45.
They offer mostly hazy responses after a disappointing season that included a coaching change and another first-round playoff loss to Edmonton. Blake says they will not buy out the contract of high-priced center Pierre-Luc Dubois.

 46.

EL SEGUNDO — The Kings’ brain trust addressed the media on Monday, although some of their statements about the disappointing season that just concluded seemed difficult to reconcile with the views of the public and, to some degree, their own players.

 47.
The Kings, a team that in seven campaigns under General Manager Rob Blake and team president Luc Robitaille has won fewer postseason games than all but three of the NHL’s 31 other franchises, endured rather than experienced this past season from December onward.

 48.
This duo of former on-ice stars whose numbers hang in the rafters of Crypto.com Arena offered mostly hazy responses that indicated there was an excellent chance that, in addition to their own controversial returns, spectators would see more of the same going forward.

 49.
“We hear our fans loud and clear right now. We know they’re disappointed. We know they want to get to the next level,” Robitaille said. “It’s not about winning one series or beating one team, it’s about getting us so that we can win that last game of the season, and that’s the Stanley Cup.”

 50.
Yet these Kings have not won even one series and have failed to beat one team, the Edmonton Oilers, three years in a row. That left them light-years from the Stanley Cup and their position has become further distanced from that prize across three playoff cameos that got shorter and shorter. Their only prior playoff appearance under Blake was in his first season as GM, a sweep by the Vegas Golden Knights in that franchise’s inaugural season.

 51.
Robitaille offered the platitude that “every team that gets in the playoffs has a chance to win.”

 52.
However, since Blake and Robitaille ascended to power, the Kings have a .273 win percentage in the postseason, worse than every other franchise except the Ducks (who were 0-4 in their lone appearance, a year after reaching the conference finals). They also have the fourth-worst offense statistically and the second-worst defense across those seven postseasons.

 53.
The NHL’s newest organization, the Seattle Kraken, has spent just three seasons in the league but in one spring it won more games and series than the Kings have under Blake and Robitaille in seven years.

 54.
Unfavorable comparisons to the rest of the league and its top outfits in particular could fill an encyclopedia, yet Robitaille compared the Kings’ five-game loss to Edmonton this year to the plight of the Carolina Hurricanes last season.

 55.
Carolina was swept out of the conference finals (not the first round) by way of four one-goal losses that included five overtime periods last season. The Kings were blown out in two games, shut out in another and earned their sole victory in overtime, ultimately blowing two leads and chasing the game that saw them eliminated. Still, Robitaille claimed the games they lost were “right there.”

 56.
Blake also said the he thought the team made “progress” during the regular season, insisting it simply did not carry over to the playoffs.

 57.
“We still believe this group has made progress in a lot of different areas, we have to find a way to get that to translate into the playoffs,” he said, later reiterating that the Kings were “making progress, [but] the progress is not showing in the playoffs.”

 58.
Yet the Kings performed very poorly against the Western Conference’s top teams and playoff clubs in general, winning just eight of 23 games against the other seven postseason qualifiers during the regular season.

 59.
They also changed coaches in February, amid a stretch that saw them go from the NHL’s most productive offense to its seventh-least potent one from Dec. 5 onward.

 60.
Not only did their game snowball into an avalanche in January, but their goaltending struggled, with 36-year-old Cam Talbot’s game falling off a cliff despite having been named an All-Star. He recovered, but struggled again in the postseason. In both cases, backup David Rittich ameliorated a dire situation but hardly provided a concrete answer, as the goalies played musical nets in both the regular season and playoffs – Talbot lost his cage to Rittich and regained it, only to retrocede it after Game 3 against Edmonton.

 61.
The Kings’ power play, which interim coach Jim Hiller continued to run after he was promoted, took one step back from last season (and when it improved, 5-on-5 scoring declined) during the year and did not score a single goal in the playoffs, much as the Kings’ penalty kill, which rebounded to rank second during the season, was exposed brutally during the spring.

 62.
Yet both last week’s player interviews and Monday’s executive availability indicated that there was a good chance the Kings could run it back in goal and overall. Neither Robitaille nor Blake said firmly that Hiller would be the coach next season but he appeared to be the leading candidate (more on that in “a couple weeks,” Blake said).

