<p>Through its enhanced search interface, the <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">new Chronicling America<span> </span></a>offers more options to search the collection than the<span> </span><a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">old Chronicling America</a>. Search faceting is only available in the new interface.</p>
<p>Search faceting allows you to refine your search and narrow or expand your search results without starting a new search. It works well when you're searching a specific topic but don't know where you want to start your search. You can facet by<span> </span><strong>newspaper title, date, state/province, county, city, ethnicity, language, subject, newspaper page<span> </span></strong>(useful if you're interested in front-page coverage), and more.</p>
<p>For example, if you are interested in learning more about Abraham Lincoln, you can start with a full text search of his name, with the words within 5 words of each other.</p>

The proximity search is available in both interfaces.</p>
<p>Proximity searching narrows your search by specifying whether keywords are next to, near to, or within a given distance from one another. Proximity searches are useful when searching historic newspapers because you may want to search an exact phrase, such as a place name or a historic quote, or you may want to use broader search criteria because you're uncertain how a newspaper printed a phrase, such as a person's name.</p>
<p>To do a proximity search on the old interface, click on the "Advanced Search" tab and enter your keywords into one of the four boxes: "with any of the words," "with all of the words," "with the phrase," and "with the words... within # of words of each other."</p>

Orville Wright piloted a homemade airplane powered by a homemade engine for a few wobbly seconds while his brother and co-creator Wilbur ran alongside the right wingtip. “<a href="http://www.loc.gov/resource/mss46706.02039?sp=34&r=-0.035,0,1.07,0.661,0?loclr=blogloc" style="color: #1D5782;">Success four flights thursday morning</a>” Orville telegraphed their father back home in Dayton, Ohio. The world would never be the same. Humans flew to the moon 65 years later.</p>

<p>After the Advanced Search is expanded, you can search by title, issue, or page. Select "Pages" to search within the full text of the collection's newspapers and to filter by language. You can still do multiple types of keyword searches and narrow your search by State/Province, County, City, and Title. For example, if you want to search only Arkansas titles, select "Arkansas" from the "State/Province" drop-down menu and only Arkansas titles will appear in the "Title" field. You can also narrow the new advanced search by ethnicity, such as African American, German, or Polish, and narrow your search by date.</p>

<p>In Spring 2024, visitors going to <a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">chroniclingamerica.loc.gov</a> will be re-directed to the <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america/about-this-collection/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">new Chronicling America website</a>, which will continue to provide free access to historic digitized newspapers. The exact date will be announced in the coming months on the new<span> </span><a href="https://loc.gov/ndnp/migration/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">Chronicling America Website Migration</a><span> </span>page, on the<span> </span><a href="https://loc.gov/subscribe/#newspapers" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">Chronicling America Historical Newspapers email list</a>, and also added to the home pages on both versions of the Chronicling America website. The current version of the website will be officially sunset later in 2024.</p>
<p>Users are encouraged to begin using the<span> </span><a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america/about-this-collection/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">new Chronicling America website</a><span> </span>for research. A<span> </span><a href="https://guides.loc.gov/chronicling-america/introduction?preview=e6a98c2768ba3f2128afc8b13c2f0374?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">Research Guide on using Chronicling America</a><span> </span>in the new environment is available. </p>
<p>In the new system, the digitized newspapers will become part of a larger Library of Congress digital collections framework that recently received major upgrades to accommodate future growth and expansion of the collection. New website features include faceted browse options (refine searches by ethnicity, location, subject, language, etc.), improved image viewing, improved Advanced Search options, and more. The new interface also allows users to browse<span> </span><span class="inline-comment-marker" data-ref="355da33b-26dd-4022-a440-bd2d68ec4a7b">digitized titles</span><span> </span>in a<span> </span><a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/chronicling-america/?dl=title&st=map?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">map</a>. Uploads to the new interface are now automated so you may notice that there are more pages available in the new interface than the<span> </span><span class="inline-comment-marker" data-ref="50ca333b-8a7d-44a2-8588-09eaacdbb68c">longstanding version of</span><span> </span>Chronicling America. </p>
<p>As part of the updates, the <a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/search/titles/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">United States Newspaper Directory 1690-Present</a> has also been migrated into a separate searchable collection. Users can access the new <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/directory-of-us-newspapers-in-american-libraries/about-this-collection/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">Directory of U.S. Newspapers in American Libraries</a>, which is a searchable index of newspapers published in the United States since 1690. This directory can help identify what titles exist for a specific place and time, and how to access them. For a detailed overview of the Directory, search tips, and FAQs, please consult the<span> </span><a href="https://guides.loc.gov/directory-of-us-newspapers/introduction?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">Directory of U.S. Newspapers in American Libraries: A Guide for Researchers</a>.  </p>
<p>Digital Humanities scholars and researchers who access the collection via computational methods will continue to have access to bulk OCR but should transition to using the Loc.Gov API at <a href="http://loc.gov/apis?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">loc.gov/apis</a>. Bulk OCR downloads can be accessed from the longstanding <a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/ocr/?loclr=eacam" target="_blank" class="external-link" rel="noopener">OCR Data page</a> until further notice when a new "Datasets" page will be made available on the new site.</p>
<p>Chronicling America was originally launched in 2007 and later updated to the current version of the website in 2011. Since that time, the site saw the growth of the collection to include over 21 million newspaper pages from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands as part of the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). Co-sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), NDNP continues to award funds to cultural heritage institutions around the United States to participate in the program.</p>

