47.

Felix Rosenqvist says that his regular presence at the top of the IndyCar times this season is down to the leadership role he has adopted at Meyer Shank Racing. After qualifying on the front row at St. Petersburg and finishing third in the non-championship round at Thermal Club, Rosenqvist ended opening practice at Long Beach in fourth, and the top Honda representative.

 48.
After two seasons at Chip Ganassi Racing alongside Scott Dixon, and three at Arrow McLaren partnering Pato O’Ward, Rosenqvist joined Meyer Shank Racing this year as partner to Tom Blomqvist. Although Blomqvist knows the team better having raced for two years in IMSA (winning the title in 2022) and starting three IndyCar races last year as a sub for the injured Simon Pagenaud, he is nonetheless an IndyCar rookie.

 49.
Naturally, therefore, Rosenqvist’s five years of experience in the NTT IndyCar Series has meant he spearheads the Meyer Shank’s setup direction on race weekends, and he says he’s reveling in this prominent role.

 50.
“Sure, I feel like they’re really behind me, which is huge,” he said. “I mean, I think honestly everywhere I’ve been in IndyCar, I’ve felt good support. Maybe this year it’s a bit different ’cause I have to step into that role.

 51.
“I have to trust that my direction is going to be good both for me and Tom. He’s getting up to speed still. He’s a rookie. A lot of these places are new tracks and new experiences for him, where I’m kind of feeding out of what I did in the past.

 52.
“It’s been working good so far. I feel like we get it right more times than we don’t. We’re not perfect, obviously. We want to do better. Yeah, it’s been gelling well between us. It’s a rewarding experience, as well, because it’s tough. Pato probably knows what it’s like when you’re the leading driver in the team. It’s also pressure that you want to take the right decision and lead the team in the right direction. Yeah, it’s going really well so far. Happy for them to put that trust behind me.”

 67.
Rosenqvist said it was no surprise that his MSR Honda’s strong pace from St. Pete had carried through to Long Beach.

 68.
“I think they’re both kind of in the same family of track,” he said. “They’re fairly smooth for being street courses, if you compare to Toronto and Detroit. They’re the more aggressive ones we go to. Also Nashville…which we’re not going to anymore.

 69.
“I think a lot of it [applies] here. We took our package and polished it a little bit for what we need here. It’s essentially more or less the same car…

 70.
“We’ve been confident, especially on the street courses. Still kind of learning how to work with each other every run out there. Yeah, happy so far. Solid.”

 71.
The 32-year-old Swede also observed some notable improvements in the Long Beach track surface for its 49th Grand Prix, particularly the corner leading onto the back straight.

 72.
“Turn 8 was quite a big difference,” he said. “I didn’t actually know it was different. I know they did some modifications, but I didn’t think that was the worst place.

 73.
“It’s really nice now. You can carry a ton of speed. I think there’s going to be some interesting onboard footage in qualifying for you to watch, for sure.

 74.
“They’ve done a good job. I think even in Turn 5 they did a curve modification that seemed to work well for us.”

 97.

Arrow McLaren newcomer Theo Pourchaire was full of smiles after completing his first outing in an IndyCar on Friday during the opening practice session at the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach.

 98.
The Frenchman got his first taste of the No. 6 Dallara DW12-Chevrolet, the first feel for Firestone tires, and his first dance with the imposing walls that line the quick 1.9-mile street course and loved every minute of it.

 99.
“The car is great to drive,” Pourchaire told RACER after placing 21st in the 27-car field. “It’s very powerful. I’m surprised by that. The power is crazy. And it’s also very difficult physically. The steering wheel is for sure heavy, but the bumps are tough so overall, I’m happy.”

 100.
The reigning FIA Formula 2 champion got to enjoy one of Long Beach’s finest products—traffic—and lost the chance to complete a full lap at speed on Firestone’s faster alternate tires. It could limit his progress in qualifying.

