To cross the Tigris river from Iraqi Kurdistan into northeastern Syria is to journey between two different worlds. Over centuries, this has often been the way for this great river: the boundary between rival empires and a contested waterway that remains the key to life for millions.

The rickety pontoon bridge gives an inkling of what is to come as you leave behind the largely well-developed and functioning Kurdistan Regional Government for an area of Syria that is isolated, vulnerable and economically destitute. The road up from the river is near-impassable, scarred with massive potholes.

The Kurdish-dominated area of northern Syria, which many Kurds prefer to call Rojava, is surrounded by what they perceive to be rivals and enemies. The Turkish border is walled off or lined with barbed wire.

In every meeting I attended, my interlocutors broached the impacts of the sectarian violence carried out in Syria’s coastal regions in March. The underlying but unexpressed fear was clear: we could be next.

Representatives from Arab, Christian, Armenian, Alawi, Yazidi and Kurdish communities made this point routinely. Few expressed much trust in the platitudes of the new authorities in Damascus.

The most overwhelming sense was of a region that has been obliterated economically. Although reports of smuggling networks abounded, most shops were shuttered. Everyone relied on primitive generators for electricity. Occasionally, a lucky few had access to solar power.

At night, few lights could be seen on the streets. The area also suffered from a lack of water. Once the breadbasket of Syria, having replaced the Hawran in the south from the 1950s, the flat, fertile lands were now largely untilled.

Crippling sanctions

Myriad reasons were given for this dismal situation: war, Turkish incursions and the fight against the Islamic State (IS) group. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) are also not innocent. Human rights groups have highlighted significant issues with detaining political activists and the recruitment of child soldiers, some as young as 12, by groups associated with the SDF.

Qamishli and Hasakah were on the front lines of that struggle. IS remains a threat to this day, claiming around 300 attacks last year - more than double the previous year’s figure.

US and European sanctions have also contributed to crippling the Syrian economy. Nobody will invest until American sanctions are eased.

Oil fires blazed where the population was forced to use crude methods to extract resources. You can smell it in the air everywhere. One can only imagine the health impacts and environmental damage.

What is needed now is an easing of sanctions to provide a tangible political and economic horizon

On a humanitarian level, many people complained to me that international aid had dried up, as NGOs had shifted their focus to Damascus. The needs are great. Overall, half the Syrian population is still food insecure.

Throughout this area in the north, there are camps for both refugees and internally displaced people. Many have fled recently after the fall of former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime and Turkish attacks.

The presence of external actors is extraordinary. We passed the Russian base at Qamishli airport, and then soon after, we passed an American base. Russian military patrols still go down the main highway. Where else can you find Russian and American forces deployed so close together?

The US has announced it is reducing its force deployment in Syria, closing three of its eight bases in the northeast. Yet, their presence is seen by many as crucial to the anti-IS coalition, with around 10,000 of the group’s fighters still detained in northeastern Syria.

The sheer presence of American forces acts as a deterrent to IS, who are looking for any opportunity to rise again, but also acts as a buffer to keep Turkish-backed forces and Kurdish groups from fighting. But eventually, Syrians will want to see all foreign forces out of the country.

Hopeful sign

During my visit to the region, the upbeat assessment was that a ceasefire with Turkey had been holding for more than three weeks. The drone attacks had stopped. The Euphrates now forms the de facto border between areas controlled by the SDF and those controlled by Turkish-backed forces.

The deal signed in March between Damascus and the SDF was also a hopeful sign. The Kurdish National Council and other parties have been working towards building on this deal, but significant divisions remain.

SDF leader Mazloum Abdi, a key partner for the US in its fight against IS, told me that recent meetings with authorities in Damascus had gone well, as American helicopters hovered nearby in what looked like training exercises.

Abdi was also upbeat about progress with Turkey, which itself views the SDF as a terrorist organisation and an extension of the proscribed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK). While he described the Turkish threat as an “existential challenge”, Abdi appeared grimly determined to make headway with both Damascus and Ankara.

His optimism might not be totally misplaced. PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan, the political and spiritual leader for many of Syria’s Kurds, called on the group to disarm in February.

This represents an opportunity to end the conflict inside Turkey that has killed 40,000 people over 40 years. It would also have major implications for both Syrian and Iraqi Kurds. A genuine peace would reassure the Turkish leadership.

Ending the fighting in northern Syria would enhance the country’s prospects for long-term stability. This should matter to all international actors, from the Middle East to Europe.

What is needed now is an easing of sanctions to provide a tangible political and economic horizon. In the rosiest scenario, this would deal a huge blow to extremist groups such as IS and give confidence to Syrians looking to return to their beloved homeland.

This is a long road with plenty of potholes, but it is definitely worth the journey.

With no official communication confirming such intentions in a region marked by escalating tensions, some factions remain unmoved by what they describe as media speculation rather than a concrete policy initiative.

Last week, Middle East Eye revealed that Abbas is set to visit Lebanon on 19 May and call on all Palestinian factions to disarm, including his own Palestinian National Liberation Movement, more commonly known as Fatah.

In contrast, Fatah’s leadership in Lebanon struck a more diplomatic tone, welcoming dialogue and calling for better arms regulation - without explicitly endorsing disarmament.

“The president’s visit is not solely about weapons. It is a statesman’s visit of support and goodwill for the new Lebanese presidency,” said Sarhan Sarhan, Fatah's deputy secretary in Lebanon.

While affirming that Fatah’s arms are “disciplined, individually held, and securely stored”, Sarhan noted the group's openness to discussion and reiterated support for Lebanon’s sovereignty.

“We are entering a new phase after the war on Gaza and Lebanon. There are more urgent matters for the president to address, such as terrorism in the camps and Unrwa funding,” he told MEE.

