Experimental death metallers JOB FOR A COWBOY are pleased to unleash “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” the latest single from their long-awaited new full-length, Moon Healer, set for release on February 23rd via Metal Blade Records. The release marks the iconic outfit’s first new full-length in a decade!
Moon Healer is a vivid illustration of what happens when creativity, aggression, and volatility tangle for the first time in years. Like the band’s critically adored, 2014-released Sun Eater full-length, Moon Healer is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where Sun Eater left off.

Compared to past offerings, Moon Healer is as bone-crushing as JOB FOR A COWBOY has ever been. But it’s more consistent and conceptual, composed with the utmost enthusiasm and confidence. “The evolution of our sound has become a big part of the band,” Davy says. “As we mature as musicians, our tastes and interests naturally expand. With age comes more experience and ideas that we wouldn’t have considered in our earlier years.“
When discussing the lyrical genesis of songs “Grinding Wheels Of Ophanim,” “Into The Crystalline Crypts,” and latest single, “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” Davy’s writing gets cryptic and elliptical-sounding, part Philip K. Dick, part Timothy Leary. “I envision this as a death metal album born from the mystical confines of an alchemist’s laboratory. The music acts as potent potions, inducing hallucinogenic journeys that unlock the secrets of the universe.”
With “Beyond The Chemical Doorway,” Davy explores Gnosticism — an occult teaching based on Gnosis, a state of transcendence achieved through intuitive, unconventional means — by way of Hieronymus Bosch’s art. Elaborates Davy, “On Moon Healer, we unravel the dismal narrative of a close friend consumed by an unwavering pursuit of enlightenment. They achieve this through a compulsive embrace of hallucinogenic drugs. This storyline emerges from the foundation set in our earlier album, Sun Eater, delving deeper into the intricacies brewing within our friend’s psyche.
“When under the influence of these drugs,” he continues, “this individual claimed to encounter entities and find themselves in indescribable worlds that defy rational comprehension. Many who undergo such experiences draw intriguing parallels between diverse facets of Gnostic philosophy, biblical depictions of angels, and the stages of Bardo Thodol delineated in the Tibetan Book Of The Dead. In the album’s opener, ‘Beyond The Chemical Doorway,’ our friend vividly voices his hallucinations, recounting the experience of breaching forbidden, gnostic-like realms, with each account culminating in the utter unraveling of his being.”

Moon Healer was produced by Jason Suecof (Death Angel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) at his Audiohammer Studios and is the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Navene Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project Fleshwrought, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Koperweis also worked as a session drummer for Machine Head and Whitechapel and is currently in the band Entheos, whose third full-length came out on Metal Blade in March 2023.

Returning death metal outfit JOB FOR A COWBOY is pleased to unleash the official new video for their latest single, “The Forever Rot,” which was released to overwhelming accolades last week. The track comes by way of their long-awaited new full-length, Moon Healer, set for official unveiling on February 23rd, 2024 via Metal Blade Records. The record marks the band’s first new full-length in a decade!

Following previously released single, “The Agony Seeping Storm,” which displayed a mathematically mind-blowing hybrid of bludgeoning death metal specializing in unconventional riffing that echoes the resemblance of legendary experimentalists like Cynic, Atheist, and Gorguts, “The Forever Rot,” stands in stark contrast, delving into a lonesome and haunting guitar melody, then evolving into shimmering reflections of Obituary, Coroner, Voivod, and even hints of Neurosis. In other words, forget about your preconceived perceptions of what this band was. This twists vocal tropes, chord forms, and melodies into loops of razor wire.
Notes Schendzielos of the song’s accompanying video, “Jonny and I delved extensively over the past few years into the conceptual aspects of Moon Healer, and there was naturally a wide array of visual imagery invoked by the subject matter. We really wanted to bring the experiences of the character in Sun Eater/Moon Healer to life. The thematic elements represented are uniquely interesting to me so I was quite enthused to be able to take on the videos for ‘The Agony Seeping Storm,’ and now, ‘The Forever Rot.’ I’ve been pretty extensively diving into video production over the last few years with director Kyle Lamar from Digital Myle on other projects, so there’s a synergy that’s there with us already. His camera work is incredible and he’s got such a great grasp on every element of the process. Jonny, Kyle, and I really gelled (ha) together, and I think it shows in the final product. Extracting the raw, authentic elements of the song’s narrative, melody, and emotion, and translating them into a visual composition has been vastly artistically fulfilling and I look forward to creating more…from brainstorming, to filming, all the way through editing, it’s such a fun process to see our ideas come to fruition. It’s quite the ride…we hope you enjoy the trip!“

