In the recently concluded voting for the Lok Sabha, there were alleged instances of gifts and cash being distributed amongst sections of the electorate.

This time around also, there were widespread charges against certain candidates adopting a similar strategy, as it reportedly favoured them in reaching out to relatively lesser number of the electorates eligible to vote in the Council polls. Already, a few of them, who had taken the initiative to enrol voters into the list, have allegedly organised gala parties, sources claimed.

On Thursday, a group of BJP workers claimed that they had unearthed a godown in Anekal, where gift boxes, allegedly belonging to a Bengaluru Graduates’ Council candidate, were stocked. Election Commission officials raided the godown. “This is the tip of the iceberg, as the candidates have been preparing to hand out cash to the voters,” a leader said.

A teacher, who is also a political leader, and has been campaigning in the South East Teachers’ seat, revealed that last time, a particular candidate had fixed a sum of Rs 5,000 per vote, and was expected to double it to Rs 10,000 this time. In certain Council seats, such as South Teachers’, the value may go up to Rs 25,000 per vote. If a candidate can reach out to even half of the electorate through illegal means and be sure of getting their first preferential votes, his work is almost done, remarked a leader. Some 20 years ago, candidates would seek votes by just sending postcards, he recalled.

Unlike the Lok Sabha elections, there is no limit on expenditure in the Council polls and the candidates are not expected to file the same before the Election Commission of India. This may have come as a boon to certain candidates who intend to spend big in order to attain victory at all costs, observed a political analyst.

“Anything illegal, including giving freebies, is covered under corrupt practices, and we are raiding the godown where we have learnt that freebies are stocked. As for the legal expenditure on electioneering, there is no limit for candidates,” clarified Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Karnataka, Manoj Kumar Meena.

BJP complains against Congress over candidate distributing gifts

BJP leaders have filed a complaint before the Chief Electoral Officer of Karnataka against Congress candidate in the Council polls, Ramoji Gowda, who is contesting from the Bangalore Graduates’ Constituency, for allegedly distributing gift items amongst his voters.

I.N.D.I.A bloc will form government with absolute majority: Muniyappa

<atom:author><atom:name>V Velayudham</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1870124</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Elections 2024,INDIA bloc,K H Muniyappa</media:keywords>

Minister KH Muniyappa greets senior Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Rae Bareli on Thursday

KOLAR: Senior Congress leader, KH Muniyappa, who is also a minister in the Karnataka cabinet, said on Thursday that the I.N.D.I.A bloc will form the government at the Centre with an absolute majority. He spoke to TNIE over the phone after campaigning for former AICC president Rahul Gandhi in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh.

Muniyappa, a former Union Minister, said the Congress is getting good support from voters in the country. “It is time for the BJP to rest. People have decided to support the Congress and its I.N.D.I.A bloc partners. Even West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has openly supported I.N.D.I.A bloc,” Muniyappa said. He also claimed that Rahul would win Rae Bareli with a good majority. “Rae Bareli is a Congress bastion. Rahul’s mother and former Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, had developed Rae Bareli as a model constituency during her tenure as the MP,” he elaborated. Muniyappa also said that when he was the Union Minister of State for Railways, a railway coach factory was sanctioned for Rae Bareli, which is now employing hundreds of people.

Muniyappa said the NDA government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has failed to work for the welfare of the poor, the farmers, the needy, and the downtrodden. “Once I.N.D.I.A comes to power, we will work for the upliftment of the economically weaker section, farmers, and the downtrodden,” he said.

Muniyappa also claimed that after the first four phases of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, the BJP and its allies in the NDA are fearing defeat, whereas the Congress and its I.N.D.I.A partners are seeing a good response from voters. The Congress will implement all the guarantees promised in the manifesto, he added.

No one is speaking of 400-plus, contest on in all states: Sandeep Shastri

<atom:author><atom:name>Bansy Kalappa</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1871694</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>BJP,PM Modi,Amit Shah,Elections 2024</media:keywords>

Sandeep Shastri

With four phases of the Lok Sabha elections behind us, political analyst Sandeep Shastri is sensing a change as the election progresses. “What has changed is that BJP initially claimed this election is a no contest, now we see a contest in all states, it is evident,” he told TNIE’s Bansy Kalappa.

How have four phases of voting gone? What have been your biggest takeaways? Importantly, are you hearing that Modi is turning out to be a lesser factor?

