63.
Optimizing your vitamin D levels may be a simple way to relieve painful menstruation, or dysmenorrhea, according to research published in the journal Nutrients.1 Vitamin D shows promise as it reduces both inflammation and prostaglandin levels2 — elevated prostaglandin levels may lead to more intense contractions of uterine muscles, a key contributor to menstrual pain.

 64.
While addressing other factors, like progesterone, is also important for menstrual pain relief, knowing your vitamin D level, and increasing it if necessary, is a straightforward intervention to be aware of.

 65.
Vitamin D Supplementation Relieved Painful Menstrual Cramps

 66.
To explore whether vitamin D can decrease pain in women with dysmenorrhea, researchers conducted a comprehensive review of existing studies, including randomized controlled trials up to December 30, 2023.

 67.
The studies focused on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on pain intensity and the need for additional pain relief. Overall, 11 studies involving 687 participants were analyzed. The results revealed a significant reduction in pain intensity among those receiving vitamin D compared to controls.

 68.
Further analysis showed that vitamin D supplementation effectively reduced pain associated with primary dysmenorrhea but had no significant effect on secondary dysmenorrhea. Primary dysmenorrhea is a common form of menstrual pain that’s directly related to the menstrual cycle.

 69.
Secondary dysmenorrhea refers to menstrual pain caused by an underlying reproductive system disorder, such as endometriosis, fibroids, adenomyosis, pelvic inflammatory disease or cervical stenosis. Separate research found, however, that vitamin D supplementation was useful for reducing endometriosis-related dysmenorrhea as well.3

 70.
“In the pooled analyses,” the researchers wrote, “we found that vitamin D supplementation significantly decreased the pain intensity of dysmenorrhea, and the cumulative power supports a ‘true’ treatment response.”4

 71.
A subgroup analysis also revealed that vitamin D supplementation reduced pain intensity in those with vitamin D deficiency. As for how vitamin D works to relieve painful menstruation, the researchers explained that vitamin D receptors are present in various reproductive organs, including the ovaries, uterus, placenta and pituitary gland, suggesting that vitamin D plays a significant role in reproductive health.5

 72.
Research indicates that vitamin D interacts with these receptors to suppress the expression of markers induced by inflammation and factors associated with uterine contraction in the smooth muscle cells of the uterus. Interestingly, a reduction in vitamin D levels has been noted during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle.6

 73.
This decrease may lead to an increase in inflammatory cytokines and prostaglandins, thereby intensifying the pain associated with dysmenorrhea. “Overall, through these mechanisms, vitamin D supplementation offers positive benefits in alleviating the pain severity of dysmenorrhea,” the scientists explained.7

 74.
Vitamin D Relieves Menstrual Pain in Adolescents

 75.
It’s estimated that 45% to 95% of women8 — and 80% of adolescents9 — suffer from dysmenorrhea. Painful menstrual cramps, which can occur in the lower abdomen or back during menstruation, are among the most common gynecological complaints among women and can significantly affect quality of life, including disrupting sleep and mood.

 76.
It’s also a common reason for missing school and work and brings with it a steep economic burden, costing $200 billion annually in the U.S.10 Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which inhibit prostaglandin synthesis, are often prescribed to treat menstrual pain, but they increase the risk of gastric ulcers and gastrointestinal bleeding.

 77.
Oral contraceptives may also be prescribed for treatment, despite little evidence that they’re effective for dysmenorrhea. Further, 50% of women stop using oral contraceptives for menstrual pain due to side effects,11 making vitamin D an attractive alternative.

 78.
A systematic review revealed that abnormal low vitamin D levels increased the severity of primary dysmenorrhea, while vitamin D and calcium supplements reduced the severity and decreased the need for pain-relievers.12

 79.
It’s important to remember that calcium, vitamin D3, magnesium and vitamin K2 must be properly balanced for optimal overall health. Your best and safest bet is to simply eat more calcium-, magnesium- and vitamin K2-rich foods, along with sensible sun exposure.

