34.

Talk about a class act! California legislators have just proposed a PETA-backed bill that could modernize science education and empower students to opt out of cruel classroom lessons. Assembly Member Ash Kalra (D–San Jose) introduced Bill 2640—the CLASS (Compassionate Learning Advancements for Science Students) Act—sponsored by PETA, Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL), and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

 35.

 36.
What Is the CLASS Act?

 37.
If passed, the CLASS Act will require that teachers inform their students about the sourcing and environmental concerns with dissection as well as their right to choose a non-animal replacement. This trailblazing bill would support a more inclusive, trauma-informed learning environment and could help prevent the deaths of many animals each year.

 38.
Animal Dissection Is a Lesson in Cruelty

 39.
Every year, more than 10 million animals are used for classroom dissection in the U.S.—and many of them, such as frogs, are specifically killed for this archaic practice. Frogs and some other animals are taken from their homes in nature, whereas others come from breeding facilities. Fetal pigs who end up on a dissection tray are often cut from their mother’s womb in a bloody slaughterhouse. Cats used for dissection could have been someone’s lost companion.

 40.
Educators should foster a compassionate learning environment—but forcing students to cut animals open promotes the exact opposite. Animal dissection teaches students that our fellow animals are nothing more than tools or props to be mutilated and then discarded. It also wastes school funds, exposes students and educators to formaldehyde—a known carcinogen—and deprives students of using advanced simulation methods, which studies show are superior to cutting up animals.

 41.
Students Deserve Better Science

 42.
No medical school in the U.S. or Canada engages in animal dissection as a teaching tool. Advances in medical-simulation technology, educators’ needs for better teaching and assessment tools, and the growing concern about using animals in experiments have all contributed to a paradigm shift in biomedical education. Today, simulation-based teaching is the best-practice standard in medical schools. All students, including those in grades K–12, deserve to be able to use it.

 43.
“Dissection is an outdated, dangerous, and inhumane practice that California needs to put behind us,” said Judie Mancuso, founder and CEO of SCIL. “Digital technologies offer a much better understanding of animal anatomy and spare children being exposed to formaldehyde, a known carcinogen. HR 28, the Humane Education Resolution, sponsored by SCIL in 2015 and adopted with bipartisan support, reminds schools that they are required by law to promote empathy, compassion, and respect toward animals in classrooms. Forcing kids to cut animals open does the exact opposite. There is nothing in current law that requires teaching dissection. It’s an easy choice for schools to transition to an approach that is safe, inexpensive, modern, and humane.”

 45.
Studies show that students who use non-animal methods perform as well as, if not better than, peers who dissect animals, according to a systematic review published in The American Biology Teacher, a leading, peer-reviewed science-education journal. Non-animal methods—such as eMind digital dissection software and synthetic dissectible models—also cut costs and reduce waste. Top academic programs, including the International Baccalaureate, the Next Generation Science Standards (which California adopted in 2013), and the College Board’s Advanced Placement program, don’t require—or even mention—animal dissection in their curricula.

 46.
Help Us End Animal Dissection

 47.
PETA’s humane science education division, TeachKind Science, works with educators to replace the use of animals in the classroom with interactive dissection software and realistic models.

 48.
If you’re a parent, talk to your child about saying NO to animal dissection and asking for a modern, humane option. If you’re in California, stay tuned for ways to support this bill. Be sure to sign up for PETA’s e-mails to be alerted to ways you can help.

 142.
Here are some suggested talking points to use in your outreach:

 143.

 144.
PETA Asia’s latest investigation into the cashmere industry in Mongolia, where Ralph Lauren obtains the fiber used in its products, shows that goats endure extreme abuse and are ultimately killed—and that meaningless labels like “responsible” are a complete sham. Despite the use of these labels, investigators found that goats screamed in terror as workers pinned them down, twisted their sensitive legs, and ripped their hair out with sharp metal combs, leaving some of these animals with bleeding wounds from shearing and tearing off pieces of their skin.

 145.
Workers kill the goats when they no longer produce a profitable amount of cashmere—often at only 4 or 5 years old, a fraction of their natural life expectancy. These inquisitive, communicative animals may spend their final moments terrified as workers drag them to the kill floor, bash in their heads with a hammer, and slit their throats.