Each of the four phases have been different because the states are different, and states think differently. One big issue has been poor voter turnout in all four phases compared to 2019, but 2019 was a special election. In states where non-NDA parties are in power, BJP has focussed on local issues and tried to contrast their narrative with the local narrative. From the BJP’s perspective, it is critical that PM Modi is the central piece of their campaign, everything revolves around Modi’s persona. What has changed is that they claimed this election was a no-contest, but in all states there is a contest, that is evident as the election progresses.

Any key states to focus on, come June 4?

The four key states are Maharashtra, West Bengal, where BJP has been trying to increase its share, Karnataka, where BJP won 25 seats last time but this time they are contesting only 25 seats, and Uttar Pradesh, with the largest number of states.

What is the impact of Siddaramaiah’s five guarantees? There are also pen drive allegations against MP Prajwal Revanna of the JDS, which is an ally of the BJP...

The alliance between them was for 27 seats, and the challenge will be to retain all. BJP faces three challenges: a resurgent Congress with its guarantees scheme, the embarrassment of the pen drive -- and some are keenly watching which way women will vote -- and internal discontent and rebellion in the BJP which was not seen before.

One criticism against the BJP is poor social representation, with most MPs belonging to the majority Lingayat, Vokkaliga, Brahmin communities, or to reserved sections...

BJP changed candidates in more than half-a-dozen constituencies, to beat anti-incumbency. This could have worked in Gujarat or elsewhere, but given the internal dynamics here, where many candidates had won assembly elections on other party tickets, changing candidates and criticism of social representation is true. For the Congress, many ministers refused to contest and instead fielded their relatives. Both parties are facing challenges.

BS Yediyurappa has been the undisputed star for the BJP. He has been very subdued this time.

After assembly elections, Yediyurappa’s son BY Vijayendra was given a free hand. This is visible in the selection of candidates, and there has been a rebellion. Yediyurappa’s energy and enthusiasm are not seen, perhaps age has something to do with it.

Maharashtra too is seen as a key swing state. There is talk of a possible sympathy vote for Uddhav Thackeray’s Sena and Sharad Pawar’s party. Will this help Maha Vikas Aghadi and I.N.D.I.A bloc?

This election is a test of ground level voters, and who they legitimise as the real NCP and Uddhav Thackeray’s Sena. BJP is contesting a majority of seats but if its allies are sinking, will they take BJP down with them? BJP, Uddhav’s Sena and Pawar’s NCP appear to be on the front foot, the others on the back foot.

In Bihar, can the RJD-Congress alliance challenge BJP, which swept the state in 2019?

The BJP is in a reasonably good position in Bihar but many do not say that of its other allies. There has been poor voter turnout in seats where its allies are contesting. The two forces to look out for are BJP and RJD. BJP seems to be on a reasonably safe wicket in Bihar, but not NDA.

Rajasthan could see seats going to the Congress, which was in power here until a few months ago.

There have been internal convulsions in the BJP. One caste group has gone against the BJP and Congress appears to have put its house in some order and fought unitedly. I will not be surprised if Congress snatches a few seats from BJP.

Finally, Uttar Pradesh, with 80 seats. What is your understanding of trends in this giant state?

In UP, BJP won 62 seats and its allies won two. The remaining 16 seats were shared by BSP, SP and Congress. This time, BSP seems to be struggling, SP and Congress seem to be doing well and have given more seats to non-Yadavs. This is the first major election where Akhilesh is leading in the absence of his father. BJP would be looking for Ram Mandir to yield seats, but the state is in for a tough fight because of multiple phase polls.

Amit Shah predicted a great showing for NDA in the South, with 10-12 seats in Telangana, 17-18 seats in AP, and expects BJP to open its account in Tamil Nadu and Kerala...

Last time, BJP won 29 seats and AIADMK one, which means they won 30 out of about 130 seats in the South. Whether Shah is right or not will depend largely on Karnataka. In Telangana, BJP will win more than 4. In AP, BJP is contesting only 4 seats. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, BJP’s vote share is expected to go up, but will it translate into seats is a big question.

One state Amit Shah pinned great hopes on is Bengal, where he expects 30 seats. It is the state which was uppermost in their minds when CAA was notified, and there is the Sandeshkhali factor.

2019 saw BJP climb up, and they want to take the momentum forward. Has the TMC response to Sandeshkhali been too late? They have been unable to groom a state leader.

BJP initially spoke of 400 plus but now no one is speaking of ‘chaar sau paar’...

Two scenarios: worst-case is remaining where they are or slipping to half-way mark, best case would be to do a little better than last time -- 370 for BJP and remaining numbers for allies. No one is speaking about 400-plus anymore.

Chitradurga skeltons case: Forensic experts suspect five of family could have consumed sleeping pills

<atom:author><atom:name>Express News Service</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1897566</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>sleeping pills,Chitradurga skeltons</media:keywords>

Image used for representational purposes only.

