41.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem refused to say whether she actually met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un during a tense interview with Fox News host Jesse Watters on Monday.

 42.
After Watters grilled Noem about the backlash she received for dragging her 14-month-old dog to a gravel pit and shooting it in the head, he added, “They’re also attacking you– I guess you said you met Kim Jong-un? Did you meet him?”

 43.
“I’ve been to the [demilitarized zone]. I’ve been to North Korea,” replied Noem. “I don’t talk about my conversations with world leaders and so when I looked at the book and I saw that excerpt, I decided to make the change to the content of the book and that’s been done.”

 44.
Watters questioned, “So, you didn’t have a conversation with Kim when you were at the DMZ?”

 45.
“I don’t have conversations about my conversations with world leaders,” Noem responded. “I’ve been working on policy for thirty years, Jesse, and that’s what most people don’t remember about me is I’m old.”

 46.
Watters shot back, “You’re not that old. So maybe you did have a conversation with Kim but you don’t wanna talk about it?”

 47.
“I will not talk about my personal conversations with any world leaders,” concluded Noem. “I just won’t and I’m not gonna do it.”

 48.
Noem received backlash last month over an anecdote in her new book about her decision to shoot and kill her 14-month-old dog Cricket after it proved “less than worthless” as a hunting animal.

 49.
Noem’s book sparked additional controversy this week after she was accused of lying about a supposed meeting with Kim Jong-un during a trip to North Korea.

 50.
“I remember when I met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un, I’m sure he underestimated me having no clue about my experience staring down little tyrants,” wrote Noem in an extract of the book, which has since been removed. “I’ve been a children’s pastor after all.”

 51.
While Noem has insinuated that the passage in her book was added without her knowledge, she also narrated the claim in her audiobook.

 74.
 75.
CNN’s Kaitlan Collins disputed the claim that Donald Trump wants to be sent to jail for violating the gag order in his New York criminal trial.

 76.
Judge Juan Merchan found the former president in contempt on Monday after ruling Trump violated the order for the tenth time. Merchan told the defendant that though he does not want to, he may send Trump to jail for future verbal attacks on witnesses, jurors, or court staff.

 77.
An angry Trump emerged from court to rail against Merchan and the gag order, just as he has done virtually every day of his trial. He suggested he may risk jail by running afoul of Merchan again.

 78.
“And frankly, you know what? Our Constitution is much more important than jail,” Trump said. “It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day.”

 79.
Collins scoffed at the notion hours later on CNN where Anderson Cooper read part of the judge’s admonition to Trump.

 80.
“He said, ‘Mr. Trump, it’s important to understand that the last thing I want to do is put you in jail. You are the former president United States and possibly the next president, as well. There are many reasons why incarceration is truly a last resort for me. To take that step would be disruptive to these proceedings, which I imagine you want to end as quickly as possible.’ Just politically, Kaitlan, what would what would this mean?”

 81.
Collins replied:

 82.

The idea that Donald Trump would actually want to go to jail is ridiculous. Anyone who knows him knows that he doesn’t even like to stay in a hotel when he goes on foreign trips, when he wouldn’t as president. It was a whole thing to actually get him to stay overnight in places.

 83.
So this idea that he actually does want to do this for the optics perspective, I mean, when you speak to his closest advisers and allies, they’ll say that’s completely far-fetched. Do they think it would work to their advantage? Maybe politically, but I do think Donald Trump heeding this is something that you never see Donald Trump do, which is actually which is actually words. And he keeps acknowledging that every time he goes into that courtroom, even if he is lying about what the gag order actually says, he can and cannot do, he is being careful.

 84.
Trump has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records.

 107.
 108.
Fox News host Jesse Watters pressed South Dakota Kristi Noem (R) about shooting her dog because it repeatedly misbehaved.

 109.
In her new book, Noem tells the story of Cricket, who the governor says was a very bad dog that liked to bite people and animals. After Cricket escaped and killed several chickens, Noem took the dog to a gravel pit, where she shot it to death.

 110.
Noem called Cricket, “less than worthless.”

 111.
The inclusion of the story has gained Noem gobs of negative press across the political spectrum. Some have even speculated that it will hurt her political prospects, as she has been rumored to be on the shortlist to be Donald Trump’s running mate. Meanwhile, the former president was reportedly “disgusted” by the story.

 112.
Noem has been doing the usual media blitz that accompanies new memoirs written by politicians, but she has been on the defensive more than other such authors.

 113.
Appearing on Jesse Watters Primetime, Noem defended her actions.

 114.
“What happens if you are debating Kamala Harris and she says, ‘Well, wait a second, you shot your dog and you wrote a book about it, bragging about it. How can you be vice president?'” Watters asked.

