  884. <p>We arrived back at the ZTA around 21:00 of the 19<sup>th</sup> of April. For the last 3 hours of the day, there were just two small boats seen in the Vaquita Refuge west of the ZTA.</p>
  885. <p>Activity started shortly before 7:00, when small boats started crossing the area heading to the northeast. Diver boats also started to gather in the center of the ZTA; the maximum number for the day was 7.</p>
  886. <p>At 9:00 there were several small boats seen in the west area in the Extension and the Vaquita Refuge, a couple of them with flags (buoy markers) in the water. At 13:00 we were at the south corner and spotted a dispersed group of small boats in the area outside of the ZTA. In the early afternoon a Navy vessel Interceptor was seen patrolling the area.</p>
  887. <p>During the evening some small boats grouped in the west area outside of the ZTA. At 21:30 the Interceptor checked on the small boats outside of the Vaquita Refuge close to the beach and went back to port around midnight.</p>

  1087. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">April 17, 2024, MEXICO CITY, MEXICO; Yesterday, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Mexican government officials Secretary Albores of SEMARNAT, Commissioner Peña’ of CONANP and Captain Miraflores of the Mexican Navy announced that the 2024 Vaquita Survey will begin May 5th and conclude on May 26th. <strong>The independent scientific survey will estimate the population of the <a href="https://seashepherd.org/vaquita/">Vaquita Porpoise</a> in the UNESCO-recognized Vaquita Refuge.</strong></span></p>
  1088. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The 2024 Vaquita Survey will examine the endemic species that exists only in a small region of Mexico’s Upper Gulf of California. A partnership between Sea Shepherd and the Natural Protected Areas Commission of Mexico (CONANP), the survey will be conducted by more than a dozen highly trained and experienced observers and led by Dr. Barbara Taylor, who has more than 30 years of experience in protecting the Vaquita. The survey will locate and track <a href="https://seashepherd.org/vaquita/">Vaquitas</a> from two ships with logistical support provided by the Mexican Navy.</span></p>
  1089. <p><strong><i>“The 2024 survey that we are announcing today will be the most updated scientific analysis of the Vaquita population since last year,” </i>said Sea Shepherd CEO Pritam Singh.<i> “The results of this survey will help guide the next steps in our growing collaboration with the Mexican Government to protect the Vaquita.”</i></strong></p>
  1090. <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Since 2015, Sea Shepherd has worked with Mexican authorities to protect the <a href="https://seashepherd.org/vaquita/">Vaquita</a> by preventing the placement of, and removing, illegal fishing gear inside the Vaquita Refuge. The banned gillnets ensnare the Vaquita, bringing this species to the edge of extinction. The 2024 survey will be incredibly valuable to that partnership, officially called Operation Milagro, in which Sea Shepherd collaborates with the Mexican Government’s Intergovernmental Group (GIS). </span></p>

  1822. <p>No activity was seen during the night. The swell increased during the early morning hours, and by we were in front of San Felipe to drop off a crew member. After 9:00 small boats started to leave San Felipe and gathered in the northwest area of the Vaquita Refuge, with a maximum of 22 observed. At 12:00 we spotted a couple of targets in the center area of the ZTA, and after we approached, we saw they were diver boats.</p>

  3253. <p>There was some small boat activity during the night in the north area outside the ZTA. Before 8:00, many small boats started leaving from San Felipe heading to the west and north area of the Vaquita Refuge outside the ZTA. There was high activity in the Vaquita Refuge during the day, mostly in the north area; the maximum number counted was 140 small boats at 16:00.</p>