 80.
A study of 85 adolescents also revealed that vitamin D could be a viable therapeutic option to reduce the severity of primary dysmenorrhea. Participants received 50,000 IU of vitamin D weekly for five months, which significantly increased vitamin D levels while reducing dysmenorrhea symptoms.13

 81.
Vitamin D May Also Relieve Chronic Pain, Uterine Fibroids

 82.
In terms of other pain-related conditions, patients with arthritis, muscle pain and chronic widespread pain had significantly lower vitamin D levels than those without pain in a systematic review and meta-analysis.14

 83.
Vitamin D may also be useful for other reproductive conditions aside form dysmenorrhea, including uterine fibroids, which are growths that develop from the muscle tissue of the uterus. They can cause a variety of symptoms depending on their size, location and number, including heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pain and impacts to fertility.

 84.
One study examined how vitamin D levels might affect the development and progression of uterine fibroids, and compared women with vitamin D levels equal to or greater than 30 nanograms per milliliter (ng/mL) to those with serum levels lower than 20 ng/mL.15

 85.
Among the 1,610 women included in the study, vitamin D levels equal to or greater than 20 ng/mL were associated with an estimated 9.7% reduction in the growth of fibroids when compared to people with vitamin D levels below 20 ng/mL.

 86.
When the researchers looked at the data of individuals with vitamin D levels equal to or greater than 30 ng/mL, it was associated with an approximately 22% reduction in the incidence of fibroids compared to individuals with levels less than 30 ng/mL. The group with the highest vitamin D levels of greater than 30 ng/mL also had a 32% increase in fibroid tissue loss.

 87.
Sunlight Is the Best Source of Vitamin D

 88.
I strongly recommend getting your vitamin D from proper sun exposure, if possible, as it provides benefits beyond vitamin D optimization. Higher levels of vitamin D may even serve as a marker for healthy sun exposure, which in turn may be responsible for many of the health benefits, which include reduced risk of cancer and increased longevity, attributed to vitamin D.

 89.
Regular sun exposure, for instance, enhances production of melatonin — a potent anticancer agent.16 However, if you’re unable to get adequate sun exposure each day, vitamin D supplementation may be necessary. The global prevalence of vitamin D deficiency (defined as a level of less than 20 ng/mL) and insufficiency (defined as a level of 20 to less than 30 ng/mL) is 40% to 100%,17 so many people are lacking.

 90.
Further, 20 ng/mL has repeatedly been shown to be grossly insufficient for good health and disease prevention, which means the true prevalence of people without optimal levels of vitamin D is even greater. The only way to determine how much sun exposure is enough and/or how much vitamin D3 you need to take is to measure your vitamin D level, ideally twice a year.

 91.
Once you’ve confirmed your vitamin D levels via testing, adjust your sun exposure and/or vitamin D3 supplementation accordingly. Then, remember to retest in three to four months to make sure you’ve reached your target level.

 92.
The optimal level for health and disease prevention is between 60 ng/mL and 80 ng/mL (150-200 nmol/L), while the cutoff for sufficiency appears to be around 40 ng/mL. In Europe, the measurements you’re looking for are 150 to 200 nmol/L and 100 nmol/L respectively.

 93.
Progesterone Is a Key Treatment for Menstrual Pain

 94.
Progesterone controls prostaglandin production, and when progesterone levels decrease just before menstruation, prostaglandin levels increase. Women with dysmenorrhea have increased prostaglandin levels.18 Oral contraceptives, which often include progesterone or a synthetic form of it known as progestin, are commonly prescribed to manage dysmenorrhea — but they can destroy your health.

 95.
Instead, progesterone supplementation may help. The dose of bioidentical progesterone I recommend is 30 milligrams (mg) to 50 mg a day, mixed with a long-chain fat as described below, taken orally in the evening before bed, as it can promote sleepiness.