 146.
Many leading companies and brands—including ASOS, Columbia, and The North Face—have banned cashmere. This list is growing, thanks to the increasing demand for vegan fashion and home goods. No one needs to wear items made from the hair of tormented goats who die in agony in slaughterhouses. There are plenty of cozy, stylish, and luxurious vegan materials that can replace the use of cashmere today, including organic bamboo, TENCEL, organic hemp, modal, lyocell, soy-based cashmere, and other plant-based or synthetic fibers that don’t involve cruelty to animals.

 194.

Dr. Frans de Waal, the primatologist who proved through his research that the cognitive abilities of other species not only rival those of humans but often surpass them, has died. At a time when scientists overwhelmingly dismissed theories in favor of animals’ sentience, he persisted. It would be difficult to overstate his contributions to our understanding of other animals’ remarkable intelligence and deep emotions.

 195.

 196.
Dr. Frans de Waal Helped Prove the Great Emotional Capacity of Animals

 197.
De Waal studied how animals resolve conflicts, reconcile, and cooperate. He famously demonstrated their understanding of fair and equal treatment. He presented clear and compelling evidence that animals experience emotions ranging from joy and happiness to profound sadness and grief, along with empathy, jealousy, and resentment.

 198.

“I cannot name any emotion that is uniquely human.”

 199.
—Dr. Frans de Waal

 200.
De Waal changed not only the scientific community’s long-held biases but also those of people around the world. His 16 books were translated into 20 languages, his speaking tours sold out, and his TED Talks were viewed millions of times. Frans de Waal made the undeniably just argument that animals are entitled to be treated as thinking, feeling, and valuable individuals—a right that we humans are too eager to reserve for ourselves. The more we acknowledge how clever and capable other animals are, the fewer excuses we can make to harm them.

 250.
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, PETA Germany and its partners have been building a robust network of animal rescuers, volunteers, and advocates to help as many animals there as they possibly can. You can support this work through PETA’s Global Compassion Fund.

 252.
Here’s how teams have moved mountains for animals in Ukraine since the onset of the war:

 253.

 254.
They’ve created 1,300 safe spaces for housing animals in need, including dogs, cats, horses, sheep, goats, chickens, pigeons, geese, ducks, swans, and fish.

 255.
PETA’s Global Compassion Fund helped establish a veterinary clinic in October 2022. Up to 130 seriously injured and ill animals can be operated on and given the best possible care every day.

 256.
Every month, team members perform spay/neuter surgeries for around 150 animals to prevent thousands from being born on the streets, only to suffer and die there.

 257.
Animals in Ukraine have received more than 3.3 million pounds of food and other provisions, despite conditions that often make deliveries difficult.

 258.
All the animals in the project receive regular veterinary care. The ones who will be transported to Europe for adoption are quarantined and prepared for the journey in accordance with EU regulations. This takes 16 weeks per animal! Around 60% of the animals are reunited with their guardians who have fled, while the remaining 40% are transported to our partner shelters in Europe.

 259.
Every day, 85 PETA-supported employees work on site to care for the animals there and rescue others.

 291.

PETA is urging Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS) to end a study in which live babies were repeatedly cut out of five pregnant baboons—in violation of federal law—and to release its surviving victims to a reputable sanctuary. The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which cited EVMS for the violation, recently went a step further and revoked permission for experimenters to conduct the multiple major surgeries on these primates—a rare step for the agency.

 292.
A baboon in a cage at EVMS rocks back and forth in psychological distress. Image obtained from this video by PETA through the Virginia Public Records Act

 293.
Documents obtained by PETA show that for over 40 years, experimenters at EVMS and their colleagues at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, with whom they share a federal grant, have impregnated baboons, injected them with hormones, and cut out and killed their babies at various stages of pregnancy. Documents obtained by the group show that hundreds of mother baboons and their babies have been used in these experiments and killed by the two schools. The studies, funded with tax dollars, have not resulted in any treatments for humans.

