When you restore your computer from a system image, you cannot choose individual files to restore, and all of your programs, system settings, and files are replaced with those on the system image. If you perform a system image to restore your computer, you will only need to replace the programs and files that were added after you created a system image. To restore your hard drive from a system image, follow the steps below. Choose the appropriate method of restoration based on the condition of your computer: If you have access to Control Panel in Windows or wish to restore the system image onto another computer, follow the steps below. Click Start, enter Backup into the search field, and click Backup and Restore when it becomes available in the list. Click Recover system settings or your computer. Click Advanced recovery methods. Click Use a system image you created earlier to recover your computer, then follow the on-screen instructions. If you cannot access Control Panel in Windows, and you do not have a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc, follow the steps below. Restart the computer using the computer's power button. If your computer only has Windows 7 installed, hold the F8 key down before the Windows logo appears. Redo these first two steps if the Windows logo appears. If your computer has more than one operating system installed, use the arrow keys to highlight the preferred operating system, then press the F8 key. On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight Repair your computer, and then press Enter. Select a keyboard layout, and then click Next. Select a user name, type the password, and then click OK. On the System Recovery Options menu, click System Image Recovery, and then follow the on-screen instructions. If you cannot access Control Panel in Windows, but you do have a Windows installation disc or a system repair disc, follow the steps below. Insert the installation disc or system repair disc. Restart your computer using the computer's power button. If prompted, press any key to start the computer from the installation disc or system repair disc. If your computer is not setup to start from a CD or DVD, you may need to change your computer's BIOS settings. Before the Windows logo appears, hold the F9 key down to access the Boot Option Manager. Use the arrow keys to highlight Internal CD/DVD ROM Drive, then press Enter. Choose your language settings, and then click Next. (Only if you have a Windows installation disc. If not, continue to step 6) Click Repair your computer. Select a recovery option, and then click Next to continue.

This option quickly reads your product Service Tag and pulls up the Product Support page with self-help content, such as tutorials, drivers and warranty information, on your mobile device. Step 1: Find the Service Tag barcode of the product you need support for. The Service Tag barcode is usually found on the back or bottom of your Dell product . A Service Tag is a 7-character code that Dell uses to identify your specific product and allows you to access customized support options based your product’s tech specs and warranty. Figure 1: Example of a Service Tag barcode on the back of a Dell product. Figure 2: Example of a Service Tag barcode on the back of a Dell product. Step 2: Scan the Service Tag barcode with your device’s camera. On your smart phone or tablet, go to the Dell Support homepage and under Product Support, click the Begin button. Your device’s built-in camera function will open. Select from the available onscreen options to take or upload a photo of the Service Tag barcode. Dell will read the Service Tag from the photo, and a Product Support page will open automatically on your device. Tips for taking a good photo of your Service Tag barcode Make sure that the barcode is legible on your product. The scan may not be able to read faded, damaged, or dirty barcodes. Make sure the whole barcode appears in the photo. Note: There is often one or more barcodes in close proximity to the Service Tag barcode. It is okay if there is more than one barcode in the photo; the tool will read the Service Tag barcode. When taking a photo, tap the center of the screen to bring the barcode into focus.

Couple of days ago I replaced my old b/g D-Link router for a shining new Cisco / Linksys EA3500 Gigabit b/g/n router. All wireless notebooks/netbooks/iPhones & Macbook work perfect, except one Windows 7 Home 64bit Dell Inspiron N5110 notebook. At first all seemed to be fine. After a couple of hours browsing and Youtube the wireless Internet became really slow. It was impossible to watch any Youtube video. Another Win 7 netbook works fine. I did the following on the Dell notebook: Disabled ip6 Disabled network mapping services ipconfig /flushdns and one or two other suggestions I found and can't remember. At first it worked - Internet speed was back to normal. But a day or two later it happened again - slow Internet. Again cleared the DNS, checked that all settings were OK (DHCP, all on auto like the other PCs). Checked the router and even disabled UPnP - no go. Now I can't get decent speed anymore. To test the hardware, I booted the Dell notebook with a Linux Mint 13 live USB stick and wireless Internet works perfect!!! The Dell comes with an Intel Wireless 1030 module and I suspect that the Dell/Intel Wireless utilities may interfere with the Windows drivers. Lately I get this window popping up (and disappearing after a few seconds) that the Intel Wireless blah blah is ready. I believe I used Windows utilities to set up / change the wireless network, but I'm not sure anymore.