 96.
Women who still menstruate need to be careful with the timing of their progesterone supplementation, however. Progesterone is crucial for successful pregnancy, and you can severely inhibit your ability to get pregnant if you take it at the wrong time. (During pregnancy, progesterone actually skyrockets. In the third trimester, women produce about 600 mg a day.)

 97.
If your menses are regular, start taking progesterone on the 14th day after your menstrual flow begins, and take it for 14 days straight (until cycle day 27). If your cycles are short, start on day 12 and continue for 14 days. Always take the progesterone for the full 14 days even if your menses begin before the 14 days are over. Start the next progesterone 14 days after the flow began.19

 98.
There’s no toxicity to progesterone, unlike estrogen and testosterone, neither of which I recommend. Supplementing progesterone also will not lower your natural production, so you don’t need to be concerned about that. In fact, it enhances your natural production.

 99.
Progesterone, meanwhile, needs to be mixed into vitamin E for optimal bioavailability. Health Natura sells a progesterone in vitamin E product. Alternatively, you can make your own by dissolving pure USP progesterone powder in one capsule of high-quality vitamin E. The difference in bioavailability between taking progesterone orally without vitamin E and taking it with vitamin E is 45 minutes versus 48 hours.

 100.
Another good reason for taking progesterone with vitamin E is that it binds to red blood cells, which allows the progesterone to be carried throughout your body and be distributed to where it’s needed the most. What’s more, Georgi Dinkov cites research showing that when you dissolve a substance in vitamin E, it specifically targets sites with the highest inflammation, which may be particularly relevant for dysmenorrhea.

 101.
Ginger is another natural option. Evidence from six clinical trials showed ginger was effective to some degree in decreasing pain in women with dysmenorrhea.20 Fennel is another remedy for menstrual cramps and may relieve pain from primary dysmenorrhea as well as common NSAIDs.21

 166.
Fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi are powerful allies to your mental health, courtesy of the neuroactive microbes and molecules they contain.1 Microbes and their metabolites, created during fermentation modulate the microbiota-gut-brain axis, which involves neural, immune, endocrine and metabolic pathways.2

 167.
Writing in Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews, researchers with University College Cork (UCC) in Ireland and colleagues reasoned that fermented foods “offer an affordable dietary intervention strategy” for better mental health.3

 168.
Their review highlights how different types of fermented food not only have the potential to alter the makeup of microbiota in your gut but also influence the immune system and microbiota-gut-brain axis, with profound effects on your brain.

 169.
Fermentation — An Ancient Tool Valued for Modern-Day Mental Health

 170.
Many cultures around the world have relied on food fermentation since ancient times to increase the shelf-life of food. Fermentation also makes food more flavorful while helping to control potentially disease-causing microorganisms and improving foods’ digestibility.4

 171.
The process involves the conversion of carbohydrates into alcohol or organic acids using microorganisms like yeasts and bacteria under anaerobic conditions. This leads to the production of beneficial compounds now known to boost physical and mental health.

 172.
“Although ancient in origin, fermented foods are now seen as conduits for introducing beneficial microbes and molecules. Moreover, fermented foods are applicable therapeutics across various socioeconomic sectors given their potential affordability and cross-cultural accessibility,” the review explained.5

 173.
Fermented foods are rich in phytochemicals and microbe metabolites that include neurotransmitters and neuromodulators. These compounds stimulate pathways of the microbiota-gut-brain axis, including those of the immune system and neuroendocrine, enteric nervous and circulatory systems. When fermented foods are digested, they also produce compounds capable of modulating intestinal barrier and blood brain barrier permeability.6

 174.
Fermented foods may also help block dysregulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the system responsible for the management of stress, which has also been linked to multiple neuropsychiatric disorders.7

 175.
Researchers with APC Microbiome Ireland at UCC previously investigated the influence of a psychobiotic diet on the microbial profile and mental health of 45 adults.8 Participants were randomized to eat either a psychobiotic diet or a control diet for four weeks. The psychobiotic diet included fruits and vegetables high in prebiotic fiber, including onions, leeks, cabbage, apples and bananas, along with fermented foods, such as sauerkraut and kefir.9

 176.
After four weeks, those following the psychobiotic diet had a reduction in perceived stress. Those who followed the psychobiotic diet the most had the greatest decreases in stress. Further, significant changes were found in 40 different chemicals, along with subtle changes in microbial makeup. Professor John Cryan, one of the study’s lead authors who also worked on the featured Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews paper, said in a UCC news release:10

 177.