 63.
Significant personnel changes might be challenging because of salary cap missteps, especially given that Blake said the Kings had no intention of buying out underwhelming, overpaid pivot Pierre-Luc Dubois.

 64.
Dubois is the latest unwieldy roadblock placed in the Kings’ path by Blake, carrying on the ignominious tradition of Ilya Kovalchuk and Cal Petersen. The former was paid to go away, the latter was paid to be taken away and Dubois, now, it appears, will continue to be paid handsomely to be in the way.

 65.
Dubois, who was signed to an 8-year, $68 million contract after being acquired in a trade with Winnipeg last summer, had 40 points in 82 regular-season games and one goal and 20 penalty minutes in five playoff games.

 66.
“We need to make him better,” Blake said. “He’s had a consistent performance over his career so far and deviated from that this year. It’s up to us to help him become more productive to us.”

 67.
The cap will increase significantly for the first time since 2019, but that bump has effectively been pre-spent in dead-cap dollars (salary retention, performance bonuses and a fractional lingering penalty from the Dean Lombardi era). Edmonton was among the front offices that did something similar, but the Oilers are still playing in the playoffs and looking to add to the four series they’ve won while the Kings have been stuck in first gear.

 68.
The impression in the room Monday among reporters present was all but unanimous, such to the point that one asked Blake point blank if fans were being told that they would see more of the same next season from personnel and tactical standpoints.

 69.
“Not necessarily, I think we’re talking a little bit about systematic changes and different things that may be incorporated,” Blake responded. “We have to understand why the game didn’t translate into the playoffs.”

 70.
Two of the Kings’ most prominent offensive forces, Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala, expressed unequivocal support of a systemic change on the forecheck from the 1-3-1 to a 1-2-2 or 2-1-2 setup, urging a more open approach systemically.

 117.
While Blake said “I think we have to have a deep discussion on that, for sure,” he also pointed to the team’s miserly goals-against average, the third-lowest in the league, and said, “We don’t want to deviate too far from that.”

 118.
Blake gave no firm updates on unrestricted free agents-to-be, like Matt Roy and Viktor Arvidsson, nor on any of the team’s restricted free agents. He did say that pending restricted free agent Quinton Byfield would be the team’s focus, and that that prioritization was based on his importance to the club rather than any particular parameter or circumstance.

 119.
The Kings regressed in the standings and some key areas this year, and failed to sustain their limited gains against top competition nor in the most meaningful parts of the campaign. While Blake and Robitaille remained secure, there has been no shortage of despondence, dismay and displeasure among the fan base.

 120.
“It’s the same as the way players feel, there’s disappointment, frustration, difficult and anger,” Blake said. “I’m sure they feel it just like the players and we do.”

 225.
Andy Pages’ emergence and Jason Heyward’s nearing return from a back injury could leave Outman as the odd man out in the Dodgers’ outfield.

 226.

LOS ANGELES — The clock might be ticking on James Outman.

 227.
The second-year center fielder entered Monday’s game batting .165 with an OPS of just .559. It hasn’t been getting better recently. He was 3 for his past 28 through Sunday with seven strikeouts in his past 12 at-bats.

 228.
With the emergence of Andy Pages, Outman has been out of the lineup more frequently against left-handed starting pitching. Monday, he was dropped to ninth in the batting order.

 229.
“I just think that James is really scuffling,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of the move. “He’s in between and I think that Gavin (Lux) is taking much better at-bats and I like him behind Andy.”

 230.
Roberts said Outman seems to be struggling with “uncertainty with his mechanics, uncertainty with his approach, and when you’re in that spot, it’s tough to hit.”

 231.
Outman showed some certainty in his first at-bat Monday, driving a two-run home run 437 feet to center field. It was his first home run since April 9 in Minnesota.

 232.
As a rookie, Outman had some deep slumps as well. He hit .165 in May with strikeouts in nearly half of his at-bats (34 for 79). But that followed a red-hot April (a .292 average with seven home runs and a .991 OPS) and was washed away later by another hot month in July (.309 with a .904 OPS).

