46.

EL SEGUNDO — On some alternate plane of reality, the Kings would have had a skate before Game 6 of their first-round playoff series against the Edmonton Oilers on Friday morning.

 47.
In the here and now, they were taking physicals while soaking in the gloom of being eliminated by the same opponent for a third straight season, leaving them adrift in a sea of uncertainty.

 48.
“I fully expected to be playing in a game today again, and we’re not. Now I’m going to go home, my kids are at school, and I basically have nothing to do,” defenseman Drew Doughty said. “It’s crap, I hate it and I don’t want this feeling anymore. I want to be continuing in the playoffs, and not sitting at home watching the playoffs.”

 49.
If Doughty’s tone sounded testy, it was probably because the Kings have endured this fate or worse for the entire decade that has elapsed since their second Stanley Cup triumph in three seasons back in 2014. They’ve made five playoff appearances since, winning just seven games and not a single series.

 50.
“You’ve got to build a culture, for sure. The turnaround of players, now, it’s a completely different team than it was 10 years ago,” team captain Anže Kopitar said. “It’s about building it, we had to build it 15 years ago and we’re going to have to build it now.”

 51.
Now, more than this week’s schedule and some player personnel might change for the Kings. They made one coaching swap in February and might very well make another – after letting go of Todd McLellan they applied the precarious “interim” tag to his successor Jim Hiller – and could next turn their attention to the front office. General Manager Rob Blake acknowledged at his last media availability, in early February, that his own job was on the line.

 52.
“There’s a little bit of concern because you’re not sure what’s really going to happen,” said leading goal-scorer Trevor Moore, who added that he would focus on summer training and that “the rest of the stuff will get sorted out.”

 53.
Beyond the bench and the executive suite, there might be yet another even more fundamental change: a diminishing or an outright nixing of the 1-3-1 neutral-zone trap that the Kings have employed to the chagrin of some opposing players as well as some paying customers.

 54.
Even Kopitar, who said he believed the team could continue to enjoy success with the 1-3-1 system, described it in unflattering terms.

 55.
“Yeah, it’s boring, but we’ve proved it and shown that it can work,” Kopitar said.

 56.
Although Moore said the stodgy configuration got “a bad rap,” he also recognized that mixing in more aggressive alignments such as the 1-2-2 and 2-1-2 might enliven the Kings’ forecheck and lead to more frequent as well as better-quality scoring opportunities.

 57.
Other Kings forwards were more forcefully in favor of taking an eraser to the whiteboard, including last year’s team scoring leader on a per-game basis, Kevin Fiala, and this year’s most prolific producer, Adrian Kempe.

 58.
Kempe said systemic familiarity and the 11th-hour timing of the coaching change precluded an in-season reconfiguration, but that the offseason might be a period ample enough to implement something fresh.

 59.
“Moving forward, I would maybe like to, you know we tried some 1-2-2 here in the playoffs when we were chasing games, and for me it’s more fun to play a 1-2-2,” Kempe said. “You get a little bit more aggressive in the neutral zone, you can create more turnovers and I think we have a lot of offensive players who can capitalize.”

 60.
Fiala concurred, calling Kempe’s “the perfect answer,” but instead of dismissing the discussion, he steered it into a more analytical realm.

 107.
“We could create something on the forecheck. Right now, we kind of have to break out. In my opinion, the 1-3-1 is very effective when they try to go through you. Then there’s turnovers happening and we can go the other way,” Fiala said.

 108.
“But if they’re going to rim it or chip it every time, that means one guy has to sprint back and we have to get the puck out,” he continued. “When there’s guys coming at us with structure and they rim it from the right side and two guys are coming with full heat on the left side against our standing-still right winger, it’s not very easy to break it out. So, I feel like, obviously, it would be fun to try something else.”

 109.
Even with a potential tectonic shift that could include coaching, management, overall system, some combination thereof or even all three, the Kings felt they had foundational elements and potential to succeed at a higher level with most of their current group.

 110.
“We have everything,” Fiala said. “We have skill, we have grit and I think we have the perfect team, also, inside the room, where everybody loves each other. It’s a big family here.”