 178.
“Although the microbiome has been linked to stress and behavior previously, it was unclear if by feeding these microbes demonstratable effects could be seen. Our study provides one of the first data in the interaction between diet, microbiota and feelings of stress and mood.

 179.

 180.

 181.
Using microbiota targeted diets to positively modulate gut-brain communication holds possibilities for the reduction of stress and stress-associated disorders, but additional research is warranted to investigate underlying mechanisms.”

 182.

 183.
Virtually Any Fermented Food May Improve Brain Health

 184.
In the early stages of the research, study author Ramya Balasubramanian and colleagues compared sequencing data from more than 200 fermented foods in an effort to determine which are most beneficial for the brain. Nearly all of them showed promise, according to Balasubramanian, who said in a news release:11

 185.

 186.
“I expected only a few fermented foods would show up, but out of 200 fermented foods, almost all of them showed the ability to exert some sort of potential to improve gut and brain health … Fermented sugar-based products and fermented vegetable-based products are like winning the lottery when it comes to gut and brain health.

 187.

 188.

 189.
… For all that we see on sugar-based products being demonized, fermented sugar takes the raw sugar substrate, and it converts it into a plethora of metabolites that can have a beneficial effect on the host.

 190.

 191.

 192.
So even though it has the name ‘sugar’ in it, if you do a final metabolomic screen, the sugar gets used by the microbial community that’s present in the food, and they get converted into these beautiful metabolites that are ready to be cherry picked by us for further studies.”

 193.

 194.
The Neuroscience & Biobehavioral Reviews paper outlined a wide range of fermented foods that may be beneficial. Among them:12

 223.
Both food substrate and environmental conditions alter the fermented food microbiome and therefore its potential health effects. According to the review:13

 224.

 225.
“Fermented foods are diverse in their preparation, substrate category and type of fermentation. This can influence the microbiota and the molecular composition of fermented foods.

 227.

 228.
Subsequently, these components can influence the communication between the gut and the brain resulting in modulation of the intestinal barrier and blood brain barrier, peripheral and central immune system and nervous system and thereby modulating the intestinal milieu, general gut and brain health.”

 231.
Fermented Foods Help Ward Off Depression

 232.

 233.
Lactobacillus, found in fermented foods like yogurt, kefir, kimchi and sauerkraut, has been dubbed a “psychobiotic”14 because of its effects on mental health, particularly anxiety and depression. Lactobacillus bacteria help dampen stress responses and prevent depression and anxiety, in part, by modulating your immune system.15

 234.
Further, a healthy gut microbiome also depends on the consumption of fermented foods. A study assigned 36 adults to consume a diet high in fermented foods or high-fiber foods for 10 weeks. Those consuming fermented foods had an increase in microbiome diversity as well as decreases in markers of inflammation.16

 235.
In another example, Lactobacillus was found to produce gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter that inhibits excessive neuronal firing, helping to induce a natural state of calm,17 in animal studies,18 while also reducing depression-related behavior.19

 236.
A meta-analysis of cohort studies, involving 83,533 people, also found a significant association between consuming fermented dairy foods, including cheese and yogurt, and a decreased risk of depression.20 The study suggested the gut-brain axis may explain the link between fermented dairy foods and depression, as probiotic-rich fermented foods may help:21

 237.

 238.
Lower inflammation in the gut

 239.
Make the gut barrier stronger

 240.
Reduce stress responses via the HPA axis

 241.
Alter GABA receptor expression

 242.