“We have achieved much through diplomacy. Twenty-two percent of Palestinian land has been liberated, and nearly a million Palestinians have returned. Gaza reminds us all that armed confrontation comes at a great cost.”

Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad - both key players in Lebanon’s refugee camps and political rivals of Abbas - have largely remained silent on the planned disarmament announcement, with members of both groups declining to comment to MEE.

Law and order

On the ground, however, the debate about disarmament is interpreted in more complex and often contradictory ways.

Palestinian refugees are not always clear which weapons are being targeted, whether those held by organised factions or by criminals who have taken root in some of the camps.

While Palestinian factions control a range of light to medium weapons, they are not the only armed actors in the camps.

In the absence of a central authority, some camps have become havens for fugitives and drug traffickers, elements widely rejected by the community.

Residents frequently express frustration over this deterioration of internal order. For many, the problem is not the presence of arms, but the lack of control over their use.

'In this unstable environment, who is going to protect us?'

- Abu Omar, refugee camp popular committee member

“Weapons should not be in just anyone’s hands, especially when those people aren’t the best people,” said Amal Abou Ramadan from Burj el-Barajneh, a refugee camp in southern Beirut that has witnessed repeated shootings.

“When these bad people hold arms, it becomes a source of danger to us. Someone should regulate.”

Yet, for others, the question of internal control cannot be separated from external threats. In a country where weapons are widespread and state protection uneven, the idea of disarmament evokes fears of vulnerability.

Abu Omar, a member of the popular committee in Burj al-Barajneh, recalled a recent incident.

“During Ramadan, a truck carrying aid to Nahr al-Bared, where the camp is fully disarmed, was attacked by Lebanese men who seized the supplies. There was no one to defend the truck. In this unstable environment, who is going to protect us?”

This tension lies at the heart of the disarmament debate. While the community seeks order and safety within the camps, it remains wary of exposure in a broader security landscape where the state does not fully control the monopoly on violence.

The push to disarm Palestinian factions is viewed as part of a broader effort to reshape Lebanon’s political landscape, following a major setback for Hezbollah after Israeli strikes last year eliminated much of its leadership.

US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee has played down speculation that President Donald Trump is snubbing Israel by excluding it from his upcoming Middle East tour.

Speaking to Israel’s Channel 12, Huckabee explained that Trump’s itinerary — which includes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates — is shaped by a focus on economic ties, not a slight against Israel.

“His first trip is about economic opportunity. That’s where his focus is,” Huckabee said. “What he’s doing is not because he’s snubbing Israel… he’s spent more time with the prime minister of Israel than he has with any other world leader. I think that says a lot.”

Huckabee sought to reassure Israelis that Trump remains a strong supporter of the country. “I would just say to people, ‘relax, calm down, Donald Trump loves you… he’s got your back.’”

On Iran, Huckabee was asked if the US would greenlight Israeli military action should Tehran remain a threat even after a possible nuclear deal. The ambassador replied, “Israel has the right to do what it has to do,” while noting that Washington would offer its own “recommendations.”

He also pushed back against reports of tension between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling claims the former president had distanced himself “a very unfair characteristic.”

“Prime Minister Netanyahu has spent more time with President Trump than I have in the past couple of months,” he said, adding that their ties remain “warm and personal.”

In an interview with Israeli outlet Ynet on Thursday, Moshe Yaalon, who also served as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s defence minister between 2013 and 2016, said Israel had abandoned the captives held by Hamas and was carrying out a campaign of “ethnic cleansing” in Gaza.

Yaalon attacked the current military chief of staff, Eyal Zamir, saying he was not stopping “clearly illegal orders” and was ordering “his soldiers to be war criminals”.

“Call it ethnic cleansing, call it transfer, call it deportation - it’s a war crime,” Yaalon said, describing plans led by far-right Israeli ministers Bezalel Smotrich and Itamar Ben Gvir to occupy the entire Gaza Strip and evacuate its Palestinian population.

Israeli father Michel Illouz, whose son died in Gaza, took the stage at Saturday’s protest in Tel Aviv, denouncing the Israeli government’s plan to expand its military operation in the enclave.

Speaking to the crowd calling for the release of captives, Illouz warned that the offensive, authorised earlier this week by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet, could endanger the very people it claims to rescue.

"Our chief of staff said this week that a manoeuvre in Gaza 'endangers the lives of the hostages.' Do you get it? The Israeli government is about to launch a military operation that may endanger the lives of the hostages," he said.

Illouz, who has emerged as a vocal critic of the government's approach, questioned the legality and morality of the planned operation.

"As I see it, this is clearly an illegal order under military law," he added. "And obeying it constitutes a criminal offence. It is therefore an obligation – not a permission, not a right, but a deep obligation – not to obey it!"

He concluded his remarks with a series of searing questions: "I ask you – is a military operation that will kill our hostages legal? Is it moral? Is it humane? Is it Jewish? Is it Israeli? What the hell is this, if not a clearly illegal order?"

The protest in Tel Aviv was part of a growing wave of public frustration over the fate of hostages still held in Gaza and the government’s handling of negotiations.

The UN agency for children has voiced strong concerns over a new Israeli-US proposal to control aid delivery in Gaza.

James Elder, spokesperson for Unicef, said on Saturday that the draft plan “appears likely to exacerbate the ongoing suffering of children and families in the Gaza Strip”.

Speaking on behalf of the agency, Elder said the criticism extends to a newly proposed institution linked to the same strategy.

Aid groups have consistently opposed any framework that puts Israel, the occupying power, in charge of aid distribution.

“Using humanitarian aid as bait to force people to flee, especially from the north to the south, will leave them with an impossible choice: between displacement and death,” Elder said.

He added that there is a far simpler and more effective solution: “Lift the siege and allow humanitarian aid to enter to save lives.”
