<description><![CDATA[<h3>Using Fluvial Geomorphology to Improve Stream Restoration and Watershed Management</h3><h4>Course Description</h4>This three-day short course will explore the principles of fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration in a virtual format. An optional virtual field trip of stream restoration sites in the Chesapeake Bay region and possibly other locations is also available and will include live interaction with the field trip leader. The course is designed for government officials, environmental and engineering consultants, non-profit watershed groups, , construction contractors, educators and students, and others trying to sustainably address flooding, erosion, habitat, and sediment and nutrient loading issues along rivers and streams. While some quantitative methods will be introduced, the course will focus on the underlying concepts of fluvial geomorphology that are needed to effectively apply and interpret the results of quantitative analyses used in stream restoration designs. Fluvial geomorphology is also critical for anticipating how streams respond, both positively and negatively, to human activities along rivers and streams, including stream restoration projects. The short course will highlight process-based restoration practices, which are typically more effective, sustainable, and cost effective than form-based practices. Whether designing stream restoration projects yourself or reviewing plans to determine their potential effectiveness, this short course will provide you with the background and practical experience to identify the best restoration approaches for a particular setting and set of project objectives. The short course will consist of visual presentations, small group exercises, and hands-on activities that will provide participants with practical experiences and examples to recognize unstable channel reaches in a watershed and identify the most appropriate stream restoration techniques that will best address the identified instabilities, if present. The first day of the short course will focus on the basic concepts of fluvial geomorphology including extended discussions on stream equilibrium and channel classification. The second day will consist of hands-on activities in small breakout groups to reinforce the geomorphic concepts learned during day 1 and will provide practical experiences using resources (e.g., topo maps, aerial photographs) critical for completing geomorphic assessments at the watershed scale. The final day will apply the knowledge gained to examine numerous stream restoration practices through a series of case studies (working in small groups) that will highlight the many issues that must be considered to successfully and sustainably restore rivers and streams and to anticipate potential problems even before a restoration design is complete. First stage of development for 2x500 MW was undertaken and commissioned in 1994. Due to the political problems and environmental problems further development was stopped. BSES decided to make the project in to best eco-friendly project and decided
to develop the balance degraded land in to an excellent ecosystem. Various stages of land development and afforestation case study will be presented.

Event Description: Climate change affects municipalities in multiple ways: having to open cooling centres during heat waves, heating centres during power outages; flood damage due to heavy rainfall events that overpower stormwater management systems,
coastal storm surge events damaging municipal infrastructure; trees being downed during post tropical storms, and an increasing need to have disaster response mechanisms and plans updated and in place.
For all municipalities in Atlantic Canada, large or small, using nature-based approaches can only have benefits – and not just for managing impacts from climate change, but also, at the same time, actually reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and benefiting
nature and thus biodiversity. Yet there are numerous barriers for municipalities to even consider thinking “outside the box”, associated with priorities, financial and human resources, and most clearly, a lack of understanding of what services
and functions nature (ecological systems) can provide to reduce the impacts from climate change, and support emissions reduction.
This presentation will discuss opportunities for communities to use nature-based approaches (and ecological resoration) to achieve multiple benefits, how barriers can be addressed, and some of the practical ways this can be achieved. redevelopment projects. Emphasis is given to “small footprint,” retrofit green infrastructure techniques, which are especially suited for urban environments and managing the runoff responsible for localized nuisance flooding and combined sewer system
overflows. Case studies, many of which are American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) award winning projects, are used to exemplify the actual, real-world implementation of green infrastructure techniques. Course presenters include regionally

A weekend intensive designed to provide natural resource professionals, master naturalists, and herbalists with a solid basis in botanical science. Through the course, you will learn terms for key plant structures, characteristics of common plant families, and how to use dichotomous keys. We will spend the mornings in a lecture-lab setting, then head out on field trips to forests and wetlands in the Grand Marais area to observe and study plant structures in a natural setting. This course is geared towards students interested in learning technical botanical terms, plant taxonomy, and using botanical keys. A knowledge of local flora, experience identifying plants with image-based field guides, or similar experience will be an asset as the course is intensive. Students should have the ability to sit in a classroom setting for 2-4 hours (with breaks) and walk several hundred feet or more into a forest, bog, or other settings off-trail and over uneven terrain. The symposium will be held for the third time, following the success of the 2018 and 2021 editions. The symposium will be organized by the University of Helsinki, Lake Vesijärvi Foundation, and the SIL working group on Lake Restoration. For the 2024 edition, we will again team up with Videomakers to create an interactive hybrid symposium, but participants are invited to join us at the Sibelius Hall in Lahti in person if possible. More details on participation options will be given in the run-up to the event. Lahti Lakes has served as an important forum for discussions on lake restoration since its inception. <description><![CDATA[Description: This course is intended for those in research or practice who wish to understand and apply the principles of sediment transport to alluvial channel analysis, assessment, and design. Principles of open channel flow and sediment
transport are combined with sediment source analysis to place channel assessment and design in the necessary context. Tools for estimating sediment supply and transport rates are applied in class exercises. Threshold and alluvial channel design methods
are presented along with guidelines for assessing and incorporating uncertainty. We present an approach defined by specified channel behavior and not contingent on a predetermined bankfull channel. The course balances advance reading, lecture, field
work, and hands-on exercises for estimating sediment supply, calculating sediment transport rates, and forecasting channel response to changes in water and sediment supply. This course is intended for students and practitioners who are familiar with
basic principles of river geomorphology.

<description><![CDATA[<h3>Using Fluvial Geomorphology to Improve Stream Restoration and Watershed Management</h3><h4>Course Description</h4>This three-day short course will explore the principles of fluvial geomorphology and stream restoration in a virtual format. An optional virtual field trip of stream restoration sites in the Chesapeake Bay region and possibly other locations is also available and will include live interaction with the field trip leader. The course is designed for government officials, environmental and engineering consultants, non-profit watershed groups, , construction contractors, educators and students, and others trying to sustainably address flooding, erosion, habitat, and sediment and nutrient loading issues along rivers and streams. While some quantitative methods will be introduced, the course will focus on the underlying concepts of fluvial geomorphology that are needed to effectively apply and interpret the results of quantitative analyses used in stream restoration designs. Fluvial geomorphology is also critical for anticipating how streams respond, both positively and negatively, to human activities along rivers and streams, including stream restoration projects. The short course will highlight process-based restoration practices, which are typically more effective, sustainable, and cost effective than form-based practices. Whether designing stream restoration projects yourself or reviewing plans to determine their potential effectiveness, this short course will provide you with the background and practical experience to identify the best restoration approaches for a particular setting and set of project objectives. The short course will consist of visual presentations, small group exercises, and hands-on activities that will provide participants with practical experiences and examples to recognize unstable channel reaches in a watershed and identify the most appropriate stream restoration techniques that will best address the identified instabilities, if present. The first day of the short course will focus on the basic concepts of fluvial geomorphology including extended discussions on stream equilibrium and channel classification. The second day will consist of hands-on activities in small breakout groups to reinforce the geomorphic concepts learned during day 1 and will provide practical experiences using resources (e.g., topo maps, aerial photographs) critical for completing geomorphic assessments at the watershed scale. The final day will apply the knowledge gained to examine numerous stream restoration practices through a series of case studies (working in small groups) that will highlight the many issues that must be considered to successfully and sustainably restore rivers and streams and to anticipate potential problems even before a restoration design is complete.
