target="_blank">this tool from NWTC or this one from Oklahoma Christian University Test Generator.

The one from NWTC is easier for default setup of some testbanks. Many publishers create testbanks and use an asterisk at the end of correct answer like this:

1. Which of the following is a prime number?

a) 4

b) 5*

c) 6

This matters because you don't have to do much in terms of reformatting.

The tool from Oklahoma Christian University puts the asterisk at the front so you would have to go through and add the asterisk for each correct answer to make it look this:

1. Which of the following is a prime number?

a) 4

*b) 5

c) 6

So here are the exact steps for using the NWTC tool.

Step1: Open a Word Document; I like to copy and paste all the testbank questions into a single word file.

I might be creating a quiz that covers Chapters 1-5.

Rather than switching from different files for each chapter, I just copy and paste all the questions from all 5 chapters and than go through and choose the questions I want.

Step 2: Delete any questions you don't want in the test. You don't have to worry about numbering-- as long as there is a number in front of the question.

In other words, Ch1 might number from 1-20 and Ch2 might start over and number 1-20. You don't have to go through and renumber them all. It's fine as long as there is a number in front of a question.

Step 3: Go to NWTC's tool and copy the questions you want from the first chapter and paste them into the box on the left. Make sure there's a space after your last question and do the same for the questions in your next chapter. Again, the questions do NOT have to be numerically ordered; it's fine as long as there is a number before the question.

Again, be sure that there is a space between questions and a number, otherwise you risk one question being interpreted as part of the answers of a previous question

Step 4: Click "Generate"

Step 5: Then download the txt file.

Step 6: Go back to Bb and create a new test

Step 7: In the test canvas window, click "Upload Questions" and that's it!

the BEST way to take attendance using Google Forms and Google Sheets

TIPS: It's best to do this when your courses are pretty set so there are no additional add/drops-- saves you from having to change the values in the Google Form.

After a million different methods-- apps, spreadsheets, by hand-- I've finally hit upon the best way to take attendance! I use Google Forms and Google Sheets!

The Problem: attendance apps undoubtedly look the best and are probably the most polished. But it's not always easy to get info out of them, or they're hard to sync unless you're using desktop versions of them (and desktop versions aren't always available). And of course, spreadsheets alone usually required my taking attendance by hand and then entering them into the spreadsheets (double work for me).

The Solution: I always suspected that there had to be a way to combine Google Forms and Google Sheets to make this process easier. I just needed time to think things through a little and I decided to pay the upfront cost of doing this thinking to make it easier forever and ever. So here it is!

I create a single Google Form for all my classes.

The first field will be date.

The second field is a Multiple Choice field with a list of the classes I'm teaching and then make sure that "Go to section based on answer" is selected.

Create different sections for each class. This means that when I'm taking attendance for Sec 3, this question will ensure that I go to the list of students in Sec 3, etc.

Then, use "Multiple choice grid" as the question. This was the Eureka moment! Each student is listed and it's a breeze to indicate whether they're present, late, or absent, etc.

For the columns, enter what you want to use-- e.g. "Present", "Late", "Absent", "Excused", etc. In my case, I chose P for present, L for late, and A for absent.

Each row should be student names.

Now I used the Google Form webpage to take attendance for each class!

Also make sure you allow the respondent to edit their answers-- this allows me to change Absent to Present or Late when a student walks in late.

But we're not done, the magic is the next section working with the Google Sheet linked to the form so read on!

The Google Sheet will have the names of students arrayed at top.

And that's absolutely fine. In the above sample, you can see the date, the class section, and the attendance I took for some students. Again, this is fine, but I prefer a transposed view, so I created a new sheet that I named "Transposed" (how creative, right?!). Put your mouse in the first cell where you want to start transposing the data and use the formula =TRANSPOSE('Form Responses 1'!B1:110).

Notice that my first column keeps tracks of number of absences. I didn't want there to be a zero if the value wasn't found so I used a slightly modified countif formula: =<span class="default-formula-text-color" Since students are different classes, I use conditional formatting to highlight entire rows based on responses and classes.