 101.
“I had a little bit of traffic; I didn’t complete any laps on the alternate tire, which is not a big deal in my first session in IndyCar, so I don’t care if I am finishing 21st or P1,” he said. “The most important thing is to learn, but I didn’t get to do the last two corners [without traffic] which is not so good for tomorrow’s qualifying.

 102.
“I don’t have any feeling on the alternate in Turn 10 or the hairpin, but it’s alright. I’m happy. I’m learning lap after lap and I’m happy with the feel of the car.”

 125.

Pato O’Ward put Arrow McLaren on top in first practice for the 49th Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, heading Team Penske’s Will Power and Scott McLaughlin in a Chevrolet 1-2-3.

 126.
Power was the first driver to lap the 1.968-mile 11-turn course under 68s, with 1m07.6561s which he then lowered to a 1m07.4264s on his seventh lap. Felix Rosenqvist of Meyer Shank Racing took a strong shot at top spot but fell 0.0160s short, before Colton Herta bumped Power by 0.0047s with a 1m07.4217s effort for Andretti Global.

 127.
Teammate and defending pole- and race-winner Kyle Kirkwood suffered downshift issues in his Andretti Global Honda in the early part of the session, unable to select first gear, while McLaughlin scraped the wall exiting Turn 8 on his way to fifth fastest at the time. Power would do something similar and take a trip into the Turn 9 runoff, while Newgarden moved himself up to seventh, just behind fellow two-time champion Alex Palou who was the top Chip Ganassi Racing driver at the time.

 128.
With his 12th lap, McLaughlin bounded to the top with a 1m07.3976s, just 0.0508s ahead of Herta who took a brief trip into the Turn 8 runoff, while Ganassi’s rookie Kyffin Simpson locked up and stalled in Turn 9 runoff, obliging race control to throw a red flag, just before the checkers.

 129.
As explained here, IndyCar continues to work on its format for first practice sessions on road and street courses, so after 45 minutes of all 27 cars being allowed on track, there was a five minute break. Thirteen cars were then allowed out for 10 minutes before parking, then the other 14 took to the circuit. The exception was for rookies who were allowed to participate in both 10-minute sessions. Most teams took the gap as the natural break in which to make the switch to Firestone’s alternate tires, using the guayule-sidewalled Firestones.

 144.
Rahal Letterman Lanigan’s Christian Lundgaard went fastest with 1m07.0855s before Pato O’Ward monstered his Arrow McLaren-Chevrolet around in 1m06.6874s, an average of more than 106mph.

 145.
His erstwhile teammate Rosenqvist jumped to second ahead of Lundgaard just before the checker fell, while Indy NXT champion and rookie Christian Rasmussen went fourth fastest in a very encouraging performance for Ed Carpenter Racing.

 146.
Out came the other half of the field for their 10 minutes, and Newgarden elected to run three laps on primaries at the start of the session. His teammates McLaughlin and Power delivered 1m06.8s to cement second and third fastest, albeit 0.1384 and 0.1553 off O’Ward’s benchmark, but a fraction ahead of Rosenqvist, Palou, Lundgaard and late improver Alexander Rossi (McLaren). Another red flew when Simpson needed a jumpstart from the Turn 9 runoff, but then Power made a late improvement to trim his deficit to O’Ward down to just 0.0937s. McLaughlin missed the chance to do the same when he went into Turn 1’s runoff.

 147.
Formula 2 champion Theo Pourchaire, substituting for the injured David Malukas, finished the session in 21st, 1.5983s off top spot, but happy that he could have done much better had he not encountered traffic while running the alternate tire compound. He turned 34 laps, more than any other driver.

 148.
Agustin Canapino excelled, clocking 11th for Juncos Hollinger Racing, while Kirkwood finally got a representative flying lap under his belt – despite a blank dashboard – and jumped to ninth spot.

Sebastien Bourdais went to the top of the time sheet just as time ran out in the final 90-minute practice session before qualifying.