 243.
One study using brain scans found that consuming fermented milk containing a variety of probiotics can lessen brain activity related to seeing sad or angry faces. Another study found that women who took probiotics had lower depression scores.22

 244.
Fermented Foods May Help Preserve Mental Health

 245.
Dietary interventions based on so-called “psychobiotics” were described as a “novel nutritional approach targeting gut microbiota for managing cognitive performance and preventing memory decline across the lifespan.”23 The review, published in Food Research International, suggests that fermented foods may help preserve mental health.

 246.
Further, feeding your microbes with a psychobiotic diet — one that’s rich in prebiotic and fermented foods — can also reduce stress and possibly stress-related disorders. The study authors stressed the benefits of using whole, fermented foods:24

 247.

 248.
“Although the more traditional psychobiotic candidates, such as probiotic and prebiotic supplementation, are promising approaches, using whole dietary approaches offers a number of advantages.

 249.

 250.

 251.
This includes the benefits associated with nutritional needs met primarily through whole diet, a more accessible way due to the necessity to consume a food daily, costs of supplemental products as well as the potential synergistic effects in the microbiota that could be elicited by complex diets.”

 252.

 253.
Interestingly, they also found that tryptophan metabolism may be one underlying mechanism behind fermented foods’ stress-relieving effects. “Tryptophan metabolism has been shown to be closely regulated by the microbiota and can serve as important bioactive messengers in the microbiota-brain communication,” the researchers explained, adding that it’s also involved in many brain-related disorders.25

 254.
How to Make Fermented Foods at Home

 255.

 257.

 258.
Given the numerous mental health benefits of fermented foods, if you haven’t yet incorporated them into your diet, now is an excellent time to start. Fermented vegetables are both simple and cost-effective to prepare at home. While you can find fermented foods at supermarkets and health food stores, many commercial options, such as yogurt and kefir, are not healthy.

 259.
Many of these products contain high levels of sugar, artificial sweeteners and additives, with a relatively low content of beneficial bacteria. The pasteurization process used in commercial products to extend their shelf life actually destroys the beneficial bacteria they’re supposed to contain.

 260.
To reap the maximum health benefits, either purchase raw (unpasteurized) versions of these foods at a health food store or food co-op, or make them yourself. Consuming a diverse range of fermented foods is beneficial, as each offers a unique set of beneficial bacteria.

 261.
Fortunately, making fermented foods at home is simpler than it might seem. It doesn’t require extensive time in the kitchen. Start by getting some wide-mouth canning jars and filtered water, along with select organic vegetables of your choice for fermenting. After packing your jars, the only step left is to wait a few days for the vegetables to ferment, or “ripen.”

 262.
You can view a step-by-step guide in the video above. As demonstrated, you’ll see that culturing vegetables is simple and cost-effective. You can also make your own homemade yogurt and kefir. If you don’t eat fermented foods on a regular basis, a probiotic supplement shouldn’t be considered a replacement for whole, fermented foods.

 315.

Recently, we reported that Sen. Durbin is planning on introducing his anti-supplement bill sometime in 2024. This bill would institute “mandatory product listing” (MPL) for supplements. Creating a registry of the supplement industry may sound harmless, but for the reasons we’ve outlined in the past, this policy is a real threat to your supplement access. To help show why, we need only look to our neighbors in the north: Canada. The evolution of the Canadian system shows how additional supplement regulations sought by Sen. Durbin and the FDA lead us down a path where consumers have ever fewer choices because so many products—especially the most efficacious—will be eliminated.

 316.
In the US, supplements are regulated as food; in Canada, they are regulated under the Natural Health Products Regulations as a distinct ‘third’ category, between foods and drugs, requiring pre-market approval. To sell a supplement in Canada, companies must first apply for and obtain a Natural Product Number (NPN) from Health Canada (the equivalent of the FDA). To get an NPN, a company must provide extensive information regarding the safety and efficacy of the natural health product.