Step 1: Highlight the entire range that you want the conditional formatting to apply to.

Make sure you select specific cells-- you may use A1:F (which highlights A1 to all of F):

Step 2: Under Format -> Conditional Formatting

Step 3: A window will pop up on the side. While the title may seem off-putting at first, it actually raises some interesting and important issues-- namely, the surprisingly little knowledge we actually have of women's bodies. In fact, this article follows along the same vein as the 1969 publication of Women and Their Bodies (later renamed to Our Bodies, Ourselves in 1971). The book was the result of a discussion between 12 women ranging in age from 23 - 39 and doctors about the women's experiences and personal stories. There is now a website from the organization: http://www.ourbodiesourselves.org/
25.
26. In addition to these resources, there are also two books from the company that makes American Girl:
27.

 28.
The Care and Keeping of You: The Body Book for Younger Girls

 29.
The Care and Keeping of You 2: The Body Book for Older Girls

 30.

 31. Finally, below is an excerpt from the Netflix show Orange is the New Black (*** Warning: Graphic language).
32.
33.
34.
35. All of this raises the question how much has changed since the 1969 publication of Our Bodies, Ourselves? What does the existence of such artifacts tell us about how we think about and talk about women's bodies?

ppt of vintage ads

Although I have these images pinned in Pinterest, it annoys me that it requires login to view them. I thought of those men recently while reading Suzanne Venker's addled rant against feminist women as the source of the unhappiness that saturates male-female relationships. I thought of how painful it is when you are used to having everything to now have only 80%. What a loss! Poor us! Equality sucks when you've been on top -- and men have been on top for so long that we think it's a level playing field.

Dove's 'Real Beauty' campaign is no different. On the one hand, the campaign was focused on valuing alternative standards (presumably more realistic standards) of beauty beyond the ones we typically see in the media. Yet, the company (Unilever) owns many brands whose other campaigns specifically reinforce the very beauty norms that the Dove campaign is critiquing. In short, part of the criticism is that a MNC is essentially coopting the women's movement and feminism to sell more products rather than making any real critique. Moreover, some point out that even the video below (which was widely shared), still reinforces the idea that beauty and outward appearance is centrally important to women's valuation of themselves.
Yet, researchers are still trying to figure out social media's impact on young people (and older people) alike. And of course there are numerous types of social media. For example, some argue that the rise of social media including selfies are positive for women or that social media such as Twitter have given voice and power to otherwise powerless people. Certainly, the rise of easy video-technology has played a large role in the rise of movements such as Black Lives Matter.
55.
56. However, there is also another side to social media that includes cyber-bullying, trolling (which often exhibits virulent racism and sexism), and there is no clear advantage that selfies are all that empowering for women and girls. Here is NPR's interview with Nancy Jo Sales on her new book, American Girls.
57.
I also share these slides with students. It turns out that embedding Google Slides isn't as straightforward as one would think. There are two methods for embedding Google Slides: 1) publish your presentation to the Internet and use the provided embed code or 2) don't publish your slides and modify the url.

The difference has to do with the permissions.

Public on the web means that it will be available to anyone. Public documents and files can show up in search results, and anyone who finds the web address of the doc can access it.

Anyone with the link is like an unlisted phone number. Another person can only view it if they have the exact URL of the doc, file or folder.

Here's a great, clear and well-written explanation of the permissions: Visibility options in Google Drive: Difference between Private, People at Blake School with the link, The Blake School, Anyone with the link, Public on the Web

Option 1: Public on the web
Of the two methods, the first is the easiest. That's because when you publish your slides to the web, you create a copy of your file as a unique webpage with its own URL and Google provides the embed code. So embedding your slides is as easy as copying the embed code and pasting it Blackboard or any website.

Option 2: Anyone with the link
But what if you didn't want your slides to be that public or show up in search results? That's when you might want to go with the second option of making the presentation available to anyone with the link. But if you choose this option, there are some things you have to do before you can embed the presentation so your students can see it. The reason is because when you choose this option, you don't actually create a webpage that can be embedded. The way around this is to create a "preview" option of your presentation.