 170.
With the track more rubbered in and temperatures having risen a bit with the sun breaking through the morning cloud cover, Bourdais turned a 1m11.637s lap (98.9mph) in the No. 01 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R to steal the glory from the previous quick runner,Nick Yelloly in the No. 25 BMW M Team RLL M Hybrid V8. Yelloly’s best was 0.484s off Bourdais. The first practice’s fast performer, Pipo Derani, was third with a 1m12.218s lap in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac Racing V-Series.R.

 185.
Philipp Eng kept both BMWs in the top five with a 1m12.454s lap in the No. 24, followed by Nick Tandy in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963. Until Bourdais’ blistering lap at the end of the session, the top nine cars had been within a second, but Tandy ended up being the last within a second of the best time.

 186.
Both Acuras continued to struggle, with the two Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti ARX-06s toward the bottom of the chart; only the No. 5 Proton Competition Porsche 963 was slower.

 187.
As in GTP, the best time in GTD was turned at the very end of the session, courtesy of Stevan McAleer. Sheena Monk’s new full-season partner in the No. 66 Gradient Racing Acura NSX GT3 Evo22 flew to the top with a 1m18.259s time, good for a 90.53mph average around the a.968-mile, 11-turn temporary circuit. Danny Formal was second, 0.102s behind in the No. 45 WTRAndretti Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2, with Albert Costa Balboa third in the No. 32 Conquest Racing Ferrari 296 GT3 at 1m18.382s.

 190.
The No. 32 Korthoff Preston Motorsports Mercedes AMG that had heavy contact with the wall in the morning at the hands of Mikael Grenier did not turn any laps during the session. The other car that had contact in the first practice, the No. 70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S, had to undergo a gearbox change after Brendan Iribe toasted the McLaren’s clutch as he tried to back out of the tires in Turn 1. It was an all-hands moment as the team had only a couple of hours to get the swap done.

 191.
The second practice session ran uninterrupted by any red flags, although several cars visited the various runoff areas around the track.

 215.

Ida Zetterstrom has put her first passes behind the wheel of an NHRA Top Fuel dragster in the books with multiple test sessions over the last two weeks.

 216.
Zetterstrom got behind the wheel for the first time Monday following the Arizona Nationals in Phoenix. The 2023 FIA European Top Fuel champion, who hails from Sweden, has relocated to the United States and will compete with JCM Racing as a teammate to eight-time champion Tony Schumacher.

 217.
“It was a good day,” Zetterstrom told RACER after the Phoenix test. “We had a really successful test session. It was great for me to finally be able to jump in the car and make some laps.”

 218.
The original plan was for Zetterstrom to begin testing after the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing season began in Gainesville last month. However, because she had not entered the event, she could not get on track. It made the wait even longer for Zetterstrom, whose emotions and nerves were pushed to post-Phoenix.

 219.
“I felt really calm,” Zetterstrom said. “I felt really calm and ready. I’ve gotten to know the team I have around me, and we’ve worked together on this for some months. So, I felt very comfortable and very calm and collected. Of course, going down to the line in the tow car, I did feel some butterflies just the fact that you don’t really know what to expect when you’re in a new car, and this doesn’t matter if you’re in the U.S. or Europe.

 220.
“Every car is different, and you’re still waiting to find out what you’re dealing with because a lot of things you can try in the pit and the workshop, but when you actually hit the track that’s how you find out how the car is reacting. Also, the fact that I haven’t been in a Top Fuel (dragster) since the first week of September when our season started in Europe, and I think if you ask most of the drivers making those first hits of the year, it’s always a little bit more exciting or butterflies than it is otherwise. But as soon as we made it to the line and I jumped in the car to start getting ready, I felt no stress or butterflies but really calm and at home in the car. So that was good.”

 221.