<p style="margin-left: .5in;"><span style="font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;"><strong>Project Description:</strong><span> </span>In this project, the Junior Fellow will learn how to research the Black Press in America in the 19th and early 20th centuries using primary and secondary sources and write newspaper history essays to provide context to users of Chronicling America under the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP). This project seeks to expand collection access and context for many of the individual newspaper titles digitized in a 2021-2023 project. The incumbent will create up to ten well-researched newspaper history essays up to 500 words long, representing significant titles or groups of titles from this collection, providing additional context to the content in the newspapers, the community they served, and the publishers and editors who created the newspapers. Americans will benefit from this project by gaining a deeper of the Black Press and its impact.</span></p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Many of us have a distinctive doodle. We can recognize our former school notebooks from the familiar designs that repeat in various combinations on the corners of pages. Some of these drawn figures may still inadvertently appear on a memo pad when we find ourselves on a lengthy telephone call. The connotation of the word “doodle” implies that the penwork lacks intentionality, and therefore fifteenth-century scribes in the Northern Netherlands cannot be said to have “doodled” in the borders of their manuscripts. Nevertheless, the effect of their labors on paper and parchment is remarkably similar to some of our finer memo pad masterpieces.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Library of Congress has completed a yearslong effort to digitize the <a href="https://www.loc.gov/collections/yongle-da-dian/about-this-collection/" style="color: #1D5782;">Yongle Encyclopedia (Yongle dadian 永樂大典)</a>, the largest reference work created in pre-modern China, and possibly the world. Digital publication of the 41 volumes held in the Library’s collections provides open access to one of the most extensive attempts in world history to capture the entirety of human knowledge in book form.</p>

<![CDATA[<p>Join the Library of Congress for our final online research sprint with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) for their <a href="https://newspapers.ushmm.org/">History Unfolded</a> project on <strong>May 24, 2023, 6:00-8:00 PM EDT (US and Canada)</strong>. Search the Library’s historic American newspaper collection, <a href="https://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/?loclr=evtser" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chronicling America</a>, to find out what people knew and how they reacted to the events leading up to and during the Holocaust.</p>
<p>Staff from the Library of Congress will present the Library’s historic newspaper archive, Chronicling America, and demonstrate how to use the advanced search functions. Staff from USHMM will introduce the History Unfolded project, which investigates U.S. press coverage of several Holocaust-related events. They will instruct participants on how to submit relevant newspaper articles to the History Unfolded database. Following the presentations there will be time to conduct your own research and upload findings to History Unfolded.</p>