 115.
“That story was a choice as a mom,” she replied. “The safety of my children versus a dangerous dog that was killing livestock and attacking people. So, this book that I’ve written is full of stories of my past, hard decisions. And I told the truth.”

 116.
“Do you regret telling that story?” he pressed. “Do you understand why people don’t like that story?”

 117.
The governor curiously replied by saying “everybody” knew about her executing a dog, a statement that appears to be undercut by the shock and horror her story has garnered.

 118.
“Everybody’s known that story for years,” she insisted. “Most people don’t realize that in South Dakota they’ve used that story to attack me and my political campaigns for years. I wanted people to know the truth. This dog was vicious, it was dangerous, it was killing livestock for the joy of it and attacking people. And I had a choice between keeping my family safe, I had little kids at the time, a very public business of inviting people to come out and enjoy our hunting lodge and our business, and I don’t pass my responsibilities off to anybody else.”

 119.
“So, you’re standing by the dog story?” the host asked.

 120.
“I’ll tell you what, it’s the facts,” Noem answered.

 153.
Twelve Republican senators signed a letter threatening members of the International Criminal Court with “severe sanctions” and a ban from the United States after it was reported that the ICC was preparing an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

 154.
The letter – which was signed by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC), among others – warned ICC prosecutor Karim Ahmad Khan that any attempts to issue an arrest warrant for Netanyahu or other Israeli officials would “result in severe sanctions” against both Khan and the ICC as a whole.

 155.
“By issuing warrants, you would be calling into question the legitimacy of Israel’s laws, legal system, and democratic form of government,” the letter claimed, before protesting that the ICC had not issued similar arrest warrants for Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, or Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

 156.
The senators continued:

 157.

Neither Israel nor the United States are members of the ICC and are therefore outside of your organization’s supposed jurisdiction. If you issue a warrant for the arrest of the Israeli leadership, we will interpret this not only as a threat to Israel’s sovereignty but to the sovereignty of the United States. Our country demonstrated in the American Service-Members’ Protection Act the lengths to which we will go to protect that sovereignty.

 158.
The United States will not tolerate politicized attacks by the ICC on our allies. Target Israel and we will target you. If you move forward with the measures indicated in the report, we will move to end all American support for the ICC, sanction your employees and associates, and bar you and your families from the United States. 159.
As noted by Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan, who published the letter in full on Monday, the American Service-Members’ Protection Act threateningly cited by the senators was signed into law by former President George W. Bush in 2002 and “has since become widely known as ‘The Hague Invasion Act’ because it authorizes the U.S. president ‘to use all means necessary and appropriate’ to bring about the release not just of U.S. persons but also allies who are imprisoned or detained by the ICC.”

 160.
The letter was signed by McConnell, Rubio, and Scott, along with Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR), Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC), Sen. Pete Ricketts (R-NE), Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), and Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN).

 161.
On Friday, the ICC demanded an end to “intimidation” against the court, seemingly in response to the senators’ letter, which was dated April 24.

 185.
Fox News host Greg Gutfeld said he hopes Donald Trump is sent to jail because it will “guarantee” the former president wins November’s election.

 186.
Trump is on trial in Manhattan where he has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to conceal hush money payments to cover up extramarital affairs before the 2016 election. He is also under criminal indictment in three other jurisdictions.

 187.
On Monday, Judge Juan Merchan held Trump in contempt after ruling that the former president violated a gag order for the tenth time. That order is meant to prevent Trump from attacking jurors and witnesses in the case. Merchan warned Trump he could face jail time if he runs afoul of the order again.

 188.
Trump and Republicans have claimed the cases against Trump are politically motivated and are being prosecuted to help President Joe Biden win reelection.

 189.
During Monday’s edition of The Five on Fox News, Gutfeld insisted being incarcerated would ensure a Trump electoral victory.

 190.
“I hope they do arrest Trump,” he said. “I hope they put him in jail because that does guarantee that he wins. Please, please, please. This is becoming the greatest third act of any political story.”

 191.
Gutfeld argued that the trial is “focusing and sharpening Trump.”

 192.
“He comes out of the gate like a bronco ready to just roar,” he went on. “And it’s working. I mean, man, it’s like he’s up. Keep it going.”

 193.
While there is no polling into how Americans would react if Trump is jailed for violating the gag order, there are no surveys showing Trump would benefit from a conviction. In fact, he would likely lose votes.

 219.
Donny Deutsch said on Monday’s Deadline: White House that former President Donald Trump is “terrified” of jail “just by his issues with odor and smells” and “fear of disease.”

 220.
The ad man and MSNBC contributor told Nicolle Wallace that, “despite his references to Nelson Mandela,” a jail sentence would be Trump’s worst nightmare.