Like the band’s critically adored, 2014-released Sun Eater full-length, Moon Healer is musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. Featuring a newly refreshed and reinspired lineup of frontman and co-founder Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis, the band seamlessly picks up the mantle where Sun Eater left off.
But why the extended wait? “I had to take a step back in the band for family. It was the catalyst that eventually created a fork in the road for all of us. We all drifted into our separate paths,” explains Davy. “Fatherhood, additional music projects, academic degrees, and careers outside the band took priority and life’s focus,” so the band agreed on a prolonged hiatus, but with the door open for a return. “Everything lined up for us to collaborate on a new project together; it was time to cross the threshold for something new.”

JOB FOR A COWBOY delved as deeply into the music of Moon Healer, as Davy did for the vocals and lyrics. The band traveled to Sanford, Florida to record with producer Jason Suecof (Death Angel, The Black Dahlia Murder, Deicide) at his Audiohammer Studios. “We’ve gone through this same ritual with Jason for a multitude of reasons. But the most obvious one is that he’s a masterful songwriter, guitar player, and even vocalist. He has an ear for ideas that very few seemingly have. He totally understands where we’re coming from as a band.”
Moon Healer is also the first JOB FOR A COWBOY album to feature session drummer Koperweis (ex-Animosity). Davy previously worked with Koperweis in the progressive death metal side project Fleshwrought, which released Dementia/Dyslexia through Metal Blade in 2010. Davy furthers elaborates, “On MoonHealer, we explore a concept centered around a close friend who embarked on a relentless quest for profound enlightenment through the incessant abuse of hallucinogenic drugs, leading to a severe disconnection from reality due to the toll it took on their mental health. The song ‘The Forever Rot’ touches on their beliefs that human evolution and development have somehow led to the restriction of perceiving otherworldly or inter-dimensional realities and religious entities. It delves into their disconnection from the physical world and the notion that true vitality may be found in the ability to self-destruct and recreate. That some of the drugs they consumed opened these realities that evolution has closed the door on.”

Arizona death metallers JOB FOR A COWBOY return after a near decade long hiatus with their brand new single and accompanying video for “The Agony Seeping Storm.” The track comes by way of the band’s first new full-length in a decade, set for release in 2024 via Metal Blade Records!
JOB FOR A COWBOY released their Sun Eater full-length in 2014. The record received an overwhelmingly positive response, with Decibel Magazine confessing, “Fuck it, I can admit when I’m wrong… while I was busy pointedly not paying attention to them, these deathcore progenitors actually became a pretty damn good band.” In a 4.5/5 review, Alternative Press championed, “a full-on progressive death metal band… the songs have progressive sweep and epic power, at times recalling Opeth’s heavier work,” adding, “Sun Eater is one of 2014′s best metal albums, period,” while Metal Injection hailed an album, “that will be a solid brick in the foundation of the death metal genre with no gimmicks or trends to back it up.”
Ten years later, the band returns with their most volatile work to date. The as-yet-untitled full-length is at once musically multifaceted, unabashedly brutal, and compellingly conceptual. First single, “The Agony Seeping Storm,” is a mathematically mind-blowing hybrid of bludgeoning death metal specializing in unconventional riffing that echoes the resemblance of legendary experimentalists like Cynic, Atheist, and Gorguts. A newly refreshed and reinspired lineup – vocalist Jonny Davy, guitarists Tony Sannicandro and Al Glassman, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and drummer (since 2020) Navene Koperweis – seamlessly pick up the mantle where Sun Eater left off.
Issues Davy, “‘The Agony Seeping Storm’ gives a slice of our upcoming concept record. Regarding the video, the band collaborated extensively with director K. Hunter Lumar (Digital Mile), while our bassist, Nick Schendzielos, co-directed. The concept was inspired by a close friend who embarked on a relentless quest for profound enlightenment through the incessant abuse of hallucinogenic drugs. However, as they delved deeper into their religious-like experimentation they began exhibiting symptoms of bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They came to believe that they could access an alternate, esoteric reality through hallucinogenic intoxication, where they encountered gnostic and biblical figures and imagery.These songs reflect their thoughts, ideas, and experiences.”

Job for a Cowboy wrapped up touring in 2013 as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival that summer. Following that performance, the band collectively decided to sharpen their focus and set an intent on cooking up a record that encompassed their full dynamic range of talent. The group had all agreed on the main course being a desire for futuristic tones, a wider spectrum of textures and tempos, and an emphasis on slightly more ancestral song construction. The result, “Sun Eater,” does not just sound like a new record, it sounds like an entirely new band.