 233.
He has yet to have a hot streak even approaching those this season.

 234.
“I think that to get hot, you have to have some clarity and feel good about your swing and I don’t think he has been there yet,” Roberts said. “Hopefully today when he’s taking his at-bats, I see that he feels confident and he feels convicted on his mechanics and his approach and goes out there and competes.”

 235.
If there aren’t signs of improvement soon, Outman could find himself a candidate for demotion to Triple-A when Jason Heyward returns from the injured list. Pages doesn’t appear to be going anywhere.

 236.
“If he continues to play like this, it’s hard to take him out of the lineup,” Roberts said of Pages, who has started nine games in center field and has hit .319 with a .903 OPS in his first 17 games since being promoted from Triple-A.

 237.
“We have to win baseball games and giving guys leashes and opportunities is one thing, but at the end of the day, if you’re playing the way he’s playing on both sides of the baseball, he’s earning the right to play.”

 238.
Roberts said demoting Outman to Triple-A to give him a chance to straighten things out without the pressure of performing at the major league level isn’t being discussed – “not right now,” he said. But he acknowledged that “a lot of it – or some of it – is contingent on Jason and his progression” in his return from a lower back strain.

 239.
“Right now for me, it’s go out there and try to work through some things, clear your mind and help us win a game,” Roberts said. “I’m not going to outwardly say that we’re having those conversations because we aren’t, actually. But I just want him to hopefully have some clarity and start fresh today and take good at-bats.”

 240.
KELLY OUT

 241.
The Dodgers placed right-hander Joe Kelly on the IL on Monday with a right posterior shoulder strain. That cleared a roster spot for Walker Buehler to be activated from the IL and make his first major league start since June 10, 2022.

 242.
Kelly, 35, has a 4.73 ERA over 15 appearances this season, most recently striking out the only batter he faced in Sunday’s victory over the Atlanta Braves.

 243.
The veteran right-hander joins fellow relievers Evan Phillips, Ryan Brasier, Brusdar Graterol and Kyle Hurt on the IL.

 244.
HEYWARD PROGRESS

 245.
Heyward has increased his workouts over the past few days and is “really close” to going out on a minor-league injury rehabilitation assignment, according to Roberts.

 292.
Heyward took batting practice on the field for the first time Saturday and hit with the team again before Monday’s game. He also ran the curve of the infield during his pre-game workout and has been taking simulated at-bats against the Dodgers’ high-tech Trajekt Arc pitching machine.

 293.
“He’s close (to a rehab assignment),” Roberts said. “We don’t have it planned out, but he’s getting there. I don’t see it happening during this homestand. But after the off day (Thursday) it might be a conversation.”

 402.
PITTSBURGH — Angels pitchers have very little margin for error these days, and certainly not enough to overcome it when one bad inning includes a grand slam.

 403.
Tyler Anderson gave up a third-inning grand slam to Edward Olivares and that was all the Pittsburgh Pirates needed to beat the Angels, 4-1, on Monday night.

 404.
Anderson didn’t give up anything else in 6⅓ innings, which was little consolation on a night when the Angels (12-23) dropped a season-worst 11 games under .500.

 405.
“We’re in a tough stretch right now,” Anderson said. “It seems like when we do make a mistake like tonight, you think you might get away with that. Might get a foul ball or something. When things are going really well, it seems like when you make a mistake or mental mistake like that, you kind of get away with a little bit.

 406.
“It just seems like for all of us, we’re just in a bad stretch, so that one you make really hurts you. And it’s happened to all of us. It’s not always that way. It’s just one of those stretches right now. If we keep doing our job, we’ll be OK.”

 407.
Manager Ron Washington lauded the performance of Anderson, despite the homer. He said that over the last seven games the Angels’ starters have been better. They have a 4.95 ERA in that span, but the starters have made it past the fifth inning in every game, and through the sixth four times.

 408.
“Our starting pitching is starting to come around,” Washington said. “Now we have to do something offensively to support them. And we have to stop taking ourselves out of innings.”

 409.
Washington was referring to one forgettable moment in the top of the fourth, just after Anderson gave up the grand slam to put the Angels in a 4-0 hole.

 410.
Nolan Schanuel was at first base when Mickey Moniak hit a ball to the fence in left-center. Third base coach Eric Young Sr. waved Schanuel home. Schanuel went into the plate standing up and he was tagged out.