CHITRADURGA: The mysterious case of recovering five skeletons from an abandoned house in December 2023 has turned out be a case of suicide after forensic experts informed that the deaths could have been occured due to consumption of sleeping pills.

Superintendent of Police Dharmendra Kumar Meena in a press conference said that the final report received by the district police from the forensic science experts suggested that death could be due to complications caused by nordazepam and oxazepam drugs found in sleeping pills.

However, the exact cause of death could not be determined.

Further, he said that the forensic science experts collected as many as 71 items as samples from the house for analysis.

The analysis of the soft tissues of the skeletons showed the presence of drugs, he said.

Apart from this, the utensils from the house were also collected from the kitchen and showed traces of cyanide ions. However, the cyanide ions were not found in the soft tissues of the skeletons.

There is no material to suggest that they consumed cyanide, he said.

After receiveing information about an abandoned house by the people in the neighbourhood, the police on December 29 barged inside the house on Challakere Road in Chitradurga and found as many as five skeletons.

The house had remained locked since 2019. Based on a complaint filed by a relative of the family members residing in the house, the deceased were identified as Jagannath Reddy, his wife Premaleela, and their children Krishna Reddy, Narendra Reddy and Triveni.

Meena said that after the incident came to light, the forensic science experts from Davangere and Bengaluru visited the spot and collected samples for analysis.

The post-mortem was conducted by Dr Venu and Dr Krishna of the Forensic Medicine Department at Basaveshwara Medical College in Chitradurga.

The final report from the analysis confirmed that there were no bone fractures. The police investigation and the opinion of the experts suggested that the death could have occurred somewhere between the last week of February and the first of March in 2019.

“Going by the dates when the electricity supply was disconnected, LPG was supplied, and when the family members accessed bank accounts, we suspected that they must have died somewhere in February-March of 2019. The forensic medicine experts also reported that the deaths occurred about four-and-half to five years ago,” he said.

On replying to a query of recovering a letter from the house he said that they had not been able to ascertain who wrote the letter.

“As we do not have any written material to compare it with the handwriting in the letter, we have not been able to find who wrote it. However, I have asked the officers to probe it further and make some more efforts,” he said.

Karnataka: Bankers meet to discuss Central schemes

<atom:author><atom:name>Express News Service</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1897566</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>CD ratio,Bankers</media:keywords>

State heads of all banks and other dignitaries attended the meeting.

BENGALURU: The 165th State Level Bankers Committee (SLBC) meeting co-chaired by Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner (GoK) Shalini Rajneesh, RBI Regional Director Sonali Sen Gupta, NABARD Chief General Manager T Ramesh, Canara Bank Executive Director Bhavendra Kumar, and Convenor of SLBC Karnataka, Canara Bank CGM K J Srikanth, was held at the Vidhana Soudha, on Wednesday.

Addressing the committee, Additional Chief Secretary and Development Commissioner Shalini Rajneesh emphasised on covering all eligible population under the ‘Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana’ (PMJJBY) and ‘Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana’ (PMSBY) schemes.

In the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24 a CD ratio of 78.19% was achieved. The plan is to draw 0.75tmcft of water to Magadi for the Sriranga-Hemavathi lift irrigation project. Opposing the Express canal, the protesters symbolically threw a fistful of mud into the canal where work is in progress, and warned that the protest would intensify if the project was not stopped. Pro-Kannada activists also took part in the protest, which went off peacefully.

Sogadu Shivanna told reporters that the protest was an apolitical one, and he had also invited Congress leaders to safeguard the interest of the district. “The district was allocated 24.5tmcft of water from Goruru reservoir but was not getting adequate quantity of water as yet. Strongly opposing it, Additional SPP Jayna Kothari argued that the accused should be remanded in custody since he did not appear despite issuance of two notices.

The ASPP also pointed out that this court has no jurisdiction to hear the bail application as the offence of rape was also invoked in this case against the son of the accused, after the crime was registered in Holenarasipura Town police station, which is triable by the sessions court.

However, Revanna’s counsel argued that the anticipatory bail petition filed by the accused in this case was withdrawn in the first week of the month after prosecution informed court that no non-cognisable offences were invoked against him. Therefore, opposing bail is not proper.

The ASPP countered that the accused has to be remanded in judicial custody once he surrenders before court, and he cannot seek deferment of the hearing just because he is a politician. Till completion of the hearing, custody of the accused is necessary, she argued.