<p>Learn how to use our digitized newspaper collection to conduct historical research, with a special focus on the American Civil War. Join Henry Carter (Library of Congress) and Donald Summerlin (University of Georgia Libraries) to learn how to research military history in Chronicling America, a free digital collection of over 20 million pages from American newspapers published between 1770 and 1963. The presenters will discuss the collection, the search interface, and how to navigate the challenges of working with historic newspapers. The presentation will specifically focus on researching the Atlanta Campaign of the American Civil War, but the search techniques can be applied to broader military history research. Chronicling America is jointly sponsored by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Library of Congress.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The act of Congress establishing the poet laureate position states that the Librarian may appoint a laureate “for one- or two-year terms.” This is the first time a laureate will serve the longer option. Limón’s second term will begin in September 2023 and conclude in April 2025.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Musical artists will join the national library and American leaders to honor music legend Joni Mitchell in the nation’s capital on Wednesday, March 1<strong>,</strong> as she is awarded the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song during an all-star tribute concert.</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The lineup will include performances by James Taylor, Brandi Carlile, Annie Lennox, Herbie Hancock, Cyndi Lauper, Marcus Mumford, Graham Nash, Diana Krall, Angelique Kidjo and Ledisi. The concert is by invitation only, but PBS will broadcast the concert later this month.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Library has announced the initial release of over 1,300 newly digitized postcards from the Africana Historic Postcard Collection, which depicts life under French, Italian, German, Belgian and British colonial rule in sub-Saharan Africa from the 1890s until the end of the 1930s.</p>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Library has acquired the papers of choreographer Garth Fagan and Garth Fagan Dance, the company founded by Fagan in 1970. Garth Fagan Dance is distinguished by the artistic imagination and polyrhythmic movement of Jamaican-born Fagan, layered with the discipline and strength of ballet training. The company has performed in more than 660 cities in 24 countries on six continents.</p>

<title>Chronicling America: Historic American Newspapers: Announcing Two Interactive Dataset Tools</title>

<![CDATA[<p>The Library of Congress and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) <a href="https://www.neh.gov/blog/chronicling-americas-newspaper-biographies-data">announce the addition of two new interactive tools</a> for creating and analyzing Chronicling America datasets. In addition to the over 20 million pages of digitized news available, for every newspaper added to Chronicling America, National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP) state partners provide 500-word newspaper biographies or title essays. These essays contain information about the editor or publisher, the history of the publication, information about the community the newspaper served, and important events the newspaper covered.</p>
<p>In a recent National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) <a href="https://www.neh.gov/blog/chronicling-americas-newspaper-biographies-data">blog post</a>, Daniel Evans, a PhD student at the University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign and Pathways Intern with the NEH, describes his project to re-envision these newspaper essays as data. He created two web-based Jupyter notebooks that guide researchers through the process of using these essays as data. Using both notebooks requires little-to-no programming experience. They are included with other tutorials and resources on the <a href="https://github.com/LibraryOfCongress/data-exploration/tree/master/loc.gov%20JSON%20API/Chronicling_America_Title_Essay_Datasets">Library of Congress’s GitHub repository</a>. Their goal is to provide researchers with a downloadable dataset of all the title essays and tips on how one can create specific queries related to a variety of research needs and interests.</p>]]>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden announced today that Margaret Williams will become General Counsel of the Library of Congress effective New Year’s Day. Williams has been at the Library for 35 years, serving most recently as Deputy General Counsel. She succeeds Elizabeth Pugh who will retire on December 31, after a distinguished 44-year career with the federal government including 22 years at the Library.</p>

This blog post features interviews with state partners from Arizona and Minnesota who have digitized several titles by and about Native Americans featured in Chronicling America. It also provides search tips for finding the titles and searching within the newspapers.</p>