 411.
The rule of thumb is that you should never make the first out at home, so a runner shouldn’t be sent unless he’s going to make it easily. Down by four runs at the time, it was an especially poor moment to scuttle a potential big inning before it even started.

 412.
“If we try to score that run right there, we got to be 100% that he can cross the plate,” Washington said. “We had two runners in scoring position with the best part of the lineup we have coming up.”

 413.
Although Young was sending Schanuel, the rookie said the mistake was his, especially since he didn’t slide.

 414.
“One hundred percent my mistake,” Schanuel said. “Baseball 101. Kind of just a mess up moment.”

 415.
Matt Thaiss was thrown out at the plate on Sunday in Cleveland, but that was a more reasonable gamble because there were two outs.

 416.
The reason the Angels are pushing the envelope so much on the bases is that they don’t have much power in their lineup, which puts more pressure on their pitchers.

 417.
Anderson had trouble in two innings, the second and third. He escaped a jam in the second with a strikeout, but in the third he couldn’t.

 418.
Anderson walked leadoff man Andrew McCutchen and No. 3 hitter Ke’Bryan Hayes, around a Bryan Reynolds double.

 419.
After a pop-out, Olivares came to the plate.

 420.
Anderson threw him a first-pitch cutter and it cut right back into the barrel of Olivares’ bat, as he ripped it 424 feet and over the left field fence.

 421.
“Obviously, the walks kill,” Anderson said. “I felt like, man, some of them were really close pitches too. Then I feel like I kind of started guiding stuff a little bit. You feel like you make a really good pitch right where you want to, and you get balled and you think ‘Shoot maybe I need to bring it up a little bit,’ so I threw some maybe a little passive after that, which I don’t like to do.”

 468.
Anderson added that Olivares is an aggressive hitter, who swung at the first pitch in all three of their meetings, so he should have not have given him anything so close.

 469.
Just like that, Anderson gave up more than he had in any of his previous six starts in what was shaping up to be a bounce-back season.

 470.
Anderson responded to the grand slam by retiring the next 10 hitters, which at least gave the Angels some time to catch up, but all they could manage was Zach Neto’s third homer of the season.

 471.
Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller threw a complete game. While the Angels have recently lamented their ability to hit some unspectacular pitchers – like Carlos Carrasco and Ben Lively over the weekend in Cleveland – they did acknowledge that this time some of their struggles were because of Keller.

 472.
“He was on today,” Schanuel said. “Definitely came with his stuff. He was throwing everything for strikes and definitely controlling the zone.”

 493.
.Judge Ebrahim Baytieh is at the center of a special hearing during retrial proceedings in a case stemming from a 1988 Sunset Beach murder.

 494.

A San Diego County judge has set a June 10 special hearing for a former high-ranking Orange County prosecutor, now a judge, to testify about his alleged misconduct in a 2010 murder case.

 495.
Orange County Superior Court Judge Ebrahim Baytieh, the original prosecutor in the case, has been subpoenaed to take the witness stand on allegations that he withheld evidence that may have been beneficial to the defense.

 496.
Baytieh’s testimony will be part of an ongoing hearing on whether defendant Paul Gentile Smith can receive fair treatment in a retrial of charges that he fatally stabbed his boyhood friend and sometimes marijuana dealer in Sunset Beach in 1988.

 497.
The case was moved to San Diego County, where it is being heard by Judge Daniel Goldstein, because of Baytieh’s position as a judge in Orange County.

 498.
Smith’s conviction was overturned in 2021 amid allegations that evidence was withheld that his civil rights were violated through the use of jailhouse informants. Three informants were used to pry incriminating evidence from Smith, but only one informant was disclosed to the defense.

 499.
Smith’s attorney, Orange County Assistant Public Defender Scott Sanders, alleges Baytieh conspired to hide evidence from the defense and bury the routine use of jailhouse informants on incarcerated defendants who had been charged — violating their right to counsel.

 500.
Sanders is demanding that all charges be dismissed against Smith for alleged “outrageous government conduct.”

 501.
Orange County’s secret use of jailhouse informants led to one of the largest criminal justice scandals in the United States and resulted in a blistering rebuke in 2022 by the Department of Justice.