Revanna’s counsel argued that the accused was taken into custody by SIT in the abduction case registered with KR Nagar police in Mysuru district, and he could have been questioned about the crime registered in Holenarasipura. Even otherwise, the ASPP has no locus standi to oppose bail since the offences invoked against the accused are triable by a magistrate, he argued.

Adjourning the hearing till Friday, the court granted interim bail to Revanna, who left court after fulfilling bail conditions.

Meanwhile, Sathish Babanna, an accused in the kidnap case, was remanded in judicial custody till May 24, and Keerthi, another accused, was in police custody.

One dead as ticketless passenger goes on a stabbing spree on Mumbai-Bengaluru Chalukya Express

<atom:author><atom:name>Naushad Bijapur</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1876846</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Chalukya Express</media:keywords>

Representative image

BELAGAVI: In a horrific incident, a passenger travelling without a ticket stabbed one Railway Department employee to death and injured three others including a TTE on board the Mumbai-Bengaluru Chalukya Express when it was nearing Londa station in Belagavi district on Thursday evening.

According to a top police official, the dead railway employee was a coach attendant on board. The mishap is said to have occurred between 4pm and 5pm, between Nidvanda and Dobbespet railway stations. According to a senior railway official, “Visibility was low and there was a drizzle. A shepherd who was grazing them did not see the approaching train. The animals trespassed the railway tracks and died on the spot. The shepherd had taken a break and was at a tea shop nearby, when the animals walked on to the track and got hit.”

The incident happened 2km from Nidvanda station, where the train takes a left turn to head towards Hassan, instead of going towards Dobbespet. “Since it was at the curve, the loco pilot could not have noticed it,” the source added.

The information was not conveyed to the local station manager on Tuesday. “A level crossing gate staffer who reported for duty in the morning (Wednesday) noticed it and conveyed it to staffers at Nidvanda railway station. According to IPC Section 173, sexual assault cases should be probed within two months.

The letter, signed by over 100 writers, intellectuals, women activists, teaching fraternity members and other like-minded people, demanded a fair probe. Some of them include writers Vijaya, Kum Veerabhadraiah, Vasundhara Bhupathi, singer MD Pallavi and others, who have expressed their concern over the recent sex scandal allegedly involving Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna.

They stated that the sexual abuse has been happening for many years, but family members hid it, which is condemnable and punishable. In 1995 my wife (Sudha Murty) gave shares worth Rs 4.5 crore to the IISc. Today it would be around Rs 300 crore if only the government had allowed them to hold it. Since then Infosys shares have multiplied approximately 768 times. Lots of innovation are happening in the corporate world, they are also needed in academic institutions,” Murthy emphasised.

Explaining the importance of long-term vision from academia, Murthy said today’s entrepreneurs can give shares, maybe not a large donation, and once the company grows, the dividends will be significant and premier institutions can benefit. Institutes also need to have a roadmap for at least 20-25 years.

Kris Gopalakrishnan, President, ISF and co-founder of Infosys, said more resources need to be pooled from the alumni and general public for research. “Institutions such as MIT, Harvard and Stanford get endowment in billions of dollars. Today, (Indian) institutes are primarily dependent on government funding. We need more industry participation,” he added.

Infosys prize: Change in criteria

During the event, ISF announced that the annual Infosys Prize for Indian-origin individuals pursuing research is being steered in a new direction with the upper age limit for prize winners being revised from 50 years to 40 years to enable a transformative impact and mobilise young individuals.

All laureates from this year onwards who are based outside India at the time of winning the prize will also have to spend time at an Indian institute of their choice. The selected researchers will have to spend 30 days at a host institute in the country to build networks and spark conversations with research groups.

“The move is expected to promote early collaborations that could potentially transform into mutually beneficial long-term partnerships,” said Gopalakrishnan.

The Infosys prize consists of a gold medal, a citation and a purse of 100,000 US dollars. This year, the award will be given in six categories: Economics, Engineering and Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Life Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences.

Karnataka cops to get special financial

The issues discussed include management practices and conservation of the protected areas (PA).

In the day-long meeting, the officials discussed about not just tiger area conservation, but also conservation of other species. “We learnt a lot about crocodile conservation from Goa. The Goans learnt from us the turtle conservation methods and the Maharastra sought information pertaining to man-elephant conflict,” Vasanth Reddy, Conservator of Forests, Canara Circle, told TNIE.

“There are about 22 elephants in the Kolhapur region. They were keen to know about the rain barricades, elephant prevention trench and solar fencing. The officials will visit Bandipur Tiger Reserve to know more about management practices,” informed Reddy.