 221.
“I remember interviewing ‘The Wolf of Wall Street,’ and he told me what it’s literally going through the process, what it’s like, and what they examine, and how they do things,” Deutsch said, continuing:

 222.

Donald Trump — and we were talking off camera, and you brought up the point in the last segment that he won’t eat food when he goes on foreign territory. You have to use the bathroom. His hair. His makeup. His skin. Like, he will be pulled apart. He doesn’t have the mettle to do it.

 223.
So, anybody that’s out there saying, “Oh, it’s a great moment for him” — this is not a mug shot. This is jail. And Donald Trump is terrified. You’ve got to believe, just by his issues with odors and smells and, you know, fear of disease. This guy does not want to spend 30 — nobody does, but particularly this guy.

 224.
Earlier Monday, Trump spoke to the media as he left court, where he complained that he can’t answer questions “because this judge is giving me a gag order and says you’ll go to jail if you violate it. And frankly, you know what? Our Constitution is much more important than jail. It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day.”

 225.
Trump is on trial, charged with 34 counts of business fraud connected to a hush money payment meant to silence an adult film actress so news of his alleged affair wouldn’t ruin his chances of the presidency. Judge Juan Merchan imposed a gag order to prevent Trump from railing against court participants.

 226.
On Monday, Judge Merchan declared that Trump violated that order 10 times and could go to jail if he does so again.

 248.
In her first cable interview since coming back home, Brittney Griner shared details about her experience in a Russian labor camp.

 249.
When she arrived in Russia to play basketball during the WNBA off-season in 2022, Griner was arrested when cannabis cartridges were found in her luggage. She maintains that she mistakenly packed them with her clothing and is aware of Russian law.

 250.
While the mistake seemed harmless, Griner found herself detained for several months while she awaited a final sentencing. Complicating matters was the ongoing war in Ukraine, likely leading Russia’s government to be more strict toward the American athlete.

 251.
Though she was eventually sentenced to nine years in a labor camp, she was eventually freed when the U.S. government agreed to swap Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout for her. In total, she spent 10 months in detainment.

 252.
On MSNBC’s The ReidOut, Griner said she knew the war would complicate her situation and prepared for the worst.

 253.
“That changed everything,” Griner said. “Any sliver of hope that I had that we could come to some kind of agreement or a trade or something quietly, that all went out the window. When they invaded, I knew that — that was another moment of that ‘whoosh’ feeling, that sunken, just, it’s all over. I was like, ‘This is it.’ Like, there’s no way now… I was like, ‘Well, I need to get prepared for the long haul.'”

 254.
Being a Black queer woman also heightened her anxiety. Griner added that at one point, guards tried to place in a cell designated for men.

 255.
“I was terrified when I was thinking about going to that jail,” she said, “because I was like, ‘What game are they going to play?’ And I soon found out one of the games, trying to tell me to go into one of the men’s cells. And I’m like, ‘I’m not going in that cell.’ And then the other guard said something in Russian and shook his hand, and then they take me to the women’s side. And I was just like, ‘See, it’s a game, you know?’ And I knew all that was stacked against me.”

 256.
Even when placed in the proper cell, Griner still felt uncomfortable with how she was viewed in the prison.

 257.
“They definitely knew who I was, because I would hear little things like ‘the American,’ ‘the basketball American,'” she said. “And it was just, I would see the little hole where they could see you. They would lift that up all the time, all hours of the night. I would hear it go up and down and snickering and the laughing. And I’m like, ‘Ok, I’m the zoo animal today.'”
The post Brittney Griner Shares Experience in Russian Prison in First Cable Interview Since Coming Back to U.S.: ‘I’m the Zoo Animal Today’ first appeared on Mediaite.

 279.
Former President Donald Trump made his usual post-trial statement in Manhattan Monday, but this time, he risked being thrown in jail if he breaks Judge Juan Merchan’s gag order for an eleventh time.

 280.
Trump began by denouncing the prosecution’s contention that they would need “two to three more weeks” to present their case, before he railed about the gag order.

 281.
“The judge is so happy about two to three more weeks because all they want is to keep me off the campaign trail. That’s all this is about.” Trump continued:

 282.

And have the other thing that maybe is even more disgraceful is the gag order, where I can’t, basically, I have to watch every word I tell you people. You ask me a question, a simple question, I’d like to give it but I can’t talk about it because this judge is giving me a gag order and says you’ll go to jail if you violate it. And frankly, you know what? Our Constitution is much more important than jail. It’s not even close. I’ll do that sacrifice any day.

 283.
Judge Merchan found Trump in contempt for a tenth time Monday, and added a pointed warning about the possibly he could order the former president to be incarcerated, saying the $1,000 fines he has imposed were not effective.

 284.
Merchan’s order read in part:

 285.