 502.
During testimony Monday, May 6, at the San Diego hearing, two Orange County sheriff’s officials who worked with jail informants in the Smith case testified they did not realize they were breaking the law.

 503.
According to the 1964 case, Massiah v. United States, defendants who have been formally charged cannot be further interrogated by law enforcement or informants working with police.

 504.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Michael Padilla and retired Lt. Roger Guevara testified they didn’t fully know the law when Padilla gave three informants the same dayroom privileges as Smith so they could extract information from him, and when Guevara introduced one of the informants to two investigators working the Smith case.

 505.
Guevara described the rules pertaining to the use of informants as “foggy to me.”

 539.
From Sherman Oaks to Studio City, here's a breakdown of all of the locations where the cast of Bravo's "The Valley" dines during season 1.

 540.

Bravo’s “The Valley” follows a group of friends navigating adulthood in a new chapter of life, parenthood. The reality show is a spinoff of the series “Vanderpump Rules,” that jumped into a new level of fame and pop culture status last March.

 541.
If you aren’t familiar, #Scandoval was the talk of the town last year after news broke that cast member Tom Sandoval had been cheating on his partner of 9 years, Ariana Maddox, with fellow cast member Rachel Levis. With both Bravo fans and the internet not able to get enough of the series, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to expand the Bravo-verse with a new series.

 542.
Related: ‘Vanderpump Rules’ spinoff brings a dose of reality TV to the San Fernando Valley

 543.
“The Valley” brings back two original Pump Rules cast members, Kristen Doute and Jax Taylor, as well as Taylor’s wife Brittany Cartwright who joined the show in later seasons. All three worked as servers and bartenders at former “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star Lisa Vanderpump’s West Hollywood restaurant, SUR.

 544.
A lot has changed in the years since we last saw this trio on our screens. For one, they’ve stepped away from the glitz and glam of West Hollywood to reside in the San Fernando Valley. Another major change is the new additions to their families. Taylor and Cartwright have a son together, where as Doute shares she’s trying to get pregnant with her boyfriend Luke Broderick, who is also a member of the Valley cast.

 545.
Entering this next chapter of life means expanding their friend circle beyond their former SUR coworkers. The Valley cast includes three couples; Danny and Nia Booko, Jesse and Michelle Lally; Jason and Janet Caperna; as well as friends Zack Wickham and former the Bachelor contestant Jasmine Goode.

 546.
Similar to Vanderpump Rules and other Bravo shows, The Valley makes a point to make the surrounding cities its backdrop and utilize various restaurants and bars where the cast meets up to discuss the latest gossip.

 547.
Here are some of the restaurants seen throughout the first season of the series.

 548.

 551.
Cast-owned Restaurants:

 552.
Jax’s Studio City

 553.
12514 Ventura Blvd, Studio City, CA 91604

 554.
The bar is owned by Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright. The process of opening the bar is documented during the season.

 555.
The bar is connected to Rocco’s Tavern and offers a similar menu, but one noticeable addition to Jax’s that many Pump Rules fans will recognize is Mamaw’s Beer Cheese. The indoor area of the bar feels like a glammed up dive bar where they host weekly karaoke nights. Outside feels like a sports bar surround by TVs that most would use to watch the game, but also make for a fun space for fans to watch their favorite Bravo shows.

 642.

Villa Park beat Huntington Beach in a dramatic game in the CIF Southern Section baseball playoffs last year.

 643.
The Spartans had no runs and one hit through six innings. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, Villa Park’s Nathaniel Pone hit a fly ball over the head of Huntington Beach’s left fielder to drive in the winning run for a 2-1 victory.

 644.
The teams meet again Tuesday. Same round, same place, same division.

 645.
Huntington Beach (21-8) plays at Villa Park(18-11) in a Division 1 second-round game at Villa Park High.

 646.
Pone graduated last spring, and so did his teammate who scored the winning run, Jake Starr.

 648.
But plenty of players who were in last season’s game are still around, including Villa Park senior pitcher/infielder Justin Tims who was All-Crestview League last year.

 649.
Tims pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts in a playoff win Friday over Bishop Amat.

 650.
Huntington Beach senior pitcher Nathan Aceves and senior designated hitter Linkin Garcia were All-Surf League first team last season.