The officials also showed keen interest in crocodile conflict management to prevent crocodile attacks in Dandeli town and the measures taken up recently.

Ramanujam, CCF Kolhapur, and DFOs Uttam Sawant, Nanda Kishore and others from Maharastra, attended the meeting. Several DFOs from North and South Goa were part of the visiting team. The inter-state coordination meeting focussed on protection strategies, wildlife management, corridor management and forest fire collaboration. “This is the beginning of the new-age conservation where we will be meeting every year from now onwards. We will work out a plan of action, conduct joint patrolling and manage check-posts which adjoin the state boundaries,” said Reddy.

“We will also conduct joint patrolling in a few areas and share intelligence and information about poachers or other kinds of offenders,” Reddy said.

Good feedback for candidates in 13-14 seats in Karnataka: Congress leaders

<atom:author><atom:name>Bansy Kalappa</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1871694</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Karnataka,Congress,Elections 2024</media:keywords>

Prudent leaders said the signs are good for the party in about 13-14 constituencies.

BENGALURU: After the completion of Lok Sabha elections in the state, Congress is upbeat as the feedback and results of internal surveys have been positive for the party from most constituencies.

Congress senior leader Saleem Ahmed said the party has received positive feedback from its partymen from about 18-20 constituencies. But some prudent leaders said the signs are good for the party in about 13-14 constituencies.

When TNIE contacted the Congress unit in Davanagere, local leaders said they are fairly sure of the party doing well in all the eight Assembly segments in the constituency. The campaigning by party candidate Prabha Mallikarjun, who is pitted against BJP’s Gayathri Siddeshwara, received good response, they added.

Ballari workers and leaders too said the feedback from all the booths has been good for party candidate E Tukaram, who is contesting against BJP’s B Sriramulu.

The mood in Belgaum and Chikkodi constituencies in Belagavi district is in favour of Mrinal Hebbalkar and Priyanka Jarkiholi, party leaders said. This is because of a recent clash, where 50,000-60,000 members of one community attacked the houses of another community. Chamarajanagar could have veered towards the party’s Sunil Bose, up against BJP’s little-known N Balraj, they added.

But it is mixed for Bangalore South, where Congress’ Sowmya Reddy is contesting against BJP’s Tejasvi Surya. But Vivekananda is likely to give a stiff fight, sources said. “He was the backbone of former MLA SaRa Mahesh and former minister GT Devegowda and helped them in the previous Assembly polls,” they added.

Mahesh and Devegowda were said to have convinced Kumaraswamy to give the ticket to Vivekananda, though former MLC KT Srinkante Gowda was also in the race. Interestingly, it was Srinkante Gowda who introduced Vivekananda into politics, remarked a leader close to him. The South Teachers’ constituency has an electorate of 18,000 teachers from Mysuru, Mandya, Hassan and Chamarajanagar districts.

On Saturday, the BJP parliamentary board announced candidates for five Council seats out of six going to the polls. Ningaraj Gowda’s name too was in the list. The next day, the JDS leadership held a crucial meeting and resolved not to leave the South Teachers’ seat to BJP as JDS had won it previously with Marithibbe Gowda.

The BJP leadership, including former CM BS Yediyurappa, also favoured leaving it to JDS. But the hiccup is that Ningaraj Gowda is a candidate suggested by BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh, the sources said.

After filing his nomination papers in Mysuru on Wednesday, Ningaraj Gowda met several RSS functionaries and BJP leaders to seek their advice as to whether to continue in the fray or to withdraw. BJP has not issued the B form to him to declare him as the party’s official candidate. But he claimed that he will file the papers again on Thursday, the last date to do so, along with the B form. The deadline to withdraw the nomination papers is May 20 and will Ningaraj Gowda withdraw is the big question.

Double whammy: Drought or rain, it’s only loss for farmers in Karnataka

<atom:author><atom:name>Ashwini M Sripad</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1870293</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>farmers,drought,Rain,Agriculture</media:keywords>

An estimate of crop loss on 46.11 lakh hectares of agricultural land, and 2.06 lakh hectares of horticulture land was drawn up.

BENGALURU: On the one hand, farmers in Karnataka are facing distress due to severe drought, and on the other, sudden thundershowers are bringing fear of losing standing crops and death of cattle due to lightning.

Since the last week of April, heavy rain has been reported in many parts of the state, damaging crops. Farmers who depend on agriculture and horticulture in Chamarajanagar, Mandya, Mysuru, Haveri and Kalaburagi have lost banana, onion, tomato and other crops.

