.

Keoghan appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live and confirmed that he’d met with Starr after he was cast in the role. “It was one of those moments where you’re just in awe and just froze,” he said. “And when I was talking to him, I couldn’t look at him. I was nervous, like right now. He said, ‘You can look at me.’ And again — you’re playing Ringo Starr. My job is to observe and take in kind of mannerisms and study, but I want to humanize him and bring feelings to him, not just sort of imitate him.“

Keoghan added that Starr played the drums for him, but he couldn’t return the favour. “I met him at his house and he played the drums for me,” he said. “He asked me to play, but I wasn’t playing the drums for Ringo.” Fair.

The Beatles – A Four Film Cinematic Event taps Jez Butterworth, Peter Straughan & Jack Thorne as writers for the Sam Mendes movies

It was announced yesterday that Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Jack Thorne (Adolescence) have been tapped to write The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event. It remains unclear whether each writer will be responsible for a separate film or if they will collaborate across all four installments.

Sam Mendes’ production company, Neal Street Productions, has partnered with Sony Pictures Entertainment for the movies. This is the first time Apple Corps Ltd. and the members of the Beatles—Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and the families of John Lennon and George Harrison—have granted the full life story and music rights for a scripted movie. Mendes will direct all four movies, each focusing on a separate band member.

Mendes officially unveiled the cast at CinemaCon last month. He’d been “trying to do a [Beatles] film for years” but ultimately gave up because “the story was too big for one film.” He didn’t think a TV series would work either. “There had to be a way to tell the epic story for a new generation,” Mendes said. “I can assure you there is still plenty left to explore and I think we found a way to do that.“

The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event will be released in April 2028.

According to Deadline, Marvel Studios is in early talks with Thunderbolts* director Jake Schreier to helm the upcoming X-Men movie. Nothing is official now, but insiders say Schreier is looking like the top choice after a successful meeting last week. Michael Lesslie (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) wrote the script for the X-Men movie, with Kevin Feige producing.

Since Disney officially acquired 20th Century Fox more than five years ago, Marvel fans have been eager for the inevitable day when the X-Men will finally join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The franchise took small steps, with a few mentions of mutants, but it slowly led to appearances from Patrick Stewart as Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Kelsey Grammer as Beast in The Marvels, and, of course, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman as the titular characters of Deadpool & Wolverine.

A number of X-Men characters will also be appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, with the officially announced cast including Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr, Alan Cumming as Kurt Wagner, Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme, James Marsden as Scott Summers, and Channing Tatum as Remy LeBeau. Other X-Men characters were included in a recent rumoured cast list, but it remains to be seen if it’s accurate. When it comes time for a proper X-Men movie, Marvel will almost certainly be introducing a new cast, but we should have a better idea of their plans after Avengers: Doomsday/Avengers: Secret Wars.

It was also recently revealed that Ryan Reynolds is actively developing ideas for a new Deadpool movie featuring several X-Men characters.

Thunderbolts* has been earning some decent reviews (the best since Spider-Man: No Way Home), but the box office has been disappointing. Our own Chris Bumbray said the film is a “significant step-up” from Captain America: Brave New World, but he cautioned that “it’s not the game-changer some of the breathless early junket reviews suggest.” However, Bumbray did enjoy the movie, saying he “had a better time with Thunderbolts than any other Marvel movie (outside Deadpool & Wolverine) in recent memory.” You can check out the rest of his review right here, and don’t forget to let us know what you thought of the film as well!

According to his rep, Foley died “peacefully in his sleep earlier this week following a yearslong struggle with brain cancer.” Very sad news.

Foley made his feature directorial debut with Reckless, a romantic drama starring Aidan Quinn and Daryl Hannah. From there, he moved to working with Madonna and directed several of her biggest music videos, including Live to Tell, Papa Don’t Preach, and True Blue. He also directed her in Who’s That Girl, a screwball comedy released in 1987.

He also directed At Close Range, After Dark, My Sweet, Two Bits, The Chamber, Fear, The Corruptor, Confidence, Perfect Stranger, and took over the Fifty Shades franchise from Sam Taylor-Johnson, helming the final two movies, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.

Foley also made the leap to the small screen, directing episodes of Twin Peaks, Hannibal, Wayward Pines, and Billions, but it was Netflix’s House of Cards where he made his mark. He ultimately directed a dozen episodes of the series. In 2017, he spoke about his career with THR, mentioning his tendency to leap between genres in the realm of both movies and television.

“What I love is that it’s fluid. I’ve had a very fluid career of ups and downs and lefts and rights, and I always just responded to what I was interested in at the moment and I was very unconscious about genre,” Foley said. “So the thing I would say I least like is there is an understandable tendency to, of course, pigeonhole somebody or identify them as, ‘He does this kind of movie, so if we’re making that kind of movie, we should get him and he’ll make it like the other ones he’s made.’ That is of no interest to me, personally, to repeat myself. So I’ve always just followed my nose, for better or for worse, sometimes for worse.“

He continued, “What’s best and what’s worst [about the industry] are almost the same to me. Because what’s worst is you get pigeonholed, and what’s best is I haven’t been. It means that I’m still making movies, despite hopping all over the place, so there’s a great thing about Hollywood where it’s not so purely linear, in terms of a director having a success critically and commercially and continuing that in an unbroken stream, which is true of no one.“

It’s been a long time since I watched Glengarry Glen Ross. Perhaps tonight’s the night. Our thoughts and condolences go out to James Foley’s family and friends. He will be deeply missed.

Last November, we heard the heartbreaking news that genre icon Tony Todd had passed away at the age of 69. Thankfully, we still have some Todd performances to look forward to, as he had worked on several projects that were in post-production when he passed, including Final Destination: Bloodlines, which will be reaching theatres on May 16th. Todd reprises the role of mortician Bludworth, a role he previously played in Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and Final Destination 5 – and when the first reactions to the new film recently made their way online, several of them said this sequel stands as a tribute to Todd. Now, a promotional featurette has been unveiled that focuses entirely on Todd and his character Bludworth, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Final Destination: Bloodlines has the following synopsis: Plagued by a violent recurring nightmare, college student Stefanie heads home to track down the one person who might be able to break the cycle and save her family from the grisly demise that inevitably awaits them all. It has been rated R for strong violent / grisly accidents, and language.

Tony Todd is joined in the cast by Brec Bassinger, Richard Harmon, Kaitlyn Santa Juana, Teo Briones, Rya Kihlstedt, Anna Lore, Owen Patrick Joyner, Max Lloyd-Jones, Andrew Tinpo Lee, April Amber Telek, and Alex Zahara.

The directing duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie, were at the helm of this film. Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is producing Final Destination: Bloodlines with franchise producer Craig Perry, Dianne McGunigle, and Sheila Hanahan Taylor. Watts came up with the initial idea, which was fleshed out into a screenplay by Lori Evans Taylor and Guy Busick.

Final Destination is my favorite horror franchise of the 2000s. I’m hyped that it’s finally coming back, and that Tony Todd was able to work on the new movie. I’ve been waiting for this one ever since the opening weekend of Final Destination 5 way back in 2011.

Are you looking forward to seeing Tony Todd play Bludworth again in Final Destination: Bloodlines? Take a look at the featurette, then let us know by leaving a comment below.

Sixteen years passed from the time Eli Roth made a slasher faux trailer called Thanksgiving for the Robert Rodriguez / Quentin Tarantino double feature Grindhouse to the day when a feature version of Thanksgiving (read our review HERE) finally made its way into theatres – and soon after that movie was released in 2023, it was announced that a sequel would be coming along in 2025. Five months ago, we heard that Thanksgiving 2 would start filming in March… but that didn’t happen. To be ready for a Thanksgiving 2025 release, the slasher sequel would need to start filming any day now. But apparently we’re not getting Thanksgiving 2 this year, because it has just been announced that Roth will be making a different horror movie called Ice Cream Man in Canada this summer!

Media Capital Technologies (MCT) and The Horror Section are fully financing Ice Cream Man, which follows an idyllic summer town descending into madness when an ice cream man serves kids sweet delights with horrifying results. Plot details are being kept under wraps. A press release notes that Roth will be directing the film from a screenplay he wrote, based on “an original idea he has had for over twenty years, but studios were too nervous to finance.”

Roth is producing alongside MCT’s Christopher Woodrow and Raj Singh and Cream’s Kate Harrison. Executive producers include MCT’s Connor DiGregorio and Eli Massillon and The Horror Section’s Jon Schnaars. WME Independent represent the international distribution rights and plan to introduce it to buyers in at the Cannes market. The Horror Section holds the U.S. rights to the film and the plan is to give it a wide theatrical release during the 2nd quarter of 2026.

Roth provided the following statement: “I’ve had this idea for a long, long time, and studios were too afraid of my early drafts. Now’s the time to push the envelope farther than I ever have with what I think will be my most terrifying and insane film to date. Films like Ice Cream Man are what we created The Horror Section for, to make unrated, boundary-pushing theatrical events the horror fans can all scream about for years. I’m very lucky to have such fantastic partners like MCT and, of course, all the investors in The Horror Section.” Woodrow and Singh added, “Working with Eli is always a privilege, and this film feels fresh and exciting as it’s his first original project in the independent market in nearly a decade. We believe Ice Cream Man will mark the start of the next great horror franchise with massive commercial potential.“

Marvel and Sony are cooking up something special for Spider-Man: Brand New Day by adding The Bear’s Liza Colón-Zayas to the cast. Details about Colón-Zayas’s role remain a mystery, but the news is still delicious.

Liza Colón-Zayas is an Emmy-winning actress who broke into acting with a role on New York Undercover. She won the Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy in 2024 for her role as Tina Marrero, a rough-around-the-edge chef who insists on taking on the lion’s share of any order.