 317.
Since Canada’s law came into effect in 2004, leading natural health advocates like Shawn Buckley at the Natural Health Product Protection Association have argued that innovation has taken a nose-dive and many small- and medium-sized supplement manufacturers and importers have been driven out of business. It’s not hard to see why—only large manufacturers selling cookie-cutter products are able to comply with the extensive costs of gaining pre-approval, muscling out smaller, more innovative companies offering the most effective natural products.

 338.
Though these drafts have gone through revisions, we can’t lose sight of the main point. What we’re witnessing is an attempt to double down on many of the bad ideas that characterized the response to the COVID pandemic. If the WHO gets its way, it will be medicine by diktat, and you can kiss your freedoms goodbye during the next pandemic…whenever the WHO Director-General decides that is.

 339.
IHR Amendments – different words, same old story

 340.
A new draft of the IHR amendments was released a few days ago. A number of the proposed amendments that were most contentious (that we discussed in previous coverage) have been dropped—particularly the change in Article 1 that turned non-binding WHO recommendations into binding orders. But don’t get too excited. The new text is still full of amendments aimed at compelling states to follow the WHO’s orders. This is done by changing “should” to “shall” in key parts of the text, as well as adding new sections compelling states to certain actions.

 386.

A new study on plastic pollution in 84 countries has linked half of branded plastic pollution to only 56 firms, with about 24% of the branded plastic waste analyzed connected to only five companies, including The Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone and Altria.

 387.
A team of researchers analyzed plastic pollution data from the Break Free From Plastic Brand Audit. The data spanned a total of 1,576 brand audit events over five years, from 2018 to 2022.

 388.
The analysis revealed about 52% of the 1,873,634 plastic items in the study were unbranded, which could be because sunlight, water or other environmental factors caused fading on labels.

 389.
“We found over 50% of plastic items were unbranded, highlighting the need for better transparency about production and labeling of plastic products and packaging to enhance traceability and accountability,” the authors wrote in the study, which was published in the journal Science Advances. “We suggest creation of an international, open-access database into which companies are obliged to quantitatively track and report their products, packaging, brands, and releases to the environment. Additionally, we recommend development of international standards around the branding of packaging to facilitate their identification.”

 390.
Of the remaining plastic items that did have visible branding, the study revealed the highest amount could be linked to one firm, The Coca-Cola Company, with 11% of the plastic waste items. The other brands linked to the highest number of analyzed plastic pieces include PepsiCo (5%), Nestlé (3%), Danone (3%) and Altria (2%). In total, these five brands made up about 24% of the branded plastic waste items.

 412.

Coal-fired power plants would be forced to capture smokestack emissions or shut down under a rule issued on Thursday by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

 413.
New limits on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electric plants are the Biden administration’s most ambitious effort yet to roll back planet-warming pollution from the power sector, the nation’s second-largest contributor to the climate crisis. The rules are a key part of Joe Biden’s pledge to eliminate carbon pollution from the electricity sector by 2035 and economy-wide by 2050.

 414.
The rule was among four separate measures targeting coal and natural gas plants that the EPA said would provide “regular certainty” to the power industry and encourage them to make investments to transition “to a clean energy economy”. They also include requirements to reduce toxic wastewater pollutants from coal-fired plants and to safely manage so-called coal ash in unlined storage ponds.

 415.
The new rules “reduce pollution from fossil fuel-fired power plants, protect communities from pollution and improve public health – all while supporting the long-term, reliable supply of the electricity needed to power America forward”, the EPA administrator, Michael Regan, told reporters at a White House briefing.

Wise

 462.

The three-member trade panel hearing the U.S. complaint over Mexico’s restrictions on the use of genetically modified corn in tortillas will no doubt need some scientific advice to evaluate the technical evidence presented by the Mexican government on the risks associated with GM corn and their accompanying herbicide residues. They got some on April 23 from a panel of experts assembled by the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) in the first of three webinars on the GM corn dispute.

 463.
Their message could not have been clearer. The Mexican government is right to doubt U.S. assurances that GM corn is safe to eat given the lax regulatory processes for GM crops in the U.S. There is a mountain of evidence that both GM corn and its accompanying herbicides, including glyphosate, may cause serious health problems. And those risks are magnified for Mexicans, who eat more than ten times the corn we eat in the U.S. and do so in minimally processed form, not processed foods.