Srinivas Reddy, former director, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, said summer crops have been damaged. Sowing would have done by January or February but there was no rain this year. “In areas where land is irrigated or is dependent on borewells, farmers took up summer crops. In a few places, unfortunately, borewells too dried up and farmers had paid for supply of water from other sources. Such crops were also damaged,” he said.

According to Reddy, horticulture crops along with paddy and maize were damaged. “Horticulture crops which were ready for harvest were damaged. Due to their weight and heavy wind, plants collapse and nothing can be done for such crops,” he said.

Agriculture Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy said the government is aware of crop loss due to heavy rain. “For any loss due to natural disaster, the government will pay compensation. CM Siddaramaiah has already directed officials to take care of any losses. The respective tahsildars will take it up, and funds are with deputy commissioners,” he said.

A senior official from the revenue department said they are compiling losses and in a day or two, they will get the real picture. Apart from crop loss, farmers are also in distress as cattle have died in many places due to lightning. Recently, 50 goats and sheep and their shepherd died after being struck by lightning at a village near Hoskote. On Sunday, 20 sheep were killed in Chikkanayakanahalli of Tumkuru district.

On Friday, 14 sheep died in Chamarajanagar. Compensation will be paid to these farmers. After the Southwest and Northeast monsoons failed last year, the State government declared 223 taluks drought-hit, and had sought Rs 18,177 crore in financial assistance for drought relief. An estimate of crop loss on 46.11 lakh hectares of agricultural land, and 2.06 lakh hectares of horticulture land was drawn up. Recently, Revenue Minister Krishna Byregowda said the State government had paid drought compensation to over 32.12 lakh farmers. Officials are verifying documents of over two lakh farmers, and each has been given Rs 4,000.

Revenue department sources said they have also decided to compensate 1.63 lakh farmers whose lands were not registered under the compensation list. “Besides, there are 16 lakh farmers who have small landholdings, and the government decided to pay them compensation of Rs 3,000,” sources said.

Mango Mela in Lalbagh from May 24

<atom:author><atom:name>Bosky Khanna</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1872738</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Lalbagh,Mango Mela</media:keywords>

The area under mango cultivation in Karnataka is 1.48 lakh hectares, yielding 12–15 tonne of the fruit.

BENGALURU: Despite a delay in the arrival of the King of Fruits, the annual Mango Mela in Lalbagh Botanical Garden will be held from May 24 to June 10. The mela is being organised by Karnataka State Mango Development and Marketing Corporation Limited (KSMDMCL) and the Horticulture Department.

This year, the mela will be held despite the model code of conduct in force owing to the Lok Sabha elections.

An official from the KSMDML said that no mango tours will be conducted this year owing to the elections, harsh summer, and poor crop. “However, the demand for the mela from farmers and consumers is on the rise. We held a meeting with farmers, and they wanted the mela to be held in Lalbagh for better business,” added the official.

The area under mango cultivation in Karnataka is 1.48 lakh hectares, yielding 12–15 tonne of the fruit. However, this year, owing to extreme hot and dry weather conditions, the yield has been around 5 lakh tonnes across the state. “Overall, there has been only a 30% crop yield. The players of both teams displayed the logo virtually during a meeting with heads of KMF on Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Bheema Naik, chairman of KMF, told TNIE that through this, the aim is to enter the international market and tell people that KMF is not a local brand. It is the second largest milk union in India after Amul. “Nandini products are internationally available and through this, we want to penetrate the larger international market. Besides, we want to promote the sport. We sponsored Bengaluru Bulls during the Kabaddi league. We are also looking at the Olympics and IPL,” he said.

MK Jagadish, managing director of KMF, said, “Ahead of the world cup, we are launching our products, Splash and Bounce, for the domestic and international markets. The former is a whey-based protein enriched drink and the latter a whey-based carbonated drink. Both will be available in 200 ml tetra packs, priced at Rs 10 and Rs 15, respectively. Splash will be available in lemon, litchi, mango and strawberry flavours. Bounce will be available in orange, jeera-mint and ginger-lemon flavours.”

Jagadish said Nandini will open parlours in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah next month. Supply of sweets to Oman, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia will start.

Naik said the demand for Nandini ghee, milk and sweets is on the rise from Indians living in the U.S. A 15-tonne container with frozen Nandini sweets, especially Mysore Pak and peda, is being sent once in three months. Soon, a cafe will be opened in the U.S.

Explaining the reasons for KMF sponsoring Ireland and Scotland teams, officials said, “It is done through tendering and bidding processes. Given the economics, these two teams fit the criteria. We wanted to sponsor teams such as South Africa, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and even India, but they were already taken and the costs were too high.”