 127.
Fierceness owner Mike Repole and Sierra Leone trainer Chad Brown hope to end 0-for-7 slumps in the 150th Run for the Roses on Saturday at Churchill Downs.

 128.

By BETH HARRIS AP Racing Writer

 129.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Fate has not been kind to Mike Repole in the Kentucky Derby. The outspoken owner is 0 for 7, although he is perhaps best known for his two champions that never made the starting gate.

 130.
In 2011, Uncle Mo was scratched the day before the race because of a gastrointestinal infection. Last year, Forte was scratched the morning of the race due to a bruised right front foot.

 131.
Now, the self-made billionaire from Queens, New York, is back with Fierceness, the morning-line favorite for Saturday’s 150th Derby. The bay colt was last year’s 2-year-old champion and is coming off a 13½-length win in the Florida Derby.

 132.
Fierceness will have to overcome a bit of Derby history: No horse has ever won out of the No. 17 post.

 133.
“The horse is just a different kind. He does everything so easy, so calm, so cool,” said Repole, known for his high energy and using his account on X (formerly Twitter) as an incubator for racing reform and challenging critics. “A horse like this calms me down.”

 134.
A sharp-dressed crowd of about 150,000 is expected to jam Churchill Downs to wager and watch the 1¼-mile Derby. Post time is 3:57 p.m. PDT. The forecast calls for 79 degrees and a 40% chance of showers.

 135.
Fierceness is trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by John Velazquez, who have won a combined five derbies.

 136.
“I hope it doesn’t take as long as it took the Cubs to win the World Series,” Repole said of his efforts to bag one.

 137.
Like Repole, trainer Chad Brown is 0 for 7. He will saddle early 3-1 second choice Sierra Leone, who is known as a closer, and long shot Domestic Product. Sierra Leone is the priciest horse in the field, having cost $2.3 million.

 138.
Besides Brown, trainers Brad Cox and Danny Gargan have two entries apiece.

 139.
Louisville-born Cox won his first Derby belatedly when Mandaloun was elevated to first place after Medina Spirit’s disqualification nine months after the 2021 race. Now he has early 8-1 third choice Catching Freedom and 10-1 co-fourth choice Just a Touch, who didn’t race at age 2 like his sire, 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify.

 140.
Gargan’s long-shot duo is Dornach and Society Man. Front-running Dornach breaks from the No. 1 post for co-owner and retired Philadelphia Phillies star Jayson Werth.

 141.
“Hopefully he’ll break running and we’ll put him on the front end and see how it goes,” Gargan said. “We planned on keeping his face clean. Now we’ll keep it real clean.”

 142.
Society Man is ridden by Frankie Dettori, who is back in the Derby at age 53 after 24 years.

 143.
Larry Demeritte is just the second Black trainer since 1951 to take a shot at winning the Derby. The 74-year-old who has fought cancer for several years will saddle the star of his 11-horse stable, West Saratoga, a colt that cost $11,000.

 144.
“My motto is, ‘I don’t buy cheap horses, I buy good horses cheap,’” he said.

 145.
Japan is represented by early 10-1 shot Forever Young (winner of five straight starts) and 30-1 shot T O Password. No horse from that country has ever won the Derby.

 192.
A year ago, two horses died on Derby day at Churchill Downs, where a total of 12 horses died in the weeks surrounding the race. The historic track has deepened its dirt racing surface and added to its safety protocols in an effort to prevent more tragedy.

 193.
Last May, Churchill Downs suspended trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. after two of his horses died and it scratched his Derby horse, Lord Miles. He is back this week with Catalytic.

 194.
Six-time Derby winner Bob Baffert is not. The trainer had his two-year suspension for Medina Spirit’s failed drug test in 2021 extended to a third year by Churchill Downs despite not having any further medication violations.

 195.
Four-time winner D. Wayne Lukas saddled longshot Just Steel, ridden by Keith Asmussen, the son of trainer Steve Asmussen. The elder Asmussen entered Track Phantom in an effort to stop his 0-for-25 skid in the Derby.

 273.
Less than four years after moving from Brazil to Huntington Beach to pursue her goal, the flyweight is in Rio de Janeiro to face Ernesta Kareckaite at UFC 301.