 294.
In 2021, the USDA cited the school for illegally performing up to six cesarean sections per female baboon without scientific justification or approval, as required under the federal Animal Welfare Act. In 2022, the agency then granted EVMS an exemption to the law, allowing it to do multiple cesarean sections if it followed basic experimental protocol—which it failed to do.

 295.
But the USDA withdrew its exemption after citing the school for, among other issues, failing to provide treatment to a 16-year-old baboon named Jemma (“ID #26876”) found unresponsive in her cage. She had already been subjected to two prior cesarean sections. Two days after she had been found unresponsive, she was subjected to a third cesarean section. Jemma’s daughter, who was near full term, was killed immediately after the surgery.

 296.
“EVMS has illegally and repeatedly cut into Jemma and the other baboons again and again for a pointless study that hasn’t helped a single human,” says PETA Senior Vice President Kathy Guillermo. “EVMS must end four decades of suffering now and send the surviving animals to a sanctuary.”

 297.
EVMS has a yearslong record of federal animal welfare violations—including at least eight in recent years, four of which were “critical” (i.e., having a serious or severe adverse effect on the health and well-being of an animal), and one pertaining to the baboon experiments classified as “repeat.”

 298.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness. First responders performed a high-angle rope rescue. Firefighter Ben Steele, using a harness and rope system, rappelled down to Kirby, who was fitted with a rescue harness and escorted safely to the beach below. Kirby was unharmed.

 322.
“These courageous firefighters didn’t hesitate to spring into action and save this frightened dog from a terrifying and perilous predicament,” says PETA Senior Vice President Colleen O’Brien. “PETA hopes their brave actions inspire people everywhere to step up and help when they see an animal in need.”

 323.
The department will receive a framed certificate and vegan chocolates from PETA.

 348.

“Greg Maffei Has Dogs’ Blood on His Hands!” That’s the message PETA supporters will bring to Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei’s Englewood home on Monday in the wake of the Iditarod deaths of Bog, George, and Henry, three young dogs who collapsed and died within about 48 hours of one another while being forced to race. The dog defenders will shout their call for Maffei to end his company’s shameful sponsorship of the deadly race.

In addition, a dog used by notorious musher Dallas Seavey was critically injured by a moose and musher Erin Altemus admitted that the dogs she was forcing to race were “mentally at their edge” and that some were limping and had shoulder injuries, including one who was carried in a bag to a checkpoint.

 353.
“Three dogs were just run to their deaths, and Liberty Media and Greg Maffei have their blood on their hands,” says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “The Iditarod continues only because of the quarter-million dollars funneled to it by Liberty Media, and PETA is calling on Maffei to put this money toward a good cause, not a despicable race that runs dogs into the ground.”

 354.
More than 150 dogs have died in the Iditarod since it began, with aspiration pneumonia (caused by inhaling their own vomit) the top cause. Up to half the dogs who start the race don’t finish it. During last year’s Iditarod, approximately 175 dogs were pulled off the trail due to exhaustion, illness, injury, or other causes, leaving the remaining ones to work even harder. The race ended in controversy after the winner was caught on video dragging exhausted dogs toward a checkpoint.

 383.
In Murray’s “monkey fright” experiments, she cuts into monkeys’ heads, saws off part of their skulls, and suctions out a portion of their brain or partially destroys it with toxic chemical injections. She then frightens the monkeys with realistic-looking fake spiders and snakes. In other experiments, she implants thick titanium posts in their skulls. She cages monkeys alone in her laboratory for years or even more than a decade, condemning them to social isolation that causes profound psychological and physiological distress. When she’s finally finished tormenting them, she kills them. Despite having failed to produce even one treatment or cure for humans, she has received more than $50 million in taxpayer funding since 1998.

 384.
“For decades, a government experimenter has mutilated monkeys’ brains, then purposely terrified them in pointless tests that do nothing to advance human health,” says PETA neuroscientist Dr. Katherine Roe. “PETA is calling on NIMH to stop pouring taxpayers’ money into monkey torment and commit to funding ethical, effective, animal-free research instead.”

 385.
PETA—whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to experiment on”—points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits for people who need a lesson in kindness.