Power and water shortages threaten lives of dialysis patients in Karnataka's Mysuru district

<atom:author><atom:name>Karthik K K</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1875561</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>HD Kote taluk,HD Kote taluk government hospital</media:keywords>

Image of dialysis machines used for representational purposes.

MYSURU: While state and central governments proudly tout their efforts to bring quality healthcare to rural and remote parts of Karnataka, the ground reality tells a starkly different story.

In HD Kote taluk's government hospital, which serves a significant tribal population, patients confront grave challenges due to the lack of consistent access to power and water. Similar incidents may occur due to thunderstorms or dust storms.

Director General of Meteorology Mrutyunjay Mohapatra told TNIE that due to the prolonged hot and dry spell and less humidity, dust storms are being reported in states such as Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan. More such storms could occur in the coming days, he said.

“We have also issued an alert for thunderstorms in most parts of the country, including the ghats and southern peninsula, in the coming days till the onset of monsoon,” he said.

It is a regular phenomenon before the onset of monsoon. But the intensity will be higher because of the prolonged hot and dry spell. An official from IMD, Pune, said while dust storms and thunderstorms are not rare, they are not usual in a city like Mumbai, located on the coast. Monday’s dust storm was severe because of local convection and occurred because of less moisture in the air.

CS Patil, senior scientist, at IMD Bengaluru, said dust storms occur when soil is loose and dry, and when there is strong wind and less moisture in the air. It leads to poor visibility. Sometimes, it is followed by severe thunderstorms, like it happened in Mumbai. In Karnataka, there have been dust storms and pre-monsoon showers, but not severe ones.

Patil said before the onset of monsoon, thunderstorms, lightning and dust storms will occur. But their intensity will vary based on local factors.

Officials from IMD, Bengaluru, said it also depends on the formation of Cumulonimbus clouds (‘Cumulus’ means ‘swell’ in Latin, and ‘nimbus’ is ‘cloud’), which are dense, towering vertical clouds, forming from water vapor condensing in the lower troposphere which builds upwards due to powerful buoyant air currents.

Most parts of Karnataka, including Bengaluru, are now experiencing thunderstorms and showers with the maximum wind speed of 45-50 km/h.

Will develop govt schools with CSR aid, says Karnataka Deputy CM DK Shivakumar

<atom:author><atom:name>Express News Service</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1897566</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>DK Shivakumar,Corporate Social Responsibility CSR,developing government schools</media:keywords>

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah greets Ankita Basappa Konnur of Bagalkot district, who secured the first rank in SSLC exam, in Bengaluru on Tuesday

BENGALURU: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, who honoured SSLC toppers from government schools on Tuesday, announced a plan to develop government schools under CSR aid without relying on funds from the state.

Honouring SSLC toppers Ankita, who secured first rank, and Navneet, who bagged third rank, with Rs 5 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively, at his residence here, he said work on 20 government schools in Ramanagara district has begun. He said, “It may be speculative, but there is a chance of the I.N.D.I.A bloc forming the next government.”

Some say a multiphase poll like this could favour the ruling party, whose biggest campaigner is PM Modi...

Modi is the main vote catcher for BJP. Such multi-phase polls will facilitate his campaigning and also help in deploying resources.

The share market has seen a big correction. The satta market that gave the ruling party 340 seats earlier has brought it down to 280...

Share/satta markets are speculative. They also depend on the feedback from pollsters. Most pollsters conducting actual field surveys feel that for BJP, the going is not as rosy as it was projected about a month ago.

The PM is raking up communally divisive issues like ghuspetiyan and is speaking about the opposition receiving black money from Adanis and Ambanis...

This shows he is nervous. Maybe he got the exit poll reports that are not favourable for BJP. Last election, Pulwama/Balakot helped BJP. Since there is no such issue this election, the BJP would like to create some religious polarisation.

How do you see Karnataka polls going?

This election, I haven’t done any survey in Karnataka. But I can sense that Congress will do much better than the previous election. There is now a clear North-South divide. Many South Indian voters perceive the BJP as biased against the South.

How have the four phases of voting gone? Is Modi a lesser factor in this election?

In the four phases so far, the feedback is that BJP will lose some seats and there is a possibility that NDA could end up below the majority mark. Unemployment and inflation are major voter concerns. Many voters also do not like the dictator-like attitude of the present leadership and select targeting of politicians. This may impact Modi’s image.

Any key states we should focus on?

The states that can change BJP’s fortune are Karnataka, Telangana, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, UP and Bihar.

How big has been the impact of Siddaramaiah’s five guarantees and the pen drive allegation against JDS-BJP MP candidate Prajwal Revanna?