THEREFORE, Defendant is hereby put on notice that if appropriate and warranted, future violations of its lawful orders will be punishable by incarceration;

 286.
and it is hereby ORDERED, that Defendant pay a $1,000 fine for his violation of this Court’s lawful otdet by the close of business on Friday, May 10, 2024;

 311.
Karine Jean-Pierre condemned South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s suggestion that President Joe Biden’s dog be killed.

 312.
Noem ignited a firestorm last month by recalling in her new book how she shot and killed her 14-month-old dog Cricket because it kept misbehaving. The last straw came when the dog escaped and killed several chickens.

 313.
“At that moment,” Noem says, “I realized I had to put her down.” The governor subsequently brought Cricket to a gravel pit where she shot it. To no one’s surprise – except Noem’s – the story garnered backlash across the political spectrum.

 314.
On Sunday, Noem made headlines again for all the wrong reasons when she suggested Biden’s dog Commander be put down during an interview with Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation:

 315.

BRENNAN: You talk multiple times about it. In fact, at the end of the book, you say the very first thing you would do if you got to the White House that was different from Joe Biden is, you’d make sure Joe Biden’s dog was nowhere on the grounds. “Commander, say hello to Cricket.” Are you doing this to try to look tough? Do you still think you have a shot at being V.P?

 316.
NOEM: Well, number one, Joe Biden’s dog has attacked 24 Secret Service people. So, how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog and what to do about it?

 317.
BRENNAN: But he’s not living at the White House.

 318.
NOEM: That’s a question that the president should be held accountable to.

 319.
BRENNAN: You’re saying he should be shot?

 320.
NOEM: That’s what the president should be held accountable to.

 321.
During Monday’s press briefing, Jean-Pierre was asked about Noem’s comments. The White House press secretary called them “disturbing” and “absurd.”

 322.
“We find her comments from yesterday disturbing,” she said. “We find them absurd. And this is a country that loves dogs. And you have a leader talking about putting dogs down, killing them. And that’s a disturbing statement to say. I would say to her, she should probably stop digging herself in a hole.”

 323.
Noem has been floated as a potential running mate for former President Donald Trump, who was reportedly “disgusted” by the governor’s story.

 344.
Miami Heat president Pat Riley wasn’t amused by Jimmy Butler boldly claiming which teams they would beat in the playoffs if he were healthy.

 345.
During the Heat’s play-in tournament game against the Philadelphia 76ers, Butler sustained a knee injury that would have sidelined him for several weeks. Because it occurred just before the playoffs, it meant the team would have had to make a deep playoff run for him to have any hopes of returning.

 346.
Unfortunately for Butler, the team was eliminated in five games by the Boston Celtics in the first round.

 347.
This past weekend, a video surfaced online showing Butler talking to a friend. During this conversation Butler claimed that if he hadn’t been injured, the Heat would have upset in the first round. He said the same for the New York Knicks — whom the Heat would have faced in the first round if the team beat the Sixers in the play-in game.

 381.
White House spokesperson John Kirby said the Biden administration does not support Israel’s decision to ban Al Jazeera from the country.

 382.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced the ban on the Qatari news network.

 383.
“The government headed by me unanimously decided: the incitement channel Al Jazeera will be closed in Israel,” he posted on social media.

 384.
Netanyahu called Al Jazeera a threat to national security amid Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza in response to the Oct. 7 terrorist attacks.

 385.
“Al Jazeera Media Network strongly condemns and denounces this criminal act that violates human rights and the basic rights of access of information,” the network responded in a statement. “Al Jazeera affirms its right to continue to provide news and information to its global audiences.”

 386.
Kirby was asked about the ban during Monday’s White House press briefing.

 387.
“The Israelis stopped broadcast of Al Jazeera over the weekend,” a reporter noted. “Can you comment on whether that’s an appropriate action for a United States ally?”

 388.
“We don’t support that action,” he replied. “As we said very clearly on World Press Freedom Day on Friday… the work of independent journalism around the world is absolutely vital. It’s important to an informed citizenry and the public, but it’s also important to help inform the policymaking process. So, we don’t support that at all.”

 389.
The reporter inquired as to whether President Joe Biden brought the matter up with Netanyahu during a recent phone call.

 390.
“The focus of the call was on a hostage deal and Rafah,” Kirby answered.

 415.
South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem apparently really, really wanted to tell her dog shooting story — so much so that she floated it a second time around after aides kept it out of her first book, according to new reporting from Politico.

 416.
In an article titled, “Kristi Noem’s Team Told Her to Nix the Dog Story Two Years Ago,” columnist Michael Schaffer wrote that Noem wanted the story out there “because it showed a decisive person who was unwilling to be bound by namby-pamby niceties,” but “agents, editors and publicists at Hachette Book Group’s prestige Twelve imprint, and a ghostwriter — saw it as a bad-taste anecdote.”