 222.
Zetterstrom tested the brand-new car built for her at Phoenix. A week later, the Monday after the 4-Wide Nationals in Las Vegas, she tested in Schumacher’s backup car because the team wanted to work on things.

 223.
For the first time, she is driving a canopy car, and it’s giving her quite a bit to adjust to, not just being quieter in the cockpit. She’s also working with an in-car radio system. Zetterstrom admitted she’d always previously raced with an open cockpit and no earplugs, which allowed her to hear everything.

 224.
“One difference with that that didn’t hit me before is I knew when I sat in the car and had the cockpit closed, I had a slimmer vision out of the car than I had with my open cockpit car when I raced in Europe,” Zetterstrom said. “I could see my whole front wing; I saw very wide. In this, it’s more slimmed down and you don’t have the same width when looking down the car.

 225.
“Then it’s small things like towing the car up to the track and you have the canopy open, and it’s like having two big pillars on the side where you can’t see – a big blind spot. It’s stuff like that you have to get used to. It’s not a problem in any way. It’s just things I’m not used to and have to get a feel for.”

 226.
The feel of the dragsters is different, too. Zetterstrom noted that a Top Fuel driver is constantly making small corrections during a run, and the NHRA dragster reacted “way different” to her inputs than what she’s felt in Europe. After the first shakedown pass in testing, Zetterström understood how she had to adjust her steering, and things felt better going forward.

 227.
Zetterstrom and JCM Racing also spent time going through racetrack routines – the speed of getting things done, hand signals, and backing up from a burnout – to understand he way each side likes to work and finding a common middle ground.

 228.

 229.
Although Zetterstrom has a car ready for her to compete, it will still be a few months before she makes her debut. The team is still being put together and there is plenty of inventory still needed before the program can run as it should. In the meantime, sheworks in the race shop every day and feels comfortable in a racing environment. It’s a different story going grocery shopping or learning that dryer sheets are vital to doing laundry.

 230.
A third test for Zetterstrom will take place in Indianapolis.

 231.
“I’m learning patience,” Zetterstrom laughed about her Top Fuel debut. “I’m maybe not the most patient person, but the good thing with this is I’m patient because I know why it takes time and every day, we’re doing something that is working toward the debut. I know when my debut will be, so I have a date that I can count down to. We’re sharing that date quite soon. But this is not an opportunity that came about because there was a team that had a car sitting and wanted a driver.

 232.
“This wasn’t a team looking for a second driver. This is a team that is creating this opportunity for me for the fact that they want me out full-time and want me to be with them in the long run. So that’s, of course, taking more time than if there was an operation that already had a car. So, in my mind, this is bigger because I know we’re creating it around me, and the fact that the team wants me on board. That’s an honor, and it feels great to be a part of this process. At least I’m not sitting sidelined and waiting for the date to arrive; I’m working closely with the team to get to where we want with everything, and I feel like I have my chance here to be very involved with this (team).

 233.
“I think all this waiting and being a part of this process is going to make this mean even more to me when we come out and race full-time.”

 260.

Roman De Angelis is making his third start with the new Aston Martin Vantage GT3 Evo this weekend in the IMSA SportsCar Grand Prix of Long Beach, partnered with Spencer Pumpelly in the No. 27. Aston Martin made some major updates to its GT3 racer, coinciding with the introduction of an updated road-going Vantage, that made its competition debut in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. With a fourth-place finish in GTD for the No. 27 at Sebring, the team is making progress in its understanding of the new car.

 261.
“We did have four years of experience with a past-generation car, so we kind of knew the window of where we wanted it to be, what worked and whatnot — lots of time to experiment with different things,” said De Angelis. “There’s still things that we need to learn as a team where the car operates in the right window and things like that. But I think every weekend, we’ll just keep progressing in that aspect. Hopefully in the next few weekends, we’ll have a car that can win races — hopefully we can do that this weekend.”