 274.

The past four years of Dione Barbosa’s life can be described as geometrical, going full circle into an Octagon.

 275.
The former Brazil Judo National Team member embarked on an ambitious dream less than four years ago in pursuit of a pro MMA career. She left Brazil and moved to Huntington Beach to live and train with MMA star and countrywoman Cris Cyborg, helping the Grand Slam champion prepare for her Bellator featherweight title defenses while honing her own skills for her future in the sport.

 276.
The goal was ultimately realized in September, when Barbosa locked in a first-round armbar submission on Dana White’s Contender Series to earn a UFC contract. And what better way to debut in the UFC than to go back to her home country and face Ernesta Kareckaite in front of a partisan crowd at UFC 301 on Saturday in Rio De Janeiro.

 277.
“Oh my gosh, this is like a special moment for me,” Barbosa (6-2) said by phone on Wednesday from Rio, which is roughly 1,500 miles south of her coastal hometown of Recife on the easternmost point of Brazil. “I’m so happy and glad to be back in Brazil. I go to the USA because I really want my UFC contract and everything, so to come back to Brazil with my contract and fighting here is like the world for sure.”

 278.
Barbosa’s journey was even more challenging than it sounds. She received the opportunity to fight for a UFC contract eight months ago only after another fighter had to withdraw. That meant Barbosa, who turns 32 on Wednesday, had to cut 16 pounds on four days’ notice to make the 136-pound bantamweight limit.

 279.
No problem, right? Other than the fact that Barbosa is a flyweight and accustomed to fighting 10 pounds lighter and she was nursing a knee injury.

 280.
Then heavy rains caused the cancellation of her flight to Las Vegas. Undeterred by the downpour, Barbosa got in her car. The whole way, Barbosa was dead set on stepping in that cage: “I will fight. I will. I will. It’s my moment, it’s my chance. I will get my contract,” she said.

 281.
In the end, after driving nearly eight hours there, she needed just 4 minutes and 35 seconds to secure the victory.

 282.
Then came the waiting game. Barbosa’s was the first of five fights that night. A victory is no guarantee of a contract. So she had to agonize through four more fights before waiting to hear if UFC president Dana White called her name.

 283.
“When he said my name, I’m like, ‘Whew, yeah! I get it. Yes!’” Barbosa recalled. “I do whatever I need to do, but I never wait for a lot from people, so I really put myself in position and I can like make the work done. But in this situation, we have like no idea.”

 284.
Nicknamed “The Witch,” Barbosa gushes about Cyborg and the opportunity to learn from one of the sport’s greats and grow into the fighter she has become, which included earning her Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt. When asked what advice the Bellator 145-pound champ gave her, Barbosa says the biggest lesson has simply been watching the Brazilian legend go about her business on a daily basis.

 285.
Barbosa, who also trains at Huntington Beach’s Kings MMA under Master Rafael Cordeiro, has won her past three fights, as has the 25-year-old Kareckaite (5-0-1), a two-time Lithuanian kickboxing champion who earned her UFC contract on the same show three weeks after Barbosa.

I’m like working hard,” Barbosa said. “I did what I needed to do, like I do whatever I need to do. If my coach talks to me like, ‘Oh, you need like run every day like 20 miles a day for you to have the result you want?’ I will. So yeah, in my mind there’s no halfway and I just do what I need to do.”

 359.
After a record low in late 2022, the lake depth is about 4 feet shy of capacity.

 360.

 361.
 362.
After hitting record lows two years ago due to drought, Big Bear Lake reported a 10-foot increase in its water level in December 2023 and new data shows it’s risen even higher the first four months of 2024.

 363.
In December 2022, the water level at Big Bear Lake was just below 55 feet, officials said. Two consecutive winters brought heavy storms in early 2023 and 2024, resulting in significant rainfall and snowpack that have helped restore the lake after water levels hit a record low in late 2022.

 364.
As of Tuesday, April 30, the lake depth was 68 feet, still about 4 feet below its capacity, data shows. The lake hasn’t been full since 2011, according to Brittany Lamson, interim general manager of the administration department at Big Bear Municipal Water District, which manages the lake.

