I’ve got a confession to make: I do </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">not</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> have a green thumb. Like, at all. I’m the person who forgets to water the plant that </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">says</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> it only needs watering once a week. (RIP to the poor succulents that have come and gone from my life…) But guess what </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">doesn’t</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> require watering, sunlight, or special soil and still looks absolutely stunning year-round? LEGO flowers.</span></p>

<h3><b>It All Started With an Orchid…</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My love for LEGO flowers began innocently enough. I was gifted the </span><a href="https://amzn.to/3Yq3rEj" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><b>LEGO Botanicals Orchid</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> set for Christmas a few years ago and decided to build it one evening. I posted a photo of the final build on Instagram and honestly, I was </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">hooked</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">. Something about the delicate petals, the calming repetition of the build, and the fact that I wasn’t accidentally murdering another houseplant—it all clicked.</span></p>

<h3><b>Mental Health Meets Mindful Building</b></h3>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">There’s something so therapeutic about LEGO. I know I’ve posted before about how much I value mental health check-ins and little moments of mindfulness and for me, LEGO hits that sweet spot. It’s just the right balance of focus and creativity. You follow steps, click bricks into place, and suddenly you have this gorgeous creation in front of you.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">It’s also a fantastic activity to do with my kids. My son and I built the </span><a href="https://amzn.to/4cZcTV4" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><b>LEGO Icons Bonsai Tree</b></a><span style="font-weight: 400;"> together over March Break, and I </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">love</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> that the tree has both green leaves </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">and</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> pink cherry blossom options. We may or may not switch it depending on the season (okay, </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">I</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;"> switch it, and he helps me find the pieces <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/15.1.0/72x72/1f605.png" alt="😅" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" />).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">My biggest and most colourful project yet has been my </span><b>LEGO Flower Wall</b><span style="font-weight: 400;">. I’ve been slowly working on it for </span><i><span style="font-weight: 400;">almost a year</span></i><span style="font-weight: 400;">, adding pieces here and there from several <a href="https://tr.ee/MONILj" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flower kits</a> in between work, life, and bedtime routines. It’s finally finished and I’m so happy to have found the perfect place on the wall for it where we can enjoy it every day. It’s been such a joyful project to watch come to life—literally a wall of flowers that never wilt!<br>

I did use a few <a href="https://amzn.to/4d6ccJM" target="_blank" rel="noopener">off-brand brick kits</a> from <a href="https://amzn.to/4cXwghc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Amazon</a> because they were less expensive and in the end I found some of those flowers to be more unique and eye-catching than the name brand. They made perfect statement pieces for the project, like the white lily in the top right corner and the pink flower in the photo below.<br>

<p>It’s been a while since I’ve posted here, and there’s a good reason for that! After nearly 20 years with the TDSB, I made a big change and moved to an independent school, taking on a new role as a Technology and Design teacher. It’s been an exciting transition, and I’m absolutely loving it. I now have the opportunity to explore new tools and innovative resources in my classroom, which I hope will spark more upcoming posts.</p></blockquote>

<p class="p1">Today is Rare Disease Day, a day to raise awareness and advocacy for rare diseases that impact millions of people worldwide. One such rare disease is Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH), a condition that I was diagnosed with in 2021. This diagnosis has changed my life in many ways, and I’d like to share my experience living with IIH in the hopes of raising awareness about this condition.</p>

<p class="p1">IIH is a condition where the pressure inside the skull is elevated, leading to debilitating headaches that aren’t manageable with OTC medications, visual disturbances, pulsatile tinnitus, and other symptoms. It is most commonly diagnosed in women of childbearing age, and its cause is unknown, hence the name “idiopathic.” While it is a rare disease, its incidence is increasing, and there is still much that is unknown about it. I was diagnosed via lumbar puncture (spinal tap) in September 2021.</p>

<p class="p1">Living with IIH has been a challenging experience for me. The headaches were constant (sometimes lasting weeks), and they are unmanageable by any medication. I have tried many different medications since 2021, and while some have helped with pain management, they have also had negative side effects, such as cognitive impairment. As a result, I’m not as “on top” of things as I used to be, which has been a difficult adjustment for my type-A personality. This has been a significant change for someone like me, who has always been highly involved in everything I do. I have had to learn to prioritize self-care and pacing myself, which has been challenging in a culture that values productivity and achievement above all else.</p>