Liza Colón-Zayas joins Tom Holland and Stranger Things star Sadie Sink, a new addition to the franchise. Sink’s role remains a mystery, but that hasn’t stopped fans from speculating about her part. According to reports, Sink could star as Peter and MJ’s daughter Anna-May “Annie” Parker, New Warriors member Firestar, Gwen Stacy, Peter’s lesser-known love interest Carlie Cooper, Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. Black Cat, or Janine Godbe, a love interest of Ben Reilly, Peter Parker’s troubled clone.

Destin Daniel Creton directs Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with Amy Pascal producing alongside Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige.

During Marvel’s latest CinemaCon presentation, Cretton said his one-year-old’s first words were ‘Spider-Man.’ He also shared how he lost some money playing roulette. “Everyday right now, I’m exploring the next stage of this amazing character with a team of incredible artists of the world. How to swing, how to create an emotional story and a ride we haven’t seen before,” said Cretton.

Cretton has his work cut out for him as the last Spider-Man film, Spider-Man: No Way Home, erased Peter Parker from everyone’s memory, even Peter’s two best friends, MJ (Zendaya) and Ned (Jacob Batalon). Positioning Peter as an unknown hero does wipe the slate clean, but how much do you want to bet Brand New Day is not a hard reset, and at least a few characters from Peter’s past will recognize him? That’s just my guess. I don’t know how many more Spider-Man movies Holland has left, and starting from scratch feels like a significant step toward locking yourself in for the long haul.

Who do you think Liza Colón-Zayas plays in Spider-Man: Brand New Day? Maybe it’s someone related to Miles Morales? Introducing Miles would be a great way to let Holland off the hook as the friendly neighborhood wall-crawler. Let’s see your predictions in the comments section below.

Weapons and The Three-Body Problem star Benedict Wong is ready to brave the post-apocalypse for Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars. Scott’s next epic is currently shooting in Italy with Jacob Elodi (Saltburn, Priscilla, The Narrow Road to the Deep North), Margaret Qualley (The Substance, Maid, Kinds of Kindness), Josh Brolin (Running Man, Weapons, Outer Range), and Guy Pearce (The Brutalist, Neighbours, Inside) leading the cast.

The Dog Stars hails from 20th Century Studios and is based on the 2012 novel by Peter Heller (Burn, The River, The Painter, The Last Ranger). Initially, Scott was reteaming with Gladiator II star Paul Mescal for The Dog Stars, but scheduling conflicts with his part in Sam Mendes’s Beatles anthology kept him from participating. Mescal plays Paul McCartney in Mendes’s upcoming Beatles film series, making him essential to the project. Mark L. Smith, who wrote The Revenant and the Netflix mini-series American Primeval, is partnering with Christopher Wilkinson (Ali, Nixon, Birth of the Dragon) to pen the screenplay.

Here’s the official synopsis for Heller’s novel:

“Hig’s wife is gone, his friends are dead, and he lives in the hangar of a small abandoned airport with his dog, Jasper, and a mercurial, gun-toting misanthrope named Bangley. But when a random transmission beams through the radio of his 1956 Cessna, the voice ignites a hope deep inside him that a better life exists outside their tightly controlled perimeter. Risking everything, he flies past his point of no return and follows its static-broken trail, only to find something that is both better and worse than anything he could ever hope for.”

Most know Benedict Wong as Wong, Master of the Mystic Arts, leader and former librarian of Karmar-Taj. Still, Benedict Wong is a spectacular presence in many film and television projects like Annihilation, The Three-Body Problem, Deadly Class (gone too soon), The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and more. Wong’s next theatrical outing is for Zach Cregger’s anticipated horror mystery film Weapons. In Cregger’s follow-up to Barbarian, all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanishes on the same night at exactly the same time, and a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

On a scale of one to ten, what is your hype level for The Dog Stars? Let us know in the comments section below.

A few months ago, it was announced that The Sixth Sense director M. Night Shyamalan and The Notebook author Nicholas Sparks were teaming up for a supernatural romantic thriller called Remain. Shyamalan and Sparks created the original story together, with Shyamalan going off to write a screenplay based on the story while Sparks turned the idea into a novel. As was said at the time, “Both will be based on the same concept and set of characters but designed for their individual mediums.” The Sparks novel is scheduled to reach store shelves this year, on October 7th, and Amazon is already accepting pre-orders for the 352 page book at THIS LINK. Now, Deadline has revealed that the Shyamalan film will reach theatres one year later, just in time for Halloween, as Warner Bros. Pictures has given it an October 23, 2026 release date.

Sparks’ novel has the following description: A one-of-a-kind novel that grapples with the supernatural mysteries of life, death, and human connection—an unprecedented collaboration between the globally bestselling author of love stories like The Notebook and the renowned writer and director of blockbuster thrillers like The Sixth Sense. When New York architect Tate Donovan arrives in Cape Cod to design his best friend’s summer home, he is hoping to make a fresh start. Recently discharged from an upscale psychiatric facility where he was treated for acute depression, he is still wrestling with the pain of losing his beloved sister. Sylvia’s deathbed revelation—that she can see spirits who are still tethered to the living world, a gift that runs in their family—sits uneasily with Tate, who struggles to believe in more than what reason can explain. But when he takes up residence at a historic bed-and-breakfast on the Cape, he encounters a beautiful young woman named Wren who will challenge every assumption he has about his logical and controlled world. Tate and Wren find themselves forging an immediate connection, one that neither has ever experienced before. But Tate gradually discovers that below the surface of Wren’s idyllic small-town life, hatred, jealousy, and greed are festering, threatening their fragile relationship just as it begins to blossom. Tate realizes that in order to free Wren from an increasingly desperate fate, he will need to unearth the truth about her past before time runs out . . . a quest that will make him doubt whether we can ever believe the stories we tell about ourselves, and the laws that govern our existence. Love—while transformative—can sometimes be frightening. A story about the power of transcendent emotion, Remain asks us all: Can love set us free not only from our greatest sorrows, but even from the boundaries of life and death?

Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Ashley Walters (Adolescence) are attached to star in Shyamalan’s film.

October 23, 2026 happens to be the same date that Universal Pictures reserved for the next Jordan Peele movie eleven months ago. We haven’t heard anything more about the Peele project since then, but now we’re going to have to wait and see: which studio is going to move which movie? It’s highly unlikely that Warner Bros. and Universal are really going to release Shyamalan and Peele movies on the same date.

TERRESTRIAL REVEALS A DIFFERENT SHADE OF (STEVE) PINK: As director of the HOT TUB TIME MACHINE films, ACCEPTED, and ABOUT LAST NIGHT, and the co-writer of HIGH FIDELITY and GROSSE POINT BLANK, Steve Pink has made a distinctive name for himself with individualistic comedy works that ooze personality. Now, he’s exploring darker edges of his sensibilities with TERRESTRIAL, a provocative thriller with unconventional comedy and sci-fi elements, still rooted in character and behavior, but filtered through paranoia and fear. A reunion weekend spirals out of control for four college friends when the host (Jermaine Fowler, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU) a science fiction writer on the verge of newfound success, fights to maintain his sense of reality in the face of sudden, uncanny dangers. Fowler is brilliant here and is flanked by a cast that includes James Morosini (I LOVE MY DAD), Pauline Chalamet (SEX LIFE OF COLLEGE GIRLS), Edy Modica (JURY DUTY), with Rob Yang (SUCCESSION) and Brendan Hunt (TED LASSO). World Premiere.

I FELL IN LOVE WITH A Z-GRADE DIRECTOR IN BROOKLYN IS A HEARTFELT LOVE LETTER TO INDIE HORROR FILMMAKING AND UNDERGROUND CULTURE: Screen star Shina Mizuhara has lost her passion for filmmaking and is now a rude and cynical mean machine. She decides to travel to New York with her perfect boyfriend who dumps her on arrival, leaving Shina without her wallet and cellphone. Speaking only Japanese, she meets Jack, a passionate z-grade director. He and his crew will convince her to star in their next film. Prolific producer/writer/director/MacGyver Kenichi Ugana (THE GESUIDOUZ) shares his love for Independent horror filmmaking and underground culture in the smart, hilarious, and deeply touching romantic comedy I FELL IN LOVE WITH A Z-GRADE DIRECTOR IN BROOKLYN. Actress Ui Mihara (LESSON IN MURDER) delivers a glorious performance as Shina, conveying her journey to regain lost passion with moving honesty and precision. Estevan Muñoz perfectly embodies the spontaneity and charm of Jack. Fans of Jim Jarmusch, Kevin Smith, and obscure horror gems alike will adore this soulful and somehow quite bloody rom-com!
JULIE PACINO MAKES HER DIRECTORIAL DEBUT WITH THE LYNCHIAN I LIVE HERE NOW: With her feature debut I LIVE HERE NOW, Julie Pacino plunges us into a vibrant and nightmarish psychodrama that reverberate with echoes of David Lynch, Dario Argento, and the Coen brothers. Starring Lucy Fry (BRIGHT) as Rose, a woman haunted by trauma and trapped in a motel where reality unravels, the film blurs the lines between past and present, dream and waking life, captured in vivid 16mm. The film pulses with competing anxieties: the pursuit of perfection, the weight of generational trauma, and the invisible fist of capitalism tightening its grip around the necks of its characters. Featuring an all-star supporting cast including Madeline Brewer (CAM), Sheryl Lee (TWIN PEAKS), Cara Seymour (ADAPTATION.), and an exceptionally slimy Matt Rife, I LIVE HERE NOW marks the emergence of a bold new voice in genre cinema. World Premiere.