 365.
Over the past two years, the lake depth has increased a total of 15 feet, Lamson said.

 366.
Water levels affect recreation, wildlife and the local economy in the area. According to Lamson, the lake was still getting inflow this week. Any inflow after April 1 is good news for Big Bear, she said.

 367.
“This level of the lake is great for us,” she added. “We can utilize our east public launch ramp, which has our full operations.”

 368.
With the ramp open, lake visitors with boats can access inspection and decontamination services and buy permits. The launch ramp is open 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

 369.
The deeper lake also supports fish spawning, producing a better ecosystem all around, Lamson said.

 370.
The images below show the lake in August 2022 compared to March 2024, amid the second snowiest winter season reported in the San Bernardino Mountains in the past 25 years.

 474.
Former Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer, Nuggets assistant David Adelman, Warriors assistant Kenny Atkinson, Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, Celtics assistant Charles Lee and recently retired player-turned-broadcaster JJ Redick might all be considered.

 475.

The Lakers fired head coach Darvin Ham on Friday, ending his two-season tenure at the helm.

 476.
Here are a few of the potential candidates for the Lakers’ vacant head coaching position:

 477.
David Adelman, Denver Nuggets assistant coach

 478.
Adelman, the son of Hall of Famer Rick Adelman, is the lead assistant coach for the defending NBA champions and has been on Coach Michael Malone’s staff since the 2017-18 season.

 479.
Adelman, 42, joined the Minnesota Timberwolves as a player development coach in 2011-12 under his father for his first NBA job after previously coaching in the high school ranks.

 480.
He was a Timberwolves assistant for his final three seasons in Minnesota before becoming an assistant on Frank Vogel’s Orlando Magic staff for a season (2016-17) before moving to Denver.

 481.
Adelman received a significant endorsement to be an NBA head coach last season after serving as the Nuggets’ acting head coach in a Jan. 17, 2023 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers in which Malone was sidelined because of the league’s health and safety protocols.

 482.
“I really think that [Adelman’s] a guy who’s gonna be next head coach because he has that, I’m gonna say ‘head’ for a head coach,” Nuggets star Nikola Jokic said, according to the Denver Post. “… He knows the answers. He reads, reacts.”

 483.
Kenny Atkinson, Golden State Warriors assistant coach and former Brooklyn Nets head coach

 484.
Atkinson was the Nets’ head coach from 2016-20, with Brooklyn improving its record by at least eight wins twice with Atkinson at the helm.

 485.
Atkinson, who is considered one of the league’s top assistant coaches, has spent the past three seasons as an assistant under Warriors coach Steve Kerr, helping guide the team that won the 2022 NBA title.

 486.
Before joining the Warriors, Atkinson, 56, spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant under Tyronn Lue with the Clippers.

 487.
Atkinson has also been an assistant coach for the Atlanta Hawks (2012-16) and the New York Knicks (2008-12) after spending one season as the director of player development for the Houston Rockets (2007-08).

 488.
Atkinson was expected to become the Charlotte Hornets head coach during the 2022 offseason, but he decided to remain with the Warriors.

 489.
Mike Budenholzer, former Milwaukee Bucks and Atlanta Hawks head coach

 490.
Budenholzer might be the most accomplished coach available to the Lakers in this cycle: he won a championship at the helm of the Milwaukee Bucks in 2021.

 491.
The two-time NBA Coach of the Year (2014-15, 2018-19) has a regular-season head coaching record of 484-317 and a 56-48 mark in the playoffs.

 492.
Teams led by Budenholzer reached the playoffs in nine out of 10 seasons, made it to at least the second round six times, made the conference finals three times and made it to the NBA Finals once.

 493.
Budenholzer, 54, was the head coach for the Atlanta Hawks from 2013-18 and the Bucks coach from 2018-23 after working under San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich for 17 years (1996-2013), where he won four NBA titles (1999, 2003, ’05, ’07) as an assistant coach.