 63.

Updating your operating system and software is important. On the other hand, we have previously covered why you shouldn’t generally update your hardware drivers, although gamers will definitely want to update their graphics drivers. But what about BIOS updates? BIOS updates will not make your computer faster, they generally won’t add new features you need, and they may even cause additional problems. You should only update your BIOS if the new version contains an improvement you need. What’s a BIOS? BIOS stands for basic input/output system. When you power your computer on, your BIOS takes control, starting the power-on self test (POST) and passing control over to the boot loader, which boots your computer’s operating system. The BIOS is low-level system software that should “just work” without getting in your way. Computers are now coming with UEFI firmware instead of the traditional BIOS, but the same is true for UEFI – it’s low-level system software with a similar role. Unlike your operating system (which is stored on your hard drive), your computer’s BIOS is stored on a chip on your motherboard. Flashing a BIOS Manufacturers often release updates to their computers’ BIOSes. If you built your own computer, a BIOS update would come from your motherboard vendor. These updates can be “flashed” onto the BIOS chip, replacing the BIOS software the computer came with with a new version of the BIOS.

 72.

Despite using science and technology to better our lives, we are the real slaves to technology. We indulge in the need to always have something electronic in our hands – a tool that connects us to the Internet, our games or to our social networks. We’re bypassing the real world to get a digital quick-fix; our work, play and plans for stress release seem to depend on a broadband connection. It’s only a matter of time before the same need compels today’s generations to act, react, think and behave so much differently from the pre-connected generations, for instance… 1. A new kind of danger on the road Have you ever found yourself checking your smartphone for updates while still behind the wheel? I do; when I stop at a red light, queue up at a drive-thru, or while waiting to pick someone up. It’s a silly thing to do, I admit, but I’d never do the same when the vehicle I’m driving is moving, but that’s just me. While we’re on the subject, drivers on the road are getting younger and younger; and the cars are getting bigger and more powerful. In many countries in the world, a 16-year-old who can barely hold his beer can legally go behind the wheel and speed 50 mph down the highway. Add the lethal dose of an addiction to their phones, a sense of reckless abandonment, and you have a recipe for disaster. The Impact Well, so many people are actually texting while driving, and getting into accidents that there is now a call by the National Transportation Safety Board (in the US) to ban texting or the use of electronic devices while driving a vehicle. Watch the news report and the video embedded in the link to get an inside view of how dangerous this phenomenon is. 2. The digital divide – at home Individuals at every stage of their lives are now (over) exposed to technological gadgets. iPads are unashamedly used to babysit or pacify rowdy children from as young as 4 years old. Its easy-to-use interface, and colourful, entertaining and engaging apps attract the attention of these little ones, who reciprocate with the need of a constant feed of entertainment, day and night. Try taking the iPad away from the kid and you’ll see what I mean. It’s no wonder that the iPad can easily be classified as a toy for this reason.

 81.