How to make see the "preview" mode of your presentation:

Step 1: Make your slides public by changing the permissions to Anyone with the link can view.

Step 2: In the presentation's URL, replace the highlighted section with "preview".

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1XO1C6ygsiRUhjj5ahhhajZQaALiqQNAQPf2IRzPG874/edit#slide=id.g88e2a4cae6_0_94

https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1XO1C6ygsiRUhjj5ahhhajZQaALiqQNAQPf2IRzPG874/preview with some numbers after it

Step 3: Copy the new URL.

Step 4: In order to use the iframe code, you will need to use the HTML editor in Blackboard. Click the HTML button to pull up the html editor:

Step 5: Copy the iFrame code below and paste it into the html editor in Bb. And I’ve quickly realized that one of the major problems for us is fragmentation. For example, there are no less than 9+ adjunct organizations related to CUNY. There are also at least 2 nation-wide organizations I know of, and of course, there are countless smaller, school-based organizations.

image comes from Georgia Political Review

69. Here’s a list:
70.
71. CUNY-centered
72.

 73.
PSC CUNY (Professional Staff Congress- based)

 74.
CUNY Adjunct Project (a DSC (Doctoral Student Council) project)

 75.
CCU (CUNY Contingents Unite) (tied to wider labor movements)

 76.
QC Adjunct Task Force (based at Queens College)

 77.
OccupyCUNY.com

 78.
OccupyCUNY on Facebook

 79.
OccupyCUNY - News

 80.
ccupyCUNYGC on twitter

 81.
AdjunctsforLiberation (actually ours! now defunct)

 82.

 83. Nation-Wide
84.

 85.
COCAL (Coalition of Contingent Academic Labor)

 86.
Adjunct Project

 87.
The New Faculty Majority blog

 88.
The New Faculty Majority Coalition (and on Facebook)

 89.

 90.
 91. I don’t think this fragmentation is an accident. The main reason for such fragmentation is the nature of an exploited labor force. Like all exploited labor, most of us are usually just struggling to survive on pennies (no exaggeration). These conditions result in folks who are usually too busy to put in the time and effort to galvanize and develop a unified movement— can you imagine building a large company where you and all the workers also work full time in other jobs?!
92.
93. Additionally, those at the top (the ones doing the exploiting) are strongly vested in keeping us fragmented. Imagine what the Hunter Adjuncts movement would be like if we had space to meet regularly at Hunter (instead of having to fight for office space to meet with students!)! Or imagine if adjuncts who make up a large majority of the teaching faculty CUNY-wide had their own union (a pet wish of mine; after MANY years, no one has yet been able to fully convince me that being a part of CUNY’s full-time faculty union is really the best thing for CUNY’s part-time faculty!).

short video about the Model Minority myth

A short video on the Asian American "model minority" myth and why it matters.

comes from The Occidental

After watching the video, what are some problems you see about the model minority?

 104.
105. This is flow of immigrants from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. Notice in which direction, the immigrants flow in the first map:
175.
"For 70 years, there stood a public housing community in Chicago known as Cabrini Green. Home to thousands, misunderstood by millions, Cabrini Green once towered over some of Chicago’s most expensive neighborhoods, a looming reminder of inequality and poverty. Cabrini’s high-rises were demolished as part of Chicago’s $1.5 billion Plan for Transformation, funded through the federal HOPE VI program. The result was an African American community cleared to make room for another social experiment: mixed-income neighborhoods.

Shot over the course of twenty years, 70 Acres in Chicago: Cabrini Green (2015; U.S.; 55 min.), directed by Ronit Bezalel, documents this upheaval, from the the fiery protests to save the complex, to the razing of the first buildings in 1995, to the clashes in the mixed-income neighborhoods that replaced it. 70 Acres tells the volatile story of this hotly contested patch of land, while looking unflinchingly at race, class, and who has the right to live in the city."