<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.mrsgeekchic.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_4969.heic?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignnone size-full wp-image-2217" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.mrsgeekchic.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/02/IMG_4969.heic?w=640&ssl=1" alt="" loading="lazy"></a><strong>One of the most challenging aspects of living with IIH is the lack of visibility of the condition.</strong> People can rarely see that I’m suffering, and they still expect me to be my bubbly, fun-loving, and creative self. It can be challenging to explain to others why I can’t do everything I used to do or why I need to cancel plans at the last minute.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>It’s a hidden disability, and it can be isolating.<br>
My passion for educational technologies has also been impacted by my IIH diagnosis. I’ve had to distance myself from many of the EdTech communities I used to be involved in because I’m afraid I can’t keep up anymore. I’ve let my blog grow virtual cobwebs, and I’ve missed meetings and calls for fear that I’d blank out, forget words (due to medication side effects), or have little to contribute.</p>
<p class="p1">Living with IIH has put a strain on my mental health, my relationships, and my work. But I’m one of the lucky ones. I don’t have to worry about losing my eyesight, which is one of the main concerns with IIH. I’m fortunate that I can manage to work every day, but many people with IIH can’t.</p>
<p class="p1">Living with IIH has been a life-changing experience for me and it is getting more difficult for me to “smile through it” and “pretend everything is fine”, so I thought today would be the perfect day to share my story with the world!<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>It’s a rare disease that not many people know about, and it can be a challenging condition to live with. However, I am so grateful for the support of my loved ones, close friends, and the healthcare team who have helped me manage the symptoms, and my mental health and remind me to always look on the bright side. I hope that by sharing my experience, I can raise awareness and advocacy for IIH and other rare diseases. And to those living with a rare disease, please know that you are not alone.</p>

I’ve been enjoying it but had to adapt to them not having 1:1 devices. When I posted the Google Slides Template – Crée ton extraterrestre activity on <a href="https://twitter.com/MrsGeekChic/status/1332781219210276866?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Twitter</a> I had a few private messages asking if I’d mind sharing it so I decided to do a quick post about it to share widely for anyone interested.

<p>The class I was working with has been studying space so I thought it would be fun for them to create their own aliens using a Google Slides Template. The activity reinforced some French vocabulary around parts of the body and emotions. We spoke about the aliens on slides 1-10 before making our own and discussed parts of the face and the “mood” the aliens were in. I put it together using some parts of a previous activity by <a href="https://www.controlaltachieve.com/2016/12/build-snowman.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Eric Curts</a> where students have to build a snowman and a template I found on <a href="https://www.slidescarnival.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">Slides Carnival</a>. I smashed both together to create <a href="https://bit.ly/SLIDESextraterrestre" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">this template</a>. I’m a big fan of not recreating the wheel as we all are, especially right now where everything we do seems more complicated than ever! You will find the template for your use or modification <a href="https://bit.ly/SLIDESextraterrestre" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">below</a>, click on the blue “Use template” button in the top right to make yourself a copy and edit as needed. It’s in French but can easily be updated to English because it isn’t very text-heavy.</p>

I think sometimes if we weren’t laughing we’d be crying…my heart also goes out to all of my colleagues who are teaching virtually right now! <p><span style="font-size: 1em;">We’re better together so let us continue to count on one another during these difficult times. I hope this post can help some of you get outside or get active and have some fun with your students.</span></p>
<p>After the reality of losing our libraries and my role as teacher-librarian a few days before school started, I had to pivot back to teaching physical education. I thought going back to something I already had experience in would make my life a little easier –think again! Teaching outdoors and with very minimal equipment was a big adjustment. I immediately reached into my old bag of tricks only to realize that a lot of those cooperative games I usually began the year with required too much contact. Reaching out on Twitter was my second line of action. I was able to find some wonderful ideas from colleagues across the globe. Social distance games & activities aren’t always easy to find so I thought I’d put together a blog post outlining some of my favourites and resources for anyone else looking for good games and activities that allow 2 meter distancing to play indoors or outside during the pandemic.</p>

<p dir="ltr">I was taught through a western eurocentric lens in school in the 80s and 90s. What’s more, through the French Immersion system, I was told that I was being taught the minority perspectives of the French (now Quebecois, Acadiens, etc.). And yet, where were the voices of First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) peoples?</p>
<p dir="ltr">The history and geography courses focused on eurocentric experiences in Canada; apparently, Jacques Cartier “found” Canada. I remember analyzing the drawings of interactions amongst the French, English and various FNMI peoples and thinking that the Europeans looked distinguished, educated and civilized while the First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples looked uneducated and primitive. I do not recall if we were explicitly taught this, but I do not doubt that there were subtle or even not-so-subtle instances that reinforced the view of the “backward Indian”. I recall us tittering in grade 5 at loincloths and bare chests. The teachers never seized the opportunity to teach us any sort of cultural proficiency, thereby reinforcing our primitive, stereotypical and prejudiced views. When learning about the Haida people in grade 6, the unit focused on Emily Carr and the lens through which she saw the people, cultures and the land. The barren land devoid of any people.</p>
<p dir="ltr">As evidenced in some of the examples above, much of the hidden curriculum focuses not so much on what is said or taught, but rather on what is left out. Missing perspectives from many different First Nation, Métis or Inuit peoples; European-drawn territorial boundaries; Sir John A MacDonald’s photo hanging in some schools; token drawings or artwork which depict the old way of life of FNMI people and freezes them in time; the celebration of FNMI peoples who helped the English or the French conquer the other (depending on which part of Canada one lives in); the teaching of subjects in isolation (modelled after the Industrial Revolution); the focus on sciences which are based heavily on inductive and deductive reasoning and exclude observation and land-based learning; the teaching about free markets and the idea that the more we consume, the richer we are and the healthier our economy becomes, etc.</p>
<p dir="ltr">A few years ago, cognizant of my gaps in knowledge and richness of experience, I returned to school to start my formal education about the histories, cultures, traditions, worldviews and beliefs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples from their many different perspectives. I began taking AQ courses at Queen’s University and OISE, and became entirely engrossed in what I was learning and discovering….. about histories and profound and multi-dimensional concepts of equilibrium, reciprocity and the practice of gratitude. I was astonished to discover so many bodies of knowledge, histories and ways of knowing that were kept hidden from me and settler communities by the Canadian government. I ended up taking 3 AQ courses (First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples: Understanding Traditional Teachings, Histories, Current Issues and Cultures, Parts 1-3) and 1 ABQ course (Intermediate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies) and obtaining an Ontario Post-Grad Certificate in First Nations, Metis and Inuit Studies from Queen’s. I continue my informal education daily as a settler ally and a lifelong learner.</p>