 494.
Notably, Ham was an assistant coach under Budenholzer with the Hawks and Bucks from 2013-22.

 495.
Ty Lue, Clippers head coach

 496.
It’s unclear if Lue will be available for the Lakers.

 497.
Especially with ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reporting on Friday that the Clippers are planning to pursue a contract extension with Lue, whose final year of his current contract is for the 2025-2026 season.

 498.
But If Lue somehow becomes available or doesn’t reach an extension with the Clippers, the Lakers would be expected to have interest in the 47-year-old.

 499.
Lue notably won an NBA title as the Cleveland Cavaliers’ head coach in 2016 – a team starring LeBron James. Those Lue-led Cavaliers teams also reached the NBA Finals in ’17 and ’18 before falling to the Warriors. The Lue-led Clippers also reached the Western Conference finals in 2021.

 500.
Lue has a 312-217 regular-season record as a head coach and a 54-36 record in the playoffs going into the Clippers’ Game 6 matchup against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night. Lue-led teams have made the playoffs in six of seven full seasons he’s coached and had a winning record all seven seasons.

 501.
He won two NBA titles with the Lakers as a player in 2000 and ’01.

 502.
Notably, Lue was the frontrunner for the Lakers’ 2019 offseason coaching search, with Frank Vogel eventually taking the job after Lue turned down the Lakers’ offer at the time according to ESPN. Lue has also been an assistant coach for the Boston Celtics (2011-13), Clippers (2013-14, 2019-2020) and Cavaliers (2014-15).

 503.
Charles Lee, Boston Celtics assistant coach

 504.
Lee, who The Athletic reported is an option for the Lakers’ coaching job, has been an assistant coach in the NBA for a decade.

 505.
He was an assistant on Budenholzer’s staff in Atlanta (2014-18) and Milwaukee (2018-23) before joining the Celtics last offseason as Joe Mazzulla’s lead assistant.

 552.
Lee was also the lead assistant under Budenholzer during his final season with the Bucks (2022-23).

 553.
Like Adelman, Lee has been part of multiple recent interview cycles for head-coaching positions, including the Hornets’ current opening and the Detroit Pistons’ and Toronto Raptors’ openings last offseason, according to ESPN.

 554.
JJ Redick, ESPN analyst/broadcaster

 555.
Redick, who played in the NBA for 15 seasons and retired in 2021, doesn’t have any professional coaching experience.

 556.
But he’s been interviewed for multiple head-coaching vacancies recently: the Raptors’ last offseason and the Hornets this spring.

 557.
Redick became an analyst/broadcaster for ESPN immediately after retirement and has hosted a podcast since 2016, including, “The Old Man and the Three” which is part of the ThreeFourTwo Productions company he co-founded.

 558.
Notably, Reddick has also been co-hosting a podcast, “Mind the Game” with James since March.

 577.
The Sand Bar, located a stone’s throw from the sand, features a 2,100-square-foot patio with 100 seats, which offers full-service dining. Counter service is also available for to-go meals.

 578.
Menu highlights include such starters as grilled esquites, Caesar salad and coctel de camarones. Heartier fare like sandwiches (brisket, sausage and turkey breast) and thin-crust pizzas (cheese, vegetable and pepperoni) also make appearances. And a coconut tres leches cake ($6) and churros funnel cake ($10) round out the dessert menu. The lil’ surfers menu offers the wee ones a choice of a burger ($10), chicken tenders ($10) or a turkey sandwich ($12).

 628.
“The Cabo Wabo brand was born on the beaches of Cabo San Lucas, so it only seems fitting to have it return to its roots with this new oceanfront extension,” said Sammy Hagar in a written statement. “As an Orange County resident, I have enjoyed many sun-filled days and magical sunsets on Huntington Beach, and adding great food, cocktails and music completes the experience.”

 650.
Russell Taylor, a Ladera Ranch entrepreneur, testified against a former OC police chief.

 651.

A Ladera Ranch entrepreneur who teamed up with a former Orange County police chief and four Inland Empire-based members of an extremist group to travel to the U.S. Capitol during the Jan. 6 insurrection was sentenced Friday, May 3 to three years of probation, including six months of home detention.