Audiohammer producer Jason Suecof, whose first bout with the band was 2009′s “Ruination,” has now worked with the band for over six years. Few are more familiar with how Job for a Cowboy operates in the studio than Suecof, and he was also feeling the “vibe” on “Sun Eater“: “This band is composed entirely of top notch musicians all the way around and they are clearly at the top of their game. This new album is a stellar combination of everyone’s efforts and what we have now is something that conveys everyone’s musicianship without being techy for the sake of being tech. This album has got feeling and it is fucking brutal!“

Guitarist Al Glassman discusses the song’s significance: “Bobby Thompson, who left us as a full time member in 2010, continues to remain a part of Job for a Cowboy always, and once again contributed an incredible track to the new record. For those who have heard “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48YhY-GOLSE" target="_blank">Tarnished Gluttony</a>” (his contribution to the last record), you will not be disappointed with his latest song. It’s moody and heavy as hell, and features some of my favorite guitar work on the record on Tony’s end. After years of writing with Bobby, I can honestly say that this is his best work yet with JFAC and I hope you guys dig it too!“
Producer Jason Suecof, vocalist Jonny Davy, guitarists Al Glassman and Tony Sannicandro, bassist Nick Schendzielos, and session drummer Danny Walker have crafted a cerebral and accomplished piece of technical death metal. Job for a Cowboy wrapped up touring in 2013 as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival that summer. Following that performance, the band collectively decided to sharpen their focus and set an intent on cooking up a record that encompassed their full dynamic range of talent. The group had all agreed on the main course being a desire for futuristic tones, a wider spectrum of textures and tempos, and an emphasis on slightly more ancestral song construction. The result, “Sun Eater,” does not just sound like a new record, it sounds like an entirely new band.

Following the departure of long time skins-man Jon Rice, Job for a Cowboy, cognizant of the size of shoes that needed to be filled, in addition to the depth and versatility demanded by the new material, enlisted the services of Danny Walker (Intronaut, Murder Construct, Exhumed, etc). Walker’s mastery of his craft, coupled with his creativity and enthusiasm for the material, strongly influenced the outcome of the record, and it only takes a few minutes of listening to hear this is Job for a Cowboy at their finest.
Regarding composition, guitarist Tony Sannicandro recalled: “This album came together very smoothly. We had the concept before hand and I took it upon myself to try and portray that concept through the music. I took a much more melodic approach than “Demonocracy”: focusing on the structuring and the layering that would complement the story to my ears.” The other half of the guitar duo, Al Glassman, continued to be a driving force behind the band’s sound. Bassist Nick Schendzielos added that “Al riffs long and hard for greater the good of everyone involved. He really used a lot of foresight in his revisions during the writing process, creating ample room for me to mood-out the tracks with bass that you can actually hear. in the end I think we really brought the character out in each and every song.” Indeed, composition and songwriting was the focus here. With this new album, the band had the luxury of relative longevity in the core of their songwriting lineup. This led to a far stronger vibe and a much more realized final product.

Nick Schendzielos, bassist for Job for a Cowboy and Cephalic Carnage, has released his newest video, “Ol Dirty Wizard-1000′s Funking Dead Bass Shenanigans” on his YouTube channel “Bassfordays”. The video is the first featuring camera work from Matthew Zinke of Matthewknowsphotos, as well as the incredibly surrealistic masks from HyperFlesh’s Landon Meier who’s Walter White mask made huge waves at Comic-Con when Bryan Cranston wore the mask unbeknownst to the crowd. Job for a Cowboy are currently writing their fourth full length album, and the follow up to 2012′s “Demonocracy” album. Last week, it was revealed that the band would be moving forward without long time drummer Jon “Charn” Rice.
Rice personally explained the circumstances surrounding his departure: 
“As of this past August, I have decided to part ways with Job for a Cowboy. There are a few reasons for this, none of which I’m going to get into. That being said, I have no intentions of stopping touring or playing. I honestly love to tour and play live with new people, so I look forward to playing in new musical arenas in the future. The dudes and I are on very good terms with this and they understand the decision. They have a new record in the making and I’m extremely excited to hear it.
Thanks again to everyone.”
With a new album in the process of being written and scheduled to be recorded with Jason Suecof this winter, Job for a Cowboy have enlisted the immensely capable drumming talents of Danny Walker to fill in as the studio drummer. Walker is known for his work in Intronaut, as well as having performed with Exhumed, Jesu, Phobia, Murder Construct, and more.
Danny Walker comments on being a part of the new Job for a Cowboy album: “I’m thrilled to be working with these guys on this record! I look forward to challenging myself and contributing to a fresh and different outlet!”
Job for a Cowboy bassist Nick Schendzielos has offered the following update: 
“Well my friends the time has come and The Charn has officially decided to step off the JFAC train. Absolutely no hahd feelins or nothin! We love the dude, cherish the memories we made with him, and in all likelihood will be seeing him again very soon…which brings up the next awesome piece of news…