 464.
“Has the U.S. government provided sufficient evidence to the Mexican government to assure the safety of GM corn, which is routinely sprayed with multiple herbicides known to be associated with reproductive problems, metabolic syndrome, and cancer?” asked pesticide expert Dr. Charles Benbrook in his remarks during the webinar. “No, because the studies have never been done.”

 488.
“It’s that delicious time of year again. Every April and May the Real Organic Project celebrates Florida’s Springtime blueberry season, thanks to the careful land stewardship of Hugh and Lisa Kent. The blueberries just taste better at King Grove Organic Farm compared to anything that you can find on store shelves. They were the first farm in America to use the Real Organic Project seal in 2019.

 489.
Hugh and Lisa work very long hours and typically harvest more blueberries per acre than the average “conventional” blueberry farm. The driver of all of this bounty is the organic growing system they have painstakingly invented over many years. Among other things, they designed and fabricated their own mowers to mulch “green manure” (the vegetation that grows in the rows between the blueberry plants) and move that mulch up onto the base of the plants. This living mulch turns into a weed barrier and becomes the primary fertility for the crop.

 490.
Together, we can rally around something beautiful. Thank you for your support of Real Organic Project farms.”

 499.
“Tim Spector explains how people can get 30 or more different plants per week into their everyday diets.

 500.
So you could also eat red, green and yellow bell peppers, and they will count as three different plants – or red onions, white onions and shallots, for example.

 501.
‘You can also get it from nuts and seeds, all the different types out there, each one counts as a different plant. Each herb and spice also counts. So actually, once you’ve counted them all, it’s not really as hard as it seems.’

 502.
According to the ZOE website, even small pinches or herbs and spices count towards the goal of 30 or more different plants per week. However, it adds that you may want to try and incorporate herbs and spices into several meals throughout the week to get the full benefits.

 503.
Apart from fruit and vegetables, legumes including beans, pulses and peas also count as different plants that can be added to your diet. Examples like black beans, broad beans, butter beans, chickpeas, green beans, kidney beans, lentils, and more are easily available.”

We are marking this anniversary with so much gratitude for where he has brought all of our organizations: Organic Consumers Association, Regeneration International, Vía Orgánica, and the entire organic regenerative movement.

 521.
Soon we will be sending a remembrance letter sharing more about his life, and with links to his memorial.

 522.
For now, you can see the outpouring of love and respect Ronnie received from people around the world by reading the comments found below his obituary.

 523.
From The Star Tribune obituary:

 524.
“Cummins, Ronnie (1946-2023), was a leading figure in the global organic regenerative food and farming movement. His enthusiastic organizing skills were infused with passion, warmth, courage and tenacity. He was tireless in his work for justice and peace. Ronnie called three places home. He developed deep roots in Finland, Minnesota, San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, and Minneapolis, Minnesota.

 525.
His work brought him around the world where he formed close relationships with activists working on organic regenerative food, farming, climate, and health freedom issues. He never gave up his passion for investigating the dangers of industrial food systems, genetic engineering and synthetic food technologies. He fought against the greed of the pharmaceutical, chemical, and pesticide industries, he was also earnest and optimistic in the search for climate solutions.

 526.
Ronnie was the co-founder and International Director of the Organic Consumers Association, (OCA) and its international affiliates, Regeneration International and Vía Orgánica. He had a passion for educating young people, and headed up the creation of Vía Orgánica, an agroecology farm school and research center in Central Mexico.

 527.
The last few years he dedicated endless time, energy and research to Vía Orgánica and Regeneration International’s Billion Agave Project (bit.ly/…); he firmly believed this could be game-changing as way to regenerate the land, make a major impact on carbon sequestration, the climate crisis, ease rural poverty and heartbreaking forced migration of so many small farmers around the world.”