 417.
Noem’s 2022 book, Not My First Rodeo: Lessons from the Heartland, sold 100,000 copies and earned her a spot on The New York Times’ bestseller list, all without a shred of controversy.

 418.
Schaffer wrote:

 419.

This time around, Noem has a different team in place, as well as a different imprint, Hachette’s conservative-leaning Center Street. And the folks behind her new book, No Going Back, didn’t get in the way of sharing memories about gunning down an ill-trained puppy.

 420.
Uproar ensued when news broke of Noem writing about shooting and killing Cricket, her “less than worthless” puppy for being “aggressive” on a pheasant hunt and killing chickens. The anecdote was meant to show that Noem could do “difficult, messy and ugly” things when necessary, but was widely denounced and mocked, including by Saturday Night Live.

 421.
In a CBS News Face The Nation interview with Margaret Brennan over the weekend, Noem doubled down on her conviction that she did the right thing by suggesting that Joe Biden follow in her footsteps with his dog, Commander.

 422.
“Joe Biden’s dog has attacked 24 Secret Service people. So, how many people is enough people to be attacked and dangerously hurt before you make a decision on a dog and what to do about it?” she said.

 423.
Noem had been touted as a possible vice presidential pick for Donald Trump, but Cricketgate may have squashed those hopes. Trump himself was said to be “disgusted” by the story.

 424.
Politico also reported on several factual errors in the book, including Noem’s claim that she met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. Noem has said certain inaccuracies were being corrected before the book is released this week.

 445.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s third party bid for the White House landed an unusual endorsement on Monday: Kevin Spacey.

 446.
The Academy Award-winning actor announced his support on X, formerly Twitter in response to a new video from Kennedy Jr.’s campaign that was narrated by Woody Harrelson, another celebrity supporter.

 447.
Spacey described Kennedy Jr. as a “loyal friend.”

 448.
“There’s a lot I can learn from this man. When the world turned its back on me, Bobby leaned in,” he wrote. “He’s a formidable fighter for justice and a loyal friend that’s not afraid to stand up for what he believes.”

 449.
The video from Kennedy Jr.’s campaign begins with him reading various words from critics, saying he’s “divorced from reality” and a conspiracy theorist, printed in the media about his presidential run.

 455.

 456.
Spacey’s endorsement of Kennedy Jr. comes as the actor is facing a new wave of misconduct allegations. Spacey Unmasked, a Channel 4 documentary, is set to air on May 6 and 7 in the U.K., and it will stream on the Max streaming app in the U.S. The documentary contains multiple new accusers with allegations that cover decades.

 457.
The actor denied the allegations of sexual harassment in an interview with UK presenter Dan Wootton. In the lengthy chat, Spacey responded to each allegation as they were described in an email to Channel 4. Spacey claimed the network did not give him adequate time to respond, and he questioned the timing of the documentary’s release as it comes after multiple wins in court and the actor starting to appear in movies for the first time in years.

 458.
In 2017, Spacey was accused of sexual misconduct amid a flurry of other allegations against famous famous as part of the #MeToo movement. Among the accusations was actor Anthony Rapp, who accused Spacey of sexual assault when he was a minor. Rapp ultimately lost a sexual battery lawsuit in New York in 2022. Spacey was also found not guilty on multiple sexual assault charges in the U.K. in 2023.

 459.
The allegations of misconduct led to Spacey being booted from Netflix’s House of Cards, edited out of Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, and his Gore Vidal biopic for Netflix was indefinitely shelved. Spacey’s career has seen a slight upturn as he’s appeared in films again, albeit low budget efforts like 2023’s Control and this year’s Peter Five Eight. Among his other efforts was a recent sit-down with Tucker Carlson where the actor unofficially reprised his House of Cards character for the bizarre interview.

 460.
In the Wootton interview, Spacey described himself as “promiscuous” and said he’d privately apologized for some of his past behavior, but denied allegations of sexual harassment and assault.

 461.
“I take full responsibility for my past behavior and my actions,” the actor said. “But I cannot and will not take responsibility or apologize to anyone who’s made up stuff about me or exaggerated stories about me,” he said.

 462.
Spacey called it a mistake to come out as homosexual in his response to Rapp’s original accusation. The new allegations include men claiming Spacey used his celebrity status and to pressure them, but Spacey denied this and said he’s never promised career favors to anyone in exchange for physical favors.

 463.
“I’ve clearly hooked up with some men, who thought they might get ahead in their careers by having a relationship with me,” he said. “But there was no conversation with me, it was all part of their plan, a plan that was always destined to fail, because I wasn’t in on the deal.”
The post Kevin Spacey Backs ‘Loyal Friend’ RFK Jr. For President Amid New Misconduct Allegations first appeared on Mediaite.