However, he who seeks peace must prepare for war… Created by writer Tato Yotsuba and manga artist Ryo Ogawa, the YA BOY KONGMIN! franchise has seen huge success as a manga, anime, and live-action TV series, so it was only a matter of time before this strange and hilarious tale found its way to cinemas, and luckily, it’s done so under the dynamic helm of director Shuhei Shibue. Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

INDIE KOREAN THRILLER THE WOMAN TRADES IN TENSION AND SUSPENSE: An innocent exchange of strawberries and a secondhand appliance takes a very dark turn for Sun-kyung when it precedes her classmate’s suspicious suicide, and puts her on the trail of a mysterious, sinister stranger. Hwang Wook, the director of the hysterical, award-winning neo-Western black comedy MASH VILLE, an acclaimed World Premiere at last year’s Fantasia, returns to the festival with a new film in a completely different genre. THE WOMAN is a riveting, character-driven psychological thriller, filled with non-stop tension and suspense, thanks to its eerie musical score and stunning cinematography, and boasting an outstanding lead performance by Han Hye-ji. THE WOMAN is yet another excellent slice of independent Korean filmmaking, by a director who needs to be on your radar. World Premiere.

BUCKLE IN AND HOLD THE FORT: A HOA turns out to be more troublesome than usual in this wildly amusing, FX-heavy freak-out about newly minted suburbanites unexpectedly forced to take part in a struggle against monstrous forces. Narratives about motley groups of ill-equipped characters battling forces of evil are a staple of the modern horror/comedy world, but HOLD THE FORT, from writer/director William Bagley, is many yuks above the norm. With very funny dialogue, outrageous circumstances, and plenty of stylish splatstick as both the human and inhuman are dispatched in gruesome, sometimes giggle-worthy ways, with heaps of spurting, splashing gore and a nonstop parade of practically-created creatures and zombies. Starring Chris Mayers (OZARK), Haley Leary, sketch comic YouTube creator Julian Smith, and Tordy Clark (GLORIOUS), and featuring a charismatic turn from veteran stunt performer Hamid-Reza Benjamin Thompson (BLACK PANTHER, AVENGERS: ENDGAME). World Premiere.

POST-APOCALYPTIC ECO-THRILLER THE WELL FORETELLS OF ENVIRONMENTAL COLLAPSE: For his narrative feature debut, the Oscar-nominated documentarian Hubert Davis (HARDWOOD, BLACK ICE) looks to the future with a bleak prediction of environmental collapse. As the world’s resources dwindle and a deadly virus keeps people apart, a family protects their fresh water source from outsiders. When a young, injured man disrupts their solitude, and their daughter’s defiance threatens to reveal their precious well to another camp led by a charismatic but steely matriarch, danger brings the two factions together in a thrilling ride. THE WELL sets up a chilling scenario of what could happen in our very near future and is executive-produced by Clement Virgo (BROTHER) and Damon D’Oliveira (WILDHOOD); and stars Arnold Pinnock (THE PORTER), Shailyn Pierre-Dixon (THE BOOK OF NEGROS), Idrissa Sanogo (ROBIN HOOD), and Canadian screen and stage royalty Sheila McCarthy (WOMEN TALKING) as the matriarch Gabriel. Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

STRANGE STUDENTS WITH STRANGER TALENTS KEEP WATCH IN HONEKO AKABANE’S BODYGUARDS: Despite her popularity, charm, kindness, and sense of justice, schoolgirl Honeko Akabane has hordes of assassins after her, although she doesn’t know it. Her biological father, whom she never met, hires a loud-mouthed young brawler to protect her without her knowledge, because Honeko’s purity and innocence must be maintained. Fortunately, he’s not alone. Winner of Best Director at the Fantasporto film festival, director Jun Ishikawa pulls out all the stops with this exhilarating and hilarious adaptation that perfectly captures the sweet madness of Masamitsu Nigatsu’s manga, brilliantly adapted by scriptwriter Hiroyuki Yatsu (Takashi Miike’s AS THE GODS WILL). The panoply of eccentric characters with formidable and sometimes disturbing talents are played marvelously by an excellent cast of young actors who maintain the light-hearted tone of this hilarious and electrifying action-comedy. North American Premiere.

FANTASY ROMCOM ANIME CHAO MAKES A BIG SPLASH: A junior designer at the leading shipbuilding company might have the key to peaceful relations between humans and merfolk. His role in achieving detente, however, suddenly becomes a lot stranger when the mermaid princess announces that she has selected Stephen as her fiancé! A 21st-century reworking of Hans Christian Andersen’s Little Mermaid tale set in a psychedelic, cyberpunk Shanghai, the frenzied and fantastical romantic comedy CHAO comes care of that most distinctive and inventive of anime factories, Studio 4ºC. The first full feature film from director Yasuhiro Aoki (BATMAN: GOTHAM KNIGHT, TWEENY WITCHES) took seven years and over 100,000 drawings to bring to life, and the hard work has paid off. CHAO is a daring and dazzling burst of animated brilliance, one that will catapult Aoki and his punky, unconventional style to the top tier of the anime world. Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.

A WILD TRIBUTE TO 1970s PORNOGRAPHY AND EROTIC THRILLERS WITH ANYTHING THAT MOVES: Shot in stunning Super 16mm, ANYTHING THAT MOVES is the steamy follow-up feature from director Alex Phillips who made audiences laugh and wretch with 2022’s ALL JACKED UP AND FULL OF WORMS, a World Premiere at Fantasia). He’s back with a surreal take on the erotic thriller that strikes the balance between riotous tribute and filthy horror in a film that follows sex worker and bike courier Liam on his adventures making clients happy with orgasms and sandwiches. Liam’s joyful existence is soon interrupted by the arrival of a serial killer, which throws his life into the realm of paranoia and conspiracy, casting a dark shadow over the city of Chicago. In the midst of its juicy gore, bizarre poetry, and switchback storytelling the film features real adult stars Nina Hartley and Ginger Lynn Allen, as well as a brilliant music score by Cue Shop. Underground section. World Premiere.

A SUPERNATURAL RIDE DEEP INTO UNEXPECTED TERRITORY: HELLCAT: A woman (Dakota Gorman) wakes in the back of a moving camper trailer with a badly infected wound. A voice (Todd Terry) from the truck towing it tells her they must reach a mysterious doctor within the hour or she’ll suffer a horrific fate. Thus begins HELLCAT, the feature debut of writer/editor/director Brock Bodell, who previously cut the mind-bending ULTRASOUND (Fantasia 2021), among others. Bodell doesn’t take a wrong turn, delivering a twisty thrill ride of strong characters, shredding tension, and real surprises that takes viewers deep into unexpected places. Featuring SNL’s James Austin Johnson as the voice of a late-night DJ on a supernatural call-in show, and gripping performances from supporting cast Jordan Mullins and Liz Atwater. World Premiere.

NECROMANCY AND BELIEF VS CORPOREAL DECAY: MOTHER OF FLIES SPELLBINDS: When a young woman faces a deadly diagnosis, she seeks dark magic from a witch in the woods… but every cure has costs. Written and directed by John and Zelda Adams and Toby Poser (The Adams Family), who also star, shot, edited, and scored, MOTHER OF FLIES is the latest creation from the filmmaking family behind such singular landmarks as THE DEEPER YOU DIG, HELLBENDER, and WHERE THE DEVIL ROAMS, each of which has World Premiered at Fantasia. Described by the filmmakers as their fairytale manipulation of the darkly shadowed, yet love-lined pathways between a human life and death, MOTHER OF FLIES is an extraordinary work of personal genre storytelling, gestated through the family’s own experiences battling and surviving cancer. It stands with the strongest of their work, a poetic, haunting, and moving film that glows with otherworldly imagination, exploring the concept of necromancy in connection with two women who have very intimate relationships with death. World Premiere.

WHOSE TALE IS TRUE IN KYRGYZ MYSTERY BURNING?: One stormy night, a fire engulfs a family home. In a nearby convenience store, neighbors gossip and speculate: was it black magic, a woman’s madness, or a man crushed by life? Director Radik Eshimov, an emerging Kyrgyz talent known for blending sharp social commentary with humor in hits like EL EMNE DEIT, steps boldly into new territory with the suspenseful BURNING. Anchored by standout performances from its three leads, Aysanat Edigeeva (TAXI), Ömürbek Izrailov (DEAL AT THE BORDER), and Kyrgyz Republic People’s Artist Kalicha Seydalieva, BURNING delivers a gripping mystery told in true RASHOMON fashion. Listen closely, sift through the lies, and decide for yourself: Who really started the fire? North American Premiere.

THE BEARDED GIRL BLENDS SIDESHOW CHARM WITH A COMING-OF-AGE STORY YOU WON’T FORGET: Jody Wilson captures the charm of a fairy tale with a Western sensibility in THE BEARDED GIRL. Cleo is ready to spread her wings and, tired of tradition and feeling like an oddball, she leaves her sheltered carnival life to find love and adventure. Starring Anwen O’Driscoll of BET and YOU CAN LIVE FOREVER as the next generation of sword-swallowing bearded women and MAD MEN’s Jessica Paré as her overbearing mother, Wilson takes her personal experience growing up in Western Canada as a nonconformist to create a confident first feature that highlights queer themes with dry humor and sensitivity. Septentrion Shadows section. World Premiere.

DREAMS AND NIGHTMARES COLLIDE IN MEXICO’S FIRST STOP-MOTION FEATURE: The task of crafting Mexico’s very first stop-motion animated feature film could not have fallen to four more worthy hands than those of Rodolfo and Arturo Ambriz. Proteges of Guillermo del Toro, the brothers gained widespread recognition with the short film REVOLTOSO (Fantasia 2016), demonstrating daring ideas and a bedeviled attention to detail. Further acclaim arrived in 2021 with FRANKELDA’S BOOK OF SPOOKS, a five-episode miniseries on Cartoon Network Latin America and HBO Max, introducing the phantom author Frankelda and her companion Herneval, an enchanted book. It turns out that the most astonishing tale the two have to tell is their own! The dazzling I AM FRANKELDA explores the challenging childhood of Francisca Imelda, and how she came to befriend Herneval, prince of the realm that lies on the other side of our dreams. Discover that world of weirdness and wonder for yourself as a milestone of animation history comes to life on Fantasia’s big screen! Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.

THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH JUMPS INTO CINEMA’S GENDER DIVIDE: Hanah’s pitch for her film school project, a satirical revenge story against men, isn’t going over well with her classmates. Especially Cheol, who accuses her of misandry (which she doesn’t deny). Cheol, meanwhile, can’t get funding for his own film because of the lack of female perspective in his script. A very fraught creative partnership begins. Yeum Moon-kyoung and Lee Jong-min star together in what’s also their feature directorial debut, THE LAST WOMAN ON EARTH a quirky and immensely entertaining comedy about the unique world of filmmaking and the challenges of gender equality in cinematic storytelling. The dynamic between Yeum and Lee, as well as the highly imaginative B-movie energy of the film-within-the-film scenes, will paste a smile on your face throughout the characters’ creative process. International Premiere.

A HAUNTING 8MM DESCENT INTO AUSTRALIA’S SURREAL UNDERBELLY: A GRAND MOCKERY, the feature debut from co-directors Adam C. Briggs and Sam Dixon, is a grimy, experimental descent into Australia’s dark underbelly, rendered in the raw textures of 8mm film. Starring Dixon as Josie, a man plagued by mental illness, addiction, and compulsion, the film follows his increasingly horrific, near-ritualistic wandering from Brisbane’s mundane outskirts to the sublime horrors of the Sunshine Coast. With a tone that veers from darkly funny to nightmarishly surreal, the film channels the disorienting psychology of its outcast protagonist. A technical triumph of underground cinema, A GRAND MOCKERY transforms the grain of 8mm into something painterly and visceral, evoking Francis Bacon’s dread-soaked visions while building a phantasmagoric world of blurred realities, hypnotic soundscapes, and cinematic obsession. At once grotesque and poetic, it’s a film that pulses with human chaos and defies categorization. Underground section. International Premiere.

MORE SPECTACULAR SPOOKINESS IN MONONOKE THE MOVIE: CHAPTER II – THE ASHES OF RAGE

After the first film’s sold-out world premiere at last year’s Fantasia, the mysterious Medicine Seller is back for another adventure as director Kenji Nakamura continues his inspired revival of his pop-psychedelic, paranormal-procedural anime phenomenon. The first chapter’s wildly inventive approach to design and technique, immersing the viewer in an overwhelming whirlwind of Edo-period iconography, earned MONONOKE THE MOVIE: PHANTOM IN THE RAIN a Satoshi Kon Award for Best Animated Feature, and its sequel is no less daring, dynamic, and visually dazzling. It digs even deeper into the secrets of a paradise poisoned by patriarchal cruelty, where women are reduced to mere vessels for the offspring of their social betters, for their own families’ cynical ambitions… or for the vengeful spirits of others wronged in the past. Animation Plus section. North American Premiere.

Fantasia has also announced that they’ve signed a three-year agreement with MELS as Presenting Sponsor. “Known for its world class soundstages and highly qualified staff, MELS is one of the largest providers of film and television services in Canada. Its turnkey service covers everything from script to screen. Most of MELS’ stages are in downtown Montreal. They have serviced major feature film productions like SCREAM VI, HOME SWEET HOME ALONE, TRANSFORMERS: RISE OF THE BEASTS, and more. The studio’s post-production services include offline editing, image finishing, a full range of sound services and one of North America’s few remaining Kodak-accredited photochemical labs for film-stock processing, supporting 16mm and 35mm. Its services extend to film restoration, deliverables, and digital archiving. MELS also has a very large mixing stage where the sound mix for Denis Villeneuve’s Oscar-winning ARRIVAL (also shot at MELS) was done. MELS is part of Quebecor Inc., a Canadian leader in telecommunications, media, and entertainment. Fantasia has been working closely with Quebecor and its various subsidiaries since 2016.”

The 29th edition of the Fantasia International Film Festival is being presented by MELS, in collaboration with Concordia University. The festival was made possible by the financial support of Telefilm Canada, the Société́ de développement des entreprises culturelles (SODEC), the Ministère du Tourisme, the Ministère des Affaires municipales et de l’Habitation, the city of Montreal, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, Tourisme Montréal, and the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC). The festival sends out a thanks to all of its private partners, friends of the event, as well as official suppliers, venues, and all participating filmmakers, sales agents, and distributors for their invaluable support.

Big casting news for Vince Vaughn‘s upcoming gangster thriller, The Bookie & the Bruiser, is upon us! Theo James (The Monkey, The White Lotus, The Gentlemen) is joining Vince Vaughn (Bad Monkey, Dragged Across Concrete, Brawl in Cell Block 99) for the upcoming feature about living life dangerously in New York City in the 1950s.

The Bookie & the Bruiser finds Vaughn reuniting with S. Craig Zahler, who directed the actor’s Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete. Like the films above, Zahler will write and direct The Bookie & the Bruiser with Academy Award-winner Anthony Katagas (12 Years a Slave, Ad Astra, Adrian Lyne’s Deep Water) producing via Keep Your Head Productions alongside Dave Caplan (Longlegs, The Monkey).

The Bookie & the Bruiser is set in 1959 New York City and features a pensive, Jewish fellow named Rivner (James) and an oversized Italian American tough named Boscolo (Vaughn). Having served in World War II, the two return as changed men, no longer fitting into their old lives. Unwilling to take orders or play by the rules of polite society, the two partner up as a bookmaker and his enforcer and run an illicit gambling operation that proves highly profitable—but dangerous. Their operation thrives until they’re caught in a violent power struggle between the Mafia and an Irish gang, forcing them into a violent fight for survival.

Theo James, who played Four in the Divergent film series, recently starred in Osgood Perkins’s adaptation of The Monkey, based on a short story by Stephen King. The darkly comedic splatter horror film was a hit with fans of the genre, grossing $68.7M worldwide. James recently wrapped production on Fuze, an action thriller directed by David Mackenzie. Fuze tells the story of an unexploded WWII bomb discovered on a busy construction site in the center of London. Chaos ensues as the military and police begin a mass evacuation against a ticking clock.

In addition to his acting work, Vince Vaughn produced Carlyle Eubank’s Broke, which starred Wyatt Russell (Thunderbolts*) and Dennis Quaid (The Substance, Running Man). In Broke, True Brandywine (Russell), a struggling rodeo rider, gets trapped in a blizzard and must confront his life choices while battling the elements for survival. We have an exclusive interview with Russell and Quaid about their new film on the site.

The fact that there was going to be a Blade reboot as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, starring Mashershala Ali in the title role, came as a huge surprise when the announcement was made at the San Diego Comic-Con back in July of 2019… but we’re coming up on the six year anniversary of that announcement, and we still haven’t seen a new Blade movie. The closest we’ve gotten is Ali making a vocal cameo as the character at the end of Eternals back in 2021. Now, we don’t know if we’re going to get a Blade reboot at all – which is baffling to David S. Goyer, who wrote the trilogy of Blade films that were released between 1998 and 2004 and also created the short-lived Blade TV series that ran for 13 episodes in 2006. His advice to Marvel Studios: “Give me a call.”

Screen Rant caught up with Goyer while he was doing press for the Apple TV+ series Murderbot, which he executive produces. When asked what Marvel Studios needs to do to pull Blade out of development hell, Goyer said, “Give me a call.” Asked if he would be interesting in writing the screenplay for the reboot, he answered, “I would. I’ve always loved the character and I love him, and I’ve been sitting on the sideline wondering, ‘What in the world is going on? Why is it taking so long?’ Because I’m a huge Marvel fan myself, and I’ve just been totally puzzled.“

Last year, we heard a rumor that Mahershala Ali is getting “increasingly frustrated” with the long development process on this one. Delroy Lindo and Aaron Pierre have been cast alongside Ali as the years have gone by, but are no longer involved, as their characters have apparently been written out. Lindo, who has a role in Sinners, recently shared some information on who his Blade character would have been. Co-star Mia Goth, who is rumored to be playing the villainous Lilith, is still attached – and she has said that she’s fine with the delays, because it shows that Marvel really cares about the project. We’ve heard that, at one point, the reboot was going to be set in the 1920s.

Writers who have worked on the script include Stacy Osei-Kuffour (Watchmen), Michael Starrbury (When They See Us), True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto (who worked with Ali on season 3 of that show), Beau DeMayo (The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf), Michael Green (Logan), and Eric Pearson, who has worked on Thor: Ragnarok, Black Widow, Thunderbolts*, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

Do you think Marvel Studios should bring David S. Goyer in to work on the Blade reboot? Share your thoughts on this one by leaving a comment below.

Andy Serkis isn’t done with The Lord of the Rings franchise yet! Today, Warner Bros. New Line Cinema announced the release date for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, opening in theaters on December 17, 2027. Andy Serkis directs The Hunt for Gollum, with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Zane Weiner producing. The Hunt for Gollum is one of two new films set in Tolkien’s Middle-earth, destined for theaters from the producing group.

Andy Serkis is getting behind the camera for The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum and reprising his iconic role as the goblin-like scene-stealer for Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The director of the second film remains a mystery. Meanwhile, Walsh and Boyens will pen the screenplay alongside Phoebe Gittins and Arty Papageorgiou. Ken Kamins and Andy Serkis executive produce with The Imaginarium’s Jonathan Cavendish.