Job for a Cowboy spent their summer on tour throughout North America as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. Bassist Nick Schendzielos updates fans: “Mayhem was absolutely phenomenal. We want to send out a huge thanks – from the massive, rabidly energetic crowds every single day (despite the heat!), to John Reese and his amazing production staff, and to all the killer bands and crew we were fortunate enough to party/share the stage with. Now it’s time to get knee deep in riff-land to start composing our next full length record which will be coming out in 2014. We have a really exciting concept for the record and we can’t wait to share it with you guys! Til then, keep metal as an adjective!”

I’m flying out tomorrow to the Warwick Bass Guitar Camp at the Warwick HQ in Markneukirchen.

AMON AMARTH: 
AMON AMARTH have confirmed that they will be performing as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival 2013 in North America this summer. Not only will they be performing, but they will be on the main stage along with Rob Zombie, Five Finger Death Punch, and Mastodon! The entire confirmed lineup can be found at <a href="http://rockstarmayhemfest.com/" target="_blank">rockstarmayhemfest.com</a>. AMON AMARTH will be touring in support of their upcoming new album, which will be their ninth studio release. The album title, art, deluxe pre-order bundles, and new music will be revealed within the next few weeks.

Surtur Rising, the band’s previous effort, was released in North America on March 29, 2011 and landed on multiple charts worldwide, making it one of the band’s fastest-selling albums to date. Surtur Rising debuted at #34 on the Billboard Top 200, #6 on the Billboard Top Independent Album, #1 on the Billboard Top Hard Music Albums and #10 on the Indy/Small Chain Core Store Chart. The record entered Austria’s Top 40 Chart at #12 and Switzerland’s Top 100 at #20. In Germany, Surtur Rising entered the Top 100 Chart at #8 and the official Media Mark charts at #14 in its second week. In Canada, Surtur Rising came in at #19 on the Top 200 Chart, #5 on the Independent Charts and #2 on Hard Charts. BEHEMOTH: 
BEHEMOTH, Poland’s preeminent metal export, will be releasing a new album in 2013. En route to releasing their tenth studio album, BEHEMOTH will perform throughout North America as part of the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival. They will perform on the Musician’s Institute stage with Children of Bodom. Information on BEHEMOTH’s new album, including art, music, and behind the scenes studio videos will be unveiled within the next few months.
The LA Weekly heralded BEHEMOTH as “one of the most compelling live presences in metal” while maintaining the year-and-a-half hiatus (due to Nergal’s battle with leukemia) served only to elevate the band’s intensity, which North American fans most recently experienced during 2012′s Decibel Magazine Tour. BEHEMOTH’s latest full length album, Evangelion, achieved gold status in Poland and debuted at #56 on the Billboard Top 200 Charts in the US upon its release in 2009.
JOB FOR A COWBOY: 
JOB FOR A COWBOY are confirmed to perform as part of Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest 2013. The band will be performing all summer long on the Jagermeister Stage alongside Machine Head, Battlecross, Butcher Babies, and Huntress. This will be JOB FOR A COWBOY’s second time performing on what has become the largest touring metal festival in North America.