 485.
Newly elected Green Party councillor Mothin Ali is under investigation by the party after a viral video of him describing his electoral victory as a “win for the people of Gaza” declaring “Allahu Akbar.”

 486.
Ali, who unseated a Labour candidate in the Gipton and Harehills ward in Leeds with a substantial vote lead, has not been suspended by his party but will continue his role while being investigated.

 487.
During his victory speech, the councillor said: “We will not be silenced. We will raise the voice of Gaza. We will raise the voice of Palestine. Allahu Akbar!”

 488.
A Green Party spokesman said Monday: “The Green Party is investigating issues drawn to our attention in relation to Councillor Mothin Ali, so cannot comment further. However, we are clear that we never support anything that extols violence.”

 489.
In response to the October 7 terror attacks, Ali made several posts on his social media platforms and accused Israel of using the “pretext of the fightback by Hamas fighters or supposedly Hamas fighters this morning” to carry out attacks on civilians.

 490.
Ali described Gaza as “the biggest concentration camp the world has ever seen,” and called on his viewers to “support the right of indigenous people to fight back.” He characterised Israel as “a settler, colonial, occupier” attempting to “erase the legitimacy of a native population.”

 491.
He added: “They are not victims, they are occupiers, they are colonialists, they are European colonialists. It’s one of the last European colonies in the world, and that’s why the European people don’t want to let it go. They use the weapon of anti-Semitism so effectively that anyone who criticises Israel is labelled as anti-Semitic.”

 492.
The Green Party announced the investigation ahead of a meeting with Lord John Mann, the government’s adviser on antisemitism, during which he said he will discuss with Green Party leaders the rhetoric of certain candidates and councillors.

 493.
During the meeting, he intends to examine whether the Green Party should suspend or expel these individuals and enhance its process for selecting and vetting candidates. He pointed out the necessity of potentially removing Ali from the party, similar to Labour’s dismissal of Azhar Ali in February – who insinuated that Israel orchestrated the October 7 attack as a pretext for an invasion of Gaza, a statement he later retracted.

 494.
This controversy unfolds as the Labour Party sees a dip in Muslim voter support, with some seats lost to candidates with a clear pro-Palestinian agenda as political and communal rifts continue to be influenced by the conflict.
The post ‘We Will Raise The Voice Of Gaza’: Green Party Launch Investigation Into Councillor Over Viral Victory Speech first appeared on Mediaite.

 516.
CNN commentator and New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman made a grim assessment of former President Donald Trump’s defense against “pretty clear evidence” of a payoff to Stormy Daniels., calling it “hard to follow.”

 517.
Haberman and her Times colleagues reported from inside the courtroom with live updates, as they have since the trial began in earnest, in the Stormy Daniels hush money-election interference trial on Monday.

 518.
The day began with fireworks, as Judge Juan Merchan issued a contempt ruling that included a strong threat of jail time.

 519.
After that, the trial resumed with comparatively dry testimony from witnesses like former Trump Organization comptroller Jeffrey McConney, who offered several key points of testimony for the prosecution’s case.

 520.
Nevertheless, Trump seemed happy with the testimony, reportedly giving him “two fist pump gestures as he left the stand.”

 521.
But Haberman and her colleagues weighed in on the weaknesses in Trump attorney Emil Bove’s cross-examination of McConney, finding it far from alright, alright, alright.

 522.
In the Times‘ live trial blog, Haberman called the cross a “jumble” caused by Trump’s influence, while Jonah Bromwich pointed out the defense has failed to “offer a cohesive alternative theory of the case”:

 523.

Maggie Haberman
524. May 6, 2024, 12:54 p.m. ET

 525.
Watching Emil Bove’s largely hard-to-follow cross examination of Jeffrey McConney, the challenge facing Trump’s lawyers again becomes clear. They’re basically doing a version of: “He didn’t do it, and even if he did it’s not a crime.”

 526.
That worked effectively during, say, Trump’s first impeachment trial, which was a political trial. But this is a criminal case involving a lot of pretty clear evidence that Michael Cohen made a payoff to Stormy Daniels that he was reimbursed for after discussions involving top Trump financial officials.

 527.
Since the client here — Trump — never wants his lawyers to cede any ground as to whether he did anything questionable, the defense lawyers are left with this jumble.

 528.
Jonah Bromwich
529. May 6, 2024, 12:44 p.m. ET

 530.
As we listen to Emil Bove seek to emphasize that Jeffrey McConney was not personally sure what the repayments to Michael Cohen were for, I’m reminded that the defense lawyers, in their opening statement, did not offer a cohesive alternative theory of the case, but rather attacked various parts of the prosecution’s case. That can make it difficult to follow what Bove is trying to achieve with an individual witness, especially one like McConney who mostly testified about documentary evidence. Bove is implying that McConney doesn’t truly understand the documents he was asked to testify about — but even accepting McConney’s relative ignorance, it’s hard to know what the defense wants the jury to make of these damning documents.