The Lord of the Rings isn’t the only franchise getting exciting news today. Evil Dead fans rejoice because New Line is officially co-financing the next chapter of the legendary horror series with Sony after the roaring success of Evil Dead Rise. The next Evil Dead film, Evil Dead Burn, stars Souheila Yacoub (No Man’s Land, The Braves, The Salt of Tears) and will be released in North America on July 24, 2026.

Last December, Warner released the underrated anime The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, which only grossed $20.6M. In hindsight, the animation was a little funky, but the story was engrossing, and I enjoyed the new characters and story flow. Oh, well. As Les Claypool once said, “They can’t all be zingers.”

Where do you stand on the concept of a new Lord of the Rings movie focusing on Gollum? Will the film feature beloved characters or introduce new warriors to the famed franchise? If anyone can bring Gollum to the screen in a worthwhile way, it’s Andy Serkis. Are you tired of the Lord of the Rings franchise, or do you like the idea of another live-action adventure on the big screen? In the comments section below, let us know your thoughts about The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.

Bareback bronc riding is one of the most dangerous and physically crippling sports ever conceived. It takes a special kind of person to put themselves in harm’s way as unpredictable beasts leap, kick, and trample around an arena, their only goal being to shed foreign weight from their massive bodies. In Carlyle Eubank’s Broke, True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), he is a bareback bronc rider pushed beyond his limits as his eroding career, failing health, and shattered relationships haunt his quest to survive a battle with the elements.

Leading up to the release of Broke, we sat down with Wyatt Russell (who’s currently lighting up the screen as U.S. Agent in Thunderbolts) and Dennis Quaid (George Brandywine, True’s father) to discuss Eubank’s emotional film and all the mental gymnastics required to help make it. During our talk, we talked about the harsh weather conditions Russell endured while shooting a portion of the film, if and how Dennis Quaid cools down after a heated exchange with his Broke co-star, and the duo’s heightened level of respect for real-deal bareback bronc riders.

Broke is a contemporary western following the story of True Brandywine (Wyatt Russell), a bareback bronc rider clinging to his fading rodeo career. When True gets trapped in a freak spring blizzard, he must battle injuries, illness, and the bitter cold. While fighting for his survival, True is forced to face his choices and the circumstances that led him to his tenuous situation. Joining Wyatt Russell and Dennis Quaid are Auden Thornton, Mary McDonnell, and Johnny Berchtold as primary cast members.

Broke hits digital and select theaters on May 6, 2025.

After Netflix released a batch of preview images from the Charlize Theron action sequel The Old Guard 2 a couple of weeks ago, the streamer now unveils the new trailer and one-sheet for the upcoming film. The Old Guard 2 is due to hit streaming on July 2. The trailer looks pretty nifty, with Theron’s now mortal Andy taking on The Bride herself, Uma Thurman, in a cool-looking sword fight!

Based on a graphic novel series created by Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández, The Old Guard was scripted by Rucka and directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood. The film introduced viewers to a covert group of tight-knit mercenaries with a mysterious inability to die who have fought to protect the mortal world for centuries. When the team is recruited to take on an emergency mission and their extraordinary abilities are suddenly exposed, it’s up to Andy and Nile, the newest soldier to join their ranks, to help the group eliminate the threat of those who seek to replicate and monetize their power by any means necessary.

Rucka wrote the screenplay for the sequel with Sarah L. Walker and serves as executive producer. The Old Guard 2 is being produced by David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Don Granger of Skydance, Theron, Beth Kono, and AJ Dix of Denver and Delilah, and Marc Evans of Marc Evans Productions. Prince-Bythewood is also on board as producer, but passed the helm over to Victoria Mahoney, who has previously directed episodes of multiple TV shows, including You and Lovecraft Country, and was also the second unit director on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

Theron is joined in the cast by fellow returning Old Guard cast members KiKi Layne, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Luca Marinelli, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Veronica Ngo, as well as new additions Uma Thurman and Henry Golding. The sequel has the following logline: Andy and her team of immortal warriors return to protect humanity from a formidable new enemy who threatens their existence. Here’s the full synopsis: Andy (Charlize Theron) and her team of immortal warriors are back, with a renewed sense of purpose in their mission to protect the world. With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years. Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence. Directed by Victoria Mahoney, and also starring Uma Thurman, The Old Guard 2 is an emotional, adrenaline-pumping sequel, based on the world created by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez.

The Conjuring film franchise is set to come to an end with the fourth installment, The Conjuring: Last Rites, which Warner Bros. has scheduled for a theatrical release on September 5, 2025 release – and with that date now just a few months away, a teaser trailer has dropped online. You can check it out in the embed above.

Up until this week, we didn’t have any plot info on The Conjuring: Last Rites, but Entertainment Weekly was finally able to draw some information out of the filmmakers. They shared that the film is set in 1986, five years after the events of The Devil Made Me Do It. The Warrens have retired from the exorcist business, largely due to Ed’s heart attack, the one sustained during the demonic happenings of the third film. They still hit the university circuit, presenting talks at various schools, but even those opportunities are drying up. Of course, certain events force them back into the fold one last time. They added that the case at the center of Last Rites is one of the more famous events from the Warrens’ career: the Smurl family haunting. According to the New England Society of Psychic Research — the occult-investigating organization now run by Ed and Lorraine’s real-life daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Tony Spera (both of whom cameo in the film) — Janet and Jack Smurl moved their family into a duplex on Chase Street in West Pittston, Pa., in the 1970s. In the years that followed, the Smurls, including their young daughters and Jack’s parents, claimed to experience supernatural occurrences ranging from strange odors and voices all the way to ghostly molestations. The Smurls’ appearances on TV programs such as Larry King Live and Entertainment Tonight made it one of the more publicized cases of supernatural activity, but it also gave skeptics ammunition to say they sold out for the public spotlight. The story became the subject of the book The Haunted: One Family’s Nightmare (1986) and a 1991 made-for-TV movie starring Sally Kirkland.

Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise the roles of paranormal investigators / married couple Ed and Lorraine Warren. They’re joined in the cast by Rebecca Calder (Wrath of Man) and Elliot Cowan (Foundation) was Janet and Jack Smurl, with the rest of the Smurl family being played by Kíla Lord Cassidy (Heather), Beau Gadsdon (Dawn), Tilly Walker (Carin), Molly Cartwright (Shannon), Peter Wight (Grandpa Smurl), and Kate Fahy (Grandma Smurl). Mia Tomlinson (The Lost Pirate Kingdom) takes on the role of the Warrens’ daughter Judy, who is now an adult in her 20s. Ben Hardy (X-Men: Apocalypse) plays Judy’s boyfriend Tony, and Orion Smith and Madison Lawlor play younger versions of Ed and Lorraine in flashbacks.

Michael Chaves, who previously directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II, and the Conjuring Universe-adjacent The Curse of La Llorona, is at the helm of The Conjuring: Last Rites, working from a screenplay written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who also wrote The Conjuring 2 and The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, and The Autopsy of Jane Doe writers Ian Goldberg and Richard Naing. Franchise producers James Wan and Peter Safran are producing the film, with Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Natalia Safran, John Rickard, Hans Ritter and Johnson-McGoldrick serving as executive producers. Wan also crafted the story with Johnson-McGoldrick.

In the build-up to the release of Evil Dead Rise (read our review right HERE) in 2023, Evil Dead franchise rights holders Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, and Rob Tapert let it be known that they were already looking forward to producing more entries in the series, with Campbell revealing they were hoping to make a new sequel / spin-off every two or three years. Last year, they proved their commitment to this idea by hiring Sébastien Vaniček, who made his feature directorial debut on the French horror film Vermin, a.k.a. Infested, to write and direct a new installment in the franchise. And now the project has a cast member: Deadline reports that Souheila Yacoub, a Swiss former rhythmic gymnast who won the Miss Suisse Romande beauty pageant before getting her acting career started, has signed on to star in the film. We had previously heard that this movie would be called Evil Dead Burn and was aiming for a 2026 release, and Deadline was able to confirm that Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema will be giving the film a theatrical release on July 24, 2026.

New Line Cinema and Sony Pictures are co-financing the film, which Vaniček will be directing from a screenplay he wrote with Florent Bernard. Sony will distribute internationally, with Canal Plus distributing in the UK and Metropolitan distributing in France. Details on the story Vaniček will be telling in Evil Dead Burn have not been revealed, but he has said that he has complete creative control on his Evil Dead movie, and intends to give it a French twist.

Franchise creator Sam Raimi is producing the film alongside Rob Tapert, while Romel Adam, Jose Canas, Lee Cronin, and Bruce Campbell serve as executive producers. A while back, Bruce Campbell told AV Club, “It’s all about the books now. It has nothing to do with (franchise hero Ash) or any particular character. In Army of Darkness, we first saw three books. So we know there are three out there, and none of them are any good. It’s about: where does that darn book wind up, who gets it, and what happens? But the universe is the same. It’s about innocent people with no special skills having to fight for their very lives. … I think the stories will progress a little more now. We’re going to try and do them more like every two or three years rather than every 10 years. It’s also the first time Sam is working with his brother Ivan to create an overall Bible that will give future writers and directors an idea of where this thing should go next to potentially tie in some of these stories. So I think it’s going to get a little more tied in as the years go by. But because it’s all about the books. It could be a book in the past, a book in the future. It’s yet to be determined.“

Sam Raimi made his feature directorial debut with the original The Evil Dead, which introduced Campbell as iconic hero Ash Williams. Ash returned for Evil Dead II, Army of Darkness, and the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series, with Raimi directing the films and the first episode of the show. After seeing a short film directed by Fede Alvarez, the Evil Dead rights holders gave him the chance to make his feature directorial debut with the Ash-less 2013 Evil Dead. Then Lee Cronin was hired to make the Ash-less Evil Dead Rise based on the strength of his own feature debut, the 2019 film The Hole in the Ground. So Sébastien Vaniček being hired to make the next Evil Dead movie right after entering the feature world with Vermin / Infested is very on brand for this franchise.