<p>As part of an assignment for the Intermediate First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies ABQ course, I was asked to watch videos on<a href="https://www.ontario.ca/page/videos-indigenous-voices-treaties" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer"> Indigenous voices on treaties in Ontario</a> and to create a vlog on what I had learned. In preparation for Treaty Recognition Week 2020, I expanded the video and translated it into French. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<body><p></p>I’m finally getting to this post after months of enjoying the summer with my family after COVID-19 quarantine and learning/teaching from home. I wanted to share the Student Virtual Room project that my grade 4-6 classes did during remote “emergency learning” in June. We had done some amazing work in Media Literacy classes where students created video games using various online platforms (Scratch, Kahoot, Google Slides, etc). I wanted to give them a fun way to showcase their work and anything else they’d been up to while away from school. The Bitmoji Classrooms were such a big hit with educators that I wanted to give students the opportunity to give it a shot at creating their own virtual rooms and an outlet to share their work.

<p>I’m sure everyone is busy with learn at home initiatives right now. I hope you’re all staying healthy and safe and this post can help spark some ideas for remote learning. <br><br>Last week I was contacted by an educator in Ottawa thanking me for my <a href="http://www.mrsgeekchic.com/storage-wars-customizable-cross-curricular-edtech-game-gafe/">Storage War$ media literacy template</a>. It’s always so nice to hear from educators who are using a resource I created in their classrooms! We’ve been chatting over email ever since and I’ve asked her to share her awesome updated “Learn at Home” Storage War$ version with all of you! <br>_____</p>

<p>Guest Post by Leslie Mott <a href="http://www.twitter.com/mrsmottandclass">@MrsMottandclass</a><br><br>I became familiar with Larissa’s innovative and user-friendly approach to enriching the curriculum with technology at a conference several years ago. I have used her “Storage Wars” activity as a media unit every year and my students love it! I love the fact that it allows for student choice, provides a range of activities so that all students can access rich learning, and helps students use a variety of forms to express their thinking. This year I was going to use it, but now that we are learning from home, I started to think about how our students’ experience right now is like the storage locker, filled with artifacts of a very different school experience. I took Larissa’s project and tweaked it so students’ responses would include a collection of reflections of their new, at home, learning experiences. The original project was so elegantly laid out that it was easy to modify it to my idea. I am so grateful to Larissa for generously sharing her wonderful ideas and inspiring me to try making it my own! <br>Here’s the new version I created for our current remote learning situation, feel free to share and modify! <br><br></p>

<p>Below is a sketchnote I drew with ideas from Todd Burleson that was also published in his book <a href="https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/35035189-the-green-screen-makerspace-project-book">The Green Screen Makerspace Project Book</a>. Note that the original sketchnote only had 10 ways but with the discovery of what Play-Doh can do for green screen magic I had to edit it in there and add number 11! Check out the #wormholechallenge on Twitter for more info on that!</p>

<p><strong>Here are a few of my personal Green Screen tips:</strong></p>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Watch what you wear – If you wear green or have any green elements on your clothing they can disappear along with the background! (sometimes this works for the desired effect i.e., making a ghostly-looking figure, etc…</li>
</ul>
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Lighting is key – Use bright lighting or put your screen in front of a window with natural light. Low lighting has less than favourable results.</li>
<li>Avoid shadows whenever possible.</li>
<li>A flat surface is best, try to avoid wrinkles if you use fabric because they create shadows and therefor different tones of green and makes it harder to remove the background.</li>
<li>Film your “green” scenes in landscape mode when you use iMovie. If you record in portrait mode it won’t fill the entire screen and your background image will be visible on the sides of the green video.</li>
<li>If you don’t have video footage of your own to use, try a stock photo/video site like <a href="http://pexels.com/">pexels.com</a></li>
</ul>