 531.
Jonathan Swan
532. May 6, 2024, 12:47 p.m. ET

 533.
Bove appears to be trying to make the jury feel like none of this was secretive or nefarious. To that end, he just spent a bunch of time getting McConney to say how he routinely locked cabinets to protect Trump Organization employees’ sensitive financial details. In other words, he implies, the cabinet was not locked to protect the secret agreement with Michael Cohen.

 555.
Georgia’s former Lieutenant Gov. Geoff Duncan (R) wrote in an op-ed in the Atlanta Journal Constitution that he had “no choice but to pull the lever” for Joe Biden in November’s presidential election.

 556.
Duncan took on Donald Trump’s false election claims in 2020, and was described by the AP as “one of the most prominent Republicans to openly contradict” the former president. Trump was indicted in Georgia on racketeering charges for allegedly trying to subvert the 2020 election results in that state.

 557.
Duncan wrote that it was “disappointing to watch an increasing number of Republicans” support Trump’s re-election, including Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), former U.S. Attorney Gen. Bill Barr, and New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu.

 558.
“Yes, elections are a binary choice. Yes, serious questions linger about President Biden’s ability to serve until the age of 86. His progressive policies aren’t to conservatives’ liking,” Duncan wrote, continuing:

 559.

But the GOP will never rebuild until we move on from the Trump era, leaving conservative (but not angry) Republicans like me no choice but to pull the lever for Biden. At the same time, we should work to elect GOP congressional majorities to block his second-term legislative agenda and provide a check and balance.

 560.
The alternative is another term of Trump, a man who has disqualified himself through his conduct and his character. The headlines are ablaze with his hush-money trial over allegations of improper record-keeping for payments to conceal an affair with an adult-film star.

 561.
Most important, Trump fanned the flames of unfounded conspiracy theories that led to the horrific events of Jan. 6, 2021. He refuses to admit he lost the last election and has hinted he might do so again after the next one.

 562.
Duncan added, “Trump has shown us who he is. We should believe him. To think he is going to change at the age of 77 is beyond improbable.”

 563.
Read the AJC op-ed here.
The post Georgia Republican Geoff Duncan Says He’s Voting for Biden: ‘GOP Will Never Rebuild Until We Move On From Trump’ first appeared on Mediaite.

 582.
When the WNBA decided not to stream Angel Reese’s debut, one fan in the arena streamed it from their phone to more than half a million viewers.

 583.
Reese was selected with the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky. On May 3, she made her professional debut when the Sky took on the Minnesota Lynx. Unfortunately for anyone not in the arena for the game, that debut couldn’t be watched as the league did not stream the game on WNBA League Pass.

 584.
Realizing this, a fan in crowd known as Alli decided to start a live stream on Twitter from her seat. During the game, the stream managed to attract as many as 545,000 viewers. As of Monday, the archived stream has more than 600,000 views.

 589.
To many online, the league’s decision to not televise the game was a baffling one. After all, the Sky features both Reese and former South Carolina star Kamilla Cardoso — who just won a national championship a few weeks ago. The game didn’t lack star appeal.

 590.
The WNBA’s coverage of Caitlin Clark and her debut with the Indiana Fever was on the other end of the spectrum. Highlights were posted all over social media and the official account of the NBA even posted about it.

 617.
Media entrepreneur and Mediaite owner Dan Abrams acquired two liquor event companies to complement his Bottle Raiders website, a consolidation of several spirits review sites he launched in recent years.

 618.
The event brands, Whiskey Washback and Arte Agave, currently hold 11 tasting events each year in major cities across the country. Abrams plans to expand the number of events and locations, as well as offer custom virtual and in-person events to organizations.

 619.
“With this acquisition, we are sort of bringing everything together, which is events, video, an app and the web,” Abrams said in an interview with Variety announcing the deal.

 620.
Abrams recently combined his whiskeyraiders.com, tequilaraiders.com, ginraiders.com and rumraiders.com websites into one umbrella site called Bottle Raiders. The consolidated site bills itself as “the world’s largest spirits review website,” that will now include tasting events.

 621.
“Our goal has long been to use powerful content from experts to drive experiences and expand our revenue streams,” Abrams said in a statement. “Being able to connect our audience with top-notch tasting events around the country where they will have exclusive access to brands and industry personalities is a perfect fit.”

 622.
Abrams added that the Whiskey Washback and Arte Agave team will remain in place, with founders Walter and Emily Easterbrook continuing to lead the events portion of the business.