Vaniček’s Evil Dead Burn isn’t the only Evil Dead movie in development. Two months after he was hired to make his movie, the rights holders also hired Francis Galluppi, who just made his feature directorial debut with the crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County, to write and direct his own Evil Dead flick. We haven’t heard any more about that one. An animated series follow-up to Ash vs. Evil Dead is also in the works.

Souheila Yacoub made her screen acting debut with episodes of the French TV series Plus belle la vie in 2016 and has gone on to have roles in Climax, Les affamés, Les sauvages, The Salt of Tears, No Man’s Land, The Braves, A Brighter Tomorrow, H24, Rise, Before We Collapse, Making Of, The Balconettes, Planet B, and Dune: Part Two, where she played the character Shishakli.

Are you glad to hear that Evil Dead Burn is on track for a 2026 release? What do you think of Souheila Yacoub signing on to star? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

After Cobra Kai had its high school characters finally graduate after six years of the series, the newest entry in the continuing story of Daniel LaRusso is surprisingly compact, especially by modern movie standards. In an age where big-budget summer movies regularly clock in at over two hours (and prestige films flirt with the three-hour mark), according to the BBFC, Karate Kid: Legends will have a runtime of 94 minutes. Runtimes of this caliber are usually commonplace for comedies, but for a new installment of a long-running franchise, it’s surprisingly brief. Even the 1984 original ran just over 2 hours.

Of course, an enjoyable movie doesn’t have to be super long, but it will remain to be seen if the film doesn’t feel rushed or underdeveloped. After all, some classic Jackie Chan films equate to similar lengths, and the director of Karate Kid: Legends claims that this film will feel like an early Jackie Chan movie. Director Jonathan Entwistle says the new film takes its inspiration from past Jackie Chan flicks. “Ben (Wang) was fully training every day with the Chinese stunt team,” Entwistle said. “He knew that I wanted the martial arts in the movie to feel like an early Jackie Chan film, and that’s something we tried really hard to do. We used a lot of classic Hong Kong wirework.“

It’s not just the thrilling action that made Jackie Chan so great, but also his ability to work humor into the fights. “There’s a humour to the way the choreography unfolds,” Entwistle explained. “Something that Jackie — and the team — taught us was, ‘What’s the narrative for the fight? Does he pick up a thing off the floor and use that?’ We’re so used to seeing fights done in a certain way, VFX-heavy fight augmentation, the Marvel style of fighting. It was important for me to bring back an in-camera martial-arts approach.“

The official synopsis reads: “In Karate Kid: Legends, after a family tragedy, kung fu prodigy Li Fong (Ben Wang) is uprooted from his home in Beijing and forced to move to New York City with his mother. Li struggles to let go of his past as he tries to fit in with his new classmates, and although he doesn’t want to fight, trouble seems to find him everywhere. When a new friend needs his help, Li enters a karate competition – but his skills alone aren’t enough. Li’s kung fu teacher Mr. Han (Jackie Chan) enlists original Karate Kid Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for help, and Li learns a new way to fight, merging their two styles into one for the ultimate martial arts showdown.“

For comparison, here are the runtimes for the other films in the franchise: The Karate Kid (1984), 127 minutes; The Karate Kid Part II, 113 minutes; The Karate Kid Part III, 111 minutes; The Next Karate Kid, 107 minutes; The Karate Kid (2010), 140 minutes.

Karate Kid: Legends will hit theaters on May 30. What do you think of this one having the shortest runtime of the bunch?

Thunderbolts is pretty much guaranteed to top the box office this week, but will good word-of-mouth keep it from a huge second week decline?

The post Box Office Predictions: Thunderbolts will hang on to first place (but how much will it fall?) appeared first on JoBlo.

Despite good reviews and solid word-of-mouth (an A-minus CinemaScore), Thunderbolts had a relatively weak opening for a Marvel movie. In fact, when the final box office stats came in on Sunday night, Thunderbolts ended up posting a softer-than-expected launch, with the final $74 million total actually under what Shang-Chi opened with – and that was a movie that came out during the height of the pandemic. To prop up the second weekend, Marvel and Disney have actually more-or-less renamed the film, with it now carrying the title The New Avengers in many markets, which plays off the movie’s final reveal and could be considered something of a spoiler.

But will this new hook be enough to keep the film from falling more than 60% in its second weekend at the box office? Given the soft opening, a more than 50% decline would be disastrous. Thunderbolts will likely post a $30 million weekend, which will be considered a disappointment by many.

Why so low? Simple – Sinners is still the word-of-mouth movie everyone wants to see. This will likely be Sinners’ last $20 million + weekend as it will have new competition from the buzzy Final Destination: Bloodlines next weekend. As such, I think a $22 million weekend is in the cards as it closes in on a $200 million-plus running domestic total. A Minecraft Movie should make about $8 million in third place, with The Accountant 2 in fourth place with $5 million.

Fifth place will be interesting, as two indies are opening wide this weekend, with Shudder’s Clown in a Cornfield and Vertical’s Josh Hartnett-led action flick, Fight or Flight. Both have been well-received, and if either manages to open over $4 million, it will likely be seen as a little victory for genre fare. My inkling is that Clown in a Cornfield might have the edge based on the notoriety of the book series.

Here are my predictions:

Thunderbolts: $30 million

Sinners: $22 million

A Minecraft Movie: $8 million

The Accountant 2: $5 million

Clown in a Cornfield: $4 million

What are you seeing this weekend? Let us know in the comments!

Fresh off of starring in the thriller Drop, which received some good word-of-mouth and an 8/10 review from JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray but still didn’t manage to make much money at the box office (hopefully it’s having more success with its digital release), Meghann Fahy has signed on to star in another thriller, one called Banquet. This time the thrills are going to be of the supernatural sort, and Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is at the helm.

Back in 2020, Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia made his feature directorial debut (after a couple decades of making short films) with the thriller The Platform, which was released through the Netflix streaming service. You can read my very positive review of that film at THIS LINK, but the gist of it is that I was very impressed and was left eager to see what Gaztelu-Urrutia would make next. He was assembling a film called Rich Flu before the 2023 Hollywood strikes, but it turned out that his second movie was a sequel to his debut, The Platform 2. Deadline notes that The Platform reached 56 million views in its first month of release, putting it in the all-time top ten most watched films on Netflix at the time. The Platform 2 was the most-watched film on Netflix in its first two weeks and remained in the top 10 for five weeks.

While Gaztelu-Urrutia wrote both of the Platform films with David Desola and Pedro Rivero, for Banquet he’ll be working from a screenplay by Sam Steiner (Fingernails). Deadline lets us know that Fahy is taking on the role of Jenny Cochrane, a woman whose perfect life is shattered by the return of her estranged son, which reawakens a terrifying secret buried in her bloodline.

Lewis Taylor is producing the film for Film Transmission, with James Harris doing the same for Tea Shop Productions. XYZ Films is financing and will launch international sales at the Cannes market this month. CAA Media Finance is co-repping the U.S. rights. Harry Potter director David Yates serves an executive producer under his banner Wychwood Media. Florian Zeller and Federica Sainte-Rose are executive producing for Blue Morning Pictures. Banquet is expected to begin production in October in the U.K.

What do you think of Meghann Fahy and Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia teaming up for the supernatural thriller Banquet? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Dakota Johnson is a matchmaker who gets more than she bargained for in the new trailer for Materialists. The rom-com-with-a-twist comes from the writer/director of the Academy Award-nominated film Past Lives. The film was first announced in February 2024, with producers Christine Vachon and Pamela Koffler of Killer Films attached to the project, along with David Hinojosa of the 2AM production company. A new trailer from A24 just dropped.

Materialists stars Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans, and Pedro Pascal. The very brief plot synopsis reads, “A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.” The newly released trailer is a major throwback to the style of trailers from the 80s and 90s, with very few of the usual modern-day trailer “hit” sound effects, Madonna’s “Material Girl” plays throughout and it even features a trailer narrator. Pedro Pascal takes a break from his usual intense action/dramatic roles for a change of pace with this film as he swoops in as a romantic lead to sweep Johnson off her feet. However, it seems that almost immediately, things are disrupted by Chris Evans’ character and the love triangle is formed.

Johnson is also set to appear in the horror film Verity with Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway. Hathaway’s character is Verity Crawford, a famous author who is unable to finish her latest thriller novel after a car accident leaves her badly injured and incapacitated. So her husband Jeremy offers a struggling writer named Lowen a huge sum of money to complete the remaining books in the series. Lowen accepts the gig but uncovers dark secrets in the process — including an unfinished manuscript that hints at chilling admissions about Verity and her family’s past — leaving Lowen to determine if Verity is a gifted fictionist or deranged psychopath. Johnson will be playing struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh, with Hartnett as Verity’s husband, Jeremy Crawford.

Meanwhile, you can also catch Pascal in the new season of the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us. Set five years after the events of the first season, The Last of Us season 2 will follow Pascal as Joel and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they are drawn into conflict with each other and a world even more dangerous and unpredictable than the one they left behind. In addition to Pascal and Ramsey, The Last of Us season 2 features Kaitlyn Dever as Abby, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Rutina Wesley as Maria, Isabela Merced as Dina, Young Mazino as Jesse, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Catherine O’Hara joins the cast in a new pivotal role. Jeffrey Wright will also reprise his role as Issac, which he played in The Last of Us: Part II video game. The character is the ruthless leader of the Washington Liberation.