 651.
So these teams have some recent playoff history. Huntington Beach hopes history is not repeated Tuesday.

 652.
ANOTHER REMATCH

 653.
There is a more recent rematch than Huntington Beach-Villa Park that will take place in the Division 1 playoffs Tuesday.

 654.
Mater Dei (17-12) is home against Corona (26-3) in a second-round game.

 655.
The Monarchs beat Corona 5-3 in the championship game of the Boras Classic South tournament last month.

 656.
Corona is the No. 1 seed in Division 1and is ranked No. 1 in the state by Prep Baseball California and No. 2 in the nation by MaxPreps.

 657.
CRESTVIEW LEAGUE

 658.
Three of the Crestview League’s four teams won their first-round playoff games.

 659.
Villa Park, which shared the league championship with El Modena and Foothill, beat Bishop Amat 6-1 in Division 1. Foothill won its Division 1 first-found game, 7-5 over South Hills. El Modena advanced in Division 3 with a 9-3 win over Dana Hills.

 660.
The Crestview team that did not get past the first round was El Dorado, the league’s fourth-place team. El Dorado played Corona to a scoreless tie through six innings. Corona’s Billy Carlson hit a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat the Golden Hawks 1-0.

 661.
Foothill (21-8) plays at home in the second round Tuesday against La Mirada (22-6). El Modena (19-8-1) is at South Torrance (16-13) for a second-round game Tuesday.

 662.
NOTES

 732.
The Ducks have never had the first overall pick, though they’ve selected second three times (including last year) and in the top five on eight occasions in franchise history. They have the third-best odds (11.5%) this year.

 733.

The NHL draft lottery will be held on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. PT and, for the sixth straight season, the Ducks will be awaiting the draw with bated breath.

 734.
Of the 16 teams in the lottery, they have the third-best odds (11.5%) of obtaining the No. 1 overall selection in the June 28-29 NHL entry draft. This was the Ducks’ sixth consecutive campaign missing the playoffs and they last won both a postseason game and series in 2017, when they reached the Western Conference finals. They are the only team in the NHL without a postseason victory of any kind since 2018.

 735.
The Ducks have never picked first overall, though they’ve selected second three times and in the top five overall on eight occasions in franchise history.

 736.
Last year, they had the worst point total in the NHL and, correspondingly, the best odds at the No. 1 pick, unanimously considered to be generational talent Connor Bedard. The Chicago Blackhawks ended up with the top spot (and Bedard), and the Ducks snagged Swedish center Leo Carlsson at No. 2.

 737.
There were faint echoes of the Ducks’ previous consolation prize, winger Bobby Ryan. He was selected behind three-time Stanley Cup champion Sidney Crosby, though Ryan turned into a top-six winger and Carlsson’s future at center appeared even brighter than that in his first NHL season.

 738.
This year, should the Ducks strike it rich, there’s a consensus No. 1 pick, and then some debate as to who could go next. The Ducks could select anywhere in the top five, depending on which teams win the drawings for the first and second picks.

 739.
With that, here is a quick glance of whom they might eye with those selections.

 740.
No. 1: Macklin Celebrini, forward, Boston University

 741.
Celebrini enters the draft as the consensus No. 1 selection and while he might not have the cachet that Bedard or Crosby had, he’s still more exciting than even some recent consensus No. 1s, like Alexis Lafreniere. Celebrini won the NCAA scoring title with a staggering 64 points in 38 games. He also captured the Hobey Baker Award as the nation’s best collegiate player, even as a freshman, edging out his Beanpot rival and the Ducks’ reigning top prospect, Boston College sophomore Cutter Gauthier.

 742.
No. 2: Artyom Levshunov, right defenseman, Michigan State

 743.
This Belarussian import has taken off on North American ice, progressing through his development at a breakneck pace. Not only is he a very well-rounded two-way defenseman with few discernible holes in his game, he’s one who plays with tremendous energy and a voracious appetite for the puck. He’s also a right-handed shot who would deepen a stable that already includes Tristan Luneau and Noah Warren.