 652.
Russell Taylor previously accepted a plea deal in which he admitted to conspiring to obstruct an official proceeding and testified against Alan Hostetter, a former La Habra police chief-turned yoga instructor and conservative activist who became the most high-profile person with Orange County ties to be convicted for taking part in the overrunning of the U.S. Capitol.

 653.
Federal prosecutors had sought a much harsher four-year, four-month prison sentence for Taylor. They described him as a leader among those protesting the 2020 election results in the run-up to Jan. 6.

 654.
“The court has aptly explained that ‘(i)n any angry mob, there are leaders and there are followers,’” prosecutors wrote in a trial brief. “On January 6 — and just as importantly, in the weeks leading up to January 6 — Taylor was a leader.”

 655.
But the government also acknowledged that Taylor’s assistance to prosecutors was significant, particularly as a trial witness against Hostetter. That cooperation ultimately led U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth to hand down the lighter sentence requested by the defense.

 656.
Taylor’s attorney, Dyke Huish, noted in his own sentencing memo that Taylor after his arrest took full, honest responsibility for his role during the Capitol riot, has cooperated extensively with the government and “has not been involved in any activities that further the false narratives presented by far too many people and organizations” regarding the Jan. 6 insurrection.

 657.
“Some defendants have continued to call January 6th a false flag, some go to trial and then later claim remorse, some have claimed to accept responsibility only to turn back to their vomit after they were stanched and some have truly accepted their proper part and a sought rehabilitation,” Huish wrote. “but scant few have done what Mr. Taylor has and maintained their remorseful actions for over 3 1/4 years.”

 658.
Prosecutors alleged that Taylor helped organize a group of “fighters” to travel to Washington D.C. on Jan. 6, when thousands of pro-Trump supporters breached Congress in a violent but failed attempt to prevent the certification of President Joe Biden’s electoral victory.

 659.
Taylor and Hostetter gained public attention for organizing local anti-mask rallies in the midst of the pandemic. The two men — who had deep ties to Orange County’s conservative protest circles — then turned their attention to Trump’s disproven claims of the 2020 election being stolen due to voter fraud.

 660.
Spurred by a tweet in which Trump wrote “Big protest in D.C. on January 6th. Be there, will be wild!,” Taylor and Hostetter decided to travel to the Capitol. Taylor, in chat messages leading up to Jan. 6, wrote about organizing “a group of fighters to have each other’s backs and ensure that no one will trample our rights,” adding that “I personally want to be on the front steps and be one of the first ones to breach the doors!” at the Capitol.

 661.
The day before the Capitol breach, Taylor told a pro-Trump crowd during a speech in front of the U.S. Supreme Court that “We will fight and we will bleed before we allow our freedom to be taken from us.” Later that day, he posted a photo captioned, “Now getting ready for tomorrow,” in which a variety of “gear” was displayed on a bed, including two hatchets, a stun baton and a knife.

 662.
Outfitted with a black plate-carrier vest with a knife in the pocket and a backpack containing a hatchet and stun baton, Taylor joined Hostetter and the crowd that marched from a Trump speech down Pennsylvania Avenue and past police barricades and a line of officers that was attempting to block entry into a restricted part of the Capitol grounds.

 663.
Prosecutors described Taylor as among the initial group of rioters who clashed with officers. At one point he paused during the chaos to film a selfie video in which he shouted, “Move forward Americans!” to the rioters. Hours after the breach of the Capitol, Taylor posted a chat message saying, “I was pushing through traitors all day. WE STORMED THE CAPITOL! Freedom was fully demonstrated today!”

 664.
Asked by someone else what would happen next, Taylor replied “Insurrection!”

 665.
Hostetter — who acted as his own attorney and publicly turned on Taylor and other former allies after his arrest — blamed Taylor for their shared legal peril, claiming Taylor was “the one primarily engaged in making extreme comments and taking extreme actions at the U.S. Capitol.”

 666.
See also: List: Southern California residents accused or convicted in the Capitol insurrection

 667.
Huish, Taylor’s attorney, told the judge that Taylor was not a politically active man prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, and had no real involvement in protests prior to the pandemic restrictions implemented by California leaders. He met Hostetter at “beach church” meetings where such restrictions were often discussed. Since returning from Jan. 6, Taylor has distanced himself from Hostetter and from political activism, the defense attorney added.