We’ll probably never get to see the performance Leslie Grace gave in the Batgirl movie that was scrapped by Warner Bros. as a tax write-off – but Grace’s acting career is moving forward, and Variety reports that she has just signed on to star in a survival thriller called Propel, in which her character will get swallowed by a whale.

Described as “Gravity meets 127 Hours underwater,” Propel is about a diver’s fight for survival after a boating accident leaves her for dead. Grace will be playing Kate Acosta, a commercial diver who is swallowed by a giant sperm whale during a routine commercial dive. Trapped in a living prison and gasping for air, Kate must confront both real-life monsters of the deep and her inner demons as a desperate fight for survival and salvation unfolds.

Felipe Vargas (Rosario) will be directing the film from a screenplay that was written by Jeremy Marwick and said to be inspired by real events. Javier Chapa and Phillip Braun are producing for Mucho Mas Media, with Derrick Eppich doing the same for Empirical Evidence. Filming is expected to take place later this year.

Altitude is handling international distribution sales and will be introducing the project to potential buyers at the Cannes market. They describe Propel as a “pulse-pounding elemental thriller that will leave you breathless” and “a white-knuckle thriller that explores family, resilience and rebirth.“

Propel isn’t the only whale thriller we’ve heard about recently, as Renny Harlin is set to direct a film called Black Tides, inspired by the orca attacks that have occurred off the Atlantic coast of Spain and Portugal in recent years, and Brian Duffield will be directing Whalefall, based on the Daniel Kraus novel, which is also about a diver being swallowed by a whale.

In addition to the ill-fated Batgirl movie, Leslie Grace’s acting credits include In the Heights, In the Summers, and The Thicket.

Deliverance is seen as the benchmark for backwoods, fish out of water thrillers (and yes, we cover thrillers too for all you folks in the comments that will say this isn’t horror) but it’s not alone. While it’s certainly true that the John Boorman 1972 thriller had more success with its 46 million dollar return on a 2-million-dollar budget and 3 Oscar nominations including Best Picture, it may have been bested 9 years later. Southern Comfort has just as good of a pedigree in front of and behind the camera and continues to gain a better and better reputation 44 years later. The horrors found within this movie permeate the entire run time and include one of the most intense and nerve wracking final 20 minutes ever put to the screen that will sit with you long after the credits. Don’t mess with the locals as we revisit Southern Comfort.

Let’s start with director/writer/producer Walter Hill. Hill is a legend in Hollywood on both the big and small screens. Starting in the early 70s as a writer he wrote the screenplay for Sam Peckinpah’s The Getaway before a string of popular hits that he would both write and direct like Hard Times, The Driver, and The Warriors. These classics would go on to inspire countless imitators and homages, but it was his first producing credit that would make its mark for decades to come with Alien which he would also have uncredited script additions for. He would go on to help with that franchise in various roles including as a writer on the much maligned Alien 3 and as a producer all the way up to 2024’s Alien: Romulus. He would later give us greats like The Long Riders, 48 Hours, Extreme Prejudice and help produce both Deadwood and Tales from the Crypt for HBO. It’s that horror pedigree that helps us ease into today’s movie.

In the late 1970s, Walter Hill and fellow producer David Giler had a deal in place with 20th Century Fox to “acquire and develop interesting and commercial scripts that could be made on a modest budget with a high return on investment.” One of these scripts ended up being Alien and the other was Southern Comfort that he originally wrote in 1976 as The Prey. Giler and Hill hired a screenwriter named Michael Kane and when he submitted it the two producers would rewrite it with all 3 men receiving credit. Kane wouldn’t have a ton else on his resume but did write additional uncredited dialogue for Jaws 3D and give us the screenplay for the Tom Cruise vehicle All the Right Moves. Producing partner Giler isn’t nearly as well known as Hill but he was just as instrumental with the development of the Alien franchise and Tales from the Crypt as his partner and friend.

Southern Comfort, if just described by someone to you, sounds derivative of Deliverance, but it’s got a lot more depth and has a Vietnam war allegory that Hill, like Romero and Night of the Living Dead’s casting of Duane Jones as a lead, denies as intentional. One of the theatrical posters saying “not since Deliverance” doesn’t help the comparison but this is no copy. The movie opens in a bayou in Louisiana where a squad of National Guard reserve soldiers are preparing for a weekend operation as practice. The squad is led by Poole, played by Peter Coyote, and also includes Spencer, Hardin, and Reece who happen to be played by Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe, and Fred Ward. Coyote has been around forever and is great as Keys in E.T. and of course showed up in Sphere which is why we are covering this movie today. I loved seeing all the shoutouts for Southern Comfort after I mentioned it.

Fred Ward will forever be Earl Bassett in the first two Tremors movies but if you haven’t seen Remo Williams, please treat yourself to that beauty. Keith Carradine is my favorite of that acting family that also includes Robert and John. The Oscar winner worked with Hill often and was a great Wild Bill on Deadwood amongst many other roles. Finally of the big three Powers Boothe was selected by Hill after he saw him play Jim Jones but he’s amazing everywhere especially Tombstone and Frailty. The rest of the unit is played by fun character actors, including T.K. Carter from The Thing, Lewis Smith from Buckaroo Banzai, and Alan Autry from the TV series version of In the Heat of the Night. Boothe’s Hardin is over from the Texas reserves and isn’t impressed by what he sees from the leadership or the rest of the team even if he does get along with Spencer. The crew gets lost early in its journey to get across the landscape and decides to start trouble by taking some Cajun boats that they have intentions of returning.

The group of jokers freely uses their blank ammunition like college kids would joke and that comes back to bite them immediately when a group of Cajuns is glaring at them for stealing the boats. They try to yell to them that the boats will be returned but Stuckey stupidly fires his machine gun at them only to have return fire with real bullets kill Poole. The rest of the squad starts to fall apart emotionally and mentally with Reece also revealing that he brought real ammo, something that is known from a couple other men. The lack of leadership turns the men against each other in some cases and crazy in others. They are hunted by faceless assailants, dogs, and beset by traps that include falling trees and raising spike traps. They have become strangers in a strange land and are outnumbered and outgunned. Hill knew that the comparisons to Vietnam would come up and told the cast and crew that he saw it and didn’t want to hear about it for the whole shoot. It’s hard not to see and adds an angle to the movie that gives it legs that keep making the movie more and more relevant.

The group finds its way to a trapper’s house but find that he only speaks French and is unable and unwilling to help them. One of the men, Bowden, goes full Stallone from First Blood and blows up the shack that was full of food and weapons the rest of the men could have used before becoming catatonic the remainder of the movie. After that act of aggression, it becomes all-out war and confusion with Hardin killing Reece in self-defense, traps and quicksand killing a couple others, and the Cajun hunters picking off the rest until only Spencer and Hardin remain. They get out of the main swamp and are picked up by a friendly couple and taken to a seemingly friendly town, but everything is not what it seems.

Before getting to the riveting final 20 minutes, let’s talk about how horrifying this movie can be at times. The music, by frequent Hill collaborator Ry Cooder, follows the tone of the movie wonderfully. It’s jovial when times are good and becomes farcical in its tone when things fall apart. It adds a sense of confusion and trepidation that we see on the faces of the reserve soldiers as they stumble their way through increasingly dangerous locations. Something I hadn’t noticed until this viewing is how the Cajun hunters, at least the ones in the swamps, are like slashers in the fact that they have that Voorhees ability to teleport around and be where they need to be to kill off the soldiers. Even their camp where the boats are taken from feels like a den that the final girl finds with all their weapons and trophies. They are unstoppable and have a mysticism about them that is terrifying and inevitable. When we run into the one that the team had captured and later gets away, he speaks more than enough English to tell the final two friends that they are in over their heads. Even Bowden who has gone crazy halfway through the movie has a death that sticks with you.

Hardin and Spencer find him hung and we never get a clear answer if he did it to himself or it was bayou justice. The way most of the crew dies is down right horrifying too. While it was Stuckey’s stupid decision to shoot at the Cajuns that started the whole nightmare scenario, you still feel terrible for him and horrified as his wide eyes sink into the quicksand. What’s possibly worse is when Simms is shot while running away and mutters “I didn’t do anything wrong. I’m not supposed to be here.” This may not be a horror movie, but it is damn horrifying. Back to Hardin and Spencer. They get to a very friendly village where they are offered food and drinks but just feels off. From the people that may or may not be watching them to the two pigs in cages waiting to be slaughtered mirroring their current situation, everything is tense. The happy music here finally betrays what we see on screen and it’s not until Hardin wanders off the grounds and runs into a surly looking Cajun played by Sonny Landham that we finally know how much trouble the two are in.

They run and fight their way out with everything they have and finally following the helicopter to the road and a truck that is only revealed at the very last minute to be a U.S. military one. They are presumably saved, and we get a happy ending that didn’t seem possible just minutes before. Interestingly in an Iranian version of the film that appeared in the late 80s under the name Operation Lagoon, the soldiers were openly against the Vietnam war and were sent by the government to be killed by hunters in the bayou. Even at the end when the two remaining soldiers seemingly escape, the movie fades out to gunshots after we see the U.S. Army logo on the side, implying that the government had the survivors killed even though they made it out of the swamps. That’s grim.

Southern Comfort wasn’t the success that Deliverance was, nor did it come close to the other script presented to Fox was in Alien. It made less than 3 million on its 7-million-dollar budget in the U.S. but did really well in Europe, something that Hill was always shocked by. Reviews were mostly nice to it with Roger Ebert giving it 3 stars and saying it was a remarkably well-made film but nearly everyone compared it to the previous decade’s Deliverance. It holds up remarkably well and toes a great line between slow burn and action while giving audiences a lot to think about. Vinegar Syndrome just gave it its due with an outstanding 4K release that begs to be explored and reexamined. Southern Comfort is an uncomfortable look at what happens when mistakes are made, and a group of people begin to fall apart in a part of the world that they are grossly in over their heads. It deserves a rewatch or a first time view for people looking for a non-traditional horror experience that will stay with you long after the survivors escape.