Siddaramaiah’s five guarantees have had a positive impact on Congress. If Congress does well in the state that could be one of the main reasons. Had Prajwal’s case come out a few days earlier that would have had a major impact in the first phase in the Old Mysuru region. This will have some impact in the second phase.

Maharashtra has been seen as a key swing state. There is talk of a possible sympathy wave in favour of both Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena and Sharad Pawar’s NCP...

Yes, there seems to be a sympathy wave in favour of both Uddhav and Pawar. This could help I.N.D.I.A improve its tally significantly in the state.

How big a dent can the RJD-Congress alliance make in Bihar?

Tejashwi Yadav had a big impact in Bihar. At the same time, Nitish Kumar’s image has taken a big hit. He is being seen as an opportunist. His party could lose many seats.

What about Rajasthan?

Many voters in Rajasthan are not happy with the choice of chief minister. This could affect BJP’s prospects.

What about UP?

In most states, including UP, socially disadvantaged sections perceive BJP as an upper-caste and upper-class party. Farmers are also unhappy.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah predicted Telangana would yield 10-12 seats and Andhra Pradesh 17-18 seats. He expected the BJP to open its account in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He believes BJP will become the biggest party in the South...

Not necessarily. Remember the last time when Pulwama/Balakot happened. Big swings can happen.

What are your indications from West Bengal?

BJP could get its tally close to the last election.

Who could be nearer to the 272-273 mark?

It would be speculative, but there is a chance of I.N.D.I.A forming the next government.

The full interview can be watched on the TNIE YouTube channel

Big whale behind Revanna’s arrest, bid to tarnish Gowda family: HD Kumaraswamy

<atom:author><atom:name>Express News Service</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1897566</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>HD Kumaraswamy,HD Revanna,Prajwal Revanna case</media:keywords>

Supporters of MLA H D Revanna in front of the residence of former PM H D Devegowda, where Revanna came to meet his father after his release on bail from Parappana Agrahara, in Bengaluru on Tuesday.

BENGALURU: Former Karnataka chief minister and JDS state president HD Kumaraswamy on Tuesday alleged that the arrest of his brother and former minister HD Revanna in an alleged kidnap case was politically motivated. A private TV channel interviewed him. The person is not traced by SIT but can be found in a private media office,” he said.

He also questioned SIT for not arresting Naveen Gowda, who had put up a Facebook post, hinting that Prajwal Revanna’s videos were coming out, and claimed to have handed over pen drives to JDS MLAs.

‘Not the time to celebrate’

Kumaraswamy suggested to JDS workers not to celebrate Revanna’s release on bail. “A most heinous incident has taken place in the state, and Revanna also had to face charges. He got anticipatory bail and I want to tell our party workers this is not the time to be happy. Celebrate when the wrongdoers are punished,” he said.

Felt bad for Revanna, this should not have happened to their family: DK Shivakumar

HD Revanna released from Parappana Agrahara jail

<atom:author><atom:name>Express News Service</atom:name><atom:uri>/api/author/1897566</atom:uri></atom:author>

<media:keywords>Kidnapping,sexual assault case,HD Revanna</media:keywords>

Holenarasipur JDS MLA HD Revanna departs from the residence of his father and former prime minister HD Deve Gowda, after his release on bail from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, in Bengaluru on Tuesday

BENGALURU: Holenarasipur JDS MLA, 66-year-old HD Revanna, who was arrested on charges of kidnapping a 47-year-old victim of sexual assault, was released from the Parappana Agrahara central prison around 1.30 pm on Tuesday.

He was accompanied by a few party MLAs and other leaders, while several party workers had gathered outside the jail to extend their support. He hit out at Kumaraswamy, stating that the latter was making unreasonable allegations, claiming to have a pen drive, which contained some serious data. “Kumaraswamy should immediately pass on the pen drive to the CM. The CM is close to Kumaraswamy,’’ said Jarkiholi.

Jarkiholi rubbished claims of the former CM of wanting to launch an investigation into the contents of the said pen drive, questioning, “How could the investigation be carried out, even before knowing what the pen drive contains?” He assured that the state government would conduct a fair inquiry into the matter if it gets all the details related to the pen drive.

Meanwhile, Jarkiholi said that he met Home Minister G Parameshwar to discuss the general election and the probable seats that the Congress could win.

On the demand by several senior legislators for more deputy chief ministers in the government, Jarkiholi said it was heard before the Lok Sabha polls in the state, since this issue was expected to help in the election. Now that the voting has ended in the state, such a demand has all but stopped, he added.