 744.
No. 3: Zayne Parekh, right defenseman, Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

 745.
Parekh is also a right-handed shot but his game skews heavily toward offense. When the Ducks dealt Jamie Drysdale for an elite forward prospect, they created a void in terms of an elusive, creative and poised right blue-liner. In Parekh, they get a very agile if not blazing fast skater with a bottomless bag of offensive tricks that allowed him to score 96 points in 66 games last season, exceeding the totals of all three of the Ducks’ junior defensemen of the year from the prior campaign.

 792.
No. 4: Cayden Lindstrom, center, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL)

 793.
The Ducks are flush at center, such to the point that they’ve started evaluating relocations to the wing for at least two of their four top-10 picks in the middle. But Lindstrom is also the sort of imposing and athletic center who teams covet, in the mold of the Kings’ Quinton Byfield or Winnipeg’s Mark Scheifele. He has the size to protect the puck, the mobility to transport it and the skill to do something exciting with it.

 794.
No. 5: Cole Eiserman, Winger, Committed to Boston University

 795.
The Ducks sorely lacked finishing last season, something that stung them in a couple dozen close contests that became losses. Eiserman has been a goal-scoring machine at both levels of the U.S. development program, averaging more than a goal per game at the USHL and USNTDP levels. There are some polarizing elements to his game but like Montreal’s Cole Caufield he’s an American prospect who can flat out make rubber meet nylon.

 827.

Boeing’s CST-100 Starliner will have to wait at least another day for its first human spaceflight as teams scrubbed a Monday night launch attempt.

 828.
With just over two hours on the countdown clock before a planned 10:34 p.m. liftoff, an issue with an oxygen relief valve led to the call while NASA astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams were strapped into the spacecraft atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station’s Space Launch Complex 41 awaiting the start of the Crew Flight Test (CFT) mission to the International Space Station.

 829.
The problematic valve was located on the Centaur upper stage of the Atlas rocket. Ahead of the launch attempt, NASA had said a backup opportunity was available Tuesday night as well as Friday and Saturday, but that won’t be determined until after ULA investigates the problem.

 830.

 831.
The duo had donned their spacesuits, made the trip in the Boeing-themed Astrovan from Kennedy Space Center to the Cape and taken their seats in the capsule, but the hatch had not sealed when the scrub call was made.

 832.
The pair along with 750 pounds of supplies would be making about a 26 1/2-hour flight to the ISS where they would stay for eight days stay on board before a return flight home in mid-May that would have a primary landing site of White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico, but could also land elsewhere in the western United States.

 833.
“This is a test flight. That brings to bear all the things that the title implies,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Because it is a test flight, we give extra attention. They’re checking out a lot of the systems — the life support, the manual control, all of those things that you want to be checked out.

 834.
“That’s why we put two test pilots on board, and of course the resumes of Butch and Suni are extensive,” he said.

 873.
Both astronauts are retired Navy and have flown to space two times previous each, both on the space shuttle and on Russia Soyuz spacecraft with stays on board the ISS. Wilmore is the commander for this flight and joined NASA in 2000. Williams is pilot and joined in 1998.

 874.
“We have been through quite the process over the years,” said Wilmore on a media call last Wednesday. “It’s been really a thrilling process. I mean, to be two Navy trained test pilots and be into the process of this first flight, and all that goes into that and all the discovery that we’ve had over the years and working together with our Boeing counterparts, test after test, evaluation after evaluation. Every single day is different, and that’s been intriguing, and thrilling along the way.”

 875.
Williams and Wilmore had been targeting several liftoff dates in 2023 before hardware delays required fixes pushing the attempt into 2024.

 876.
“It almost feels unreal,” Williams said. “Like we’ve had a couple launch dates and we’ve been like, ‘OK, we’re ready to go,’ but now it’s like, heck five, five days… which means it is actually finally real, and I sort of have to pinch myself a little bit to understand we’re actually, we’re going.”

 877.
All teams signed off on the mission at last week’s Launch Readiness Review and the Atlas V was rolled to the launch pad on Saturday. Space Launch Delta 45’s weather squadron forecasts a 95% chance for good conditions, although NASA has backup opportunities on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday.

 878.
“The most exciting thing for me about the Launch Readiness Review was at the very end,” said NASA Commercial Crew Program manager Steve Stich. “We heard from Butch and Suni, and they talked about their excitement. And after everybody had polled go, Butch got on and wanted to say one thing to the team and he said he’s go for launch.”