Following Europe, they will join Hatebreed</b. and Every Time I Die for an April tour that culminates with a performance at the fifteenth annual New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. BATTLECROSS: 
Detroit, Michigan’s BATTLECROSS will be spending their summer in the most metal of ways: performing on the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest 2013. They will be performing on the Jagermeister Stage with Machine Head, Job for a Cowboy, Butcher Babies, and Huntress. BATTLECROSS are currently at Audiohammer Studios with producer Mark Lewis to record their sophomore album. New music, art and other new album info will be unveiled over the next few months, leading up to the festival.
In addition to the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Fest, BATTLECROSS had previously confirmed their appearance at this year’s Orion Music & More Festival in their hometown of Detroit, MI. The lineup, of course, features festival founders Metallica along with Red Hot Chili Peppers, Deftones, Rise Against, and many more.
Pursuit of Honor‘s three singles ‘Push Pull Destroy,’ ‘Man of Stone’ and ‘Breaking You,’ spent more than 50 combined weeks on Sirius XM Liquid Metal ‘Devil’s Dozen’ list of most requested songs, with ‘Push Pull Destroy’ at the top spot for five weeks last spring. Comments the band: “We are all excited to announce that we will be heading back over to Europe this spring to participate in the Bonecrusher Festival. After some long and hard contemplation (uhh huh huh huh), we decided it would be best to get back over to the lands of beer and honey to throw down with our friends in Beneath the Massacre and cruise around with some other cool bands and try and have a good time. It will be our first time headlining a proper tour overseas in just about 2 years, and we are ready to play some tunes, drink some brews and crush some snacks. Allegaeon added; direct support from Cephalic Carnage, with I Declare War and Legion completing the package
JOB FOR A COWBOY has announced that they will be embarking on a short tour of the northeastern US, with select dates in Canada. Direct support on the tour will come from Cephalic Carnage with additional supporting acts I Declare War, label mates Allegaeon, as well as Legion. The tour will begin December 6th and wraps up on December 18th.
Founding member and vocalist Jonny Davy adds: “Hey guys! We’re very excited to announce our first headlining run in almost two years! This will be an incredible tour with the lineup we’ve put together. We have one more special guest to announce as well as a couple more tricks up our sleeve. Do not miss this tour! It’s going to be a rager!”
ALLEGAEON vocalist Ezra Haynes expresses the band’s enthusiasm for returning to the road: “We are beyond excited to be a part of this upcoming tour with Job for a Cowboy, Colorado’s own Cephalic Carnage, I Declare War and Legion. Drum Magazine Catches Up With Jon Rice; Band To Play Russia, Ukraine And Belarus

Additionally, Drum Magazine recently caught up with Rice to talk about his natural sounding approach to the critically-lauded record noting, “If you detect more of a feel-oriented style on JOB FOR A COWBOY‘s Demonocracy, credit Jon ‘The Charn’ Rice for that extra bit of human touch. Eschewing sound replacement, scientific Pro Tools quantizing, and the usual by-the-numbers approach favored by most death metal bands (and their power hungry producers), Charn and JFAC did it old school; well, almost. While the band certainly used computers to keep the perfect beast drummer in perfect time, they didn’t follow the typical click track route. Similarly, Charn opted for natural drum tones and sounds. The video streams the fascination of religion and the actions people justify in the name of religion, and this video is a spin on the old biblical tale of Abraham and Isaac, however, set in the world of Lovecraftian mythology. The point is, acting blindly in faith to a Christian deity is just as absurd as worshiping squid like monsters from space who live under the sea.”

The Red Chord’s Mike “Gunface” McKenzie To Fill In For Nick Schendzielos
JOB FOR A COWBOY are currently readying for their month-long Summer Slaughter trek, set to commence next week in Los Angeles. Bassist Nick Schendzielos will be forced to sit out part of the run due to a family emergency. The band will be joined temporarily by The Red Chord guitarist Mike “Gunface” McKenzie.
Comments Schendzielos: “Hey friends: On June 28, immediately after landing in Boston to rehearse for Puerto Rico/Summer Slaughter, my girlfriend was in a head-on collision on her scooter. She sustained very serious head and bodily injuries. I flew right home, and we’ve been in the ICU for a week and are still in the hospital to make sure everything is okay. She needs 24/7 supervision for at least two weeks once we get out of here, so I’m very grateful to announce that Gunface from The Red Chord is going to help me out filling in on Summer Slaughter until I can meet back up with it. We love the dude very much and it’s going to be really cool for both JFAC and TRC fans to see. Enormous thanks for understanding this difficult situation and I’ll be back as soon as possible!”
Adds McKenzie: “I’m excited to be playing with JFAC on this tour. Great dudes in this band as well as in the bands on Summer Slaughter. Playing bass is a little different for me but definitely an interesting challenge. I’m definitely looking forward to getting out on the road again. Nick’s bass work is incredible and I’m working hard to get all of his parts down. Sending positive vibes out to him and his lady.”
JOB FOR A COWBOY will be touring in support of Demonocracy, released earlier this Spring through Metal Blade Records. Called “…an ass-kicking, skull-cracking record,” by Alternative Press and “…a very strong exercise in slickly-produced, technically sound death metal…” by Decibel, the maniacal Jason Suecof-produced masterwork tackles a host of political and economic themes and continues to raise the eyebrows of fans and media alike.