 276.
The previous-generation Vantage certainly had its successes, including a GTD victory for Heart of Racing in last year’s Rolex 24, double GTD-GTD PRO wins at Lime Rock Park (2023) and the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen (2022), and the 2022 GTD championship for De Angelis. But some drivers found the car to be a challenge. According to Aston Martin Racing’s head of performance, Gustavo Betelli, a primary goal for the Evo version was to solve that issue and broaden the performance window, and the car features revised aerodynamics and suspension.

 277.
“These new generation GT3 cars are more dependent than ever on aerodynamic downforce, so we wanted to make the car more stable under braking,” said Betelli at the car’s official introduction in February. “The old car would dive a lot under braking, so we had to try and control the pitch with the rear suspension setup. But this meant it was stiff, which made it quite snappy and also over-worked the tires. Working heavily on damper tuning, we have found a much better balance with the new car so we can generate the downforce without compromising the suspension setup. The result is much-improved progression and greater stability in all conditions. It also works its tires much more evenly, so teams have more options on strategy.”

Jake Galstad/Motorsport Images

 279.
De Angelis says that Aston Martin hit its mark: “I thought the previous generation car was really difficult to drive. That was kind of the consensus between most of the drivers — it was just a lot more difficult to get that lap out of it, because the difficulty of the car. The rear was quite unstable. So this car kind of went in that direction to try to fix that, make it a bit more easy to drive, and I think it’s definitely done that. The raceability around other cars is also something I feel is a strong suit now.”

 280.
Like when he won the championship in 2022, De Angelis doesn’t have a full-season co-driver. Because he was moved to a gold FIA driver rating, he couldn’t continue with Marco Sorensen, his co-driver in 2023. The team recruited Pumpelly from fellow Aston Martin team Magnus Racing, which is concentrating on the endurance races, for Long Beach.

 281.
“I think he was a great choice, from the Heart of Racing side, of who to have in the car for this weekend,” De Angelis says of Pumpelly. “Obviously somebody with tons of experience, has driven the new Aston and has driven this event quite a bit as well. So I think we have a strong lineup and I think it was it was the best choice.”

 282.
Heart of Racing is competing in three different races this weekend — two at Long Beach plus the World Endurance Championship 6 Hours of Imola in Italy. In addition to the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, Heart of Racing is represented at Long Beach by Gray Newell in the SRO America GT America races in a Vantage GT4. Newell and De Angelis scored a podium finish in Pirelli GT4 America Pro-Am competition at Sonoma Raceway two weeks ago, joined by a victory and a third-place finish for Hannah Grisham and Hannah Greenemeier in the Am class.

 331.

It didn’t take long for Sebastien Bourdais to get comfortable on the streets of Long Beach, putting the No. 01 Cadillac Racing V-Series.R at the top of the time charts after only nine laps in the first practice for the Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, where for much of the session he was the only driver in the 1m13s range. The team was comfortable enough that the car never emerged from the pits after a late-session red flag.

 332.
During those final minutes, however, two drivers set quicker times as the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams prepared for tomorrow’s 1h40m race on the 1.968-mile, 11-turn temporary circuit. Pipo Derani was the first, keeping Cadillac on top with a 1m13.477s lap (96.42mph) in the No. 31 Whelen Cadillac Racing V-Series.R. Connor De Phillippi went quicker than Bourdais as well, nearly exactly splitting the difference between Derani and Bourdais at 1m13.503s in the No. 25 BMW M Team RLL M Hybrid V8.

 347.
Bourdais ended up third-best, 0.028s off De Phillippi, but more than half a second ahead of Nick Tandy in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963 in fourth. Philipp Eng completed the top five in GTP in the No. 24 BMW.

 348.
Jack Aitken, running his first street course since he raced Formula 2 at Monaco in 2019, was running good times fairly quickly in the No. 31 Cadillac, his best a 1m14.253s. Despite the five-year gap in his street circuit experience, he expressed his excitement for the race, and his first sprint race alongside Derani.