 537.
Tallying up global food inventories, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Bank, and the International Panel of Experts on Sustainable Food Systems (IPES), all admit there is currently “no risk of global food supply shortages.” In reality there’s plenty of food for everyone, including the 840 million poverty-stricken people who will be going to bed hungry tonight. The wicked root of the crisis, as Vandana states, are those “sowing hunger and reaping profits.”

The diabolical architects of the food crisis are the international bankers, food and grain hoarders, and financial speculators, aided and abetted by the Poison Cartel—i.e. the global economic elite making “killer” profits from toxic food and (manipulated) rising food prices, destroying public health (much to the benefit of their Big Pharma allies) and exacerbating U.S. and global poverty. They are systematically undermining the livelihoods of small farmers and ranchers, especially those utilizing traditional/organic/agroecological farming and animal husbandry practices.

 538.
What we need is a regenerative food and farming revolution rooted in agroecology, food sovereignty, and Fair Trade/commerce, a participatory resistance and reset carried out by the global grassroots, North and South, farmers and consumers, urban and rural.

sep-solid" style="border-color:#2a2e38;">

Alexis Baden-Mayer, Political Director for OCA:

 546.
On April 15, 2024, healthbot tweeted, “USDA Organic Now Allows Glyphosate in Organic Hydroponic Food Production.” What healthbot didn’t mention is that the article they were linking to was from 2019 and, thanks to the good work of the Real Organic Project, this issue was resolved that year.

 547.
In 2019, the Real Organic Project blew the whistle on Monsanto (now Bayer)’s glyphosate-based Roundup herbicide being used to kill weeds around container-grown hydroponic berries just weeks before receiving organic certification.

 548.
The Real Organic Project had compelling evidence that this spraying was, in fact, happening. A letter from the accredited certifier Americert stated clearly that prohibited pesticides such as glyphosate had been used just prior to gaining certification in hydroponic operations and the USDA’s National Organic Program knew about it.

 549.
In response to the public outrage over this, the National Organic Program issued a memo to certifiers imposing new standards on transition time for hydroponic producers, requiring hydroponic producers to follow the same three year transition time required of real organic farmers.

 550.
The Real Organic Project considered this a pyrrhic victory. Chapman wrote:

 551.
“They have earlier said that none of this is happening. Now they are saying that yes, it has happened, and yes, it was against the law, but we are letting them keep their certification. We are giving them a mulligan. Because???

 552.
“I ask that the USDA reverse this position. Make these producers go through the 3-year transition period like all other organic growers. Failing that, I ask that they tell us which farms have sprayed prohibited chemicals. Don’t we, as customers, have the right to know? And which certifiers approved them in the first place?”

 553.
TAKE ACTION! 556.
“The human gut is finally receiving the respect it deserves — and so are its trillions of inhabitants. You are, at your core, a microbial being, and while microorganisms are found everywhere from your skin to your mouth and even your blood, it’s your large intestine where your body’s largest bacterial ecosystem resides.

 557.
If you treat it and the rest of your microbiome well, good health — both mental and physical — is likely to result. By nourishing this complex microbial community, you can even influence your gut-brain axis, which regulates digestion, mood, immune function and much more.

 558.
Your gut is home to bacteria, viruses, fungi, archaea and eukarya. The latter two resemble bacteria but are distinct groups of microorganisms. Bacteria, meanwhile, make up the vast majority of microbes in your microbiome. Three main phyla or groups of gut microbes make up the human microbiome and serve diverse structural, protective and metabolic functions:

 559.

 560.
Bacteroidetes — Porphyromonas, Prevotella and Bacteroides

 561.
Firmicutes — Ruminococcus, Clostridium, Lactobacillus and Eubacteria

 562.
Actinobacteria — Bifidobacteria (the most prevalent type)

 563.

 564.
Broken down, the average person may host the following quantities of bacteria in different body regions. Remember that this is just an average — your age, health status, diet and environment all influence the numbers and diversity of microorganisms in your gut.”