 879.
NASA’s Commercial Crew Program awarded Boeing and SpaceX contracts back in 2014 to build spacecraft capable of flying its astronauts to and from the ISS.

 880.
Starliner is only the sixth ever U.S.-based spacecraft to fly with NASA astronauts following Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the space shuttle and SpaceX’s Crew Dragon.

 881.
It also marks a return of human launches from Cape Canaveral’s launch pads, which last saw a crewed flight in 1968 with the launch of Apollo 7. Every Apollo mission afterward as well as the space shuttle and Crew Dragon launches have come from nearby Kennedy Space Center.

 882.
It’s the first time an Atlas V will fly with humans as well, although earlier iterations of the Atlas rocket flew several human spaceflights in the early 1960s including John Glenn’s historic trip to space as the first American to each orbit in 1962. This also marks the 100th launch of an Atlas V rocket.

 883.
Starliner will also become the first U.S.-based capsule to make a land touchdown as Crew Dragon, Apollo, Gemini and Mercury all made water landings, as will the Artemis program’s Orion capsule that has yet to fly with humans. Russia’s Soyuz, though, features land touchdowns.

 884.
Dragon and Starliner are NASA’s solution to replace the retired Space Shuttle Program that last flew in 2011 and end its reliance on Soyuz that filled the gap as NASA’s only option for nearly nine years.

 885.
That’s when SpaceX was able to complete its crewed test flight in 2020. Elon Musk’s company has since flown its fleet of Crew Dragons 13 times carrying 50 humans to space, including the four members of Crew-8 who await the arrival of Starliner on board the ISS.

 886.
The CFT mission comes nearly two years since Starliner last flew on the Orbital Flight Test 2 (OFT-2), a successful trip to the ISS without a crew, just a mannequin named “Rosie the Rocketeer.”

 887.
The first human to ever venture into Starliner in space was actually NASA’s Bob Hines, a member of Crew-4 in 2022.

 888.
“Nobody stepped inside. I floated inside,” he said. “It was me. I got to open the hatch … We had agreed early on that as a new guy, this was a good project for me to kind of take on, and so I was the lead for when the Starliner mission was up there on space station.”

 889.
He is now part of the NASA’s joint test team for crews prepping for both SpaceX Dragon and Boeing Starliner, and has been working with the CFT crew leading up to this launch.

 890.
“I got to open the hatch and go in and kind of lead that mission,” he said. “It was pretty cool, and it’s almost coming full circle here being very involved in getting crew off the ground.”

 891.
Having flown up to the ISS on Dragon, he took note of the differences between the two capsules.

 892.
“One, it was very obvious that there are different philosophies in approaching human spaceflight, which is really neat to see as a test pilot,” he said. “A different cabin layout, a totally different capsule design, a different philosophy for operating the vehicle … So it was really neat and eye opening to see another solution.”

 893.
That mission was a do-over mission from the original uncrewed test flight, now referred to as OFT-1, that in 2019 saw myriad issues including not being able to dock with the ISS. But now nearly four years behind SpaceX, Boeing, which has spent more than $1.5 billion on Starliner’s development, looks to finally get its spacecraft certified to perform normal rotational missions to the ISS.

 894.
“It’s important that we’re making history. I feel that a lot as the Commercial Crew Program manager,” Stich said. “It was just four years ago we brought the Dragon spacecraft online and the Falcon 9 launch vehicle, and then here we are now four years later bringing another system online.”

 895.
Stich said the years of delay aren’t as important as making sure the flight is a safe one.

 896.
“We’ve been taking our time to go through everything methodically because it is a test flight, and we want it to go well,” he said. “I’m sure we’ll learn something on orbit and we’ll learn something during the flight but our team is checking, double checking everything and making sure we’re really ready to go.”

 897.
If all goes well with CFT, that first operational mission, dubbed Starliner-1, could fly with four astronauts to the ISS as early as next February and become the first of six Boeing missions that would share taxi duties with SpaceX to the station until the ISS is decommissioned after 2030.

 898.
“We have been striving in Commercial Crew to have two independent space transportation systems,” Stich said. “That’s been our goal since from Commercial Crew’s inception and we’re very close to reaching that goal.”