 349.
“It’s one on the calendar that I picked out at the start of the year as quite a cool challenge,” he said. “Cadillac being strong there adds to that as well. Being a shorter format race, I’m interested to see if there’s much of a change of the view of traffic and how aggressive people are. With it being a shorter race, it’s about making sure you don’t make any mistakes because time to recover from those is at a premium. I enjoy street circuits, so really looking forward to it.”

 350.
There was 1.809s gap from the top of the GTP field to the championship-leading No. 40 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Acura ARX-06. Neither WTRAndretti car fared well in the first session, both spending times in runoffs and the No. 10 Acura moving slowly at the end of the session.

 351.
Matthew Bell put the No. 13 AWA Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R on top of the GTD runners, where the top 15 cars in the 17-car field were within a second. Bell’s 1m18.911s (89.78mph) was 0.144s better than Parker Thompson in the No. 89 Vasser Sullivan Lexus RC F GT3. Thompson this weekend is partnered with Ben Barnicoat as the team doubles its chances in GTD to good effect so far – Jack Hawksworth was fourth in the No. 12 Lexus.

 353.
Kyle Marcelli put the No. 45 Wayne Taylor Racing with Andretti Lamborghini Huracan GT3 Evo2 in third at 1m19.150s on his final circuit of the one-hour session. Frederik Schandorff rounded out the top five in GTD, although his co-driver Brendan Iribe later nosed the No. 70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S into the tire wall at Turn 1, bringing out the first of two red flags for the session.

 354.
The second stoppage came after Mikael Grenier made hard contact with the wall in Turn 9. That red flag lasted 11m, for a total downtime in the session of 14m – nearly a quarter of the available time.

 355.
Up Next: The 90m second practice at 3:50 p.m. ET, the final session before qualifying later this afternoon.

 380.

Following Yifei Ye’s hot lap in the privateer 499P top Free Practice 1 earlier today, Antonio Fuoco continued Ferrari’s fast start to the weekend on home soil with a 1m30.957s in the No. 50 factory car during FP2 for the FIA WEC at Imola.

 381.
With that lap, Fuoco became the first driver to dip into the 1m30s this weekend, and with qualifying on the horizon, the team will surely be confident that the 499Ps can challenge for pole at this stage.

 382.
Kevin Estre came closest, with a 1m31.299s in the No. 6 Porsche Penske Motorsport 963, splitting the two fastest Ferraris. The FP1-topping privately-entered AF Corse No. 83 ended up three-tenths off and third with a 1m31.331s.

 383.
It was a better session for Toyota, with its No. 8 GR010 HYBRID ending the day with a best time of 1m31.729s to go fourth, half a second up on the No. 12 Hertz Team JOTA Porsche 963 that rounded out the top five.

 384.
After producing a head-turning lap to go fourth fastest in FP1, the Lamborghini Iron Lynx SC63 could only manage the 15th-fastest time in the second 90-minute session, lapping fractionally quicker than the Cadillac.

 385.
There’s been a lot of head-scratching for the Ganassi crew thus far, the team struggling to find a setup that works despite having reportedly tested in similar conditions here last year. The No. 5 Porsche also failed to show outright pace, ending up 18th and two seconds off the benchmark time.

 400.
In LMGT3, TF Sport once again took the headlines with Charlie Eastwood setting a 1m41.986s in the No. 81 Corvette Z06 LMGT3.R. It would be the only time under 1m42s in the class for the day.

 401.
This time though it was not a 1-2 for the GM brand, as the No. 55 Vista AF Corse 488 LMGT3 ended up second, lapping faster than the No. 82 TF Sport Corvette which slotted in third. Heart of Racing was fourth, with the No. 54 AF Corse Ferrari fifth.

 402.
It was a troubled session for for United Autosports. Its No. 59 McLaren GT3 EVO finished the day at the bottom of the times after suffering an oil leak which limited the car to just eight laps in the session.