The submission process for the International Journal of Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning is done through the Editorial Manager system, located at Manuscripts should be prepared with minimal formatting and submitted in an acceptable file format, such as MS Word. PDF is NOT an acceptable format. As described in the steps below, you will need to submit a title page, a manuscript file and optional files of figures and tables. Further submission guidelines and detailed layout instructions are available at The submission process involves several steps. Please use these instructions as a guide while submitting your manuscript. The journal now accepts submissions in two formats: Single-spaced and formatted with embedded figures and tables. This is the preferred format: it makes it easier to read, to review and to judge its length. Please use the Word template. Most published papers are about 20 pages long in this format. Double-spaced in APA format with figures and tables separated from the text. This format was designed for previous journal production processes. It is still acceptable. You may use either of these formats. Follow these steps: Log in and/or Register with the system: Log in to the Editorial Manager System. If you have not already registered with the system, follow the links and provide the requested information. If you are available as a reviewer for the journal, please mark that option on the registration page and select your personal classifications. Once you have registered and logged into the system, you may select “Submit New Manuscript.” Enter Article Title: Enter the article title as it appears on the manuscript. Select Article Type: Select your article type from the drop-down list. Add Authors: Please enter the requested information for every person who should be listed as an author or co-author. Once all contributing authors have been entered, you can use the up and down arrows to arrange them in the desired author order. Register a Corresponding Author. Select one author to be the “corresponding author”; this author needs to be registered with the Editorial Manager system. Please Note: the corresponding author will be the only author able to view the status of a manuscript and track its progress through the system. If the selected corresponding author is not already registered, the submitting author will be prompted to register that author — follow the link and provide the requested information. After the corresponding author is successfully registered, you will be redirected back to step number 4. The corresponding author will receive registration confirmation via email; this confirmation email will contain their user ID and password. Re-enter the corresponding author’s name and email address and re-select them as the corresponding author. You will then be prompted to “verify” this author by providing the user ID that was chosen when they were registered. Enter Keywords: Enter 3 to 10 keywords that describe the main subject areas of the article. These will be used for indexing purposes. Select Document Classification: Check the boxes that most accurately classify your article. These will be used for assigning your paper to expert reviewers. Enter Comments: Enter any comments that you would like to address to the editors regarding your submission. These comments will not appear in the manuscript. Upload Files: Because ijCSCL uses a double-blind reviewing system, you must upload at least two files for your submission: (1) a title page containing the title of the manuscript and the correspondence and affiliation information for all authors, and (2) the manuscript, which should NOT CONTAIN the names, affiliations, or correspondence information for ANY author. Take care to remove author names from the footnotes or running heads of the manuscript before submitting. In addition, if the manuscript contains any figures or tables, these files should be uploaded at this time. Either clearly label and save each figure or table as a separate file and upload them individually, or combine all the figures (or tables) used in the manuscript in a single file of figures and upload that document. Confirmation: Once all the necessary materials have been uploaded into the system, a PDF submission package will be automatically constructed. The corresponding author will be notified via email when this process is complete. Depending on the size of the files uploaded, this may take as long as an hour. This submission package will need to be approved by the corresponding author before it is submitted to the editorial office for peer review. The corresponding author should log back into the Editorial Manager system using their user ID and password (supplied in an email when they were registered), select the “Submissions waiting for author’s approval” link, view the submission, and approve or remove the submission package. Once the submission package is approved by the corresponding author, the manuscript will be submitted to the Editorial Office. Review process: Correspondence during the review process will take place between the ijCSCL editors and the corresponding author. The corresponding author can track progress of the manuscript through the review process in the Editorial Manager system.

Intro This script checks warranty status for Dell, HP, IBM and Lenovo manufactured devices stored in Device42. Prerequisites In order for this script to check warranty status of the device, the device must have hardware model and serial number entered in Device42. Dell Warranty Status API key must be acquired as well. Changes Moved from just showing last date to showing all warranties and services found in the api call Comparison on existence of registration per purchase/support info (per line on the order) based on serial, line contract id and contract end date Moved from querying ALL devices to just querying the devices from the vendor itself (so skipping virtual machines and other manufacturers) Using offset per 100 requests instead of doing a full request of all devices Brief pause per api call to prevent blockage at the api request site (1 second pause per api call) Making a remark if the session for the api call is unauthorized (http code 401) Plans Include life_cycle event to register the purchase date. Unfortunately it can’t can done now, as I can’t easily compare purchases with the information found at dell. The life_cycle event doesn’t give back the serial, only the devicename. It would be nice if the serial_no could be added to the output of GET /api/1.0/lifecycle_event/ Gotchas If either hardware model or serial # is missing, warranty status won't be checked for device. HP script unstable, may require retries. Usage Set required parameters in warranty.cfg file and run warranty_dell.py script: python starter.py