Good news for American Pie fans. Two sequels from the theatrically released entries will be getting new physical media releases. The bad news is that these particular releases are from a British distributor, and the normal Blu-rays are Region B. However, American Pie 2 will get an Ultra-HD 4K remastering on a region-free Blu-ray so North American consumers can enjoy it as well. According to Blu-ray.com, 88 Films is releasing the first sequel and the last sequel to the 1999 teen virginity comedy. Both Blu-rays are due to hit retailers in June.

The description for American Pie 2 reads,
“The characters you love are back! One year after the prom-night misadventures immortalized in American Pie, the entire gang has reunited for the summer. Now, an innocent-looking beach house will be transformed into the ultimate party-central. Five guys will discover the powerful bonds of friendship… and Super Glue. Five girls will explore the mysteries of love… and the Rule of Three. And from late-night band camp encounters to some very accommodating next-door neighbors, this will be one summer vacation none of them will ever forget.

This first follow-up to the coming-of-age classic has now been remastered in 4K HDR10 and Dolby Vision from the original negatives, exclusively by 88 Films.”

Alan Cumming is not abiding by the usual Marvel secrecy with his return as Nightcrawler for Avengers: Doomsday. The ambitious new entry will not only attempt to harken back to the MCU’s glory days, but it will attempt to adapt the Doctor Doom character in a more faithful way, plus include some multiverse action with Fox’s X-Men cast returning. This is only Cumming’s second foray into the superhero world after he turned down the chance to cameo in X-Men: The Last Stand. However, the seasoned actor isn’t quite as tight-lipped as Marvel’s actors usually are with film details.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Cumming appeared on an interview with Buzzfeed UK, where he may have spilt a detail about fighting Mr. Fantastic from the upcoming The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He explained, “I was learning stunts yesterday for some fight scene and I just think, I’m 60 years old. Twenty-three years ago, I played that superhero. I was kind of old for a superhero even then. And now I’m back doing it. And that, to me, is hilarious.” Then, he continues,

I’m sort of learning these fights and I’m like, ‘What? Who am I fighting with?’ And they said, ‘You’re hitting Pedro Pascal against the head,’ or something.”

It isn’t a rarity in the Avengers movies that our heroes come to fight each other in a multitude of situations despite being on the same side, so it stands to assume that the X-Men and Fantastic Four will come to some blows during the film.

Recently, Cumming commented on the makeup process for Nightcrawler and how it had advanced considerably since X2. Cumming would pass on X-Men: The Last Stand since he didn’t find the transformation into the character worth it for such a short screen time as it would take over four hours. This is not the case anymore. He explained on Today, “I’ve had some makeup tests already for the role, but what’s great about it was that before it was about four and a half hours to apply it, but now it’s only 90 minutes.” He added, “Before, all of the tattoos were done by hand. They hadn’t decided on them before we started filming. Now, they just stick onto my face. It’s a game-changer. I’m going back to being a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems really lovely.”

Sometimes a torch is tough to pass up, especially when your name is so tied to it. But David Zucker made the attempt to lend a hand at sprucing up the script for the upcoming sequel The Naked Gun. After he was turned away, he was offered nothing more than a producer credit. This was all more than a decade ago — and Zucker is still miffed that there’s even another Naked Gun hitting the streets.

David Zucker — who co-wrote the original Naked Gun trilogy and directed the first two (not to mention co-creating the original Police Squad! series) recalled that those moving forward without him may have wanted nothing to do with him at his age. “I read the script, and I politely told them I wasn’t going to put my name on it. They wanted nothing from me except my name. They assume I’m old and using a walker and I can’t do it anymore. I guess talent leaves after age 40 in Hollywood.”

The rift between David Zucker and Paramount — who of course produced the Naked Gun movies along with Airplane! and Top Secret! — stems partly from them rejecting another Naked Gun he had pitched called Naked: Impossible, which would have found someone continuing the story as Frank Drebin’s son. This, to Zucker, would have introduced enough of a twist to generate interest. And while the new Naked Gun has a similar idea in having Frank Drebin, Jr. lead, Zucker did take issue that it stars Liam Neeson, who, at 73, is a few years older than Leslie Nielsen was in his final outing as Lieutenant Drebin.

Zucker, too, imagined turning the Naked Gun series on its head with Naked: Impossible due to the fact that the genre in which it originally spoofed (police procedurals) are a rarity nowadays. “We didn’t even want to do it in a police station. They don’t make cop movies anymore. When you do parody, you’ve got to spoof something current.”

Having David Zucker and brother Jerry (fellow ZAZ member Jim Abrahams died last year) lend their support to The Naked Gun would have been a good get on the press circuit, but it turns out they may not need it at all since it looks pretty damn funny and just the sort of comedy to get people into theaters.

What do you make of David Zucker’s take on the new Naked Gun? Are his gripes reasonable or does he come off bitter?

There was a time when Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis was the most anticipated movie there was. And we all kind of knew that it would be a work of genius or a complete dud (that’s just kind of how Coppola operates). Unfortunately for Coppola – who sunk well over $100 million of his own cash into it – Megalopolis came and went. Now, nobody can find it.

Just to give you an idea of how much Megalopolis bombed, the movie had a budget of at least $120 million (again, we’re talking Coppola’s own wine money) and grossed less than $15 million, hitting theaters in September 2024 and departing the following month. One would expect Lionsgate to have at least dumped it to streaming by this point but it is nowhere to be found. And this seems to come down to Coppola himself.

As reported by THR, Francis Ford Coppola is apparently disinterested in ever having Megalopolis be seen on a TV, computer or iPhone. As it stated, “Instead of a digital release, Coppola is taking the film on tour. Days after the AFI tribute, he boarded a flight to Boston for a sold-out screening at the Coolidge Theater. Later this month, he’s headed to Detroit.”

This is a shift in method for Coppola considering we actually had – for an extremely brief period – Megalopolis available to stream on Amazon and Apple TV+. But it was since taken down as Coppola embarks on his tour to screen his latest – and perhaps final – film.

In a way, I respect that Francis Ford Coppola is taking complete ownership of Megalopolis. After all, this is his film, something that had been developing in one form or another since the days of making Apocalypse Now – we’re talking nearly 50 years of development hell. And with its own hellish release, one can see why he’s ensuring the film is only seen as he intends it. Really, what does he have to lose? On the other hand, those of us who didn’t see Megalopolis (and we’ve all seen the box office numbers, so there are a lot of us) now have a much slimmer chance of doing so. Granted, the reviews don’t exactly hail it as the masterpiece we all wanted it to be, but the broader opportunity should still be there.

How do you feel about Coppola’s decision to control the release of Megalopolis?

The Conjuring franchise has been quite the success for Warner Bros., but Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) will be calling it quits with The Conjuring: Last Rites. As this will likely be the last we see of the Warrens, The Conjuring producer Peter Safran told Entertainment Weekly that they “toyed with the idea” of going all out with an Avengers-style finale that would have included every demon they’ve fought throughout the series.

“When we were developing the movie, we always called it Conjuring: Endgame because it was a culmination of a great story that audiences had been with,” Safran said. “I’m not saying that our movie is the same as the Avengers: Endgame run of movies, but there was something about building an audience through this storytelling mechanism, through Ed and Lorraine Warren. Knowing that Last Rites was going to be the last one made us put a lot into it to make sure that it was an incredibly satisfying experience and a really emotional experience.“

Michael Chaves, who directed The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, The Nun II, and the upcoming Last Rites, added, “Even as we were developing it, we were throwing a bunch of ideas out: ‘How shamelessly big can we make it?’ ‘How epic can we make it?’ ‘Is this the culmination of all the demons coming to face them?’ Even though we entertained that idea for a minute, we stepped away. I felt strongly that the biggest, most emotional story we could tell was the most personal story.“

However, although The Conjuring: Last Rites won’t be an Avengers-style showdown, Safran did tease that some familiar faces will show up. “Without any spoilers, we took the opportunity to maybe bring back some fan favorites,” Safran said. “You can watch this movie never having seen a Conjuring movie and have a totally satisfying viewing experience, but if you’re a little bit more of a dedicated Conjuring fan, there’s a lot in this for you that maybe a more casual viewer wouldn’t necessarily pick out.“

The Conjuring: Last Rites takes place in 1986 and follows Ed and Lorraine as they come out of retirement to investigate the Smurl family haunting. The trailer will be released tomorrow, so watch out for that. The film will hit theaters on September 5th. Phase 2 of the franchise is already being considered.

According to Deadline, Jez Butterworth (Ford v Ferrari), Peter Straughan (Conclave), and Jack Thorne (Adolescence) have been tapped to write The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event, directed by Sam Mendes.

The four films will star Harris Dickinson (Babygirl) as John Lennon, Barry Keoghan (Saltburn) as Ringo Starr, Paul Mescal (Gladiator II) as Paul McCartney and Joseph Quinn (The Fantastic Four: First Steps) as George Harrison.

Neal Street Production partner Pippa Harris said, “This project springs from an idea of Sam’s which he had over a year ago, and it’s a testament to his creative brilliance and powers of persuasion that Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Sean Lennon and Olivia Harrison responded with such warmth and enthusiasm as soon as he spoke with them. […] To have The Beatles’ and Apple Corps’ blessing to do this is an immense privilege. From our first meeting with Tom Rothman and Elizabeth Gabler, it was clear that they shared both our passion and ambition for this project, and we can’t think of a more perfect home than Sony Pictures.“

The Beatles — A Four Film Cinematic Event will be released in April 2028.