 403.
Track action continues for the WEC teams tomorrow with Free Practice 3 at 11:10am local time.

 425.

Hyundai’s Thierry Neuville and Toyota ace Elfyn Evans ended the Croatia Rally’s opening leg level on times after a frantic Friday on the all-asphalt event.

 426.
There was nothing to separate the duo after eight rough and slippery asphalt stages totaling 74.4 competitive miles in the hills west of Croatia’s capital, Zagreb. However, Neuville (above), who entered round 4 of the FIA World Rally Championship season with the title lead and a six-point margin over Evans, was left to rue missed opportunities.

 427.
Neuville won four of the day’s first five special stages, building a useful 10.1s advantage. However, the Belgian’s efforts were thwarted when his Hyundai i20 N Rally1 struck a rock in the sixth stage and sustained front-right tire damage that cost him around 10s.

 428.
Toyota GR Yaris Rally1 driver Evans seized the lead by winning the following 5.9-mile blast from Jaskovo to Mali Modrus Potok. Still, a late resurgence from Neuville in the day’s final stage saw both drivers finish the day on exactly the same total time — 1h5m15.3s — with Evan’s Toyota teammate Sebastien Ogier completing the top three positions just 6.6s behind.

 429.

Toyota’s Sebastien Ogier completed the podium spots after day one, 6.6s behind the ultra-close lead fight. Jaanus Ree/Red Bull Content Pool

 430.
“We are really disappointed [about the damaged tire] because it’s something that couldn’t have been avoided,” Neuville admitted. “I did what I could, but it was not a great day for us.”

 431.
Muddy conditions, and even flurries of snow, led to changeable grip levels. Eight-time WRC champ Ogier, who is running only a limited WRC program in 2024 and started sixth on the road based on his points position, was one of the worst effected by dirt being dragged onto the road by cars in front cutting corners for the fastest line.

 432.
Despite suffering a slow puncture in the opening stage and being caught in a localized rain shower in the first stage after the midday regroup, the Frenchman’s strong performance in the final stage propelled him back into contention.

 433.
Anticipating wet weather on Saturday, Ogier noted: “Tomorrow is the start of another rally, I think — much slower and much slippier.”

 434.
Ott Tanak ended 41.1s adrift of the lead in fourth overall. After noting that his Hyundai felt “nervous” in the morning, the Estonian enjoyed a more consistent afternoon and edged out Adrien Fourmaux’s M-Sport Ford Puma Rally1 by 11.6s at day’s end.

 435.

M-Sport Ford’s Adrien Fourmaux is aiming for a third-straight WRC podium, but lies fifth after Friday’s stages.

 436.
Completing the overall victory-contending hybrid Rally1 runners, Toyota’s Takamoto Katsuta claimed sixth place ahead of Hyundai’s Andreas Mikkelsen, who lost time in the morning after overshooting a junction, with M-Sport Ford’s Gregoire Munster heading back to Zagreb a steady eighth.

 437.
In WRC2, the second tier of international rallying, it was an all-Citroen duel for class honors between Nikolay Gryazin and Yohan Rossel. The pair of C3 pilots were in a class of their own over the opening day, opening a commanding lead of more than two minutes over the remainder of the WRC2 field.

 438.
Gryazin, making just his second WRC start in a Citroen C3, set the tone early by going 10.8s faster than DG Sport Competition teammate Rossel on the opening stage, leaving his rivals playing catchup over the next seven stages.

 439.
He would complete Friday with seven stage wins, while Rossel, also on his second start of the season, claimed one stage win and is well-placed to match his Monte Carlo Rally podium finish, 31.1s behind Gryazin.

 440.
Monte Carlo Rally WRC2 runner-up Pepe Lopez is making his Croatian debut this weekend, and despite his limited knowledge of the broken asphalt stages, the Spaniard positioned his Skoda Fabia RS comfortably in the third spot on the class podium.