 623.
“This partnership not only represents a significant milestone for the company I have passionately built but also signals a transformative era for the hospitality industry,” Walter Easterbrook said.

 624.
The next event is from Arte Agave and will be held on May 31 in Miami.

 625.
Last fall, Abrams sold his Law&Crime network to Jellysmack in a reported nine-figure deal that marked the tech startup’s largest acquisition to date.
The post Dan Abrams Acquires Fine Liquor Event Brands to Bolster Bottle Raiders Review Site first appeared on Mediaite.

 645.

[jwvidoe id=XRmodkZe]

 646.
Host of The Mary Trump Show podcast and strident Trump critic Mary Trump told MSNBC host Ali Velshi it’s “ridiculous” that prosecutors argue not to jail former President Donald Trump because they think that’s what he wants.

 647.
One much-discussed facet of the Stormy Daniels hush money-election interference trial has been the repeated gag order violations that have now resulted in a tenth contempt finding and a serious threat of jail time. A subplot of this dynamic involves the theory that Trump wants to be sent to jail in order to galvanize his base.

 648.
On Sunday morning’s edition of MSNBC’s Velshi, before the latest contempt ruling, Mary lashed out at that argument, telling Velshi her uncle’s alleged wishes should not enter in to the decision:

 649.

ALI VELSHI: Donald Trump was fined $9,000 for violating a gag order. Not much money to him these days. He faced a second hearing about more apparent violations, and the judge warned him that if he keeps this up, a so-called incarcerated punishment or jail might be necessary.

 650.
Nothing seems to cause him to let up. He continues to attack Judge Merchan. He continues to attack Alvin Bragg. They’re of course not. They’re not protected by these orders. What do you think’s going on here?

 651.
MARY TRUMP: I think Donald is doing exactly what he’s been given permission to do and what he’s always been doing. Nothing stops him because nobody is stopping him.

 652.
It seems absolutely absurd to me that the prosecution is going out of its way to argue that there should not be an incarcerated penalty at this point, because what is that financial fine going to do? Nothing!

 653.
Because as the judge himself pointed out, that is not a deterrent to Donald Trump. He’ll he’ll pay that fine all day long because apparently the judge can’t find him more than $1,000 per offense. So the offenses will keep piling up unless and until something serious is done.

 654.
Because, first of all, it doesn’t matter if Donald Trump is angling for jail time, which is another argument the prosecution has made. That’s ridiculous, first of all.

 655.
But secondly, it doesn’t matter! You don’t fine somebody or punish somebody based on what they want, right? You punish them based on the offenses in front of you.

 656.
So, until somebody is willing to step up– and we’ve seen this even in the, civil trials, it still isn’t enough because he’s getting the money from somewhere else, to, cover the, the fraud trial, New York City or his, payments to E. Jean Carroll. Somebody has to understand that this person will continue to push the envelope for as long as he’s allowed to. We’ve seen it in our politics, and now we’re seeing it in a criminal trial.

 657.
Watch above via MSNBC’s Velshi.
The post Mary Trump Lashes Out At ‘Ridiculous’ Prosecution Argument Against Jailing Trump For Contempt first appeared on Mediaite.

 679.
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) claimed that right-wing organizations connected to former president and presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump have training camps “up in the hills” preparing to attack if Trump loses the 2024 election during an appearance on MSNBC’s The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.

 680.
“Trump says in that in that Time interview interview that he would not seek to overturn or ignore the Constitution’s prohibition on a third term,” noted eponymous host Jonathan Capehart.

 681.
“Should the American people believe that? Do you believe that?” he asked.

 682.
“No! Absolutely not,” replied Waters emphatically. “As I said, you can’t believe anything that Donald Trump has to say. Donald Trump will do any and everything that he can possibly get away with. He does not at all support the Constitution of the United States of America. This is a man who we better be careful about.”

 683.
Then she raised her concern over the supposed training camps:

 684.

And I tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to ask the Justice Department and I’m going to ask the president to tell us what they are going to do to protect this country against violence if he loses. I want to know about all of those right-wing organizations that he’s connected with who are training up in the hills somewhere and targeting, you know, what communities they’re going to attack. We need to know now, given that he’s telling us that there’s going to be violence if he loses. We need to know what his plan is and how we’re going to be protected.

 685.
During his interview with Time, Trump said he “wouldn’t be in favor” of an effort to challenge the 22nd Amendment and seek a third term.

 686.
“I wouldn’t be in favor of it. I wouldn’t be in favor of a challenge. Not for me,” mused Trump. “I wouldn’t be in favor of it at all. I intend to serve four years and do a great job. And I want to bring our country back. I want to put it back on the right track.”