 668.
“It would be unfair to say that all his political beliefs have shifted, they have not,” Huish wrote. “He still has a conservative based conviction of the “Shining City on the Hill” view of America. But he does not believe that one should cross the lines that were crossed on January 6th. This type of action runs the risk of dimming the light, even for a moment, on what is still the greatest beacon of hope in human history.”

 669.
Hostetter was convicted for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection and was sentenced last year to 11 years and three months in federal prison.

 670.
The four Inland Empire Three Percenters militia members who were charged alongside Taylor and Hostetter were also convicted, and sentenced to shorter stints behind bars.

 733.
Washington says players like Logan O’Hoppe and Jo Adell haven’t shown they can maintain the same approach when put into prime spots in the lineup, so he selects Calhoun to hit fourth in his Angels debut.

 734.

CLEVELAND — Journeyman Willie Calhoun found himself hitting in the cleanup spot in his first game with the Angels on Friday.

 735.
“I took some names and put them in a hat and shook them up and he came out fourth,” Manager Ron Washington said.

 736.
After the assembled media chuckled, Washington added: “Seriously. You think I’m joking.”

 737.
Washington went on to explain that he actually wrote some names on pieces of paper and threw them on his bed. He also had Jo Adell and Logan O’Hoppe in the mix.

 738.
Those players have each shown some power in the major leagues and gotten off to solid starts this season, but Washington said he really didn’t want to give either of them the responsibility of hitting fourth.

 739.
“They’re too young,” Washington said. “I tried putting Adell in the top of the lineup and it lasted a day. I tried putting (Zach) Neto in the top of the lineup and it lasted two days. I’m not going to take O’Hoppe and put him in the fourth hole. I’ll hit him fifth or sixth, but for some reason when you put them in one of those spots, they think they’ve got to be special and they don’t. They really don’t. They’ve just got to be who they are. If you can give us base hits there, I’ll take it. You can give us doubles there, I’ll take it. I’m not looking for home runs because I don’t have that kind of team.”

 740.
Given all that, what if Washington had picked Adell or O’Hoppe off the bed?

 741.
“I’m glad I picked Calhoun, because if I would have picked up one of the kids, I would have changed my mind,” Washington said. “So it was meant to be.”

 742.
Calhoun, 29, was set to make his Angels debut after playing for the Texas Rangers, San Francisco Giants and New York Yankees. He was hitting .268 with a .706 OPS at Triple-A when he got the call. He was hitting .316 with a .792 OPS in his last 14 games.

 743.
“I started off a little slow but then started picking things up the last two-and-a-half weeks,” he said. “I found a little something with my swing, so I’m just going to continue to do that, and carry it here.”

 744.
As for batting cleanup, Calhoun said it doesn’t make a difference to him, which is exactly why Washington put him there.

 745.
“Where you hit in the lineup doesn’t matter,” Calhoun said. “I feel like you get pitched the same way if you hit first, fourth or ninth.”

 746.
Washington also moved Luis Rengifo in the No. 2 spot, because he apparently also has that attitude.

 747.
“He just goes and has his at-bat,” Washington said. “He’s not about trying to do anything special but what he does. I certainly hope he’s able to run with it.”

 748.
Rengifo came into the weekend hitting .326 with an .841 OPS.

 749.
WHAT ABOUT DRURY?

 750.
Infielder Brandon Drury, who also could have been a choice to hit cleanup, was not in the lineup for the second straight game because of neck and head issues. He’s officially listed as being out with a migraine, but Drury said that he’s felt some stiffness in his neck ever since a diving play on Tuesday.

 751.
Drury went through a full workout on Friday, and he could return to the lineup as soon as Saturday.

 752.
NOTES

 753.
Three-time American League MVP Mike Trout underwent a successful partial medial meniscectomy on Friday, according to the Angels’ medical report. The Angels would not provide any timeline, but a typical recover for that type of procedure would be four to six weeks. …

 835.

Father Gregory Boyle, founder of Homeboy Industries — the largest gang intervention and re-entry program in the world — was honored by President Joe Biden with the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, on Friday, May 3.
